They crossed through the eluvian, and when he was certain they'd all made it through, Solas left the company without a word. He passed through the gardens, but did not go to the rotunda. Instead, he descended the winding stairs into the bowels of Skyhold. Rats and roaches skittered away with each step, and even the cobwebs seemed to part before him. This fortress knew his feet, and it remembered this grief all too well.

The wind whistled through the crumbling stone of the dungeon as he walked through. The rusted iron gates creaked in their eroded hinges. The old braziers held no light, not with the biting chill of the relentless air and the bitter cold waterfall that plunged into the icy lake below.

Solas sat at the edge of the precarious wooden scaffolding, an abandoned attempt to restore this part of the fortress. He watched the water crash into the ice below, but he saw nothing.

The Temple of Mythal had not deserved the scars of Corypheus' Blighted invasion. It had once been so grand, a place of finality. Yet despite its cracked jade marble, shimmering mosaics, and buffed golden statues, the Temple was a tomb for the last of his people, and it ushered in the end of this world. Of these people. With the memories in the Well, the Inquisition at last had a path to victory. A final path. They would succeed, or die trying. One way or another, this was about to be over.

His head hit the stone wall behind him with a thud. The end. A year ago Solas would have welcomed it. His orb would be returned, his power restored, and he could finally finish what he started a millennia ago. But now?

Beneath the sound of the rushing water, he did not hear her approach. Beneath the weight of his regret, he did not see her. He finally felt the warmth of her at his side as she crumpled to the ground next to him. This had been no easier for her, he imagined, given the truth of Corypheus' immortality. Using the Blight poisoning the blood of any Warden, Corypheus would be reborn until they slayed his dragon.

Solas couldn't think of anything to say to ease her mind, because his own was a cacophony of guilt.

He felt the weight of her head as it lowered onto his slumped shoulder. He felt her own shaking sigh mingling with his. He laid his head atop hers, the disheveled curls of her hair against his cheek. Tears pricked at his eyes and twisted his heart. She was real, and she would die because of him. They all would - his Inquisitor. Varric. Cassandra. And he would light that spark of doom regardless.

"Ir abelas, da'len," Solas whispered, but the roar of the water swallowed the sound of his grief.
