Dragon Ball AF Lore
Last night I reblogged a thing about Xicor, the imaginary villain of Dragon Ball AF, the imaginary sequel to Dragon Ball GT. There were some cool responses to this, but I didn't want to reblog the entire post all over again, so I thought I'd carry the discussion over here.
@brotoman-exe : #so do they ever explain why Goku cheats on his wife in this set up?#(to be clear Im guessing it was likely a stolen dna Superman 4 thing just having fun)
My understanding was that the West Supreme Kai faked her death and then came back as a bad guy. She somehow obtained a DNA sample from Goku and used it to impregnate herself? The end result being that Xicor is the biological son of Goku and the West Supreme Kai, even though Goku himself had no idea of any of this.
Of course, it's impossible to cite sources on any of this, since I'm talking about made-up details from a made-up show. It's entirely possible that there are other versions of the AF legend where Goku cheated on his wife like a jerk.
Tumblr media
What I always wanted to know was how the West Supreme Kai survived the fight with Kid Buu five million years ago, and why she laid low for so long.
Tumblr media
But now that you've brought up Superman IV, I can't stop thinking about the raw chicken thigh Lex stuffed in that little lockbox. This is my new DBAF personal canon.
@scarabats123: #As someone who wasn't alive in 1994#let me tell you Xicor and AF was THRIVING in the 2000s up into the early 2010s#hell even now some people make nostalgic fanart of it#Everyone knew about Xicor and Evil Goku and that blue bald dude
It really is bizarre how long the AF mythos has persisted. I think Dragon Ball Super was the final nail in the coffin for any true believers that were still left, but by the time DBS came out AF had already established itself as this weird little thing in its own right. It's like Bigfoot. I think everyone knows it's not real and doesn't make a lot of sense, but the idea is too much fun to discard completely.
@mozillavulpix: definitely think there's a lot of information here that's wrong, but I wasn't in the fandom in the 1990s to confirm any of it But the one big thing is...I'm pretty sure 'Dragon Ball AF' was originally supposed to stand for 'April Fools'. Like at one point someone somewhere started the name just because it'd be hilarious to trick people into believing something with a name so obviously-fake if you were paying attention. But when people started believing it they came up with their own theories on what it meant. kanzenshuu also says the rumours probably only started around 2002-2003 https://www.kanzenshuu.com/rumor/dragon-ball-af/
There were some factual errors, but the one that stood out to me was the notion of Toyotaro creating Towa and Mira, since I'd always heard Toriyama created her for Dragon Ball Online. And I've heard of the Goku Black/Xicor parallels before, but I'm pretty sure that's more of a coincidence than anything else.
I also found the 1990s to be a little too early for AF rumors to really get started, so I went back to that Kanzenshuu article you linked to and read it again just to check. This time, I ran across the link to the message board discussion about the "SSJ5 Goku" image that seems to have started it all.
Apparently, this was all discovered back in 2012, but I don't think I ever heard about this until now. Someone found the "AF Goku" image in an issue of the magazine Hobby Consolas, cover dated May 1999.
Tumblr media
It looks like the magazine just published reader-submitted fan art, and this particular one was credited to David Montiel Franco of Alicante, Spain. Forums member Raykugan published this information in February 2012, and then Derek Padula contacted the artist and published his findings on his blog "Dao of Dragon Ball".
David Montiel Franco, as it turns out, has his own blog, af-dragonball.blogspot.com, where he appears to be promoting his Dragon Ball AF fancomics. And apparently, the guy in the image is not Super Saiyan 5 Goku at all, but an OC named Tablos.
So it appears that the true original DBAF was a fanwork created by Franco prior to May 1999. Everyone else was building onto his creation whether they knew it or not. The alternative is that Franco is stealing the credit from the true artist, but that seems like a weird thing to still be holding onto after all these years. I mean, if he wanted clout, you'd think he'd do more self-promotion than this. By now, everyone would have heard of his claims to be the creator of AF. So I think he might be the real deal.
Anyway, it definitely ties DBAF to the year 1999, although I have a feeling the rumors didn't really pick up steam until 2002 or so, as U.S. fans became aware of a sequel series to Z and wondered what might follow after that. There may have been rumors in other countries that got earlier access to GT, and there were surely American fans in the 90's who knew more about GT before it was localized. But at least the concept of AF was around in the 90's, even if it was the tail end of the 90's, and even if it was very obscure.
But that's AF in general, not Xicor. I get the sense that Vintagegeekculture seemed to conflate Tablos with Xicor, and that's probably an understandable mistake to make, since Xicor was probably invented as a response to what was thought to be SSJ5 Goku. So Xicor must have come later, but how much later?
I guess what bugs me is that there ought to be someone who would claim credit for the character, the way Franco claimed to be the artist of the DBAF image. It's kind of fascinating how Xicor is out there and no one's trying to act like it was their idea.

I literally do not have anything smart to say here, this drawing literally only happened because my siblings were telling me I should post my brainrot doodles on here, and my anxiety-ridden ass couldn't do it, and decided the only solution was to spend days (read: the entire latter end of April) working on a proper drawing because "if I'm going to post anything on tumblr, it better be a full-ass drawing"

In the true story, BAFTA winner Scott, also coming off rave reviews for All Of Us Strangers, is set to play Group Captain James Stagg, the Allies’ Chief Meteorologist whose job it was to inform Supreme Commander General Eisenhower of weather conditions that would make-or-break their Normandy invasion. The decision-making was critical in the fate of the war and the course of history.
Anthony Maras (Hotel Mumbai) will direct the ticking-clock thriller, which is due to start shooting in the UK this September. Additional casting is underway, with Studiocanal handling world sales.
Olivier award-winner David Haig and Maras wrote the screenplay based on Haig’s critically lauded play, which ran in London’s West End before going on to be performed for the late Queen Elizabeth II and world leaders to mark the D-Day 75th anniversary in 2019. The official synopsis reads: “In the seventy two hours leading up to D-Day, all the pieces are in place except for one key element—the British weather. Britain’s chief meteorological officer James Stagg (Andrew Scott) is called upon to deliver the most consequential forecast in history, locking him into a tense standoff with the entire Allied leadership. The wrong conditions could devastate the largest ever seaborne invasion, while any delay risks German intelligence catching on. With only his trusted aide Captain Kay Summersby to confide in, and haunted by a catastrophic D-Day rehearsal, the final decision rests with Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower. With only hours to go, the fate of the war and the lives of millions hang in the balance.” Haig’s play explores the personal and military stresses on Stagg and how tensions grew between the teams with different weather forecasts for the date of the proposed D-Day. The film will concentrate on the pressure-cooker of the decision-making but also capture the scale of the landings. Studiocanal previously had commercial and critical success with WWII story The Imitation Game while Working Title similarly scored box office and Oscar recognition with WWII film Darkest Hour.

Dragon ball girls - Bulma, 18, fasha(Saiyan.warrior), West supreme kai, chronoa (Supreme kai of time), towa, and videl
No on 18, Bulma and Videl, cause as much as I love Jaune, I love Krillin and Vegeta more... And while I sorta break even on Gohan, facts are facts. That boy would blow up Remnant.
West Supreme Kai, Fasha, Chronoa and maybe Vados and the other Angel girls I can see possibly one day.

notes abt kais & supreme kais 2 self
readmore cuz m' tagging for organization (srry tags)
KAIOSHINS + KAIS
Every universe has Kais of 4 directions (North, East, South, West) - Kais are born from normal apples & not a golden one. These apples can be susceptible to certain dangers & possible disruption likely causing more unstable Kai (ref. Zamasu) -They're looked over & taught by the Grand Kai, whom one can be appointed as the successor of. - Kais can become apprentices to Supreme Kai to be their successor; there is now a background check process to see ones mental health. - North, east, south, west are simply the directions of the universe these kai will observe. Observing & Supervising the living worlds of their quadrant. - The Kais are alone at their posts. Some more isolated than others. (Doubt loneliness is suited for everyone) They might have visits with each other & head back to the Sacred World when able.
Every universe has a Supreme Kai, God of Destruction, & Angel attendant to said god. -Supreme Kai are born from golden apples & fruit, do not relax, these apples too can be susceptible to the same issues as Kai's. Their added bonus is their golden peels + interiors, protecting them and keeping many pure even with bruised apples. -Similar to their Kai counterparts they can oversee any living world where they differ is their observation & supervision of the "Other World" -They work alongside their God of Destruction, likely informing them of what planets are due for destruction; possibly advising them as well. --POWERS-- -Possess the power of creation to a galactic level, manifesting objects from nothing & the ability to heal living beings -Some have advance knowledge in various areas, fighting, martial arts, technology, etc. -Can teleport via the phrase "Kai Kai" -Can read minds via telepathy & speak to said minds -Telekinesis recorded -Time travel (These guys just keep adding onto their prowess wow) -Fusion (Which I'm still trying to understand fully, various ways to do it) -Godly Ki (The kind people here tell me its just a more divine energy that can be masked) - & Likely more things outside my knowledge as of right now.
There use to be a process in which like their Kai counterparts, 4 directions of Supreme Kai would be together & mentored under one Supreme Kai. After the "Majin Tragedy" a new order was put in place: - One active supreme kai, they may have an attendant. (Though in my opinion it's technically two with the point below) - Elderly Supreme Kai may remain in their post even after their student is given their position, they become a mentor & elder to be respected. Both the active Supreme Kai & attendant will aid this kai and help care for them in their older age.
SACRED WORLD & ACADEMY RESIDING IN "NULL REALM" OR MULTIVERSE - Kais & Kaioshins reside on a planet known as the "Sacred World", on this planet they're not referred to with such titles as they're considered "core people" as they're born from fruit cores. (It's like a cute pun) - The people born to be Kais & Kaioshins are taken to "Kai Temple" (Titled as such due to the buildings structure, I've heard others just call it the temple) -It is at the "Kai Temple" they are overseen and mentored by the Kais suited for their divinity. IE. Kais = Grand Kai Supreme Kai = Grand Supreme Kai (Creative I know.) - Live what's been described as leisurely lives as "Sacred World" is very peaceful & pristine usually. -What well call the "Academy" is described as a grandiose castle structure. They study various things, likely pertaining to interests and their professions as Kais. (At least I hypothesize, to put things in an allegory they're the rich kids who attend private schools with ensured jobs in big corp.)
A WARNING TO KEEP IN MIND Kais & their Supreme counterparts tend to only intervene when the balance of the universe & planets are at risk. It's a common belief if Supreme Kai is spotted in a mortal space that a bad omen is ahead. Keep eyes out for possible Destruction God's & Angel sightings if you see a Supreme Kai.
Kais themself cannot physically come, but many report hearing their voices, guidance, & advice during these times which at times helped, at times did nothing, & at most misfortunate made it worse. !They say you should report to someone if you hear the voice of a kai! FINAL THOUGHTS, IDEAS, & NOTES.
The divine beings of this reality are very much a curious case & unlike other I've come across albeit our old dead reality wasn't under full divine control like this one. They keep a very rigorous strict system in place valuing tradition... But it does seem with newer generations more progressive & open minded policies have been adapted which is always a win. Luckily they can still live casually outside of the responsibility of oversite and creation as they only intervene when absolutely needed, or working alongside their God of Destruction. I'm glad to learn more about this world and the beings who reside on it especially as we were graciously given a place of refuge and sanctuary, I just have to stop being so timid and venture out the temple and maybe check out the school. (But I'm really really shy and awkward at meeting people let alone divine religious figures.) SIGNOUT Dove, Age 782 of Galactic Date, 4/1/?? on Earth.

Do Bulma and Vegeta know about Baiya's crush on the kaioshin of their universe? And how "stupid"(or no) would this girl act around Shin during her crush phase before it passed? Your girl watches Goku grab the god of the universe like a little chihuahua dog, has she ever done the same?
Omggggg this is the funniest thing ever
Gosh… If I think abt it, honestly, I imagined that Baiya would’ve mostly been around Shin in the Sacred Lands during her training/studies under him and Kibito (let’s roll with it for now since I still need to bang out the how and why lol) so Vegeta & Bulma probably wouldn’t really be aware of what their interactions/Baiya’s attitude towards Shin would be like.
I think, at first, Baiya would be at least a bit nervous when she meets Shin and Kibito (bc holy shit, the Kai, and the SUPREME Kai, at that!) She’d likely default to her usual (attempted) diplomatic persona that Vegeta’s tried to train her for, as a Princess.
As Baiya eventually spends more time around Shin, I think he’d mention something along the lines of, “You don’t have to hold yourself back to appeal to me, as either a student… Or a friend. I can hear your thoughts, anyways, so there’s little use in denying them.” Baiya slowly gets more comfortable around him, seeking his counsel for even minor things, involving him more in her personal life (and… Learning to think a little quieter, lol.)
Of course… This eventually leads to Baiya getting her lil crush on Shin.
He’s got poise and tact, eloquent, traditional… Honestly, Shin could very much pass for a Prince himself! Along with his gentler approach to encouraging Baiya to reach her full potential, and to embrace her flaws and work with them instead of around them, she’d absolutely develop a strong attachment to him.
They’d have teatime in the Grand Temple Gardens. They’d stroll the grounds side by side, with Shin proudly showing her off to the other Kai as yet another of his various mentees, their arms linked together. Shin would teach her Kai history and language, their traditions, invite her to join him in various ceremonies or rituals… Inviting her into his world, literally and figuratively. That’d be pretty important to Baiya, who’s felt like a bit of an outsider since her creation, despite her loving family and friends.
Baiya would teleport to the Sacred Lands, happily running to join Shin in his study for their next week of training and studying together, joking and gossiping together, with Baiya informing Shin in return about life on Earth as a mortal…
And, maybe this would lead to Shin occasionally visiting Earth more often than most other Kai ever had before.
The first time Shin pays a visit to the Capsule Corporation household, I believe Bulma would treat him like most any other guest, or how she’d behave around Whis. Vegeta may not pay him as much attention at first, but he’d be respectful as he would be towards any of the gods. Then… Shin and Baiya greet each other with a hug, and she grabs his hand as they run upstairs together, and they dash out the door moments later with Shin dressed as “incognito” as he possibly can be for a day out and about in West City.
Bulma and Vegeta look to each other, slack-jawed. Bulma would probably laugh it off as “puppy-love”, something sweet and innocent but destined not to last. Meanwhile Vegeta’s white as a sheet and can hardly believe his eyes. “She’s flirting with a god. My sweet pea dressed up a God of Creation like a legally-distinct Ken doll, to go out for whatever the hell “boba” is. How.” I have a feeling Vegeta would feel a mix of pride and mild fear.
Baiya would go so stupid for Shin at first asdfghjkl
AND she’d jokingly hoist him up and carry him around sometimes (…if Shin lets her. I kinda imagine that Kai can simply choose to be Immovable Objects™️ when it comes to mortals weaker than them, so… Technically, that’d mean that Shin would play along with it to an extent)
I imagine Baiya to be a “harmless prankster” type; bubbly and sweet with a dash of mischief. A playful older sister that’s still figuring out how the world works and how she fits into it, essentially. She’d enjoy teasing Shin, talking him into silly ideas, maybe even flopping onto her bed after a visit, hugging her plushies and kicking her feet excitedly, etc. So basically, Typical Girly Stuff™️.
Eventually, I imagine that Shin would recognize that Baiya’s caught feelings for him, and as much as he might even be flattered at her affection, he probably would let her down as gently as possible, or encourage her to pursue other potential suitors. Mortal suitors. Suitors that she might get to grow old with, even as a Saiyan, and have a “proper life” with… As much as it could pain Shin to admit. Baiya knows it, too, though.
Baiya & Shin would still absolutely be on excellent terms afterwards, and she’d continue to seek his advice and company. Tbh, this is the one friendship I think she’d build that rarely ever would have actual rough patches or strains between them… :)
Thanks for asking & thanks for listening/reading my ramble!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Made my day to gush abt them asdfghjkl

i am finally in 1/3 of a mood to finally get some of this down. kinda. hhhh
anyway my precious, beloved turtle daughter Mei Pieh Chi/Venus de Milo is a cultivator (sort of) and I am absolutely going to be fast, loose, and entirely lazy 'justifying' it because it's now 97 fuckenheit degrees outside.
first, point of contention, during the East Meets West five parter that served to introduce Venus she declares herself 'shinobi'. which, was so supremely silly and massively dependent on the audience of the time (late 90s U.S.A) being monolingual. mostly.
youtube
... that's more of a hindsight nitpick tbh. I mean Venus used 'shaman' interchangeably to refer to what she and Chung I were on the show so why wouldn't-- ahem. anyway.
(i know why but I'm not about to get into asian-american history and asian depiction in hollywood 101, it also just became 100 fuckenheit degrees.)
functionally in the show, the distinction between the boys being 'ninja' and venus being 'shinobi' started and stopped with venus' spirituality and attunement with the supernatural. she fought with punches and kicks like the boys, used her cape to fight and her kai mai balls like the boys used their signature weapons. (the shit with the fan was because her toy came with fans, she never actually fought with them in the show).
now onto the reasons why, for purposes of understanding original Venus' magic/mysticism and having a frame of reference, I would categorize her as a 'cultivator' rather than 'shinobi'/shaman.
youtube
though to clarify I wouldn't necessarily ascribe actual daoist cultivation with what Venus does. i mean sure she wears the taijitu on her arm. and her little leg garter but uhhhhhhh. considering what she actually does in the show plus the show's tone? i'd more easily say she's like a modern day xianxia cultivator.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
look at her, i love her so much. and now
the list of shit Venus canonically did and said on the show about her 'magic'.
She was taught neigong techniques and,
She's part of a sect, to watch and guard against the return of evil dragons (she failed but)
She can uh... idk what this is, calling up an old version of yourself to call your current self cringe until you quit being The Shredder?
She can do the Jedi Mind Trick
She has a 'revealing' powder
She can astral project/plane walk
She's capable of time/space displacement
She develops her own techniques
She's got her collection of medicinal herbs
She's a linguist.
She has... uh. "Mandarin itch powder" (file under: Shit Before 2001)
She's skilled in telepathy!
Also uh "long distance telepathy" and i guess candy telelocation?
She employs kai mai balls (that are also used as glue traps, long range blunt force impact etc.)
She's trained in cape fighting
She's the team medic
She studies up because in-show she's a masterless student
She can decode mystical cyphers
She can pick locks with magic and with tools
She can cast Fireball, a very low level Fireball
Also telekinesis
and in 5e she'd be a Wizard

Images of fantasy and fairy tales by a Danish master of illustration
The Danish artist Kay Nielsen’s luminous interpretations of fairy tales and legends from around the world are among the most celebrated book illustrations of the 20th century, unsurpassed in their dramatic intensity and intricate detail. This book is the first to put his achievements in the context of a career that took him from studies in Paris to the Copenhagen theater, to galleries in London and New York, to the Walt Disney Studios, presenting fresh insights into his life and work as well as his materials and techniques. Dazzling reproductions of original watercolors and drawings from one of the premier collections of Nielsen’s work invite viewers to enter the enchanted world of an imaginative and supremely gifted artist. Born in Copenhagen and educated in Paris, Kay Nielsen (1886–1957) gained international recognition for his exquisite gift book illustrations, notably his masterpieces East of the Sun and West of the Moon (1914) and Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen (1924). In contrast to some of his contemporaries, Nielsen often focused on the melancholic or dramatic elements of tales, creating memorable visual sequences reflecting themes of love, passion, loss and death. During the last stage of his career, he collaborated with Walt Disney Studios on the landmark animation film Fantasia, and produced several public art commissions.

So here's some more of that Dragon Ball "Universe 14" stuff:
So basically, the kaio/kaioshin situation is switched up only slightly, in the fact that the Kaio and Kaioshin ranks have both been merged making all four of them as much more hands on attendants to their respective quadrant being both physical and spiritual representatives, leaving only the Grand and Grand-Supreme Kai(s)
Here is
Tsuntaru, the South Kai (left) (he/him)
-name derives from "Tarhunz" the Luwain rain god
-a seeming Glind
Suaideguite, the North Kai (right) (they/them)
-name derives from "Agdists" an Anatolian (???) god
-a... Whatever King Kai (universe 7's North Kaio) is
Tumblr media
Suuriasute, the East Kai (top) (he/him)
-name derives from Aristaeus, a greek food cultivating god (bee keeping, wine making, cheese making, olive growing etc.)
-an ogre like Yemma but little
Terudeme, the West Kai (bottom) (she/her)
-name derives from Demeter, greek nature godess
-concerning for what that implies about Tsuntaru, very much more obviously a Glind
