Maybe it's a 'study finds water is wet' type of thought, but
considering it's an action movie whose overall plot is "immortal warriors Fuck Shit Up™️", I think it's significant that in The Old Guard the thing that makes Copley pull red strings through his Murder Conspiracy Board and say "[Merrick] doesn't care what [Andy]'s done with [her immortality]" is the people they save, not the ones they kill
Most of the Conspiracy Board is him circling random newspaper headlines and faces on old photographs to (more or less realistically) follow the immortals' treck through the world and big historical events. Which is, in-canon, not much different than putting portraits from different centuries next to a picture of Keanu Reeves and saying "they look the same, clearly Reeves is an immortal!"
But then there are the connections. A little girl holding Joe's hand in WW1 becoming the youngest (and first) woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize for Medicine (suck it, Kozak). Or the grandchild of a family that Andy saved from [something] helping people escape from the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia.
They are warriors. They have fought and been in the midst of countless wars, major or minor, throughout history. They must have killed as many people as they saved... and yet.
It's not them taking out a random warlord or dictator or rabidly hateful politician that has tangible repercussions in history. It's the children and families they get out of war zones, save from accidents, protect from natural disasters. People to whom they give a second chance at life, and grow to change the world (or even just their own world), like a mysterious stranger once changed theirs just by holding out a hand or patching a wound.
I don't know I just think it's particularly neat
#my ponderings#the old guard#I know we all love to play the 'if you could go back in time and kill One Person who would it be' game#but I think a movie that makes it EXTREMELY SATISFYING to see the Bad Guys die -#- having 'actually the best and greatest changes happen when people help each other' as its underlying message...#it means something#I also think it connects to Andy feeling like nothing she does changes anything at the start of the movie#for 80% of her life you could Solve A Problem by Taking Out The Guy Causing The Problem#especially in battle! you kill the general and you win. if you win the Problem Is Solved#but then everything becomes More Complex. the Problems™️ are globalized and/or systemic.#and Winning a Battle means just killing people. it doesn't Stop The Problem (nor really end a war)#so it feels useless#and even when they save people... they can’t stay in people's lives for long because immortality#which means they can never know what happens to the people they save#they don't (and can't) have the full picture

Pfft, I don’t have time to find the og post without reblogs on it but I remember @thefantastician assigning sonic fans the homework of playing sonic adventure 2 by December 20th which happens to be next week as I’m posting and I am proud to say as of Wednesday night, I was finally able to get through crazy gadget and left off on Final Rush for hero story and Final Chase for dark story. (I also played through gamma’s story in Sonic adventure last night cuz that was the only story I had left in that game to unlock super sonic but left off at the boss fight against beta cuz he’s a bastard)
Kinda can’t wait to finish the game cuz I wanna get the randomizer mod and the mods where everybody is dressed as either Amy or Rouge

The patents Nintendo is going after pocket pair for are insane 🫣 and bad, bad news for future monster catching games if Nintendo is successful is suing them. The basics are one is for the overworld catching mechanic, one is for the overworld fight after a failed catch, and one is for riding a creature in the overworld. I really hope this lawsuit is thrown out the window because otherwise I feel like it'll turn into pokemon or bust in the genre.
#I've played other monster catching games and they've all been designed to catch the creature in a separate screen#Which Nintendo has never had an issue with but now that this is a fairly new mechanic for them#It seems they want to monopolize it which man. I dont like.#Im not saying pocketpair is perfect but I hope people understand what we stand to LOSE if this lawsuit is given to nintendo#You can hate on pocket pairs designs and whatnot but if nintendo wins this lawsuit#No company will be able to come behind them and do better in an overworld setting#There will be no chance for improvement in the genre. it’s been an embarrassingly long time but I think I’m gonna pick up my first watch of Merlin again soon cause I got halfway through Season 2 before shit got busy irl.
but now I’m also desperately trying to remember the details of the AU plot I was telling to Emi that included, like, Arthur discovering Merlin’s magic at the end of either season 1 or season 2 (I can’t remember 💔), but Merlin doesn’t know he knows, and then he spends the whole next season agonising over whether he’d tell Uther or not/confront Merlin or not.

genuinely i hate summer so much. i have so many things i could be doing. things i need to do. things i want to do. things i would probably enjoy doing if i just did them. and yet. i have been doing nothing. all day. because it's hot and therefore i cannot function, like, at all

i can't stop thinking about the "game" motif in the Death Note musical i need to write an essay about it i swear

'the game begins' 'playing his game' 'stalemate' (<- game terminology counts i have decided)#and then in 'secrets and lies' Light says 'i'm smart enough so it appears to win this stupid game'#and in 'the way it ends' he goes 'i've won the game but never gave up half my years'#they BOTH only think of the whole Kira thing as a massive game. that's all it is to them#just a chance to outsmart each other#Light has his grand ambitions but the moment L enters the scene all he cares abt is beating L#L doesn't really care about saving people from Kira. we see firsthand he's more than willing to sacrifice people's lives–#–to get an edge over Kira/Light#Ryuk also uses the game motif in 'kira' with the line 'don't know he's Light Yagami playing his dangerous game'#but it makes sense for him to view it as a game! he's a shinigami! the lives of mortals are just a source of entertainment for him!#but y'know what really gets me?#iirc L Light and Ryuk are the ONLY ones that lean into this motif#the closest i remember anyone else getting was Misa + Rem saying 'love makes you break all the rules' in 'mortals and fools'#so they refer to the rules of the 'game'#BUT ONLY IN THE CONTEXT OF BREAKING THEM#L and Light are playing this massive game but for everyone else it's extremely real#real people are dying. and the two smartest characters in the show don't care#even Rem doesn't consider it a game!
