In Icelandic folklore Jólakötturinn, the Yule Cat, comes to eat those who do not wear their new clothes for Christmas. In this illustration, you can see somebody did not put on their new Christmas sweater. Or perhaps even more unfortunately, no one got them one!
Jólakötturinn is huge, as big as if not bigger than a house, and only comes around for Christmas. Some say Jólakötturr (as sometimes shortened) is the pet of the a family of trolls known as the Yule Lads who are Santa’s helpers in Iceland. It’s also said that he has a particular taste for ungrateful children.
The legend of the Jólakötturinn was not written down for publishing until the early 19th century. At first a more obscure countryside myth, the lore of Yule Cat has only grown since and is now internationally known and celebrated. It is theorized the practical purpose of this myth may have been to aid in wool production in earlier seasons of the year which children took part in helping with.

I think I finally found a solution to a lot of my problems with posting the cards each year. Raspberry Pi might be coming to the rescue if I can get two APIs set up exactly like I want. Can't find a service that does what you want? Make your own!

Christmas Dinner
weird fiction inspired by the above Victorian Christmas card
Mr. Weaver had begun to pale halfway through Christmas dinner. His sides expanding with more than the volume of an excellent meal heartily eaten. He'd kept widening and widening until he was perfectly round and flat. Lovely blue filigree appeared along his edges, swirling in lacy patterns. Before the clock struck midnight, he'd turned into a plate.
Mr. Weaver's own transformation had escaped his notice because he was thoroughly engrossed in watching Mrs. Weaver eat her Christmas pudding. She'd served herself an indulgent helping of the fruity desert, smothered with a topping of brandy butter. With each bite she'd taken on a lustrous molasses tint. The smell of sweet and brandy rolled off her increasingly spherical form.
Seeing that his wife had become a Christmas pudding, Mr. Weaver plucked a sprig of holly from the table centerpiece and placed it on the crown of her head.
"Should we retire for the night?" he asked his beloved.
Mrs. Weaver glanced at their children. The two youngest were dessert plates. They were competing to see who could roll the furtherest on their thin, rounded edges. The two teenagers were tottering bottles of Christmas wine, belching alcoholic bubbles at each other. They must have stolen a glass or two when she and Mr. Weaver weren't looking.
She thought what a shock old St. Nick would have if he came down their chimney to find toys and games unnecessary. Their house no longer had no use for anything but cutlery and tableware.
Mr. Weaver was still waiting for her answer. His lovely porcelain face was shaped into a lascivious expression.
"Lead the way," she said, merrily following him up the stairs.

The infamous “Build Your Own Santa Claus” video aired 36 years ago today on Edmonton, Canada community television. In the decades since, the urban legends surrounding the video have been colloquially adopted by locals as a Boxing Day wish for those who didn’t have the Christmas they were hoping for. So if you’re feeling blue today, just remember the hope expressed in this classic clip, and as they say in Edmonton, “you can always build your own Santa eh?”

This year's Yule themed coloring page features the giant Icelandic Yule Cat Jólaköttur who will stalk you as a snack you if you don't wear your new Christmas clothes!
All past coloring pages are here for my Sugar Guardians at any time they come and go, including past Yule designs. In years before I've drawn up sapphic Krampus, Mari Lwyd, and a goth Yule wreath.
Relax around this dark solstice with some creativity putting your own color in and even drawing in your own details to accompany my own linework. Print out to hang on the fridge to show off some strange seasonal spirit or even on your Yule tree if you dare. A great replacement for poisonous mistletoe!
