note to my future and past self: you didn't "waste" an idea by using it before you googled what mixing was- just do the idea again, no-one can stop you. motivation in recognising that the idea was great and now you have more tools to do it justice with
seek excellence in your art, never stop looking for ways to improve, but know that there is nothing you'll learn that will make your previous art a waste. there is no prerequisite knowledge besides basic literacy of your materials and inquisitive taste. you will never learn something and wish you'd known it already before you made a piece of art. you will always hate your work after it turns a couple years old, but you too will always come to cherish it again.

Laamaa - November Blues
Another WeeklyBeats alumni killing it lately, Laamaa has made something truly beautiful here. This track is just so damn chilled and lush. Made on Furnace Tracker using Megadrive chip emu, it almost sound too good! -Kris

Happy to say not only did I complete weeklybeats2018 (write 1 song a week for each week of the year) but I also managed to make a lil video clip for each one. Although the videos weren't necessarily in the same time constraints, I wanted to get better at video editing across the year. I still have no idea what I'm doing, but I know a few more keyboard shortcuts now. Anyway, here's a hypercut, one song/video per second. If you want to watch the clip for each, I unfortunately got behind in reblogging them here in Tumblrland, but they are all on my Instagram here.

My first Weekly Beats recording of the year, “Three Clock Problem,” is a simple drone (yeah, yeah, arguably beat-less) I put together in VCV Rack 2. A series of quantized pitches are sent through a reverb that has a wide array of controls. Rather than one consistent clock, there are three clocks, one at a time, that are triggering the quantizing, including whether or not it’s even running. Due to the reverb’s generous spaciousness, there’s never a gap. It’s quite simple. The foundation of this originated from a patch by Omri Cohen. Recorded in Audio Hijack from the system sounds, with the fade out introduced in Audition. More at disquiet.com/wb2022-01.

One new song a week. Week 29: Midnight Car Chase ▫️ Started with loading a sample I created a few weeks back into Samplr. Made 5 other stems in Samplr with other samples already on file. Then bounced into Pro Tools, mixed/fx/added drums... Final touch was remembering the voicemail I received recently and bounced in, stretched, quantised, booyah! Peace and piglets. ▫️ #weeklybeats #musicproduction #samplr #sampling #protools #sounddesign #moon #cube #design #mooncubedesign

DonutShoes - Little Bit Louder
M8 Tracker beats via the most wholesome place on the internet - weeklybeats! 256 beatmakers are still going strong over there for the 2024 round (me included!) and DonutShoes who just knocked this one all the way out of the park - those low sample rate breaks and rave stabs really hit the spot. Respect!

Progress thus far.  I know we’re not even in March yet but I’m really glad I decided to experiment and try my hand at this whole Weekly Beats thing.  It’s been fun doing whatever the fuck I want without worrying about staying within a certain genre.  I’ve also been putting my 2nd grade (even that’s pushing it) photoshop skills for song “art” for V A P O R W A F F L E, Awkward Prom Dance & Lofi Slophop Radio.
