I know they enjoy jawsh, as shown with the surprised mention of jawsh in the connereatspants episode, and though chuckle week likely ended they could have brought him on since I’m pretty sure it’s based in California, where jawsh is or so my reliable source has informed me, I know he’s has lazy as his viewers but still

You pull your headphones off your head and finally take a look at the room around you. Your whole body feels stiff. You don't really care. You don't remember the last time you ate. You don't really care.

Pale grey clouds greet your eyes when you look out the window. It was pitch black last time you looked. Countless trails of water run down the glass, the drizzle outside filling the room with white noise. It's been a long time since you've found comfort in it.

You attempt to rise from your chair and immediately stumble, falling against the wall. Huh. It must've been longer than you thought since your last meal. Your head is spinning.

You look up and find yourself face to face with a reflection in the window, distorted by the raindrops racing down the other side. You don't recognize it. It's not because of the rain. You don't remember the last time you recognized yourself. You don't remember a time you when did.

You don't remember why you're even alive.

You don't know if you're even alive.

You don't remember the last time you felt like it.

...

You push yourself off the wall and slowly make your way to the kitchen. Time to eat.

When you wake, there's a nagging feeling in the back of your mind that you know exactly who that memory belongs to.

You haven't seen or heard from your gym trainer in four days.

Raihan blinks open his eyes, there’s a weight on his chest and tiny arms resting against his skin. He takes a deep breath, lifting a hand to rest against Yache’s cool scales, the shiny Dratini fast asleep, tiny body wrapped into itself. Then his gaze flickers down to his chest, Hop is fast asleep the boys chest rising and falling slowly.

he turns his head to the side. Staring himself in the mirror, long braids falling off of the side of the bed. When did they get so long again? He feels sick and empty, his nose looks crooked. He squints, brining hand to touch the tender and slowly fading bruise across his face, dark purple with softly fading yellows. Oh, yeah, that. He blinks, startling, freezing before he can wake up the baby Pokémon and Kid on his chest.

reaching around carefully to grab his phone, he cringes as the bright light causes a sudden spike of pain to bolt through his head. There’s a clatter as the phone falls to the floor, he presses his palms to his eyes. Groaning as he tries to stifle the pain.

“Rai?”

A all too small voice calls next to him, he sighs. Letting his arms fall to the side, he looks down again the kids big eyes stare up at him.

“is something wrong?”

Hop asks softly, Raihans heart shatters a little more than he thought possible. The boy sounds so worried.

“I’m fine Hoppip, Just a bad dream. Go back to sleep”

He says softly, brining his arms back up to hug the kid. Pulling him close to his chest, as much as he wanted to text Furea he couldn’t. So all he could do was focus on what he could do, so he presses a kiss to Hops forehead. Humming softly. Praying that the girl is okay, praying that it’s going to be okay.

I really like thinking about modern AUs and trying to translate the fantastical characters of anime into something more mundane.

This modern AU came from a place of me wanting to project my 20s ennui onto the straw hats, also cus I really miss the beach and coastal towns and wanted to set a story in a town like that. But when I got to Luffy I literally couldn’t think of a job for him, cus tbh it felt wrong to make Luffy work. Luffy is not clocking in anywhere. He doesn’t have a W2. He’s that odd dude on the beach selling tie-dye shirts out of his van. He’s the friend who’s somehow got everything in life figured out even tho he’s literally homeless.

I even think you could keep the whole king of the pirates thing. Small tourists towns often have urban legends to attract ppl to come visit, and tbh “a pirate hid his treasure in one piece somewhere along this coast” is 100% the kind of legend you would find in real coastal towns. Luffy still says he’ll find Gold Rogers’ treasure and become king of the pirates, but now his whole community really thinks he’s throwing his life away.

There’s also a debate in the community on whether or not Luffy makes tourism better or worse. It certainly helps to have someone who so openly believes in the legend, but at the same time Luffy is actively swindling ppl on the beach.
