Ray Turner, "Woman no. 18," 2008-2015, Oil on Glass, 12 x 12 Inches. This woman was one of the 85 participants I painted for the Long Beach Museum of Art. It was a full throttle preparation, having painted that many in ten weeks, several other GMBM pieces, a catalogue, and 350 street banners all over Long Beach. The only regret I have from that exhibit is I left out the thank you I had written for the director of the museum, from the catalogue. It was a major mistake, and one I still sort of cringe from, as he could not have been more supportive and generous. I needed an assistant and got one not long after that, which was a wonderful move. Anyway sorry again Ron Nelson! sending love and gratitude. That was nearly ten years ago. A new addition to my Back Story series - “Maelstrom”, oil on canvas, 34x40 inches Some famous, some anonymous people in this one, but it’s their shapes and how they fit together that matters to me, not who they are. However, people always seem to want to know, so will list in the #’s below. Capturing how things seem to feel to a lot of folks, including me, right now. The paintings in the Back Story series fuse together a pastiche of imagery all taken from contemporary culture and placed in a non-literal setting. The images are drawn from a spectrum of sources with some contemporary unknowns and cultural icons spliced into the work. Figurative detail is kept to a minimum to emphasize the shape of the forms as abstract elements in the composition. The anonymity and abstractions allow interpretations to be open.
