I am broke. I need healthcare. My therapist told me to sign up for Medicaid until the industry gets moving and I get my days in to join the union. I told her that would be immoral because I have an advanced degree but that I would use the healthcare exchange and impute myself with a modest salary and pay a fair amount for healthcare.

Turns out you aren’t allowed to apply for healthcare subsidies unless Equifax, a CREDIT REPORTING BUREAU, is satisfied you are who you say you are. Forty five minutes and three phone calls where I gave them all of my most private PPI and I was informed I could not apply for healthcare subsidies because they could not verify my identity. And when I asked what the problem was, I was informed I could not be told “for security purposes.” When I asked how to fix it, I was told to TRY AGAIN NEXT YEAR.

Guess who has Medicaid now? I paid my fucking taxes. I did the socially responsible thing. I don’t need this bullshit from the government. What I need is access to mental healthcare and birth control.

It is around 3 PM in Houston, Texas. Today has been dreary, and the heavy rain remains a constant reminder of that. You are watching television in your apartment, or listening to the radio in your car, or shopping in the supermarket - just completing another mundane part of your daily routine. As you go through the motions almost as if you are on autopilot, you are startled by a blaring siren and the words EMERGENCY ALERT. You freeze in your tracks and focus all of your attention on this broadcast. If you are in public, those around you stop to listen as well. You look around, and watch faces morph into fear as the United States issues an order for citizens to shelter in place. And as the broadcast concludes, you think to yourself "This is it. The apocalypse, it's really happening." It does not take long for panic to ensue within the city. Those unfortunate enough to have been outside during the broadcast flea for their homes.
