Atomic Samurai and his disciples are my favorite characters. I adore them.

But I have to admit something super sadistic about myself.

Up until recently, I've very much been looking forward to the scene where Garou approaches the unconscious disciples despite Kamikaze's pleading, stomps on Iaian's face, and then mocks AS for not being able to do anything about it.

Gross, right? What is wrong with me?

But I had two good reasons that I was looking forward to this scene:

1. It's the most insight we see to Kamikaze's personality in the webcomic. Like @weebianplebeian says, at this point in the webcomic the worst we've seen Atomic Samurai go through is getting his sword broken and his pride hurt by Black Sperm. But seeing his students lying battered, beaten, unconscious, unable to fight back? And then some shitty teen comes up and steps on his favorite student's face anyway? And he's not fast enough to stop it? And then said shitty teen CALLS HIM OUT ON IT? That BREAKS him. He is visible shook. It strips away what few layers of pride he has remaining at this point and exposes his greatest fear: That he has failed his students. That it doesn't even matter if he's the world's greatest swordsman if he can't even protect them. (And then Iaian, bless him, wakes up and offers his master his sword anyway! ...Doesn't work out so well, but it's still sweet.)

2. I've never fully forgiven Iaian for calling Okamaitachi and Bushidrill his subordinates in Chapter 69

In my view, that exchange with Garou, painful as it was, was essential in giving AS some actual character.

But with the completely different direction that the manga has gone, we now have the addition of the Council of Swordsmasters. Who are arguably just as dear to Kamikaze as his disciples, though in a different way--the Council are not his charges, but his comrades, friends, and in Nichirin's case apparently his former master. Kamikaze went to them requesting assistance in defeating the Monster Association, only to learn that one of them has already fallen prey to the MA, and he's forced to kill Haragiri by his own hand. But it's fine, right, because Haragiri was obviously the biggest asshole of the group. And the rest of his buddies show up to the battlefield to assist him in fighting the cadres, and avenge their comrade who succumbed to the side of the MA. And they fight! And it is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!

...until they die horrible deaths. Literally melted by acid. What a way to go. And to top it off, two of them have sacrificed themselves to save Kamikaze, Iaian, and Spring Mustachio. Good luck not feeling guilty over that.

Let's recap. At this point in the MANGA, here's what Kamikaze has gone through:

-Forced to kill his friend who's been monsterified -Beat up and mocked by Black Sperm -A very naked Puri Puri Prisoner landing on him -Two of his disciples unconscious -The other disciple hanging in there but nearly dying in front of him multiple times -The remaining three members of the Council of Swordsmasters dying painfully in front of him -Possible survivor's guilt (This list is not even considering that the disciples have their own separate trauma from seeing Captain Tongara eviscerated by ENW!)

Holy hell, ONE/Murata. You've out-sadisted me. I've gone from gleefully chanting "Face stomp! Face stomp!" every time Iaian does something slightly out of line to quietly rocking back and forth in a corner because my poor samurai babies have gone through ENOUGH.

I just want to reblog this and stress this: Kamikaze lost his entire squad. He didn’t lose 20% of his squad. He didn’t even lose 50%. He lost his whole squad.

All of the S-Class heroes (and the protection squad) are having quite possibly the worst day of their lives. Darkshine and Tatsumaki are getting their shit rocked for the first time ever. Genos is once again getting his shit rocked. Bang just lost a shirt and the sanity of his former student. CE had to see his surrogate father get turned into giblets, and so on and so forth. Its just not a good day to be a hero right now.

But Kamikaze? I'd arguably say he's getting the worst of it right now.

webcomic spoilers ahead:

In the original flow of the webcomic, BS beats him up, he loses his sword, gets talked down to by a teenager and his students also get beat up and that's about it.

In Ch. 69 of the manga we got introduced to the Council of Swordsmasters, a group that’s shown to be pretty close with AS.

Not only has AS had to put down his fellow swordsmaster in the first chapter they were introduced (Haragiri), but now he’s had to see the last three be killed in horrible ways. Two of his best disciples are knocked unconscious, and the last one is going to have a foot smooshed on his face. Can you imagine the guilt he’s going to feel when this is all over? Mind you it’s implied that it took a bit of convincing from his students to let them fight on their own.

ONE created the Council of Swordsmasters to make AS and his fans suffer.
