To the tumblr user that trauma-dumped:

So you found your salvation in pessimism. You took a road away from the hurtful place and escaped, to find yourself in a world that was hopeless and joyless, and in that you were happy.

That's all well and good, but if that exit road lead to pessimism, then surely there are other roads that lead to other things as well? Roads that lead to various beliefs and various different forms of living? Perhaps optimism would be one such example?

The long and the short of it is simple: the point you tried to make has fallen flat. We can assume you were, as you say, trying to warn us of the dangers positivity can bring, but that message is incomplete without the dangers that negativity can bring too.

The intention was clearly a good one, a survivor attempting to save others from the horrible mistakes they had made, so that they too may find the same solace you have, or better yet, not need to. But in execution you have failed. Yes, perhaps there is one or two that have been swayed by your words, but there have been far more that haven't, and those that have pushed against you. I don't mean to say that this is because you are just wrong, but that you're forgetting that everyone experiences the world differently.

What is a plant to one is a symbol of life to another and a irritation to a third. You can't hope to force everyone to have the same view of a thing, and trying to enact such a warning, such salvation, is a bad idea and a poor choice. Of course the people regect you- you go against their worldview just as much as they go against yours. Until the day you see that trying to save people like this is pointless, you will only find the same result.

That said, you nor anyone else needs to take our advice, you are free to see the world however you wish. But that is the take-away that is the reason for our response. You don't need to act. You don't need to expose yourself and your life story to others on a tumblr post. You have a choice not to. You can choose when to fight and raise your voice, and you can choose when to ignore a post.

But shouldn't that go against the point of fighting? That it's your duty to make others' lives easier and better by helping them understand the truth? No. The point is that you, and everyone else, all have choices, and the freedom to live those choices. You won't accomplish anything by campaigning for goodness, all you can do is govern yourself. If all others happen to come to the same conclusion as you because, yes, there ARE many things worth fighting for, then great.

But all you CAN do is watch others make their own choices. They will fall, they will get up, they will fall again, it doesn't matter. What matters is that they have the freedom to choose when to fall and when to get back up. That they have the freedom to make mistakes. That they have the freedom to grow. That they have the freedom from salvation.

And it is in that freedom that others find optimism where you find pessimism. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Helena: Wait a minute. I think I went to high school with that g-

Lilith: Focus, Helena! If they’d prefer, we can make them forget they were ever even here — though some of them do like to remember.

Helena: [nervously] But they’ll live?

Lilith: Regrettably, vampire business owners are not above the law. If anyone died, they’d have blood on their hands too, and they wouldn’t hesitate to tear you limb from limb for inconveniencing them with all that red tape. They fatten us up on appetizers so we pose less of a risk.

Helena: Caleb?

Caleb: [reluctantly] If you’re going to drink from humans, this is the safest way to do it.

Helena: But you won’t?

Caleb: Abstaining is my decision, but you have to make your own. No one should pressure you into doing something you don’t want to.

Helena: [meekly] I think I want to try.

Lilith: Good. I booked us a private room — in case you’re feeling shy about feeding in public.

Caleb: Well, this seems like my cue to leave.
