The Small Back Room - Maggie's Record Shop (unhinged meta no one asked for, part 1)

I'm going to cover these in two separate posts because there are a lot. This post is going to be dedicated to the artists with multiple covers in Maggie's shop.

*This is all bonus content from The Arrival (2x1).

What is the purpose of the record shop? It's called The Small Back Room, and it's connected to Aziraphale's bookshop. And a small back room seems like a place someone would store their records.

"If I owned a record shop, I'd be more concerned about people breaking in and leaving more records behind." - Nina

And someone left more records behind. Records of "Every Day".

Aziraphale hears Gabriel sing a human song that Aziraphale is unfamiliar with, so he goes to the record shop to ask Maggie, who actually has way too many copies of "Every Day" because of a pub in Edinburgh, the place with the cemetery that has the statue of Gabriel.

There is more to it though. The pub called the Resurrectionist that plays "Every Day" over and over on the jukebox (and somewhere in America John Mulaney is cackling like a madman) now has direct ties with Aziraphale's personal life because they ended up in Maggie's record shop.

The place where they met Elspeth and Wee Morag, Mr. Dalrymple, messed with dead bodies, and where Crowley saved one woman's soul from Hell.

We heard one passage from Aziraphale's diary, and it was about the time he and Crowley went to Edinburgh that started off with them looking at the statue of Gabriel.

We know Aziraphale has more than 600 volumes of personal written history (as of 1827).

Where is he going to store records of his life on Earth? A record shop that no one other than him visits, attached to the building he owns.

The walls lined with record covers that are telling stories. Clues as to where the story is going to take us? Could they be Aziraphale's diaries or other important records Aziraphale has kept for thousands of years?

And is anyone else concerned about "Come on Over to Our Third Floor Apartment" or is that just me? Heaven is the third floor when you look at the button arrangements on the lift. ⬆️⬆️ ⬇️⬇️

Hi! Do you happen to have basic/simple/easy tutorials for editing comic panels to recommend?

i do not actually have one to refer you to, but i’m happy to write some things up! i’m assuming this is just for removing backgrounds and creating icons; if you want a how-to on the way i animate panels, that lives here.

i use photoshop cs6, but the same general principles should work in other editors. also, there are probably easier or faster ways to do the things i do. i like my methods and i’m comfortable with them, but i’d recommend experimenting to find what works best for you.

and... yeah! let's get into it.

step one: finding a panel

i save panels as i’m reading comics. they all live in one PSD file named ��panels,” and i make a new one for each run. anything that seems pretty or thematically resonant gets copied and pasted in there. this way, i don’t have to dig through endless comic issues to find a specific image that stuck with me. i usually save the full page just so the edges are clean and everything is included.

let’s go with this page from birds of prey:

step two: cropping

the way i crop the image depends on two things: what i’m hoping to make, and what the image looks like. here, i’m just doing a basic portrait, and helena is taller than she is wide. that makes it easy; let’s crop it so she takes up most of the frame.

(my preferred ratios are 4x6 for smaller panel edits like this; for banners, i usually do 2x1, but if the framing works better as 3x2, I have done that, too. just feel it out. actual pixel sizes depend on the size of the original image.)

step three: removing the background

this part is, I think, the area with the most room for personal preference. we need to erase the background, and there are a LOT of tools to do this. each one varies depending on what the image itself looks like. there’s the magic selection tool, the eraser, or the lasso or magnetic selection tool.

(i don’t use the lasso or magnet because they’re evil, to me, but they work reasonably well when you have a character on a mostly solid background and art with thick, defined lines. i have no real advice other than that.)

here, we can mix and match some things. i’m going to start by using the magic selection tool to grab all the white or solid colors and remove them with the delete key, like so:

after that, for the more finicky areas, i am a perfectionist and i go in and erase pixels using the eraser tool at 4-5px width. i start by outlining the character, like so:

from there, you can use the lasso tool to select all of the remaining background and delete it. i usually hide the white background layer at this step, too. (i'm also going to color the smoke and the man in the foreground black and redraw the crossbow string with the paintbrush tool. this ain't about him.)

you should end up with something like this:

step four: cleaning the linework

this part is mostly using the layer style stroke and the tool refine edge.

so, because of how selection tools and erasers work, there are a bunch of hidden pixels throughout the image you can’t really see. this drives me absolutely bonkers. at this point, i combine all the layers of the paint i've done so far -- everything except for the transparent background. select the layer with the character — Helena — and apply the layer style stroke, set to “outside” at 3px.

those little black dots are what we're after. there aren't too many right now, because this was a fairly clean edit; sometimes, it looks scary and messy, but that’s okay. the layer style has just outlined all those invisible pixels. i go through and erase them — especially in tight places like corners. for example, this pesky area between strands of hair:

once you’ve erased all of those pixels and cleaned up the image, you can go back into the stroke layer style.

you’ve done a lot of erasing and feathering and cleaning up, so chances are, the line work is not nearly as crisp as it looked in the original panel. that’s fine! shift the settings to “inside” and 1px, like so:

sometimes it’ll need to be 2-3 px, sometimes it’ll need to be center-aligned, and sometimes you might even decide it looks better outside or without the stroke style at all! this is all personal preference. do whatever you like.

once it's where you want it to be, i like to duplicate the layer -- to save the one without the new outline in case anything goes wonky. then right click the copy of the layer and "rasterize style" to get a flat image with new linework.

your workspace should look something like this:

if it happens to feel like the edges are a little harsh — which happens sometimes! especially when using selection instead of eraser — you can select the whole image and use refine edge. this softens it. you don’t need to do much; i usually do 2-3px of feathering, a couple pixels of smoothing, and some contrast, depending on how it looks. see below:

you'll have three layers now. it gets confusing, so try to keep track of which one is your active layer. you can delete old ones, if you want; i generally don't, just in case.

there isn’t a hard and fast rule for this part. do what you think looks good. and if you want to refine the edge before you add the new linework, that can work! do another stroke layer style after the first round! test things out and find out what you like. most of the time, it depends on the image and your preference.

after all that, this is the helena we now have:

step five: creating a new background!

this part is easy. create a new layer, pick a color you like — i tend to pull from the actual background using an eye dropper tool, or if it’s for a multiple-part edit, I use the swatches i’ve decided on for the color scheme of the whole thing — and paint bucket that thing right on there. this is some of the blue that was behind her originally:

i don’t like flat colors, pretty much ever, because they feel harsh to me. so i go back and add artistic touches and mess around with the filters a lot. sometimes i pull text or accents from other panels and follow the same steps as above to incorporate them into the edit; sometimes, i don’t. no rules just vibes.

in this case, i want it to be pretty simple. so i’ll make a new layer, then fill it in with a gradient tool. i usually make a custom gradient; one side is the color of the background and the other side is either black or white, depending on the vibe I want.

i do an orbital gradient most of the time — circles are your friend — and focus the center on something that I want to draw the eye to. here, i’m going to do helena’s face.

then i mess around with the opacity until it looks the way i want it to. like this:

step six: final steps

congrats! you have an edited panel! you’re perfectly fine to post/share/use it at this point, but there are a couple other things i like to do to give it that final polish:

if you want to jazz up your edits, try messing around with outer glow, or drop shadow. both of those layer styles can add some emphasis to your focal point. (i prefer those be kept at a low opacity, when i use them, which isn’t often.)

i'd also recommend messing around with gradient maps if you want to superimpose a larger silhouette over the background. that would take more room than i have left in this already far too long guide, but it does add something to have it in there.

i dislike having text bubbles in my edits unless i specifically put them there, so i do have a process for removing them, much like the smoke or the man in the foreground. again, we are running long already, so i won't get into that here. my recommendation if you don't want to deal with entirely removing a bubble is to just paint over the text inside with white so you have an empty text box or speech bubble instead. it's simpler, quicker, and honestly the more common practice based on what i've seen.

that being said, if you want to know how i paint over them -- or how to do anything i didn't get into here -- feel free to ask. i don't mind writing these up.

i have a guide on how i size my images here, which walks through the exporting process. it’s not strictly necessary, but i like for my edits to remain consistent in size, so i do usually follow it.

the HNL footage of Will's checkup is screwy

timeline shenanigans, NINA, both, or just showbiz baby?:

in 2x1 Will goes to HNL for his appointment at the lab with Owens, live footage of which is watched on CCTV by lab personnel in another room. we're shown a seamless transition from the live scene to the monitor, so you'd think that indicates the footage would be a faithful recording of exactly the same scene we saw happen. it's not.

when Owens plays it back in 2x2, it's slightly different:

most or all lines are a different take with slightly different deliveries, but most notably, the line where Owens asks Will about his heart is missing.

Owens' phrasing of his cold/frozen question is different.

at one point during the checkup, Owens scratches his nose. in the playback, it happens when he asks how Will felt when he saw the storm. but that isn't when it happened in the live scene - it was earlier, before the part Owens is playing back, when he asks Will to tell him about the episode he had.

there's a guy standing behind Owens throughout the live scene who I want to say is missing from the footage, although he could simply be standing just out of frame, I'm not sure

2x1 live scene: Will: There was this storm. Owens: Okay. So how did you feel when you saw the storm? Will: I felt……. frozen. Owens: Heart racing? Will: Just frozen. Owens: Frozen, cold frozen? Frozen to the touch? Will: No. Like how you feel when you're scared, and… and you can't breathe, or talk. Or do anything. I felt.. felt this evil -

2x2 playback: Will: There was this storm. Owens: Okay. So how did you feel when you saw the storm? Will: I felt…. frozen. Owens: Actually frozen? Cold? Will: No. Like.. like ah, like how you feel when you're.. scared, and you can't breathe or, talk or, do anything. I felt.. felt this evil -

now, I know shows do this all the time, where they'll roll a pared down version or a tighter take of a flashback or whatever in order to save time. but when it's ST and HNL and Sam "NINA" Owens and the fact they took out a line involving Will's heart of all things...

I think one of the most important scenes with this ring is end of The Innkeeper when Stede brings Ed back to life. The very last shot is Stede holding Ed's hand with the ring visible.

This is brilliant and it also got me thinking, let's follow the emerald ring through the season

2x1 and 2x2 - Ed doesn't want his crew (or us) to know how much he misses Stede. He has the emerald ring but we barely see it. Honestly, unless you pause the show every time you see Ed's hand and go frame by frame you will miss it. It's there for less then half a second during the fight montage in 2x1 and briefly when Ed sniffs the rhino horn and holds the ships wheel in 2x2. Stede is the only thing giving Ed any semblance of sanity and ONLY Ed gets to know that.

2x3 - We see the emerald clearly for the first time. It's when Ed is leaning on the staff and telling hornigold the reasons he wants to live. Warmth, good food, intercourse, orgasms. All things Stede gives him. This shot is from far away, we aren't being let in yet, but Ed is opening up a little and being pretty freakin clear about who and what he needs. The Ed sees Merman Stede and we HEAR THE RING BANGING THE FUCK AROUND BECAUSE OMG ED HAS HIS STEDE BACK. We don't see the ring, this moment is still just for Ed, but we sure as shit hear about it

2x4 - Ed's still half dead. Stede is here, but we're keeping our distance. We see the ring twice, once when Ed is talking to Wolf and again when Ed and Mary are smoking outside. The ring is noticeable without pausing, the shots of it are closer then in 2x3, but still rather distant. Stede is here, but their relationship is still pretty distant.

2x5 - Ed is relaxing, he has Stede. We're all calm and working through stuff. No rings to speak of, but that's ok cause right now we don't need the ring, we have Stede right here.

2x6 - Ed has the emerald back on, but we don't get many close ups of it. We see it sparkle and shine when Ed and Stede start making out. Ed has his Stede and his emerald twinkles. like in 2x4 the shot of the ring is clearer, but still relatively far away

2x7 - It's the morning after what I can only assume is (probably inadvisable) mind blowing sex and BOOM, close up on that emerald ring. This is the moment a majority of fans noticed the ring, many assuming Stede gave it to Ed the night before. And in a way he did, now that Ed has been well and truly docked you better fucking believe that it's time for Stede's ring to shine. It is also pretty well featured during the lunch scene, as our boys are still glowing from the morning. BUT, after this point, when Ed is panicking and running away we barely see it. He's freaked out, he isn't looking to the ring for comfort. Stede was there, but not Ed is pushing him away

2x8 - we get two long and lingering shots of the emerald. But first we get nothing. We don't see the ring clearly again until Ed and Stede reunite. Then we see that emerald shine, all over Stede's face, neck, and chest. Stede is here, Ed is here, they love each other and that friggin emerald knows it. We get a pretty good shot of it when Ed, Stede and Zhang are talking. Ed covers his left hand and the ring when he calls Stede's plan a suicide mission. The next and ;ast time we get a close up of that ring is when Izzy is dying and Ed thrusts his bloody hand forward. He's losing his family, but Izzy reminds him that he is surrounded by family. Stede is his family and the ring is there, in the closest shot we have had of it yet. Ed needs Stede now more then ever, and Stede is there.

We don't see the ring clearly again, but we do get some wedding vows, seems Ed and Stede have already fulfilled them...

Do you vow to protect and, if necessary, kill... for each other?

Do you vow to avenge the other in the event of your grisly death or dismemberment?

Do you vow to keep each other's ship afloat?

Full Episode Commentary

2x5: Kill or Be Killed

Stelena's argument 1x4 parallels

They open this episode with a flashback of Mason. Katherine pushed him to trigger his werewolf gene, and she did this similar to the way Damon set up Tyler's fight in 2x2. The important thing to know about this flashback of Mason and the truth of what Katherine did to him… is Damon's realization that he's no different than Mason. He ruined himself for her when he was just another toy. He's no different than Mason and Trevor. That's why Damon is done with Katherine. 2x1 was the full-blown scale of this realization, that's why he broke wide open and killed Jeremy. He didn't need Katherine to tell him that she faked her death for him to know that he died for nothing. Katherine levelled his ass. He became a vampire for nothing just as Mason became a werewolf for nothing. It was all for Katherine and whatever use she found in them. Damon's entire existence was a lie. So this is where things start to get interesting for Damon.

"He kept coming at me. He got in his head that I was sleeping with his girlfriend." Mason has absolutely no idea Katherine spearheaded his kill, but he is describing vampire compulsion while telling Tyler this story. Katherine not only got him to trigger his werewolf gene, she used his friend to do it. She had Mason killing his own friend in self-defense to trigger his gene. Like wow. She sent 26 of her friends to their deaths for the sake of faking her own, and she admits to doing it without blinking. She gets Mason to kill his friend in self-defense to trigger his werewolf gene. This woman is no joke. She doesn't care who they care about, she only cares about herself.

"On every full moon, I lose control. If I don't sedate myself and chain myself down, I'll kill anything in my path. You have to be careful. All it takes is an accident, a car wreck. Any death at your hands, and you'll have a lifetime of this. You don't want it Tyler, trust me."

So yeah, it's painful to watch Mason because you're getting Damon's truth at the same time. That's what makes this gorgeous. Damon has already reached this realization. Mason hasn't. Tyler continues to hide the moonstone because Mason lies like Stefan does. He's lying about why he wants the moonstone, so yeah… Tyler's keeping it for now. They cut to Jeremy and Elena. He's gonna be the reason Mason loses his moonstone because Tyler's gonna run his mouth to Jeremy. Jeremy and Elena are talking about Tyler being a possible werewolf. They don't know much about werewolves, so they're not sure what to think about him right now. Jeremy tells Elena it shouldn't be hard to figure out.

"There is no us. I said that I wouldn't keep things from you anymore. That doesn't mean that I want you involved in it. This is dangerous, Jeremy. You have to stay out of it, okay?"

What Elena wants and what Jeremy wants are two different things. This is "do as I say, not as I do" hypocrisy. That's why I love it when Jeremy leaves Elena's room just so Stefan can enter it. It's do as I say, not as I do hypocrisy. What Stefan and Elena are doing is dangerous. And if they think Katherine won't find out, they're nuts because she puts Stefan's stalking abilities to shame. She basically infiltrates Elena's house the way Damon infiltrated the council.

Stefan: Okay, how about this? Today, when we're fighting, if I say "I can't do this anymore, Elena", what I'll really mean is that I love you. Elena: And when I say, "Fine Stefan, whatever", well that means I love you too.

This scene of Stefan and Elena basically shows how most of their argument is real. Because yeah… the easiest way to fake an argument is to have a real argument. It feels less scripted that way. Look at me telling ya'll how to lie lol. They're basically pulling a Damon repeat through Katherine. When Jenna stabs herself, it parallels Damon force-feeding Elena his blood. "Fool me once, shame on you." Since I'm on the subject of lying, this is now the second season Stefan and Elena spend lying to someone. First season Damon, second season Katherine. So yes, Elena gets very good at lying. "You're gonna pretend to be a mother?" Caroline is such a bitch to her mother, but these are my favorite storylines for her… the ones with her parents. "You know, there's pretending to be a mother and then there's reality. Let's not push our luck, okay?" I can't believe this came out of her mouth. Like damn.

Whenever I consider Damon in his human life with Elena, I consider all of these Mystic Falls events. "I think you're the one that needs to watch his back." This scene Stefan has with Mason is similar to his scene with Logan. In threatening Damon, Mason threatened Stefan because they're brothers lol. Mason basically does to Stefan what Damon did to him. He shakes Stefan's hand, then prepares the attack… only Mason is intent on taking down both brothers. If he takes down Damon alone, he knows Stefan will kill him. That's why he involves Liz. Suddenly, the guy that doesn't involve himself in council business involves himself in council business to get rid of the Salvatores. Mason is actually risking himself in the process. All either of them have to do is open their mouths to Liz about him being a werewolf. Damon doesn't because he plans to kill Mason himself. The one thing you don't wanna do… is try to kill Damon's brother a second time and have him actually be there for it.

"Stefan, please tell me you don't seriously think a hand shake just solved our problem."

Stefan is pissed that he can't see Elena out in the open as he has been, that Katherine is affecting his relationship so much that he has to see Elena in secret. That's why he acts as if Katherine is Damon's problem when she isn't. Katherine forcing them to see each other in secret isn't Damon's problem. "So thank you, because we don't have enough problems." That's why I consider this comment from Stefan self-serving. Katherine isn't Damon's problem, and he's putting his issue with Katherine over Damon's issue with Mason. He doesn't care that Mason could kill them with a single bite so long as he can see his girlfriend out in the open, that's how ridiculous he is.

Katherine isn't Damon's problem. Not yet anyway. Stefan is just pissed that he can't see Elena out in the open. He's gotta be secretive about it. So what's gonna happen is Stefan is gonna help Damon with Mason and Damon is gonna help Stefan with Katherine. Then yeah… they're gonna combine for Jules to save Caroline. Damon doesn't consider Katherine his problem until she has Jenna stab herself. Then he's gonna be like… yeah, we gotta deal with her. Damon likes Jenna. I think it's her equal part responsible parent and equal part fun that he likes. Anyway, they're gonna switch. Damon will help Stefan with Katherine and Stefan will help Damon with the werewolves.

"Stefan, please tell me you don't seriously think a hand shake just solved our problem." I can't stop laughing at Damon. He knows.

They cut to Jeremy at the Grill. He's about to push the werewolf issue with Tyler. It's insane to me that Aimee considers Jeremy damaged goods. This girl knew Matt had a girlfriend and still chose to hit on him. And when Caroline showed up, she decided to make out with Tyler because she couldn't hook up with Matt. So no, I consider Jeremy too good for her. As I was saying about Mason… he treated Jeremy like a dick at the mayor's wake. He and Tyler were bonding over their dead fathers, and Mason totally interrupted. Now that Tyler is on the outs with Mason lying to him, Jeremy is about to get some intel. True as it should be, people prefer honesty. I feel that's ultimately why Mason blames himself for Tyler when he returns in Ghost World. He lies to Tyler the way Stefan lies to Elena. You don't get to pick and choose what truths to tell. You're either honest or you're not. Tyler hosts a four person party. Him, Jeremy, Aimee, and Sarah. Sarah is totally hitting on Jeremy.

I find it odd that neither brother thought to make a move with Mason despite knowing he'd try to kill them. They actually gave him time to make his own move. So because he's dealing with two vampires and it's not a full moon, he's involving Liz. "I just thought that we were stronger than that." Elena is hilariously lying, and I'm like... is your love strong enough that you're willing to lose your Aunt Jenna? If so, carry on. As much as I love Katherine in season 2, this entire storyline is too much teen drama for me. Fake fighting just so Mama Katherine can have her man all to herself? Come on, you're 500 years old. Just wait til Elena dies in the ritual, then you can have Stefan all to yourself. I have a seriously problem with teens acting this teenish because this 500 yo acts teenish.

Damon buys Liz's problem with Caroline, so he has no idea about her problem with him being a possible vampire. But it's a good way to separate the truth from the lies. This show gets pretty tricky in that department because Elena is carrying on two separate relationships with two brothers. Just as Stelena keeps secrets from Damon, Delena keeps secrets from Stefan. Different in the fact that Damon knows most of what's going on because he's not stupid. It's hard to keep anything from him. Yes, her and Caroline had a moment, but she's lying without lying because it's easier that way. She's basically hiding her moment with Mason behind her moment with Caroline. So you get this fake Stelena argument where most of it is real. It's the best way to lie as Liz just did to Damon. Because Damon had his own moment with Elena that Stefan doesn't know about, he picks up on it and lies to Stefan about how he knows. It's a bit hard to explain, but it's the reason Damon pulls two separate responses. I've included my Stelena argument gif post for this scene. Every scene in this episode has an opposite scene. Damon and Caroline are beautiful in this episode. They basically rehash their carnival moment.

Caroline tells Elena that talking to Stefan is a bad idea. It's a bad idea because of Katherine, but in choosing that moment to argue with Stefan, Elena outs herself to Damon. She literally just confessed her undying love for Stefan to Damon in 2x1. Now she's, "Fine, Stefan, whatever." She should've known Damon wouldn't buy that. He also knows Katherine is the root of their fake drama because she was outside the Grill for their first fight. Damon drops it because he wants nothing to do with Katherine and he's not gonna admit to Stefan that he tried to kiss Elena. Stelena's lies have to push so far that Jenna stabs herself. Then Damon will get involved. It's not like Damon is gonna lose sleep over Stefan and Elena having to see each other in secret. They're the ones choosing to be stupid. Jenna isn't about the knowing, she's about the consequence. Elena's issue with being a doppelganger reignites. She wants to know if Stefan is using her to replace Katherine. He just got done spending the day with Katherine, and he never once called Elena to tell her, so yeah... it's an issue for her. "How could you hate her and be in love with me?" Knowing why he hates Katherine will allow Elena to see if he's using her to replace Katherine… for the things he hates about her. "You're reaching." Elena isn't reaching… just like Damon wasn't reaching when he told Stefan that Mason is supernatural. It's important to look at terminology to understand where all of this leads. Know what it means to reach because Elena knows exactly what she's asking. "I'm not… I'm not Damon." A contradiction because Stefan is the only one that hated Katherine. They both know Damon loved her very much. But like always, Stefan tries to use Damon to deflect. I'd rather just skip over this argument because I already did a gif post for it. Damon slams Stelena because they suck at communication.

They cut to this four person party. Jeremy is trying to figure out if Tyler is a werewolf. Jeremy is good at drawing, but he's not Klaus. Klaus is really good. Tyler is so startled by the werewolf drawings that he lures Jeremy into another room. He considers it a personal assault, so he assaults Jeremy. Their scene is written like his carnival scene with Damon. This is exactly how Damon would react to someone learning his truth. Damon and Mason are hilarious. Wow… Mason really screwed himself with this one. Had Damon not been distracted by the argument Stelena just had, he would've known that Mason roofied the drinks. Yeah, Damon is pissed. Liz realizes that a member of her vampire-killing council is a vampire lol. Like yeah, he totally killed vampires to sell himself as a human lol. I love Caroline's moment with Elena here, admitting she's not a good friend at all. She then notices something's up with her mother. Damon is pissed more than before because of the vervain, and so pissed that he's not thinking straight. He's acting impulively, which is what Mason wanted. He wanted Damon and Stefan storming him at once because he's the bait. It's like the easiest thing to do to an impulsive person. Get them to not think, to just follow you. Liz and two deputies. They inject Damon and Stefan with vervain. Because Damon has yet to build a tolerance, it's enough.

So the difference between Mason and Damon is clear. While Mason would stab Damon in the front rather than the back, he's not strong enough to take on Damon because it's not a full moon. So yes, he has Liz getting her hands dirty for him. It's really a cheap shot if you ask me. He literally has a woman doing his dirty work. Tyler tells Jeremy that Mason is a werewolf, but he's not… yet. He basically explains the process on how to trigger his gene. Tyler views Mason the same way Stefan views Katherine. He's not here for him, he's here for the stone. He doesn't consider two birds, one stone. Like duh.

Insane that Mason has Liz and her deputies taking Damon and Stefan into the Lockwood cellar where he turns into a werewolf… and she has no idea he's a werewolf. If she did, he'd be down there with them. "Old slave quarters from the original Lockwood house." The reason I was disgusted with Tyler when he took Aimee down there to make out with her. Mason tries to stay because he wants to make sure they die. He made a big mistake walking away lol. "Well, I'm guessing that he only has to worry about that during a full moon. Otherwise you're not as strong, am I right? Or you would have killed Damon by now." When Stefan confronted Mason, I knew what was gonna happen. It only takes one vampire to take him down. What I like about this episode is how Mason is written opposite Jules. The only way to drag it out painfully, is by hitting Damon's humanity. That's the only way to truly torture him. What makes this extremely uncomfortable for Damon, is knowing that Liz could have tortured him by threatening to stake Stefan to get her answers.

It's sorta like this… John and Anna repeat, only it's Liz and Stefan. I love what this does to Damon. He's not just gonna kill Mason, he's gonna enjoy it. Damon could use Caroline to connect with Liz, but he refuses to. That's another thing I love about this scene. He won't tell her that her daughter is a vampire. That's Caroline's truth to tell. Poor Caroline. She doesn't want her mom to find out about her, and Elena's like… I'm going in there to save them by myself then. Yeah, Damon is refusing to use Caroline to connect with Liz. He's hoping their friendship is strong enough. It's not… Liz hates vampires. She's literally getting ready to stake them when Elena comes in. "Mom." This is why I love Caroline's storylines with her parents. They're so insane. She just killed Liz's deputies right in front of her to save her friends. "Damon's right, you know. If there's ever time to break your diet…" I love how Caroline contradicts herself in her hate for Delena. In 4x7, she tells Elena that Damon is never right. Damon is right most of the time. The animal diet makes it take longer for Stefan to heal. It weakens every aspect… compulsion, healing, strength, even speed. That's why I'm so frustrated with season 4 Stefan. He's gonna go on the human diet to handle Katherine, but expect Elena to defend herself against Connor on the animal diet.

Mason tainted what Damon had. The ability to at least imagine Liz accepting him as a vampire. Because of Liz and Caroline, Elena now knows how Stefan can hate Katherine but be in love with her. He can't love vampires. She's watching Caroline out herself to Liz the way Katherine outed herself to Stefan. Liz's compulsion will follow, so that's included along with Katherine's compulsion on Stefan. Yes, Elena sees the full scope of things through Liz and Caroline. "I can't take this. Kill me now." Liz hates Caroline so much that she begs Damon to kill her. "Relax guys. No one is killing anybody." lol…

Jeremy: Why didn't you give it to him? Tyler: Because he wants it. I'm a dick that way. It's important to him for some reason but I don't trust the guy so I'm not just gonna hand it to him.

Tyler talks to Jeremy about this moonstone. I'm pointing out this part of their conversation because Tyler and Damon have a great deal in common. That's why Damon wanted the Gilbert device. He wanted it because John wanted it and he couldn't trust him. Sarah is the kind of girl I wouldn't party with. Tyler and Jeremy almost lose their shit because she falls down the stairs and plays dead. Some girls are cool to hang out with, but they get too stupid when they're drinking.

Damon is so sweet to Liz. The cellar may not be the Ritz, but she's getting star treatment. He's as particular about his sheets as he is about his clothes. "You have no idea how wrong you are about that." Two birds with one statement. What's beautiful about these scenes is that they're written opposite the carnival. Damon basically admits he was wrong for saying what he did when he tried to kill Caroline. A moment of technicality on Damon's part. Even though she is already dead, she's not gone. Damon is more than honest about vampirism, and he makes sure people know it. Now he regrets it with Caroline. It's kinda like his comment to Jeremy in Denver. Jeremy calls Rose a dead vampire, and Damon tells him that's redundant because vampires are dead lol.

"He can hear us wherever we are because he drinks this." Just so you undertand where I'm going with this... Damon can hear Stelena argue because he's on human blood, but Stefan can't hear Delena talk because he's on the animal diet. It's because of this, Damon is left with another secret to hold onto. It's because Stefan can't hear Damon and Elena that he's blind to the truth of her feeding him.

"Hey, Stefan didn't drink the people blood, if you were curious. But he needs to, and deep down you know that." I'm just gonna say it right now... everything you saw of Stefan feeding in season 1 matters in season 2 lol. As romantic as Stefan might think this moment is, she's basically feeding him because Damon just told her to. Imagine Damon telling Elena to feed Stefan her blood to survive Frederick. That's basically what I'm telling you, but you have to view it scene for scene as compared to the first season. That's why they argue at the fridge that Stefan still has stocked full of blood bags. And yes, they do repeat the Miss Mystic pageant. That's why Elena ends up at the stairwell in 2x8.

So yes, picture Damon telling Elena to feed Stefan as she did here. And yes, Damon knows that in order for Stefan to maintain, Elena will have to feed him. He can't moderate his blood intake drinking from blood bags, and they both know it. Elena is pissed, but she has to accept this truth.

Fans aren't gonna like what I'm about to say, but... this is every reason why Damon and Elena end up together. Damon doesn't need to sink his teeth into Elena to drain her, and people are consumed in different ways. Damon is pushing Elena darker just by pushing her into that room to feed Stefan. He's basically bleeding Elena of her humanity, slowly and gradually until she becomes a vampire. He is her death and her life, the problem and the solution. She argues with Stefan but listens to Damon because they have that connection. They simply build from friendship to romance. And yes, they've always been like this. He persuaded her to Atlanta, persuaded her to bait Noah, persuaded her into the tomb with him... because they have that connection. Their trust and understanding is at such a level that not even Stefan can understand it. Damon is simply able to get through to her in ways that Stefan can't.

I love this conversation Elena has with Caroline. She can't even go home, that's how scared she is of Katherine. Mason tries to contact Liz, but gets her voicemail. He's gonna find out soon enough. Tyler walks in to give him the moonstone because in order to let go of it, he has to let go of all of it. He's done letting it consume him. "I heard." This is Damon's way of telling Elena that he heard because he's on human blood. He wants her to know that he overheard her argument with Stefan.

It's important to know that Stefan's diet isn't the only important part of their argument where Damon is concerned. "Katherine took a little vervain every day and built up a tolerance to it. I could do the same with blood." Damon overheard this and started building his tolerance to vervain. That's why Jules' friend has a hard time dropping him. He got hit with vervain by Stefan in 1x4, hit with vervain by John in 1x22, and just got hit with vervain by Liz. He's done getting hit, put it that way.

So you get this loop back to 2x1. "It's you and me, Stefan. Always." Suppose I should point this out now. Damon and Elena are written in 2x1 and 3x1. Stefan and Elena are written in 2x5 and 3x5. Stefan stops being her always when he rips into her. That's why "always" comes into this scene when she feeds him. Elena's love for Damon is written opposite her hate, so she falls for Damon on her birthday.

Mason has no idea he's giving Katherine the werewolf sacrifice and the moonstone for Klaus' ritual. Something he won't realize until he watches from the other side. "What was that stunt today that you pulled with Damon and Stefan Salvatore? I told you to stay away from them." Katherine knows everything, and she's not happy about it.

The open and close of an episode. They hold off on Katherine until the end, until they're ready to reveal her connection to Mason.

I think it's funny, some of their full circle stuff in this episode. How is Stefan gonna vervain Damon and try to desiccate him for 50 years when the sheriff wants to kill them both lol

Chronotrek: Strange New Worlds Part 1

I've now finished Enterprise and Discover seasons 1 and 2, as well as all the Short Treks up to Children of Mars.

For those of you who are just finding this (sorry for invading your SNW tag), when I started this 'project', I had only seen a handful of episodes of ANY Trek content and the JJ Abrams movies. I decided to watch all the Star Trek canon in in-universe chronological order. Well, simplified. I watch typically while I'm working, so not only might I miss a few things when I get focused, but I also can't just switch episodes on the fly, so I'm only switching at the ends of seasons. No "this episode had time travel and they went back 300 years, so it should be between these two episodes of a different show" stuff. But I am splitting Disco at the end of season 2 so I've finished Season 2 and will pick up 3 after I finish ALL THE REST OF TREK :scream:

Ok! On to Strange New Worlds Season 1!

Interesting intro... retro but modern, very colorful (like they said their uniforms were when Pike was introduced on Disco 2x1 :joy:)

Tell me Number One never has a name. I think that was an excellent running gag.

Pike looks like Chris Pine with that beard. I thought that was the former Admiral Cromwell until they showed her face, like it was a flashback. I don't actually know what the dates of everything are, so the date flashing on the screen means nothing. lol

I thought she looked a little familiar, but did not recognize Melanie Scrofano.

At first I thought it was flashing all the way back to Archer's dad and the warp engine. That was in Montana too, right? Were Pike and Archer both horse guys from Montana or am I confusing the two?

Aww Spock guessed right, her name IS Una. Which... is number one :Joy: omg I thought I wouldn't like her being named but the name is a PUN?? I take it back.

Shuttle Stamets?? They named a shuttle after him?

So I guess they retconned the last tiny bit of Disco season 2? Where Spock shows up without a beard and they go off doing things.

And a ship named for Archer.

Mentions of Lt Kirk along with Uhura on the bridge... I know those names.

So Pike is scared of what he saw in the time crystal. Not issues with the Discovery 'disappearance.'

Episode 2 Children of the Comet

Shades of Hoshi Sato there- the comms officer who knows way too many languages and is afraid of away missions. It's weird because I know that Uhura is an OG character, so Hoshi came after her, but this show is after Enterprise (and I haven't seen OG Trek) so to me, she's Sato II not the other way around.

Why would you take a man's helmet off after a blow? One, you're wearing the helmets for a reason. Can you breathe? Two, if he had a head or neck injury the helmet could be the only thing keeping him from getting injured even worse.

She has a pretty voice.

I mean... the comet _let them go_ shouldn't the Shepherds respect that?

There is a reason things like 150 and 180 are said 'one-five-oh' or 'one-eight-zero' and not one-fifty or one-eighty. It could cause miscommunication, confusing it for 115/118.

"Maybe don't judge our faith next time." Pike's smirk saying 'we made your god change its mind.' ...so then they explain how the comet is precognitive? It is fate and not science? That seems antithetical to Trek? I thought science was the god Trek worshipped.

I don't like Spock's little curls on the ends of his sideburns.

Episode 3

Yet another reason that the highest level officers shouldn't be on away teams- when someone gets infected with something at impairs their decision making and such who is in charge of the ship, bad things can happen.

Number One has a last name too? And not just one but two!

She just fuckin' carries a full grown man over her shoulder like it's nothing. That's a dummy :joy: Why she so strong? Oh, the strength is even remarked on by the nurse. It's A Thing. She's not human? And nobody knew that? I feel like that would have been a thing noticed in all the many times Starfleet surely scans you. Like... species _has_ to be a thing that they know for medical reasons.

Rukiya means 'she rises up' in Swahili. I used that name for an NPC trans princess in my D&D game. She's The Chosen One.

TS4 Custom Fireplace Tutorial

Do you struggle to find a fireplace that actually matches the aesthetic of your sims' homes? Yeah, me too. So I figured out how to make my own.

This tutorial requires at least a basic knowledge of build mode, the platform tool, and how to install and use custom content.

First up, this tutorial uses a few pieces of CC. I'm sure someone more creative than me could find a way around that, but for the sake of simplicity, you'll need to grab the following items:

Peacemaker - Lofte Living Decor Brick Arch Pieces

Ravasheen - Feel the Burn Fireplace Inserts (specifically the standalone firewood, but the rest are equally useful for making cool custom fireplaces).

Got everything? Good. Open your game and pick a lot. If you want to actually light your fireplace to test it out, you'll need a sim too.

Step One: Build a box. You you can build whatever size box and wall height you want. This is the box where the fire will live. I'm just using a short wall with a little 2x1 box, but you can use a 2x2 or even just a tiny 1 tile. It just has to fit whatever fireplace insert you're using. We will be using the Standalone Firewood, which has a half-tile footprint.

Step Two: Locate the decor brick pieces. These can be found in wall decorations or by searching "lofte".

Place the decor brick pieces against your wall box, starting with the top which uses the 1x1 segments. Next place the side pieces according to your chosen wall height. Here I've placed the short 1 tile pieces. Last, fill in the corners using the outer corner pieces. You'll end up with the picture above or something similar if you got creative.

Step Three: Delete the walls and place the standalone firewood. It's located in the fireplaces category.

*Note: At this point if you would like your fireplace lit, have your sim light it. Once it is raised up sims cannot interact with it unless you lower the platform. It's kind of a pain but unavoidable unless you want to have a ground level fireplace, which you can totally do too. For this tutorial I'm going over a few other customization options which involve using the platform tool.

Step Four: Click the box and raise your platform to the desired height. We're just going up on click for now.

Step Five: Add a small fence to the front. Choose walls and floors to match or whatever you want. Some of the wall pieces have matching floors too, which I think looks great for realistic brick fireplaces. I'm using The Brickery here. Customize to your heart's content.

Other Options:

Adjust the platforms and use other wall pieces from the set to make all sorts of different fireplaces. There are really tons of ways to do this. In the first pic I used the short 1x1 segments on the top and the bottom and raised the platform accordingly. In the second I used the 1 tile arch piece and placed the short 1x1 segments below to make a brick oven looking thing.

Here's a thing you could do if you want an open-sided fireplace in the middle of a room or something.

You can use the other wall pieces, windows, fences, and platform trims to customize it however you want. Lots of options!

Just remember that sims need a clear path and the fireplace on ground level to interact with it. This is more for decoration than anything, but it technically will function you just have to hop into build mode and lower the platform before sims can light it or put it out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You know when your week is shit and everything seems to be spiraling down and not working anyway??

Like, it's not the most serious shit ever, sure, but still. It fucking sticks and I can't take it and it seems to be growing worse and worse.

I made plans with my siblings to go get our ears pierced, found a cheap place with a 2x1 offer. One of them isn't in the same house as us, didn't send their part of the money we need and when I told them to come so we could go they said they're coming when they want to (?) The fucking 2×1 offer is until August, so they have to come the fuck now but I guess fuck it??????????????

My other sibling has their sleep schedule fucked, and I don't fucking think they'll be able to fix it soon. They literally went to sleep at 11 today, so.

We could go tomorrow, but I doubt sibling 1 will want to come.

Sunday the shop is closed and it's my grandma's birthday.

Monday I have to go to my uni to sign up for the next semester. (Wich I'm fucking stressed about bc I don't know how to do it but that's another bag of shit. The thing is at 10 and I'm waking up at 10:30-11 so fuckkkk meeee) Technically we could go that day, and I'd be up for it if my siblings are, but still.

Wednesday is the time limit and we've got nothing planned and none of them are awake for me to talk with them or try and get something fucking defined. I'm not asking much, either. Just a shitty confirmation that we're even doing this shit.

I'm thisss fucking close to grab my part of the money and go get them by myself and fuck everyone, but Jesus Fucking Christ why can't we do something together for once.

Sibling 1 most of all. I don't know what's their fucking issue but it's like they're allergic to schedules and plans.

Her being bulletproof is good because homelander is too unstable to not try her

Wheel of Time 2x1 "A Taste of Solitude" thoughts:

So much chatter from the Dark friend Social clip about the Aes Sedai ring, whether it was really black, why they would wear a black ring to announce their Ajah...guys, she's wearing it over gloves which means there was a very conscious decision to wear it to display both allegiance to the Dark One and status as a sister. I highly doubt it's ever worn outside of scenarios where everyone present is also a Darkfriend.

The Tua'thuan girl who was present at the social...was it the same child who escaped the slaughter of the caravan? Horrifying implications if so.

As much as I love Hurin, I really support the decision to replace him with Elyas. Sniffing is not a Talent ever seen again in WoT and having that skill be directly related to communication with the wolves is a great move.

Also love Perrin getting sent the images (from the wolves without realising) just before Elyas shares what he knows.

Loved loved loved everything about the Tower scenes...they did such a great job of teaching us more about the Tower and its culture while also making all the information feel natural and the characters rounded

Ihvan and Maksim's backstory! Egwene being super uncomfortable with how openly sexual Alanna is! Novice chores being turned into a lesson! Nynaeve taking up with the warders because fighting with a sword is something she can learn and she'd rather give up on the power than try and fail! (Truly such a brilliant choice on the writer's part)

I'm just disappointed that they haven't introduced Elayne via her friendship with Egwene...maybe she and her brother(s?) haven't arrived at the Tower yet?

I'm not sure how a year has passed since the first episode (6 months since Fall Dara, one month time skip to get to Tar Valon...surely everything else didn't take 5 months?) but I'll accept it because the Bel Time sequences and callbacks were beautiful

Perrin lighting a lantern for Layla and Rand but not being able to give up his wedding ring, Egwene and Nynaeve lighting a lantern for Rand while touching on their grief, and of course the reveal that Rand is celebrating Bel Tine too...scattered across the world, they're still tied together by the traditions of their home

Liandrin revealed to be a Darkfriend in one of the best ways possible...heartbreaking to see the result of Moiraine's decision to set the Red Ajah on Mat when she still suspected he might be the dragon is that he's now a prisoner of a member of the Black Ajah and thinks his friends have all forgotten/abandoned him (since he doesn't know Liandrin can lie)

Donal looks soooo close to the Mat in my head and I'm so excited to see him in action this season. Happy that it seems we're skipping a second book of Mat being tainted by the dagger and going straight to him trying to escape from Tar Valon

Oh...if Mat doesn't/never realises that Liandrin is Black Ajah this gives him SUCH a good reason to be distrustful of all Aes Sedai in the future! Moiraine sold him to the Red Ajah and then Liandrin has kept him imprisoned!

Liandrin is so sinister that every scene with her makes me grip the edge of my seat...even before the reveal, being told that she's killed a novice before with her methods makes you seriously worried about what she's going to do to Nynaeve to break her block

Moiraine is such a crunchy character...how she doesn't mind putting people in danger if it serves the greater good, how she treats Lan exactly the way she did the kids in the first season (withholding all information)...she gets so much love on tumblr that it's easy to forget that she is not exactly Good

Love that without the bond Lan and Moiraine don't know how to talk to each other...nice callback to the conversation between Karene and her warder last season about how they're a strange pair, and their bond and mutual quest is really all that held them together

But still! Lan knowing Moiraine enough to know where she's gone and showing up just in time to save her! That whole fight really puts emphasis on how disadvantaged regular people are compared to channelers bc the whole time I was just begging Verin and Adeleas to show up

(I'm mostly okay with them merging Verin and Vandene but it means we're probably gonna miss the Grieving Sister on a Revenge Quest later on which really is a shame...almost nothing in the books makes me cry like the scene of Vandene wailing over her sister)

I'm not sure whether the sparks around Moiraine were her starting to break her shield, or just channeling from the others that she thought for a second was hers...I'm leaning a bit towards the former a) because Moiraine will probably have to break her shield herself before the end of the season (I don't see Ishy lifting it) and b) because it's a fascinating parallel with Nynaeve breaking her own block, and both of them using extreme emotion to reach for the source.

Really like the reveal that the battle at the EOTW only broke the seal that was keeping Ishy trapped...can't remember how that worked in the books but it's a great change if it's not. I'm assuming the broken seal Domon found was holding Lanfear in and that the poem he gave Moiraine revealed her identity

Also! Domon! I love you but where is your weird-ass beard that leaves your upper lip bare?

Uno is so good so far and Ingtar is...very attractive, I'm going to be so upset when he dies
