Epel, Cater: With Open Arms
ashldbasiyaod Sorry for getting your birthday fic out late, Epel 💦
I couldn't find anything in the vignettes to hone in on as the major topic for his convo with Cater... so I made up my own little tale based on the painting in Epel's Groovy illustration and used that as a jumping off point. Hopefully you still enjoy!
A Tale as Old as Time.
Tumblr media
Red was not Epel's color.
It was too bright, too bold—and yet he felt his eye drawn to it. The color, a magnet with a pull too strong to resist.
There.
A fair maiden, her eyes shut, cupped the fruit in both hands. Dainty fingers hugged the apple--round, ripe, and skin the color of a ruby. It was unblemished and free of bites, trapped in the scene to be savored by the gazes of passerbys.
"Hehe. This one looks pretty tasty too," Epel murmured to himself.
"Are you looking out for every painting with an apple in it?" Cater teased from a little way ahead of him. His eyes glinted with mischief, and Epel was reminded of a Granny Smith. Not quite the same shade, but there was the familiar tartness, a slight bite.
"I guess so. I help out with produce quality control back home, so I think I just started doing it without thinking." He slightly inclined his head. "It's a nice apple."
"You don't know the story behind it?"
"Er, no. I didn't realize there was one."
"It's a cautionary tale about being wary of strangers!" Cater threw a wink to the first year. "They tell it all the time to kids in the Shaftlands.
"It goes like this: a girl lives in the forest with seven of her friends. One day, when her friends are off mining for work, a stranger offers her a juicy red apple. She takes a bite of it and falls unconscious. The stranger had poisoned the apple because they were jealous of the happy life the girl had.
"The girl's seven friends come home and manage to bring her an antidote, so she's okay. The stranger is chased away, and the girl and her friends are a happy family again."
"Gosh, that's morbid! Why'd you have to go and tell me that..."
"Hehe. Scary, right?" The amused trill in Cater's voice didn't match his words. "Envy can drive people to do some pretty insane things to come out on top."
"When you say it with a smile like that... I can't help but be a little worried, Cater-senpai."
"It's not that surprising. Happens all the time on socials!" his upperclassman chirped. The green of his eyes had shifted a shade darker. "It's much easier to turn on someone when you're looking at them through a screen instead of in the eyes."
Epel clasped his hands to his chest. "... Do people really do that though? Just go on the internet to lie and backstab...?"
"Aww, you're still so innocent, Epel-chan. Well, you'll learn about this kind of stuff sooner or later. Placing your faith in anyone that comes along might lead to you hurting in the end."
"Is that really how it is?" Epel's brows scrunched--as did his nose. It made him look like a frustrated little bunny. "It might be a city thing.
"In Harveston, we help each other out all the time. Everyone knows each other. If the harvest is heavy and we're short on hands, the neighbors will pick apples with us. When there's a celebration, it's potluck style. We each make a dish and share it with the village. My ma 'n pa... er, that is, my parents... they always tell me we ought to extend that courtesy to outsiders and tourists too."
"That must be the famous Harveston hospitality Lils told me about! It sounds so nice~" Cater sighed wistfully, then pouted. "It's rare to find a community as close-knit as that nowadays. In the largest cities, people are way too busy to pay you any mind. Cay-kun's got major FOMO!"
"Ahahah... We really did grow up in very different places." Epel smiled softly. "Tell you what. If you ever visit, we'll be sure to welcome you with open arms, Cater-senpai. You can be a part of our family too."
"Eh, you mean it?!" Cater's face immediately lit up--and Epel had to wonder if his sadness had been an act. Truth or lie? It was always difficult to tell with him.
"I might just take you up on that offer then," Cater crooned, slipping an arm around Epel's shoulder. "You'll have to show me all of the best attractions and local specialties! Oh, and the best photo spots!"
"It's a promise."
His mouth stretched into a cheeky smirk. The red of a shining apple and the taste of a teasing—temptations he failed to resist.
"And how about a juicy poisoned apple to bring back as a souvenir?"

Oh god, please don't do this.
Update your phone.
Maybe an argument can be made to wait a week or two just in case there are bugs in the new update, but updates are crucial to your phone's security. Updating apps is also part of that security. Unless it is an app that has no internet requirement, you need to keep them current. And if an app is no longer being supported or updated, you should probably move on to the next best thing. Even if that sucks sometimes.
And I hate to defend Apple all the time, but you cannot make current judgments based on the freakin' iPhone 4. Apple currently makes some of the longest lasting products on the market. Not only that, they support those products with software updates for pretty much their entire lifespan. Google and Samsung were being praised this year for promising 5 and 7 years of updates. Apple has been doing this for years now. They never put a number on it, but if a phone can run the software, they support it.
In fact, the big story about Apple slowing down phones is always presented as them wanting people to buy new phones, but in that case they were actually trying to extend the life of people's devices. If they hadn't throttled the CPU, the battery would have bricked a bunch of phones. Their error was not disclosing what they were doing. They got sued for that and rightly so. All people needed was a battery swap and they'd be back to full speed. It's ridiculous that Apple didn't just disclose that from the beginning.
Also, the days of phones getting too old to run new software are pretty much over. Moore's Law is slowing down and phones are incredibly powerful and anything within the last 5 years or so will probably last 7 to 10 years if you take care of it. Depending on your use, you might need a battery swap, but you should only need to replace your phone sooner if there are features you absolutely need in the new model.
Apple's big sin is not planned obsolescence but repairability. Their products are well made. They last a long time. And they tend to have fewer manufacturing defects than other brands. (In general. Your anecdotal experiences will vary.)
But... shit happens.
People drop things. They spill things. They abuse things. And when they break, you shouldn't have to get a whole new thing. Apple seems to have poorly trained diagnostic staff who commonly tell people their device cannot be repaired when the diagnosis is not apparent. Or they will misdiagnose something with a super expensive repair when it is actually a minor fix. (Which is why experienced repair shops exist and should be supported by Apple.) Apple has tried to micro-manage the repair process of their devices to such a degree that it has sparked an entire advocacy movement.
But don't let Google, Samsung, etc off the hook either. They suck too. If you are using Android thinking you have some moral high ground, they either do the same shit or they do slightly different shit that is just as bad.
Not to mention, Google is an advertising company. I don't understand people who are like, "Apple is evil, so I'm going to use this advertising platform instead." It's a lateral move, at best.
No good guys in capitalism, folks.
At minimum, repair shops should be able to use spare parts from broken devices to fix salvageable ones. And Apple is literally pairing screens and chips to one device so they can't be used to fix others. It's... diabolical.
So, update your phones.
Apple is bad at repairability but is good as far as planned obsolescence goes. Although when computers and phones eventually are able to last for 20 years, we'll see if that changes. For now, they make things that last until you fumble them into the toilet bowl and *that* is when they start to suck.
If you need a good villain to talk about planned obsolescence, I would go with Samsung appliances.

Hoistedworked: Origins
Tumblr media
Alright, okay, yeah. Back on the wagon, right here in the woods. It's still plenty remote, cold enough to teach a Dwarf to speak in clicks, and it is actually capable of sustaining life. Sure it's no glacier but the glacier was always a shitty idea. We can at least carve something out here. Like some ideas are actually just bad. Like too bad to manage. This one though is basically fine. We can do this.
Tumblr media
See? Look at this shit, it's beautiful. Plants. Trees. Actual solid ground. Since I never introduced the actual decapods before, let's pretend these are all just the same guys, okay? Just for convenience's sake.
Tumblr media
Cikuti Worthoars, who likes bobbit worms for their knobs and angles. Oh yeah and suddenly the snow cleared up. Don't ask me, I don't know why.
Tumblr media
Cutichi Strengthtown, AWESOME name. He likes to eat seahorse meat and loves two-grain wheat beer.
Tumblr media
Chetek Boattrussed, who likes kangaroos for their pouches. 🤔
Tumblr media
Cukikuki Townriddle. Big fan of eating giant Brown Recluse spiders, even though she hates cave spiders. I'm not going to ask.
Tumblr media
Scukikik Denttongs. Big beak dog fan.
Tumblr media
Retuti Livingwheel, groundhog fan and mead drinker. Wonder if we can actually get a bee colony set up here.
Tumblr media
And finally Cikuki Prisoncrafts, goat eater. Well, please forgive me if I kind of breeze past the "starter base setup" phase here.
Tumblr media
Or, well, I would, but... nobody wants to work. That's not some boomerism, nobody will just pick up the tools to chop wood or dig holes. They gather plants fine, and took apart the wagon without any trouble, but now they're just... gawking...
Reading about it on Reddit, it seems the solution is to just retire the fort and then immediately un-retire it. So we'll try that I guess.
Tumblr media
come on... come on... YES!!
Tumblr media
We don't even make it all the way down 10 stories before discovering the cavern this time. And before you ask:
Tumblr media
yep, fucked up normal grass again. Whatever. It's not as big of a deal this time. One day I really ought to properly ask how that even happens, but for now, I'm just rolling with it.
Tumblr media
Up above, all that happened in the two weeks the game makes you wait whenever you start fortress mode again is that the crabs spilled all their prickleberry wine. What a tragedy!
Tumblr media
After about a season, we've got a pretty nice setup coming together. All the stockpiles are hidden away under the big main meeting area, the aquifer drains into a cistern, things that rot are kept safely away from the average crab's path, and walls are being built up top to make a more secure entrance. We've eaten a boar and silky sea slug while food stocks were low, and the giant leopard we brought with us "went missing" some time ago - which probably just means it's dead. Giant raccoons have been harrassing us up on the surface, but that's the point of setting up our defenses. It's a much more auspicious start than our first expedition, and with self-sufficiency actually taken care of, we'll be able to get our paper economy and library off the ground sooner than later. We've also found a bit of native platinum quite high up in the earth, but once you start the metal economy, it feels like you just sort of become a metal economy fortress. So we'll hold off on that for now. Also, the giant wolves keep wandering into our meeting hall. Don't worry, they're ours, but they'd probably suit us better outside fending off the raccoons... Oh, and nobody has bedrooms yet. Nobody's too pressed about that, though. One time a really drunk guy came over to my house and when I said "alright that's it for the night" he was like for sure, peace out, slapped my hand, fistbumped me, grabbed his things and walked 5 steps out the front door to fall asleep sitting up on the stairwell of my apartment. So people can do that, people can just sleep on stairs. My roommates found him and were like "what the fuck" and I was also like "what the fuck" because I figured he'd just go home. I think they just let him sleep though. I would've heard it if he fell down the stairs and he didn't. So you can do that.
Tumblr media
There's not a lot to say right now. We're not making a ton of money, but we're sustaining ourselves fine.
Tumblr media
Defenses are coming together fine, too. Our giant wolves had pups and the pups have the zoomies. It's wonderful.
Tumblr media
There's a quantum stockpile now to make woodworking a lot easier. For those not in the know, a "quantum stockpile" is a 1x1 stockpile that gets filled by having a minecart dump into it. The cart races down from the surface, and is just long enough that it doesn't crash at the end, though also just too long to auto-dump - so instead, the solution is to make whoever finishes filling the cart hop in and ride it down so that they can push it the last couple tiles. Or at least, that's the plan; at first crabs just kicked the cart down the ramp, but since I changed it to be ridden instead, everyone's been too busy putting a ceiling over the main "courtyard."
Tumblr media
Here's our "administrative wing": counter-clockwise from the top, it houses our expedition leader Worthoars, production supervisor Boattrussed, and sheriff Channeledchain. We've got a hospital set up earlier than we need it for once, but nobody's been appointed chief of medicine yet. I ultimately had to run DFhack drain-aquifer just because the "mist generator" started overflowing, but I've set up "ponds" where any crab with nothing better to do will chuck a bucket of water down from the top of the stairs. The result is the same, so it should cheer everyone up. They'll need it, since...
Tumblr media
Roofing the main area has everyone caught in a snowstorm, and though nobody's particularly miserable at all, it's still dragging some crabs down. Oh, and I like this.
Tumblr media
Efficiency be damned, I wanted a cool bedroom setup, and looking down into the great hall right when you wake up seems pretty cool to me.
Tumblr media
An agitated giant raccoon attacks, but it's put down pretty quickly by the giant wolves. The bigger threat is our own lack of forethought.
Tumblr media
I wanted to put grates up above the farm plot there, because I'm not actually sure whether you still need outdoor plants to get sunlight and rain or whatever, or if a tile that was directly exposed to the sun at any point just counts as "outdoors" forever. I honestly think it's the latter but you know what they say about eggs and baskets and all that type of shit.
Tumblr media
The problem is that crabs kept trying to put floors down on these tiles, which was possible because they could walk over the grates to reach them, but didn't register to the game as structurally sound, so the floor just instantly collapsed every time they tried to do it. Well, at least nobody died.
Tumblr media
Except for just now. I tried to make the quantum stockpile also include rocks, and it worked! But people keep walking out in front of it and getting hit. Somehow, a shrimp survived just fine, but this metalsmith fucking died. It seems obvious to like, not walk on minecart tracks, especially if they're set to the "no" traffic setting, but it's apparently not. A bit of judicious wall use seems to fix it, though. We also make probably the ugliest fucking graveyard I've EVER set up.
Tumblr media
Right off to the side of our main noble quarters for whenever we either get a mayor, get elevated to a barony, or whatever else, I just made... I don't know. This spaghetti nightmare. I don't care. If crabs were dying in battle, then you know, I'd take it serious, I'd make a big whole thing out of it or at least plop down the quickfort windmills. But what am I supposed to feel about a guy bashing himself with the fucking minecart? Like... you get what you paid for. And now the next poor saps to die in this fortress get what you paid for too.
Tumblr media
Our first artifact is created! Its name translates to "Slippants." Ok. It just has an image of a decapod in it. Not even any particular kind of decapod in specific. But it instantly makes Hailcloistered, or jesus christ how am I supposed to remember this, Ricikikikitikik into a legendary armorsmith. Which is, you know, cool. Yeah, we could probably get some armor going. I neglected to mention I set up a metalsmithing business; I didn't want to, but there are so many metalsmiths in this fortress that they started a guild, and I always wanted to try actually placing workshops in a guild-relevant area instead of just having all the workshops in one place and guild halls somewhere else, so it's a little inefficient, but it looks cool, so who cares.
...and that right there is the last thing I wrote before I stopped playing for 8 months.
I feel like the reveal was always coming: "I was just doing this as a weird cry for help cloaked dick-deep in 69 layers of irony." Like on the surface it looks like it is just a person freaking out but then one layer lower it's actually just a guy fucking around but one more layer it's freaking out again and on and on and on. I don't know what to say besides that. I'm in the first really healthy relationship of my life and trying not to mess it up. I'm still soul-crushingly poor with no real skills or job prospects. I do still play the greatest simulation game of all time Dwarf Fortress, though much more rarely - I often boot it up with big ambitions to make some Content for The Tube, actually, but I'm simply too good at the game, so nothing interesting happens in my forts, and I end up with twenty gigabytes of footage and ten pages scribbled in a notebook covering six years of fortress management where the most interesting thing that happens is like, I set up a milling industry.
I'm not really interested in Daarunbay Detevay anymore, I'm sorry. It's not like I've deleted it, I keep pretty extensive backups of all my worlds and saves for the greatest simulation game of all time Dwarf Fortress, even though I rarely actually use them, so it's not really going anywhere. If there's any interest I could probably like, put the world folder on pixeldrain or mediafire or whatever and try to compile a mod list, but I'm not making any promises and I doubt anyone really wants that very bad anyway.
...and that right there is the last thing I wrote before I forgot about this draft for 2 months.
In that time, the Adventure Mode beta appeared. I stayed up all night waiting for it to come out, but it was still rough enough that I didn't dive all the way in just yet. However, I realized something after playing as a cockatiel man who got viciously killed for starting random fights with innocent dwarves in my own half-abandoned fortress which went to hell because apparently the AI lets all of the animals out of cages and unlocks all the doors when you retire a fort. There might still be much more to do in Daarunbay Detevay. Rat World may be doomed but there's no reason we couldn't make a party of Rat Bandits. Better yet we could embark from Rushsly on the mission of a lifetime: to kill Vakeek Malignreasons.
So I don't know. Maybe we're going to do that. Maybe I will actually make some YouTube Content and I'll never reveal there that I was the Kobblefort guy but you could see a video and recognize my loquacious schizotypal affect, and you'd be like "dude, aren't you the guy who did Kobblefort?" and I wouldn't respond or maybe I'd be like "what is that" but you'd know. You'd know it was me. But just for the record please don't go around asking Dwarf Fortress YouTubers if they're the Kobblefort guy. Because either they don't know and you have exposed a YouTube person (much more normal than Tumblr people, on the whole) to Kobblefort or you have put me on the spot. So yeah, just forget you ever read any of this, except for during the time where you're reading it. I'm trying to do the exact opposite of "death of the author" here. This is "death of the reader." No that sounds fucked up. This is "life of the author." Sure. See you soon

This is a little weird, feeling ko I'm talking to myself from years ago. Pero I understand your point of view better because it's similar to mine before.
For people like us, relinquishing control can be incredibly hard. We like to have plans A, B, C and so forth. When it works and life actually follows the trajectory we've set up, it can be hard to imagine that one day we'll be pushed to a corner without the luxury of choosing between plans A, B or anything else.
It's hard to imagine, even harder to accept, especially when it seems unnecessary, I get it. But if you look closely, trying to control our lives and who we are requires so much self restrictions. In order for us to perfectly anticipate what happens next we need to have just enough variables so we can easily factor them in and come up with our choice of outcomes, based on how we want life to be.
It's not surprising why people like us are usually goody two shoes. That's the easiest and most predictable path. Do what needs to be done as perfect as we possibly can so we'd reach the most desirable outcome. Magreview para makasagot sa exam. Get good grades to get to the university we want. Check all the required boxes so they won't have the option to say no. Only ask questions we already know the answer to, or don't ask anything at all.
I believe you know what I'm talking about and I'm pretty sure you can look back in life and find a situation when you didn't expect things to end up the way they did. When you've checked all the boxes but things didn't end up the way you thought they would.
Meron yan for sure, minsan akala natin exceptions lang cause there's very few of them. Very few kaya we can sweep them under the rug, hide or bury them kasi it's more convenient. Katulad ng it's convenient to restrict ourselves, limit our choices to keep things under control.
But one day, sooner or later, these supposed exceptions will pile up and the rug won't be enough to keep them under. Those who hold on to the illusion of control usually only learn to choose at an early age, between the emotions they can embrace and disregard. Between parts of themselves they will show off or hide. Usually we choose strength over vulnerability. Indifference over empathy. Black and whites over gray areas. Because it's easier that way, more manageable.
Pero we're bound to lose control one way or another. Minsan nangyayari na, we just don't have the courage yet to accept it. Our emotions both good and bad are bound to seep through the cracks. They're bound to resurface even when we force to keep them under. When in reality there's nothing wrong with them, a little inconvenient but that's what makes us human. We often turn our backs from it kasi we've seen how other people's 'humanity' ruined the lives around us, ours included. Kaya the answer we came up with was to be rigid, feign control. Even choosing to spare ourselves our freedom and happiness in order to do so.
That's the coping mechanism we developed when life was messed up. The kids we were, chose that for ourselves kasi we thought that's the best one. Pero one day, that child inside us would want to cry it all out and we'd be forced to allow it, kahit inconvenient, which it usually is. The child in us who wasn't allowed the privilege to have emotions, forced to mature early, learned to hold back tears.
I know full well that we only accept things and try to understand them when we're finally ready. It's not enough that others are telling us about it, nothing personal, it's just that we've learned to trust ourselves and only ourselves because for us trust is a rare and valuable currency. We have to exhaust all other options first before we relinquish control and allow things to just be. Because it's that hard.
My process took 5 years, countless research, 1 actual therapist and a lot of virtual ones, an exhausted husband, so many restarts, trial and errors but it still doesn't feel natural. I still hold back tears even when I shouldn't, quiet down when I'm upset. It's an arduous process, requires so much courage which on some days I don't have. It didn't make me into a 'better' person but it allowed me to get to know and accept who I really am. Learned to forgive myself for how I've coped. Celebrate the small seemingly unimportant wins and love myself a little better.
I think I've said more things than what I initially meant to. I just want to reiterate that we owe ourselves so so much for staying strong all this time. If it's easier and safer to keep on living life the same way, go on. Pero I hope you know that there's also so much courage in embracing our emotions, indulging the very things that makes us human. Cause after all that's what we literally are, and we can't let life stop us, no matter how cruel it's been so far.

Chapter 6: Winds of Change
/After/...
After Sandy and Wukong had returned to the others they'd let Pigsy and Tang know about the wandering spirits that were now haunting the area.
After all three of the younger members of their group had overheard because they were all demons, and while MK had the best hearing a dragon's and a bull's hearing weren't bad either. At least none of them had acted afraid. MK's only concern had been why the spirits had been huddled around his father's body. Wukong hadn't any real answers.
After they'd eaten their fills, with Sandy and Redson scraping the pot of every last bit, they packed up their things into the T.E.A. and checked to make sure they had everything. They were nearly ready to go.
After they put the kids to bed, the three of them and Wukong curled up together with Moe on Sandy's larger cot with as many blankets as they could manage to weasle out of the others. They were on their way with plenty of time to get as far away from the destruction before night fell.
However, once they'd made it just outside of the circle of destruction all Hell broke loose. A howling wind slammed into the van from all sides. The wind jerked the vehicle around, as Sandy fought the winds to keep them from tipping over the kids were awake and instantly in the back of the van. Redson had Moe tucked under one arm, the cat looked both content with his current perch, but frazzled at the jostling they were all being subjugated to.
"Hey," Wukong said over the howling of the winds. "Is there anywhere we can hunker and wait for this to stop? I mean, we all just ate less than an hour ago and I dunno about anyone else, but I'm feeling a little queasy."
Pigsy snarled. "Then get up here!" He snapped. "If you can see anything, we'll hunker down."
Wukong made his way to the front. A few seconds later. "Go right. Hold, now straight."
At the directions, Sandy fought the wheel as he trusted them all to the king. Sooner than expected they rolled into a cave that cut the howling winds off. They all breathed out a sigh of relief.
Tang grimaced. "I don't think we got very far from the battlefield."
"Do you think that was caused by the ghosts?" Pigsy asked, fear creeping into his voice.
Tang shrugged. "No idea. Do you have /any/ idea why the spirits would be haunting Macaque's body?" He asked Wukong.
Wukong sighed. "I don't...know."
"You paused." Pigsy accused.
"I have theories. Guesses. No concrete knowledge. Nothing based on proof, you know?" Wukong confessed.
"Well, my father once said that your guesses were almost always right. Let's hear them." Redson said.
"Ok. So, what do you know about my staff?"
Tang looked deep in thought. "I've heard many of our foes call it a big heavy stick, and many have believed that only those most worthy may lift it or wield it. Your exploits with it are written down and talked about all the time at the annual conferences I go to. We /know/ that it was a pillar in Ao Guang's palace, but as to it's origins? That debate has started twenty-two fist fights; has caused eighty-three arrests and has resulted in at least two duels to the death*."
Wukong looked at Tang with some concern and also a bit of excitement. "Really? People fight about this?" He asked, a slow small grin forming across his face.
"Why yes!"
"Oh lord, you just had to." Pigsy muttered.
"I won't say what camp I /personally/ am in, but many scholars believe that you stole the central pillar from Ao Guang's treasury causing a great disturbance throughout the East Sea until the Journey. The other theory is that the Riyu Jingu Bang is of celestial origins, given that it does the will of the wielder, and that it was once used to tame the Great Flood."
Wukong looked delighted. "So, I hope you don't try to punch me, but it was definitely /not/ Ao Guang's anything. He stole it first. The Riyu Jingu Bang was created using celestial iron from a falling star that Taibai Jinxing* threw down for Yu the Great* to use to forge into a great many tools. Instead, the Great Engineer, forged the celestial iron into the Riyu Jingu Bang, a rod to measure the flood waters that could also be used to cleave mountains in half or dig out canals with ease."
Tang looked ecstatic. His grin looking a little manic and a bit too much like the Not Mayor the group had faced not even a day ago. "Can I get you to record that for me?" He asked.
Wukong looked amused. "Is there money riding on this?"
"Yes, actually. The Pot has been in existence since before I was born and has been added to every year. There is /so much/ money riding on this." Tang exclaimed.
"Oh really? Enough to pay off your debts to me, freeloader?" Pigsy huffed.
"With interest. As well as pay my estranged brother-in-law for bailing me out of jail three times and paying the lawyer fees for getting me off with self-defense*. And, I'd still have a very tidy sum left over. Even with having to share with the other nineteen current members who are on the /correct/ side of this."
Wukong laughed. "Alright. Alright. Tell you what, once we get out of this mess I'll go look through my own treasury. I know I have some scrolls dating back to before the Xia Dynasty*, and a few that date to the time during the Xia. I'm pretty sure I know where they are. They actually explain where and what the Riyu Jingu Bang is."
"Did you actually go looking for information on your magical staff?" Mei asked, now intrigued.
Wukong blushed a bit. "I was younger then. I wanted to know everything about anything I'd just found or stole or had been given." He said shyly. "I stopped caring quite so much when it became obvious that no matter how much I learned about the tools; the clothes; the cultures or even the people of the lands I visited I would never be respected by anyone."
While the others looked appalled, Tang looked infuriated. Wukong ignored them.
"Anyway," the monkey continued. "My staff is actually an incredibly powerful celestial tool and weapon used /long/ before I was even born to vanquish demons and evil gods. Yu the Great had the staff transformed into a hand-plough when he killed Xiangyao*, the nine-headed black eel demon who would have succeeded in ruining Yu's work if Yu had not struck him down."
"So, I believe that at least in part, the souls that the Lady Bone Demon trapped and used to complete her mech are attracted to both the celestial residue of the Riyu Jingu Bang that was left on Macaque and Macaque's own celestial nature. But, like I said, I don't know for sure because they weren't huddled around myself or MK, just Macaque."
"Maybe because he was already dead, and had been harmed by the Bone Demon as well?" Tang said.
"Maybe..."
MK's lips thinned. "The wind hasn't stopped howling at all, and I don't think it's a normal wind."
"What do you mean, Noodle Boy?"
"I can hear voices mixed into the wind. Begging. Screaming. Crying. Demanding we give them Macaque."

*If you don't have skin in the game, do not try to correct an academic. They will never find your body.
*Taibai Jinxing translates out to Great White Golden Star and is the Chinese name for the planet Venus. Taibai Jinxing was also the deity who suggested to the Jade Emperor that they should give Wukong the meaningless titles of Keeper of the Heavenly Horses and Guardian of the Celestial Peaches of Immortality.
*Yu the Great or Yu the Engineer was a man that may have lived sometime around either 2300-2200 BCE or 1920 BCE. He was said to have successfully diverted the water of a great flood that lasted 20 years along the Yellow River Basin.
*Yes, Tang did get into fights at his academic conferences. Yes, he did get arrested three times, two for fighting and once for killing another man. No, he did not start that one. That's why the lawyer was able to get him off with self-defense. Also, he's going to be a very rich man in a month.
*The Xia Dynasty was supposedly founded by Yu the Great after he was appointed emperor by Emporer Shun after his successful diversion of the water from the Great Flood. It likely never existed or wasn't as grandiose as the myths made it out to be.
*Xiangyao is also another name for Xiangliu. I'm using the older name to differentiate between the actual mythological minister of Gonggong and the Season 5 "villain".
"MK?" Asked a voice in the void. "That's what you call yourself, right?"
MK turned. Standing before him was Macaque, the monkey who the Lady Bone Demon had possessed. She'd probably been possessing him the entire time. Now, though, it was obvious that Macaque was alone with no lingering coldness or cruelty in his eyes or in the small sad smile he shot MK's way.
"Yeah. Yeah, I call myself MK. It started off short for Mystery Kid because that's what Pigsy and Mr. Tang used to call me before they settled on a name." MK said with a self-conscious chuckle. "Of course, it doesn't really stand for that anymore."
"I see."
"Sometimes I wish I could remember what my parents must have named me. I mean, I must have parents, right?" MK said before sighing. "Not that it matters, since they must not have wanted me."
"I did." Macaque said quietly causing MK to look up at him in shock. "I did want you. You are a stone monkey like myself and Wukong and Yuan and Mahou before us. I made you because I wanted you. I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry I let my anger and hatred for Wukong get the better of me. I didn't intend to leave you alone like I had been."
"I..." MK paused, took a breath and shifted closer to the dark furred monkey. "If I'm a stone monkey then why don't I look like you or Monkey King?"
"You're glamored pretty thickly. Come here." Macaque said shuffling closer to MK and reach out to him. MK closed the gap letting Macaque touch his face and run his hands through his hair before Macaque gently cupped his ears and what looked like a bubble of golden light increased and then popped off of MK's skin leaving him with fur; three tails and six softly glowing petal-like ears, like Macaque's own.
"There's my Xiaoge." Macaque said quietly. "My little song. I'm so sorry, kiddo. I wish I had more time."
"More time?"
"Yeah. When you destroyed the Lady Bone Demon, she was still possessing my physical form. You sent her soul straight through to destruction, but in the process..."
"I killed you!" MK exclaimed, his face falling and a sob came from his throat.
"Sh...sh." Macaque whispered as he drew the young man into his arms and held him tightly. "None of that, ok. I wanted to tell you that it's going to be okay. I'm so happy that you grew up and made friends and I am so proud of you. I loved you when all you were was a stone egg I'd sing to late at night. I love you now. I left the spell that dampens your hearing down to normal people levels in place, but you should have...you should have your Grandpa Wukong teach it to you, I know he knows it. I heard him learn it. You'll be ok. Just listen with your top set of ears before you listen to Wukong about anything. And..." Macaque held MK out from him to look at him one last time as his form began to waver. "Could you tell Pigsy and Tang that I'm grateful they were there for you when I couldn't be."
"I can tell them that, yeah." MK sniffed and wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. "I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"I killed you."
"I let you. She was trying to escape, and she would have made sure I didn't survive her leaving my body. She would have ripped my soul apart." Macaque said quietly. "Her form was never physical, and the only way to kill her normally would have taken the holiest of people with the holiest of weapons. I held her in my body and let you finish us both. It was the only way. I'm sorry, but we don't have any more time. I love you, my son."
With that Macaque vanished into the void.
*
So, AU idea where each Celestial Primate parents the one right after it. So, the Gibbon was a father to the Horse Monkey and the Horse Monkey was supposed to mother Wukong, but she died suddenly before Wukong was made. Wukong was away when Macaque was born and Macaque was all alone for the whole of his life because of this.

Back with a slightly more serious request, but do you have some headcanons for what it would be like to be one of the knights while also having chronic pain? Feel free to ignore this of course, it is quite specific lol
are you kidding me laurie, you're giving me a wonderful idea here, as if i could possibly ignore any merlin requests, especially from you, that's just ridiculous. ofc i'll write this! i was debating for a little bit whether i'd do all of them separate and then throw in some romantic aspects as well but i decided against that, so we'll see how this turns out and if maybe you're gonna have to deal with all of them as potential love interests too
- First of all, this is assuming you’re randomly joining them in that episode at the end of season three, kind of like Percival but not at all like Percival. No associations, except for possibly Merlin. Don’t ask me how, maybe you were a merchant who coincidentally came across them and knows how to use a sword. Maybe you’ve been trying to become a knight all your life. Who knows. Anyway
- At the start, it takes a ton of explaining for them to understand. Like, a ton. Some of them may get it easier, but you're gonna have to spend like an hour explaining it to Arthur and Percival (the latter is very concerned). I think Lancelot and Elyan will actually get it the fastest, idk Elyan just strikes me as the type who doesn't mind it much and Lancelot's just so respectful that when you say that you can manage most days, he accepts it and moves on. He's not fussing, he doesn't need to understand all of it, he just needs to know that you're okay.
- The way this came up was probably because you had a bad day and five out of five knights got sO worried thinking that you were injured somehow that they gave you negative two seconds to explain and instead wrapped you in every type of clothing they could find and made you warm soup and checked like four times for any blood and either Percival or Gwaine 100% carried you, depending on if you were in Camelot definitely straight to Gaius.
- After explaining, it also takes the same amount of, if not more, time to run by them if and what help you need, and whether you want it, and how you want it, and especially how you want them to treat you. Like you definitely need to be comfortable talking about your boundaries with them, because let's be real, basically only Lancelot is able to somewhat pick up on social cues without necessarily looking for them.
- But in the end once you've talked about it, they try their absolute best to remind themselves and each other of this. It may take a bit of time for them to get around to treating you like they did before and it certainly takes a lot of time for them to (if you said you're comfortable) go physically "rougher" again like they do with each other.
- Whatever you do and say you should never underestimate how absolutely willing these men are to work and to help and to support. Like whatever you say about your illness will count as a law to them - if you ask about this, they'll just repeatedly shrug and tell you that "it's your body and you know best" and then continue to do literally whatever you ask for.
- At some point, if sooner or later after that first introduction to your illness, you come up with basically a whole manual for different kinds of days. If you say you're having a good day, they'll know to treat you differently than when you say you're having a bad day. And as I said: they're literally ready to do whatever.
- Percival will always offer to carry you and when Gwaine sees you're doing worse he absolutely will too, though genuinely I would advise you to choose carefully based on whether you want to be and feel safe (pick Percival) or just have a fun time with a high risk of bumping against trees and walls and horses (pick Gwaine). Like the others will probably carry you as well and if you ask, definitely without any sign of discontent, but Gwaine and Percival are the ones who are most likely to offer themselves all the time.
- You'll make a wonderful knight anyway, none of them would ever dare question that or your skills. They won't pretend you're a baby. They'll give you chainmail and a sword and take you into battle to fight alongside them. They'll armwrestle you and make you collect firewood and Arthur will still have you take watches and still give you all responsibility for the horses at night.
- They're very, very protective though, so you can bet your ass that if there's something that they can avoid happening to you they absolutely will. Even if this is just a little task that's easily done. Like, they'll do anything ranging from sweeping to fucking killing a guy. Imagine Gwaine cheekily manoeuvring a wet towel out of your hands and cleaning the table you made a mess off, or Arthur straight up giving you days off of patrol to do it himself. This is not at all something to say "you're ill, you can't do this" because they know that you can, this is just a "This could possibly inconvenience you so I'm doing it for you"
- okay as I said I had some romantic things in mind beforehand, so last but not least I'll quickly get those out of my brain all in one and all in very quick, very short sentences:
Gwaine would make a point of picking flowers and collecting sweet, small things for you to distract you when you're having a not so good day, it's basically become a ritual.
Percival would make sure not to leave your side and, if you're okay with it, always have his arm around you or have you lean your head on his shoulder, just a little physical contact for grounding.
Lancelot would spend even more time with you - if you don't send him away - so that first of all, you're never bored, always having someone to talk to, and also that if you do need help, you won't need to wait for it for an hour.
Leon would be a bit of all, just being there with you, helping you as much as he can and as much as you allow. just handing you the water bottle before you can ask, helping you onto your horse, stuff like that
and I don't know shit about Elyan so

The Truths Found On Petram Viridios IV (5/5)
Tumblr media
A/N: The last chapter to this fic. It's a long one and I gotta say that I've had a lot of fun with this one. After I post this chapter, I'll be sure to post the masterpost for this fic. And of course it'll be available on ao3 soon enough.
Read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
__________
Chapter 5: Adore You
If you had to draw a map to find the way home once you were captivated by the gaze of those trustworthy, soft eyes of his, you would surely run out of ink; pools of blue, unwavering in their affection, drew you in, and you were willing to drown in them. There were facets about them that fascinated you as much as the scales of a butterfly did; they did not shimmer, but they gleamed and sparkled; it's what made you pause and search for a wisp of an acquaintance that very first time you saw him; finding a familiarity that threatened to sweep you away. Why you even found fire in those eyes; it was there in his moments of determination and passion. Oh, how their color shifted with his moods was a type of magic you wanted to spend the rest of your life being mesmerized by. To be sure he wasn't mistaken, he dare not blink; exhibiting the full spectrum of what Billie Eilish described as ocean eyes; he had to be sure. "Y-you do?"
"Yes," you giggled. "I do."
It wouldn't occur to you till later, that he had given you a choice. For instead of the typical proposal question, where it was more asserted, Rick asked in a manner in which there was equal footing; it spoke volumes of the respect he had for you. With shaky hands, he slipped a ring whose stone was as clear and blue as his eyes and cut perfectly like a rose, the band covered in gold vines and silver leaves which weaved together; he made it himself, and if you thought back far enough, you could remember when he was ambiguous about his plans to create a new type of stone. Honestly, you didn't realize it would be for this.
"Gosh," he sniffled. "I-I promised myself that I w-wouldn't cry."
But cry he would; fat, sloppy tears that blinded one's vision. He wiped at his eyes with the sleeve of his sweater, and fought to regain composure, but lost to the new wave which followed. You gently pried his hands away from his face, softening at his tear-stained cheeks. "It's okay, you can cry if you want to. I already know how tender you are."
Goodness, how long had he wanted to do this? For while it had almost been two years in which he had last attempted to, it might've been on his mind for much longer than that; eating away at his clarity; at the self-confidence that was torn down and repaired daily. You were grateful and proud that this man wanted you; that he finally gathered the courage to ask and do as he intended and wanted. You….you had wanted this to happen, but did he know that? Your ocean of inquisitions thought otherwise.
However, it was time to quiet and quell his despondent thoughts. Your fingers dug into the collar of his sweater; the tang of nervous sweat and something so him which wafted off him made you yearn to bring him closer. The puffiness about his eyes didn't discourage you from pressing a kiss at the corner of them and from his throat came a choked sob and you were surrounded by the sounds of his disbelief; this cacophony was breaking your heart. There had to be something you could do to ease him. "Ricardo," you started, "considering the suddenness of the occasion, should we, in like fashion…my dear honey man, would you like to get married today?"
This new tidbit caught him off guard; so much so that he stopped crying; good. Now, he was the one who was unsure of whether this was real life or a simulation. He ran his fingers through his hair, double-checked his equipment, sprayed himself with water, and completed equations that had taken this earth dimension's leading mathematicians decades to understand. What you thought was odd was when he caught a pigeon, scanned its anatomy, and found it was sound; you were going to have to ask him about it later. "Rick, did you hear me?"
"Y-yes," he focused, "but what d-do you mean today? How?"
You figured he would have easily come to a conclusion, but then again, what do spacemen have to do with the price of bread?
"I mean that we don't have to wait if you don't want to." You slid your palm over his tattoo, memorizing with your fingertips where his skin was slightly raised. "We can just go down to the justice of the peace if you'd like."
"And y-you would be my wife today?"
"Yes," you giggled. "I think that's how it works."
"But what about a-a…"
"A wedding ceremony?" you interrupted. "Well, we can have one later. We can plan it however you want, and invite all our friends. There can be so much celebration that we'll be knocked out for a week. Until then, I just want to make you happy, and I believe the sooner the better. Okay? So, if we're going to do this, just tell me now and I'll go get the proper paperwork."
It never ceased to amaze you how easily he flitted through emotions as though it were the weather, and with vigor, he lifted you up and vibrated with joy. "Boy, golly gee…this really - this really razzes my b-berries! This is…wow, I-I can't believe it."
You couldn't believe his word choice either. "Oh, you better believe it, because now you're stuck with me and I have you all to myself. However, you're going to have to put me down now because the office closes at five. There are a few things I need to do before then."
Letting you down, he happily waved goodbye despite the fact that it wouldn't take long to get what you needed for this impromptu occasion. Though, when you entered your house, you took a moment to think about your father. There were things you still didn't understand, like why he never told you about his friendship with Rick, or why you two never really discussed what he'd do if you got married; if he had been here, maybe you two would have talked about which flowers would look best as centerpieces; like whether roses or mums were cheerful enough or if this really was a good idea; if such an age gap was surmountable. Yet, in a way you felt as though you were honoring him; for your father and your mother had been unconventional and had gotten married without all the showy displays then road tripped a bit before settling here; you were simply following tradition.
Maybe, you didn't have to know about the why's and what-ifs, but focusing on what you could do seemed a whole lot easier to do. You kicked off your sneakers and dashed upstairs. You knew where your important documents were, but you thought that choosing a cute outfit would take a little longer. You wanted a certain vibe, one that would make things easier on him and then it came to you; why not revisit an old favorite; one that reminded you of his eyes; always, forever blue.
When you returned, you found him pacing around. He was deep in thought, and it took a moment for him to notice that you had returned. Almost comically, his eyes widened as he took in your appearance, and he started to cry again. "That's th-the dress. From that one time."
"It sure is."
With a twirl, you flaunted the blue chiffon dress, and felt like a dream; his visible adoration was not lost on you. It was a relief that this time you hadn't taken an hour to fuss or worry that you weren't dressed for the part, and you weren't wearing shoes which would kill your feet, but instead rocked some converse. "These shoes are made for walking and that's just what I'll do."
Unlike you, Zeta-7 wanted to fuss and choose something dressier, but you somehow managed to convince him that his blue button-up would be fine, and no tie was necessary; hidden ray guns were allowed just in case this happened to be the day that the Gromflomites attacked; not even Earth-based military scanners would be able to detect them. Though, you did allow him to fix up his hair, because one, you thought he was quite handsome with it combed back, and two, it's what he felt he needed to do to look the part. "How do I-I look?"
"Like the man I'm going to marry. Are you ready handsome?"
With a nod, he grabbed the folder with all the documents he needed. "Y-you bet."
______________
At the courthouse, the entire security staff grouped together and teased you about your keys; you should've known that you'd face trouble once you went through the metal detector; you had a lot of keychains; they were from the days when you and your father would go shopping together. Like Rick, he liked yard sales and thrift stores; sometimes he'd get grab bags and there would be vintage keychains, and he'd give them to you knowing you'd like them. You were told by one of the older guards that it wasn't natural for a grown woman to have a set of keys that weighed five pounds. Zeta-7 began to worry, but you told him you could handle it, and you figured the guards were bored and had nothing else to do. What you didn't tell them was that the main reason your keys were heavy was that you were carrying two sets; yours and your father's old keys; Rick knew, but he respected your wishes to leave it be.
Despite this, you two made your way to the right office; it only took fifteen minutes of going to lobby after lobby, free coffee, and endless rugs in all this indoor nothingness. And nobody knew better than Rick when it came to how much you hated paperwork, but nonetheless, you went through the painstaking process of signing this and that, wondering why they didn't make it easier for people by asking yes or no questions; this better not become someone's confetti. Rick breezed through it all, and you were slightly jealous that he knew what he was doing, but it was due to the fact that citadel paperwork was a lot more frustrating and difficult; he had to go through stacks of it weekly; poor man. While he sat quietly, you were in-between forms that had to be signed in triplicate and heard the gossip coming from the people who were working in the back of the office. What they didn't know was that their ignorance made you more determined; you'd fought your own expectations, that of others, as well as what seemed right to do long enough and no one, not even death itself was going to stop you from doing this; it was the best thing you could ever do for yourself and for him as well. You breathed a sigh of relief when you and Rick finally signed the marriage certificate; finally, it was done, and he watched rapturously as you set down the pen so that he could kiss you without refrain.
If you hadn't known better, you'd say the world shied away; dissolving into a plane of nothingness as he enveloped you with a strength that was deceptive for a man of his years; he had become a little more confident; it might've taken a few years, but all you knew was that it suited him. Being nurtured and cared for, as well as loved in the right sort of environment did wonders on Zeta-7; so much so, that he could hold the world in the palm of his hand and still manage not to damage it. It wasn't shocking that some found this outward display sweet, and you almost had hope for humankind, but then there was a laugh or two from the back; you made a mental note to consider moving off Earth. No one was going to ruin this moment for him, and relishing the moment, you chased his mouth for a second kiss; you know, to prove your point.
And if you hadn't already been proud of him, what made you even prouder was what he said on the way out. "Please stop laughing at m-my wife. Th-that's very rude."
His wife? Yes, you were his wife now. It's strange how you could wake up and wonder what you should have for breakfast and be here where you were now; in a whole new chapter of your life; wondering what will come next. Confusing yes, but not something to be afraid of; you welcomed this happy transition.
Back at the car, you were still recovering from his earlier outburst; the like which was almost out of character. "Did you see the look on her face? I thought it was going to fall off with how far her jaw dropped. Wasn't it a sight?"
Though, he was busy staring at the ring on his own hand which you had picked out when you two made a stop at a consignment shop earlier. It wasn't that complex like yours, but he loved it. "All I could see was - was you."
"You flirt."
You gave his shoulder a playful shove, and in turn, he laughed a full-on belly laugh; this happy noise was music to your ears. "Gosh, I-I mean it. Y-you, look so pretty today." A bit shyly, he commented. "Blue looks very good on you."
"Thank you. So, how should we celebrate? A trip to the moon perhaps? Going across the universe? Maybe a kaiju fight with Matango? Or watching Spiderman 2? Honestly, I'm game for anything."
You had decent shoes on and didn't care what he wanted to do because you were happy if he was happy. And as though it were just another afternoon, he glowed with happiness when he asked. "Mrs. Sanchez, do you - do you want to go get some ice cream?"
Some things will never change and you didn't mind that. "I'd love to. As the author, L.M. Montgomery once said, 'I guess ice cream is one of those things that are beyond imagination.' And, you know, it's so true. I intend to go all out with the toppings today. It's certainly that kind of occasion."
______
He couldn't seem to want to let go of your hand; as though the world would fall away if he didn't and that this would turn out to be a cruel dream. Still, you humored and spoiled him. As intended, you got all the toppings; Rick thought it was a kids dream come true with the amount of candy you had in your waffle bowl. And since you had enough to share, you took the liberty to feed him. He chatted on; offering charming stories from his band days; unlike other Ricks who were in a rock band called Flesh Curtains, his band had been a jazz and bossa nova trio; the band name had been comprised of a numerical equation; if you had named them you would've called them the Zeta Bytes.
Now, Rick wasn't a messy eater, but during one of his more excitable stories, he spilled a bit on the corner of his mouth. Ready with a napkin, you wiped it away, and couldn't help but laugh at how boyish it was. Giving your hand a squeeze, he absentmindedly brushed his thumb on the back of your hand; adoration coloring his voice. “You're t-t-too good to me.”
"There's no such thing. If anything, I gotta spoil you rotten."
You found no hindrance in his mood and this time he didn't think twice about kissing you then and there as he liked while you were still holding the napkin; fear and shame of public displays of affection being one less thing to worry about now. Who cared if your ice cream was melting, because your heart was melting; his mouth tasted of chocolate and promises. A soft chuckle escaped him as he pulled away; his promise whispered against your lips. "I-I promise I'll be good t-t-to you."
Being loved suited him; it really, really did wonders on his countenance and it made you wonder what else he could now do.
_________
By now you were a little tired, but Ricks contagious energy invigorated your spirits; you bet he could've come up with an invention and completed it today if he stayed this hyped up. Instead, he used that energy to make fresh rolls to go with the leftover acorn squash soup; you hadn't been that hungry, but you enjoyed it nonetheless. And when dinner had been eaten, you helped him with the dishes; nothing you hadn't done before, but his spirit was lighter and more at ease; he even bumped your hip with his as a gesture of playfulness. After cleaning up the kitchen, he decided that he'd like to take a shower and refresh himself and in the meantime, you stepped out into the backyard to enjoy the beauty of the night. In this part of town, despite the light pollution, you could see a fair amount of stars.
You had never studied astronomy, but Rick had shown you in diagrams and in textbooks of their names and explained how they were formed; to him, their complexity was like poetry, and it made them beautiful. You couldn't recite it by memory, but you had a feeling that beyond your current comprehension perhaps there was life amongst those heavenly bodies, despite the heat or deadly gases; if you had learned anything about space, it was that worlds were more along the lines of art and beauty than fields of science which were easily explained. Yet, in the air, where there was a sweet perfume, thick, but intoxicating, only where you were currently mattered; you saw that in the leftmost part of the yard there was jasmine which was currently in bloom; its blanket of flowers reminding you of snow. Hadn't you read of this somewhere before? Maybe.
In the grass near your feet, grasshoppers leaped away, and crickets chirped their songs. And you relished the strong breezes and the song of the night which may consume a melancholic heart if it were searching for tragedies instead of sweet dreams. And it had only been a few hours ago when you had thought that all of which transpired might've been a dream. Though, whatever truths that had come to light in the hours after the simulation, you were glad of them.
In the dark, sights and sounds were heightened and mesmerizing, albeit curious in its own right; if it hadn't been for the sound barrier Rick had on his property, you would've heard the obnoxious sound of the next-door neighbor's TV as they watched infomercials. Still, it was a beautiful night. Sitting on the bench which overlooked the whole yard, you thought of what wonderful things you'd like to share with Rick, and then he found you. For his part, he had changed into something more relaxed; into a light blue button-down that was similar to the one he was wearing earlier, but this one was softer, and it was paired with navy pants; it reminded you of blue pants Rick with his attire, but it was cute and suited him. With him, he had brought over a tray of goodies and you two ate cookies and cakes and drank earl grey under the moonlit night.
The pause in conversation gave allowances for observations. For example, you took a good long look at him as he sipped his tea; admiring how casual he appeared tonight. Without his labcoat or sweater, his identity seemed separate from that of his dimension jumping, scientist self; making way for the person deep inside; the friendly neighbor who won your heart without even trying. He noticed eventually that you had been staring at him, and he broke the silence with his inquiry. "What are y-you thinking about?"
"I'm thinking about you cutie. You um….you look really good in those blue pants of yours. Thinking of taking up modeling anytime soon?"
"N-no," he answered with an air of obliviousness that you found endearing. "not unless my next work assignment requires it. Gee, why do you ask?"
"Hmm, it's because you wear your clothes well. I always thought you did, but I don't believe I ever mentioned it."
He ruminated on what you said for a few minutes, before setting down his cup. "Did you - did you always find me attractive?"
"No," you confessed. "but you're the only person I've ever really been attracted to. I…..I always liked the fact that our relationship was built on something more substantial. You see, the more I got to know you, the more irresistible I found you. Though," you winked. "those teeth of yours were always too cute to resist."
This truth of yours made him comfortable enough to relinquish one of his own. "C-can I tell you a secret?"
"It's not much of a secret if you tell me dear, but you can tell me anyway."
Wringing his hands together, he confessed solemnly. "That day y-you tripped on the sidewalk nearby my house, I-I almost decided not to cross the road."
Not cross the road? Hmm, it had been an option. In your mind's eye, you could imagine it; the tall, lanky figure of a man debating against his better judgment on what he ought to do; so close but so far; knowing that he was altering the course of his future and putting yours at risk. Poor man, having to wallow over a moral dilemma like that. "Why is that?"
"Gosh, y-you….I didn't want to take advantage of the situation."
It could've been taken that way, but you never thought so. "So what changed your mind?"
"I thought you were going to cry, and I-I didn't… I didn't want you to suffer anymore. I thought t-to myself, that if I got t-t-to know you, then you wouldn't have to be lonely anymore."
When he said this, you nearly couldn't look at him; not because he knew more than he let on, but because who knows what paths you two would've taken if he hadn't shown up that day. Tears bit at the back of your eyes, and your nails bit into your palms. "Dear, love isn't always a cure for heartache," He tensed up at this, but you knew you had to tell him. You weren't upset because you had guessed as much, but being assured of it cemented the fact. "but I'm sure that without you, without your friendship, I might not be here right now. I think I was depressed, and from time to time I still feel that way. I…I have thought of ways to make my troubles end, ways you might not have been proud of, but you've shown me a better way to live. I think…no, I know that by expanding my horizons, I understand now that there's so much to look forward to, and not to take life for granted. Why," you paused, fighting the tears which threatened to fall. "you reminded me that I gotta make the most of this crazy, unpredictable life, and I'm happy that I'll get to do that with you."
He understood and accepted this answer and gave you a look of adoration and pride; the like that you hoped you'd always remember. And when you two were done with tea, you both took a walk about the garden. The sweet perfume of jasmine intermingled with that of the scent of his soap, and combined with the candor of his speech made this place feel like a well of comfort. He followed behind you as you two spoke, and you were conscious of the fact that with his freshly washed hair brushed back, it made him more appealing. His hands were in want of yours as he matched your pace, and you felt slightly mischievous as you'd skip or teased him to catch you; it wasn't long until he gathered you in his arms and laughed, and you asked without much seriousness for him to let you go, but while he loosened his grip, he didn't let go entirely. "Gosh, y-you make me feel so young. It - it feels so good to have you in my arms."
"Oh, really?" you giggled. "That's great to hear."
Pressing a kiss to your temple, he sighed. "It's unfortunate that I'm so old."
"That's okay. I like you as you are. It goes well with your personality."
"Thank you mi corazón. It feels good to hear that. However, can I-I ask you something?"
"Mhm."
"¿Si hubiera s-sido más joven, habría marcado la diferencia?"
"If you had been younger? I don't know. Possibly," you admitted. "I might've been less reluctant about my feelings at the beginning, but I truly don't know. I'd like to think that I'd still would've fallen for you anyway. You're a wonderful man Ricardo, you don't have to doubt that, anyone can see that. It doesn't matter how old you are, but it's who you are."
"Y-you're right." With reluctance, he allowed his arms to drop to his sides, and he wondered. "It um - it's getting late. Should I-I walk you home?"
Was he forgetting that he didn't have to? Maybe not. Perhaps he needed a sign; one that said that any suggestion of further intimacy was alright. "I thought I was home." you answered, "Don't you want me to stay?"
Scratching the back of his neck, he nodded. "Yes, I-I-I-I do."
"Then it's settled. We'll have a big sleepover," you brightened. "and it'll never have to end. I'll borrow a pair of your pj's and hog all the blankets because I'll get cold."
"And in - in the morning," he added warmly, "w-we can have pancakes."
"Yeah, and watch enough interdimensional cable to make us go blind."
"But I-I might have to work tomorrow."
"Oh. Well, then I guess I'll just have to eat all your snacks until you come back. We might have to take a trip to Costco at some point because they sell these mushroom crisps that are to die for."
Standing under the persimmon tree, he stepped forward and gave your shoulder a squeeze. "Y-you can have whatever you want," With a strong arm slipping around your waist, you felt almost shy at the way he smiled protectingly down at you. His warm breath ghosted about your ear, and his voice was above a whisper as he confessed. “because I-I-I finally got you princess and I'm not - I'm not going t-to let you go.”
At the sound of this pet name, you felt a slight warmth rush to your cheeks, but you didn't laugh it off as you had once but agreed with warmth. “You may do as you please, Mr. Sanchez.”
And so he did. Without hesitation, he lifted your chin and brushed your lips with his thumb. His eyes sparkling with humor, promise, and a confidence that was somehow so very appropriate on his face. "I love you. I-I-I always have. From the time I first held your hand, I knew it had to be you. I would've been a fool if I - if I hadn't tried. Even now, it's hard to believe, but it's starting to sink in."
"Me too. It's unbelievable, but it's true and we have the paperwork to prove it."
Leaning down, he pressed a sweet kiss onto your lips. It was so gentle, it was as though you might break if he tried otherwise. Kissing you again, he sighed against your lips. "It's beautiful out t-tonight."
"It is."
Pressing a hand to his cheek, you softened. "But I think I'm ready to call it a night. Why don't we go in?"
Weaving his fingers with yours, he softened. "Okay."
You used to think to yourself and wonder if his house would ever be ready to receive you, but what you now realized was that it had always been ready, and only you had been waiting for it all to catch up; for him to know what he wanted and to be courageous and say; for you to know what you needed, and to accept that being yourself didn't make you any less attractive or unique and that you weren't alone; you had never been alone, for he had always been waiting. His home, why it was always home, but it was always home because he was what grounded you and you were what grounded him. And you felt so married to him then, and everything felt as it should. Nothing had really changed, except for a title, and a promise; for you two were friends as you had always been; him the happy go lucky old man, and you the silly neighbor who met him by accident, but you couldn't deny that you loved him with your entire being and so did he. As promised, he intended to do everything in his power to protect you, even as you two were getting ready for bed. His body seemed to curl around you as to shield you from whatever monsters could be hiding in the dark.
So, when it happened that you rested your head upon his chest and felt the temptation of sleep washing over you, you pressed a light kiss to his cheek and confessed softly. "I can't wait to wake up next to you."

HOW TO BUY A HOUSE - IN 3 EASY STEPS
There is a lot of confusion out there about how to become a Homeowner so I thought I would take a moment and put it into Average Joe speak. That, and in my experience, some people go about it totally backwards which is counter productive to the end goal.
STEP 1. - ASSESS YOUR FINANCES
This is fairly simple. Eliminate non-essentials from your spending budget and stick it in the piggy bank. Modify spending habits to generate savings. Make short-term lifestyle changes.
It's just temporary and if canceling monthly memberships (Netflix, Gyms, Any Subscriptions), adjusting your shopping habits [I got some great tips for this], or eliminating other non-essential spending allows you to keep more money in your pocket to get a home versus flushing rent dollars down the proverbial toilet? Bit of a no-brainer if you ask me.
Bottom line is you have to have money ready-to-hand for the transaction. Even with the "zero down" options like VA and some USDA loans; just to name a couple.
There are inspections, appraisals, escrow funds, repairs, home warranty policies, property taxes, closing costs, and other such considerations that must be paid in order to get a home of your own.
"Do Not Save What Is Left After Spending; Instead Spend What is Left After Saving" - Warren Buffett
Figure out what kind of a down payment your financial situation will allow for. The more, the better, but very few people I know got 20% of the purchase price [a.k.a. - conventional/bank loan] sitting around collecting dust. Good news is you don't necessarily have to have that much.
One of the most common loans is a FHA that only asks for 3-5% down AND there are down payment assistance programs out there if you are really Stuck Like Chuck when it comes to finances. NOTE: This does NOT mean they are going to give you ALL of your down payment; you gotta have some chips in that poker game too.
I like to recommend that people shoot for at least 6-8% of the purchase price of the "kind of home they want" just to make sure all the bases are covered - down payment AND cost(s) of the transaction. Folks, that's a lesser down payment than Owner Finance options for the same "kind of home" as Owners generally ask for 10-15% down.
This total can be a combination of self-savings, down payment assistance, assets that can be used as collateral against the loan, monetary or tangible gifts from friends/family members in some few cases, and more.
Each person is unique and different in how that 6-8% manifests and lenders can vary in what form(s) of down payment they will accept.
EXAMPLE:
Purchase Price: $150k
FHA Down Pymt (3-5%): $4,500 - $7,500
Other Cost(s): (3% +/-): $4,500
Total Savings Needed: $9,000 - $12,000
Kill some bills, sell your "junk" - we all got crap laying around the house we don't use worth money in various amounts - and modify spending habits in a positive manner.
If you are a two car family... can you get by with just one vehicle on a temporary basis [turn that car, and its bills, "into" a house]? Perhaps you have a skill set or piece of equipment that can earn you extra cash here and there on your terms? What changes to your lifestyle can you make that will put another dime or dollar into that kitty bucket?
Finally, do whatever it is you need to do to put those greenbacks into a savings method you can stick with. Whether that is a traditional banking institution or an old shoe box under the bed; you do you. If this means you have to ask someone in a position of trust to hold it so you don't spend it? Guess what you should consider doing?
Tumblr media
STEP 2. - TALK TO LENDERS
Let's talk about the "When" of contacting a lender. The only true answer to "When" is... When You Are Ready and only you know how Ready you feel.
I've had clients express the sheer dread they felt about reaching out to a lender and it's an understandable fear. One of my people even said that they felt applying to lenders and having them see their credit condition was akin to stripping naked in front of a total stranger.
But, and as I told my client... think of it like going to the doctor for a full physical exam. Hospital gown over your birthday suit and all. Lenders are professionals there to do a job. They do NOT judge or speculate just because they have intimate knowledge of or about you.
If you suspect you may have some homework to do, credit wise, then it's better to contact a lender sooner rather than later. This allows you to get a game plan together and knock out credit related targets while you are saving funds for your down payment goal. Once completed, you are able to resume your application with confidence moving forward.
"Everything You Want Is On The Other Side of Fear" - Jack Canefield
However, if you are one of the few who feel their credit profile will be a "non-issue" then my suggestion becomes waiting to speak to lenders until you have most, if not all, of your down payment goal met.
When applying to a lender always ask if they perform a Soft or Hard inquiry against your credit report. Most of the lenders I know [and I will list two of my favorites for you here in a second] will execute a Soft Credit Inquiry to determine credit worthiness. This Soft Inquiry does not impact or affect your credit score - should such be a matter of concern to you.
Tumblr media
Something else I've noticed is that people don't seem to understand shopping for lender is very much like shopping for an automobile. The overall requirements of any one particular lender (or dealership) can be totally different from a fellow lender's (or dealership's).
Just because one says "No" does not mean they will all will say "No". And even if the first lender tells you "Yes"... I would still encourage you to apply to more than one who does Soft Inquiries. Compare apples to oranges to find the best fit for your home purchasing needs by reviewing interest rates, terms of repayment, mutual rights and remedies, and so on and so forth.
Only after you have secured lender approval (which may be conditional based on various factors) and they have given you the green light to shop up to the amount of $X.00 do you move on to Step 3.
STEP 3 - FIND YOUR REALTOR
The vast majority of the population feels the path to homeownership is "finding the home and then buying it" - through a Real Estate agent. This is NOT the case.
Selecting an agent to help navigate you through the complexities of The Offer and Purchase process is the absolute LAST step to be taken.
What Happens When You Do It Backwards:
You shop for, and find, that PERFECT place and then reach out to an an agent or contact the website that is listing that property. The agent involved determines you haven't spoken with a lender and may now recommend one to get the process started.
Just to let you know... most of us agents are unable to do much of anything at this point without your having secured a lender first. There are some agents out there who are also qualified mortgage consultants but I, personally, haven't met one yet so I don't know how they work.
At this point the agent may also put you on an e-mailer list that scouts the MLS's and regularly sends you properties "matching" the ideal home that you originally asked about.
Why?
Because "that home may not still be there when you are in a position to buy". That's agent speak for... this is gonna take a bit of second and that property will most likely have sold by the time we get you lender approved.
I can't emphasize enough the fact that we agents don't "GET" you that house - the lender does that by providing the loan to pay for it. Us agents help you shop for a home and protect your best interests when buying it.
We deal with the butt-ton of technical paperwork coming/going from every which-a-way at all hours of the day, manage the contract negotiations, handle scheduling and execution of services by professional providers involved in the transaction, are your personal defacto counselor/moral support during the stress mess of buying, and more. None of which can be done until a lender gives us the green light to begin.
Well, most folks aren't mentally or emotionally prepared to reach out to said lender on the fly like this. Fears of "what that lender will see" or personal misgivings about "not qualifying" due to credit condition can halt the whole process at this point. Perhaps leaving you with negative emotions about the whole experience thus far.
But, for the sake of argument let's say you muster up the courage to reach out to a lender anyway. You'll discover that they are people too - most with a generous heart and helpful personality.
You might even discover that your credit was nowhere near as bad as you had built it up in your mind to be. Or, the lender may come back with a little homework for you. Take care of This and That and we'll be able to get you into a home.
The "whammy" of doing it in reverse order like this is that the lender will also share that you will need X thousands of dollars as a down payment to make that happen. Talk about a case of sticker shock!
Tumblr media
Obviously, this can be discouraging and disheartening. To overcome one obstacle only run smack dab into another you weren't prepared to tackle? It may start to feel like you are looking up the side of a mountain, the goal of owning a home clearly in your line of sight, but you lack the climbing equipment (not to mention the funds to acquire such) to reach the summit.
It may feel like "that's it, game over" at this point. I know because I, too, approached home ownership azz-backwards like this before I became a Realtor. Felt like someone had ripped a bit of my soul away and left me frustrated and crying inside my heart and mind.
DON'T give up on yourself or your dream of home ownership. Back up, regroup, and attack that goal again. This time, in the correct sequence of events.
"You May Have To Fight A Battle More Than Once To Win It" - Margaret Thatcher
Do this and I promise you that there will be no better feeling in the world than those you experience at the closing table when you are finally handed the keys to your very own home.

EXSOMNIS
CHAPTER 4 - Two birds, no stone
Exsomnis: Wakeful, vigilant
Summary: Fresh Doctor out of residency you didn’t expect Conyers to be this uneventful until everything happened at the same time. From the outset, an odd meeting with what seems like a steadfast Detective but it was only the beginning.
Notes: English is not my native language, I’m trying to get better at it, please be indulgent.
Based on the movie Prisoners by Denis Villeneuve (so I don’t own any of the OG characters) if you haven’t seen it, I recommend you do (maybe before reading) :) The story takes place before and through the event in the movie.
Tumblr media
Thanksgiving was around the corner, meaning you were short on staff at the hospital leaving you no time to spend at home. Erin and Rachel were at Rach’s parents, they had tried to convince you to come but family dinners were not your thing, even more with a family you practically don’t know.
2 days before Thanksgiving you crossed paths with Detective Loki. Since last time you didn't really have time to meet, so you took a few minutes around a coffee to catch up. He noted that you were alone on Thanksgiving’s night so managed to invite you for dinner.
“Dr Y/L/N, I’m sorry but we need you to stay on shift tonight, we’re shorthanded.” The HR announced as you were taking your break. You cursed under your breath, the HR gave you an apologetic smile. Phone in hand, waiting for Loki to pick-up you hoped he was busy too, it would make it easier.
“Hey,” he answered, you heard rustling papers, he was surely at work, you huffed alleviate.
“Hi, uhm, I’m sorry I won’t be able to make it tonight. Got to stay at the hospital. Understaffed.” You announced at once, ripping off the bandage as fast as possible. He could understand, it’s kind of the same at the station. He inhaled on the other side of the phone.
“Duty is duty, don’t worry.”
“Come out next year, and we'll do it all over again ok?” you heard him chuckle
“Let’s do that but not next year.” He offered hopefull.
“Agreed, see you soon then.” You bid goodbyes wishing each other a happy Thanksgiving.
Little did you know after your call he asked to stay on shit for the night.
A few hours later, you were finally free from the Hospital but you frowned as soon as you put a foot outside. By the time you reached your car you were soaked, the heavy rain whipped your windshield, making driving difficult indeed it took you twice the time to head home. It was 2 am on your kitchen clock, you wondered if Loki was still up, you texted him not expecting an immediate answer so went to bed immediately.
You woke up around 9am, dragging your overly tired self to the coffee machine, checking your phone while the hot liquid filled the big cup. Rach and Erin had ranted about how Thanksgiving at Rach’s parents went horribly awkward. Erin had even sent a ‘rescue me’ video from Rach’s parents’ toilet in the group chat, you couldn’t help yourself to smile and blessed yourself for not going.
No answer from Loki, you felt this inescapable pang in your stomach when you find yourself led, in the blink of an eye, to question your own emotional life.
Then your phone buzzed.
“Busy, talk to you soon, sorry. Loki” you stayed silent reading the text multiple times, somehow relieved that he had answered but not quite sure of how to render the text. Trying to find something to say, you finally decided for an “Ok sure.”
You drink your coffee lost in your thoughts, heading to the living room. The news on TV blurting the Thanksgiving usual hazards: Snowy roads; traffic jams; accidents; lost items in turkeys...
“Yesterday in the usually quiet town of Conyers, Thanksgiving turned into a horrid day for two families. Two little girls disappeared in broad daylight. Soon one suspect was in custody, he was apparently driving an RV that was parked in the girls’ neighbourhood early in the day. He tried to run away with his vehicle when found at a gas station parking late last night. The two girls are still missing as we speak.”
“Damn it.” you shook your head sighing, what is wrong with people you thought while listening to the news and at the same time checking your sns.
“Detective Loki from the Conyers Department of Police has been appointed to the case.”
Raising your head from your phone, mouth agape at the TV, you rewind all the pieces of information in your mind. If you had known sooner you would have said something else in the text. Long minutes passed, during which you wondered if you should send him another message. The blinking cursor in the box "new message" seemed to became impatient until the buzz of a call made you jump.
“Y/N, have you heard about ...!? A honk made you put the phone away from your ears. Only two words “Loki”, “abduction” were audible.
“Hello to you too, yes I’ve just heard, that’s awful!”
“Yeah, hi, definitely not good timing for you though!”
“Erin!” you scolded and heard Rachel do the same.
“Okay okay, just trying to lighten the mood.” she apologized.
“Where are you by the way?” you turned the TV off.
“Traffic jams.” She sighed, another honk resonated in the phone, you heard Rachel swear at another driver.
“Tell me when you’re home. And ... we should stop the night’s run for now just in case.”
“I wish we had to stop for another reason.”
“Yeah, call me okay.”
“Yeah bye.”
Instead of the usual run, you met with the girls for board games, usually, it involved a bottle of wine and Rachel’s exquisite cuisine.
“Okay, hear me out” she put her glass on the ground, you rolled your eyes. All night she had asked about Loki.
“What about your needs Y/N? I feel like you're waiting for him to finally give you some time of his, as you're not a priority.”
“I'm not a priority right now Erin.” You sipped on your wine.
“You know what I mean. I am just afraid that you're making his needs overpass yours without taking care of how you feel in all of that.” Her hands making big gestures, you grabbed them.
“We’re not even a couple or something, calm down! you smiled, I'm not blinded by the guy, I know what I worth, what I deserve. And my needs, for now, are fine thank you.” You stifled a laugh at her frowning face.
“I shouldn’t have pushed for something to happen between you two.” she said questioning her cupid skills
“Ok, you released her hands and continued, look at me back in Cleveland, the exams took over me, the internship at the hospital was a disaster and how many times did you present me a guy?”
“Lots of times…” she mumbled
“Yeah, and you want to know why it never worked out?”
“They were assholes.” She grimaced
“Hm mostly yeah, but I wasn't ready to be in a relationship! My mind was elsewhere, I had no time to take care of my physical and mental health as much as I should have. It was a hard time, you witnessed it.”
She nodded admitted it.
“I’m fine now but I can't crash into his life like that and take his focus out of this case especially because I know it won’t work out since he is concentrating on his duty.”
“I got it okay, but there will always be another case and did he text you or something …”
“I know but I like to think we'll have a moment of respite. And he’s not quite the texter but that’s fine by me, you know I’m not a good morning and good night's texts kind of person.”
She stared at you squinting her eyes, you mimicked her wondering.
“You really want the guy!” she caught you so off guard that you almost spit your wine.
“Miss the point by miles, you cough, but yeah let's say that.” You both cracked into laughter. She was still a bit concerned, but she got around in the end.
40hours after the abduction, no sign of Loki except on the news, thankfully you had lots of work at the hospital so you didn't have time to let your mind wander.
When you heard the indictment of the paedophile priest, you almost threw a tantrum in the break room.
“How the fuck that asshole is still in charge of a church, he is surrounded by children all the fucking day!” you screamed at the tv, scaring the surgeon next to you, some students looked at you from the lunch table. The ringtone coming from your pocket made you walk out and step outside on the emergency staircase allowing you to take some fresh air.
“Hi there..,”
“Hey, I'm sorry I didn't call sooner”
“No no, it's okay I've seen the news. I know you have a lot to do ... and the freaking priest ... I mean why is that guy still out there.”
“I don't know Y/N, I'm not a judge.” He answered with a tight voice.
“Right sorry, I jumped on you, it's just that..it's really upsetting.” you sighed rubbing your eyes.
A 2-seconds silence felt, giving you both opportunity to breathe in and change the subject.
“Are you all right?” You asked
“Tired mostly, he inhaled, I wish .. I could see you without feeling guilty .. but my mind is on the case..”
“Hey hey, you shushed gently, it's okay, they are the priority here.”
“Why didn't we met at another time.” He said gravely.
“At least we've met, even though you had to be stabbed for it to happen.” He chuckled over the phone. “I have to go back, be careful out there.”
“You got my word.”
He hung up, you took a big breath of fresh air before stepping back in the building, thinking of what he said. What would have happened if you had met at another time?
Erin bumped into you.
“The community is organizing a vigil in front of the Birch’s house tomorrow night, she handed you a flyer, you’re coming?”
“Yeah, I’ll drop by your place so we can go together.” she nodded and you sighed looking at the face of the two little girls on the handout.

Seriously, what circular-time and being-of-rain said! I hope my OP didn't sound like complaining; I tried to make that clear with my last paragraph. They've got to make ends meet, too. If they can't, then we lose the opportunity to hear more great stories. Pirating from small companies like Big Finish is cutting off your nose to spite your face.
I've been poor. Really, really poor. Poor enough that for years after I learned about Big Finish, I never listened to any because I couldn't afford it (a lot poorer than that, actually, but that's beside the point here). I sure wish someone had told me back then about the hundreds of hours of Doctor Who they've made available, freely and legally, on Spotify--and remember that you only need a paid Spotify subscription if you want to listen on mobile; web streaming from a desktop can be done from a free account. Again, legally!
Even now that I have a decent job, I often wait for Big Finish sales, because there's just so much cool stuff in their back-catalog that I could probably never afford it all. So, again, I wait for sales and buy it properly.
Yeah, I had to wait forever for enough sales and enough dough to get all of Gallifrey. So what? The Doctor spent 4.5 billion years punching a wall with his bare fist to get all of Gallifrey. I think I got the better bargain.
Folks outside the UK have basically been getting Big Finish on sale this whole time. And yeah, I bought what I could afford this weekend because I'm not about to pass up a bargain if I can help it. But I'll still buy Big Finish once they eventually do change the pricing mechanism (which I don't doubt they'll need to sooner or later).
I don't think the 1:1 pricing was unfair. I don't think prices based on the exchange rate would be unfair either. They're not trying to gouge anybody. They're trying to stay in business and make cool stuff and make it as widely available as they can manage.
I'll keep buying Big Finish, letting folks know about Big Finish sales, writing reviews, and telling anyone and everyone I meet who expresses even the tiniest bit of interest in the DWEU about the audios. That's my way of giving back to both the fandom and the good people at Big Finish (most of whom are genuinely part of the fandom).
And if you're one of the people who has pirated Big Finish, I'm not gonna cast stones at you, but please stop. I know it's hard to feel left out, and I know you need to eat. But so do they.
If you've already listened to all the free stuff on Spotify (seriously there's so much of it), then consider exploring alternatives to piracy if you have time and energy (and I know some of us have neither). In larger urban centers, it might be possible to persuade your public library to begin stocking Big Finish audios. BBC radio have broadcast some Big Finish series in the UK; I wonder if it would be possible to get public radio broadcasters in other countries to do the same. That way you get to listen for free (or as close to it as makes no difference), Big Finish gets paid, and hopefully it draws in some new customers. The more people buy Big Finish, the easier it will be for them to offer bargains and keep making cool stuff.
Anyway. I'm glad folks have more time to figure out what they want to buy at the lower price while they still can. I hope we'll all do so with gratitude rather than resentment.
Big Finish Fans outside the UK
If you have some money to spare and you know for sure you’re going to buy some upcoming releases, you might want to go pre-order them before April 1st, 2019. Big Finish is changing their pricing policy to use exchange rates rather than the current 1:1 pricing. In the US, this currently means that you will save about 30 cents per dollar. So, for example, a $20 box set will cost you roughly $26 after the end of this month. (Though with the Brexit fiasco, who knows whether the pound will remain strong vs. the dollar.)
I totally understand why Big Finish is making this move, but it sure was handy for me to know exactly what price I’d pay before adding stuff to my cart. Hopefully their upcoming website redesign will take care of that for me as well.
