Why I love Aquakane and why you should too lol

Personally, I fell in love with the ship Aquakane since season 1 of Oshi No Ko and I was pretty upset about it not being endgame but hey least they dated for a while. But since Aquakana is gonna be endgame and I already posted why I don't like Aquakana. Read if you want to hear my opinions. I might as well do a post of why I LOVE Aquakane.

Firstly It is adorable but let me explain why I love it more than it is cute.

1 : She understands him better than Kana. You can't convince me otherwise and if say Kana the girl who barely knows Aqua understands him more than Akane then you are blind and haven't read the manga EVEN GORO SAID HIMSELF MAN.

2 : She has supported him ever since season 2, he has been honest with her, she has comforted him and been with him ever since the start and she has been with him during his happy and sad times. He clearly loved her.

3 : The Aquakane hug. People more specifically the Aquakana shippers try to make the hug between Aqua and Akane seem maternal and not romantic. I already explained how it is not maternal in my posts but here it is "So basically Akane acted on her romantic feelings for Aqua and felt Ai's feelings for Hikaru. Ruby was able to feel Ai's emotions because she had similar sadness that Ai was feeling not only that but she also had similar experiences with Ai because of the situation with Kana so therefore because she had similar experiences and feelings as Ai she was able to feel and understand Ai's emotions. Now look at Akane and Aqua and Hikaru and Ai. Akane have romantic feelings for Aqua at the time and Ai had romantic feelings for Hikaru when she hugged him not only that but I bet they felt a similar sadness at the time. Ai probably felt empathetic to Hikaru because of the Airi situation and Akane felt empathetic as when she found out Ai was Aqua's mom and she was killed. And Both Ai and Akane was in similar situations because the hug with Hikaru x Ai and Aqua x Akane were like exactly the same and symbolized to be the same. Aqua and Hikaru even had similar facial expressions. So basically the star eyes appeared NOT BECAUSE THE HUG WITH AQUAKANE WAS MATERNAL. But because Ai and Akane felt the same emotions and had the same experience which made the star eyes appear for Akane." But anyway, the hug is not motherly in any way and I basically proved it but I am not talking about this again I am talking about the fact that the hug between Aqua and Akane, might have made Aqua fall in love with Akane. Remember when Aqua was wondering what to do with Akane before he made the decision to use her one more time he was thinking about the hug aka thinking about his feelings for Akane and wanting to date her for real but then he thought no it's better to break up with her then to hold her back .

"not only that but Aqua did decide to use Akane one last time but that decision wasn't made till he was wondering what he would do with Akane since he didn't want revenge anymore and IMMEDIATELY he thought to the hug with Akane proving that he has feelings for her and he wants to date her and Aqua already says Akane got close to him and accepted him and he wants to be with her and by her side." And look at Aqua expression man he looks like he have been lovestruck so it safe to say that the Aquakane hug is what made Aqua fell for Akane.

4 : She saved him. And I know many of you say she didn't save him but if you think about it she did. She saved him from revenge and he was happy the only reason she failed is because she decided to put herself in danger and continue the revenge when all he wanted was for her to be safe and to be with her. That literally the only reason why she failed to save him and why they broke up to begin with. Not because he didn't love her he broke up with her but to protect her according to Aqua.

4: Akane makes Aqua happy. Now in Chapter 146 Aqua said that whenever he with Kana he ends up having fun and Kana knows that being happy is an important of a romantic relationship.

And you might be wondering why I am mentioning Aquakana for a Aquakane post. Because Aqua does have fun with Akane too more specifically happy with Akane as well. Like for example Aqua was smiling right after Love is Now Crew, Mem cho and Aqua saved Akane's reputation. Not only that but he got happy moments with Akane during the Toyko and one of them is saving Akane's reputation, Akane being safe in both of those moments shows that he cares about her, and his first fake date with Akane shows that he happy with her and might even be in love with her since season 1 just was in denial. Not only that but when Aqua broke up with Akane he said "Those happy days are over" so clearly he had fun and was happy with Akane as well. And I am not sure if it Akane or Aqua happy moment but either this shows he has fun and is happy with Akane OR she is happy with him as well.

5 : Aqua loves Akane. Many Kana shippers say Aqua doesn't love Akane. But I think that a false statement for many reasons. Like what Kana said : "Having fun is an important part of being in a romantic relationship." And Aqua was clearly happy with Akane and Akane was clearly happy with him. "Also, He didn't want to share an umbrella with his own girlfriend." And again if Aqua didn't wanted to share umbrella with Akane, then why he said "Those happy days are over" Huh. It either you Kana shippers didn't read the manga or you're blind because he won't say this if he didn't want to. Which means clearly he wanted to. So I also don't believe that he just say something as heartfelt as this just to make her happy. I think he actually means it more specifically the "You acknowledge someone like me, and got close to me." Which is true. She did do that. She did acknowledge him and got close to him that ain't a lie but a fact during chap 52 and chap 71 she did exactly that. And look at his memories there is the umbrella scene right, now you can say it not his happy memories and if that the case why did they appear when he was talking to Akane and not only that but Aqua said himself that "Those happy days are over." Of course, he is referring to the days with Akane. So since these memories appeared when he was talking to Akane and Aqua said "Those happy days are over." then those memories during the talk must be his happy memories with Akane. Now for the "When it's wrong, you'll say it wrong." People assumed he said that when referring to her pouting when Aqua said she would lose to Kana. Which is understables and I already explained how he might not be lying there "Maybe because he was wrong remember, in Chapter 66 Akane's friends from the Love Is Now Crew started calling her a genius actor and during the times Aqua and Akane were dating Akane was very popular and had job offers left and right so it won't be wrong that for Aqua to say this "Also, why would Aqua say she is wrong when he said Akane will lose to Kana"." But Actually I think he just found the pouting cute but when he talks about "When it's wrong, you'll say it wrong."I think he was referring to this. Aqua was blaming himself for Ruby and Akane for seeing the body in Chapter 78 [And yes I am aware that He was using her to find it but fking still] Akane said it was wrong for him to blame himself for something that the murder caused. Which is true it is. And that is what I think Aqua means by "When it's wrong, you'll say it wrong." because during that scene it is exactly what she is doing!! So I think he truly meant those words all of them including "I don't want to let go of these days when you're by my side" and he clearly does love Akane. Cause I already proved that he is happy with Akane and wants to be near her thanks to his past happy moments with Akane, The scene with him smiling when her reputation was saved and "Those happy days are over." line, Plus he was smiling at Akane during the umbrella scene. Not only that but Aqua clearly cares about Akane more than you Kana stans realizes. Because he saved her from killing herself in season 1 and Aqua was the one who had the idea of making that post and video which saved her reputation and not that but he literally asked for her to stop doing dangerous things. And broke up with her to keep her safe. And even here Akane says "He always cares about me," If that doesn't show enough how much she means to him then I don't know what does. Aqua always thought he shouldn't be in love but now he thinks it is okay and obviously, he thinking about his feelings for Akane and making the decision to date her for real. And I already explain the hug so yeah.

Also you know what I just realized If Aqua don't love Akane then why did Taikia say this. This imply he love them both and he need to choose between them. But yea besides from that

So yea this is why I love Aquakane as a ship, I am serious when I say I fell in love with it since season 1 and I love so damn much so yea Credits to @skania for some of the points and Again you don't have to like Aquakane okay many people don't. But I just wanted to explain why I ship and what makes them adorable so I hope you enjoy this post. Lol

Bonus in Season 2 of Oshi No Ko episode 10 Not only do we get Akane worrying about Aqua and his safety as we see with the text messages but when Aqua was thinking if it is okay for him to be free and live happily, you know who was there AKANE. Proving my point even more that Akane does make him happy and he does love Akane.

i really want to add one thing that im so glad that the makers of the sex education didn't make the secondary romantic characters to the main cast to be complete assholes or bad guys for making the primary romantic characters to stand out more. while we're who's gonna end up with whom at the season finale, i really want to praise the characters of isaac, ruby & rahim to be such unique characters that made me so emotionally connected to them.

1. Ruby

so ruby williams, at first to most people like me, she definitely rubbed off as haughty & a spoiled brat who bullied people & never cared enough for anybody who isn't ready to take her orders. then by the end of s2 we discover she & otis have sex 'accidentally' & that leads to their 'casual relationship' in s3. but im literally shocked at how layered her character was. the makers really chose to save the best for later, she turns out to be a sensitive girl, a caring daughter and a really romantic person who hid all her good qualities with a bitchy-regina-george type attitude, when she is infact far from that. she did deserve better, but not as in otis-saying-i-love-you-back type better because otis actually never loved her. if otis had lied to her just to have sex with her, it would've been cruel & unkind to someone as honest as ruby. otis indeed did the right thing by telling her the truth. ofc it was hurtful but it was the right thing to do. i hope she finds someone who actually deserves her love in the later seasons.

2. Isaac

well well, what do we say about this character.? im completely gine for him. when i watched s2 i never actually thought id be writing something nice about him, who tried to have maeve by unfair means. who would've thought isaac would be this precious & this kind! he knows maeve inside out, he knows her favourite breakfast, he draws her face using his mouth & captures the exact look on her face, he cares about her & her family, he is like a best friend, a brother & a lover all wrapped in one for maeve. he is one of the most charming characters on the show ever, & i cant help shipping him with maeve even though i shipped otis & maeve for the past 2 seasons like crazy

okay so i didn't mean to include him in this but how can i talk about sex education without talking about one of my most fave characters 😭😭😭😭 tbh, Adam's character had the greatest arc on the show. the character development from s1 to s3 was phenomenal & i can't help praising adam like my life depends on it! first we see an immature, big-dick-flaunting asshole & a bully in s1 who by the end discovers that he was confused about his sexuality. then he struggles with the confusion & his communication skills with his parents & friends throughout s2 & by the end he accepts the fact that he wasn't straight. then he goes on dating this guy he had a crush on since s1 but he also struggles to show his true feelings, but still tries to overcome his insecurities for his boyfriend. he educates himself, he accepts himself, he tries to be as good as he could...but he still struggles because if emotional negligence. ofc by the end what happens to him is...😔😔😔 but im so proud if my boy adam & my love for him has increased 10 fold! he's still a vulnerable baby in his heart who needs more care, love & attention. someone protect him pleaseeeee 🥺🥺🥺

Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card Chapter 58: Comments + JP-ENG translation differences

Helloooo everyone, let's start this week with a new chapter of Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card!! It hasn't been that long since we were all here commenting over chapter 57, isn't it? Well, I must say this new chapter was a nice blend of foreshadowings, red flags, pathos, and dreams. It feels like a baloon that is inflating, more and more, and we're at the point where it's about to pop.

Surprisingly enough, there weren't many incorrect translations this time, but there is one where all the words are completely different, and ended up partly burying the full intentions of a character. Guess who are the characters involved in this case? Hahaha, if you follow me since long enough, you already know who's involved. 😂 (we'll laugh about it, to not cry in exasperation)

But I'll let the gif of the month ask the question we're all left with, after reading this chapter...

The color page

First of all, forgive me if I'm going to use screenshots straight up from the Youtube video, but my JP raws won't be available until December 1st, since Comic-days decided to postpone the release to that date 😫(which, by the way, what was that mess with the release dates? Amazon still has it for December 5th, wtf???)

We have our lovely Moon guardians, this time! 🥰 If I remember correctly, this is the first time we have Ruby Moon in her true form on the color page...after the double spread of last month, it feels almost automatic that it had to be about these two! Now all the guardians are featured in their true forms 😊 Momo's source of power hasn't been specified yet, but now it makes me wonder if she's Sun-based (or something completely different like Time). The editorial text over this color page says "Two creatures, created by Clow Reed, and having the same attribute of the Moon" . Just lovely! 😊

A Sad World

CLAMP sensei keep telling us the story of the two Alice, as imagined by our dear Naoko, for the upcoming play! It's not very clear if we're exploring the other Alice now (the one who can't go back home) or we keep being told the story of the first one (the one who wanders in a world of dreams), personally I think it's the latter. This Alice, indeed, keeps wandering over and over in this mysterious world of dreams, guided by her faithful black cat, speaking or reading fluently in several languages (Akiho can speak and read different languages, it's her strong point) and fighting wind (Gale), water (Aqua), even sweets (Action), and even when she got trapped (Siege), it was okay, because her dear cat was there for her, manipulating Time to help her out (can you see the miscellaneous callbacks?). As you can see from the screenshot above, there's literally Kaito's magic circle under the black cat, so I think the analogy is even more apparent now, isn't it? 😁

Allow me to share this one more close-up for a moment, because I seriously started wheezing when I saw it 😂😂:

LMAO Kaito the Cat is so intent in protecting his Alice, that is throwing himself into the battle 😂😂 It's a very mysterious world, and it's not like Alice can ever get bored in it (a small part omitted in the ENG translation), but she suddenly thinks that, although she can do and see whatever she wants, even stuff that in her world of origin wouldn't be possible, as if it was just magic, in this world...there's none of the people she loves dearly. While the black cat looks at her (almost puzzled, if you ask me....), Alice sheds some tears, while saying "This world is very...sad"

We're back at our normal storyline, and Akiho & Sakura have just uttered in unison the last word above. They're checking out the play's script with the screenwriter herself, and Naoko explains a little bit how she created this story. Remember Natsume Soseki's "Ten Nights of Dreams" featured in chapter 10 of Clear Card? Let me jog your memory:

In fact, both Akiho and Sakura mention having read aloud parts of this story in class. Naoko explains that all the 10 stories featured are dreams, and there's never a precise point in which the storyteller wakes up from them (in that regard, I'm not sure why they translated this in ENG as "the reader never wakes up", it doesn't make much sense? But I don't know the story, so) so this led her to think "It's quite a scary thing, to never wake up from a dream".

My face when I've read the line above:

Ominous sentence nonchalantly said by a character: check The bubble with said sentence takes up almost the entire page at the center: check I think we have all the elements to say that this is foreshadowing?? 😅😅 if we have to try and theorize how this could relate to the Clear Card plot, what it could be possibly referring to? Is Sakura dreaming all of this? Or is it....Akiho, the one dreaming? And if it's true, what will it take to wake them up? Is this happening right now, or in the future? I just can't help but immediately think again about Fujitaka and the mention of lucid dreams, the ones where you realize you're dreaming and can steer the events in the direction you want.....

The Two Alice take up their roles

Our creative Naoko started from such ominous thought to think up the story of the Two Alice (bless her and her dark mind), story that she could complete thanks to Akiho's advices and the two friends' similarities. Naoko therefore thanks them, and the two girls (always in a terrifying unison) promise to try their best. Now! It's time to decide WHO will play each of the two Alice!

But there's a fast-forward, and we find out how it went from Sakura and Syaoran, who are going back home from school. Apparently, Sakura will play the Alice who wanders in the dream world, even though she initially offered herself to play the other one. The SyaoSaku bit lasts very short, as we're immediately catapulted at the Shinomoto mansion, where a conversation between Akiho and Kaito is happening at the very same time as SyaoSaku's (istg, are we sure only Sakura and Akiho are the ones synchronizing, at this point? 😂) Let's grab a seat if you're not sitting yet, because the rest of the chapter all the way to the end is gonna be emotional, and also where effectively lies the plot progression of this chapter.

Akiho will play the Alice who can't go back home. She admits Sakura also was hoping to play that part, but if possible Akiho requested that she'd be the one playing that Alice....because...she feels she can understand this Alice's feelings quite well. And as if to not leave any doubt as to what she's referring to, we have a flashback of little Akiho, in the same position and clothes of when a child Kaito "examined" her from afar, announcing she had not a trace of magic in her. All the sadness, loneliness, isolating feeling of being left out from your own home, being sent away at a very young age...Akiho knows very well all of that. I want to just point out that I didn't like how in the ENG translation it seems as if Akiho "snatched" the role, imposing herself over Sakura "because I just had to be her". That's so out of character and obviously not at all how Akiho would behave. In fact, in the JP version, it's very well specified that she asked if possible to be the one playing that Alice. You know, just to make it clear.

Let me worry about YOU

We have the return of The Hand™. Yeah, since it seems this will happen more than once, I've given it a name 😂😂 The Hand™ is different than a regular hand, because regular hands listen to what their owner says, while THIS Hand here is all intent in making his owner as miserable as possible, by mutinying against him at the least appropriate moments. 😂😂😂 So just like last time, Kaito sees Akiho's sweet face darkening with sadness, and he's overwhelmed with the compelling need to console her, comfort her, creating a connection between them, that he himself has carefully avoided till now. Before The Hand™ can reach Akiho's head to caress her, he manages to stop it, but this time, hehe, our Akiho sees it. Kaito is caught red-handed (OKAY I'LL STOP 😅) and he's forced to make up a lie about seeing something in her hair, to explain his position. All while he hides The Hand™ behind his back, literally clutching it with the other one. You never know when the Beast might move on its own again. 😂 And now, ladies and gentlemen, we have the return of Assertive Akiho! (so many tropes in this manga 😂) Akiho sees *once again* Kaito acting strange, and she says:

JP: As I already told you, please rest.

I'm not sure if in the ENG version is clear enough, but in the JP text there's that やっぱり that gives a "See? I was right" nuance to the "You need to rest" warning that she's been giving him since that morning (yeah, yeah, chapter 57 and 58 happen in the same day!). Akiho seems sliiiiightly fed up with his recklessness 😂

Kaito consequently says something that honestly killed me while I was reading that part in Japanese. He's so damn harsh with himself.

JP: "it seems like I made you worry, I'm a total failure at being your attendant"

This is more or less the same in the ENG version, but the word 随伴者, zuihansha, caught my attention. It's a word he or other characters never used before, to describe him. It translates as "attendant, someone who waits on or tends to or attends to the needs of another", but also as "accompanying person". Also, I checked all the possible meanings of the word 失格, and I found "disqualification; elimination; incapacity; being unfit for one's role; being a failure"

I'm not sure, but I get the feeling Kaito here is basically degrading himself more than necessary in front of Akiho, using a very polite speech, over the mere fact that he's making her worry. The more polite, the more distance he creates between them, but Akiho is not keen on playing this game again, so she calls him out and says "It's not true!!". She stands up, and in a very emotional scene, she asks him if it bothers him that much, that she's worrying about him. You can practically hear her say "let me worry about you, let me at least do that". Kaito denies, with a tender smile, and says he only wants her to think about herself first, above anything, above anyone. Only about herself. This part, in Japanese, features an additional あなたの事を ("About you") and might actually be *the first time* Kaito uses "anata" to address Akiho in the manga. I have to check line by line to be honest, but I remember he always used to repeat her name in the sentence, or using generic pronouns (ご自分). In a manga where pronouns are such a big deal (Kaito's ore or Syaoran switching from omae to no pronoun at all with Sakura), I wonder if this might hide a subtlety. Anyways, Akiho replies that she already thinks about herself...but she wants to think about him, too.

And here we have probably the only biggest translation difference of this chapter (there's something later too, actually, but it's a mismatched line), I honestly don't understand why they translated it like this.

ENG: I care about you. JP: And I want to do it (precisely) because it's you, Kaito-san.

Now, if we want to scratch all the levels of subtleties Akiho carefully implemented in her line, we could say that, at the end of the day, both sentences mean the same thing. Akiho cares about him, that's obvious. But that's not what she said. She wasn't so blunt, so curt. Akiho knows Kaito, we've been saying this time and time again since forever. She knows she cannot be too direct, or Kaito will run away and put more walls between them, just like it happened in chapter 52. She's learned the hard way, and so in her line there isn't only the "I want to care about you" message, there's also the "you're special to me, Kaito-san. Thinking about you is *also* taking care of myself. Because you, being yourself, are precious to me". The connotation of "because it's you" is totally lost in the ENG translation, and that's a huge pity in my opinion. Especially cause this creates a parallel. Who else said "because it's you", back in chapter 32?

Momo got so angry at Kaito, after this scene 😅 Because he was expressing how special Akiho is to him, while not realizing in the least what that meant.

Kaito is surprised at Akiho's words, and I'm sure he'll have a lot to think about in the next days...did anyone ever tell him something like that? That he's a special existence to someone? I don't really think so. We will see how Kaito will behave with Akiho, after this "additional piece" added to the effort Akiho is putting in conveying her feelings to him, in the most delicate and respectful way possible. Akiho just wants to take care of him, since she knows he isn't feeling well, and she needs him to let her do at least that.

What is true? And what is false?

The scene moves finally to Sakura's dream, where she sees MCF again. I think the last time it happened in a dream was Chapter 48, right? Sakura doesn't seem to be scared or hesitating in front of MCF anymore. She's gained a self-confidence she didn't have before, because now she knows. She knows more things, she found out that Kaito's got magic, she can feel something is inside Akiho, and she's finally tuned in with her own perceptiveness, listening to what her heart says, let alone the fact that she's more sure than ever that Syaoran would never betray her.

So with a very smart observation ("You're still as tall as me, while Syaoran-kun had a growth spurt lately"), she shots the question:

JP & ENG: Are you Akiho-chan?

Sakura wakes up in her bed, a light floating over her. Knowingly (like she's used, by now, to these kind of events) she chants "Secure!" and captures a new Card, "True or False", featuring Naoko on it! And look what we have here, again the play with words where the kanji features a word, but the furigana features another one (which wasn't portrayed in the ENG translation, but they couldn't do much about this)!

JP: What is False (dream)? And what is True (reality)?

Sakura goes downstairs to drink some water, but in the kitchen she very conveniently (wink, wink) finds Touya, with a saucepan in his hands, about to heat up something. He tells her to sit down, and Sakura realizes he's preparing some hot milk with honey for her!!

Here there's another translation mistake: the bubble with "Here. Warm milk and honey" is mistakenly attributed to Touya, when in fact it's actually Sakura's, happily noticing the warm drink Touya made for her. I mean, the shape of the bubble was kinda telling, Touya doesn't talk in that lively manner. 😅😅😅*sigh*

Sakura actually takes this opportunity to ask advice to her brother, about what he does when he can't discern what's true from what's not. I really loved this conversation between siblings, because Touya's answer put to rest much of the anxiety that had been arising in my chest during the reading of this chapter.

Basically, if it's up to him to choose what's true and what's not, then he would go for whatever it is he doesn't want to lose.

I found this...so enlightening. And meaningful. Especially cause Touya is looking at Sakura quite intensely, while saying this.

You see, my fear with all this talk of dreams and what not is that Akiho, Kaito and Momo might be something fleeting, and leave at the end of the story without being something concrete, tangible, with which Sakura can keep her bond and contact forever. Almost as if they never existed. And I wouldn't really like that.

But Touya's message gave me great hope. Because yes, Sakura will certainly choose her love, family and friends, but I'm confident she will also choose to not leave Akiho & Kaito behind. She will find a way to make all these things coexist, and I know she can do it. As Eriol said, she's capable of making the Time Manipulator™ understand what really matters, before it's too late. And they'll find together a way to save Akiho. Akiho, right now, is real, flesh and bones, but if the Book inside of her takes over her, and destroys her soul, it's over. Akiho will be no more. She'll be gone, like a dream. And I'm sure Akiho too, for her part, will decide what she wants to be true and what not. So thank you, Onii-chan, for this light of hope! 🙏

Touya goes back to his room, leaving Sakura wondering over "what I don't want to lose". And here, the chapter ends.

Woooow, 31 pages this time around! After being used to chapters of 27/28 pages, those few additional ones feel like a treasure 😁 So we had the Alice roles finally assigned, Sakura making the Big Question to MCF in her dream and capturing a new Card, and another building block added to Kaito and Akiho's relationship. Next chapter is gonna be presumably the last one of the future volume 12, so expect a super cliffhanger from hell!!! 😁

It over a year and i still cant believe the girls went for plan: lets move every citizen to Vacuo without any food, any water, any housing, instead of plan: talking to James? Like yo maybe lets not aim for space, lets aim for Argus or Vacuo! Lets try to take as many people as we can and then lets get the fuck out of here, ay? Or you know if they wanted to stand their ground do that and let Altas + all the people who evacuated already flee. That would have been actually an interesting volume. Them defending Mantle on their own and seeing Salem pass over them because she wants atlas and the girls trying to get there first or help it. Also would have loved if they discussed the difference of wanting to protect people vs wanting to protect the relic. Because in this situation you couldnt had both, like we saw Salem got the relic. But the show dont really touch on that.

Hey anon! Trust me I cannot believe the show decided to go with that either it is honestly kind of insane when you think about it. The girls really went, "I know we don't have a plan and Salem is coming and everyone is exhausted after dealing with all of the Grimm that came thanks to Jacques BUT we don't like your plan and we're going to literally sabotage it and commit mutiny over it and THEN we'll start crying uncontrollably when we realize how hard this is." And then went BRILLIANT. Like my gosh another friend and I actually discussed how cool this premise would be, letting Atlas flee and Ruby having to lead the remaining civilians to like Argus or something and playing a terrifying game of cat and mouse as Salem goes after Atlas and she sends Grimm and such after the civilians. It could have been a great volume filled with tension as Ruby is forced to put her leadership skills to the ultimate test and try to lead thousands of terrified and confused people to safety (or just protecting them in Mantle) and discovering how difficult it is and being forced to face the fact that nothing she does will please.....anyone. And no matter what people will be angry and blame her even though she is just trying to do what she thinks is best and realize some people just don't care but she pushes through and keeps going and proves herself as a leader. It could have actually made the mains the main heroes AND culled the cast some to make a more manageable cast to follow.

In regards to the whole RWBY vs James thing. I think saying protecting people vs protecting the relics is a little too simplistic of the bigger picture. What's really happening in RWBY is looking at keeping people alive short term while James is thinking about keeping people alive long term. In his mind saving all of Mantle will be pointless if Salem gets all the relics and ends the world. And currently after Atlas, Salem in essence has control of three of the relics because with the lamp she can easily get the third relic and with the three relics taking Vacuo's relic will be Childs play. James does not want to have the world find itself in a satiation with the ultimate bad guys having control of arguably the most powerful relic that she can use to destroy Vacuo. I know the show insists she can't with words but with what we've seen the staff do....that limitation realistically does not exist, and the relics have not been created with any desire to do what they can to limit themselves in usefulness with Salem or her people so that's not even really an argument. Ruby on the other hand (fueled in my headcannons by trauma from Beacon) can't stand the thought of losing anyone and focuses on short term keeping people alive. That is the crux of it, Ruby still has hope and believes that love can win out, while James has been broken down and hardened by the war against Salem and doesn't think it is possible to get the relics and all of Mantle and Atlas to safety. He feels like he has no choice but to well chose, and in his mind, ensuring the entire world survives is more important then the few. It's certainly dark and sounds awful but sometimes those difficult choices just....have to be made. But we could have had a volume of Ruby restoring faith and hope and finding a realistic way of saving both all of the civilians and the relics. But the show couldn't be bothered to come up with something so they went with "Make James evil" and hope no one notices how nonsensical it all becomes.

I want to believe and be rooting for the main characters, but with RWBY as is right now....I just can't. The show is to lazy to properly build all of this up and just rushes through it, logic be damned and it badly hurts the show in the long run and forces them into these ridiculous corners they have to try and find their way out of.
