I absolutely HATE how Demeter is so often villianized in the story of Hades and Persephone. Especially in this episode of Lore Olympus, like what is the point of re-writing a myth about a girl being kidnapped, held hostage and her mother grieving over her into this!? Like what's the message here....

I get that it's a retelling and doesn't have to be accurate but it still rubbs weirdly when in comparison, if that makes sense?

Lore Olympus is like if you put Greek Mythology in a pan, mixed it with your average Melanie Martinez songs, 13 Reasons Why, Euphoria, Twilight, and Riverdale; then burn it in the Wattpad Baker 1000, and try to cover up the absolute burnt monstrosity with one of those artificial pink frosting that tastes like battery acid and piss.

it's not even funny how out of place LO looks alongside all the other Eisner nominees, and YES I took the example panel straight from the episode that was linked on the 2024 nominations list-

like i'm not joking when i say that the eisners risk losing every shred of its credibility in the webcomics category if it awards LO for the third year in a row, they don't even fucking compare

YOU’RE TELLING ME LORE OLYMPUS WON THE EISNER FOR A THIRD YEAR???

The comic where the author submitted the series finale 20 minutes before it was set to release?

The comic where the R4pist and main villain who’s been built up for 3 seasons gets community service for committing several heinous crimes?

The comic where a grown man lusts after a sheltered 19 year old and we’re expected to think it’s the “healthiest relationship ever”, despite said 19 year old literally having a breakdown that she doesnt know anything about herself because of her marriage?

The comic that disrespects greek myth and culture as a whole; where characters are made fun of for wearing Ancient Greek fashion and our GREEK gods have a christian wedding instead of the beautiful traditions of Greek marriage?

The comic that claims to be feminist but ultimately bastardizes the tale of Demeter and Persephone, making Demeter an “overbearing mom” (although she’s the most logical in the comic) and just someone who wants to ruin the “beautiful marriage” of Hades and Persephone

The comic that shares way too many parallels from the 1997 film Lolita?

The comic where the male love interest and the male antagonist really share no differences aside from color palette?

The comic where the view count has been dipping under the 100k’s since the beginning of season 3?

The comic that ended with a terribly choreographed fight and nuclear family photo excluding both of Hades and Persephone’s adopted children, which left both fans and antis extremely disappointed?

You’re telling me that people went out of their way to vote for a comic that has beyond disappointed them and has always been plagued with terrible writing, instead of the beautiful art and personability of Asturias: The Origin of a Flag, or the quirky style of Unfamiliar? This is not fair voting. This is the result of Webtoon wanting to keep their poster child alive for a few more months after its finale, because once Lore Olympus finally fades away, their western market will die, which will kill their recent investment in the market.

I, for one, cannot wait to watch them fall on their face for continuing this damned comic.

The first day of spring 🌷🌼🌷

(This is part of a Lore Olympus redesign/reimagining series I’m doing)

This is Persephone when she was relatively young, a few hundred years old, before she was queen. She's getting ready to bring spring to the mortal realm. Flowers bloom behind her where she's walked.

There are no seasons yet really, not until she becomes queen and has to leave the mortal realm each year. But there are natural lulls wear the mortal realm is not as bountiful, so for now her job is mostly to restore the fertility of the earth.

She gets green splotches on her skin if she uses her powers a lot. They go away once she rests for a while.

She has spent nearly her whole life in the mortal realm with Demeter. She's visited Olympus a couple times but hardly finds it interesting, she's happy to stay where she is.

Hermes visits regularly and keeps her up to date on what's happening in Olympus and all the other gossip. She begins to be more interested in Olympus when Hermes tells her about the new technology that's been developing (skyscrapers, cars, cellphones??).

She begins visiting Olympus more often. Everything is so different and exciting, and she realizes how much she wants a change.

That's when she meets Hades.

I decided to make Hades stand up and…. Rachel wtf is this?!! She’s literally crotch height and he doesn’t even fit in the frame!!!

I had to crop half of the original panel and move it down just so his head would fit.

objectively speaking the issues with lore olympus were so much bigger than just bad writing or wonky art. lore olympus was a promising but ultimately shallow fanfic, and honestly, no shame in that, we’ve all written stories and tropes that serve as wish fulfillment, more power to the cringe.

it’s that this series got so much money and time spent on it that it did not deserve - and that it really paved the way for other shallow and whitewashed series to become prominent. webtoons has only gotten more predatory towards its creators over the years, and that was helped in part by the success of lore olympus. which wasn’t even spared the same fate! for all the crap we rightfully put on rachel, there is no denying that webtoons squeezed that golden goose until it burst, and the quality suffered as a result.

clickbait sells, and lore was ultimately a flashy clickbait that just kept getting milked. the problem is that made it easier to stomp down on other creators and artists, and it made it easier to profit off of exploited mythology and culture. it’s a bummer ending that just adds on.
