summer getaway
drew starkey x latina actress reader!
Your heart was really happy at the moment.
Drewâs family had kindly invited you to join them in their annual summer vacation at their summer house in North Carolina.
You would only be joining them for a week, because you were planning on visiting home in Mexico as well.
Jodi and Todd had been really nice asking you to join the family as they couldnât imagine the trip without you.
And of course, Drew had not missed the opportunity of telling you how much you two would enjoy the little trip.
So you totally agreed.
And thatâs how you two were currently enjoying the afternoon, watching the soon to be sunset on some chairs on the garden at the back of the house, while the rest of his family busied themselves inside.
Oh how you loved quiet moments like this.
You were sitting on Drewâs lap, he had one of his arms around your waist, while the other one rested on your leg.
You were hugging him, with both arms around his neck, while one of your hands played with his wispy hair at the nape of his neck, your nails scraping softly against his skin.
Drew sighed in content as he closed his eyes for a second.
âThat feels goodâ he mumbled, leaning his head on your chest, giving you more space to work with.
You laughed softly at him.
âYeah?â you asked softly, as you continued your movements, loving how he could absolutely melt under your touch at any moment. âI love your hair like thisâ you say, while running your fingers through his hair.
He had let his hair grown a little, going for a wispy kind of mullet.
And oh could he pull off any look.
You were kinda jealous.
âYou love it huh?â he said teasingly as he moved back his head from your chest so he could look at you. âIâm gonna have to cut it off eventually dollâ he said, as he removed his hand from your leg, so he was now holding your face.
You pouted at him.
âWhat if I convince you not to?â you asked playfully, leaning in to peck his lips, still playing with his hair.
He groaned into the kiss as you pulled back, smiling at him.
âYouâre badâ he says, leaning in to kiss you again, before you both break apart at the sound of someone clearing their throat.
You two look back and find Brooke, Drewâs sister, peeking her head out from inside the house.
âDinner is ready love birds!â she says smiling at both of you, just before going back inside the house.
Your cheeks heat up in embarrassment, while you hide your face in the crook of Drewâs neck.
He lets out a laugh while he softly soothes your back with one of his hands.
âOh my god I feel like a teenager that just got caughtâ you say into his neck.
He softly chuckles at your comment while placing a kiss on the top of your head, finding it funny and adorable how flustered you got any time his family catched any type of PDA from you together.
âLetâs get some dinner dollâ he says, standing up from the chair with you in his arms.
You let out a shriek in surprise, as you wrap both your arms around his neck to support yourself.
âDrew put me down!â you say, laughing and watching him laugh at your reaction.
He shakes his head in amusement as he walks with you in his arms towards the house.
âJust enjoy the ride loveâ he says placing a soft kiss on your temple, as he takes you inside the house for you to have dinner with his family.
After dinner, you and Drew offered to pick up table and clean up everything. His family had worked so hard to put everything up, so it was your turn to do something.
âIâll do the dishesâ you say, walking to the sink and starting to clean them up.
Contrary to popular opinion, you loved doing dishes.
There was something so calming and relaxing about getting your hands soapy, bubbly and extra clean that just did something to you.
âIâll clean up the tableâ he said, walking off before pecking your lips, leaving you smiley.
You could hear the clatter of forks and plates, and then, he was walking into the kitchen once again.
âAlexa, play lover by Taylor Swiftâ Drew said out loud, making you turn your head and look at him with a smile, while he gave you a playful look.
Your heart warmed as he approached you and offered you his hand.
âMay I?â he said, giving you a big smile.
You could feel the butterflies going crazy in your stomach, and it made you smile even harder.
Quickly, you turned around to rinse your hands while patting them dry, only to face him as he pulled you in.
His hands moved to your waist, and you tangled yours around his neck, looking up at him with an adoring look.
âYou know how to charm a girlâ you say, feeling like the luckiest girl in the world.
He chuckled softly as he looked down at you between his arms.
âI only care about charming youâ he says, twirling you softly and catching you back, pulling you close to him. âThatâs all I ever wantâ.
His words make your heart flutter, as you rest your head on his chest, enjoying the kitchen dancing session.
With Taylorâs songs behind you, you feel content and at peace, honestly, wherever Drew was, as long as he was with you, you were at peace.
âI love you babyâ he says, swaying you both to the rhythm of the song, while he places a soft kiss at the top of your head, while his thumb slowly draws gentle circles on your waist.
You could stay like that forever.
At his words, you look up at him, moving one of your hands that played with the hair on his neck, to his cheek, grazing it softly.
âI love you more mi amorâ you say, unable to hide the smile appeared on your face.
He leans down and captures your lips on a kiss that communicates everything youâre both feeling without needing words.
Unbeknownst to both of you, his family was watching, more like peaking, your little romantic moment.
And they had been getting glimpses of your love throughout the trip.
They loved to see their son in love.
In love with you.
Being loved how it should be.
Having you as part of the family.
They knew you were both lucky to have found each other.
The next morning, you were back in the kitchen.
You had offered to cook breakfast for the family, telling them how you wanted to show them a typical mexican breakfast that you knew they would all love.
Drew as always, had offered to help you, being the one who always tried all your recipes.
âIs it good?â you asked, after he tasted your green sauce for chilaquiles.
You liked cooking. You werenât the best, but you definitely werenât the worse.
It was enough to make your mom proud, and you could work with that.
Drew paused for a moment as he closed his eyes and moaned in pleasure.
âItâs delicious babyâ he said, as he enjoyed the flavors dancing on his tongue.
You squinted your eyes at him, not truly believing his words.
âBe completely honest amorâ you said, leaning your hips against the counter, looking at him attentively. âYou wonât hurt my feelings if you tell me somethingâs missingâ you admitted giving him a smile.
Drew paused for a moment, before going back and trying the sauce one more time.
He hesitated, his eyes closed, concentrating.
âMaybe a little bit of saltâ he said, one eye open waiting for your reaction.
You smiled at him while playfully hitting him on the chest.
âYouâre so dramaticâ you said laughing, before turning to the stove and adding a bit more salt to finish everything up.
He laughed before placing his hands on your waist, and resting his chin on the crown of your head.
âAnd youâre amazingâ he said, silently enjoying the domestic side of you two being on vacation, sharing with family or not.
You hummed at his words, resting your back on his broad chest.
âHelp me serve the plates?â You said, turning around and pecking his lips softly.
Drew scrunched his nose in annoyance as you broke the kiss, looking at him with a smile.
âLetâs make them wait a little longerâ he said, wrapping one of his arms around your waist pulling you in, the other one around the back of your neck capturing your lips in a kiss.
You smile between his arms.
Later that night, everyone was chilling and winding down from spending the day out on the beach.
You and Drew were laying down on the couch. You were watching a marvel movie playing on the tv, while he attempted to read a few pages of a book he hadnât picked up once since arriving at the summer house.
He was trying really hard to stay focused on his book but he seemed to fail, because from what you could see from your position on top of him laying your head on his chest, around 10 minutes had passed and he hadnât flipped his book page.
You giggled softly as he tore his eyes away from the tv to look down at you.
âWhatâs so funny?â He smiles sheepishly at you, holding his book with one hand.
You lifted your head, resting your chin on his chest to be able to meet his eyes.
âYouâre getting distractedâ you say smiling at him. âJust give up already and enjoy the movie amorâ.
He hesitates for a moment, looking between the tv, his book, and you.
He sighs, shaking his head and smiling.
âIâm weakâ he says closing his book and leaving it next to him on the couch.
You giggle softly before going back to resting your head on his chest and watching the movie, wrapping your arms around his waist.
âEverybodyâs weak when Avengers Endgame is playingâ you say, getting immediately lost in the film again.
Drew chuckles softly as one of his hands finds its way to your back, drawing circles, lulling you to sleep. While the other, tangled itself in your hair, scratching your scalp tenderly.
Your eyes began to flutter at his gentle touches.
The weight of being out on the beach all day, mixed with Drewâs fingers against your skin, were making it harder for you to stay awake.
Your eyes were fighting to stay open and continue watching the movie, because no matter how many times you watched it, you loved it every time.
But next thing you knew, you had fallen asleep over Drew.
He didnât realize when exactly you had fallen asleep.
But when he looked down at you to watch your reaction over Black Widowâs death, he smiled at you being completely asleep and relaxed.
His heart fluttered at the adorable sight before him.
He had to capture it.
So he reached for his phone and stopped breathing for a second to get a perfect picture of you mid dream.
âWhat are you guys-â Logan, Drewâs brother, came into the living room and paused mid sentence as Drew sent him a death glare signaling for him to shut up.
Logan lifted his arms in sign of peace, as he slowly walked into the room, silently sitting on the individual couch, immediately getting into the movie.
You were still deeply asleep.
An earthquake could hit and you probably wouldnât notice.
So Drew threw his phone somewhere next to him, and went back to watching the movie and cradling you between his arms.
He could stay like that forever and he would be the happiest man on earth.

Saw you're taking requests and decided to toss one your way!
Agatha x reader, reader has had a really tough day and Agatha helps put her into subspace to relax. Some soft!dom Agatha with a splash of praise, degradation, mommy and maybe some size kink? And of course some fluffy aftercare after reader has been thoroughly fucked out of her mindâ€
Hope you enjoy! (Disclaimer: I've never written subspace before so hopefully I did it justice, along with everything else you wanted)
Bad day
When Agatha comes home to find that you had a bad day, she takes it upon herself to make you feel better
Word count: 2600
Warnings: praise kink, degradation kink, subspace, size kink, mommy kink, oral, strap-on, aftercare, smut, and fluff (I may have missed one)
Youâre on your last nerve when you get to your afternoon class on Wednesday.Â
Your car didnât start in the morning so your girlfriend, Agatha, had to drop you off at work, which youâd never complain about, except she had still been asleep when this happened so you were almost late because she had to get ready.Â
And then work was awful. You had a shift at the popular retail store in town and it seemed like every customer who came in was on a mission to personally ruin your day.Â
From dissatisfaction with the prices to vomit all over the restroom floor, it seemed like nothing could go right.Â
Agatha had been at work herself so you had to call one of your college friends to give you a ride after.Â
And now you had to sit in a class on Personality Theory for the next three hours and listen to your professor drone off on tangents. You would be getting your tests back from last week though, and you were hoping you had done well.Â
âAlright, before we get started, Iâll go ahead and pass out your exams. Once I call your name, you can come up and look at it,â your professor says and you anxiously tap your fingers on the desk while you wait for your turn.Â
Finally, he says your name. Butterflies in your stomach, you walk to the front to look and itâs like youâve been punched in the gut.Â
There must be something wrong, you donât understand how you missed this many.Â
Red ink stains the page and you have to clench your jaw together to keep your composure. Tears prick at your eyes as you hand the exam back to your professor and head back to your seat, burning with shame.Â
It seems like itâs just one thing after another.Â
You barely pay attention for the rest of class, head spinning with thoughts of how bad you did, how everything sucks, how you just want to go home.Â
Agatha texts you a few times during the three hour time span, just checking in on you, but you donât even respond. She always says that you get too wrapped up in your own brain and you know sheâs right. You do let her know that you wonât need a ride home, not sure you could take the older womanâs softness right now.Â
You just want to take a shower and lie in bed.Â
Class finally ends and you order an Uber instead of asking a friend to take you home. When you get in these moods, you donât want to talk to anyone.Â
You grunt in response to the driverâs question of asking how you are and then the rest of the ride is spent in silence. Itâs not often you get in such a foul mood, but when it does, itâs tough.Â
When you make it through the front door of Agathaâs home, you immediately collapse on the couch and breathe in the blanket that still has her scent. Sheâll be home soon and now you just want her to give you a big hug and tell you that everything will be alright.Â
You hear keys jingle in the front door maybe ten minutes later and you sit up on the couch expectantly, heartbeat picking up. Youâve been with Agatha for six months now and she still managed to have the same effect on you that she had at the beginning.Â
âHey, baby,â she calls out, seeing the lights on, and she makes her way to the living room to find you swaddled in her favorite blanket on the couch. She frowns, instantly able to tell something is wrong. Usually you get up to give her a kiss. âYou okay?âÂ
And then itâs like a dam breaks. You start sobbing and telling her all the things that have gone wrong that day and she instantly sits down next to you, engulfing you into a hug and whispering that everything will be okay.Â
She lets you cry for a bit, hand stroking your hair, making soothing sounds. Eventually, you calm down enough to take slow, shaky breaths.Â
âIâm sorry, doll. Sounds like you had a rough day,â she says, pressing a kiss to your head and wiping the tears off your cheeks. You nod in agreement. âIs there anything I can do to help?âÂ
You shrug while you think about it. And then you lean in and chastely kiss her lips.Â
When you pull back, sheâs smirking.Â
âYou want mommy to help you?â She coos and instantly, a fire awakens in your belly at the use of your favorite name for her. Your head bobs up and down eagerly but she tuts and grabs your jaw to hold it still. âWords, baby.âÂ
âYes please, mommy,â you whisper. No one can make you feel as good as Agatha can.Â
âGood girl,â Agatha hums and the fire gets worse. âWhat do you want?âÂ
You squirm on the couch, just looking at her, begging with wide eyes.Â
âWhy donât you show me what you want?â You whine and grab her hand and bring it down to your shorts. âOh, do you want me to touch you?âÂ
âPlease,â you force out again. âTouch me, mommy.âÂ
Her grin is wicked as she lays you back down on the couch, positioning herself so sheâs holding her weight above you. Your noses are almost close enough to touch.Â
âDoes my little baby want me to reward her like the perfect little angel that she is?â Agatha purrs and you gasp, feeling your head start to get fuzzy. She plays with the waistband of your shorts and your hips buck up involuntarily. You make a sort of strangled noise from your throat â all you can do, really â and she shushes you. âJust relax, doll. Let mommy take care of you.â You whimper as she kisses your nose and moves down your body to undress you.Â
You feel like youâre on a different planet when Agatha pats your waist so you can lift yourself up for her to take your shorts and underwear off.Â
âThere we go, so good for me,â she says, leaving kisses against your thighs. You moan, senses heightened. You babble something incoherently and you can hear her chuckling at you. âBaby, youâre absolutely dripping for me.âÂ
Her fingers move up and down your slit, collecting wetness, and sounds are pulled out of your mouth by her administration.Â
âDoes that feel good, hon?âÂ
Your head lulls back on the couch and you try to say something to affirm her question.Â
âAw, is my little baby in subspace right now?â Something in the back of your mind tells you that you must be, but youâre too blissed out to answer.Â
And then her tongue is on your pussy and you couldnât say a word even if you tried. If you didnât already feel like you were floating then, you sure do now. Your back arches off the couch as she sucks on your clit but her hands come up to hold you down.Â
âBe a good girl for me and let mommy do all the work.âÂ
Your moans get louder as she keeps eating you out and youâve never felt this good before. Itâs like all your worries and stress and frustration that built up over the day are melting away to leave you in a puddle of pleasure.Â
âMommy, so close,â you slur, hands digging into the couch beneath you. Her teeth scrape against your clit and she moans into you and it sends you into an explosive orgasm.Â
Youâre not sure youâve ever cum that hard.Â
She licks you through it and you have to pull her away after a while because you become sensitive.Â
Agatha comes up to kiss you, long and hard, and you can taste yourself on her tongue.Â
âDo you want to try something new tonight, baby?â She asks once she pulls away and you nod eagerly before even asking what it is. You trust her more than anyone. âIâll be right back.â She gives you one last parting kiss and quickly runs upstairs.Â
Sheâs up there for a few minutes while you lay on the couch, still in a trance-like haze.Â
And then she comes back down and your mouth falls open.Â
Attached to her hips is the biggest strap-on youâve ever seen. She must have just bought it. You had gotten to where you could take the toys you had pretty easily, but you are certain that this will stretch you out so much more than them.Â
âMommy,â you whisper, eyes widening as she comes back over to the couch. You can see that sheâs holding lube in one hand.Â
âMommy wants to see if your tiny, little pussy can fit her big cock,â she says and a thrill runs through you despite yourself. âMight have to work you up to it.âÂ
Your legs part without thinking and she laughs.Â
âSo desperate for me, arenât you? My perfect, little slut.â You gasp at the words, feeling yourself get even more wet.Â
While you loved the praise from her, degradation almost turned you on more.Â
âYou have to relax, baby,â she reminds you, moving to kneel on the couch between your legs and pushing them even more open. She rubs your clit and slides two fingers in easily. You grind up on her fingers, trying to pull them in more. âLook at how well you take my fingers. So good for mommy. You canât get enough of them, can you?âÂ
You shake your head and groan when she curls them just right.Â
âSuch a good whore for mommy,â she sighs. âCan you take another?âÂ
âPlease,â you gasp out, walls clenching around the two already inside you. She pulls them and you feel empty, but that feeling is quickly gone when she pushes three in you. The stretch feels so good and your hips meet her every thrust, the pleasure in you already growing.Â
And then itâs gone. Your head flies up to look at her wrapping the hand wet with you around her strap and coating it. And then she opens the bottle of lube and pours a hefty amount in her other hand to also stroke the toy with.Â
âAre you ready, baby?âÂ
âGo slow, mommy,â you tell her, even though you know that she will. âYouâre so big.âÂ
âYouâre going to look so pretty, sweetheart, stretched around my big cock,â she says and positions the tip at your entrance. âLike a little, perfect slut.Â
The first push steals all the air from your lungs.Â
âFuck,â you groan. Youâve never been so full in your life and you barely have any of it inside you. Agatha doesnât move, just rubs small circles on your thighs and waits for you to tell her youâre okay.Â
It takes a few moments for you to adjust. Itâs definitely easier in the headspace that youâre in right now.Â
âOkay,â you say and Agatha obeys, slowly moving forward inside you. She stops when your breathing gets strangled and doesnât move again until youâre back to normal.Â
âGod, your little pussy looks so good taking my big cock so well,â she grunts once she finally bottoms out. If your mind was clearer, youâd tease her about the size kink she so clearly has. âHow are you doing, baby? Can I move?âÂ
âPlease, mommy,â you beg, still feeling euphoric. Every drag of her cock against your walls now feels like heaven. She smirks and starts to move.
She starts slow at first, just short, slow strokes to make sure that youâre still comfortable, and then she starts to really fuck you.Â
The pace Agatha sets is rough and bruising and you can hear the wet, squelching sounds that the toy makes as it pushes back inside you every thrust, a mix of your wetness and lube.Â
âMommy,â is all you can pant as she fucks into you over and over again, a light sheen of sweat breaking out on her.Â
âSo fucking good, sweetheart, youâre taking my cock so well, such a perfect slut for mommy,â Agatha mutters, never slowing down once. If you were already in subspace before, youâre not sure you have a word for what state youâre in right now. There are not even semblances of thoughts in your head, there is only Agatha and the pleasure she is giving you. You canât even remember what you were in such a bad mood about earlier.Â
She reaches down to rub your clit again and you hear someone moan obscenely loudly.Â
You think it might have been you.Â
All you know is that youâre getting so close again you can taste it. She seems like she can tell because she somehow speeds up, which you didnât think was possible. Little gasps are forced out of your mouth with every push and your walls are tightening so much around her that it makes it hard for her to thrust.Â
âSo good, baby, youâre taking me so well,â Agatha chants, a hand reaching up to play with your nipple under your shirt. âSo perfect, such a perfect slut, my perfect good girl. Cum for mommy, cum all over mommyâs big cock.âÂ
She angles her hips just right and rubs your clit hard and you spasm, back bowing off the couch. Youâve never felt pleasure this extreme; it feels like youâre having an out-of-body experience. All the tension in your body is gone and you pant heavily as Agatha pulls out of you.Â
âYou okay, baby?â She asks and you wheeze a laugh.Â
âMâokay,â you say happily, a slow smile spreading onto your face. You can feel your head clearing with the loss of her touch.Â
âLet me get a washcloth, alright? Iâll be right back, I promise.â She gives you a kiss on your head and sheâs back in what seems like seconds with a warm towel. You wince at the feeling of it between her legs but it helps. âDo you want to move to bed?âÂ
You nod, but youâre not actually sure if you can stand up based on the jelly feeling in your legs. Agatha seems to understand this without you saying anything and she scoops you off the couch bridal style and carries you up the stairs.Â
You giggle and burrow your head into the crook of her neck, breathing her in and feeling her against you.Â
âYou did so good, baby,â she whispers.Â
âThank you, Agatha. I really needed that.âÂ
She pauses for a second in the hallway to peck your lips. âI know you did. Iâm happy to help, sweetheart. Whatever you need.âÂ
Once in the bedroom, Agatha helps you into some comfy pajamas and makes you take sips of water from the bottle on her nightstand. You lay down and she pulls the covers over you both, pulling you close to her so she can wrap an arm around you.Â
âYouâre so perfect, baby, you know that?â She murmurs. âI love you so much.â She kisses you softly, bringing a hand up to stroke your hair.Â
âI love you too,â you mumble in-between kisses. No one has ever made you feel more loved than Agatha.Â
âIâm so proud of you,â she continues and you blush. âI know you had a hard day today, but tomorrow will be better. Youâre so strong. Youâre my perfect girl. I love you.âÂ
And she keeps whispering the sweetest things into your ear, and you drift off to sleep in her arms, feeling like nothing was ever wrong.Â

i wish i didn't have to go to school today so i could curl up in my room and read all your fics like a christmas fic binge :(( but !! i'm so glad that it's FINALLY HERE (i've been waiting for this since june you don't even know)
full fic analysis under cut bc i rambled again :( but i finished reading this and i just. i love it so much??? the idea was so good and it was so well executed i can't imagine a better writer to write minghao this specific way. <33
For a moment, Minghao is simply taken aback by the quiet grace of your entrance, the way the afternoon light seems to favour you.
hell-O what happened to good morning ?? y/n really came into this fic like an ethereal being
"Each flower has its own needs, but with patience, they show their beauty. Much like people, I suppose."
this sentence set the stage for such a beautiful analogy of people being like flowers... also minghao's SO insightful ugh đ©đ©
You respond with that cute grin of yoursđit seems more relaxed now.
aww that's so cute!! love how y/n slowly gets more comfortable w hao âčïžâčïž
the tip of your tongue just barely peeking out in concentration.
people who stick their tongue out the side of their mouth when they concentrate >>> it's such a lovable trait
And flowersđlike peopleđdon't rush.
no why is this the PERFECT fic for hao and his patient, transcending calm????Â
The shift from the warm tones of summer to the cool shades of autumn had arrived, bringing a new, fresh palette for him to play with.
THIS LINE !!
"Not just you, no," Minghao replies amusedly. "But I think you could be. A flower, I mean. You're just someone who's figuring out what kind you want to be."
i love how he doesn't deny comparing people to flowers in general cuz somehow that is exactly what minghao is? like a guy who sometimes is a little on the sidelines simply because he enjoys perceiving other people a bit too much
The question rests upon Minghao's shoulders
NOO THIS SENTENCE đđ absolute poetry how do people even come up with these ??
I've been liking the liĂĄnhuÄ latelyđthe lotus. It grows in muddy water and blooms above the surface, even despite those circumstances. It also represents purity, resilience, and growth."
this is an amazing choice honestly the lotus is soo beautiful & strong (also i like the way lotus roots taste) and it's so minghao!!!
Then he just simply shrugs. "I guess I didn't mind it," he replies lowly, and meets your eyes warily. "Does it bother you?"
if someone said this to me i'd be folding on the spot bro like just confess already??
"I don't mind either," I like being in this place... with you. "Not at all."
rania and her lovely writing style of putting unsaid words in italics in between đ€©đ€© i love how distinctive it makes your writingÂ
Minghao has picked flowers for funerals before. He's also seen people hold onto flowers that are long past their bloom, clinging to them as if their presence alone could bring someone back. He's been there too.
oh GOSH the sorrow? so beautifully portrayed
The question feels a bit silly to ask, and it makes Minghao's features soften as he looks at you, a warmth in his chest that spreads like the first rays of sunlight breaking through a cold morning. "I've already been waiting for you," he says, almost cheekily, and it seems to lighten the moment a little. "I haven't planned on stopping anytime soon."
this fic is my other roman empire (this and moni's "finger trapped (ripped to its seams)")
His arms catch you instinctively, gentle yet steady, embracing around you like flowers petals folding inward for protection. His warmth seeps into you as if he were the sun reaching a flower in the early hours of dawn, and his hand comes up to cradle the back of your head, encouraging you to press closer into his warmth.
this whole paragraph healed me.
Minghao wonders if flowers ever feel the same bittersweet pull when their petals fallđthe ache of letting go, but the quiet hope of something new taking root.
holy shit. this line touched a part of me so raw that i didn't even know existed
caught in bloom, caught on you | xu minghao
SYNOPSIS. in which you find yourself becoming a regularđor perhaps more than thatđat minghao's flower shop. PAIRING. florist!xu minghao x gn!reader GENRE. fluff, a pinch of angst, hurt/comfort, strangers to friends to lovers WARNINGS. hao basically falls in love at first sight HAHA, mild cursing, implied that yn lost someone close to them, a lot of yearning n pining, kissing WORD COUNT. 8.3k
notes: wheeboo is NOT in their short-ish fic era anymore and is in their long-ish fic era rn đ anyway,, i didnt have a title for the fic until hao posted his song on his birthday so... I hope u all enjoy?? this might be one of my faves haha
Minghao likes these kinds of days.
Thin, irregular shapes of cotton drift lazily across the endless blue embrace of the skies. The afternoon sun carries warmth in its hands that he could feel right through the glass windows of his flower shop. It's almost as if the season of summer itself is breathing through his shop, softly encouraging his little garden to reach for the light.
Minghao runs his slender fingers through the cool edges of a hydrangea, its soft petals a deep shade of prismarine.
Ever since he was younger, his mother had told him that flowers weren't just things to be cared for. They were companions, your friends if you'd let them be, each blooming with all different kinds of personalities.
He likes how the flowers didn't ask for much; they simply needed patience and care, and in return, they gave him a sense of peace that he couldn't find anywhere else.
The sudden chime of the bell pulls him from his thoughts. He straightens up, wiping his hands on the apron tied loosely around his waist, and glances toward the door.
The figure the walks through the door is unfamiliar, yet it's easy to catch the way the sunlight highlights the edges of your silhouette, almost like a halo as you step inside the shop. For a moment, Minghao is simply taken aback by the quiet grace of your entrance, the way the afternoon light seems to favour you.
Your gaze circles around the shop, taking in the rows of flowers with a soft curiosity. There's some sort of quiet hesitation in your movements when you take a few more tentative steps inside, as if you're trying to find the right place to be in this space, just as much as you're trying to find the right flower.
Minghao finds himself clearing his throat, drawing a polite smile across his lips and catching your attention right away.
"Good afternoon," he greets calmly. "Can I help you with something today?"
You glance up at him, a slight surprise in your eyes before they soften.
"Hi, um... Yeah, I was actually looking to see if I could buy some flowers. The shop I went to before closed down, so I've been searching for a new place. It was a bit of a drive." Then you hesitate briefly, before continuing, "I'm not sure what to look for exactly, but something for a first date would be nice."
Minghao's heart stirs a bit disappointingly at that, though he quickly suppresses the feeling away. After all, it's just flowers, and you're simply here to buy them for someone else.
He nods thoughtfully, giving a soft, understanding look.
"Ah, well. Congratulations first of all on the date," he says calmly, though the nerves itches his fingers. "A first date is always special, isn't it?"
"They are," You reply sheepishly, and the hint of a blush to your cheeks nearly resembles the colour of the roses displayed near the window.
"Is there a specific kind of vibe you're going for?" Minghao asks. "I can help you pick something that feels right."
You pause for a moment, eyes lingering on a beautifully-painted vase. "Hmm, I think... something romantic, but not too traditional, if that makes sense? Not something too cliché, you know, but I also want it to feel special."
Minghao simply hums in response, his mind sifting through the variety of options he could think of. There's this odd sense of responsibility within him to make your choice is beyond perfect.
"Roses are always a classic," he begins. "but they're quite conventional, so..."
He can sense you following closely to him as he walks toward another part of the shop.
"These are tulips," Minghao explains, gesturing to a row of soft, voluminous blooms in shades of pale pink and coral. "They're not commonly picked like roses, but there's a nice charm about it. They're meant to represent long-lasting love."
You take a good look of the flowers, and you're amazed by how bright they appear.
"Wow, they're so beautiful." Then you take a small glance up at Minghao, before back down at the flowers. "You must really take care of these flowers to make them look this vibrant."
"I try my best," he mutters quietly, watching as you continue to take in their beauty. "Each flower has its own needs, but with patience, they show their beauty. Much like people, I suppose."
Your eyes flicker back up at him, and for a moment, there's a quiet stillness between you, as if the space between you two is holding its breath. Then you let out a warm, somewhat nervous chuckle.
"I think I understand," You say, taking a step closer towards the tulips and carefully running a finger over its petals. "It's about giving them space to grow, right? Not forcing them to be something they're not."
There's something about the way you speak, something thoughtful, almost as if you also understand the language of patience he's grown so accustomed to.
"Exactly." He smiles faintly. "That's what I like about flowersđthey don't rush. They just exist, and somehow, they slowly become what they're meant to be."
You lift your gaze to meet his, and in your eyes, Minghao sees something more than just curiosity. There's a softness there, a sincerity that draws him in. At his sides, he feels his fingers twitch slightly, but he quickly smooths his hands down his apron.
It's strange how a simple conversation about flowers can make him feel so... connected to someone.
"I think these are perfect," You tell him, eyes brightening with confidence.
A wave of satisfaction washes over Minghao, who nods in agreement.
"Would you like me to wrap them up for you?" he asks.
"That would be great, thank you," You respond with that cute grin of yoursđit seems more relaxed now. The thought makes his heart flutter.
Minghao begins to wrap the delicate stems with some brown wrapping paper, carefully arranging them so they're secure. As he ties a ribbon around the bouquet, he can't help but sneak up a glance at you. You're wandering around the shop with your hands clasped in front of you, looking at the other arrangements on display, and he smiles to himself.
He finishes the bouquet and smooths out any remaining creases with his fingertips. When you make your way back over to him, he offers it to you.
"Do you want to write your name on a gift tag?" Minghao asks, holding up a small card and a pen. He doesnât know why his heart's beating fasterđperhaps it's the subtle hopefulness in his voice that will make your name linger longer, even after you leave.
You glance at the pen in his hand, considering it for a moment before nodding.
"Sure, I'd love to," You tell him with a faint smile, snatching the pen from his grasp, giving it a quick click before writing something down, the tip of your tongue just barely peeking out in concentration.
When you finish, you hand the card back to him. He takes it from you carefully, inspecting your neat, intricate handwriting. It's simple, yet there's a certain elegance to it it. Minghao reads it under his breath: For someone special, who I hope feels the same - Y/N.
Y/N, he repeats in his mind.
"I'll finish it up for you now," he says, placing the card with the bouquet. He arranges the flowers once more, making sure everything is perfect before handing it to you.
You find yourself fishing into your bag for your wallet. "How much do I owe you?"
Minghao hesitates for a moment, his fingers hovering over the register, but there's something about the way your features soften and how your eyes meet his that makes him pause.
"It's on the house."
You stop your hands, peering back up at him with a surprised look. "Really? Are you sure?"
"Of course," he assures calmly. "It's the least I can do."
You just blink at him a few times, a soft chuckle escaping your lips.
"Thank you," You let out sheepishly as you take the bouquet in your hands, the ribbon slipping through your fingers as you carefully adjust it. There's a split second that passes where you sneak a glance at the nametag on his chest. "I really appreciate it. I'm sure they'll love them."
Something in his chest tightens at thatđthey'll love them. Minghao tries not to overthink it, tries to ignore the brief twinge of something unsettling in his chest.
But you're smiling, so he smiles back.
"I hope so," he replies gently, and with a polite bow of his head, he adds, "I'm sure they'll appreciate the thought behind it."
As you walk towards the exit, you take a final look around the shop, eyes lingering on the shelves of flowers, before turning back to Minghao.
"I'll be sure to come back," You say brightly, and the way the afternoon sunlight pours down all around you in the doorway makes you appear almost angelic. "Thank you for everything."
"I'll be here," Minghao responds, offering a small, timid wave of his hand. "Take care."
The chime of the bell above the door announces your departure, and a sigh leaves him.
It's just flowers, he tells himself again. Just flowers.
And flowersđlike peopleđdon't rush.
Minghao finds himself wiping away some spilled soil on the counter, the soft hum of piano music drifting throughout the quiet flower shop. He had just gotten done cleaning up after a busy morning of rearranging a few displays around the shop to tie into the slow seasonal changes that were beginning to take shape outside.
The shift from the warm tones of summer to the cool shades of autumn had arrived, bringing a new, fresh palette for him to play with. Chrysanthemums, petunias, dahlias, and marigolds were beginning to make their way into the shop, taking their place next to the peonies and roses that had been so meticulously cared for.
When the last bits of soil are wiped away, Minghao steps back to admire the beauty of the shop around him, he takes in a deep inhale, letting in the earthy scent of the fresh blooms fill his lungs.
After storing away a few extra vases in the backroom, the chime of the door hits his ears, and Minghao finds himself straightening back up to greet whoever had come inside.
When looks up, however, he freezes for a moment. He catches you standing in the doorway, and Minghao has to blink a few times to make sure his mind wasn't playing any tricks on him.
"Hi, again," You're the first to greet this time, and then that grin spreads across your face once again, one that seems all-too familiar.
Minghao leans against the counter. "Back so soon?"
"I was just in the area, couldn't help myself, you know..." You drawl with a playful shrug. "I actually just officially moved into the city just last week, hopefully to be closer for this new job and well... The drive here isn't as long as before."
Minghao smiles softly. It's an unexpected but pleasant surprise for you to admit all that to him, and for some reason, it makes him feel a little lighter.
"That's great," he responds, pushing himself off the counter as he straightens up. "I imagine that must be a relief. How do you like it so far?"
You step further into the shop, your eyes eagerly scanning the new arrangements he's set up.
"It's been great, actually," You say with a relieved look. "Life has been... good, honestly. I think the city suits me. It's different, but in a positive way, and I'm already surrounded by a lot of nice people."
This warm and genuine feeling tugs at Minghao's lips as he listens to you, adjusting the stems of a vase full of a plethora of zinnias.
"I'm assuming that date from before went well then?"
His words makes the smile on your face flicker, and the change is subtle but noticeable enough for Minghao to catch it, even when he's not directly looking at you. You shift your weight between your two feet, and the way you glance around the shop seems almost like you're trying to distract yourself from something.
"The date didn't go well at all, actually."
Minghao's fingertips pause on the cold surface of the vase, brows furrowing in a bit of surprise.
"Oh, I'm so sorry," he apologises gently, regretting for the sudden change in mood. "I didn't mean to bring up anything uncomfortable."
You let out a small, rueful chuckle, shaking your head. "No, no, it's okay. Really."
The air seems to thicken a little. You could only stand and watch for a few long moments as Minghao moves gracefully around, tending to all the flowers with his usual care.
After a long pause, you finally break the silence.
"It was good at first, I think, then it just became... awkward. Like really awkward. I thought I had everything planned outđgood place, nice flowers, all that jazz... but I guess it just didn't click. I think we both kind of felt it." You feel your shoulders deflate in a pit of defeat, a soft sigh escaping your lips as you run a hand through your hair. "I don't know why I just rambled all that. Sorry about that."
Minghao doesn't say anything at first, simply giving you some space, but he feels his heart tighten in his chest. He casts his eyes on you, also unsure why you're telling him this or why it feels important to him, but he knows it's a moment of vulnerabilityđa rare oneđand he wants to handle it with care.
"No need to say sorry," he reaffirms, tone soothing. "Sometimes things don't go as expected, and that's okay. It doesn't mean it wasn't meaningful."
You glance towards him, catching the sincerity dripping down from his words. It catches you by surprise at how almost... comfortable it feels to be open right now, with him. The atmosphere here doesn't demand anything of you.
"As people, we try so hard to make things go right that we forget to just... let them unfold naturally," he says softly, as if thinking aloud. "I think sometimes things don't work out because we're not ready for them yet, or maybe they're not the right kind of flower at the right time. You can spend so much time trying to arrange them, placing them in the perfect spot, hoping they'll just fit⊠but sometimes they don't. And that's okay."
You can't help but quirk a playful lip at that, but you can't resist the way his words appear to tug right at your heartstrings. "Are you comparing me to a flower?"
"Not just you, no," Minghao replies amusedly. "But I think you could be. A flower, I mean. You're just someone who's figuring out what kind you want to be."
The thought about being a flowerđin another life, perhapsđis a bit silly. But you also wonder about other things toođif you're being treated with the same care and attention that Minghao gives to his flowers, or if you're wilting like one that hasn't found the right light yet. And as you gaze around the shop, taking in the beauty of the blooms around you, you find yourself smiling.
"I think I'd like to try and take care of a flower," You announce, determination weaving around your voice and words. "I'm not sure if I'd be good at it, but I'd like to try."
Minghao crosses his arms together, letting out a thoughtful hum while studying you for a few seconds. "I think you'd do well."
For some reason, those few words were enough to send heat crawling up your body and into your face.
"Thank you," You breathe out sheepishly, the corners of your mouth tugging upwards. "Can you give me a few recommendations?"
Minghao just nods. "Sure."
From there, he leads you toward a small display near the front of the shop where a few different pots and seedlings are carefully arranged. He describes a few of them to you. You're immediately drawn to the passion dripping from his tone, and the way he appears to light up when he speaks.
"These might be a good start," he suggests, gesturing to a small seedling. "Marigolds are pretty low maintenance. They need light, of course, but they're easy to grow and care for."
You take a moment to study over the baby plant with sweet curiosity.
"I think I'll start with these, then," You say, glancing back at Minghao. "Something easy."
Minghao's eyes don't stray away from how you admire the tiny plant, how you cradle the pot in your hands to take a closer look at it as if you're already imagining yourself taking care of it.
"Taking care of them can be a good reminder to take care of yourself too," he points out. "They need patience, consistency⊠and a little bit of trust, just like people do."
You look up at him, a smile tugging at your lips once more, feeling something warm bloom in your chest. His words settle into you in a way that's hard to describe, but they feel rightđlike they're exactly what you need to hear.
"That's true," You reply, the weight of the sentiment settling comfortably within you. "I guess I could use a reminder like that."
"Shall I wrap it up for you?" he offers.
"Yes, please. Thank you."
After mulling over some options, he chooses the perfect wrapping paper and adds a small note about caring for marigolds. You watch him, mesmerised by the ease in his movements, the care he pours into something so simple. For a moment, you forget about all the bustling noise outside the shop, and all that exists is Minghao and the flowers, his flowers.
As Minghao ties the final knot around the marigold pot, he hands it to you, and his fingertips briefly brush against yours.
"Thank you," You tell him softly. "For everything, really. It's very calming in here."
Minghao's smile widens, almost like he's heard those same words before, and perhaps he has; maybe many people find themselves drawn to his calm presence and the haven he's created in this little shop.
There's a strange warmth that spreads throughout your chest as you cradle the small plant in your hands. "I'll be sure to take good care of it."
A few moments of comfortable silence pass as you both stand there, your eyes drifting around the shop to take in the palette of autumn that colours the space. Yet it's almost instinctive in the way your gaze finds Minghao.
"I hope you won't mind me coming back, you know... to make sure I'm doing a good job with this little one." You gesture to the plant in your hands, a playful tone to your words.
Minghao chuckles, a sound as gentle as the petals surrounding him. "Of course. I'll be here."
"Do you mind if I take another look around with the place? It looks great, by the way."
"Take all the time you need."
And for the first time in a long while, Minghao felt like he wasn't just waiting for the next flower to bloom.
He was blooming, too.
"Do you have a favourite flower?"
The question rests upon Minghao's shoulders while he waters a cluster of orchids in the back corner of the shop. You're hovering near him, aimlessly trudging your fingertips over, but instead lets the question settle in between the quiet moments.
"I imagine it's hard to pick as a florist, right?" You let out a meek laugh. "It's kind of like asking a painter to pick their favourite colour."
The corners of Minghao's lips curl up slightly, his eyes fixed on the glistening leaves under the faint droplets of water. You can tell he's contemplating the question from the quiet hums leaving his mouth, and for some reason, you find comfort in his patience.
"Not exactly," he says after a pause, his voice steady, thoughtful. "A painter might have a favourite colour, but they don't use it all the time. It's about balance. Knowing when to bring it forward and when to hold it back."
"Ah, so you do have a favourite flower," You tease lightly, nudging him playfully with your shoulder. "You just don't want to admit it."
The brief touch seems to linger in the air, a soft warmth that you both let pass without acknowledging. Minghao gently sets the watering can down and looks at you for a moment, his gaze a little deeper than before.
"In China, we have a lot of flowers that hold meaning," Minghao continues. "It's hard to pick one specifically, but... I've been liking the liĂĄnhuÄ latelyđthe lotus. It grows in muddy water and blooms above the surface, even despite those circumstances. It also represents purity, resilience, and growth."
You tilt your head as you take in his words. You already knew yourself that you didn't know much about flowers, but there's a certain curiosity that washes over you from how Minghao speaks so fondly about them. Even something as simple as a flower has layers of meaning for him.
"That's really beautiful, I..." You trail off, trying to find the right words. "I've always looked at things really surface-level, you know, like I've always found daisies beautiful because they're so simple and bright, but I never really thought much about their deeper meanings. It's kind of like... I never thought about why I liked them. It's just easy to see them and appreciate them, I guess."
Minghao blinks at you, before lowering his gaze down to the floor. "Daisies suit you."
You turn to him, dazed. "Really?"
Minghao takes a contemplative pause. "Well, they're not only... beautiful to look at, but they brighten up any space they're in."
You feel your feet seep into the floor, sinking deeper as your cheeks warm, suddenly hyper-aware of how close you were standing next to him. And it's the way he acts like he didn't fucking say anything out of the ordinary almost makes you lose it.
"Are you flirting with me right now?"
However, Minghao doesn't seem fazed by the question. Instead, his lips twitch into a small, almost imperceptible smile, and then a few seconds later, your phone rings.
Minghao just offers you a little wave of his soil-painted hand. "Have fun at work, Y/N."
"Minghao! Can you teach me how to wrap these flowers?"
Minghao casts his attention up from displaying a new set of hyacinths, catching you behind the counter with a bouquet in your hands, along with a small old lady on the other side with a cheerful grin.
There's a subtle tug at the corners of his mouth when he hears you holler for him again, and he brushes his hands against his apron, before marching his way toward you. He steps up to you, taking the flowers from your hand while you beam happily towards the old lady.
"What's the occasion for the flowers, ma'am?" You ask curiously. Th elderly woman lets out a soft laugh, resting her wrinkled hands on the counter.
"It's for my grandson! He's graduating from high school today. Time flies by, doesn't it?"
"Wow, that's such a milestone! Congratulations to him," You exclaim enthusiastically, softly clapping your hands together as Minghao deftly arranges the flowers within the wrapping paper, before sliding it over to you.
He leans in a bit more, almost too close you feel the way his arm brushes against yours and the way his breath fans against your skin.
"Fold the edges like this," Minghao instructs softly, his hands hovering right over yours. "Make sure the paper covers the stems. Too much pressure could break them; too loose could make them fall apart."
You watch as his hands follow yours while you nervously, yet carefully trace the frail edge of the paper, showing you how to make each fold with a care that's almost tender. His close proximity sends strange flutters to your stomach, but you do your best to ignore it.
"Okay, like this?" You question, pulling the paper slightly tighter around the bouquet.
Minghao hums approvingly, letting you hold the flowers while he circles a ribbon around it with ease. His hands brush against yours as he neatly ties it, and the two of you pull back to watch how it delicately falls over the bouquet.
The old lady glances between the two of you with a knowing smile.
"The two of you make such a cute couple! Do you run the shop together?"
You feel your face fire up at that, cheeks burning with embarrassment. Then you instinctively glance over at Minghao, who surprisingly doesn't seem as flustered as you are.
"Oh, um, we're notđ"
"They like to help out here once in a while," Minghao adds in smoothly, though you aren't sure if that entirely helps or not. However you know what he's saying is true, because whenever your break for work comes or on your free time, you find yourself naturally walking towards the flower shop to help out at times.
The lady just beams up even more, scooping up the bouquet in her grasp. "Well, it's nice to see young faces working together! You two sure do have a lot of chemistry."
You offer a wave of your hand. "I hope your grandson enjoys the flowers. Congratulations to him once again!"
With that, the old woman offers a small wink before turning to head out of the shop. "Thank you, dear! Take care, both of you." Her delighted steps echo off the walls as she exits the shop.
The shop grows quiet again. You let out a sigh, cracking your knuckles as you turn to Minghao, who was already wiping over the surface of the counter, making quick work of putting things back in order, and for some reason, it still doesn't wipe away the pit of awkwardness you're feeling. You wonder if he feels the same too.
"So," Minghao starts, still continuing to clean without batting a glance at you. "You're taking over my shop, it seems."
You let out a haughty scoff. "I just wanted to try wrapping some flowers for someone. Don't let it get to your head."
Minghao only chuckles lightly, though he keeps his focus on the counter, yet you could only focus on him. You can't help but admire the way his hair falls effortlessly over his forehead, the slight endearing tilt of his head as he works, and how his movements are so meticulously unique to only him. There's a certain aura he exudes that makes you feel strangely at peace, a magic that only seems to reside within the walls of the shop.
"Why didn't you say no?" You suddenly ask, the question slipping out before you could shut your mouth.
Minghao pauses mid-swipe, looking back up at you. "Say no to what?"
"To, uh... the lady back there," You stammer, feeling the heat creep back at your neck. "About us, you know... being a couple."
Minghao remains silent as he tosses the dirty wipe away. For a moment, he seems to be contemplating somethingđwhether the question, the idea, or something more.
Then he just simply shrugs. "I guess I didn't mind it," he replies lowly, and meets your eyes warily. "Does it bother you?"
Your mind goes completely blank at his question. Does it bother you? The simple truth is that you didn't expect him to answer so casually. You were expecting him to probably correct her humbly, in all honesty. After all, it was just a passing comment from a lady who didn't mean any harm behind it.
But... does it bother you?
"No, it... it doesn't bother me. Really," You respond after a pause, voice coming out a bit forced. Your heart is beating super fast right now. "I guess I just didn't expect you to go along with it since we're notđ"
"đnot a couple," Minghao finishes for you. "I know."
You feel like you're melting into a pile of goo, your thoughts scattering like ants running out of their pile.
"I'm sorry, I'm overthinking," You mumble out, trying to brush everything off with an airy laugh.
Minghao shakes his head. "I should be sorry. I made you uncomfortable."
"You-You didn't, trust me!" You wave your hands dismissively, albeit a bit dramatic. "I was just caught off-guard and didn't know how to respond."
This seems to relax Minghao's shoulders a bit, but not entirely.
"Okay," he says, and his voice is as light as a wisp getting caught in the wind. "But you'd tell me if you were uncomfortable, right?"
You give him an easy nod, maybe even confident. "I would. I promise. And you'd... tell me too?"
Minghao meets your eyes with a steady gaze, his expression soft but thoughtful. For a moment, there's a subtle shift in the air, and you can feel the weight of his words before he speaks again.
"Yeah," he answers firmly, sincerely. "I would."
When you open your mouth to speak again, your phone dings in your pocket. You squint your eyes to read over the message in your notifications, before closing up your phone.
"My meeting got cancelled." Then you blink up towards Minghao, as if trying to convey an unspoken question to him.
As if the answer wasn't already obvious, Minghao gives you a small, almost teasing smile.
"I don't mind the company," he tells you, then quirks up a brow. "Unless you do."
"I don't mind either," I like being in this place... with you. "Not at all."
Flowers bloom when the time is right. And you don't mind waiting for it.
When a flower dies, there's a certain routine that comes after it. Trim away the wilted petals, dispose of the stems, recycle them as compost, and plant the next set of blooms.
Minghao hates seeing flowers die.
The sound of crumbling petals tie a knot in his chest, the stillness that follows afterwards is almost deafening. But he knows it's an inevitable part of life. Every flower has its chance to bloom and thrive, and eventually, it will fade.
The flowers don't belong to him, after allđthey are simply passing through his care briefly before going to someone else or withering away, like everything else in life. Minghao knows it's unnecessary to hold onto these flowers so tightly, but after being surrounded by them his entire life, it's merely impossible to let go.
The bell chimes as he's composting a few camellias that had sadly wilted, and he gazes up to find a gust of snow following your footsteps as you step inside. A large, black fluffy coat hugs your body and a scarf is wrapped snugly around your neck. However this time, Minghao doesn't notice any ounce of a smile to your face.
He sets the compost bin down and wipes his hands on his apron.
"Y/N?"
There's a very subtle twitch to your expression when he calls out your name.
"Hey," You croak out, voice a bit strained. "Um... is it fine if I buy some flowers?"
Minghao feels something in his chest clench at your tone, but he pushes the feeling away with his usual calm composure, masking away any concern simmering on the surface.
"Sure," he replies, focusing on the shadows that plague over your features. "Is there anything specific you're looking for?"
Your eyes drift away from to look around the flower shop, taking note of the bright, usual blooms that surround you, yet none of them appear are what you're looking for.
"Do you have, um..." You feel like you're already going to regret this. "...anything for a funeral?"
The words float in the air between you both. Minghao's expression falters for just a moment, the calmness that he usually carries slipping as his eyes soften toward you.
"Of course," he says softly. "I have a few options."
With that, he leads you to a particular spot in the shop, where it houses all sorts of flowers with muted coloursđwhite roses and lilies, pale chrysanthemums, and pink and purple orchids all arranged neatly. Minghao watches as you gaze over each flower, but he doesn't speak yet, simply allowing you the moment to breathe.
"These are the traditional flowers for a funeral," he explains finally. "White roses for remembrance, lilies for peace, chrysanthemums for mourning, and orchids for everlasting love."
Minghao has picked flowers for funerals before. He's also seen people hold onto flowers that are long past their bloom, clinging to them as if their presence alone could bring someone back. He's been there too.
It's bit a different when it's you though, and he doesn't exactly know how to explain it.
You plod slowly throughout the display, picking up a stem here and there, but each time, you set it back down as if it didn't feel right. But when you come across the orchids, you linger a little longer on them, tenderly caressing the petals as if you were scared to break them.
"I think I'll choose these ones. The orchids," You murmur, picking up a few stems and showing it to him.
Minghao just nods, taking the ones from your hands and grabbing a few more to finish the rest of the bouquet, moving with careful precision.
"I'll handle the rest, don't worry," he assures you as he gracefully works to arrange the orchids.
None of you choose to say anything more, only letting the diffident silence stretch. For some reason, the shop feels a little more cooler, the air heavier than usual. The only sound is the rustling of Minghao's hands moving carefully over the flowers, the quiet snap of a stem as he trims it with his shears. Outside, the snow continues to fall.
Minghao doesn't press for any details, yet even in the quiet, you have a feeling that he knows. Maybe that's why he's just letting his hands speak for him.
"Here you go." He offers you a neat bouquet of pale lavender orchids.
You step up to him to retrieve it from his grasp, bringing it close to your chest. "Thank you."
Minghao knows he shouldn't let his feelings get in the way, but as he takes note of the slight glassiness to your eyes and small tremble of your hands holding the bouquet, he isn't sure how much longer he can hold it in. He feels guilty when he lets his eyes drift down to your lips for a second, before averting it back up quickly.
The smile you give him is nothing short of fragile, faint, but it's there. And then, with a sudden leap, you find yourself leaning into Minghao's embrace without thinking, wrapping your arms around his body as if he was the only thing in the world that was preventing you from falling down. And in a way, he is.
You don't cryđnot entirely. A single tear slips past your lashes, landing silently against his shoulder. He feels it, but he doesn't move, doesn't say anything, and just lets you... be.
"I'm sorry," You mumble into his shoulder. "I didn't mean tođ"
"Don't be," Minghao interrupts softly. "It's okay."
You pull away for a moment to look up at him. He's still holding you. His hands have fallen down to your sides, resting there as if he's held you like this before. The way you're looking at him has Minghao nearly forgetting how to breathe; it nearly urges to him to lean down and close the distance between the two of you.
His gaze lingers on your lips, and for a split second, Minghao almost allows himself to follow the instinct to lean in.
But then he stops himself.
He's not sure what this is, what the right thing to do is. His thoughts are tangled mess of rootsđhe's always been careful with holding himself back, with promising to wait, yet something about the way you look at him makes it feel like the only right thing to do is to give in.
But he can't. Not yet. Not when you're so fragile and baring yourself raw to him.
Yet he sees the way your eyes flutter at him, the way a crease of question forms in between your brows as if you're also unsure of what this moment is, but there's a longing there too. It's almost pleading. And you lean in a little more towards him.
"Y/N," he breathes out your name, and it's the first time you ever heard his voice shake like that. "We... We shouldn't."
You don't say anything at first, your eyes searching his face like you're trying to read something. You open your mouth, close it, and then, with a slight exhale, you step back, only a little, but enough to let the cool air seep in between you.
"I'm sorry, I..." You squeeze your eyes shut for a moment, letting out a sniffle. "Fuck, I'm sorry..."
Minghao feels his chest tighten. "It's okayđ"
"I-I just wanted to feel something for a moment, you know? Everything is such a mess right now and the first person I thought of was you, because I like... the way you make me feel. I like it way more than I should. And that... that it's okay if you don't feel that way too."
Minghao's heart stutters at that, and perhaps the world even pauses too. All words that want to leave him become stuck in his throat, because he knows deep downđfrom as far back as the moment you walked into the flower shopđthat he's felt the same way for far too long.
So, he settles with taking one hand from your side and slowly reaching up to trace your warm cheek with his thumb, his touch delicate as if he's afraid he might cause your petals to fall down. He brushes away a lingering tear that had been drying up on your skin and lets his hand stay there.
"You... deserve way more than just comfort in a moment like this," Minghao starts quietly. "But you're grieving right now, and I don't want to take advantage of that. I don't want to just be someone who's here for a moment, because... you mean so much to me more than that."
Your lips form into a tight, thin line, and you flicker your gaze towards the floor, the heaviness in the air still weighing down on your shoulders.
"Minghao..."
"And if I act on what I feel, it wouldn't be fair to you," Minghao continues, voice trembling slightly as he speaks. "I want it to be because you know what you want. And if you ever give me that chance, I promise I'll be here for you. Not just now, not just in this moment, but... for everything. When you're ready; when you're healed; when it feels right, I'll be heređI always have been."
There's a lump in your throat that you swallow down. For a while, you could only simply stand there, feeling as if you're teetering on the edge of something you can't quite reach. But even as you stand in this stillness, there's something in his words that echoes off the walls of your mindđit's understanding, and it's care, and it feels like a promise.
"I... I know. I just... I'm sorry for putting all this on you. I think I need space to... heal and think." Then you look back up at him, wonder tainting your features. "Will you wait for me?"
The chuckle that leaves you isn't forced; in fact, it's quite relieving. It feels like the start of something, and Minghao feels a flicker of hope at the sound.
You reluctantly separate yourself away from him, cradling the bouquet of orchids to your chest, and let out an exhale you hardly realise you were holding in.
"I'll be okay, you know," You tell him, even if it's a bit of lie, or half the truth. You can't tell which.
Minghao glances down to your hands, as if you're holding a piece of your heart wrapped up within the petals, before back up to your eyes.
"I know," is all he says.
The world doesn't stop for grief, but it's okay to pause for a little while.
Minghao wonders if flowers ever feel the same bittersweet pull when their petals fallđthe ache of letting go, but the quiet hope of something new taking root.
You haven't stepped foot in the flower shop in a while. At least, not as often as you used to come.
The absence is especially daunting, and Minghao can't help but feel it every time the bell chimes and it isn't you that walks through the door. On rare occasion you'd swing by to say hello during your breaks at work and sometimes, a pretty, shy smile from you before you disappear back into the world outside.
It's strange how easily your presence had come to be a part of the rhythm of his days. He used to wonder how someone like you would be drawn to the boring stillness of a flower shop. But now the place feels more emptier than before you came into his life, the petals around him somehow less vibrant, the air colder, even when the sun streams through the windows.
He tries not to dwell on it, but he can't help the nagging feeling that maybe you've drifted away, maybe things have changed. Maybe he was just a moment for you. And now, that moment has passed.
So he simply spends his days in the shop, moving between shelves of blossoms and arranging bouquets, but his thoughts always return to you. To the quiet moments when your voice would fill the space between the flowers, to the way you cared and tended the blooms even when you had no reason to.
It makes him think that if flowers could speak for us, then what might they say about you? Would they say you were someone who saw beauty in the smallest things? Minghao often found himself wishing that flowers could speak just so he can hear what they would say about you.
But flowers don't speak, of course. They just bloom and stretch toward the light, growing in places where they are tended to, and even in those that have been forgotten.
Maybe that's what Minghao wasđa forgotten flower of his own waiting to be seen, to be noticed.
Luckily, he was able to distract himself a bit today with a few deliveries for a couple of upcoming weddings and a new arrangement for the store he was preparing to do in the next few days, along with piles of orders for days. But it still wasn't enough.
As he flips the sign on the window to display Closed, he fumbles for his keys to lock the door. However, the sound of the bell rings through the shop, stopping him mid-motion. Minghao lifts a brow up, not expecting for anyone to show up right as he's about to close up.
And when he looks up, he freezes.
"I'm not late, aren't I?"
It's you.
The way your voice comes out all shaky like you're out of breath, yet soft has Minghao feeling as if he's sinking into quicksand. The sight of you standing at the doorway is a dream he never dares to wake up from.
"You're not," Minghao manages to say, somehow. "You're just in time."
Your lips tug into a small, relieved smile, and it's enough to make the air feel lighter in the shop. You take a few hesitant steps so that you're fully inside, letting the door shut behind you with a faint click.
Your lips tug into a small, relieved smile, and it's enough to make the air feel lighter in the shop. You take a few hesitant steps so that you're fully inside, letting the door shut behind you with a faint click. You take in the familiar, fresh scent of all the blooms and greenery around you, and it hits you in the heart just how much you've missed this place.
"I had, uh⊠a late shift at work," You explain unsurely. "so I thought about stopping by, but I wasn't sure if you'd still be here."
Minghao just shakes his head, watching as you brush your fingertips over some lilies and baby's breaths that were displayed on a small table near the window. Gosh, he'd do anything to flat out say how much he missed you, how much he'd been thinking about you, but he doesn't.
"Have you been busy?" You ask him.
"A little," he responds. "but manageable, I would say."
"Ah⊠that's good," You mumble, voice trailing off as you start to make your way in his direction, catching eye on a particular bouquet sitting on the counter behind him. "No-show again?"
Minghao lets out a sigh, and he feels you following behind as he walks towards the counter. He picks up the bouquet in his hand, letting his gaze fall over it.
"Mhm," he hums. "But it's alright, really. Happens more often than you think."
You quirk a brow as your eyes roam over the bouquet, and a particular, almost knowing look stretches across your lips.
"That's funny," You huff, taking the bouquet from his grasp. It held a colourful variety of hydrangeas. "It looks a lot like an order I placed a few days ago."
Minghao's heart skips a beat as he watches you carefully examine the bouquet, his breath caught in his throat.
"This⊠was yours?" he questions in surprise.
"Yeah, IâŠ" You bite your lips sheepishly. "It was sort of an impulsive thing, I guess."
Minghao only continues to watch as you admire the bouquet, caressing over the delicate wrapping paper and the all-too familiar bow that he would tie all of his other arrangements.
"Impulsive, huh?" Minghao teases lightly, a hint of a smile playing at his lips. "Well, you certainly picked a good one."
You look up at him, a small, tentative smile forming on your face. "I guess I just wanted to get something special. For someone."
Minghao feels his heart sink at that, a flutter of hope and uncertainty colliding in his chest. Someone.
He opens his mouth to say something, but the words get caught in his throat, unsure if it's his place to ask, or if he even wants to hear the answer.
"I see," he says instead, trying to keep his tone relaxed, though there's a hint of sadness to his voice that he silently hopes you don't notice.
You take note of his unreadable expression, over the way his eyes appear downcast and a subtle tension to his posture.
However, this doesn't make you stop from gripping the bouquet tighter in your grasp, and then in the next moment, you're stepping closer and offering it over to him.
"I hope you like them," You state, holding out the bouquet thing as if was the most natural thing in the world.
Minghao glances at the bouquet quizzically, the same one he had just been holding, then back at you. His face shifts between a million different expressionsđconfusion, surprise, hope, and everything in betweenđbefore the tension in his chest eases just slightly as he finally registers what you're doing.
He's a florist, for crying out loud. He's usually the one to be giving flowers to people. Never in his years of practically living in the shop has anyone offered flowers to him. The gesture is practically foreign, yet in this moment, it feels so right.
His fingers graze against yours as he hesitantly takes it from your hands, but you fully let go. Instead, you cover his hand with yours, warmth spreading between you as you gently press your palm against his. His heart is beating in his throat, in his ears, everywhere in his body, and he wonders if you can feel it too.
"I missed you," You declare softly, yet a pinch of urgency behind your words. "I missed you so fucking much."
His chest tightens, and it's as if the weight of everything crushes him in the best possible way. All the time he had spent wondering if you had forgotten about him, if maybe you had moved on, it all melts away in an instant. Because you're here. And you're saying everything he's been craving to hear.
And gosh, does he want to kiss you right now.
This time, Minghao doesn't waste a second. He brings a hand up to cradle the side of your neck as he presses his lips to yours. It's perhaps a bit desperate first, making him swallow down a faint sigh you let out but it quickly settles into something softer, deeper, like two people who've been waiting for this moment for far too long.
He can feel the slight tremble in your breath as your lips move against his, and he pulls back slightly, just to make sure you were still with him.
Minghao lets his thumb lightly caress over your cheek as if trying to memorise the feeling of your skin under his touch, as if he'd been starved for this closeness.
"I missed you too," he whispers, a breath away from your lips. "The flowers did too."
A light, airy chuckle escapes from you. "Oh, did they?"
"Of course," Minghao murmurs, his lips curling upwards against your skin. "They've been waiting for you to come back."
"Well, I better not keep them waiting anymore then, right?" You jest playfully, leaning in back once again.
Minghao doesn't hesitate to meet you halfway. "Nope," he says firmly against your mouth. "I think they've waited long enough."

Genuinely spending 2 hours a day just prepping the fiber, RIP
To be fair at least a third of that time is pushing the executive function button so I can start the next nest. They're unfortunately one of those activities that has enough steps that each one feels like it's own separate thing, so I have to Start Task each damn time. So there's a 5-10 minute cooldown between them.
Got 9 nests, I think (on top), middle is some fleece that's already had a lot of locks picked out so it's kind of jumbled, bottom is combing waste.
#That's how all fiber prep is for me... I bet if I was actually medicated it'd go faster#but what can you do.#anyway ive done similar things. 2021 tdf i was carding rolags as i went#but those are so much faster !!! like 2 minutes at most and usually closer to 30 seconds for a rolag that takes#around the same amount of time to spin as a nest of top#meanwhile the nests are 10 minutes each IF i have already picked the locks. which ive started doing bc it feels a little faster#and earlier this year i was spending an hour to an hour and a half before work every day combing southdown babydoll for sock yarn#but i was also spinning that up on supported spindles (i spin 3x slower on those than on my wheel) and over the course#of like a 10+ hour shift#so it felt a lot more reasonable#im combing more of this shetland per day than i was the southdown for sure#but yeah it spins up so much faster that its like. whole morning: combing#tiny but nice part of afternoon: actually spinning the top#idk a ton about how ancient people prepared their wool... definitely need to find some info bc it would be fascinating to know#but carding cloth is a pretty recent development in the grand scale of how long humans have kept sheep#so.... yeah i can imagine youd need like 4 kids combing the wool just to keep up with one experienced spinner#or else that one spinner is spending all damn morning prepping wool#its not a great nighttime activity bc if you cant see real well then your prep really suffers#easier to spin in the near dark than prep in the near dark by a long shot#idk ! cool to think about#im rly intruiged by sally pointers video on that blackthorn hand hackle thing (i cant remember the name RIP)#feels like it could comb wool too ? or at least you could try and then make something better when that failed#but a comb of some kind is just gonna be the easiest thing to make if nothing else ...#palm comb#tour de fleece#tour de fleece 2023#wool prep

I love having no idea whatâs going on. Like this is fine actually. I donât mind this
#induction for my new job starts on monday and most of it is online but i donât know whether they want me to go there physically (to do the#induction stuff on a work laptop in the staff room) or if i can do it at home#i mean either way; i need to go in at some point to pick up my laptop and ID badge and meet my colleagues#and the departmental induction and a lot of the mandatory training is on campus and in person#itâs really just the nonspecific induction stuff that all staff need to go through thatâs online#and in the email that HR sent me with the itinerary and stuff; they said my manager would be in touch to let me know whether they want me#to go physically to campus or to do the online induction at home. and they should also set up a time to meet me to do the departmental#induction and get me my ID and stuff since i canât physically get into the building without another employee#well i havenât heard from them and induction starts at 9:30 on monday. should i just assume if i havenât heard anything that i can just do#everything online and wait for them to contact me to set up a meeting some time in the week?#i donât know who exactly my manager is. if i did then i could search for them on teams#but three people interviewed me and as far as i could tell two of them have the exact same job. one of them is taking over from the other#i think; but i have no idea which is which#i just donât want to get in trouble for doing the induction at home if it turns out they want me on campus#i mean i donât think they can realistically get mad at me for something i didnât know they wanted me to do? like i need to arrange travel#i take public transport. if you want me there you need to let me know so i can book a ticket#otherwise i will stay at home and do the online induction using my fully functioning laptop. likeâŠ#the campus will be closed at 5. i doubt anyone will contact me over the weekend. or early enough monday morning for me to get a train#that would arrive by 9:30. iâm just going to do the induction stuff on monday at home#if no one contacts me by like tuesday afternoon when the departmental induction is supposed to take place and iâm supposed to meet#my manager; i might just reach out to HR. just like âhey i havenât heard from anyone in my department; can you just confirm with them#that they know iâm starting and theyâre ready for me to go in and get set up? thanksâ and leave them to it#itâll be fine. i think#personal

iâll drive, iâll drive all night
bf!rafe cameron x fem!reader
cw â alcohol, brief talks abt arguing, this is lowk short
summary â you drunk call rafe for a ride home from your friends house.
a/n â whipped this up in a few minutes so please donât be too harsh. request!!
do not copy or post my work anywhere else.
you sat outside with the warm breeze as you waited on the steps to your best friends house for your boyfriend to pick you up. you were completely out of it, eyes feeling heavy, body all soft and feeling like jelly from the copious amounts of alcohol coursing through you.
youâd probably had one too many drinks and you were expecting a lecture from rafe when he arrived but you were too far past the point of caring. you just wanted to see him and go home after the terrible day youâd had.
the two of you had argued earlier in the afternoon which eventually led to you both parting ways and not speaking for a few hours. you were both very opinionated and you had attitudes that often didnât mix well when you were frustrated. one of you usually apologized though and you guys moved past it.
this one was different though. you knew youâd been a little mean in your replies but you also felt like he deserved a little reality check. you currently couldnât even remember why you were arguing due to your drunken state, but you knew it was something you guys could easily get over. you two would probably forget about it by morning anyway.
when you finally saw the big truck pull into the driveway, you quickly stood and almost immediately regretted the sudden action. your head began to spin and a pain accumulated behind your eyelids as you drunkenly stumbled to his car. he was standing on the passengers side waiting for you.
once you approached after tripping over your own feet, he opened up the door for you without a word and helped you up the big step to get inside. he shut it behind you and made his way into his own seat. he assured you had your seatbelt on and began reversing out of the driveway without a word.
âiâm sorry,â you slurred quietly, noticing the way both his hands held the steering wheel instead of one of them resting on your thigh. âdidnât know who else to call.â
you heard him sigh and begin to drive. âwould rather you call me than anyone else,â he admitted honestly and spared a glance in your direction. his heart broke a little at the soft pout on your lips and the sad glint in your eyes. âând iâm not mad at you, baby. âs fine.â
your eyes glistened with tears as you looked at him. âyouâre not?â you mumbled under your breath, eyes feeling heavier and your head getting all foggy.
he shook his head with a shrug and gently rested his hand on your lower thigh just above your knee, thumb soothing over your skin reassuringly. âcould never be mad at you,â he said before the car fell into a comfortable silence. the only sound being the quiet song playing on his radio.
you didnât know when you fell asleep or how long itâd been since, but you began to wake to the sight of rafe standing in front of you looking extremely focused and a soft towel being dragged carefully over your cheeks. you were sat on the bathroom counter with your legs spread slightly and him standing between them with majority of your body weight leaning against his.
he was holding your jaw in one hand while the other hand did what you assumed was taking off your makeup. when you finally fluttered your eyes open for real this time, he scanned your face and placed the towel down on the counter. âyou have fun tonight?â
you nodded and smiled softly. âmhm. morganâs friends are really nice. the bar was so cool,â you replied, awkwardly rubbing your hands along your thighs not knowing whether or not it was appropriate to touch him. ââm really sorry, rafe.â
he went silent for a moment but his eyes stayed fixed on yours. âits okay, sweetheart. we both said some shit we shouldnât have. âs alright. people make mistakes.â
âi was beinâ a bitch earlier,â you mumbled, leaning your forehead against his chest.
he laughed softly and smoothed a hand down the back of your head comfortingly. âi think i can handle your attitude pretty well by now,â he replied just barely above a whisper. âcâmon. time for bed.â
you instinctively wrapped your arms around his neck as his hands found the backs of your thighs, lifting you and walking you to your shared bedroom before dropping you down gently on your side. he was quick to pull his shirt over his head and crawl under the covers beside you.
you scooted closer to his side and sighed at the familiar warmth you enjoyed so much. his arm loosely fell to the dip of your waist as he scrolled through netflix to find a movie on, knowing you couldnât sleep without the tv on. âi love you baby,â you muttered through a sleep-laced voice.
he smiled and pressed a kiss to your hair. âi love you more, angel.â

It doesn't take long to settle into the rhythm of your new summer job. Or: the babysitter x single dad au
Part 2 | masterlist
-
Sweat beads on your brow as summer approaches its zenith. Its hottest point. You splurge on an iced caramel latte from the gas station on the way over and pick one up for John as well. Your arm is already stretched out when he opens the front door to let you in, offering it to him.Â
âI, uhâŠthought you might want one as well,â you explain, stuttering through your words. Crumbling under his amused expression.Â
You crave it though. His approval. That fond smile that seems reserved especially for you. The rare murmured good girl, his hand sometimes coming down to ruffle your hair. Even the memory of it makes your breath get lodged in your throat. You covet every crumb of it.
He takes the iced latte from you though before heading out for the day. Gift received. Even squeezes your shoulder in thanks before he shuts the door behind him, and you manage to keep from swooning until you hear his car pull out of the driveway.Â
You stand by the window with the baby pressed to your chest for so little that you canât blame when a little fist tugs at your hair.Â
âSorry, lovie,â you whisper into his fuzzy hair. Inhale deeply.Â
Itâs not as though youâre starved for things to do. Were Johnâs son a few years older, you might have your work cut out for you, but thereâs still plenty to do around the house even when you put the baby down for his morning nap. You save the vacuuming for when baby is awake and youâre not in danger of hearing him suddenly start crying through the baby monitor, but you dust and fold laundry and start the dishwasher and take the recycling out and by the time the baby is ready for lunch, youâve already broken a light sweat.Â
Let no one tell you that babysitting is a walk in the park.
That being said, you do put the baby in his stroller for a walk in the park after lunch.Â
The park isnât terribly far from Johnâs house, so coupled with the short path around the park and the walk back, youâll get a good amount of steps in today without risking the baby being late for his mid afternoon nap.Â
Itâs hard to not have an accidental, forbidden thought. Something like I wonder if anyone thinks Iâm the babyâs mom when you push the stroller past a group of moms gathered together near the jungle gym, their kids sprinting on wobbly legs and climbing like dexterous little wildlings.Â
Those thoughts are dangerous though, best kept under wraps. Clandestine. Because once you start having those thoughts, they never really go away; they just get relegated to a part of your brain that switches on when the lights go off and you think about what it must have been like to carry a baby in your stomach for nine months.Â
Youâre in danger, girl, a small voice in your head warns you. Itâs hard to hear her clearly these days.Â
John comes earlier for once, around midday. It takes you by surprise. You jump when the door opens, the sound ricocheting off the walls like a gunshot and, in that same second, a wave of terror and rage washes over you, your heart already racing at the thought of someone breaking in while itâs just you and the baby home. You spring to your feet, hands already trembling by your sides, and then his familiar shape walks into the room, boots still on and all.
He pauses when he sees your shoulders slump with relief.Â
âSorry,â you breathe, heart still racing. âI thought you wereâŠâ Your voice trails off towards the end because you donât know how to say it without sounding silly.Â
His eyes cut to the baby in the bouncy chair behind you, your body still stood protectively in front of him, and then they soften.Â
âNo, thatâs on meâshouldâve given you a ring before I left,â he says, a light apology in his voice. He throws his keys into the bowl in the foyer before stalking towards you. You stare up at him wide eyed, only blinking when he ruffles your hair before bypassing you to go pick up his son.Â
âHowâs my baby?â he asks, pressing a kiss to the babyâs milksoft cheek, and your heart spins and cartwheels in your chest. All sorts of tricks that keep you rooted in place, unable to manage a single word. âYou been good today?â
Iâve been good, you almost croak out, the words on the tip of your tongue. You swallow. Force them back down. Youâre not his baby.Â
Another dinner invitation that you canât turn down. Not because it wouldnât be polite but because you couldnât muster up the will to refuse even if you really did have plans. Lucky that you donât.Â
When he puts the baby down to sleep for the night, you linger by the door, sure youâre a platitude or two away from being shown out for the night. John calls your name from the kitchen though, drawing you deeper into the house again.Â
âGo put something on,â he instructs when you idle under the archway of the door. With his back to you, you canât make out the expression on his face, leaving you no choice but to gawp at the undulation of his shoulder muscles as he washes out the dishes before stacking them in the dishwasher. âYou want something to drink?â
âJust, uhââ you rasp, clearing your throat. âJust juice, thanks.â
You canât settle on anything to stream, nothing perking your interests; or maybe youâre just too antsy to make an informed decision on what to watch right now.Â
There are other things to worry about. Like John moving around in the other room or the way your denim shorts ride up when you sit down, bunching up at the crotch. You make an attempt to lift your hips and pull them back down as much as you can, but you panic and abort your plan when John comes into the room, embarrassed at the thought of being caught readjusting yourself.Â
The cushion under you bounces slightly when John drops himself down onto the couch beside you, the motion making your shorts ride up even more. You wince when the seam presses tight against your clit, on the edge of mildly painful and turning you on.Â
âHere, sweetheart,â he says, putting his own drink down on the coffee table before handing you your glass of juice.Â
âThanks,â you bleat, taking a sip almost instantly to mask the look on your face, afraid heâll read the panic there and press for details.Â
He sits closer than usual, as he always does these days. Itâs not something you ever discuss. It just seems to happen. Slowly, like ice sheets drifting over water. One day youâre sitting on opposite sides of the couch and the next heâs all up in your space, thigh to thigh with you while the living room goes dark and the TV glows, the reflection throbbing against the glass. An ever-flickering light that illuminates the side of his head when you peer up at him.
Your tongue rests against the roof of her mouth, dry; sparing.
With his arm resting on the back of the couch over your shoulder, the scent of him is almost smothering. Each inhale makes your head spin. If you were to tilt your head to the side, youâd be level with his armpit, his scent strongest there, and that thought spins in your head like a merry-go-round until someone in the movie youâre supposed to be watching shouts, dragging your attention back to it.Â
âChrist, these are little, huh?â John grunts, suddenly reaching over to pinch the frayed ends of your shorts between his fingers. âThis what the kids these days are wearing?âÂ
You donât know how to respond to that. Your bodyâs so hot that you feel like youâre swimming in heat, sweat prickling at your hairline and on the back of your neck.Â
âI-itâs hot out,â you stutter, your whole body suddenly hot. With how high your shorts have ridden up, his fingers are precariously close to your core, just a hairsbreadth from skimming up your inner thigh and brushing against your folds, now plump and sensitive.Â
You wonder if he can make out the outline of your pussy from underneath your shorts. They hug into the seam of your legs, pinching the skin of your inner thighs. You donât dare glance down.Â
He hums, pulling his hand away and you stare wide eyed at the television in front of you when you shift and the glide between your legs tells you just how wet you are. Sitting on the couch next to your boss twice your age with a wet pussy.Â
You lean forward to try and readjust, masking the movement by reaching blindly for your glass on the coffee table at the same time. You must pick up the wrong glass by accident though because when you go to lift it to your lips, Johnâs hand stops you, fingers curling around yours and easily tugging the glass away from your mouth.Â
âNo, baby, thatâs mine; bit young for a drink, arenât you?â John chuckles, eyes squinting with his smile.Â
âIâm legal,â you frown, pouting.Â
He acts like that sometimes; like he doesnât keep track of how old you are.Â
âAll right, but only a sip, got it?â he cautions, handing you the glass.Â
You donât know why you take it. You wouldâve been better admitting to your mistake and putting the glass back down.Â
He chuckles when you wince on your sip, nearly spitting it up. Horrifically embarrassing because itâs not like youâve never had a drink before. Youâve gone out for drinks plenty of times with friends.Â
âYeah,â he rasps, taking the glass from you and flicking his knuckle against your bottom lip as he does. âThatâs what I thought.â
And it happens again and again. Head resting on his shoulder when you drift off on the couch before he shakes you awake. In the grocery store, he comes up behind you while youâre pushing the cart and puts his arms around to steer you down another aisle, his broad chest pressed against your back.Â
You hold your tongue. Bite off and chew the words. Because itâs nothing; itâs innocent. Youâve known from the get-go that John is more of a man of action than words. If anything, youâre the one reading too much into things. Little touch-starved girl from the bad side of town. Itâs not his fault that you preen when he praises you; that you bunt your head against his hand when he ruffles your hair. Every drop of affection soaked up, savoured. Nourishing your heart and your soul. So lonely, so wanting. All those years holed up on your own, no warm body in the bed beside you.Â
Then John Price waltzed in and you expected to keep everything sealed up tight in your chest.
So itâs no wonder you gorge yourself on his touch and hope he doesnât notice the way you lean into it. The rabbit-quick beat of your heart. Your want simmering under your skin, a disgusting, base thing desperate for gentleness.Â
You wonder if he sees the same thing when he looks at you.
In the heat of summer, John invites you to join him and the baby for a weekend at the beach in Portugal.
You only say yes because itâs the dog days of summer. At the beach, thereâll be umbrellas to sit under and beer coolers of cold drinks and the ice cold Atlantic to swim in. Plus, youâve had little opportunity in your life to travelâyouâve barely stepped foot in France, never mind Portugal. But John has friends with a house in the Algarve that have graciously offered him the week, so who are you to say no to such a thoughtful gesture?Â
The only reason you consider not going is because you canât shake the sense of foreboding.Â
âBaby, can you get my back?â John asks when you arrive at the beach the first day of your trip, and when you turn back to him, you have to act quick to catch the sunscreen lobbed your way.Â
Thatâs how you find yourself kneeling in the sand behind him, rubbing sunscreen on his back. His shoulders flex under your hands, and you can feel the muscle bunching and relaxing with each swipe across his shoulder blades. The worst is when you get to his low back. Johnâs groans are obscenely loud, guttural rumblings from the back of his throat. Ravenous.Â
âOkay, thatâs everything,â you chirp, rubbing the excess off on your thighs.Â
âGood,â John says, twisting around. âNow itâs your turn.â
Your eyes widen.
âWaitâI donât need toââ
You donât know quite how he manages it, but a couple minutes later, you find yourself lying flat on your stomach on your beach towel, John squirting a good amount of sunscreen onto the middle of your back. All you get as a warning is the sunscreen bottle tossed to the ground beside your head before two big hands come down to your back to massage the cream into your skin.Â
Thereâs nowhere for you to go when John throws a leg over your hips to straddle you. He holds the majority of his weight off you, but despite his best efforts, you can still feel his dick against your ass, his loose swim shorts doing nothing to hold him in place.Â
He doesnât ask for permission before undoing the knot holding your bikini top together, one quick pull and then the garment loosens around your chest. You can feel the fabric pool around you on the towel.Â
âJohn, youââ you start, almost coming up onto your elbows before realizing that your top wonât be coming with you if you do.Â
âJust gotta make sure I get your whole back, baby,â he reassures you, both hands gliding up your back to curve around your shoulders before dragging back down. âWonât be more than a minute.â
Itâs no use calling him out on the lie because thereâs nothing you could do even if you did.
With hands as big as his, his fingers canât help brushing the sides of your tits every time he smooths his hands down your back. You bite your lip nearly raw to keep from letting your moans escape, toes curling in the sand underneath you and thank god John is facing the other way or else your arousal would be clear as day to him. The gusset of your bathing suit is already damp and you havenât even gotten in the water yet.Â
His hands drag up and down your back, lathering the lotion into your skin, massaging it into the muscle. Each pass of his hands making your eyes roll back, breath coming out in choppy pants. Tweaking when the palms of his hands easily encompass your shoulders, nearly tickling under your arms.
âThere we go. All done,â he announces, jolting you out of the lustful fog youâd slipped into during his ministrations.Â
âAll good?â you ask, a touch breathy.Â
âMhm,â John rumbles, smoothing a hand up your back one last time, just to double check. Only clenching your fists until the skin around your knuckles tighten keeps you from shuddering at his touch. âLemme justââÂ
Your throat constricts when you feel him reknot the back of your bikini top, fingers quick and deft for their size. Heâs tied knots before. Itâs better not to let that thought sink in too deep.Â
Turning over onto your back takes a near insuperable amount of energy, the rest wrung from your body by the hands now preoccupied with readjusting his shorts.Â
âYou alright if I take him for a swim?â John asks, holding his squirming son against his bare chest.Â
You wave him off, a hand coming up to shield your eyes from the sun.Â
You canât help but stare at his ass as he walks away, practically mesmerised. In the water, he wades up to his knees with his son still cradled in one arm. The ocean water laps at his shins, dappled with light, low waves in the distance scintillating at their peaks. The ends of his swim shorts cling to his legs as the water leaches into the fabric.Â
Trying to keep your eyes off him is a losing game, not when Johnâs clad in nothing more than a pair of swim trunks, broad shoulders and chest on display, and now your hands tingle with the memory of how they felt rubbing suntan lotion over his skin. His trunks are pulled taut around thick thigh muscles, just barely loose enough to keep from being indecent.Â
The panic returns when you catch some nearby women ogling him, one angling her body towards him like sheâs considering walking over, and thatâs when your heart beats too fast and you stumble to your feet, leaving your beach towel and umbrella behind to go join John in the water.Â
âHey sweetheart,â he greets when youâre only a few steps away, shivering when the cold water touches your feet. âMissed us, did ya?â
He reels you in with his free arm, pulling you into his side before transferring the baby into the cradle of your arms. Doesnât even flinch when your breast is pressed against his side, as if itâs nothing out of the ordinary. As if your cheek wasnât nearly flush with the pelt of dark hair growing in whorls on his chest, your eye level with a dark, flat nipple.Â
The girls hovering nearby scrunch their noses up when they notice you snuggled up against Johnâs chest. Assuming you must be someone special for him to be holding you that way; like a girlfriend or a wifeâ
You choke off the rest of that thought before it can take root.Â
The rest of the trip is no better. Youâre a right mess made worse by the cloying heat and the forced proximity. At the restaurant, John pulls your chair out for you and then sits right beside you, arm resting on the back of your chair while he talks, cologne clotting the air around you. Heâs popular wherever he goesâeasy candour and winsome smile able to make anyone, from the servers to the other patrons, want to get to know him better.Â
All you can do is bask in the radiance; a sun in the middle of any room.Â
Back at the house, you sleep in the other room, only a single, flimsy wall between your room and Johnâs. The walls are so thin that you can hear every groan and snore and snuffle, head ringing with his sounds until you fall asleep and they permeate your dreams instead.Â
At seven in the morning, you wake to the sound of him rolling over in his bed, the mattress squeaking under his weight, and taking himself in hand. The sound of flesh against flesh; the groans bitten off too late for you not to catch them, sweat beading on your hairline as you stare at the white wall and picture John on the other side, big chest panting with his breaths as he tugs on his cock. You listen until his final groan, fingers petting at your clit until you have no choice but to turn your head into your pillow to muffle your sobs.Â
As best as you try to put it out of mind, you canât meet his eyes at breakfast.Â
You flinch when the same hand that he mustâve used to jerk himself off comes down onto the top of your head when John goes to refill his mug of coffee. âSleep well last night?â he asks, deep voice still coated in sleep.Â
âNot bad,â you whisper.Â
Shivering when he drops his hand to the junction between your shoulder and your neck and gives it a squeeze.

Thinking about getting picked up by Gaz and Soap at a bar for a threesome. You think theyre just two (insanely hot) bisexual boyfriends who wanted to pick up some pussy for a one night stand, but when they invite you to stay the night after the best sex of your life (because let's be honest, you couldn't have walked home if you tried,) you find yourself sandwiched between them for cuddles. Ok, sure. Its normal to cuddle after a hookup. But come morning, they both linger in bed with you, trapping you between them as the paw at your soft body.
They insist you stay for breakfast-or, well, lunch actually, because its afternoon by the time they let you escape their hold. Gaz insists that you shower in their bathroom while they cook in the kitchen, and Soap even gives you a new unused toothbrush, and sets out some sweatpants and a tshirt for you to wear. When you emerge all clean and fresh and dressed in their clothes ("oh you don't want to wear that tight sweaty dress from last night. These will be much more comfortable."), the three of you eat together. Just as you're about to thank them again and head out, they pull you to the couch and nearly beg you to stay and watch a movie with them.
Before you know it, you've found yourself in their bed again and spending the night. They keep finding more excuses for you to stay until it's sunday night and you really should be going because you have to work in the morning. Reluctantly, (and after just one more round with each of them) the take you back home.
That must be the end of it, right? Wrong. They text you asking what you're doing after work. They know this really cool speakeasy spot across town they just know you'll love. They can even pick you up from work! Oh please, lovie, they know it's only monday but won't you come out with them? No? Okay, okay, maybe tomorrow?
They wear you down and you dont know why you let them. Probably because you've never slept with anyone so gorgeous, let alone TWO of them. You agree to meet on Wednesday- and just one drink! You swear! But your resolve melts like butter in the sun and you fall back into their bed once again. And again and again, until you finally have to ask what their deal is.
"Oh, darling, didn't we say we were looking for a third?"

Wanna be my part-time cat?
pairing: Max Verstappen x shifter!reader
summary: You can turn into a cat and spent a really nice day as one in Monaco. Until some maniac picked you up and took you home, that is.
part two
It wasn't your fault. No, really, it wasn't. You were minding your own business, wandering around the streets of Monaco as a cat, occasionally begging for pets, and enjoying the view from the side of the road, watching as luxury cars kept passing by. It was a good day. Relaxing.
But then this idiot appeared, for some reason assuming you were planning to jump in front of a car, and he didn't hesitate to pick you up. âYou shouldn't be hanging out here, it's dangerous,â he cooed as he scratched your ear.
It was nice, all right, but being held without waiting for you to decide whether or not you wanted it was too much. You tried to twist your body to escape, but he only adjusted his grip to keep you there in his arms. You watched him with your ears pushed back, but he only smiled.
âYou don't have a collar. Who would let such a beautiful ragdoll out without one? You must be a stray,â he added, clearly thinking about something that you had a feeling you wouldnât like. âAll right, you're coming with me. I'm sure you'll get along with my cats.â
He carried you to his car and gently put you on the passenger seat, and even as he drove, he kept glancing over at you with that stupid smile on his face. When he reached out to touch you, you hissed at him and backed away, hoping this would make him understand that you didn't want to be there.
He kept talking to you in a hushed tone to calm you down, as if you were a little kid, and it became a lot more effective when you didn't hear the engine of his car running in the background anymore. You became sleepy and couldn't hold back a yawn, but that only made him chuckle before grabbing you and taking you up to his home.
âYou'll stay in my bedroom for a while, just until the others get used to having you around,â he explained over the meowing of his other cats. âIt's okay, you'll get to know her, don't freak out,â he then told the other two.
All you could do was play along for now. It was Saturday afternoon, you only had to work on Monday, so hopefully you'd get the chance to sneak out before that. Once he put you on his bed, he sat down and waited for you to make the first move. You didn't want to do that, so you just kept staring at him, hoping he would get the message and leave you alone.
He didn't. Well, he did leave for a few minutes at the time, but he always returned before you could do anything about your situation. Late at night he put his handheld console aside and lay down in bed, patting the mattress next to him in an attempt to convince you to move over to him.
But you didn't move, you simply sat there in the armchair next to the bed and watched him with a judging look in your blue eyes. He looked over at you every now and then, but eventually he let out a long sigh and said, âPlease, stop staring at me like that.â
For a short while you kept watching him, but then you let it go and curled up to sleep. Sometime in the middle of the night you jumped over to the bed and took a closer look at him. He was familiar, but you couldn't remember where you had met him. Either way, he smelled good. And he was warm. And there was a little empty space on the left side of the bed next to him that was the perfect size for you.
Though you felt the bed shift in the morning, you were too lazy to open your eyes. If he wanted to leave, he could, it was his place, and right now you were way too comfortable to care. But when you realized he had been away for a little too long compared to the day before, you decided to move closer to the door to eavesdrop.
No sounds were coming from outside. Maybe he left. Maybe this was your chance to get away. Knowing opening doors and dealing with locks would be a little difficult as a cat, you shifted back into your human form. Before you went anywhere, you decided to raid his walk-in closet and look for something to wear.
You weren't a big sports fan, but thanks to a friend who was a die-hard Red Bull Racing fan, you recognized their merch right away. Why did he have multiple t-shirts? You rolled your eyes, but still decided to steal one of thoseâat least you could hand it over to your friendâbefore moving on to find some shorts or sweatpants.
The biggest obstacle turned out to be waiting right outside the bedroom door; his other cats. When you opened it to leave the room, they immediately raced there and kept hissing at you, convincing you that maybe you shouldn't force leaving on your own. You didn't want to reveal your secret, but those damn idiots didn't give you another choice.
So you lay down on the bed and waited for the man of the house to return. Your sense of smell was weaker as a human, but you still recognized that familiar musky scent of his that was all over the pillow. It was surprisingly nice, you could've slept pretty well here if you were about to let that happen.
Another two hours passed before you finally heard the front door close, and you sat on the edge of the bed to wait for him. A very small, but very loud part of you couldn't wait to see him again. You tried to shut it up, you tried to remind yourself that he quite literally kidnapped you, but this little voice kept telling you that he thought you were just a normal cat.
âWhat the hell are you doing in my bedroom? And why are you in my clothes?â you heard his annoyed voice the moment he entered the room.
He wasn't freaked out, if anything, he was annoyed. Did it happen often? Did random women show up in his home every now and then? Rolling your eyes, you shrugged then pointed a finger at him.
âYou were the one who locked me up here,â you told him.
The man took a threatening step forward, his phone already in his hand. âI most definitely didn't. And where's my cat?â he asked as he looked around to see if you were hiding somewhere.
With a sigh, you stood up and walked over to him. âRight in front of you. And by the way, I wasn't planning to jump in front of those cars, I was perfectly happy where I was. Oh, and I was staring at you from the armchair because I didn't trust you,â you informed him with a cheeky grin.
It took him a few seconds to comprehend your words. At first he didn't seem to believe you, but then he gulped and nodded. âOkay, let's say I believe you. How?â he asked with his hands on his hips.
âDoes it matter?â
âYes.â
âI won't tell you. I can't.â
Letting out a frustrated groan, he gently grabbed the hem of your shirt and pulled you closer. âSo you're telling me that I found a gorgeous cat that I can't keep?â You nodded, although this close proximity put some strange ideas in your head that you tried to push aside for now. âToo bad, I slept so well once you curled up next to me.â
You tilted your head to the side as you watched him. Was he flirting with you? Well, he sure wasn't wasting his time. âI don't even know who you are,â you informed him.
He looked genuinely surprised. âYou don't?â You shook your head in response. âI'm Max. Three-time Formula 1 world champion, but who's counting,â he added with a laugh. Realization probably became visible on your face, because his smile grew even wider. âSo you've heard about me.â
Nodding, you tried to look anywhere but into those stupid blue eyes. âMy friend's a big fan.â
âThen keep the shirt. Not everyone has one of these. And it also looks good on you,â he added, making you clear your throat. It wasn't good, he knew perfectly well how to get under your skin. âBut seriously, I want my cat back.â
âI have a life with responsibilities, I can't be a full-time cat,â you told him with a laugh.
âThen be my part-time cat. Do whatever you want during the day, then come here and be my cat for the night,â he suggested.
You looked at the door over his shoulder where you saw a glimpse of one of the cats. âYour other cats hate me. I couldn't even leave your bedroom,â you said with a pout.
Max turned back to look at the criminals in question. âIt'll be fine,â he said when he turned back to you.
But you didn't look convinced, and your words confirmed that when you pushed his hands away and took a step back from him. âI should go. I'll get your clothes cleaned and return them as soon as I can,â you promised.
âNo need. But think about my offer.â You nodded, then pointed at the door as you took a hesitant step towards it. âRight, the cats. Come with me, they'll leave you alone if I'm there.â
He took your hand on the way to the front door, and it was getting harder and harder to convince yourself it was bad. Because it wasn't. It was nice. And you couldn't deny that last night you slept pretty well next to him. It was comfortable. Being near him was comfortable.
Fuck.
You were actually beginning to consider his offer.

Monster Mayhem: Siren's Song [Part 4]
Gender Neutral Reader x Vil Schoenheit Word Count: 7.2k
Summary: It is very, incredibly important not to get attached to someone who will no doubt be leaving you high and dry to die stranded on an island any day nowâbe they man or fish. And you are definitely, definitely following that rule. For sure.
đ¶ïž Obligatory Warning for Mild Spice
[PART 1] [PART 1.5] [PART 2] [PART 3] [PART 4] [PART 5]
The next morning, there was a conch shell set beside the familiar offering of half-mauled fish.
The insides were a shining, pearlescent pinkâsmooth and sleek. You picked it up curiously and turned it over in your palms. Youâd never seen such a complete one before. Normally they were at least a bit dinged, cracked here or there along the thin edges. But this one was practically perfect. It sat heavy and warm in your palm, and you brushed a finger along the rough ridges.
You looked up and the Siren was lounging at the shoreline, waiting expectantly.
âThank you,â you said. âItâs really pretty.â
He preened, the fins along the side of his head fluttering wide and colorful. You huffed, amused, and set the shell neatly at the forefront of your slowly accumulating corner of Things. Youâd rebuilt the little shanty shelter that heâd had his seagull minions pick apart into useless nonsense that first day together, and it wasnât much, but it was enough to keep some of the sun off your shoulders at the height of the afternoon and would probably (maybe) hold up under a bit of rain. And that pleasantly cozy hovel of yours was where youâd been keeping your Stuff. The best sticks for poking at the fire, a rock that youâd found with a dip in the middle that made it sort of, almost a bowl if you squinted hard enough, bunches of drying beach grasses that youâd been tediously twining together into bits of rope and other nonsense. That sort of thing.
You placed the conch shell on the roof of it, prodding at it with the tips of your fingers until it sat just so. Like a figurehead on a ship. The crown jewel on your little mess of ferns and driftwood.
âWhat do you think?â you asked, turning back to the Siren. âReally brings the room together, huh?â
He puffed something under his breath and rolled those amethyst eyes of his, but there was a curl to his lips that looked far more amused than irritated.
You trudged back over and plopped beside him in the sand, the soft, low roll of the waves playing against your toes.
âToday feels like itâs going to be gross again,â you sighed, squinting up at the sun overhead in distaste. The big ball of glowing fire had barely crawled its way over the horizon and already it felt like the world was beginning to steam.
The Siren curled his claws around your ankle and tugged.
You arched a brow at him and he pushed his stupidly, perfectly shaped ones up right back. Like he was positive that he could out stink-face you with ease.
âItâs too early to swim,â you complained.
He tugged again.
âI canât be in the water that long. Youâre going to turn me into a prune.â
He said something back, mouth quirking in irritation, and you focused hard on the shape of it. His expression smoothed with that familiar, near-eerie perception of his and he was reaching forward to dig his free fingers into the sand at your hip.
âDonât know what that is.â
âItâs like aââ you frowned, waving your hand around your head. âYâknow. A fruit, thatâs gone pruney. A prune.â
He looked at you like you were the dumbest human heâd ever met, and to be fair you very well could have been. You doubted it was an extensive list. And even if it was, you tended to have a proclivity for landing near the top of those illustrious sorts of rankings either way. At least thatâs what your Captain saw fit to remind you ad nauseum.
So, like the very mature and intellectually competent person that you were, you kicked a mess of seawater right into his face. And then the Siren was screaming something silent and mad that had all the goosebumps on your arms popping up to say hello, and he was dragging you into the shallows ass first. You skidded along the wet sand and landed in the white surf with a laugh that you had to swallow real fast. Because if you drowned in three inches of water just because you couldnât manage to not choke to death on a giggle fit, youâd never forgive yourself.
.
.
That night, you were lounging by the fire with a belly full of seared snapper and the Siren curled just as contentedly only a few feet away. His fins were splayed out across the damp sands, and you couldnât help but compare them yet again to some of the finest, spun silks youâd ever seen. Even when theyâd been pinched and shredded beneath the prickly teeth of your ropes, theyâd still been lovely. But now that they were near-fully-healed, the spread of them was truly impressive.
And they were. Almost healed, that is. You could barely make out the trailing, scar-puckered lines of even the biggest tears anymore. Which was good! Great, even. Because that meant heâd be able to begin his journey home soon, didnât it? And then at least one of you would manage to get away from this barren mess of rocks and sand.
There was a thump against your thighs that had you jolting back into focus, and you looked down to see a pair of familiar, gem-cut irises staring back in the dark.
The Siren was glaring up at you like there was a Purpose to his sudden loss of personal boundaries, and you blinked down at him in confusion. After a long moment of nothing but your silent gawking, his brow started to pinch and the skin around his eyes went tight with irritation. The fins along his ears rippled like a pissy cat raising its hackles in preparation to lunge, and you cautiously placed a hand against the edge of one. The grumpy fluttering stopped all at once, and if you were a touch more sun-poisoned you would say that those delicate, purple pins relaxed against your palm. Either way, you were clearly on the right track. So you let your fingers trail down towards his temples, and then to the salt-curled waves of his hair. His eyes slipped closed with a pleasant rumble that you could feel all along your skin, and you puffed in half-hearted irritation. Prickly, fussy, bastard man.
You werenât really sure what he wanted, but for now the gentle scratch of your nails against his scalp seemed to do the trick. After a few cycles of lazy petting, you let your fingers catch in some of the softer, pale hair beneath his fins. It was a bit tangledâpossibly from all that frilly posturing of hisâand you carefully began picking apart the small knots there one by one. Once those were cleared away, you found yourself with little else to do but sit and play with the newly freed waves of lavender-tipped gold. You tucked one strand over the next, twisting the familiar pattern of a simple braid beneath your palms.
âDeuce grew his hair out at one point,â you chattered idly as you wove those silky locks together beneath your fingers. âThatâs someone from my ship, by the way. Deuce. Anyways. He thought itâd make him look more rugged, or whatever. But he just ended up looking like some rogue, sea elf, and everyone was teasing him about how heâd gone for âwindswept sailorâ and ended up with âfoppish, little lordling.â So he chopped it all off again.â
The Siren hummed, and you could feel it against the pads of your fingers.
âWhich was a real shame,â you continued. âBecause obviously I spent all that time learning to braid it, but also because it actually looked pretty niceâOUCH! What is your problemâ"
You yanked your hand away from his sharp teeth and cradled your smarting fingers to your chest. Because the stupid fish had bitten you! Not hard, or anything. Just a little nip. But itâd still hurt. If less as a genuine injury and more as a sting to your pride.
The Siren spat something quick and harsh under his breath, turning up his nose like youâd been the one to err here, and not his wandering fangs.
âWhat?â you huffed, reaching out to flick at those purple fins in irritation. They twitched against the side of his head to smack at your fingers. âOh, Iâm sorry, am I not allowed to call anyone else pretty, your highness?â
The Siren rolled his eyes with a look that screamed âwell, duh,â and you forced your irritation to override the little, bursting bubble of fondness in your chest. So silly, so silly. This ridiculously primped fish of yours.
âWell, too bad,â you grouched, tugging at the end of that half-bound braid. âJust because you win âmost attractive specimen on the islandâ doesnât mean you get to tell me to pretend Iâm blind on top of being deaf. Let me have something, you prick.â And it wasnât like it was much of a competitionâseeing as the entrants were you, him, and the octopus (if you were being generous). Less of a contest and more of a merciful slaughter, perhaps. A kindness that you were even allowed to share the same stage at all.
The Siren muttered something low and amused under his breath, the amethyst in his irises twinkling with the crackling, orange light of the embers beside you. He reached up to twist his claws along your palm and snatch the hand heâd so viciously nippedâbringing it down to eyelevel to observe it more closely in the dim glow of the fire. There was a steady trickle of blood bubbling up along your thumb. Honestly, not much worse than a papercut. Nevertheless, his brow quirked at the soft trail of red and his gaze jumped up to yours with a pointed sort of curiosity.
âWhat were you expecting to happen? Humans are fragile,â you huffed. âAt least more than you are. Itâs not like I have scales or things to keep me safe.â
His mouth tucked down on a frown, and his tail swept irritably back and forth through the sand.
âWhat? Itâs not like you didnât know that,â you tried, awkward. Because he ate stupid, little flesh bags like you for breakfast. Surely he ought to be well aware that there wasnât much there. Just skin, and muscle, and all the gory, gooey bits beneath. Just like how you knew what it felt like to bite into a piece of bread, or the crunch of an apple. Solid enough to survive in its own right, but something that would give beneath your teeth easily enough that calling it anything other than âdelicateâ would have been a gross exaggeration.
He turned your palm this way and that, brow pinching down more and more with each fresh prick of crimson. His tail beat against the sand and his talons curled up and away from your skinâlike he was worried just touching your fragile, little, egg-shell of an exterior would burst it.
âItâs fine,â you blurted out, still far too confuddled over his progressive panic. You pulled your hand away from his claws and popped your finger in your mouth. âSee?â you garbled around the faint taste of copper. And then pulled it out with a pop to show him the slowing trickle. âTotally fine. Just a scratch.â
The Siren watched that little bubble of red with all the vigilance of a hawk eyeing its super, and then he was snatching your wrist back between his talons and dragging your hand down towards his own mouth. And oh my God, this was it. Heâd finally decided to eat you after all. What was it? Had your oh-so-breakable human foibles finally pushed him over the edge? Or was it the blood? Were Sirens like sharks? Driven to hungry frenzy by the very scent of yourâ
There was a gentle, wet warmth along your skin and you blinked through your hysteric descent into adrenaline-manic-mania to see the Siren carefully cleaning the blood along your cut, just as you had only moments beforeâhis tongue running smooth lines along the teeny wound until the sore skin was tingling and spotless. Granted, his endeavors were carried out with a great deal more delicacy than your earlier example of just shoving your whole finger into your mouth like a gremlin, butâŠ
âUhmââ you spluttered, too gobsmacked to come up with much else. âYouâahâyou donât have toâuhâ"
The Siren grumped something at you that you could feel the shape of against your palm, and then returned to diligently wiping away each new drop as it appeared. It was a strange sort of sensation. Not bristly like a catâs tongue, but certainly not all human. There was a sting to itâsomething hot and prickly. Poison, maybe? Or⊠something. Whatever it was, it had the hair on the back of your neck rising to attention and a shiver working along your shoulders. He kept at, silent and meticulous, until finallyâfinallyâthe bleeding slowed to a stop. He hummed and turned your palm this way and that, looking over the drying nick in your skin like an artist admiring their work.
Once he was content with whatever it was heâd been searching for, he tucked your hand back along the fins at the side of his head and butted up against your palm in as blatant of a âget back to workâ as youâd ever seen.
You swallowed the weird mess of something that had clawed its way up to tangle your tongue and dug your nails back against his scalp just to give yourself something to do other thanâthanâ
âI hope you donât expect me to do that for you,â you babbled, still far too out of your head with What In The Fuck Was That to do much but gawk like an absolute imbecile at the fact that heâd actually, factually, justâ
The Siren rolled his eyes and reached over to drag the point of his talon along the sand at your hip.
âNo need. Already healed.â
You barked out a startled laugh and tugged at the ends of his hair. Your fingers caught at the edge of the braid youâd been weaving, loosening one of the twining sections, and he was hissing and swatting your hands back into placeâpoking around with his dark claws at the little end youâd fussed with until it was exactly how it had been. And then was dragging your hands back to the half-woven bulk of it with a pointed snarl that was clearly an order to finish what you started, human. Or else.
âOkay, okay, jeesh. Iâm on it.â
The Siren trilled low and rumbling under his breath, and beneath the weight of your palm it almost felt like the steady drone of a catâs purr. Warm, and pleasant, and comfortable in a way you couldnât quite place. The thin strands of chain-twined-rope youâd woven to make his necklace pressed into your thighs with a scratchy tickle, and the pretty piece of sea glass at its end reflected the low light of the fire in a kaleidoscope of purples. His fins flicked against your fingers in a steady tempo, and when you gave in and pinched one he was rolling onto his side to shove the full weight of himself into your lap. You whined, and bitched, and complained about suffocation, and the stupid bastard of a fish just smacked his tail indignantly against the wet sand and draped over you even more.
Seven, he was such a nightmare. And you were going to miss him so, so much.
.
.
The next day passed in much the same way as the one before, and the day after that, and the day after that. And as pleasant as it was, you couldnât help but feel like the headsman's axe was hanging over your neck. Always thereâjust a breadth away from falling.
You were fixing your Sirenâs hairâredoing that braid of his that he insisted you tuck into his golden locks each and every morningâand normally he was quite responsive to your prattling. Flicking you with his fins and curling his tail along your ankles as you rambled. A silent, steady way of expressing his interest when you couldnât hear his own responses in return. But today he was⊠distant. Amethyst eyes locked on the grand expanse of the ocean before you with a forlorn sort of expression on his face. The water was still and quiet today, with sunlight bouncing off the low, rolling waves in a pretty glimmer like the glow off his own, shining scales.
You trailed off, fingers falling from his finished braid to twist in your lap. And he just kept staring. Fins half-pricked along the side of his head and gaze heavy with focus.
You swallowed around the tightness in your chest and forced a smile. You hopped to your feet with a merry, little bounce and reached down to pat him on the shoulder.
âIt seems like a nice day for a swim,â you said, and ignored how you could feel your nerves eating through the words. The wobble of them in your throat.
The Siren startled, as much as someone as grandly majestic as he could really do such a thing, and turned your way with a fondly exacerbated huff. He held up a hand, like he was expecting to drag you along with him into the lulling tide, and you shooed away his fingers. His brow pinched and his mouth turned down at the corners.
âFor you, I mean,â you clarified. Like your blatant stepping away from the waterâs edge wasnât an obvious rejection in its own right. You turned back out towards the ocean beyond your little cove. âYour fins are doing a lot better, arenât they? You could probably stretch them a bit, right? With how smooth the waters are today.â
He hummed, considerate, gaze skirting out to track your own. You swallowed around another ball of prickling ice in your throat and kept your grin buoyant and encouraging.
And then he turned back and offered you his hand again.
You frowned, confused. âI canât follow you out there.â
He rolled his eyes and leaned forward to dig his talons into the damp sand.
âI will swim with you.â
A pause, where he reached out to poke at your ankle with a pointed jab, jab, jab before finishing off with aâ
âLike always. Stupid.â
âOh, yeah? Well, I wonât be so stupid when you ditch me halfway out and I drown in the riptide,â you harrumphed and his eyes narrowed grumpily.
He dragged his claws through the sand in short, angry jerks.
âWonât leave.â
âUh-huh,â you drawled, swallowing stiffly again when that curl of awful something tightened behind your ribs. Hoping you could manage to choke it down. It sat heavy and unpleasant on the back of your tongue, like food gone off.
He underlined the âwonâtâ with hard, pissy strokes.
âHow about this,â you tried, because man oh man, you couldnât do this. It was going to turn you into a ridiculously weepy, clingy mess if he kept talking (writing?) like this. âProve that your fins work well enough to keep you up and alive before I risk it. And then we can go from there.â
The Siren huffed, sending the longer ends of his hair flipping out to the sides. But those gem-cut eyes of his kept flicking out to sea, and you could see the tip of his tail twitching back and forthâlike he was itching to just leap forward and swim. The fins along his ears pricked up again, and then he was turning his nose up at you with some petulant comment under his breath and diving forward into the surf. He smacked his tail down with a splash!, drenching you in a mess of salt and seafoam. You spat, and hacked, and scrubbed the water from your eyes.
âGreat way to prove you wonât try and drown me!â you called, hands cupped over your mouth and still spluttering around lingering saltwater. He reared up quick enough to swipe another wave your way before slipping back under, and you laughed through the spray of mist.
You settled yourself back in the sand, ankles crossed and chin pillowed in your knees, and watched the shadow of him dance just beneath the surfaceâstarting in his familiar, looping circles before slowly venturing towards the mouth of the cove. He paced along the breakwater, pectoral fins cresting above the waves to glint bright and sleek in the light of the morning. And then he was darting forward with a great beat of his tail, spraying salt behind him as he dove towards the depths. You waited, anxious, as one moment faded to the next, and thenâfinallyâthere was a burst of frothing bubbles as he broke the surface with a great, curling leapâfins flared wide like the wings of a great bird and scales shining like jewels. It was nearly effortless, how he crested over the water. Diving back down in a mess of spitting mists with a flick of those long, trailing fins. He leapt up again, twisting in the air to crash down on his back and it almost looked like he was dancing. You could see the white flash of his grin even from all the way where you were sat. You didnât think youâd ever seen him so happy. Truly, a sight worthy of every grand tale youâd heard of the Sirens of the Sea.
He circled the mouth of the bay at least a dozen times moreâfast, and wild, and breaching the waves in a burst of seafoam like he was trying to give every pod of dolphins out there a run for their money. Gradually, he began to lose steam, and those grand leaps melted into soft curls of his tail in the tide. And honestly, this was the part where you expected him to sink beneath the surface and glide off into the sunset. You braced yourself for itâfor the moment that golden head of his would vanish beneath the water and never pop back up againâbut instead he bobbed closer.
The Siren rolled in with the waves, panting, and flushed, and looking like someone coming off of a marathon. The muscles all along his torso were jittery with the strain of it, and he looked positively exhausted. Ecstatic beyond compare, but exhausted. He slipped up the damp shore with wobbly arms and came to a stop at your side before very gracelessly and rudely flopping the entirety of his sopping wet bulk onto your person and squashing you into the muck.
You squawked, rightfully indignant, and he just puffed against your neck and let his tail smack harder against your flailing legs.
âYouâre going to crush me!â you wailed, shoving at his shoulder.
He rolled his eyes and curled his fins along your hipsâspreading himself out in the sands like your complaints held no merit whatsoever. You could feel the rapid rise and fall of his chest against yours, and the rabbit-fast thump-thump-thump of his heart. His skin was so warm. You could even feel the heat of it off his scales, which you hadnât even thought was possible. Werenât all fishy, scaly things supposed to be cold? Slimy, and gross, and like poking a wet blob of some unmentionable gunk scraped off the hull of a ship? Instead it was just⊠smooth. Glass-polish sleek and all warm muscle twined along your much, much smaller self.
You cleared your throat and turned to blow a frustrated raspberry against the sand.
âYou do realize if you break all my bones that there isnât going to be anyone to cook your stupid fish for you anymore.â
The Siren grumbled something against your shoulder that almost felt like the breathy puff of a laugh, and then he was collapsing all over again with a sigh that ruffled all the soft, short hairs at the nape of your neck. He scrubbed his cheek against the curve of your throat and you froze. Because it almost felt likeâwas he purring?
A deep, low, tremulous thing that you could feel rumbling against your skin. Like laying a hand against a mast strung too tight in a storm. Or maybe more like that one time youâd found a stray cat lounging in the sun by the docksâthe sweet, old thing chirping softly beneath your palm in a lulling drone that tickled all the way up your arm. Â
The Sirenâs purr wasnât quite like either of those things, but perhaps a mix of the two. Dangerous but warm, powerful but cosseted. More predator than pet, and, well, thatâs what he was, wasnât he? And honestly, it was pretty nice. A language you could feel rather than hear, something just for you.
So you let yourself relax beneath the weight of his scaly bulk with a sigh that wasnât quite as aggrieved as you would have liked, and his tail twisted another loop around your calves. His fins spread around the pair of you like a roll of fine silks, and while the texture wasnât exactly soft, they were delicate enough not to feel suffocating or coarse either. Sleek and cool to the touch, and maybe the thickness of canvas. And there were just so many of them. Long, and trailing, and ruffled along the edges like the folds of a fine-boned fan. Your weird, purple blanket. If Riddle ever found out youâd been using a Siren as bed linens, heâd probably have an aneurism and scrub you in one of the scullery buckets for a week straight.
It was stupidly easy to fall asleep like thatâwrapped up in lavender and plum, with the thrum of his heart next to yours. You napped all through the afternoon, and only woke up once the sun had set over the horizon.
You blinked awake to stars in the sky and a strange, scratchy sensation at your hip.
The Siren had apparently finished up whatever little bout of insanity that had made him think youâd be the perfect impromptu pillow. He hadnât gone farâor even anywhere at all reallyâbut he was propped up at the hip now instead of crushing you into the shore. His hand was resting just beneath the hem of your shirt, right over the origin of that bizarre, ticklish feeling. You blinked again to clear the salt and sleep-grit from your eyes, and realized it was his talons. Not ripping, or tearing, or rending. Just very, very carefully tracing a set of shapes into your skin. The same three symbols, over and over. Up, and down, and up, and curled.
He traced those shapes again, and again, and again. It was almostâyouâd think it was letters, if not for the strange, swirling pop of them. Almost like the words heâd written in his own language all those days ago. His claw dragged along the skin there in the faintest prickle, leaving slowly growing streaks of red in their wake with each repetition. You opened your mouth, ready to ask him what exactly he was so painstakingly etching into your hip, and paused.
Youâd realized over the past however many weeks youâd been marooned on this little crescent of sand and stone that maybe Sirens werenât all youâd thought them to be. And that maybe you really didnât know much about them at all. Something about the slow, cautious way that his claws were tracking along your skin made you think that this was another of those things that you just didnât get. And going by how quiet he was, how stalwart and careful he was being not to let the knife-sharp curves of those talons dig too deep or do anything other than trace back and forth, and back and forth, it might be something⊠Something important. Or at the very least something that you had no business bothering him about.
Least of all if heâd be leaving any day now.
So you tossed your head back on a very loud, very dramatic yawn and used the ensuing stretch to gently swat his hands away.
He didnât look put out by your ridiculous show of flopping around and scooching out of his grip, so that was good at least. You sat up and rubbed at your eyes, and he just kept staring. Kept to his place in the soft, wet sand not a foot away and eyes sharp in the lowlight of the evening.
âWell,â you chuffed on another yawn. âIâm starving. Dinner?â
The Siren rolled his eyes and dipped his chin in what could perhaps generously be classified as a nod. He reached up to flick at the mused braid in his hair with a pointed scowlâtwisted and tangled from the salt of the sea and his earlier rambunctious tomfoolery. You sighed, overly put upon, and hefted your way to your feet.
âYes, yes. And Iâll fix your stupid hair.â
Another nod, this one far more pleased, and the Siren settled himself neatly back into the low roll of the waves to watch you work.
.
.
The next morning when you clawed your way back into consciousness, the Siren was already awake and staring off into the distance.
The fins along his head were pricked in that same, focused way from before that made you think of a hound dog catching a scent. There was a strange sort of energy about himânot quite nervous, but certainly not anything comfortably at ease either. Unsettled. Jittery. The end of his tail flicked against the sand, and the fins along his spine curled and arched to an unsung tempo.
You followed the path of his leer and didnât see much of anything yourself. Just an endless stretch of blue in all directions with the occasional white crack of a wave breaking along its surface.
His tail smacked at the muck again and you felt something tight and stupidly, stupidly selfish curl in your stomach.
You swallowed it down, just like youâd said you would. Because youâd meant it when youâd told him he deserved his happy ending, and you werenât going to let the rotten, nervous thing growing in your guts stop him from having that. Not that you could even if you wanted to, but it was the principle.
ââŠare you going to swim again today?â you asked, and one of those fins swiveled in your direction. You came to stand at his side and curled your toes in the sand to keep yourself steady. âYou should, you know. To make sure everything is really all fixed.â
The Siren tore his gaze away from the sea to cant his head at you with a sharp, suspicious narrowing of his eyes.
You held your hands up in defense. âIâm just saying. You want to be able to go home, donât you? Back to your pod?â
He frowned, tight, but his glare flickered back out to the mouth of the bay like he couldnât help himself.
After a long, long moment, he reached out and dug his claws into the sand.
âNot safe yet.â
You arched a brow. âOh, come on. Iâm sure itâs fine. If anyone could make it back, itâd be you.â
He turned back your way and arched a brow, looking entirely unconvinced.
You huffed and crossed your arms. âDonât get all modest now. Youâre the most obnoxiously proud person Iâve ever metâfish or otherwise. Iâm sure you can do anything you set your mind to.â
His brow pinched again, and there was something almost like worry sparking in those amethyst eyes of his.
âLookââ you said, reaching out to plant a palm against his shoulder. âIf it doesnât work out, you can always just come right back here, okay? Itâs not like Iâm going anywhere.â
You werenât going to think about how nice that sounded, and how absolutely, bitterly selfish it was to hope that heâd turn right back around and head back. You werenât.
The Sirenâs brow pinched and he turned back to the open water, fins rippling against his sides and mouth twisted down at the corners.
You tugged at the braid in his hair.
âDonât make me tie you back up again just so I can drag you out.â
He scoffed and spat something at you that looked like it was properly bitchy, and it had your lips quirking on a smirk. But prissiness or no, heâd started to let himself slip down against the surf, to lull deeper into the shallows and flare his fins at his sides for balance rather than a show of irritation.
You swallowed the last, lingering bite of dread at the back of your throat and offered him a winning smile.
The Siren huffed, and right before he sunk all the way into the water, he set his talons by your feet and scribbledâ
âDo not do anything stupid.â
âYeah, yeah,â you waved off. âSure.â
He underlined the âdo notâ with a harsh sneer that could have made paint curl and the fiercest of generals quake in their boots, and you burst into peals of too-fond laughter.
âOkay, okay. I promise. Swear.â
He nodded, firm, and finallyâfinallyâsunk beneath the surface with a grand, sweeping beat of his tail.
He circled the whole of the bay once, twice, thrice, and then set out past the breakwater with another of those bounding leaps that looked like something straight out of a painting.
You sat and watched the rolling waves until the sun was high in the sky, and then long after it had begun its creeping descent. Fat and sluggish over the horizon, dripping gold along the water like the strokes of a paintbrush. Until there were no shadows in the tide, no purple fins popping up from beneath the surface to smack at your ankles. There hadnât been for hours now. The glint of his tail had slowly grown further and further away, and youâd been staring out at nothing for longer than not.
You stood with a sigh, legs wobbly and prickling with static as you stretched out of your scrunched up crouch.
You moved towards your little shanty hut and carefully readjusted the conch at its helm so that it sat just so. You stepped back with a soft nod and began your familiar trek towards the other side of the island, dutifully ignoring the stutter in your steps and that tight, miserable something twisting in your guts that you refused to name.
It was fine. Heâd be home soon, surely. With his podâhis family. Which was what youâd wanted. And now⊠well, you had to go catch some dinner for you and your octopus. And there was no use waiting around.
.
.
You fucking sucked at fishing.
Which was a lesson learned with miserable, sopping wet consequences. You sat in front of your stupid fire, ringing out your stupid, soaked shirt, and sneezing in the chill of the night air. Youâd never been responsible for hauling in food on The Rose Queen, and the Siren had basically been feeding your stranded ass from day one (whether intentional or otherwise). And so now here you were. Fishless, friendless, and freezing.
You sighed, miserable, and carefully made your way back to the familiar, little tidepool in the crags. You knelt down by the teeny pool of water there and the octopus inside was immediately scurrying for cover. When no tasty treats rained down overhead like the gift of some benevolent god, it slowly creeped its way out from beneath the stones with a trudging sort of paddling you wanted to call pouty.
âSorry, little guy,â you huffed. âI donât have anything for you today.â
You reached forward and the octopus panickedâtrying to flee so fast that the poor thing wound up twisting itself in knots. Its stubby tentacles curled and flailed uselessly in its puddle, and you tutted in sympathy. You scooped the blob into your palms and immediately four sets of tentacles were curling around your fingers like a lifeline. Its little suckers pulled at your skin with sticky smacks as it tried to burrow away into your skin. And SevensâOW! What the Hell!
âChill, chill!â you squawked, trying to wrangle the thing more securely into your hands and stop it from pinching the flesh clear off your bones. âIâm justâwould youâlook, I donât want to drop you, okay? So would you justâ"
The octopus screamed, and you didnât even think that was possible. You could feel the sharp, yowling vibrations of it all along your fingers and a few of the gulls nesting along the rocks took off into the air with a harried flurry of feathers and scrabbling claws. Their wings thwacked the back of your head and you swatted them away with a shrill scream of your own. Why did everything on this stupid island have to be a no good, dramatic, serenading, piece of shiâ
âFine!â you shrieked, feeling your molars ache with it. âBegone!â
And hurled the thing as far as you could over the edge of the rocky shore. It landed in the water with a lackluster plop of fat bubbles and immediately darted away like a prisoner fleeing captivity. And not, you know, the benevolent hand of the very lovely pirate who had been feeding and caring for it all these weeks.
You kicked angrily at a mess of pebbles, and then swore loud and furious when all it did was scuff up your toes and prick bruises into your heels.
You trudged back to your stupid, little hovel and collapsed miserably into the sand.
Here you were, trying to be noble, and kind, and give all of these ridiculous sea creatures the second chance at life that you would never have. And what did you get for it? An empty stomach, an aching heart, and gravel in your fucking feetâ
âWell,â you chattered to yourself. Pleasantly poisonous and tendons jumping in your jaw, âI suppose at least it canât get much worse.â
Which should have been the universeâs signal to do something truly petty. The skies opening overhead in a torrential downpour. Your little, stick home collapsing under the sheer weight of your patheticness. A crab scuttling up from the depths just to pinch your toes. Something like that.  Â
Instead, there was a gentle breeze that tickled your cheeks and coaxed you into looking out over the horizon.
There was something thereâsomething in the distance that you couldnât quite make out from where you were curled up suffering in the sand. You sniffled past angry tears and scrubbed the back of your hand over your nose, and then let that touch of wind guide you forward on wobbly legs. You had to climb all the way up the salt-slick rocks to get a good look at it. But there it was. Not too far at all actually.
A ship.
Large, and wooden, and cresting through the low rolling waves with all the ease of the monstrous vessel it looked to be. There was a silver insignia emblazoned on its side, but it was still too far away to make out the particulars. But you didnât care, because it was a ship. An actual, factual ship.
You waved your hands high over your head and shouted at the top of your lungs.
And holy shit, holy shitâmaybe the universe didnât actually hate your poor guts. Maybe thereâd be a happy ending to this whole thing after all.
You watched in the distance as an anchor dropped, and you had to stop yourself from tumbling off your rocky perch in your excitement. One of the small dinghies was lowered into the water and a gaggle of crew climbed down to man it. Slowly but surely, that little boat grew closer, and you sprinted down to the shoreline to meet it.
A man with short, dark hair climbed over the side and met you halfway. His eyes were soft, and brown, and kind, and he offered you a warm smile when you nearly tumbled straight into him in your hasteâcatching a hand around your arms and helping keep you upright.
He said something polite that you assumed was the usual sort of greeting and intrigue into how exactly youâd managed to find yourself in this state of affairs, and you hastily made to explain your situation as you always did.
âThank youâI canât hear, but I can write and readâAnd Iââ
Your train of thought cut off sharply, and your rambling explanations with it. The brunette was already nodding your way in sympathy and rattling off instructions to his crew. They were all decked out in slightly differing variations of the same, white and navy uniform. With golden buttons and sashes glinting in the low light and silver pendants pinned to their breast pockets. Your doe-eyed savior turned back your way and offered you his arm with another of those sap sweet smiles that lit his cheeks in a merry, rosy pink.
You hesitated, throat bobbing around something tight and cold that curdled along the back of your tongue.
Twining songbirds, wings frozen in flight as they soared up towards an endless sky.
The intricate, little emblem stared back at you proudly from its place on his chest, and you couldnât help but think of the Siren whoâd only just left your cove a few hours before.
âNot safe,â heâd demanded, dragging you away from the wreck so frantically youâd nearly drowned from it. âNot safe.â
The brunetteâs smile wavered at your hesitance, and he wrapped his hand around yours to tug you into the boat.
You climbed in on wobbly legs, becauseâwhat else were you supposed to do? Stay stranded on this little patch of sand and stone until you starved to death or went mad from loneliness? Run? From sailors with swords on their belts as long as your arm? To hide on an island that you could traverse in its entirety in a half hour or less? You were always one to happily snatch up the weird and wonderful opportunities life could present to you and run them into the ground, but now⊠What else was there?
You were settled against one of the small, wooden benches and the brunette shucked off his jacket to drape over your shoulders and the silver songbirds glinted in the low light. He offered you another of those warm, warm smiles before turning to call an order to his crew.
You sighed, miserable, and slouched against the sidingâfingers dangling down to brush along the surface of the water.
âDo not do anything stupid,â your Siren had said.
And youâd really been hoping to last more than twenty-four-freaking-hours before inevitably breaking that promise, but it seemed the universe really was out to get you after all.

Through Me (The Flood) - secret baby fic Simon Riley / female reader
Simon's short term rental is almost claustrophobic.
He tries to stay out of it, tries to keep himself busy. Active. After a week since you asked him to go home, to give you some space, he noticed he's lost weight. The thick of his ribs, his stomach, his thighs, has thinned out, cutting his bulk, exposing more muscle.
The grief feels more fresh than it has in years. Talking to you, telling you, has dredged up long buried things, agony and regret, pain that steals his breath and leaves him paralyzed. He forces himself not to think of it, but it still finds a way to creep in. To make him feel torn apart, turns him into a ghost.
He walks a lot. Walks to the store. Walks to the pub. Walks to the park. Sometimes he sits on the bench and watches mums push their buggies, wondering if it's something you might enjoy, if you were feeling better. Wishing he had made more of an effort to get you out of the flat, into the sunshine.
He's still walking to your building at night, standing under the tree, watching the lights flicker on and off. Your windows stay lit longer now, periods of sleep more infrequent, leaving him to worry that you're not getting enough rest, not taking care of yourself.
He walked all morning into early afternoon today. Tried to quell the nausea swirling in his stomach, tried not to watch the clock, or count the seconds. Tried to brace himself for the bittersweet he knew was coming.
>Hey, I'm going to be leaving pretty soon for work, and could be gone for a while. Could I see Orion before I go? Spend some time with him?
>Sure.
Your reply still rings in his ears. Short. Torturous.
But he doesn't blame you. He did it the wrong way. You have a child, his child, to protect, to take care of. Of course, you should be concerned. Maybe he should have found a better way to tell you. Maybe he shouldn't have told you at all.
A large part of him, the instinctual part, considered refusing you, when you asked him to give you some time, and he still hasn't made a decision about what he will do in the long run.
It would be so easy, to hide you away. To take you in the middle of the night, wake you up in a brand new home, high in hill, in a whole new country across a border.
When the knock on his door finally comes, he crams the overflow of emotion coursing through his heart into a teeny tiny box, and prays he'll be able to keep a lid on it.
"Hey." Orion turns in your grip, looking for Simon's voice, and you smother a wince at the shift in his weight.
"Hi." You look through him. Past him. To the left of his elbow, at his shoulder, the floor. Anywhere but his eyes.
"Thanks for letting me spend some time with him." Your lips go flat, but you shuffle the baby into his arms, managing to avoid skin to skin contact. It makes his stomach hurt worse than it already did.
"Of course, you're... you're his dad." You peek around him, trying to get a better look of the flat. "Do you uh, have stuff for him?"
"I went to the store."
"Okay. Well, good." You hand him the bag next. "I wasn't sure what you had so there are a few changes of clothes in there, just in case, and some bottles. They should probably go in the fridge. Diapers, some toys. Just in case... I didn't want.... I wanted you to have everything you might need." It's thoughtful of you, and he wants to smile, but you won't look at him.
"Thank you." You nod.
"Alright well, I'll come pick him up later? Just text me I guess, when you're ready. Hopefully he'll take a bottle."
"I can bring him-"
"No, that's okay." you cut him off sharply, shaking your head. He frowns.
"Why not?"
"I- I don't mind, coming by to get him."
"But if it's dark..."
"I can manage." You snap, and he purses his lips, but says nothing.
"Alright well, see you later then." You make some noncommittal noise, and then step closer, mouth pressing to Orion's cheek.
"Bye baby, love you." You finally look up at him, really look, and he holds his breath when he sees it all in your eyes. Pain. Confusion. Worry.
He did that.
The evening goes too fast. He manages to get Ry to nap, and drink over half a bottle, a huge win, but spends most of the time just holding him, walking him in circles in his flat, trying to memorize the feeling of his baby in his arms. He's fussier than usual, crying anytime Simon tries to put him down, which he doesn't mind, but concerns him. Is he like this at home, with you? Is this why you've been up more at night?
Still, it's over too soon, and when you're knocking on the door again, he stands on the other side a few seconds too long, wishing he had more time.
He's always wishing he had more time.
"How was he?"
"Good. More fussy than usual, but I got him to take most of a bottle. Is he doing alright?"
"He's been like this, the past few days. He's either going through a growth spurt, or developing some late colic. I hope it's the growth spurt." Oh no.
"Well, I'm here if you need anything. If you want me to take him at all." You nod.
"When uh... when are you leaving?"
"Two weeks or so. Once the guys get back, they'll have a few days debrief and then... we'll be off."
"Okay, well. Just let me know, when you want him again?"
"I will." He kisses Orion's cheek, whispering in his ear how much he loves him, before passing him to you. You have to reposition your posture to support his weight, and he winces. "Are you okay?" You blink at him, skeptical and surprised.
"I'm great Simon. Really peachy."
"Look, I know I really sprung-"
"Sprung? Is that what you're calling that? Simon... you blindsided me. You... you-" He holds up his hands.
"I'm much more careful now. I've learned a lot of hard lessons, and I would never, ever allow anything to happen to you or Orion." His shoulders slump, and he drops his eyes to the floor. Ashamed. Grief trying to work its way, trying to break him down just as it has all these years before. "I've learned from my mistakes." There's a long, uncomfortable since between the two of you, one that Orion fills with fussing, and then your voice cracks.
"Simon, that wasn't your fault.... I'm not... I'm not upset about... that. Or anything, that happened to you. I mean, I'm upset but not at you for that..." You take a deep breath. "I am upset for you, that those things happened to you, that you've been through such trauma, such horrible things." Tears wet your cheeks, but he doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. "I would never hold that against you. I'm upset about your job. And the danger it puts us in. I'm upset that I didn't know that you'd been gone for weeks, possibly months at a time. I'm upset that you promised me you'd be here, and then never mentioned the super secret task force that will... take you away from us." Orion cries, and you bounce him back and forth, finally looking Simon dead in the eye, facing him head on. "It feels like you've been lying to me, for weeks now. I thought we were in this, together, that we were- we were building something, together. Now it just feels like... I could lose you at any second instead. That Orion could lose his father, grow up without you." The last word rips from your lips in a sob, and you shake your head as he steps close.
"You will never lose me. Do you understand? That will never happen." He vows it, swears it, forces it out into the universe as a covenant, but you only shake your head again, sadly.
"You can't promise that."

Cart Girls & Curly Qâs
Luke Hughes x fem!reader
summary: luke has a crush on the cart girl
notes: for once, i feel like i didnât really struggle while writing luke. this probably isnât one of my best works, but i loved the idea and iâm so glad i was able to try to bring it to life. hope you enjoy!! happy reading! đ«¶đŒ
request: from my 400 follower celly - âYou come here often?â âWell, I work here. So I think Iâd have to say yes.â with Luke and maybe a cart girl at the golf club close to the summer lake house?
[3k]
Most of your friends absolutely hate going to work in the summertime. They hate being stuck in an office or storefront all day, no chance to enjoy the high UV and prime lake hours.
You, however, never wake up dreading your work.
During the cold, Michigan winters, you work as a bartender at your collegeâs local bar. You attend your classes in the morning, do your homework in the afternoon, then clock into your shifts at night. You have the routine down to a science.
During the summers, though, you found a job as the cart girl at the uppity country club closest to the large community of expensive lake houses you drive by every morning.
The tips are amazing, and getting paid to drive around in the sunshine and watch attractive men play golf all day is what you call a small piece of paradise. Not to mention youâre off by five oâclock every day, allowing time to join your friends and family out on the boat for night swims and evening rides.
Today was especially good, with it being one of the hottest days of the summer, your sales were sky high.
Youâve already had to restock your beer cooler three times this morning, and itâs barely even noon.
Your boss has really been pushing the sale of liquor, so you inform every group you pass about your buy a double, get a single shot half off deal, but nothing calls to a man more than a cold beer on a hot golf course.
Many of the men youâve served today have given you a tip simply because youâre out working in the heat, delivering beers âlike an angelâ one middle aged man told you, handing you an extra ten.
You just laughed and told him thank you, pocketing the cash. You always loved weekend mornings, locals and vacationers alike all over the course, upping your sales, and as a result, your tips.
As youâre leaving the club house after yet another restock, you see a group of guys that you assumed were around your age.
They were being loud, but not obnoxious, as they piled into two carts and sped their way out to the course, eager to get their game started.
You wondered when you would see them, having been told not to bother people until theyâre at least on hole two. Apparently, people get mad when you try to sell them alcohol in the middle of their first stroke.
Making your way around your normal path, you start at hole eight and work your way in a circle until you get back to the clubhouse, the later holes being your big money makers. People are either celebrating their lead or mourning their loss at that point, wanting a drink either way.
You sell a few shots, making your boss happy no doubt, but run out of beers for the fourth time that day around hole sixteen. You stop and offer to each group after that, selling a few more liquor items, but were mostly told to come back when you had beer again.
Flying down the cart path, you see the same group of guys from earlier around hole seven, one out of the group flagging you down as you speed by.
You slow your cart down to a stop and they walk over to meet you, grabbing their wallets from their carts as they approach you.
âSorry, boys, out of beer. On my way back to the clubhouse now to restock if you want to wait a few,â you tell them once theyâre within ear shot, not wanting to get their hopes up.
âWell, do you have anything you can sell us? Iâm getting beat pretty bad out here and need a pick me up. Donât really care what it is,â a brunette pleaded.
You tell him about the shot deals, and he hands you his I.D., requesting a double shot of crown and ginger-ale before turning and asking his cart buddy what he wanted.
âJack, what do you want?â he calls over to a guy that looked similar to him, thinking to yourself that they could be brothers.
He explains the discount to the other brunette, saying heâs already paid, just to pick what he wanted.
After viewing the second playerâs I.D., your brother theory is confirmed by their matching last name.
Jack, you learned, asked for a simple, funnily enough, Jack and coke.
âAlright, gentlemen, anything else I can do for you?â you ask, turning to face the last member of the group.
You make eye contact with a tall, curly-headed boy, noticing the pink tone of his cheeks when you catch him staring at you.
âAnything for you, curly Q?â you ask him, taking note of how attractive he was. You always play up the flirting a little when you find a player on the course attractive, figuring itâll help your sales while simultaneously allowing you to have a little fun.
His cheeks turn an ever-deeper shade of red when he realizes youâre talking to him, freezing up and averting his eyes. You feel a little bad for putting him on the spot, but you find his shyness endearing.
âNah, Lukey here isnât old enough, is he Quinny? Still got a few months till you can drink with the big bros. Isnât that right, Luke?â the brunette named Jack slaps who youâve now learned is Luke on the back.
You let out a chuckle, witnessing the deadly glare Luke shoots at his older brother.
âDonât worry, they picked a cart girl that isnât even old enough to drink, either. Wonât be able to drink the concoctions I make until next spring,â you tell him, hoping to alleviate a little of the embarrassment you caused him.
âOh, wow,â is all he utters out, bringing out another laugh from you.
âAlright, well, Iâll let you boys get back to your game,â you tell them, walking back over to get back into your cart.
You ride off, thinking of the tall, curly brunette the whole time.
Three hours later, youâre tending the clubhouse bar.
When you came back in for restock, your boss told you it was too hot for you to keep your role as cart girl all day, insisting you switch out with one of your coworkers.
You werenât too upset with the trade off, now in air conditioning but still getting tips from buzzed players after their game, either nursing their loss or celebrating their win.
The clubhouse gets busier as the day goes on, people dipping in for a quick cool off after playing eighteen holes in the heat.
âHey, new body down on the end. Care to get it for me?â your co-tender, Brady, asks you, the two of you working in tandem.
You nod at him as you finish pouring the beer in your hand, walking down to the other end of the bar.
âHey, player, what can I get for ya?â you ask the stranger, not looking up as you place a coaster in front of the patron.
âJust-Just a water, if you donât mind,â he asks, slightly stumbling his words.
You look up to see the curly brunette, Luke, from earlier.
âOh, itâs you. Curly Q,â you say, grabbing a glass and filling it with ice.
âNameâs Luke, actually,â he tells you, the redness from earlier returning to his cheeks.
âYeah, I remember. Just think Curly Q fits you better,â you smirk at him, placing the glass full of water on his coaster. âIâm Y/N.â
He mumbles a small thanks, taking a sip from the glass.
âAnything else I can get for you?â you ask him, glancing down the bar to see if any new customers have sat down.
He stares at you, his eyes caught like a deer in headlights.
You wait patiently for an answer, letting out a small giggle when he just continues to stare at you.
âAlright, well Iâll let you think about your answer and be right back,â you laugh as you start to walk away.
âWait!â Luke startles you, stopping you in your tracks. âUhh..do youâŠcome here often?â he stutters out, closing his eyes tightly in embarrassment as soon as the words leave his mouth.
Your eyes shine at him with amusement. âWell, I work here, so I think Iâd have to say yes,â you respond, smiling.
Luke peeks one eye open at you, seeing your amused expression and sighing, letting his body sag.
âYeah, I donât know why I asked that,â he runs his hand through his curls nervously.
You rest your arms on the bar in front of you. âEhh, donât worry about it,â you tell him, scrunching your nose as you shake your head.
Luke gives you a nervous smile, sliding his water towards his body and running his finger around the rim of the glass.
âIâm sure you talk to all kinds of idiots like me when youâre serving drinks, huh?â he asks, making your face fall a bit at his defeated tone.
You stand a little straighter. âNah, not really. Most of the idiots I talk to are just old and creepy, not my age and charming,â you tell him, finally earning a laugh from him.
His laugh was more of an amused scoff, but you already want to see the shy smile that makes its way onto his face afterwards, again.
âYeah, cause a guy that asks you if you come to your job often is the epitome of charming,â he looks up at you.
âWell, itâs kept me here talking to you so far, hasnât it?â
Luke blushes, making you think the man in front of you is unable to go two minutes without his face turning red.
âYeah, I guess it has,â he casts his eyes towards his lap.
âSo, Luke, you a local or here on vacation?â you ask him, glancing down at the quickly clearing stools. You know Brady is getting all of your tips right now, but you canât bring yourself to move from your spot.
âWell, a little bit of both. Technically on vacation because I live in New Jersey now, but my parents have owned a lake house here since I was a kid, so I claim the title of a local,â you finally get him to loosen up a little, his body language relaxing. âPlus I went to U of M for a little while, so Iâve spent quite a bit of time over in Ann Arbor.â
âAhh, a city boy,â you tease, grabbing a glass to wipe down, making it look like youâre at least partially doing your job. âWhyâd you leave Ann Arbor?â
âGot aâŠuhâŠjob offer in Jersey,â he tells you cryptically, eyes darting around the room.
ââA uhâŠjob offer?â What are you, in the mafia?â you ask him, mimicking his words and poking fun at his nervousness at telling you about his job.
âWell, not quite,â he starts, laughing a real laugh this time, causing you to mentally record the sound and store it in your brain. âIâŠahhhâŠI play hockey up there.â
Your eyebrows raise in surprise. âLike, professionally?â
He sinks back into his seat, looking like he wants to hide.
âYeah. For the New Jersey Devils. My brother, Jack plays for them, too,â He tries to pass some of the attention off of himself.
âWait, you and your brother both play in the NHL?â the impressed tone of your voice gives Luke a little boost of confidence.
âWell, both of my brothers, actually. But Quinn plays for the Canucks up in Vancouver. Jack and I are both in Jersey, though.â
You let your mouth hang open at him, not being able to hide your shock.
This earns another laugh from Luke.
âWhat kind of superhuman DNA do your parents possess?â you ask him.
âNot sure. Weâre still being studied as we speak,â Luke leans closer, whispering like heâs telling you a secret. âThe big wigs in the NHL havenât found out yet that they grew us in test tubes in their basement.â
You let out a laugh so loud that you gain the attention of several men on the other end of the bar, slapping your hand over your mouth.
Luke leans back in his seat, a fond smile on his face as he sees your embarrassed expression.
âHey, Y/N, you gonna come help me do your job or what?â you hear Brady yell, annoyed that heâs been working the whole bar alone for the past ten minutes.
You roll your eyes while still facing Luke, removing your hand from your mouth and turning your head to respond. âYeah, donât get your club all bent, Iâll be right there.â
Lukeâs still smiling at you when you turn back to face him.
âGuess thatâs my cue to get back to my job and quit talking to cute boys sitting at the bar, huh?â you spew, realizing what you just said a second too late.
Lukeâs eyebrows shoot up, his back straightening in surprise.
You pause all movements, staring at Luke.
âUhhâŠanyways, gotta go do my job. Yâknow, the thing I come around often for?â you make a call back to Lukeâs attempt at a line earlier, hoping it take some of the attention off of what you just said.
Luke chuckles at you. âYeah, I need to go meet back up with my fellow lab rats, anyways,â he tells you, reaching for his wallet, placing a twenty down on the bar.
âYou do realize water is free, right?â you tell him, sliding the bill back to him.
âYeah. Figured Iâd try to make up for the tips I caused you to lose, though,â he shrugs his shoulders, standing from his chair.
âNope, Iâm not taking your money. Feels like youâre just paying me for talking to you,â you tell him, holding the money out towards him and shaking it around, trying to make him take it.
Luke shakes his head at your stubbornness. âCâmon, just take it. Your coworker collected all kinds of tips while you were over here.â
âNope,â you shake your head, leaning over and grabbing Lukeâs arm, placing the money in his hand.
âI need to do something, though. I feel bad causing you to lose out on money that shouldâve been yours,â he insists.
âWell, I guess Iâll let you make it up to me,â you start, watching him try to lay the money down again and shooting your arm out, preventing him from doing so. âBy giving me your number,â you decide to be bold.
Luke goes still. âUhh, y-yeah. Sure,â he snaps out of his momentary freeze, fumbling for his phone, handing it over to you.
You put your number in his phone, sending yourself a text before handing it back with a wink.
âI guess Iâll talk to you later?â Luke asks, pushing his stool in.
You nod your head yes, turning to go back to your job duties.
You turn back around after you take a few steps, seeing Luke walking away with his back turned.
âHey, Curly Q!â you call after him, causing him to turn to look at you. âI get off at five, in case you were wondering,â you shout towards him, flashing a smirk before you walk away.
Luke smiles and shakes his head, making his way towards the other side of the clubhouse.
You watch his figure as he moves across the room, stopping to make small talk with a man, shaking his head before joining his brothers at a small table on the restaurant side of the clubhouse, picking up his menu and browsing the food selection.
You smile to yourself and go back to stacking glasses.
As youâre transferring a new stack of clean glasses to the cooler under the bar, you hear someone call your name from above you.
You stand, rattling off your typical greeting to the new customer.
âSomeone named Luke asked me to give this to you,â he tells you, handing you the same twenty-dollar bill Luke had tried to hand you a few minutes prior.
You pick up the bill as the stranger walks away, looking down at it before raising your head and looking for the curly headed culprit.
You meet Lukeâs eye, raising a brow at him while lifting the paper money, pointing at it.
Luke shrugs his shoulders and grins from across the room.
Months later, when youâre attending your first ever Devils game in support of your newly titled boyfriend, you watch him skate out on the ice for warm ups, making a bee-line to the seat he provided for you.
He looks at you in his Jersey, a sight he pictured from the moment he first saw you on the golf course last summer, wondering how he managed to impress the pretty cart girl he embarrassed himself with, what feels like so long ago.
Your smile took up your entire face as you waved at him, excited to finally see him play in person. He smiles back, pointing down to the ground, asking if you wanted a puck.
You nodded your head yes, watching him pick up a puck and take the cover off of a small cut out in the plexiglass separating the two of you.
When he slides the puck through the hand sized hole, you grab onto his glove, replacing the puck with a piece of paper before pushing his hand back towards him.
He looks down at his hand, confusion written all over his face. He opens his glove, looking down at his hand, his head snapping up to look at you once he realizes what you had done.
âThereâs your tip, hot shot!â you shout at him through the glass, smiling in amusement, seeing the same twenty-dollar bill from the first day you met him resting in his red glove, never imagining that the nervous, bumbling boy sitting in front of you at the bar that day would make you feel like the luckiest girl in all of Michigan, and now New Jersey.

You werenât much of a warrior. You had been raised the way a princess should have been. Well, thatâs what your mother told you. However, when two days had passed since Aemond and Aegon had left to confront Rhanerya, and everyone refused to tell you what was happening you decided to get the hell out of there on your dragon.
Maybe youâd end up in Essos and sell a dragon egg for a home. Maybe even Dorne. You could try throw yourself on their mercy. After all, their ambassadors had always seemed to enjoy your company. However, all your plans soon crumbled when you accidentally flew into what youâd assumed to be an empty clearing.
Youâd landed in a small field and had quickly tried to âborrowâ an apple from a local farm when you felt a strong grip on your arm and a sharp blade on your neck. So cold it had to be Valyrian steel. âAnd who do we have here?â you recognised Jaceâs voice clearly. âDidnât your mother ever tell you pretty girls shouldnât go about dawdling?â
-
The stone floors bruised your knees each time you knelt to pray but you didnât complain or even wince at the pain. Youâd counted the days youâd been here by etching marks in the stone with the corner of your Seven-star necklace your mother had given you. 27 days so far. Each morning you prayed. Well, what you thought was morning. Then each afternoon then evening. Each time to a different member of the seven. Even the stranger since perhaps the god of death was the one you truly needed right now.
âMy lady,â a sing song voice called out, âLunch is ready,â Jace said as he approached your cell with his usual grin. He didnât come every day but when he did it only seemed to add to your punishment. âI made sure to pick you the freshest apple,â he crouched down, holding it out to you.
You kept your eyes on the ground as you tried to finish your prayer, âCâmon now. Theyâre clearly not listening to you,â he mocked, sitting down the tray in front of the bars to your cell.
Still, you ignored him as you wrapped them up. Jace sighed and just as you finished your prayers he stood, taking the tray with him. âWhere are you going?â you called, moving to stand on your feet and grabbing the bars, âThatâs my food,â
âNo this is my food,â he said, as if he was calling the sky blue, âAnd you never took it,â
âI was praying!â
âNot fast enough,â he teased. âMaybe next time youâll remember to acknowledge the heir to Westeros,â he said as he turned to leave.
âMy brothers not here,â you mumbled, turning around to go take your place on the wooden bench they called a bed.
The wine cup clattered against the wall, missing your head by only an inch. You span on your heels to confront him, but the only trace was your food dropped on the ground in a head and the apple slowly rolling towards your cell.
It stopped just out of armâs length of the bars as if the gods really were mocking you. It took you laying on the ground, stretching out the tips of your fingernails to manage to roll it closer so you could grab it. You consoled yourself knowing he never came twice in one day.
Yet this time he did.
Jace arrived with a meal so nice looking it almost reminded you of what you used to eat. There was even a whole chicken leg on it. when he saw the apple core in the corner of your cell Jace couldnât help but laugh. âHere,â he said, reaching it out for you to try manoeuvre through the bars when he suddenly pulled it back, âArenât you going to thank your prince?â
âThank you,â you glared, reaching your hand out.
Jace just smirked, âThank you what?â
âThank you, dear nephew,â you offered with a fake smile.
âSay it. say that I am the true heir, a true prince, and I will be most obliged to give you this chicken leg. Straight from the queens table,â he said, showing it to you once more just to rub it in.
You could feel your stomach rumble, but you couldnât say it. not after all this time. Not after all the battles. Not for a chicken leg. âMy mother isnât here,â you said through gritted teeth.
Jace reached through the bars, grabbing your neck before you could react. His grasp was tight but despite his fingers digging into your skin you werenât afraid, âI can only be so patient,â he warned before letting you go. He turned to leave, taking the food with him, âbesides, who said your mother is even alive?â he mocked before slamming the door shut behind him.
The stalemate continued for another day and a half and suddenly you were regretting not rationing the apple. At least the guards had kept your water jug topped up, but you didnât want to risk that being taken too.
âI have a new deal,â Jace said, walking in empty handed.
âWhereâs my food?â you said, not even standing from where you sat on your bed.
âThatâs not very polite,â Jace tutted, leaning against the bars, âHow would you like to get out of here?â you couldnât help your eyes widening at the idea. Something Jace seemed to revel in. he unlocked your cell and despite wanting to run you sat still as he closed the door behind him. âCome here. Let me get a closer look at you,â
You wanted to slap him but instead you stood up and slowly crossed the floor while Jaceâs eyes scanned your frame. âStill so beautiful,â he mumbled before he finally brought his eyes back to yours as your cheeks burned, âI have a new proposal for you,â he said, reaching to stroke your cheek. He was gentle but you still flinched at his touch.
He stepped closer, moving his hand down till he was toying with your necklace, his eyes not so subtly on your chest, âMarry me,â he said, and you instantly grimaced at his words, âBe my wife and I will let you free,â
âI wouldnât be free,â you snapped, âIâd be the wife of a bastard, a nobody, a waste of space- âyou began to spit your venom at him only to be cut off by his tight grasp around your neck.
âI wouldnât be so hasty if I was you,â he warned, âWhat Iâm offering is generous. You should hear what Daemon had planned for you,â he dropped his grip and you instantly stepped back, trying to recatch your breath.
Jace slowly began to circle you, eyeing you up from every angle as you silently thought over his offer when suddenly a thought popped into your head, âWhatâs in it for you? Last time I checked you already had a betrothed,â
âAlliances can change, we both know thatâ he drawled, his chest pressed against your back while his hand grazed your hip. Not mine, you thought, but you stayed silent instead. âBesides I need a wife. Someone to show off in court,â his hand trailed up from your hip to your waist making you shudder through the thin dress theyâd gave you, âSomeone to bear children. Someone to warm my bed,â he said, his lips pressed against your ear.
His hand went to move to your front, but you grabbed his wrist before he could touch anything, âIâd rather die,â you spat.
Jace grabbed your hips, spinning you around and pulling you flush against his chest, âThat can be arranged,â he warned but he still wore his teasing smirk, âYou think youâd survive here without me? A pretty young things like yourself in nothing but her night dress roaming around court, think of the scandals. Gods help you if you even make it out the castle. What do you think the small folk would do with a princess like you?â
âPerhaps theyâd save me. If they believed in the true king,â you said, trying to hold firm but feeling yourself shake.
He chuckled under his breath, âThere is only a queen. Câmon, I canât be that bad surely. You saying youâve never thought about it?â he said, his hand moving down to your ass, his lips moving to your ear, âIts not just the gods who know your dirty little secrets,â he whispered, his hot breath fanning your neck.
âI want my dragon back,â you said suddenly making Jace lift his head from where heâd been dragging his lips across your neck, âIf Iâm to be your wife,â
âAs soon as your belly swells with my seed,â he said, âAnything else?â
It felt like a trap, but you tried anyway, âAnd separate rooms. I donât want to see you more than I have to,â
He chuckled this time, âThat can be arranged, anything else?â you eyed him carefully before shaking your head no. one child and then you could escape with your dragon. It would take a year, maybe two, and then youâd be free. âGood. I shall have them draw up a treaty. But in the meantime,â he said, grabbing your ass so suddenly you gasped, âI want some kind of reassurance you wonât back out,â
âAnd whatâs that?â you asked through gritted teeth.
âI want to fuck you,â he said making the words dry up in your throat, âAnd if I didnât know any better id say you wanted me too,â
âAnd if I say no?â you asked.
Jace dropped his grip, but a smirk fell on his lips as he began to walk away. âThen no deal,â he said, reaching for the door.
âWait!â you called, reaching out to grab his arm. Jace turned his gaze back to you with a knowing smirk, âI suppose if you are to be my husband. The gods, theyâd understand,â you said, trying to rationalise it all.
Jace moved closer to you till his chest was flush against yours, âIâm sure theyâd understand after all,â he said, pushing the hair out of your face, âWho could blame you for wanting some pleasure in your life?â he said, his hand trailing down till he grabbed your tit, squeezing it softly, âWhy would something that feels so good be so wrong?â he whispered in your ear, his hand traveling lower to your thighs, toying with the hem of his dress.
His lips moved to kiss down your jaw, across your neck till he was kissing your undiscovered sweet spot making you moan softly. His arms moved to slip around your waist, pulling you somehow closer to him as your hands rested on his shoulders. You gasped when he squeezed your ass and winced at the quick slap, he gave it before his hands moved to the hem of your dress.
The cold air rushed over your frame, making your nipples harden as Jace pulled the dress over your head in one swoop. The only thing to cover you was your necklace but right now that felt even worse. Jaceâs eyes travelled your frame, soaking up every inch, âThe gods have blessed me with you,â he murmured.
âYou do not know the gods,â you glared but Jace just chuckled as his hands went to cup your tits, stroking his thumbs over your perked nipples making you whimper.
âPerhaps you donât either,â he said as he led you by your hips to your bed. He sat on it, his hands resting on your hips as he pulled you into his lap.
His lips moved to your collarbones, kissing and nipping at the soft skin. Your brain told you to push him away, but a strange feeling was overcoming your body as his hands moved to your hips. You could feel a hard bulge under his trousers as he began to move your hips, pushing your core onto his clothed cock. You moaned at the friction, his bulge rubbing perfectly against your clit sending shock waves up your body.
Soon you felt your hips begin to buck and move of their own accord. You felt his smirk against your skin as his hands moved to your tits. You gasped when he pinched your nipples, rolling them between his fingers making you moan. âOh god,â you couldnât help the moan that slipped out when he took one into his mouth, sucking on the perked bud.
You werenât sure what had come over you, but you felt a knot tightening in your stomach, your moans growing louder as you took the gods in vain at the top of your lungs. You felt your peak hit you like a boulder before you slumped into Jaceâs chest.
He moved to kiss your cheek with a chuckle. âNot even fucked you yet and look at you,â Jace said, slipping his hand down to rub against your sensitive core making your body lurch, âSo wet for me,â he praised, his hand moving to unlace his trousers. âCanât wait to see what my cock does to you,â
Before you could protest you felt his tip pressing into your entrance. You gasped, your hands moving to grab his shoulders, âAw,â Jace pouted, âDoes it hurt?â he mocked, pushing you down further, âToo fucking bad,â he practically growled as he used your hips to push you all the way down.
You almost screamed at the feeling, as if you were being split in half but Jace groaned, throwing his head back against the wall as you felt his cock twitch inside you, âFuck youâre so tight,â he praised, giving you a moment to adjust. Your hips betrayed you again, moving without your mind thinking making him chuckle.
âSuch a desperate little thing,â Jace mocked, grabbing your jaw as you tried to move away. His thumb ran over your bottom lip before using it to pry your mouth open, resting it on your tongue, âGood girl,â he praised, his free hand moving your hips.
âFuck,â you gasped as you felt him hit all the right spots. You gave up trying to resit as your hips began to grind onto his cock.
Jaceâs hands moved to your hair, grabbing it suddenly and pulling it back so he could have full access to your neck. You were sure by the way he kissed it there would be marks tomorrow but that didnât matter now. Your hands went to his hair, tugging it softly making him growl against your skin.
His free hand went to your ass, grabbing it tightly before suddenly leaving stinging slaps against the soft flesh. You could feel your second peak fast approaching and when Jace moved to run quick circles against your sensitive bundle of nerves you felt your cunt squeeze around him as it came crashing down again.
âFuck,â Jace mumbled, a stream of profanity tumbling from his lips as his hands moved to your hips so he could fuck you through your orgasm, âYou feel so good,â he praised, resting his head in the crook of your neck.
You felt yourself coming down from your high and his movements began to slow, âDonât stop Jace. Please gods donât stop,â you began to beg, and you could feel his smirk.
âBegging suits you,â he teased, grabbing your jaw so he could make you face him, âYou look so good right now. So drunk on my cock. Is that it?â
âYes,â you whined, âI need you please,â
âAw my poor baby,â he teased, âSo desperate for her king,â
âYes,â you werenât even thinking any longer, and a spark ignited behind his eyes, âNeed you. Want you my king,â you moaned.
Jace grabbed your hips tightly, standing suddenly before turning as you back slammed against the wall. You winced until you felt his hips begin to snap up against yours. Your arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him tight against you. This new angle had him hitting newer spots that had your legs wrapping tight around him.
âSo good,â Jace mumbled against your skin as you felt a third orgasm approaching, âMy perfect little wife,â his words sent you tumbling over the edge.
Jace couldnât resist anymore as your cunt squeezed around his cock and with a couple more pumps, he began to spill his seed. His thrusts became slow as he rode out his own peak, fucking his seed deep inside you. You were both panting as he pulled out, his forehead resting against yours as your feet finally hit the ground again.
âI always knew you had a dark side in you,â Jace chuckled as he pulled away.
âTell anyone and Iâll kill you in your sleep, husband,â you threatened but the last word made him smile. Maybe this was a good trade after all.
