comfy-vember week 2 prompt: verbal affirmation and loving gaze

“So, Cade, what’s it like to be the prince’s right-hand man?” Magnolia asked.

Her brother refrained from answering a moment, instead watching as she carefully set a seedling into the hole she’d dug. He often came to the garden to visit his sister. Prince Eric had said he could see his sister as often as he wanted, and since she worked as assistant to the palace gardener, it didn’t take too long to pop in and make sure she was okay. Though Cade often stayed longer than he should….

“It’s fine, I suppose. The prince is not at all how I expected, though,” he finally responded.

“Oh? How so?”

“At first, he wouldn’t say a word to me, then one day he’s asking what I want to do, telling me to call him by his first name, and wanting to know all about me. He’s practically a chatterbox now.” 

Magnolia laughed. “Well, Cade, you do have that effect on people.”

Cade scowled. “What effect?”

“People are drawn to you. You’re earnest, positive, and kind, and those characteristics draw people to you and make them want to open up to you. Even the prince, it would seem.”

Cade sighed. “I don’t know about that. I get the feeling he was just lonely, and since he had no one else, he chose to talk to me.”

“Do you not like talking with him?” Magnolia asked. She started digging another hole, finished with planting the first seedling.

“I don’t dislike talking with him. He’s not the proud, selfish royal I thought he would be, and it is kind of fun to hear about what he’s been reading or to talk about my carvings. But…something is off with him. He’s terrified of seeing people get hurt, even if it’s just a little scratch. Why, yesterday I nicked myself just slightly and he went into a full-blown panic. There was only one drop of blood, but he brought a whole pile of bandages.”

Magnolia chuckled lightly, “He sounds like a nice person to me.”

“I guess so,” Cade muttered. “But I have a feeling that he’s hiding something. He’s hurting deep inside, but he won’t say a word about it. I just see it in his eyes.”

Magnolia paused her digging and looked up. Cade was frowning deeply, his eyes locked on the ground with the troubled gaze that reminded her so much of how father would look when one of the children was sick.

“You think it has something to do with those rumors about the prince? How he disappeared for seven years?” she asked softly.

Cade glanced at her. It was forbidden to speak of the rumors, yet everyone in town knew them. Rumors that the prince had been kidnapped or sent away when he was only 10, and that he had not returned to the palace until only a few months ago. Rumors that he was really an illegitimate son or was involved in some other scandal. Why else would the king have appointed his younger son to be heir to the throne instead of Prince Eric, the firstborn?

“Whatever happened during those seven years deeply affected him, and not in a good way. And to be honest, I’m not sure if I want to know. I’m not sure if I want to get any more involved with him,” Cade finally said.

“But you are involved now,” Magnolia said, gazing earnestly into her brother’s eyes. “For all your hesitance, you do want to help him, don’t you?”

Cade bit his lip. “Yes…. I want to help Eric overcome his fear. I want to see him smile, see him enjoy life, see him be free. I want to see what he could become.”

Magnolia smiled and gazed lovingly at her brother. “And I’m sure you will help him, Cade. Because that’s who you are—the kind of person who can make others thrive.”

Cade smiled back at her. “Just like you make your plants thrive, huh?"

She laughed. "Indeed. In our own ways, we're both gardeners."

hey! this is chance & here’s week 2's prompt. when you write or create an oc, do you like to reference elements from your life? if yes, name a few. if no, why not?

My OCs are basically pieces of me that I biopsy and put under a microscope to see how they grow. Nicolette in particular is a product of freshman year untreated depression (don't worry, I got treatment!) Haira and Aure's friendship/sisterhood is a direct tie in to my feelings for my own sister. My OC's are my children, my foils, my idiots and myself. Writing and making art are how I make sense of the world in a way that's just far enough from my heart to be comfortable.
