Well, interestingly, while it definitely will go into student loans and other debt for a vast majority, Millennials are STILL hugely philanthropic -- on track to become the most generous generation in history. 84% of Millennials give to charity and at least 70% volunteer. 

You can basically split the Millennial generation into two large wealth segments: those who have family wealth and those who don’t. Those who have family wealth are likely to have smaller student loans, paid off sooner, for several obvious and a couple of non-obvious reasons, but that doesn’t mean that they themselves are being massively philanthropic right now, mainly because their parents tend to control the “family” philanthropy, so any other giving that Millennials in this segment make is from their own income. Once their parents pass, they’ll have access to much more significant wealth and be able to dispose of it in ways they prefer. 

Meanwhile, Millennials with lower wealth and more debt, who also tend to come from a much more diverse background (nonwhite, same-sex parents, blended families, or single parent families) are giving at lower amounts BUT still giving! And they will be able to give at much higher amounts once they’ve put any inheritance they get into that debt and get it paid off, not to mention once they’re no longer shouldering the cost of care/treatment for aging parents. 

Obviously there’s a sub-segment of this of people who are in real poverty, and even a family death isn’t likely to help that, because there will be no inheritance and may be significant expenses. But by and large, nonprofits can expect Millennials from both segments to begin making much larger gifts as their parents die, which is morbid but practical. More important are the implications for current nonprofit behavior: we need to steward them well now, treat them with respect for their giving even if it’s not at the level we’d prefer, and make sure that they’re well-educated about giving once they have more wealth under their control. 

Although I’m also going to make a strong case for connecting with and stewarding GenZ, who tend to be extremely activist and whose passion can and should be supported and channeled into powerful ways to make change. Making a connection with Gen Z now could mean strong relationships with them later when they’re well-situated to give, especially since even Gen Z who don’t come from wealthy backgrounds are poised to be the wealthmakers of tomorrow.

Hitler espoused a virulent form of anti-Semitism that offered German citizens an enemy to rally around. He held Jews responsible for Germany’s military humiliation in World War I and also encouraged the belief that Jews grew wealthy through theft from Aryans. “The robbery part [of Hitler’s decree] is embedded in this ideology that these people are parasites who attach themselves to us, and they live by sucking our blood, and we are entitled to punish them and take it all back,” says Peter Hayes, professor emeritus of history and German at Northwestern University and the author of How Was It Possible? A Holocaust Reader.

What’s more, Nazi ideology held that Jews were particularly wealthy citizens of Germany, despite the reality that the majority of Jewish families fell somewhere in the middle class, Hayes says. Not only would the 1938 edict return wealth to non-Jewish citizens, whom Nazis considered to be the rightful owners, it would also encourage more Jews to leave the country, another of Hitler’s goals at that point. (The decision to pursue the wholesale extermination of Jews, known as the “Final Solution,” wouldn’t come for several more years, in late 1941.)

Following the April 1938 property registry, Jewish citizens faced an increasing number of economic laws that chipped away at their livelihood. They lost allowances and exemptions for having children, and were forced into the highest tax bracket regardless of their income, writes historian Martin Thurau. From there, many Jewish-owned firms were falsely charged with tax evasion going back to the 1920s, on which they were forced to pay arrears.

For those Jews with the means to leave the country, legally emigrating meant relinquishing 50 percent of one’s monetary assets, and then exchanging the rest of the remaining Reichsmarks for the currency of whatever country would be the final destination. “By late 1938, they were allowing Jews to keep only 8 percent of what their Reichsmarks were worth in the foreign country,” Hayes says—which only made it harder to find a safe haven, since the Jewish refugees couldn’t take any of their savings with them.
