I am not a medievalist. I have no plans to become a medievalist. But I will say, so far every portrayal of Gawain that I’ve seen in media is completely valid and they all pass my own personal vibe check. Merlin’s version is just pure ADHD and eat the rich vibes. There’s an absolutely bonkers novel called By Force Alone (basically Arthuriana by way of Tarantino & Scorsese) which depicts Gawain as a traveler in an eldritch land (Faerie), sorta like the scientists from Annihilation. Gwaine DOES care about Merlin in a better ways than Arthur and you’re right to say it! The first time I watched Merlin I thought all the teasing was fun and cute, but then I watched it again and the way that Arthur treats Merlin is ACTUALLY mean sometimes. But Gwaine is a saint, love of my life

yEAH! I honestly wish that Arthur had more character development when it comes to how he treats Merlin. even just a subtle amount more than Arthur being nice only when he is vulnerable or Merlin is about to DIE.

Gwaine has a massively different background than Arthur, but he is still a legitimate noble that treats Merlin with respect, even after he is knighted. After Lancelot died Gwaine became the last remaining knight to have had a personal relationship with Merlin before being knighted AND IT SHOWS!!!

merlin’s secret being a visual thing. when he is around arthur or gwen or leon or morgana or [insert whatever character here] merlin seems pale and thin, almost like a ghost or an apparition. when the sun lands on him he reflects it like a corpse, he eyes seem dark and dull. he has this ethereal beauty to him, this otherworldly visage that leads many to believe he is of fae blood. he just doesn’t seem to be 100% human. but when he is ONLY with lancelot or gaius (cough or gwaine bc gwaine DEFINITELY knew) merlin is heartachingly human. merlin shines in the sunlight, colors are brighter and more vibrant around him, and his smiles are wide and his laughs are boisterous. he takes on color and leaves everyone wanting to know him. but when other join in or interact with the two, merlin shifts before their eyes so quickly and suddenly that they aren’t sure whether or not what they saw was a trick of the light. the idea still leaves them wanting more and wanting to see the merlin who is just so full of life but that merlin only appears for a small select group of people. merlin who has a guard so high that it has an effect of other’s perception of him.

started rewatching merlin and well. see. i haven't seen it in a while but oh god. og my god. i totallt get why i loved it so much while watching it. i have not been this happy for months. merlin makes me happy. (and sad. so sad. his childhood bestfriend dies. his father dies. morgana becomes evil. GWAINE DIES ???????? lancelot dies. arthur dies. the disir episode ruins everything.) but also. colin morgan smiles and he laughs and he is goofy. and gwaine is effortless and charming. and lancelot is a ray of sunshine. and gaius makes merlin his favourite food. and people are affectionately called cabbageheads when they're actually dollopheads. and you occasionally get blessed with a saucy old man who is somehow as much of a scene stealer as his younger self. there's a scene with a wondrous blue butterfly in a cave. somehow, for 45 minutes, time stops, and everything feels alright.
