Jae took a deep breath in, opening his eyes to look blearily around him. A powerful haze had settled over his body, the kind of haze that only comes from falling asleep on an airplane. The odd weightless feeling as the plane began its descent. Distantly he could pick up the sound of the pilot’s voice over the intercom muttering something about being welcomed to California.

He groaned, sitting up from where he’d melted into his seat, poking blindly at his phone screen to pause the podcast autoplaying in his ears. He took off his headphones, the sound of rushing wind outside and the constant hiss of air conditioning assaulting his senses. He closed his eyes against the harsh sunlight pouring through the tiny window to his left, going so far as to cover them with his hand, half-ready to pop his earbuds back in just to block out everything around him.

Why did sleeping on a plane always have this effect? He felt high, or hungover, and he knew for a fact he was neither. He would have never made it through TSA with alcohol, or weed. Maybe once he got picked up he could grab some edibles or something.

Thinking of his friends coming to get him from the airport, he was suddenly reminded of the whole reason for his trip.

“We’re roadtripping!” Sunny cheered, voice sing-song as she slid her arms over Jade’s shoulders from behind. They both looked up at him, Sunny’s bright perfect smile next to Jade’s smug smirk as she was hugged, he felt a distant gnawing dread in his side.

“Cool.” He muttered, trying not to look at either of their faces for more than a second at a time.

“My folks are coming too.” Jade added, somehow catching his avoidant gaze with her stone cold glare. “They’re the ones bringing me and Sunny along, I mean. But listen, I know you’ve been pressed for cash, so I wanted to offer the job to you before they ask our regular guy.”

Ouch. He tried to act like that hadn’t hurt as much as it did, laughing it off as he rubbed his hand over his elbow, the tendon beneath his skin catching on the bone, sending a spike of electricity down to his fingertips. “Yeah, I mean, that’d be cool.”

“It’s a tough job though. They’ve got a ton of animals. Not the easy kind. You won’t be able to just sit around all day on your phone. They need like, actual attention.”

He schooled his expression before it could fall into a comfortable biting glare at that. Sunny’s smile turned sharp, her eyes like daggers as they sank into him. “Yeah.” He laughed again. “Yeah, I know. You’re right.”

“But! If you’re up for something like that, it’s good money. Like, great money for you. The other guy makes like, five grand for trips over six months like this.”

“Why isn’t he doing it this time?” He lowered his gaze at her, tone scrutinizing. He didn’t want to seem too eager. It was no secret to anyone that Sunny was much, much, much-much-much much wealthier than either he or Jade were, but even then, Jade was still head and shoulders above him. Him.

Jade’s family was the subtle kind of wealthy. While Sunny was constantly flaunting new clothes, new hair, new toys and bags and… whatever it is girls buy with all their money, Jade wore thrifted jeans, she smoked, she listened to the kind of music he did, and she talked the way he talked. But her parents owned their own animal sanctuary on their own property that apparently raked in a shit-ton of money in it’s on season each year.

That was the limit of his knowledge on the topic, but he had a sneaking suspicion that Jade’s mom was really into the Stockmarket from what little he’d seen and heard about her. Animal Sanctuary money was good, but it wasn’t Audi money. It wasn’t ‘six-month-trip-through-europe’ money. They definitely had something else going on. But that wasn’t his business.

“Like I said, I wanted to ask you since you’ve been in a bind.” Her smile widened slightly. He couldn’t tell if she was trying to be genuine, or twisting the knife harder. “So, what do you think?”

The plane finally landed in Burbank twenty minutes after his abrupt awakening, and he waited another ten as the more eager passengers butted their way into the hall ahead of him. His thumbs tapped rhythmically against the handle of his backpack, eyes fixed on the raindrop-decorated windows across the isle. He hadn’t noticed it was raining until they’d landed.

By the time he made it to baggage collection he was already exhausted, ready to sleep the entire car ride from the airport to Jade’s parent’s… Sanctuary? That was the word she’d used every time they’d talked about it over text, but was that really it? Or would it be more of a petting zoo? Or like, a rescue? She’d said the animals were wild, not your average dogs and cats. She’d mentioned snakes, but that hadn’t scared him away at the time, though now he was beginning to feel a little uneasy about it.

There were two main parts of the sanctuary that he’d been told about: A reptile house that was closed for the season, all the animals that normally lived in that building were brought to the main house for ease of care during the off months, and then there were the larger enclosures. That’s where they kept… well, he wasn’t completely sure. There had been talk of wolves… maybe? He couldn’t remember, but he was sure he’d find out soon enough. They’d better not have horses… well, five grand was five grand. He could google what he didn’t already know.

The place was out in the middle of nowhere, and that was probably the thing that worried him the most. He’d be spending the next half of his year out there, and the whole time he’d be the only person around for miles. He’d never been out of the city for long, even as a little kid. He wasn’t one for camping or solitary activities out in the woods. Despite outer appearances, he really preferred being around other people, even if he didn’t like interacting most of the time. He far preferred being in a room full of people with headphones on than being completely alone without even the option of talking to someone.

There was one morning when he was a kid, the first time his parents had left him at home by himself. He’d been plenty old enough at the time to be home alone, but even so he’d called them in a panic that evening asking when they were coming home, and if they could leave right then and come back because he couldn’t stand being by himself any longer. Even back then he couldn’t bare that feeling. Hopefully the animals would help fill that void. There was no way he was turning down five grand just because he couldn’t handle being alone for a little while.

“Jae!!”

He turned around, searching for Sunny as he walked down the entrance strip into the main atrium of the airport. That had been hear voice, she and Jade had to be—

A sudden wright on his back told him exactly where she was.

“Off.” He croaked, leaning back to force her to let go of him.

“Hey cruiser.” Jade laughed from somewhere over his shoulder, leaning around to look up at him with the same deadpan smile on her face she always wore. An expression of ‘nothing is interesting, but everything is funny’ that irked him, never knowing what she was thinking. “How was the plane ride?”

“Terrible.” He muttered, following behind the two girls. “I fucking hate planes.”

“Sounds about right.” She replied. “You’re welcome for the tickets, by the way.”

“Yeah. Thanks.” He mumbled shortly, pulling the wooden stake out of his chest and tossing it aside. The reminder that, of course, he couldn’t even afford to come here and work for her parents if it hadn’t been for their overflowing generosity.

As they exited the airport together Jae half expected them to be traveling in some high-line speeder or something equally exotic. It would fit with Jade’s parent’s style, the kind of fancy car men in denial about their fifties wipe with a microfiber cloth and call it a hobby. But as they walked down the rows an rows of stalled and idling vehicles, the headlights of a rusted old red pickup truck lit up as Jade clicked the fob on her keyring.

��This is your ride?” He asked, surprised.

She turned to look at him, one brow arched. “Were you expecting something else?”

“I wasn’t expecting anything.” He mumbled, shaking himself out of his thoughts before stepping off the curb, and tossing his bags in the truck bed.

He stepped around to the passenger side and climbed into the cab with some effort while Sunny hopped in from the driver’s side, taking a seat between him and Jade, who took the wheel. The truck’s engine rumbled under his feet, he’d preemptively taken his headphones out, his phone in his hands as Jade pulled onto the road, and they began their long journey back to the… sanctuary.
