i am sad :(
been trying to do more kickboxing stuff bc it just like makes me feel so fucking JAZZED i love it
and also i've been wanting to be more active, but back to back to back flareups has made it really hard
and so i started initially and i was VERY SORE! AND I WAS LIKE YEAHHHHH!!! LOVE TO BE SORE!!!!!
and then i was like I GOTTA KEEP WORKING OUT TO STAY SORE!!!
but it made me less sore :(
now idk if i even feel sore at all today :(
my arms should hurt to move around, my back should hate trying to keep me upright. but alas. :(
guess that means i have to work out even harder >:)
#i'm a little bit wackadoo bc i love muscle soreness and exercising DOES get me a little high#but i maintain that distance and marathon runners are truly fucking like. something is Wrong.#and i think it's bc long distance/marathon/endurance runners are tapping into our lizard brain#like no other group of ppl on earth do#we were endurance hunters not speed hunters right?#same when we were prey we just had to outmaneuver them and then we could out last them#and i genuinely think they tap into that unlike any other group of ppl#which makes them a little fucking......Wrong. lol#everyone else has rules and standards and goals and things that are obtainable and clearly End#but they? nah man. it just keeps going and going. lol#ANYWAY

i woke up in a cold sweat with this cursed AU for MCSM. this is my contribution as a paleontology nerd, i’m so sorry in advance
stupid AU where everything is the same, but everyone is a raptor of some kind. i am such a nerd that i legitimately put thought into what type of dinosaur each character would be and why, and i’ll give explanations for each one. this was stupid and really rushed, but it was so much fun to do, and i hope you all enjoy???
—————————————-
let’s start with Jesse, who was the second easiest choice behind Axel; they are a speculative smaller subspecies of Deinonychus antirrhopus.
Deinonychus was one of the most important discoveries in paleontology, and would give rise to what is known as “the Dinosaur Renaissance”, which sparked how we see dinosaurs today. this was because of it’s clear appearance as an agile, active predator (which is not how dinosaurs were seen at the time of its discovery), and later, it’s striking resemblance to the feathered, gliding dinosaur Archaeopteryx. Deinonychus even modeled how the “Velociraptors” looked in Jurassic Park! however, the issue lies in the fact that Deinonychus was a medium-sized raptor, and Jesse… well, they’re not very tall. i really wanted to use Deinonychus, but the size wasn’t right, so i settled for a speculative, smaller subspecies. Deinonychus is also speculated to be a pack hunter, which would definitely work in Jesse’s favor. also i think it’s funny; Deinonychus antirrhopus means “counterbalanced terrible claw”, and i find that to be the most ironic thing for Jesse, given how clumsy they are. i love it.
———————————————
next, Axel! he was the EASIEST choice by far; he is a Utahraptor ostrommaysorum.
you probably already know Utahraptor; it’s the largest and most heavily built of all raptors, often growing just over 6 ft tall at the hips. Axel is also very tall and heavily built, so that immediately clicks. but adding on to this, in contrast with other raptors, Utahraptor was likely more of an ambushing raptor rather than a pursuit raptor, and that clicks with Axel hating running and relying on more aggressive and explosive tactics, so to speak. and finally, the most funny detail; if you’ll notice, the Utahraptor’s lower jaw juts out slightly and curves away from the upper jaw. this was probably to gain a better grip on prey, but it does give them a very strange look even when their mouth is closed. it makes that comment that Lukas made about Axel being a mouth breather even funnier, at least to me.
————————————-
Olivia! i had a little bit of trouble with her, but i think i settled on a good one; she is a Dromaeosaurus albertensis.
Dromaeosaurus was a shier, smaller raptor that lived up north in what is now Canada, enduring freezing polar winters and months of total darkness. it’d take a lot of brains to be able to pull strings to survive that, which Olivia certainly provides. Dromaeosaurus also relied more on the chase and brain power, rather than brute force, though they would’ve if needed be. recent studies also show that raptors probably had very similar capabilities to modern birds, so if they had a brain kind of like corvids, they could’ve even used primitive tools at times. comes in handy with redstone, eh? Dromaeosaurus was also a good tracker, thanks to its sensitive nose and sharp eyes. also, they’re very important but often overlooked. Dromaeosaurus was the leading dinosaur for the names of all under the “raptor” umbrella; the dromaeosaurids.
————————————
Petra! she’s my favorite character, i’ll just admit that lmao. but i gave her the same treatment as everyone else here, so; she is an Austroraptor cabazai.
Austroraptor was a tall, lean, and quick raptor which inhabited the warm swamps of South America. obviously, Petra is the second tallest in The New Order, and Austroraptor was the second tallest raptor on record, so that checks out. but i think the build of Austroraptor checks out too; it’s moderately built, both for speed and strength, with the classic claw. it was very slender and judging from their leg bones, could be a very good pursuit raptor that could also maintain speeds for extended periods of time, which matches Petra’s love to race and run. what sets Austroraptor apart, however, is it’s diet; it was speculated to be at least partially piscivorous, meaning it ate a lot of fish. it’s teeth were slightly conical and acted almost like hooks, which would be quite painful to an opponent. Austroraptor was pretty good at it’s niche, but it wasn’t afraid to go elsewhere if needed. And Petra loves to go elsewhere.
—————————-
Lukas! he was a little tricky for me to figure out, i’m not gonna lie. i was stuck between these two: Velociraptor mongoliensis and Saurornitholestes langstoni. but i had to choose only one, and i ultimately had to go with a speculative larger subspecies of Velociraptor, since i already broke the size rule with Jesse.
Velociraptor is the most widely known, famous, and beloved raptor of all time, and obviously a fan favorite, so that already checks a box. but adding to this, Velociraptor is a very well-documented dinosaur with some incredible specimens. Velociraptors were also likely to be stealthy and tenacious hunters who used their brains, speed, and ability to take a tumble (which Lukas does a LOT) to their advantage. Lukas is also confirmed in game to be attractive (which is still so funny to me), so i added all kinds of cool looking display feathers in a blue color, because 1) his text and eyes are a blueish color and 2) blue is a kinda rare color in nature, and a lot of birds today seem to like the it. also, in episode 7, remember how his nose wasn’t right in the portrait? i kind of like to imagine that Cassie heard that he was a Velociraptor and assumed he was the Jurassic Park version? so Lukas just comes in, sees the portrait, and is like “where tf are my feathers”
——————-
last but not least; Rueben! i had some trouble picking out a genus and species, but i knew immediately that he had to be a small ceratopsian. i chose for him, Microceratus gobiensis.
Microceratus is an adorable looking ceratopsian that was only about the size of a very small dog. but don’t let it’s appearance fool you. ceratopsians have some of the biggest characters and presences in paleontology, with the audacity to match. Rueben definitely has character, personality, and audaciousness. don’t get me wrong, they would probably rather not fight (at least some of them. can’t say the same for Triceratops), but they sure would’ve if they had to. Microceratus doesn’t have a ton of defenses, but it did have a sharp, crushing beak, and could dodge and run very quickly if it had to. it’s front legs were a bit shorter than it’s hind legs, which allowed it to run bipedally. i also just generally think of ceratopsians like the wild boars and rhinos of the dinosaur world, so i guess that just fits, considers Rueben’s main attack is headbutting (which makes me think i could’ve made him a pachycephalosaur too). i just love the idea of this tiny prey creature sticking with a bunch of predators who constantly protect him.
that’s all for now!! thank you for reading and allowing me to infodump about my special interest combined with a hyperfixation lol. i might do more stupid sketches based on this idea in the future if people like it

hi!! I just wanted to say that I was the anon who requested huntlow with Willow's parents and im– thank you so much, that was so sweet ;; I love your fics so much! I hope you have a wonderful day, thank you for sharing your awesome writings with people <3 :]
Note: this has been sitting in my drafts since October. I have very bad habit of drafting a response and forgetting about it but I did have an alternate version for the “meet the parents” prompt in mind. Original for reference No FTF spoilers just a headcanon I’ve head for awhile. 💚💛 also thank you so much that is so sweet
---
“... and it turns out fireflies don’t actually catch fire in the human realm which is so weird! Like why even call them that?” Willow continued, taking a deep breath as she tried to fit months worth of stories into mere minutes. She knew they would have plenty of time to catch up and she had her photo album to show them but she had just missed her dads so much and had so much time to make up for. “And then, oh wait I should probably let Gus tell you about cars he explains them so much better than I could and we-.”
“Oh petal we’re just so glad you were safe,” said Gilbert as he and Harvey wrapped her into another hug, they had months worth of hugs to catch up on too.
“I mean, I knew you were,” said Harvey, his eyes still stung with tears left over from their reunion. “My daughter is sweet and tough, like a cactus blossom.”
“Oh, you dorks,” Willow sighed fondly, allowing herself to be buried again by their embrace. “I missed you too.”
“We really must meet this Ms. Camila to thank her for taking such good care of you all this time,” said Harvey, giving his family an extra squeeze.
“Yes,” agreed Gilbert, wiping a lingering tear from his daughter’s eyes, still in disbelief that she was truly there with them. “We owe her so much for bringing you back to us. We should have her over for dinner.”
“Oh my Titan yes of course!” said Willow, looking around for the others. The group had separated to focus on different tasks and after Hooty had confirmed everything was done and everyone was safe, she ran off to find the cell where her dads were being kept. ”There’s someone else I really want you to meet too, I just don’t know where-.”
“Willow?” came a voice from seemingly nowhere and everywhere at the same time.
“Hunter?” she responded instantly, looking around to search for him. It felt like lifetimes since she had heard his voice, yet it had only been a day. A chaotic, hard, dramatic day. She turned and spotted him at the end of the row by the entrance of the prison and took off running. “Hunter!”
“Willow?” He turned and saw her running full speed towards him. He took off as well, his heart racing. “Willow!”
The dreamy and desperate way he said her name prompted her to summon a vine to ride on to reach him sooner. She hadn’t wanted to separate, but there was too much ground to cover in such little time they had no choice. Before they had parted, Hunter had wrapped her in a tight hug and Willow wanted nothing more than to return to that moment and now have that same warmth and closeness surrounded with safety and certainty.
He had also whispered something to her right before he left that she wanted him to repeat in a calmer setting to ensure she hadn’t misheard.
In his eagerness to reach her, with the same sentiment in mind, Hunter unintentionally teleported to the spot she had been when he first saw her. She turned and saw him standing there in confusion but she simply just changed directions and ran towards him again. Hunter was so overcome by the sight of her, safe and sound after the terrifying and dangerous day they had endured that the moment he took a step forward, he found himself teleporting again, essentially switching places with her.
Willow couldn’t help but laugh as she realized it had happened again. She ended up back by her dads who watched on in confusion, slowly piecing together what was happening and exchanging a knowing smile between themselves.
“Stay there, I’ll come to you!” They both called at the same time. They both laughed, so overtired and so desperate to be near each other.
“Should I send a vine over?” she called, overwhelmed with anticipation.
“No, no I can figure it out!” Hunter called back, still adjusting with controlling the lingering magic linked to his emotions. “Hold on!”
“Is that him?” asked Gilbert with a smile, knowing from Willow’s overjoyed expression that it could be nobody else. She subconsciously adjusted her hair as she gave them an excited nod to confirm. Despite only having a few minutes to reconnect and try to explain everything, Hunter’s name managed to come up many times. And the bubbly, airy way that she said it with was not lost on her fathers.
They had so missed the way she would roll her eyes when they would playfully ask who she was messaging, the giddy way she would lean against the wall and gaze at her scroll and claim it was no one. They were relieved to know that in the time they were away she had been with someone who made her so happy.
And they were delighted for the opportunity to pester the both of them together.
“Yeah, that’s-.” Before Willow could finish, she was cut off by Hunter teleporting directly in front of her and lunging forward to capture her lips in a purposeful and fervent kiss. His hands delicately cupped the sides of her face, rough and calloused but unmistakably gentle as his fingers brushed the side of her cheek. Willow instantly closed her eyes feeling like she was the one being transported this time as she rested her hands on his chest. It took very little prompting for her to return the kiss and she tilted her head to the side to bring him closer.
When he pulled away, it was only because he wanted to look at her. He was breathing heavily and Willow couldn't tell if it was from all the back and forth or because he had forgotten to breathe while he was kissing her. A part of her wanted it to be because she was just that breathtaking. She felt as thought she might float away if Hunter removed his hands from her.
“-Hunter.” murmured Willow faintly as the rest of the sentence caught up with her. The word left her lips with a new definition and she genuinely wondered how she had ever existed anywhere except this moment. He was surrounded by the glow of a pale pink light, sparkles and shine that far surpassed anything the Collector could summon.
She could tell by the wide adoring look in his eyes that this glow reached her too.
“Willow,” he responded softly, thinking she was saying his name looking for an explanation for his impulsiveness. He spoke quickly, refusing to waste any more precious time. “Willow I- I’m just so glad you’re safe. I just don’t know what I’d do if you were… but I knew you’d be fine, I knew you could handle it but I still… I just-.” He leaned forward and kissed her again, obviously feeling that words were not enough. As much as Willow enjoyed hearing him voice his feelings, she had to admit she wholeheartedly agreed. She smiled against his chapped lips that sparked with warmth as though static electricity was surging through her and sought to flood her chest with lightning.
When he released her this time, he pulled her into him a tight hug, moving one of his hands around the small of her back as the other cradled the back of her head as he buried his face in her hair. Willow exhaled as she eagerly returned the gesture and put her arms around his torso and felt the galderstone in his chest beating furiously, which she knew only occurred when he felt a strong emotion. She didn’t realize how worried she truly had been until she wasn’t anymore.
“Hunter...” she started, stepping back to look at him, placing her hands on his face to wipe away his own tears. She was surprised he had any tears left but she was relieved they were present under happier circumstances. She realized how easy it would be for her to pull him forward and kiss him again, and how much she wanted to. She could tell that that what he was hoping for as she tried to remember what she had begun telling him. She knew there would be plenty of future opportunities now that there was no rush or pressure or end of the world making the decision about whether or not it was the right time. It was hard to imagine that the right time wasn’t all the time .
But the secluded romantic bubble that Hunter had brought to surround them was actually fairly transparent as Willow remembered with flushed cheeks that they had an audience. “Hunter… “ she started again, and he brought his face out to see her, thinking she was giving him permission to kiss her again. He slowly leaned down, but right before he met her lips a third time she finally mustered the strength to finish her sentence. “...these are my dads.” She said slowly, gesturing to this side with her head.
She felt Hunter tense up, mostly in confusion, as his eyes followed her nod and he turned his head slowly to find two older men looking at them with matching smirks, offering him a small wave. He recognized them from WIllow’s drawing in the human realm. He prayed that it was somehow possible that they hadn’t been standing there the entire time. The nervous chuckle Willow emitted confirmed his prayers would be in vain.
He felt the romance bubble pop.
“Hello sirs!” Hunter said, suddenly a combination of pure nerves and formality as he removed his hands from Willow in order to extend his hand to her fathers, not sure whose to shake first. “It’s a pleasure to meet you!”
“From the looks of it, I’d say the pleasure’s all yours,” said Gilbert and both he and his husband chuckled lightly at some inside joke Hunter did not understand but knew he was involved in.
“Ha ha ha, yes of course,” Hunter said, laughing nervously, not sure what else he was meant to do. In all the times he had imagined this meeting, this had never crossed his mind. He was meant to be dressed up and prepared, his arrival planned and with flowers, not returning from battle in a torn Halloween costume with his hair unkempt and caught in the middle of-
“So, our Willow has told us so much about you,” Gilbert said, in a friendly chipper tone. “Clearly, she hasn’t told us everything.”
Hunter glanced quickly at Willow, flustered all over again at the idea that he had come up, as her delicate smile confirmed the claim. As reassuring as her smile always was, Hunter still wondered what he had to live up to and if his impulsiveness had contradicted or confirmed anything. He was sure Willow had been fine with it (actually he was more than sure that she had been more than fine) but he could not decipher how her fathers were feeling.
Was he in trouble? Should he apologize? Would apologizing be taken as an admission of wrongdoing? It certainly hadn’t felt wrong. He wondered now if Luz was hiding somewhere nearby laughing at his expense, having been the one to tell him to go for it the next time he saw Willow. Should he act like nothing had happened? Was he pausing too long thinking these things before audibly responding?
He had just done battle with monsters literally composed of his greatest fears and this somehow felt so much scarier.
He cleared his throat and carefully chose his next words.
“I’d just like to say-.” But before he could finish, he vanished again into a flash of gold. Willow could tell it was his nerves getting the best of him and his panic had removed him against his will. She knew he was probably embarrassed beyond belief that he had allowed himself to be teleported mid introduction, even though Willow knew it had not been done on purpose.
A faint yell of frustration from a great distance confirmed her suspicion. Willow sighed and shook her head fondly, knowing everything about this moment meant to much to him.
And he meant so much to her.
“So does that happen… a lot?” Harvey asked after a moment when Hunter did not instantly reappear.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah, kind of.” Willow replied dreamily, still catching her breath. “He’s still getting the hang of it.”
“Oh, really? Should we be be concerned?” Gilbert asked. “Does he know what he’s doing?”
“I think so,” she said, looking down the pathway again, knowing he would reappear at any moment. “It’s driven by his emotions and he’s still figuring out the best way to express them.”
“I see,” said Harvey. “I’m assuming his emotions for you must be pretty strong considering he didn’t even hesitate.”
“Um, well I dunno I guess… wait, are you talking about the kiss or the teleporting thing?”
“Well, I guess it depends,” said Gilbert sharing a knowing look with his husband. “Which one were you talking about?”
a knowing look with his husband before, lowering his glasses to give her a look of intrigue. “Which one were you talking about?”

‘Forth the Three Hunters!'
Aragorn went back to the camping-place and looked at the baggage. 'Two packs are missing.' he said, 'and one is certainly Sam's: it was rather large and heavy. This then is the answer: Frodo has gone by boat, and his servant has gone with him. Frodo must have returned while we were all away. I met Sam going up the hill and told him to follow me; but plainly he did not do so. He guessed his master s mind and came back here before Frodo had gone. He did not find it easy to leave Sam behind!'
'But why should he leave us behind, and without a word?' said Gimli. 'That was a strange deed!'
'And a brave deed,' said Aragorn. 'Sam was right, I think. Frodo did not wish to lead any friend to death with him in Mordor. But he knew that he must go himself. Something happened after he left us that overcame his fear and doubt.'
'Maybe hunting Orcs came on him and he fled,' said Legolas.
'He fled, certainly,' said Aragorn, 'but not, I think, from Orcs.' What he thought was the cause of Frodo's sudden resolve and flight Aragorn did not say. The last words of Boromir he long kept secret.
'Well, so much at least is now clear,' said Legolas: 'Frodo is no longer on this side of the River: only he can have taken the boat. And Sam is with him; only he would have taken his pack.'
'Our choice then,' said Gimli, 'is either to take the remaining boat and follow Frodo, or else to follow the Orcs on foot. There is little hope either way. We have already lost precious hours.'
'Let me think!' said Aragorn. 'And now may I make a right choice and change the evil fate of this unhappy day!' He stood silent for a moment. 'I will follow the Orcs,' he said at last. 'I would have guided Frodo to Mordor and gone with him to the end; but if I seek him now in the wilderness, I must abandon the captives to torment and death. My heart speaks clearly at last: the fate of the Bearer is in my hands no longer. The Company has played its part. Yet we that remain cannot forsake our companions while we have strength left. Come! We will go now. Leave all that can be spared behind! We will press on by day and dark!'
They drew up the last boat and carried it to the trees. They laid beneath it such of their goods as they did not need and could not carry away. Then they left Parth Galen. The afternoon was fading as they came back to the glade where Boromir had fallen. There they picked up the trail of the Orcs. It needed little skill to find.
'No other folk make such a trampling,' said Legolas. 'It seems their delight to slash and beat down growing things that are not even in their way.'
'But they go with a great speed for all that,' said Aragorn, 'and they do not tire. And later we may have to search for our path in hard bare lands.'
'Well, after them!' said Gimli. 'Dwarves too can go swiftly, and they do not tire sooner than Orcs. But it will be a long chase: they have a long start.'
'Yes,' said Aragorn, 'we shall all need the endurance of Dwarves. But come! With hope or without hope we will follow the trail of our enemies. And woe to them, if we prove the swifter! We will make such a chase as shall be accounted a marvel among the Three Kindreds µ Elves. Dwarves, and Men. Forth the Three Hunters!'
Like a deer he sprang away. Through the trees he sped. On and on he led them, tireless and swift, now that his mind was at last made up. The woods about the lake they left behind. Long slopes they climbed, dark, hard-edged against the sky already red with sunset. Dusk came. They passed away, grey shadows in a stony land.

Explanation: Kimber learns from Jesse about the darkest time for the 501st and a lost Clone she never knew.
Kimber knelt on the ground on one knee, sweat dripping from her face and down her neck, breathing heavily and gasping for air. Her body was aching something fierce; her arms and legs felt like jelly. Her training over the last three weeks had been getting harder and harder, just as Jesse had promised. He had been working her to the bone. She never realized just how hard certain Clone soldiers trained, especially ARC Troopers. She was doing a lot of weight lifting to build up her strength, training courses to increase her endurance and speed, weapons training and acrobatics training. Unfortunately, there had been a couple incidents in her training where she’d gotten injured; a broken leg as well as a broken arm, so she had to spend a couple days in a bacta tank to heal those injuries before continuing.
At the present, she had been going through some hand to hand combat with Jesse and he was giving her quite the beating. They’d been sparring for some time now and he just kept beating her over and over again.
“You’re getting better, Kimber,” Jesse commented, coming up beside her and offering her a canteen of water.
She took the canteen, downed a swig of water and then replied as she handed it back, “I’m guessing the Bad Batch boys must have been taking it easy on me because our training was never this hard.”
“Though, it was also Hunter who had been training me, so that would make a lot of sense,” she thought to herself.
“That is a possibility,” he said back. “Now, come on. Let’s go again.”
With a huff, Kimber got back up to her feet and brought her hands up to a ready position as Jesse did the same.
“Start with blocking and then come at me,” he told her.
“Yes, sir,” she said.
A second later, he lunged forward with a strike and their next match began. Kimber easily blocked Jesse’s first three strikes and then ducked when he threw a haymaker at her. While she was crouched down, she aimed a punch at his abdomen, but he reached down and grabbed her wrist. She brought her other arm down on his, breaking his hold on her wrist and then, while he was wide open, kicked him square in the chest and made him stagger backwards. While he was off balance, she pushed on his shoulder and swung herself up onto his back, wrapping her arms over his neck and her legs around his torso.
“Fighting dirty, are we?” he questioned aloud as he grasped at her arms.
“You must forget the squad I belong to,” she replied mischievously through a chuckle.
Kimber held on tight around Jesse’s neck, not allowing him to break free. However, she didn’t anticipate him swiftly moving backwards and slamming her back into a nearby pillar. The blow to her back startled her and made her cry out, her arms around him falling aside and she slid off his back to the ground, dropping to her knees. She was stunned for a second and then, before she could react, he grabbed her wrists, hoisted her back up to her feet and then, to surprise her even more, he pinned her wrists up against the wall up by her head. She let out a startled gasp at this sudden action.
Leaning in closer, Jesse declared with a devious smirk, “The Bad Batch aren’t the only ones who don’t fight fair, darlin’.”
In that moment, her breath caught in her chest as she realized that his body was pressed almost right against hers and their faces were merely inches apart as they stood there staring at each other, both of them breathing heavily from their sparring. No one had ever been this close to her except for Hunter and she was now caught off guard. She could feel her cheeks heating up and flushing. A small flutter of warmth rose up from her stomach to her chest and she could’ve sworn his eyes had flickered down to her lips for a split second before meeting her gaze again. His eyes were a lighter honey brown, almost like Echo’s, and they were watching her with a calm intensity, which she didn’t even think was possible. What was happening?
However, a short moment later, Jesse stepped back, releasing her wrists, and stated, “Well, I think that’s enough training for today.”
As her arms fell to her sides, Kimber released a quiet, heavy breath, given Jesse’s sudden proximity. Having someone so close to her that wasn’t Hunter had caused her whole being to freeze and she had been unsure how to react. It was new and foreign. She hadn’t been expecting that from him and was now flustered…and she was certain Jesse knew it from the small smirk he gave her before turning around and moving back to where he’d set his canteen of water down.
“I’m sure he’s just trying to tease me. That’s what he does,” she thought to herself.
“Do we need to get you some time in the bacta tank?” he asked her, looking over his shoulder.
She just shook her head. “No, I think I’m okay. I just need to go back to the hotel and lie down for a while.” Then she offered him a friendly smile. “Are you still coming over tonight?”
Flashing a grin of his own, he asked in return, “I haven’t missed a holoshow night yet, have I?”
With a small chuckle, she responded, “No, you have not.”
For the past couple weeks, Kimber and Jesse had been getting together twice a week to watch certain holoshows together. The first time, Jesse had walked her home after some late night training, but they both were still wide awake, so Kimber had invited him to her room to just spend time together and they ended up watching a show. They’d enjoyed their time enough that they started making it a tradition. They liked getting to know each other and just indulging in holoshows together, especially since neither of them had ever had the time before to do such things. It was a good, relaxing pastime between two friends.
“Well, I’m going to head to my hotel and get some rest in. I’ll see you tonight, Jesse,” Kimber said to him, giving him a farewell wave.
“See you then, Kimber. I’ll bring the food this time,” Jesse replied with a wave himself.
She scoffed playfully and said back, “You’d better. It’s your turn anyway.”
With a laugh and a shake of her head, Kimber made her way out of the training room, ready to get back to her hotel and relax for a while after another intense training session with Jesse.
It was a few hours later that Jesse showed up with some takeout food for the two of them to partake of for the night. They got settled on the sofa of Kimber’s room, Jesse removed just the top half of his armor to get more comfortable, Kimber turned on the holoprojector and the show they were expecting to watch came on just as it was starting. They ate their food quickly and loved making comments about certain things in the show, usually things that would make each other laugh. However, after a couple episodes, they both ended up falling asleep on the sofa for a few hours…and that was when things took a different turn for the night.
“No…no…please, don’t! Get back…!”
Kimber woke up to what sounded like Jesse muttering. Her eyes fluttered open and she rubbed them tiredly, having realized she had fallen asleep and the holoprojector was still going, playing a different show this time. She had slept on one end of the sofa and was surprised to see Jesse laying on the other end. Though, he was twitching and mumbling in his sleep. She leaned over to get a better look at him and realized from how fitful he was…he was having a nightmare.
“No…no…he killed them…no!” he called out.
She turned off the projector, reached over and took him by the shoulder. “Jesse? Jesse!” she cried, shaking him to wake him up.
After a moment, Jesse’s eyes burst open and he jolted up to an upright position. It took him a moment to register where he was and that he was awake. When his eyes found Kimber beside him, it seemed to dawn on him for certain that he was back in reality.
“Kimber…I didn’t realize I had fallen asleep. I’m so sorry. In the middle of the shows, too…,” he said to her, clearly trying to play it off as if nothing was wrong at all.
Naturally, she knew he was lying and asked softly, “You have nightmares, too?”
At first, he tried acting like he was confused, but the look she was giving him told him right away that she could see right through him. Then he sighed in defeat, “Yeah…I do. Do you?”
She gave him a somber nod. “Do you want to talk about it? What happened?”
Jesse reached up and rubbed the back of his neck contemplatively, heaving another sigh as he hung his head for a minute. Then he sat back up and proceeded to ask, “Did Rex ever tell you…about Umbara?”
That name didn’t sound familiar to Kimber. “Umbara? No, he didn’t,” she replied.
He let out a very light “hmph. “That doesn’t surprise me. A lot of us don’t talk about Umbara. It was a dark day for the 501st. A lot of things happened to us…to me, Rex, Kix, Fives….”
“Fives?” she repeated curiously.
Jesse gave her a puzzled look. "You don’t know about Fives? Echo never told you about him?"
She took a moment to think about it and responded, "No, I can’t recall."
"Well, in order to understand Umbara…you have to know about Fives," he told her.
Hearing that, she gave him a nod, signaling him to go ahead.
He went ahead and explained, "He was Echo’s best friend. They were in the same squad as cadets and were the only two who survived. They both were recruited into the 501st and later on, after a battle on Kamino, were promoted to ARC Troopers together."
"Fives was another ARC Trooper?" asked Kimber.
"Yeah and he was a good one. One of the best soldiers in the whole Grand Army of the Republic," he answered with a proud grin. "He and Echo were inseparable. After he thought Echo died at the Citadel, he wasn’t the same for a little while. He was devastated, especially because he watched Echo get caught in that explosion with his own eyes."
There was a tug on Kimber's heart hearing Jesse talk about Echo's incident at the Citadel, especially hearing how devastated his closest brother and friend had been because of it. That had to have been truly horrible.
"He was a loyal brother to all of us and that loyalty overshadowed his duty to the Republic on occasion, like what I’m about to tell you about Umbara," Jesse went on. "It was a dark shadow planet that had once been on the side of the Republic, but then had sided with the Separatists, so we in the 501st were sent to retake the planet. Our Jedi General had been sent back here to Coruscant and instead, we got landed with a new Jedi…General Krell."
Jesse spoke Krell's name with a tone of disdain Kimber hadn’t heard from him before. She had a feeling this Jedi he was about to tell her about was someone he didn't like or something bad had happened with him, which was strange since he was a Jedi. From what she knew and understood of the Jedi, they were protectors of the Republic and peacekeepers. She was taken aback by the explanation he then gave her:
"Krell was brash, reckless and had no regard for the lives of his soldiers. He started having us carry out plans that would bring about heavy casualties and sure enough, his plans either proved ineffective or we did lose a lot of men. He didn’t care about us or how many lives were lost. He only cared about results."
"That’s wrong," she commented.
"Believe me, we knew that better than anyone," he said back. Then he kept going on with his tale: "Eventually, we took an airbase, but it was Rex’s plan that worked, not Krell’s, and he didn’t even give us so much as a ‘thank you’. Fives then came up with an idea to commandeer some Umbaran ships and take out a supply ship that was giving us some trouble. He, myself and another one of our brothers, Hardcase, went ahead with the idea, despite Krell ordering us not to. Hardcase, unfortunately, lost his life in order to carry out the plan, but we did what we had to do. It was against orders from Krell and he ordered us to be executed without a trial."
Shocked, Kimber cried out, "What? How could he do that?"
Jesse shook his head and sighed as these particular memories of Umbara returned to his mind upon retelling them. "It was simply because he didn’t like his authority being challenged and wanted to make an example of us," he explained. "Though the rest of the squad later realized it was wrong, thanks to Fives, and they stayed our execution. Then…I wasn’t there for what happened next as I was still in the brig with Fives…but I can still see it clearly through the eyes of the others as if I’d seen it with my own." The look in his eyes grew far and distant as if he were lost in another world. There was sadness and pain, which concerned Kimber greatly.
Reaching up and laying a hand on the back of his shoulder, she asked in a troubled tone, "What happened, Jesse?"
His jaw clenched and his eyes closed momentarily. She was just about to tell him he didn't have to speak of it if it made him uncomfortable, but then he spoke up before she could, "Krell sent Rex and the others out, having gotten word that the Umbarans were mounting an attack and had disguised themselves as Clones with armor from another platoon that had been elsewhere on the planet. The others began the attack...until Rex found one of the bodies and realized it wasn’t an Umbaran, but another Clone."
"What?" she exclaimed, removing her hand.
With an affirming nod, he said, "Rex had realized it too late, but it was the other platoon they were attacking and they had been led to believe the same thing about the 501st. We lost a lot of brothers that day."
Kimber couldn't believe what she was hearing. Surely, that couldn’t be! "Krell lied to them…and made them kill their own brothers?" she questioned in utter shock and horrified disbelief.
His brow furrowed, his hands clenched into fists and, with a grimace, he stated, "He betrayed us."
"But…why? He was a Jedi! I don’t understand."
"He wasn’t a Jedi. It turned out he was trying to get in the good graces of Count Dooku by taking Umbara. That and he hated Clones...so he used us and we paid the price for his deception."
For a moment, Kimber remained silent, her eyes on the ground as she processed what Jesse had just revealed to her. It was so much and she could tell from Jesse that there was a great deal of pain; wounds that ran deep from such a terrible act of betrayal.
Then she asked hesitantly, "So…what happened after that?"
He hung his head for a second, his eyes staring distantly at the ground. "He tried to kill all of us, but we were able to incapacitate him and arrest him. However, more Umbarans were coming for the airbase and Fives realized if Krell escaped in the attack, he would tell them all of the Republic’s secrets. We knew we had to protect the Republic, so in the end…Krell was executed and we took Umbara."
It at least relieved her that the mission on Umbara had still proven successful, despite everything. "That’s what your nightmares are about: the terrible things that happened there," she observed aloud.
He nodded solemnly. "Even though in the end, our mission was a success…it didn’t leave us without scars," he told her, his voice slightly trembling. "I see Krell chasing after me with his lightsabers, I hear his sinister laughter in my head as my brothers get cut down around me. I see Clones killing other Clones. I just…can’t escape it."
Hearing all this; flashes of a past that couldn't be escaped sounded all too familiar to Kimber. "I can’t escape my past either. My nights are haunted by nightmares, too," she confided to him, hoping to offer him some form of solace. "I was a slave to the Tuskens on Tatooine and that was where the Bad Batch found me. For the longest time, I had nightmares about my enslavement and being taken by them again."
He lifted his head to look at her, sad realization in his eyes at hearing her revelation. "I am so sorry," he said softly.
In response, she went on rather casually, "I haven’t had those ones specifically in a while, but the bad dreams still persist. They just change now from time to time. I’ve dreamt of being abandoned, losing my squad, seeing them dying…or them thinking I betrayed them and not wanting me to come back." She squeezed her eyes shut and turned her head slightly as she mentioned the last one, remembering her most recent nightmares.
When she looked back at Jesse, he reached out and took her hand, giving it a gentle yet firm grasp and he tried giving her a small smile of reassurance. Once again, she froze up just a little at the contact from him. Yet she didn't pull away. It did indeed feel comforting to have that physical touch from someone again. Her fingers slowly curled up around his, clasping them back. His hand was warm and his skin was mostly soft with some calloused spots here and there, naturally. Her gaze met his momentarily and she realized he wasn't looking away from her. His eyes were looking at her intently, as if locked onto her with a purpose she couldn't figure out…and she wasn't looking away from him either.
Catching herself in the moment, Kimber awkwardly cleared her throat, averted her gaze to the floor and carefully pulled her hand away. Jesse too came back to himself and shifted his gaze away, pulling his hand back onto his lap.
To break the silence and move the conversation along, Kimber then asked a question that was now on her mind: "Whatever happened to Fives?"
He knew that question was coming eventually and let out a heavy, emotional sigh. "Sadly…he was killed not very long ago. I don’t know the whole story, but he was being charged with trying to assassinate the Chancellor. I didn’t believe it for a second, but…strange things had been happening before that."
"Strange how?" she inquired.
"One of our other brothers, Tup, had killed a Jedi without warning during a mission on Ringo Vinda and none of us knew why," he explained. "Kix believed he had just…snapped…but I don’t know if I believe that. What happened to Fives was also strange; nothing seemed to add up and I just…don’t know what to think."
"Does Echo know what happened to him?" she then asked.
Jesse gave a shrug. "I would imagine Rex told him after we rescued him, but I can’t say for sure. I hope he did, anyway." He looked down contemplatively at his hands in his lap. "Fives was a good friend and a good brother. It’s because of him that I’m still alive. He really was the best of us. I just wish he could’ve been here when they found Echo. He should’ve been there." Then he glanced at Kimber and smiled at her. "I wish he could’ve met you, too. I think he would’ve liked you a lot."
That made Kimber smile gratefully. "I’m sure I could say the same about him. Fives sounds like he was a wonderful man," she stated.
He grinned again. "He was. There was no one better than him…well, apart from Rex and myself, of course."
Kimber smirked and rolled her eyes at his statement before giving him a light shove in the arm and commenting, "Your humility continues to astound me, Jesse."
With a chuckle, he replied "I know. Sometimes I astound myself."
She shook her head at him, amused, and laughed which made him snicker more in turn. When their laughter died down, they shared a soft glance between them before Kimber leaned forward and embraced Jesse, hugging him tightly around his neck, and catching him a little off guard for a second before he hugged her back.
"I can’t believe you boys had to endure all of that," she said sorrowfully. "I can’t even fathom the horror you all must have felt at the things Krell had done simply because you didn’t agree with him." She pulled back, releasing her hold on him, and a small chuckle escaped her lips. "Imagine if he had met the Bad Batch. Oh, he would have hated them."
Jesse gave a nod in agreement. "Definitely and they would’ve certainly hated him, too. They probably would’ve killed him long before we did."
The two of them laughed once again. It felt good to have a brief moment where their fears, nightmares and bad memories were forgotten and they could focus on something better.
As they calmed down, she asked him, laying a hand on his arm, "Are you going to be okay?"
He nodded. "Yeah, I will be. I should probably get back to the barracks." With that, he stood up, grabbing the armor that he had removed and putting it back on.
"Is it safe for you to be wandering this late at night?" she questioned.
Reassuringly, he said back, "I appreciate your concern, darlin’, but I’m an ARC Trooper. I think I can handle a few thugs who may want to jump me in an alley."
He picked up his helmet and tucked it under his arm. Seeing that, she got up and walked him to the door of her room.
"All right, then. Thank you for the company, as usual, Jesse," she told him as he walked out.
The ARC Trooper looked back at her and stopped just outside the doorway. "Anytime, Kimber. Sleep well, if you can, okay?"
"As long as you do, too."
Jesse nodded and, to her shock, leaned in and gave her a soft kiss on her cheek. Her eyes widened in astonishment and her heart jumped up to her throat in the moment. When he came back, he gave her perhaps the sweetest smile he'd ever shown her, a merry twinkle in his eyes, before turning and walking away, leaving her alone by the door to her hotel room.
Kimber quickly closed the door, turned and leaned her back against the door, breathing slowly as she took in what had happened. Her hand came up to her cheek, her fingertips gingerly touching the skin Jesse's lips had just touched. Had it been just a friendly kiss…or did it mean something more? If it did…then she was in trouble.
"Oh blast…this isn't good."
Elsewhere on Coruscant, Jesse was walking briskly back to the Clone barracks. His mind kept wandering back to the kiss he gave Kimber before he had left. That wasn't something he had planned on doing at all…it had just happened. Kimber's radiant smile just sparked sweet joy inside him and he just couldn't help it. He liked his time with her, both in training and out of it. She was amazing in many ways. He admired her and her talents as well as her spirit and compassion.
However, as these thoughts came to him, he inwardly chided himself. What was he thinking? She wasn't going to be around forever. She had the Bad Batch; they were her squad and she was going to go back to them, most likely in the near future. What was he doing letting himself get so close to this woman this way? He had to pull himself together or else it was going to hurt when she left.
Though, in all honesty…he feared it was already too late.
His thoughts were broken as he approached the outside of the barracks and found Captain Rex outside, waiting for him underneath a light fixture so he could be seen.
"Where have you been, Jesse?" Rex asked him as he walked up to him.
He simply answered, "I was with Kimber."
Rex raised his eyebrows questioningly at him.
"What? Nothing happened," Jesse replied. "I went over to the hotel after our training and we were just spending time together when we both fell asleep on the sofa watching a holoshow."
The Captain's face softened in understanding, but then he took a step closer and told Jesse, "You need to be careful, brother. There’s nothing wrong with you two being friends, but don’t get too attached to her. Remember, she’s not going to be here forever. She has a squad to go back to."
It was almost as if Rex could've read Jesse's mind as he came over there, given he had just been thinking those very things. "I am painfully aware of that, Rex," he replied.
Hearing those words, Rex heaved a knowing sigh. "It’s too late, isn’t it? You’re already fond of her," he stated.
It was moments like this that Jesse almost hated how well Rex knew him. He was that obvious to the Captain, apparently. "Believe me, I tried not to be…," he told him, "...but she’s just an amazing woman. It didn’t take me very long to fail."
"You need to take a step back, Jesse, or it’s only going to hurt more when she does have to return to her squad," Rex warned him.
Jesse was starting to feel irritated, hearing Rex telling him to back off like it was that simple. "It’s not as easy for some of us to not get attached to people," he spat back as he attempted to walk past his Captain.
However, Rex took him by the shoulder and halted him. "You think it’s easy for me?" he questioned, his voice quiet but still harsh. "I’ve lost many brothers during this war and, despite my best efforts, I too got attached to some of them. I lost Hardcase, Tup and Fives the same as you." He released Jesse and stepped back, a brokenhearted look in his eyes. "Fives was shot in front of me and died in my arms, remember? Their losses have impacted me more than you know."
Jesse's throat tightened at seeing Rex being remotely emotional like this. It wasn't like him…but there was no denying the pain in Rex's eyes as he recalled the moment of Fives' death. While Jesse hadn't been there, he knew the story from Rex and he knew the sorrow Rex went through in losing Fives. Rex knew the hurt of losing people more than anyone and Jesse felt guilty for saying what he did.
"I’m sorry, Rex," he said to him.
Rex seemed to hold no grudge against him as he simply stated back, "It’s the price of war…but that doesn’t always mean the pain hurts any less when you lose someone to death or otherwise." His expression softened again as he looked intently at Jesse. "I’m just trying to spare you any semblance of pain when Kimber returns to Clone Force 99 and you don’t know when or if you’ll see her again."
Gratefully, Jesse went up to him, laid a hand on Rex's shoulder and told him, "I appreciate you looking out for me." Then he turned on his heel and walked towards the barracks, now with a lot on his mind to think about.
Rex stayed in place and watched Jesse walk away, lightly shaking his head. He hoped he hadn't made a mistake in allowing Jesse and Kimber to train together. Though, what went on between them wasn't his call. That was their business and theirs alone.

Ok hear me out: An AU of Supernatural where Sam and Dean, raised by John to seek out monsters and kill them, grow up questioning--separately and for different reasons--whether what they do is right.
Because werewolves and vampires are just people who had something bad happen to them. It isn’t their fault. Ghouls never bother the living. Shifters, kitsunes, and rugarus are just born what they are. And for most of them, there might be a way to help them not be a danger to themselves or others that isn’t a bullet through the head. But you can bet it doesn’t make a difference to John Winchester, or occur to him to look for one.
It grows in each of them, that doubt, unspoken and unshared even with each other. Maybe it starts differently for each of them, too. For Sam, maybe it’s meeting Amy. For Dean, it’s seeing the dark look in his dad’s eyes when he watches Sam. But the key is, it keeps them both up at night, how often the “monsters” they hunt are just people who are different.
It doesn’t hurt that they’re both different themselves, each in their own way, and desperately hiding it. There's no doubt in their minds what John would do if he knew.
Then Sam grows up and leaves. John goes missing. Dean finds Sam again. John dies. Suddenly they're in a world without their father at the center, and they ask (or maybe are forced to ask) the question: do the people we hunt really deserve this? Could there be another way?
They ask it with the shifter in St. Louis. They ask it the first time they encounter the demon in Meg Masters, and maybe Meg (the girl) gets a happier ending for it.
They ask it every time they run into someone their dad would have shot on sight.
Their biggest enemies quickly become other hunters, a very few excepted.
Their allies, meanwhile, become shifters and witches and any "monster" they encounter who's willing to stop and listen for a second. They adopt a policy of forgiveness and rehabilitation that would set their dad’s teeth on edge: any monster they encounter, all they have to do is be willing to stop. Stop killing, stop hurting people. Stop drinking human blood. Get some industrial-strength chains and a room with no windows for the full moon.
Madison gets to live her life. So does Gordon Walker, once they convince him he doesn’t have to be a monster just because he’s a vampire (admittedly, that one takes some doing).
And to back up a bit, when Sammy starts having visions they go to witches and seers for help. When Dean makes that stupid deal, Gabriel is already on their speed-dial.
When Castiel falls, he doesn’t do it for a righteous man. He does it for a man who’s held a vampire’s hair back while she vomited after the first time she tried drinking cow’s blood. He does it for a man who’s stood between hunters, people his dad knew and worked with, and a family of ghouls who weren’t hurting anybody living.
He does it for a man who came at him with upraised palms the first time they met, his voice gentle even though his eyes were scared, offering him a chance to explain why he burned out a woman’s eyes and made his ears bleed when he tried to talk.
A lot of hunters say the Winchesters are worse than anything else they’ve hunted, and if you asked Dean about that he’d grin from ear to ear, all teeth and very little mirth.
If being a hunter means killing people who just need some help, he’d tell you, he’ll be a monster instead, and proud of it.
They still do help humans directly sometimes, if they need it. But when they look at the apple pie life their father loved and protected, they don't see home. They’ve never had a home there. And so much ugliness lives behind floral curtains and green lawns and big neighborly smiles. Max Miller lived in a house like that, after all, and endured things no so-called monster they’ve ever encountered would ever do to a child.
They couldn't give a fuck about protecting that facade. It’s not real. They protect the people, the families--monsters included--who actually need it. Because that’s what’s real.

Humans, in the grand scheme of things, are not fast. We are not suited for intense, high speed pursuit.
And as the thing shambling after me pointed out, stealth isn't really our strong suit either. Ambush predators, our ancestors were not.
We lack the muscle bulk and natural weapons that would make assault a viable option.
But we do still have something going for us. We may not be built to sprint, but the thing following me was right, we can run. Specifically, we're distance runners. Down to our bones, we're made to run for hours. Not at top speed, but just fast enough to get where we're going.
Early humans were persistence hunters, running just fast enough to keep tracking our target, denying them rest and walking after them until they keel over from exhaustion. Compared to almost anything else on Earth, humans just keep going.
And sure, modern humans have lost a lot of that. Sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy diets have robbed many of us of the endurance that is our birthright. But it's not really gone.
If this monster had come for me 5 years ago, I would have been finished. As a tired 23 year old office worker with all the staying power of a wet cardboard box, I would have lasted maybe 15 minutes.
But after 2 marathons, 5 half marathons and 5 years of grueling training? Well, I'm as fit as I was in high school.
I may not be faster than this thing over flat ground, but in the woods? I'm gonna show this monster why it shouldn't have tried to make a meal of the former county cross-country champion.
“You can run, but you can’t hideeeeee!” The monster chasing you calls out. But the monster doesn’t know that you are a marathon runner and so you just keep on running.

≿————- ❈ ————-≾
Grief. Pain. Sadness. Anger. Guilt. Fear. Six of the most common negative emotions one human can have, and somehow, this two human children had them all. You silently watched as this human girl and her twin brother hide under the bed to protect themselves from the bomb just 3 feet from them. You can sense both their fears, it's what led you to them in the first place. The intense fear and emotional pain in their souls was intoxicating, it makes you want to devour it and take their souls straight to hell. But for some reason, you couldn't bring yourself to enhance it, to give them more pain, just for your own sake.
So even as your hunger clawed and begged to be satisfied, you ignored it, looking for something to comfort the trembling twins. Out the corner of your eye, you saw the damaged TV, making quick work of fixing it with your magic, turning it on, only to find the girl's glowing red eyes trained at your naturally red eyes. Your eyes widened as you realized she could see you. You then turned your attention to the other twin, his child-like eyes staring right at your non-existent soul.
“And you can see me. Great.” You voiced out, sighing. You didn't even know why your glamour didn't work on these two brats.
“Yes.” They answered timidly, Heavy Sokovian accents ringing throughout the air.
“Are you scared?” You ask them, tucking your wings in as to not scare them further more, much to your displeasure. You didn't really know why you're acting like this.
“No.” You smiled at their response, they were lying of course, but it was adorable nonetheless.
You debated on what to do next, you could erase their memories of you but quickly realized that you couldn't considering this human child is a witch. You sighed, you rarely interfere with human foolishness, the outcomes of said foolishness make up for your daily meal, so you leave them be, but for some reason you were being pulled to do the opposite.
“This is going to be the last time you see me.” You state coldly, refusing to get attached.
You maneuver your magic to levitate the bed they were currently hiding under, gray wisps of magic enveloping the bomb to keep them from detonating, you watch as the human girl seems fascinated with what she sees despite the life-threatening situation they are in right now. The human boy dragging his sister towards you as you envelop them in your magic as well, protecting them for what's about to come.
“Hold on.” You say, their arms wrapping around yours as you extend your wings and fly upwards, the air harmless to the children in your arms when it should have killed them based on your speed alone. You looked down at them, the human girl buried her face into you as fear mixed with relief pulsed out of her. The human boy on the other hand, looked ecstatic with the speed you are going at.
'Children' You thought, chuckling lightly.
You both dropped them off at the local Sokovian orphanage, prompting to leave when the human girl tugged on your black wings making you look back.
“Yes?” You asked
“Stay” She says, smiling. You smiled back, despite seeing how the events of today slowly dawned on both of them, pain filling both of their eyes.
You just shook your head sadly, a frown quickly settling at your face, realizing you let your guard down, before flying away, disappearing in a blink of an eye.
You never thought you would see them again years later, all grown up. You were on an errand appointed to you by your brother when you stumbled upon Sokovia. The place swarmed with ridiculous looking military. Your eyes widening as you see them displaying their powers fighting against the Avengers. You smiled softly and rolled your eyes when you saw that the human boy now had super speed and the human girl had her witchy tendencies, beautiful red wisps of magic floating through the air, as a human man, named Captain America, tumbled down the stairs.
“We have another enhanced. Female. Do not engage.” You frowned at that, they're treating her like a threat, and that didn't place right with you. Prompting to leave this problem to future you, you left
“Enhanced?” You ask yourself as you flew away, not having the courage to face the twins right now.
Days pass and you still barely have the courage to give in to the pull that they both had, you spent the days you had trying to find whatever it is that you have with the two of them, it was something you cannot explain with words. The pull was extremely hard to ignore, it was a bond of some sort. But you never made a contract with them, did you accidentally make one? But this feels like something more, it wasn't just a normal contract, it feels much more intimate, familial in a sense.
You were reading ancient books, feeling particularly annoyed at the pathetic wails of souls being tortured, annoyed that your brother decided placing his torture chamber near your library where it should be quiet, quiet enough to read without some human soul screaming their hearts out as they are force to relive their most painful memories over and over again.
Your head snapped up when you felt intense amount of anger and pain course through your veins, you dropped the book you were reading and immediately materialized on Earth, finding the human girl in a headlock.
Your vision blurred, only seeing red, you charged towards the man, slamming him to the glass, breaking it, walking forward more, you slammed him to the wall, gripping his neck, you could see green slowly seeping from it. You clenched your teeth, feeling hot flames bursting from around you, cracks emerging from the concrete as molten lava seeps through. Your magic prevented him from transforming. Your eyes a vicious black as anger pumped throughout your whole being. You could feel the monster in you, clawing it's way out, telling you to rip this man's head off and feed it to Cerberus, taking his soul to the deepest, darkest depths of hell.
“Go on. Piss me off.” You growled out, mocking his words, your black wings extending, hiding the both of you from the other's view, who stopped fighting as soon as you materialized from the ground.
Gripping harder now, you ought to kill him, enduring the pain of random blasts and the feeling of a vibranium shield repeatedly being slammed into your wings.
Soft red wisps wrapped around your wrist, comforting you, lowering your guard for a little, allowing the human girl to touch you. Her hands running through the feathers that your wings had.
“It's okay. I'm okay. You don't have to.” Her soft voice rang through your ears, making you drop the coughing man and hold her hand.
“Are you sure?” Your voice raspy from growling.
She just nodded, gripping your hand as well. You didn't even notice the commotion happening. You didn't notice Thor slamming in, zapping the capsule like thing. You didn't notice the android emerging, You didn't notice a single thing. Not until she let go of your hands did you regain senses.
“I thought you said we weren't going to see you again.” She says, making you face her
“Uhm.” You gulped, now that you took at good look at the human girl, she certainly...enhanced herself since you last saw her.
She raised her brows as her head tilted, staring up at you. You felt as thou you were the one being hunted, rather than being the hunter that you are.
“Things change, Little Witch.” You tried to steady yourself, nearly losing your footing at the blue blur that ran past you.
“Wingie! You came back!” The human boy exclaimed.
“...Wingie? What the fuck?” You thought as you narrowed your eyes at them. Watching as the woman chuckled, you looked at her pointedly, knowing that she read your mind, to which she just shrugged.
“You refer to us as human boy and human girl. We refer to you as wingie, it's a fair deal isn't it?” She smirked, her Sokovian accent sending shivers down your spine.
“It is not.” You stood straigher. A frown placed on your face as you knew you needed to leave and cut ties with them. Even if you did not want to, Demon-Human relationships are strictly forbidden, unless they willingly sign their soul to you.
As if sensing this, The human girl took a hold of your wings and tugged on it, giving you a sense of nostalgia
“Stay.” She says with finality.
“I guess it would be nice for you both to tell me your name.” You say after a moment of silence, hissing slightly when you see a mark forming on your palm.
You had given in to their bond, they have successfully pulled you in. It left you wondering how this happened and why has your father, the almighty God, allowed this. Better question, why did Luci never interrupt this bond, he just let it be, even when you asked him about it, he nonchalantly says that you should give in. What better purpose does this have?
“...Now I really need your name.” You mumble out, spotting the glowing marks they both had shining through their clothes.
“Ooooohkay. What is happening around here?” You tore your gaze from the twins to look at the tin man.
“Please do not talk tin man. This does not concern you. However, I believe that The First Son of Odin can help you satisfy your curiosity about me.” You say, gaze returning to the twins.
“Wanda.”
“Pietro.”
“Y/N.” You smiled.
“You now have a personal demon at your command.” You grin, showing your true fiery self to them, bowing like a servant, surprising them a little, Then laughed, comfortable with teasing you at how ugly you looked in your true form, which also made you laugh. A memory you will never forget.
-
“What's in your mind darling?” Wanda brings you back to reality, her hands softly holding your face.
Tony was kind enough to give you a whole floor to yourselves in the tower, it now looked like a big apartment with a 70's theme due to you and Wanda's modifications just last night. Your wife did have a knack for changing your apartment's theme to different eras, you suspect it's from her love of sitcoms so you just let her be. Besides, her sitcoms are growing on you.
“How we met.” You state, a content smile on your face while tracing the mark she had.
The room you both shared is enveloped in your magic, the illusion showing the night sky, shooting stars passing through despite being in broad daylight.
“Hmmn. You traveled far.” She chuckled, nuzzling further into your wings. You chuckled.
“You love my wings more than me, my love, why must you be like this?” You teased her
“They're softer than you.” She teased back
“You wound me little witch.” You lean in to kiss her, only to be interrupted, your illusion breaking as the door slammed open
“EW EW EW EW EW!” A blue blur barged in, only to run out again.
You huffed out in annoyance, It's 7am and Pietro is already annoying you.
“Why must I also have a bond with that prick.” You grumbled under your breath, burying your face into Wanda's neck.
“Because he's my brother, and you, my love, are my wife. That makes you his sister as well.” She says, pecking your lips multiple times, her Sokovian accent slipping out.
“Mrs. Maximoff, and Other Mrs. Maximoff. Ms. Romanoff wanted me to remind you of your training at 8:30 am after breakfast. And Mr. Stark is demanding you both to have breakfast with the team” FRIDAY, the AI's voice rang out.
“Thank you FRIDAY.” You muttered out, begrudgingly getting up from your shared bed, your wings limp as if sharing your sadness, much to your wife's amusement.
“I don't get it. At all. We've been doing this for 8 years now. Why do I still have to train?” You whined, walking into the dining room where the rest of the Avengers are.
“Because, you little devil, you rely on your powers too much. Hand-to-hand combat is necessary.” Natasha pats your back, grabbing her newly made peanut butter sandwich.
Natasha met you after Bruce saved her from Ultron, your powers saved her by smashing in two robots to the ground, which seemed to amuse her, plus seeing you with horns made her laugh. The next day, she approached you asking if you wanted to spar with her, and you cockily said yes, boasting that you'll beat her in a minute. You were proven wrong, your ass got handed to you every single time, proving that you can't make it through life without your powers.
“And yet, you don't tell Tony to train.” You deadpanned at Natasha, and she looked at you like how an angry mother looks at a child throwing a tantrum.
You accidentally read Natasha's mind one day when you were starving, refusing to feed off your family's emotions, despite them being filled with negative emotions because, the receiver of a demon feeding feels intense pain as said demon sucks their emotions out, leaving them exhausted, sometimes in a coma, and sometimes just dead, it's soul going straight down to hell. She was thinking about how she thinks of you as her daughter, albeit being thousands of years older than her. You just shrugged and went along with it, finding it funny, until you accidentally called her 'Mom' when she got shot, sending the one who shot her down to the pits of hell. And since then it just stuck.
“Because I'm a genius, devilious.” You rolled your eyes at his ego and his horrible nickname.
“Dumbass.” You murmured
“Bitch.” He shot back
“Jerk.” You retaliated. Puffing your wings up to hopefully intimidate him but he just powered up his reactor and threatened to blast you.
“Okay, enough from the both of you.” Wanda gave you a pointed look which had you pouting
“No powers on the dining table!” Pepper scolded.
“Sorry.” you mumbled, directing your attention to the elevator doors as they open to reveal Clint on the phone.
Your eyes drifted to Pietro as you both shared a smirk, if there's one thing that you both could agree on, is that you both love to piss off Clint, who despite being retired, visits the tower often.
You subtly use your powers to tie Clint's shoelaces together as Pietro sped to him, taking his phone.
“Hey!” He complained, taking a step to run after Pietro only to slam, face first into a pillow?
Your eyes then lifted up to see Wanda's glowing eyes, her hands wrapped with a red mist as you see Pietro being dragged into the room by said mist.
“Oh shit.” You murmured, seeing her head tilt, it's common knowledge to run when Wanda tilts her head, it's terrifying as fuck.
“...We can talk about this...” You say, slowly backing up. She just raised her brows
“Whipped.” Clint whispered tauntingly as he passed you
“Take it to the training room kids.” Natasha says, her steaming black coffee nestled in her palms
“I didn't even eat yet.” You whined, plopping yourself away from your wife, beside the metal armed man who pushed the plate of toast towards you.
“Are we still going to ignore how devilious is a literal demon and she's scared of Wondie?” Tony teased, bouncing Morgan on his lap while she drinks her milk.
“Okay. Tony, Tony, Tony. Stare me straight in the eyes, look at me, look, look. Come on, look into my eyes-”
“Yes, I'm looking into your “natural” red eyes, they still look like contacts” He says, air quoting the word natural
“First of all, they are natural. Second, stare right into my eyes and tell me that my wife isn't the MOST TERRIFYING PERSON YOU EVER MET!?”
“Meh.” He says, smirking
“Oh-hoho! Ouch.” You say playfully with a grimace, jaw dropping with a look of offense on your face.
“Let's just agree that wives are terrifying, yes?” You say quickly, motioning to Pepper who was chopping up some food for her daughter, who held up the knife as a response to your statement.
“And this is why I will never get married.” Natasha says, disposing of her plates to the sink before motioning to you.
“I can change that. Do you want a dog too?” Sam asks, grinning
“Get ready to get your ass kicked, Wilson.” You grinned seeing Nat's glare
“Language.” Tony says, motioning to his kid while winking at Steve who rolled his eyes, crossing his arms. The fitted shirt threatening to rip. You always wondered why Steve liked to wear clothes that's one size smaller that what he should be wearing. Maybe it was because of Bucky, or Nat, or both. You never knew with that man.
“It's been 8 years. Why is that still a thing?” Steve groan, making you all laugh.
Your laugh slowly faded, staring at your family, your weird but still very much your family, laughing and having fun without a care in the world, it's memories like these that you want to remember.
You don't want to remember the sacrifices you had to make to get this very moment, the actions you made were selfish yet necessary, for your universe at least. You had the power and the chance to change everything 5 years ago, and you took that chance without hesitation, even if it meant breaking the fabric of the universe itself.
You just hoped that the Avengers from the other universes wouldn't hate you so much for adding to their pain. After all, you did avert what should have happened in your universe, into another universe where the people of earth and it's mightiest heroes, suffered twice. Their pain increasing tenth fold as you merged two problems into one.
The consequence that you have to endure for that however, was white-hot pain. You will have to endure all the universe's pain, nightmares and visions of the battle that should have happened will continue to plague you, visions of Wanda in pain, visions of Tony Stark dying, visions of his funeral, visions of Natasha's death will play in your head over and over again. Your own personal hell.
But it's worth it right? …right? You'd do anything to make your family happy... right? You'd do anything to make her happy. It's worth it. It was definitely worth it... right?

Danny claims Phantom is his boyfriend to save him from his parents’ operation table, but Jack and Maddie won't make it that easy for them
Phantom passed out beneath the electrifying force of a ghost net, frightened and angry and hurt, so when he woke up, the howl that had been trapped in his chest burst free. He screamed, using all the power he could force through his vocal cords. His ghostly wail. Panicked shouting erupted. Someone yelled about a sedative. Phantom yelled louder, fear making him desperate.
If they knocked him out again before he had a chance to escape--
A warm body fell over him, chest to chest, core to heart. "Phantom, stop!"
The power Phantom had been channeling into his throat recoiled, cancelled itself out. His scream, absent of any real power, became that of a frightened teenager, and, embarrassingly, when he stopped screaming, it turned into a sob.
"It's okay," the human--Danny--said. He stroked warm fingers through Phantom's hair. "It's okay." Quieter then, whispered quickly into his ear, Danny added, "I have a plan."
Phantom's mind was too frazzled to make any sense of what that could mean, but if Danny was there...Phantom couldn't destroy whatever lab he was in without killing his friend in the process. Lashing out against the ones that had hurt him was no longer an option.
"Danny," Phantom gasped, his voice raw, slightly scratchy. Phantom turned his head until his cheek could press against Danny's, stealing a moment's guilty pleasure. To his surprise, Danny didn't pull away.
In fact, he pressed closer and turned his head toward Phantom in return. Phantom felt Danny's lips brush against his cheek, and he was so startled he almost missed those lips moving as Danny urgently whispered, "Play along."
Phantom pried his eyes open. "What?"
Jack appeared above them. Phantom tensed as the man's hardened eyes met his. Those dark blue eyes softened as they slid to his son, however. "Okay, Danny." Jack clamped a large hand over Danny's shoulder. "You made your point."
Danny slowly lifted himself off Phantom.
Phantom wanted to protest or at least wrap his arms around Danny to stop him--an impossible desire since there was something pinning his wrists to the examination table--but one look at Jack's wary face warned Phantom not to press his luck. Phantom reluctantly endured the loss of Danny's body heat and the comfort he had offered as a shield between Phantom and Danny's parents.
Before he could feel too abandoned, however, Danny's hand grabbed Phantom's and squeezed. Phantom fought against the urge to widen his eyes.
"Play along" Danny had said. Danny wanted Phantom to follow his lead, and right now, that apparently meant...holding hands.
To test that theory, Phantom spread his fingers apart. Danny's fingers slotted into the resulting gap and folded over the back of Phantom's hand. Phantom could feel his cheeks getting cold, and he desperately hoped he wasn't blushing in front of Danny's parents.
"So that's it?" Danny asked, his tone somehow conveying wariness and hope at the same time. "You'll let him go?"
Maddie sighed. Phantom heard her footsteps, and he turned his head to watch her approach. He couldn't see her eyes since, unlike Jack, she had pulled her hood up, but the straight, thin line of her lips gave Phantom the impression she was unhappy about something.
"With restrictions," she said. She pressed a button on the side of the table, and the force holding Phantom's wrists and ankles to the table vanished. He sat up quickly--too quickly for the ghost hunters because they flinched back--and scooted closer to Danny, holding tight to the human's hand. The hunters watched him, waiting, but when Phantom didn't move any farther or try to fly away, they exchanged frowns with each other.
"Restrictions?" Danny asked.
In answer, Maddie held out a metal bracelet. Like the Fenton Thermos, the seems along the metal sheet were green, filled with ectoplasm that ran along the circular design. "To suppress his powers."
Phantom wrinkled his nose and glared at the device. Why she was handing it to Danny instead of clamping it over Phantom's wrist herself, prior to letting him go, Phantom didn't understand, but if they were expecting Danny to put that on him, they were in for a surprise.
Indeed, Danny accepted the device but didn't clamp it to Phantom's wrist. "Can we go now?" he asked.
Maddie's lips pressed even tighter together.
Jack wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "We'll be talking about this more in the morning, young man."
"Right." Danny stepped away from the table and tugged on Phantom's arm, urging him to follow. "Looking forward to it."
Phantom didn't trust his legs to support him, so, even though the ghost hunters were watching him with narrowed eyes and frowning lips, Phantom levitated off the table and floated after Danny. Danny was walking fast, faster than Phantom could fly at the moment, but Phantom had no complaints about the speed even though Danny was dragging him through the air. He glanced warily behind them. Jack and Maddie were still watching them...but they weren't following and they hadn't pulled out an antighost device.
Danny trotted up the stairs, cutting off Phantom's view.
Just as well, Phantom thought, shivering.
That he had woken up in one piece after the hunters who swore to tear him apart had finally captured him was surprise enough, but that they were letting him go? And in their son's company? With no supervision?
They were halfway through the living room when the question finally burst free of Phantom's control. "What did you tell them?"
Danny glanced at him over his shoulder, met Phantom's eyes, before jerking his head back around. His pace didn't slow. "I, uh...Once we get to my room. I can fill you in then."
Although Phantom could no longer see Danny's face, the back of the human's neck and the tips of his ears had darkened to a suspicious pink color.
He's blushing, Phantom realized. He glanced down at their still clasped hands and felt his own blush, much colder and greener than the human variety, flood his cheeks.
He stopped floating after Danny but didn't let go of his hand, forcing Danny to jerk to a halt. "Danny..." he said, voice low, "what did you tell them?"
Danny hunched his shoulders and ducked his head. Phantom floated around to his front, but Danny turned his head away. "I...they, uh, they were going to experiment on you, and I, um, I might have panicked. A little."
"Okay..." Phantom urged, speaking gently, "I'm not ungrateful, Danny. You probably saved my life! Well, afterlife. But how did you convince them to stop? They've been threatening to tear me apart pretty much since I arrived in your dimension."
Danny glanced at Phantom from the corner of his eye. "Promise you uh..." Danny winced and pinched his eyes closed. "Promise you won't get mad?"
Phantom raised an eyebrow. "I promise."
Danny breathed in deeply. "Itoldthemweweredating."
As garbled as the words were, Phantom heard the last one all-too clearly. His levitation cancelled out and he dropped to the floor. As he had expected, his legs collapsed under him and he fell forward, into Danny. Danny let go of Phantom's hand and wrapped his arms around Phantom's shoulders, supporting him as Phantom clung to his shirt.
"D-dating?" Phantom gasped. "We're dating?"
Had he missed something? Wasn't there a...process? He was sure kissing would have been involved at some point. A confession of feelings at the very least.
"No!" Danny said hurriedly. "Well...uh, kind of? My parents think we are so we have to pretend, but...it's just pretend. Don't freak out!"
"Oh." Did he sound too disappointed? Hopefully all Danny heard was his confusion and not Phantom's rising hope shattering on the floor. He shifted his feet, eager to pull away from Danny, but his legs weren't as steady as he would like. He managed to stand on his own only by virtue of holding onto Danny's shirt. "And they were okay with that?"
Danny wrinkled his nose. He started to pull his arms away, stopped, and settled them around Phantom's shoulders again as a loose hug.
Phantom felt a swooping sensation in his stomach.
"Not so much 'okay' as..." Danny bit his lip as he thought, trying to put Jack's and Maddie's reactions into words. "I don't know...They're letting me get away with it, but I think they might be testing us."
"Testing us?"
Danny removed one arm from his loose embrace and held up the cuff Maddie had given him between them. Phantom flinched back, almost pulling out of Danny's hug.
Almost.
Danny glared at the device, as distrustful as Phantom. "If you're still here tomorrow morning, with this suppressing your powers, then they'll know we're serious about being in a relationship. If you're not...they'll start hunting you again. And...I'm not sure I could stop them a second time."
Phantom shivered. He had been strapped to their examination table once already. If Danny hadn't been there...he didn't want to think about it. "Without my powers," he said slowly, "I will be helpless. I will have to trust you to keep me safe and them to keep their word."
Danny nodded unhappily.
Phantom eyed the device.
On one hand, he didn't trust the Fenton adults. They had never shown him an ounce of kindness or understanding. They had been willing to electrocute him into unconsciousness and strap him to a table without any consideration for him as a person. Who knew what else they had planned to do with him once he was in their clutches.
On the other hand...he wanted to earn their respect. He wanted to work with them to protect the town from ghosts, he wanted their help understanding his own powers, he wanted to no longer fear them. The cuff and Danny's offer represented a chance wherein things could get better if he just had the courage.
And...fake though it would be, the idea of dating Danny even for the sake of his safety appealed to him greatly. Just holding his hand had made Phantom's soul soar. What more would Danny allow to maintain the illusion of a relationship?
Cuddling?
Kissing?
Phantom's cheeks frosted and he quickly pushed the thought aside. Danny was only doing it to protect him. Phantom didn't want to take advantage of Danny's kindness, no matter how tempting. Bad enough he would be going into the fake relationship with secret feelings for Danny, he didn't need to make things worse for Danny by asking for a kiss in front of his parents.
Even if Phantom's daydreams of such a thing were deeply thrilling...
He couldn't pass up this chance. A chance to prove himself to the ghost hunters and date their son? At the same time? He had to take it. It was everything he wanted, what he had dreamed about every time he flew past Fenton Works.
Phantom sighed and reached for the cuff.
Instead of handing it to him, Danny jerked it closer to his chest, his eyes wide. "Phantom?"
"The benefits outweigh the risks, don't you think?" Phantom whispered. "I can't pass up this chance." Instead of reaching for the cuff again, Phantom turned his hand over, holding out his palm. "Just keep me safe. I trust you."
Danny searched his expression, but Phantom's resolve was strong, held in place as much by his attraction to Danny as by his desire to be accepted by the Fentons. Danny's shoulders slumped. Reluctantly, he placed the cuff in Phantom's hand.
"If anything happens to you because of this--" Danny began, only to cut himself off. He grimaced. "Phantom..."
Phantom glanced up from the cuff and smiled reassuringly at Danny. "I'll be fine. Just watch, by this time next week, you will actually be in love with me and your parents will declare me part of the family!"
Before Danny had a chance to respond, Phantom snapped the cuff shut.
Pain exploded inside him. He screamed, falling to his knees. Danny dropped to the floor beside him, calling his name. He held onto Phantom's arms and stared anxiously at his face, beautiful blue eyes wide and frightened.
"I'm fine," Phantom gasped, staring into those eyes. "I'm fine. It's just. Rebound. I was. I was healing myself. The energy I was using started burning. But I'm fine. I'm fine."
So long as he didn't use his powers.
Apparently, the cuff didn't so much suppress his powers as make using them painful. That was good, because if his or Danny's life was ever truly in danger, Phantom could still save them.
It was bad because...it felt a little like a shock collar.
Phantom cringed. Shivered.
Before he could say anything else, Danny wrapped his arms around Phantom's neck and hugged him tight. Phantom froze for a moment, stunned. Danny had never hugged him before. Not like that.
We're supposed to be dating, he reminded himself. Hugging is part of the package.
Phantom's stomach swooped again. He slipped his own arms around Danny's waist before Danny could get any ideas about pulling away too soon and returned the tight embrace, turning his head so he could press his face against Danny's neck. It was a little awkward, what with the way they were both sitting on their knees, forced to lean forward to maintain the hug, but Phantom didn't think he could convince Danny to climb onto his lap just yet.
For that matter, if Phantom tried climbing onto Danny's, the human might squeak and retreat in a flustered panic.
"You sure you're okay?" Danny whispered.
"Yes." Phantom felt Danny shiver in his arms, likely due to Phantom's speaking the word against his neck, but Phantom couldn't bear to leave the warmth of his embrace yet. "I'll tell you more once you get to your room." He hesitated. "I can't heal or use more powers anymore, though. Can you..."
"Carry you?"
"Yes."
"Yeah." Danny broke the embrace but didn't go far. He shifted around Phantom until he was pressed against his side, one arm wrapping around his shoulders. "Lean back," he instructed. "I have to get your legs."
Phantom leaned backward, delighted to feel Danny's arm catching him, holding him. He untucked his legs from under himself, and as soon as his knees were in position, Danny slid his arm under them.
"Ready?" Danny asked.
Phantom nodded.
It was strange to be lifted by someone else rather than by his own powers, but as Phantom found himself cradled in Danny's arms, held securely against his chest, he couldn't resist smiling. He had wondered what it would feel like.
Danny climbed to his feet--an unsteady movement that prompted Phantom to wrap an arm around Danny's neck--and looked toward the staircase. "This might get a little awkward," he warned.
Phantom laid his head on Danny's shoulder and let out a quiet breath. "Yeah," he agreed. The staircase was narrow, but Phantom suspected Danny's strength was about to be tested as well. "Take your time. No hurry here."
Danny snorted. "Right. You just rest, I'll do all the hard work."
"For once."
Danny laughed. "Who just saved your life?"
"My boyfriend."
Danny cleared his throat, a blush coloring his cheeks again. “Yeah. Right. I’ll just…” He walked toward the staircase, his eyes carefully avoiding Phantom’s. “I guess I should...get used to to being called that.” His blush worsened. “Your boyfriend. Oh man…”
“It was your idea,” Phantom reminded him mercilessly. He closed his eyes and tried to keep his smile from looking too besotted. He suspected he would regret the ruse later, once his feelings felt thoroughly played, but for now it was enough to feel Danny’s arms around him as he carried him up the stairs, safe and with the potential of turning the Fentons from enemies to allies within reach.

Keep Me From You
For the square "Temporary amnesia" on @girl-next-door-writes make me feel bingo
Warnings: mention of injury,cursing
Word Count: 10,201
Smidge of angst but lots of fluff
“Dean I’m fine. A few scratches but I’ll be home soon and you’re more than welcome to play nurse” You’d left a few days before to help Claire out on a hunt and had called him to say you were only about an hour out from Lebanon. “So you want me to wear the uniform and all?” he teased and heard you laugh. That was a sound that he’d always loved. “Of course I want the uniform, why would you even ask?” A smile slipped onto his face as hearing just how truly happy you sounded to be coming home to him. He’d never imagined getting this. Someone who really did love him and not only understood the life but lived it as well. “I’ll see you soon sweetheart” “Better be waiting for me at the door….” Your sentence was cut short by the sound of tires squealing then a hard hit.
Dean knew a wreck when he heard one and his heart fell to his feet “Y/N!” when you didn’t reply he screamed your name again which brought Sam running into the room. “What’s wrong?” Dean was already on his feet grabbing the keys to the impala “Y/N’s been in a wreck. We gotta get to her”
By the time Dean and Sam rolled on scene a passerby had called 911. Multiple cop cars, a couple ambulances and even a fire truck had the night lit brightly. Dean barely stopped the car from rolling before he was jumping out. Your car was on it’s side, the driver door crumpled in. “Y/N!” before he could get close Sam grabbed him along with three of the firemen on scene “Sir! We already got her out! She’s in the ambulance!”
Dean looked to see the ambulance in question pulling away “Is she alive?” The firemen nodded solemnly “She’s in critical condition but she’s alive” Sam pulled him back towards the impala “C’mon we’ll beat them to the hospital. We know her Dean she’s strong” Sam nodded to the firemen that he had Dean so they headed to finish cleaning up the scene. Dean looked at your car once more before following Sam “If the other driver isn’t in bad shape..I’ll kill em”
------
Sam took the lead to speak with the doctors because by the time they got to the hospital he didn’t really trust Dean to not throw a punch. “Mr Evanson..your sister in law is in critical condition as you were told at the scene. She was hit by a drunk driver that ran a red light. She’s got multiple contusions, a fractured skull and a dislocated shoulder” the fake names had you as Dean’s wife should something like this happen and Eileen as Sam’s. Helped to have insurance and provided a cover story so all of you could get updates on each other should injuries ever occur severe enough to warrant a hospital trip.
Before Sam could open his mouth to ask any questions further about your condition Dean spoke up “Let me guess the bastard that hit her is just fine right?” Sam couldn’t really blame Dean. You were one of his best friends and knowing you made it out of a hunt just fine to turn around and get hurt this severely by an idiot who drank too much and chose to get behind the wheel was more than upsetting. “Mr Evanson I know you’re upset but I assure you we’re doing everything for your wife we can” Sam could tell Dean was doing what he did best which was to lean into anger more than any other emotion so before he could fire off threats to a doctor or worse Sam grabbed his arm then looked back at the doctor “When can we see her?” “As soon as she’s settled into the room I’ll send a nurse out to get both of you”
The moment the doctor stepped away Dean spun around and hit the wall hard enough his fist left a hole in the plaster. “She was talking to me Sam. What if I distracted her? What if she would’ve seen him sooner if she hadn’t been on the phone?” “Dean, don't do that to yourself. This isn’t your fault” It shocked Sam more than anything to see Dean wasn’t trying to hide the tears in his eyes when he faced him “I can’t lose her Sammy” “You won’t. I’m gonna call Eileen and Jody to let them know. She’ll be ok. Let the doctors do what they can then if need be we’ll find other means to help her. She’s strong, she’s a fighter and honestly I think it would take a lot more than a wreck to keep her from your side” “Let’s hope you’re right”
------
A little over an hour passed with Sam and Dean pacing across the waiting room. The other inhabitants of it and staff alike were giving both men a wide berth, Dean even moreso. The air around him was thick with the mixture of anger at you being in this shape and fear at the possibility of losing you.
When a nurse finally walked in and asked “Mr Evanson and brother?” Dean snatched his head up “Over here” she smiled warmly at him “Your wife is out of surgery and stable. Would you and your brother like to see her?” “Please” Dean managed trying to remember it wasn’t this woman’s fault you were hurt.
------
The walk to your room felt longer than anything Dean had even endured. When he walked in to see your still form he could feel his hands ball into fists. You were the single most important person on the face of the earth to him besides Sam. Your head was bandaged, your left shoulder was in a sling and both arms had gauze nearly covering every surface. “When’s she gonna wake up?” Sam asked knowing Dean needed an answer but also knowing his brother wouldn’t be very good at communicating at the moment.
“That’s a tricky question. It’s really up to her. She’s in stable condition, there’s no bleeding on her brain. Now it’s just up to her body” “Thank you. Can we stay with her a while?” “You both can stay an hour but only one can stay overnight” “Thank you” the nurse walked away and Sam turned back to see Dean was motionless at the foot of your bed.
“Dean?” Sam called jarring him out of his thoughts. “She’s a hunter. I’ve seen her hurt and I’ve known that there was always a possibility of something happening to one of us but she was fine, she was headed home and laughing” Dean had walked up next to your bed and left his fingers barely brush against the leather bracelet tied around your wrist. It was a gris-gris gifted to you by a witch in New Orleans three years before, just a couple months before you and Dean had gotten together actually.
You’d helped her out and it was supposed to protect you from evil. You hadn’t taken it off since citing that it was a lucky charm too considering you hadn’t gotten seriously injured on a hunt in quite a while. Turned out it only worked on supernatural beings not human actions. “She’s gonna be ok Dean” Sam repeated as Dean gently took your hand in both of his and sat down in the chair next to the bed before looking up at his little brother “How can you be so sure?” “I’ve seen her fight and I’ve seen how much she loves you. She’s not leaving us like this”
------
The two of them stayed like that for the next hour barely talking, simply watching you breathe. When the hour passed Sam headed back to the bunker while Dean stayed rooted in the chair holding your hand. “Remember when we first met? God I thought you hated me because of my dad..he had a habit of turning people into enemies. I’ve never seen Bobby laugh as hard as talking about the time you backed dad down on a hunt by calling him a washed out jarhead that didn’t know a vampire from a rugaru. Baby you’ve survived so much..you’re stronger than anyone I know” he didn’t even realize he was crying before the droplet hit your hand.
“Please come back to me. I don’t want to do this without you. I love you” he nearly whispered the last part willing you to hear him and open your eyes.
------
For three days Dean sat at your side. Sam would bring food and clothes. Eileen had of course headed back to Lebanon when she heard what happened and Jody along with all the girls had been in near constant contact. You had so many people behind you but the horrifying reality was it didn’t matter how much backup you had this time. This fight was a solo one.
The nurses and doctors assured him that you were healing. Your body was simply mending itself and keeping you asleep to save energy to do so. He didn’t care about anything they said he needed you awake to see for himself that you were ok.
It was during visitor hours so Eileen was sitting across the room flipping through a magazine while Sam had gone after coffee. The hardest thing for any of them was simply being forced to sit around and wait to see if you’d wake up on your own. Of course Rowena was digging around to see about some spells to help speed up healing but those were a bit fragile and out of her usual wheelhouse which was to cause damage to someone instead of healing them.
“Dean they were out of sugar so I had to put artificial sweetener in yours” Sam spoke from the doorway as he walked into the room. Dean shrugged “I don’t care” Sam shared a look with Eileen when he handed her coffee over. She signed “I’m worried about him” so Sam nodded and mouthed “Me too” before walking over to hold Dean’s coffee out to him.
Dean took it then looked back at the bed “Why isn’t she awake yet Sammy?” “Head injuries take a little more to heal Dean” Sam offered but knew it was of little solace. All of them wanted nothing more than for you to wake up. Sam walked back over to stand next to Eileen but a movement of your hand had all of them on their feet and next to the bed “Y/N?” Dean spoke first and when you opened your eyes they all shared a sigh of relief “Thank god baby” Dean breathed moving to press a kiss to your lips but you snatched your head away “Dean, what the hell?”
------
Your head felt like it’d been run over by a truck. You felt like you were drunk and there wasn’t a body part that didn’t hurt. When you finally forced your eyes open you realized you were in a hospital room. Sam, Dean and Eileen was next to your bed meaning you must have gotten hurt on a hunt but you couldn’t remember how.
“Thank god baby” baby? Did Dean just call you baby? Before you could ask he leaned forward as if to kiss you so you snatched your head away not missing the look on his face as you said “Dean, what the hell?”
“Y/N? What's the last thing you remember?” Eileen asked stepping closer to the bed while Dean backed away obviously hurt but you weren’t sure why he’d called you baby or tried to kiss you. You were friends yeah but he’d never acted like he had those feelings for you. You realized your head hurt even worse when you tried to think of why he would be hurt but a memory finally came to you of you and Eileen working a shifter case in Austin. “The shifter?” you asked hesitantly and saw her eyes widened.
“Eileen? What’s wrong?” you asked grimacing when you tried to sit up further only to realize your left arm was in a sling. Sam moved to help you and you noticed Dean looking rather lost standing off to the side of the room. She looked over at him sympathetically before finally saying “Y/N that case was over three years ago”
------
Three years? You’d lost three years worth of memories. Dean had slipped out the room after alerting the Doctor Rhodes you were awake and once Eileen assured Sam she’d stay at your side he went after his brother. You were only half listening to the doctors as they gave a run down of the wreck you’d been in and the injuries you’d received. “Well if you’re saying my brain is fine why the hell do I have a three year gap in my memory?” you knew you were being a bit blunt but given the circumstances you felt it was warranted.
“Mrs Evanson this is common in an injury like yours” the nurse nearest you spoke so you cut your eyes at Eileen silently questioning the name they’d called you. She smiled and touched Doctor Rhodes on the shoulder. When he turned to look at her she motioned to you “Can I have a few moments alone with her before you take her for tests?” he looked back at you then nodded. After he and the nurses finally exited your room giving a warning that transport would be there in twenty to take you down for a cat scan Eileen came over and sat gently on the side of your bed facing you “Ask” You looked around the room eyes settling on Dean’s jacket that he’d left draped over the back of one of the chairs “What have I missed?” she followed your line of sight over her shoulder then smiled sadly before looking back at you “The shifter case was only a month before you and Dean got together” “We’ve been together three years?” you asked making sure you were facing her fully as you spoke. “Yeah. For the insurance he’s listed as your husband and Sam’s listed as mine since me and him have been together two and a half years”
You felt tears sting your eyes as the realization of why Dean had looked so hurt when you pulled away from him hit you at once “Why don’t I remember? God he must hate me” She covered your right hand with hers lacing your fingers together and the familiarity of that small action bought a smile to your face as she leaned down to look you in the eye before saying “Believe me when I say there is nothing on earth you could do to make that man hate you sweetie. Now I’ll be here when they get you back from the tests but I’m gonna go find him and Sam in the meantime ok?” you nodded not trusting your voice at the moment so she kissed your forehead then nodded to the nurse that had just just stepped into the door before walking out.
------
Eileen found Sam and Dean outside in the parking lot. They were leaned against the side of the impala staring at the entrance of the hospital. When they saw her they both pushed off the car Sam getting to her side first while Dean was a little slower to approach “How is she?” Sam asked and Eileen shrugged “She found out she’s missing three years. How would you be?” Then her eyes drifted over to Dean “She’s afraid you’re gonna hate her because she doesn’t remember being with you” “I could never hate her especially for something that’s not her fault” he quickly replied and she nodded “That’s what I told her but I think you need to be in the room too when she gets back from having her scans done”
------
You were in short terrified. The scans showed that your skull was healing quite well actually and as far as structural wise your brain was in good shape and according to Doctor Rhodes your memory loss was more than likely temporary. The bad news? In cases like yours those memories could return in a matter of weeks or a matter of years. There was no way to estimate the amount of time it would take from one person to the next.
“When can I go home?” you asked adding in your head the fact that you weren’t exactly sure where home was these days. “In a couple days at this rate and I’d say within two to four weeks you can return to normal life” There was a knock on the door and one of the nurses peeked her head in “Her husband, brother in law and sister in law want to come in” Doctor Rhodes looked back at you so you nodded with a small smile “Do you remind going back over what you’ve told me?”
“Of course” he nodded to the nurse so she stepped back out and a moment later Eileen walked in trailed by Sam then finally Dean “Mr Evanson your wife asked me to go over the findings from her test with the three of you” you barely met Dean’s eyes while he listened to Doctor Rhodes despite the fact that his gaze never left your face. When the doctor mentioned you’d be going home in a couple days if you stayed healing at this rate Dean shared a look with Eileen that you didn’t miss before the three of them thanked the doctor then he excused himself.
“So turns out I was right Dean, you do have the harder head” you tried to tease but heard your voice fall flat at the end. You wanted nothing more to remember the last three years of your life. The three people standing in front of you meant the most to you yet you could only remember so much and apparently now shared your life with one of them but couldn’t so much as remember ever sharing a kiss with him.
“Y/N..Eileen told me what you said” Dean spoke, stepping closer to the bed. He tapped the bed close to your leg but didn’t touch you “Sweetheart there’s nothing that could make me hate you. I was on the phone with you when the wreck happened. I’ve never been more afraid in my life and just seeing you awake? That’s a win for me” “I want to remember if that helps any Dean.I wish I did because it seems we’re happy” “I’d like to think we are” he replied with a small smile. You moved your leg closer to his hand so he took the hint to gently touch you near your ankle.
“While we’re all here talking..can someone tell me where is home for me?” you asked embarrassed over not being able to remember such a small detail “Um you live at the bunker” Sam answered cutting his eyes at Dean who nodded “You’ve been living there for about two years full time” “Oh then I guess we’re really serious then huh?” your voice was low enough you weren’t exactly sure Dean had heard you until he said “Yeah” meeting your eyes for a second before clearing his throat “Um visitation is over in an hour. I was gonna stay but if that’s weird for you I’m sure Eileen or Sam would”
“Of course” they both spoke over each other then shared a small smile. Your heart ached seeing the look on Dean’s face at the two of them so in sync while you didn’t remember him. “Maybe Eileen could stay? She can help fill in some blanks since I remember hunting with her last?” you offered and Dean nodded “Of course sweet..Y/N” you noticed how he stopped himself from calling you sweetheart. Christ you’d been friends with Dean for so long. He was the best man you’d ever known but you also knew he had the self worth of a grape and you could only imagine what this was doing to him. “Thank you Dean” you whispered and he smiled slightly “Of course”
------
Dean didn’t really talk much before him and Sam left for the night but he did ask if you wanted him to bring you a change of clothes since the nurse said you could shower with assistance the next morning. “Please” you told him and with a sharp nod he was out of the room. Sam left a quick kiss on Eileen’s lips then one on your forehead before quickly following after him.
You watched the door where they’d disappeared for several seconds before Eileen touched your arm gently and you jumped which pulled a small smile to her face “Are you ok?” she asked so you nodded then turned your head to look at her fully “I was in love with him wasn’t I?” she slowly nodded. You let out a breath then leaned your head back against the pillows before asking “How did that shifter case turn out anyways?” she laughed then went into the story talking and signing what had happened trying to catch you up to speed without overwhelming you.
------
Sam found Dean sitting in the library at one of the long tables around three in the morning. There was a bottle of bourbon in front of him and a glass with a piece of ice watering down what of the brown liquid was in it. “Couldn’t sleep?” he asked, pulling the chair out across from Dean after grabbing himself a glass. Dean cut his eyes up at him “Would you be able to if it was Eileen?” “No” Sam wasn’t even going to attempt to lie, Dean knew him too well. “I don’t want to put any stress on her because she doesn’t remember”
“You’re not. She knows now that you’re not mad that she doesn’t remember. Give Eileen a little time to ease her into the last few years besides Doctor Rhodes said her memory could be fully back within a couple weeks” “Or a couple years” Dean interrupted which earned him a glare from Sam “If you’ve ever had faith in anything..have faith in Y/N” “What if this is nature’s way of a course correction? She deserves better than me and maybe this is the universe trying to say that”
Sam reached over and pulled the glass out of Dean’s grip then moved the bottle for good measure before saying “The only thing this says is that assholes shouldn’t drink and drive. She’s coming home in a couple days Dean and the familiar setting may help her memory..Rowena is getting there with the spells especially now that she knows to tweak it to memory wise. We’re gonna get her memory back Dean..we will” “I hope you’re right Sam, I really do”
------
Today was a big step in the right direction. You were finally checking out the hospital to head home. Eileen had mentioned Cas would be at the bunker when you got there so that meant at least for your physical wounds you could get healed, who knows maybe angel mojo would effect your memory as well? Not likely but it didn’t hurt to hope did it?
When the nurse knocked on the door she smiled to see you were tying your sneakers onto your feet. Eileen had stayed in the room with you while Dean went to pull the impala around to the exit you’d be coming out of. “Must I ride in the wheelchair? I mean I think I’m capable of walking” you asked and she grimaced “Sorry Mrs Evanson it’s hospital policy” Eileen winked at you then teased “Besides you get to ride in style out” riding in style was the collection of get well soon items that had found their way to your room from your friends. The one you liked the best was the little stuffed wolves that Garth and Bess had sent by Donna. The nurses didn’t quite understand the significance of them but you’d seen even a small smile work it’s way onto Dean’s face. Over the next few days though it was only supposed to be the four of you at the bunker well plus Cas. You weren’t being anti-social but you could also only bare so much guilt at a time from not remembering certain things.
Eileen bumped your arm and when you glanced her way she signed “Stop it” “You don’t read minds” you replied and she winked “No but you I can read” you sighed and climbed into the wheelchair while Eileen grabbed the bag carrying your presents. Sam was back at the bunker apparently switching your belongings to a different room. Eileen had let it slip that he offered to do it so Dean wouldn’t have to.
“Take me away” you told the nurse who smiled “I can say you have remained in good spirits the entire time you’ve been here and that bodes quite well for your recovery” you shrugged your good shoulder as she pushed you out the door “I can wallow or deal. I always work better by gritting my teeth and doing what I gotta do regardless”
------
The sun was bright in the sky when you finally were wheeled out of the exit. When Dean saw the three of you he quickly came around to open the passenger door and moved to help you but stopped just sigh of touching you then looked at your face for the ok. When you reached for his hand his whole body seemed to relax slightly “Mrs Evanson you have a follow up for a scan in three weeks but if any new symptoms occur such as headaches, blurry vision, dizziness feel free to come in before and if any pain outside the expected occurs feel free to come back in”
“She will” Dean and Eileen answered in unison so you shot the nurse a smile “I have a lot of people looking after me. I’ll be fine”
After you were in the passenger seat the nurse waved then headed back inside. Eileen climbed in the backseat behind you and reached up to pat your shoulder reassuringly while Dean walked around to climb in the driver’s seat. “Ready to go?” he asked and you nodded “Let’s get home”
------
You vaguely remembered the internal set up of the bunker. You’d been there a time or two and even stayed the night once but as far as knowing it as well as you should considering how long you’d apparently been calling the bat cave home? You were far from it.
Eileen headed down the stairs first followed by Dean then you walking slowly down. Everything in the map room was pretty much how you remembered it including the angel sitting at the table talking to Sam who smiled when he saw the three of you “Y/N” you pulled him into a hug as best as you could “You’re a sight for sore eyes there Cas” he ducked his head and started to explain “I couldn’t exactly come to the hospital to heal you” “I understand Cas. Just saying it’s good to see you” he nodded then looked to your left arm “Can I?” “Please” you replied with an excited smile.
Cas had healed you before but it was always a bit surreal. He laid his hand palm down on your forehead and you felt the warmth spread throughout your body. You closed your eyes and felt your shoulder stitch itself back and the tender spot in your head from the fractured skull fade to a dull ache then disappeared all together.
When you opened your eyes everyone in the room was staring at you expectantly. You tried to force memories of being with Dean into your mind but they refused to come. You shook your head sadly “Healed me physically” “I’m sorry Y/N. Memory is something different than physical injuries” Cas apologized but you shook your head “No Cas. Thank you. Since the physical part is no longer an issue I can start trying to concentrate on my memory”
You didn’t miss the disappointed look in Dean’s eyes and apparently neither did Eileen because she touched your arm “Y/N why don’t I show you your room?” you smiled appreciatively at her “Sounds good. Cas are you staying?” he shook his head “No I’ve got to get back” you hugged him again “In that case be careful out there and thank you again”
------
You heard the three guys talking while you let Eileen direct you down the hall and tried to block it out. One worry at a time. She pointed to one door “That’s mine and Sam’s room” then pointed to the next door “This one is empty” the door a little further down the hall she pointed to “Um this is Dean’s room” you swallowed hard at the unadded words which were “Until a few days ago this was your room as well” and followed her down to the room right to Dean’s “This one is yours”
You walked in behind her and looked around the room. You recognized the weapons laid about as your own. That was definitely your jacket tossed across the chair in the corner. A black blanket with red swirls was folded on the foot of the bed. When you touched it she smiled “That’s your blanket you usually want. Dean’s been using it but he got me to wash it and fold it for you” you nodded feeling very much overwhelmed “Um Eileen is it ok if I say I want to be alone?” she nodded “Of course. I’ll be in the library with the boys, your phone is on the charger so if you need me cause you know hollering for me won’t work” you managed a small laugh at that and signed “Thank you” since you know had use of both hands again.
She walked out and shut the door gently behind her. You sat on the edge of the bed and looked around the room. There was a since of familiarity tugging at you being in the bunker but you weren’t sure if it was true or just the fact of your own desire to remember. After a while you started feeling tired so you laid down across the bed pulling your blanket over you. A small nap wouldn’t hurt then maybe you could wander around a bit after everyone else went to bed.
------
You weren’t sure how long you’d been asleep when you heard a small knock at your door. You sat up smoothing a hand over your head “Yeah?” then kicked yourself when you realized it could be Eileen but the door opened before you could cross over to it and it was Sam standing in your doorway instead “Dean and Eileen ran into town to grab some food and a few other things we needed. I had to convince them both I would check on you” you smiled at that then stepped back so he could come into the room.
He sat down on the chair that your jacket was draped across so you sat down on the foot of the bed right across from him “How is he?” you asked and Sam raised an eyebrow “How are you?”
You sighed “Apparently I am in a stable relationship and can’t remember past being friends. At least Cas could get the wounds on the outside healed?” he nodded then glanced around before rubbing at the back of his neck “He’s ok” “Sam” you warned so he half smiled “He’s blaming himself of course. You were on the phone with him when the wreck happened” “Christ could it get any worse?” you groaned and Sam leaned up to gently touch your leg “Yeah. You could’ve died. We can deal with this. I know we can” you nodded and laid your hand on top of his “Thanks Sam” he smiled “So do you want to check out the rest of the bunker while it’s just the two of us or go back to sleep?”
“Can I sneek a peek in Dean’s room?” he shrugged “Hell why not?” You followed him out into the hall and stopped him right as he put his hand on the door leading into Dean’s room “Are you sure I should?” He nodded “Yeah. It may help” you took a breath and followed him in. The room didn’t look that much different then the one they had moved your things into at first then on second glance the differences popped out to you.
There was your shotgun on the wall underneath Dean’s. A photo of you, him, Eileen and Sam was on the nightstand. A few albums that were clearly your taste in music was next to his radio and there were two sets of headphones instead of one. You walked over slowly and picked up the photo. The boys were sitting on Jody’s couch and from the looks of it had pulled you and Eileen down into their lap probably seconds before the photo was snapped considering you and her were both laughing. “It was the day Alex got into nursing school” Sam explained coming to stand next to you looking over your shoulder at the photo.
“We all look so happy” you whispered running your fingertips across Dean’s face. “You’ll get your memory back just give it time” he replied and you sighed then sat the photo down “I know. Let’s check out the rest of the bunker so maybe I can have my nerve enough to face Dean by the time they get back”
------
You had made your way into the library by the time Dean and Eileen came back from town. The few times you could remember coming here you’d been impressed by the extensive collection of lore this place held. You trailed your fingers along the spines of the books reading different titles. “I think you’ve read most of the books in here at least once” you heard from behind you and turned to see Dean leaned against the doorway watching you with a small smile on his face.
You sighed and said “Hopefully I’ll actually remember reading them sooner rather than later...well and other things too” the last part you added in a whisper but you saw the way his expression changed “Y/N I don’t care how long it takes I’m not going anywhere. You may not remember the last few years right now but I do, I know this is worth fighting for” “So you don’t blame yourself then?” you asked crossing your arms over your chest and saw the barest hint of a grin pulling at his lips again “Ok that look is too familiar and I’m guessing by you asking me that you’ve talked to Sam while we were gone?”
You nodded “Dean they said a drunk driver hit me. It wasn’t your fault hell if I hadn’t been on the phone with you it could've been a lot before all of you knew what had happened to me.” He nodded slowly “Not like you have always had a habit of kicking my ass if I’m too hard on myself” that made you laugh lightly “Ok that I do remember and yes someone needs to!”
He nodded back towards the kitchen “We got some food. Eileen tried to remember what your favorite was but couldn’t quite remember so we got a few different things” You smiled “I’m sure I’ll like whatever I’ve never really been picky” the two of you stood there after that staring at each other for a few heartbeats before you heard Sam call yours and Dean’s names “Guessing that’s our cue to come eat?” “Guessing so”
------
You sat next to Eileen at the table turned halfway towards her so if you said anything she wouldn’t have to turn to read your lips. Sam was sitting across from her and Dean was across from you. You always loved california rolls but now you were simply pushing them around in the little tray. “Not hungry?” Sam asked motioning to your plate. You shrugged “Guess not. Want them?” Eileen reached over before Sam could move “I’ll take them” you laughed at the look on Sam’s face “Snooze ya lose Winchester”
You glanced over at Dean’s plate to see the burger in front of him was barely touched as well “Dean you’re not gonna eat?” he shrugged “Not that hungry” you sighed and drank the last little bit of your lemonade then stood up “I think I’m gonna grab a shower and call it an early night” “If you need anything” Eileen started and you nodded then signed “I know” Dean glanced up so you smiled “Night Dean” “Night Y/N” “Night Sam” you called over your shoulder before you walked out the kitchen and heard him say “Night” as you stepped into the hall.
------
Everything felt wrong. The bed felt wrong, your clothes felt wrong. There was a gaping hole craving the memories of the last three years and there was nothing you could do. You tossed and turned most of the night until finally calling it.
You dug around and found a thicker pair of socks so you pulled them onto your feet then grabbed the black and red blanket to wrap around your shoulders before stepping out into the hallway. You weren’t sure what part of the bunker you were headed to but you hoped maybe to clear the confusion in your head. The library called to you so you let your feet carry you in that direction.
You walked aimlessly around the rows of books letting your fingers graze some of them. God there was everything from classic literature that book collectors around the world would sell their souls for all the way to books describing just how bad of an idea that would be and why. You ended up not picking a book and instead just pulled out one of the chairs at the table and sat down.
You smiled when you saw Sam and Dean’s initials carved into the tabletop. It matched where they’d carved their names in the impala back when they were kids. You traced Dean’s initials and seriously considered waking him up to talk but decided against it. Just like you needed time to adjust you were quite certain he needed some time too. One moment he’d been with a woman for three years the next that woman didn’t even have a memory of a shared kiss.
You sighed and pushed away from the table. You had seen a laptop in your room hopefully it wasn’t password protected, maybe you could watch a movie or something.
Within a week and a half of being released from the hospital you were going absolutely stir crazy and what was even worse you knew everyone was sitting out of cases to be there with you.
You walked out of your room after grabbing a shower and headed towards the kitchen. Sam and Eileen were normally up before Dean you’d learned so you were hoping it was just the two of them again. When you walked around the corner you nearly froze in your tracks to see Dean pouring a cup of coffee. He cut his eyes up and almost smiled when he saw you then motioned with the coffee in his hand “Want a cup?” You mentally kicked yourself as a reminder to speak and forced a small smile onto your face “Please”
He nodded and turned to grab another cup. You stood there not missing the looks Sam and Eileen were sharing while Dean poured the coffee and held the cup out to you. You took it from him letting your fingers barely touch his hand “Thanks Dean” “Sugar’s on the counter and creamer’s in the fridge” he replied with a tight smile then walked over to sit next to Sam.
You couldn’t help but over the conversation between the three of them which consisted of the fact that Donna apparently needed help and that Garth had asked Sam if him and Dean could check in on some strange occurrences. “Why don’t you all go?” you asked turning to face the three of them and repeating yourself in asl for Eileen. “We don’t want to leave you alone” you nodded slowly then said “I have a cell phone. Sam just gave me a new one all set up yesterday. Not to mention I’m in literally one of the safest places on earth. I think I can manage for a day or two. Seriously I feel horrible that I’m keeping all three of you cooped up, go I’ll be fine”
The three of them knew you well enough to know that if you had your mind set on something you were far too stubborn to let it go that easily. Sam and Eileen shared a few hushed words followed by Sam and Dean having a whispering match before Dean finally sighed loudly “Fine! I’ll meet you outside in twenty”
You watched him walk out then glanced at Sam questioningly “What was that about?” “He still doesn’t feel comfortable leaving you but he agreed to go check out Garth’s lead” Eileen looked up from her phone with a grin “I texted Donna that I’ll come help her and she said to tell you and I quote can’t wait till Y/N is back in action. I miss her face” you laughed lightly and said “Well be careful and tell Donna I miss her face too”
------
Sam and Eileen left to go grab what they needed so you wandered back towards your room but stopped when you saw Dean’s bedroom door was open. You knocked lightly on it and half a second later he stepped around it and stopped in his tracks when he realized it was in fact you and not Sam or Eileen. “Y/N..something wrong?” you shook your head “No I was just wondering if maybe I could talk to you just for a second?”
He stepped to the side and waved a hand into the room “Of course” you walked in and sat in one of the chairs at the small table in his room so he sat across from you. You took a deep breath before saying “Dean..if my memory doesn’t come back” “It will” he cut you off and you couldn’t help but smile at just how certain he sounded “Please let me talk” “Sorry go ahead”
You reached across the table and grabbed his hand. He stared down at your intertwined fingers as you started to speak again “If my memory doesn’t come back and you want to move on there’s no hard feelings” his eyes flew up to yours “Sweetheart I knew you’d hit your head hard but damn I didn’t realize it’d done you that bad” “What?” you asked with a shocked laugh.
He slowly raised your joined hands up to his mouth before just barely letting his lips brush across your knuckles “Y/N listen to me good here darling....I love you more than I ever dreamt possible. A future for me? Naw I never really thought about it before you but since the moment you first told me you love me I feel like maybe one day I can actually be the man worthy of you. I’m never walking away from you. If it takes two months or twenty years, I’ll still be right here” you had tears in your eyes by the time he’d finished talking “Christ no wonder I’m in love with you. Who would’ve thought Dean Winchester is a romantic at heart” he chuckled before saying “Only for you sweetheart..only for you”
You pulled your hand from his and saw his face fall slightly before you said “Come home in one piece?” “Nothing could keep me from you” he replied and you had a sense of almost dejavu as if that was something that was said a lot between the two of you but you didn’t want to ask and get his hopes up just for dejavu.
“Dean..you ready to go?” Sam called from the hall but stopped when he saw the two of you sitting across from each other “Or we can wait. A few minutes wont hurt” you held Dean’s eyes as you said “No Sam, you two need to get going. I’m gonna go see Eileen off” you stood to walk out but stopped to pat Sam’s shoulder “I expect you both back here just the way you’re leaving”
“Bye Dean” “Bye Y/N” you smiled at Sam then headed to tell Eileen your usual parting and wish her a safe hunt.
------
Everyone was due back to the bunker within a few hours so you were currently folding laundry in your room. Things were starting to hold a sense of familiarity to them but you weren’t certain if it was true or if you were simply wanting to remember so badly you were tricking your own brain into saying it remembered when it truly didn’t.
You’d started texting with Jody, Alex and Claire. You felt horrible that you didn’t remember Claire’s girlfriend Kaia or the newest addition to the wayward daughters as you called them Patience but the girls were more than understanding and were wading in little by little to catch you up on any and all memories involving them.
Your phone chimed from where it sat next to the bed so you walked over to pick it up and saw a text from Sam which read “We’re two hours away and Eileen is an hour out” you smiled knowing everyone was safe and texted back “Make it back in one piece and then I’ll be happy” then sat the phone down and returned to putting your laundry away.
You pulled out one drawer and stopped. Your socks and undergarments were in it but you had a flash of t-shirts being in the top drawer. Must have simply been mistaken. You finished up then headed into the library where you’d been scrolling through news websites to catch up.
------
You must have been invested in the article you were currently reading because when Eileen tapped on your shoulder you jumped. When you looked up she said “You’re a hunter and I scared you!” “You didn’t make any noise! Besides my guard is down in here” she shook her head but laughed “Nice to see you in a good mood” you motioned around “It’s starting to feel like a sense of being at home here” you knew you could confide in her without it reaching Dean and possibly getting his hopes up for nothing.
Her smile grew as she pulled out the chair next to you and sat down “That’s really good news” you and her sat there talking for the next while and were still talking when you heard the bunker door open so you signed “Our boys are home” she smiled and glanced over her shoulder about the time Sam and Dean walked down the stairs but both of your faces fell when you saw the cuts and scratches littering both of their faces.
She was on her feet to Sam’s side and without hesitation you were at Dean’s side before you could even think about it. “What the hell happened?” you asked gently touching the deepest cut that ran right across Dean’s left cheek “Couple witches hexed a couple vamps. Made them a little harder to kill. No big deal sweetheart” he replied flinching slightly as you turned his head to look at the different cuts and you shook your head then glanced at Eileen “You got your idiot cause I’m gonna go patch this one up and call Cas to see when he came come through the heal them” she nodded so you grabbed Dean’s hand and pulled him behind you out of the library and down the hall to his bedroom.
------
Dean sat on the side of his bed while you fussed over the cuts on his face and neck. “Did you kill the witches? Because if not I’m gonna find them and shove their damn broomsticks up their asses” you finished cleaning the cuts and stopped when you realized he was staring at you
“What?” he shook his head letting just the barest hint of a smile play on his lips “I love when you’re all fiery” when you dipped your head just enough that hair fell in front of your face he knew that was one of your tells that you’d gotten embarrassed so he reached up to push the hair back gently and felt his heart flip when you actually leaned into his touch “I love everything about you Y/N. I don’t mean to embarrass you or make you feel weird about it since you can’t remember but you patching me up and fussing about me being hurt? It feels normal or normal for us anyways” you covered his hand with your own and smiled “I want us back Dean”
“We’ll get there sweetheart. Rowena said a few more days and a few more continents she should have her hands on everything she needs” you nodded then pulled away from him slowly “I need to put this first aid kit up” he watched you move around and wanted to say something that would make you feel better but really didn’t have an idea as to what to say.
You stopped at the doorway and glanced back at him “Is it weird if I ask you to take me for a ride in the impala?” he shook his head “Not at all. When do you want to go?” your smile pulled one to his own face “Let me grab my jacket” you glanced at his dresser for a second then added “Are your t-shirts in the top drawer?” he looked between you and the dresser then nodded slowly “Yeah..why?” “No reason” you replied then went in search of your jacket and to return the first aid kit to the kitchen.
------
You weren’t sure where Dean was headed but sitting next to him watching him drive felt so natural. You’d known him for years but it was like your heart was remembering even when your brain was refusing to. “Want to pull over or just keep driving? It’s a quarter moon but it’s pretty bright out if you want to park and talk?” he suggested and you nodded “Please”
You watched as he found a pull off and drove back to an open field. When he killed the engine he cut his eyes at you “You coming?” you smiled and climbed out behind him. He walked to the front of the car then sat on the hood leaned back against the windshield so you sat next to him making sure your boots were hanging off the side to not scratch the paint. Thousands of stars were dotted across the sky and although the moon was only a quarter it was bright. You could hear a few crickets far off and a slight breeze was in the air not enough to make it cold but enough to make your jacket comfortable.
You cut your eyes at him twice before he said “You can lean your head over on me Y/N. I won’t bite” “What if I asked you to?” you joked but had another sense of dejavu hit you. He pulled you over onto his chest leaning further back while you got comfortable “You know you said that to me the first night we slept together” he spoke after a moment.
It was the first time he’d actually talked about your relationship. You knew it was because he didn’t want to push your memory. You had your head laying against his chest and could hear his heart beating steadily under you. “Who kissed who first?” you asked and his answering laugh vibrated through your entire body “Believe it or not you kissed me first” you turned to look at him and he shrugged so you asked “Tell me?”
He nodded and leaned his head back to stare at the night sky “We were fresh off a possession case. Me and Sam had been working it and you rolled through nearby. Eileen was with the twins working a case so you offered to help us. After it was all said and done Sam headed back to the hotel but me and you decided to grab a beer” you hadn’t realized just how much you were hanging onto his every word until he grinned “You’re staring there Y/N” “Oh hush. You’re telling me about our first kiss I get to stare”
“Fair enough” he replied with a nod then continued “Anyways. We got to the bar, grabbed our drinks and then headed to a corner table. We were talking about the job, the life we live. You were the most beautiful woman in the place and you were sitting there in jeans and one of my flannels since your shirt had gotten torn during the fight and you had a scratch right across the top of your collarbone that flashed when you moved just the right way. I’d been trying to figure out a way to ask you if you’d ever consider being with another hunter for weeks by that point. You got up to grab us another round and I admit I watched your ass while you walked to the bar but you hadn’t even gotten the beer yet when some drunk asshole decided to grab your ass”
“How did that go over?” you asked pretty much already knowing the answer. Dean tilted his head with a hint of a smirk “I may have broken his jaw in a few different places. Luckily the bartender saw everything so she snuck us over the bar and out the back about the time the police were coming in the front. We hightailed it out of there and headed back to the hotel. I walked you to your door even though you were right next to us. You told me you could’ve handled it and at first I thought you were pissed at me for stepping in but then you added that you thought it was the sexiest thing you’d ever seen. You kissed me then asked if I wanted to grab coffee the next morning before we all headed our different directions”
The happiness in Dean’s eyes as he spoke about the two of you made your heart ache. You loved him, that much you were sure of even if you couldn’t remember the details as to why. “Was it just me for you from there on?” you asked and when he looked at you god your heart skipped more than a few beats at the emotion those green eyes held “No one else would’ve stood a chance” you leaned closer to him and just barely let your lips brush against his in a tentative kiss. When he didn’t push you away you deepened it moving closer to him. He groaned into the kiss when your hands slid across his chest coming up to play with the hair at the nape of his neck.
One of his hands came to grip your thigh closest to him and he gave it a tug pulling you on top of him never breaking the kiss. You straddled his waist breaking from his lips to kiss down his neck. The grip on your hips tightened when you kissed on top of his pulse point “Y/N...sweetheart..baby stop” you froze the moment he said stop and looked at him in confusion “What’s wrong?” he swallowed hard before saying “Don’t get me wrong because fuck I’ve missed kissing you but we can’t do this. Not until you get more of your memory back. The moment you do I promise to keep you in bed for days but for now we can’t”
You nodded and left another quick kiss on his lips before sliding off of him and the hood of the car. He stood up after you and wrapped both arms around you “I love you Y/N” you nodded leaning back against him “I know Dean” the two of you stood there in silence for the longest just enjoying being close to each other until you shivered. “Let’s get back” he said so you nodded with a sigh “Will you watch a movie or something with me when we get back?” he nodded and kissed your cheek “Of course”
You paced across the floor glancing towards the table in the center of the room every now and then. The redhead working over the large silver bowl stopped in the middle of a movement “Y/N..dear I have grown quite fond of you actually but if you don’t stop that incessant pacing I will lock you out until I need you”
You held your hands up defensively “Sorry Rowena. I guess I’m just nervous” “Understandably but just take a breath” you nodded and sat down at the table across the room. She smiled then went back to her work. You looked up when the door opened and gave a small smile to Eileen “The boys are on their way back” “It’ll be done before they get here” Rowena said not looking up so you repeated it to Eileen who questioned why your eyes got wider.
Eileen sat down next to you and drew you into a conversation about a few hunt years back and that managed to keep your attention until Rowena cleared her throat. The both of you looked up so she waved you over “It’s time” Eileen walked next to you so you gave her hand a small squeeze before stepping over to the table “Give me your hand” Rowena spoke so you held your hand out palm up. She picked up a silver dagger and slid it across your skin. You watched as your blood dripped onto the mixture in the bowl and it glowed a deep silver.
Rowena spoke the incantation of which you only caught half the words because while some was latin the rest was a language you didn’t recognize. After a moment the silver turned to a shimmering black. Rowena dipped a red wine glass into the bowl and held it out “Drink it all” you looked at the liquid and swallowed hard. You’d drank worse before. You looked at Eileen who nodded so you toasted her and Rowena “Here’s to our health ladies” then tipped the entire glass back in one go. “How do you feel?” Eileen asked and you started to say you felt fine then the world took on a fuzzy haze and you felt yourself falling right before your vision went black.
------
“Y/N..wake up..sweetheart” you could hear Dean’s voice and forced your eyes open. “She’s awake” he breathed in relief. You were laying on a makeshift pallet in the armory. “Told you I know what I’m doing” Rowena chastised then crouched down into your view. “Y/N..how do you feel dear?” you looked at Dean before answering Rowena “I feel amazing. I remember everything” you could hear Eileen and Sam both thanking Rowena but your eyes were glued to Dean who whispered “I love you Y/N” you pulled him down into a kiss before whispering “I love you too Dean. Nothing could keep me from you either”

_________________
It had been going on for a bit less than a month. The back and forth of pranks between each and every male member of the Bad Batch, passing from moving around one's equipment up to tripping others or painting insults on an inattentive brother's backplate.
No one ever admitted they did the prank and you often took the blame despite never participating when you couldn't contain your laughter and no one was able to back you up on your whereabouts of the day. It wasn't a bother to be the scapegoat for whoever really pulled the pranks- your best bet was on Wrecker, although some tricks had more of a Tech vibe, like the time Crosshair's modulator had such a high pitched tone that the civilians mistook him for a female- the pranks were overall pretty entertaining. When they weren't targeted at you, that is.
You could have murdered the one who put Knytixes under your bedsheets. Thank the gods, you avoided jumping right onto the 6 crawling insects due to the light illuminating the barracks since you were the first one who headed to bed, although it didn't stop your hand from squashing one under your palm in inadvertence. The nearly empty room filled with clones in record time as your surprised scream resonated through the closed door and bounced between the ship's walls. Since no one took its responsibilities, you threatened everyone's masculinity and claimed a spot in Hunter's cot while Tech used jars to take away the remaining insects that Back-Up hadn't had time to eat.
The intensity of the pranks dropped in the following days and none were meant for you, leading you to believe that the Batcher who hid the disgusting critters in your bed understood that he went too far or was too scared for his balls.
Hunter was resting after a tiring morning of paperwork, Tech was fumbling on his datapad with this concentrated gaze that only he could have while reading endless oceans of information on whatever was his interest at the moment, Back-Up was lounging on his shoulder to absorb the warmth radiating from his blacks and Wrecker cheered you up as you competed against Crosshair on who could reach the top of the tree the fastest.
"This needs to stop!" Hunter had barged out of the Marauder in a yell, quickly breaking your concentration 10 meters above the ground and only 2 away from your objective.
The quick glance you allowed yourself to throw his way was a bad choice. The shock of seeing the right side of his face blackened out to mirror the tattoo on his left side caused you to grab the wrong tree limb, a smaller one that couldn't possibly sustain your weight and would have sent you flying down if only your right hand wasn't firmly wrapped around a thicker branch.
Crosshair won the competition and you were dangling in the air by one hand, huffing in defeat. You knew he'd wear a victorious smirk for the remaining hours of the day, you had annoyed him so much about being a better climber in the hope to have a short playful time with him. It was frustrating to know that you were winning right before Hunter came in the picture and broke your focus.
You may be a better climber, but Crosshair definitely was better at staying focussed on his task and ignoring each and every distraction.
"Oh that's a good one!" Wrecker's laugh sent him knocking against the tree, the resulting vibrations threatening the reliability of your grip. If only you were wearing your fingerless gloves, the bark of the tree wouldn't bite your skin as much and you wouldn't be tempted to let go. "Don't know who thought of that but this is the best idea of the month!"
"It wasn't me." Tech immediately added to dissipate any suspicions, not even bothering to look up from his datapad while doing so.
"Not me either!" You shouted while reaching for the branch with your opposite hand and pulled yourself up to sit and give a break to the sensitive skin of your palms. "And I was with Cross the whole day." A grunt of approval resonated behind you, even though it was completely unnecessary and clearly didn't reach Hunter. Or maybe it did.
The sniper took a seat next to you, one hand keeping his balance with a branch in its grip while the other kept you close by your waist.
Once again, no one took its blame. You wondered if you should laugh about it or not. The guys- because it really never participated in these shenanigans and you were certain it wasn't Back-Up either- always managed to never leave clues and never get caught in the act and you were deeply admiring their skills. They weren't top commandos for nothing!
"No. More." Was Hunter pissed? No. He was fuming. "Or next time we're on base I'll register everyone for a thorough medical exam."
Oh the ultimate punishment was out. The prank war ultimately reached its end on a fine sunny afternoon as there was no way it could compete against a complete medical exam, the displeasure that came with the variety of tests surpassed by far the good laugh of pranking someone, and thus, you knew no trooper in this team would dare pull another trick.
"C'mon Sarge. Not that."Wrecker was the first to complain about the consequences, quickly followed by Tech who stated that all your physical health were optimum.
"Yes that, and I don't care if we're all at our top. The smallest of trick on anyone of this team will get all your asses in the medbay." He finished in a do not test me tone and returned inside the ship to scrub the ink off his face.
The muscles pressed against your side were now rock hard, same as the grip slowly tightening around your waist.
"Don't worry." A peck on his cheek was enough to take his mind off the needles and noisy machines. "No one will dare pull one if that's where it'll get us." The creases between his scrunched eyebrows relaxed with a small nod, knowing just like you that his brothers would not play with that fire.
You would all be fine.
______
"I'll kill the one who pulled this one." You fumed in the examination room, knee bouncing under your hand as you waited for the doctor to come back and dismiss you.
The wait allowed you to think of a plan to finally know who was pulling those jokes and make them regret it. Multiple ideas grew in your mind, one for each member. The planning got interrupted momentarily by the clone who entered your room to inform you that you were in perfect health. Your tests were flawless just like your bloodwork and he couldn't see why your CO requested such a rigorous examination.
"Someone pissed in his cereal." You jumped off the table and shrugged at the bewildered look on the man's face before taking off in the direction of the hangar.
It wasn't nearly as drastic as someone peeing in a bowl, but it certainly was just as insulting.
That last one was personal to the team and you couldn't get how a member of the Batch could do this. It just didn't make sense. Them who constantly fought against the snide remarks, disdainful gazes and harsh behavior, could not possibly have degraded themselves like that.
You quickly boarded the ship after successfully ignoring all the regs watching you speed walking to your destination. Hunter was there with the rest of the boys, watching the insignia over the door like the name of the culprit was written somewhere in it.
You pushed the button to close the railing and keep this event private, before joining the silent half-circle of irritated men glaring at the paint tainting the wall and every so often glaring at the others in the room like they were the ones who did it. Well, one of them did. No one wanted to admit it.
Clone Force 69 was painted in thick black letters right over the door for everyone inside to see. At least, the rest of the base didn't know.
Who the hell would write that? That's what you expected from the regs, not from your own team.
"Hope y'all appreciated the trip in the sterile field." The grumble on your right opened the door for a concert of groans. "Now the person who did this better say it now."
"But I told you it couldn't be any of us!" Arms open wide at his sides, Tech repeated exactly what he did before Hunter contacted the medbay to order four medical exams. "We all went to bed at the same time and all exited the barracks together. No one got up during the night!"
You could testify for yourself and Hunter for that. Really, it was unfair that you had to endure the exam, but then it would have been unfair for the other Batchers. At least this time you weren't a suspect.
"Apparently someone did because it did not write itself."
"Even the calligraphy doesn't match anyone's!" He pointed out and proceeded to tell how the curves and spacing didn’t correspond to either himself, Wrecker, or Crosshair.
You perked up at the new information. The calligraphy. It did not match any of the Batcher? But it was so familiar. How could you know these harsh cursive letters if it wasn't the clones'? You never saw anyone else's writing as they all used datapads around here.
Clone Force 69. Why- it sounded familiar too. Something at the back of your mind bugged you. You knew that. 69. You used to laugh at these references all the time with him. Somehow, when you read it, it was his voice that rang out in your head.
"Guys." The word nearly didn't pass your mouth as the usual tightness in your throat manifested itself like every time you thought about him. "That's Kayden's style. It's his writing too."
"Took you all long enough! Miss me motherfuckers?" The sight of the very same blue-eyed brunette who disappeared into your arms more than a year and a half ago, magically appearing out of thin air in the center of the room, arms open wide at his side like he was a big surprise froze every thought in your brain.
Your breathing slowed down while your heart rate perked up, the thudding resonating all the way up your brain to rhythmically ram against the bone and raise the pressure in there.
"Kayden?" Wrecker stood at the appearance of the newcomer, or ghost, or whatever he was.
"What did you expect? Ya can't get rid of me that easily." He winked, not even meeting your gaze yet.
"Wh-You guys seeing him too?!" They all nodded in silence, too stunned to manage anything more. Hunter's hand on your thigh that you hadn't noticed until now tightened at your inquiry.
He looked the same. Same Forsian clothes, same tousled hair with his persistent cowlick at the front, same sparkling energy, although your expert eyes saw through the facade as easily as ever and found some uneasiness. "How- your soul got- you died."
It took you a month to overcome your denial and finally be able to say that he died and was not simply missing. He didn't just disappear, his soul disappeared. His soul got eaten by a pesky little brat. He had died back there, nearly half an hour before dawn. He died in your arms that night and every following night for three weeks and he couldn't be here. As much as you wanted him to be, he couldn't.
"Yeah. I'd like to think that it was because whoever was assigned to me on the other side couldn't stand me, but I truly think it's because of your sad ass crying over our crest with the Core around." He shrugged when his eyes finally met yours. "And by the way, you're ugly as fuck when you cry." His diversion to hide his discomfort failed miserably. You saw him gulp as he took in the water filling your eyes.
"I mourned you, you asshole!" The hand on your thigh wasn't enough to keep you in place. Getting up without a problem, you moved to your once closest friend and the one you considered your brother and punched his shoulder with all your might. You were pissed, but not enough to aim for his face.
The lack of any concrete object colliding with your knuckles sent you tumbling through his body. It gave you a chill like you'd passed your hand through a mound of snow. The coldness vanished as soon as you completely exited his apparition, leaving goosebumps as the only proof of the momentaneous change of temperature.
"Neat trick eh? Took me months to master it!" He beamed, truly enthusiastic about his new ability. His smile wavered once he took in your fury. "Okay, okay. Hit me again, I won't do it." He presented his cheek.
You weren't falling for it again. Your ego was bruised, your feelings were crushed, your whole being was screaming in a mix of anger and relief.
"Fuck you." He recoiled at your glare. "You were here the whole time, watching me cry over your fuck ass self and didn't say shit." This time, when your fingers poked his chest, they made contact and you noticed how warm he felt compared to the cold from mere moments ago when you passed through him.
"I wasn't here the whole time." He shook his head to defend himself. "I woke up one day, I think it was a month after it all, and no one could see or hear me. Took me months to build up my strength to be able to move one of the toothpicks that are everywhere in this ship."
A growl could be heard from behind Kayden who immediately changed something in himself so the toothpick thrown at him passed right through and bounced on your shirt. A click of his tongue and Crosshair was gone, preferring the comfort of his bed after a long visit to the medbay to listening to what the brunette had to say.
"Wait! So all the pranks, it was you?" Wrecker approached the Forsian, an impressed glint in his eyes. He reached for Kayden's shoulder, surely to try out the feeling of touching a ghost that can actually dematerialize himself. Unfortunately for him, Kayden was now flesh and bones… or whatever he was.
"Needed to come back with style, my friend." He smirked and turned to admire his art tagging the wall. "That's a better team name, ain't it?"
You used the fact that he was now a solid version of himself to slap the back of his head. It was with a small bit of pleasure that you noted that it felt the same. Even the yelp was exactly as you remembered.
"You karking sent us to the medbay." Crosshair shot from the room clearly still pissed from his little trip. You felt compelled to go snuggle with him, even more because you had assured him that he wouldn't have to undergo a medical appointment.
Your frustration towards your brother came back full force. Not only could he have shown himself weeks ago when the first prank started, but he dropped so much shit on all of you, from the long-lasting ink on Hunter's face, to Tech's burned hand when his live wires had been moved without him noticing, to the forced medical trip and let's not forget the bugs in your bed.
It was a good thing that the sniper wasn't in the room as he would have been mad seeing Kayden trying to keep the smile off his face and failing miserably. "I didn't send you there. He did." He pointed at the Sergeant with a smug grin. "I was just being a nice little ghost."
"Nice? You call yourself nice?" You couldn't take more of his bullshit. If you stayed in the room another second, you'd lash out and it wouldn't be pretty. All the nasty words floating in your mind would hurt more than you really intended and you couldn't have that. Not when you could still hear the repressed sobs racking his body in your head.
You walked away, tears gathering in your eyes, but you didn't care. Crosshair would hold you again and it'd be fine again. "Fucking Dimwit."
"Thank you." He called with such seriousness that you stopped in your tracks. "For bringing me back."
At that moment, water ran down your cheek and there was nothing you could do about it. You wanted to hold him tightly in your arms and pray that he wouldn't fade away this time. But you were scared. Scared he'd do just that. Fade away and leave you once again to try and piece yourself back again, with more missing pieces than you already have.
You were lucky though. Clone force 99 was good at creating stuff with limited resources to accomplish impossible tasks. With their skills, time, patience, and different level of care, they filled some holes. However, some were still painfully empty and were too intricate to replace.
"Don't thank me." You sighed, shoulder slumped, hand hovering over the button to open the door to the barracks.
He frowned. "You can't really be mad at me."
No, you couldn't. Not when he was back. And even less when he died for you in the first place.
You shook your head, still watching the marks engraved in the door. "I'm not."
"Then wh-" "Him." You cut Kayden off to point at Tech whose eyes were as wide as saucers and his body inching closer and closer to get a better look at him.
"Stay away." Kayden jumped to the side, avoiding the engineer’s curious fingers as well as his scanner that somehow found its way into his possession.
Still, the clone didn't give up and followed the Forsian wherever he backed-up. "But you can pass through things!" His first try at passing through Kayden was unsuccessful as he met flesh, just like Wrecker.
"No. I'm not going to be penetrated by your fingers for science. It still feels weird."
Tech, however, was quick to find a way to get what he wanted. A fist flew to Kayden's face, not too quick to let him time to see it coming, but with enough force to promise a black-eye if he didn't dodge it. If only there had been a wall behind him to stop him from jumping back and avoid the knuckles.
"But do you get how useful this could be during a mission!" Tech tried again, but Kayden was prepared.
"Yeah and ghosts can go poof!" He mimed explosions with his hands and disappeared into thin air just as Tech's fist was to make contact. Instead of hitting Kayden, his fist collided with the wall of the Marauder.
You entered the barracks, Tech's hiss of pain filled the room and caused Crosshair to chuckle in amusement.
"So we have a ghost now? Can we keep him like we kept Back-Up?" Wrecker asked excitedly.
"Great. Just. Great." Hunter grumbled, a hand slowly moving down his face and the door closed behind you.

Arsonist’s Lullaby
Part One: Kiss With A Fist
Part Two: Only Angel
Bucky and his Angel’s relationship grow closer.
Word Count: 6.8K
CW: violence, Bucky and his nightmares, John Walker being an ass, a little bit of fluff, smut, brief shower sex, Bucky steps on the reader with his boots, spitting, choking, spanking, Bucky using his metal arm, crying, FATWS ep. 3&4 spoilers
The cold air of the cargo container was strange, given that they were in a southeast Asian island. It sent a chill down Angel’s spine. Like something would go very wrong. They survey the empty space, searching for Nagel.
Sharon was certain Nagel was here, but there was no sight of him.
But Angel could hear the slight vibrations of music coming from… somewhere.
She approaches the back of the container and feels around the rough metal wall.
“Hey, I think he may be in here.” She beckons them over.
Pressing a gloved hand onto the metal, she pushed, revealing a small laboratory in front of them.
“You three go ahead.” She mutters. “I’ll keep an eye out with Sharon.”
Before they can say anything, she strides out of the container.
“You don’t need to worry about them.” Sharon crosses her arms as the door closes. “I know them well. They can hold their own.”
“Oh, I know.” Angel chuckles.
“Bucky likes to call you Angel, huh. Seems like you two bonded pretty quickly.”
She gives Sharon a humored look as they stroll around the dock.
“I thought psychopaths couldn’t form bonds.”
“You know I didn’t mean it.”
Their eyes dart all over the place, looking for any oncoming bounty hunters.
“How’d you get my photo anyways?”
“Heavy analysis of CCTV footage, a few phone calls, and a lot of digging. The photo was shit quality, but it was enough for me to go off of.”
“Was it enough to catch me?”
“I guess so. Then Zemo blew up the UN so we tabled the case.”
“Interesting. Maybe that UN bombing was a blessing in disguise. Saved me a life sentence in a high-security prison.”
They turned a corner.
“You wouldn’t have gone to jail. MI6 would’ve given you a job instead.”
“Hmph. I’d rather die than be a servant.”
From the corner of her eye, Angel spots a passing black shadow.
“Guys,” she presses a finger onto her earpiece. “Someone’s here.”
A gunshot rings out from the container and the hairs on the back of her neck stand. Sharon gives her a knowing look and they turn the safety off of their guns.
“Here.” Angel whispers, handing Sharon a knife. “It’ll come in handy.”
Three bounty hunters transverse on them and they open fire, taking them down one by one.
“We don’t have much time, hurry up!” Sharon yells into the earpiece.
A bounty hunter wraps their arms around Angel and she grabs a knife, jamming it into their arm.
Adrenaline floods her system, dialing her senses up to ten. A swift roundhouse kick sends another hunter tumbling to the ground.
From behind her, she hears Sam and Bucky yelling and she runs towards them.
“It’s in every action movie!” She hears Sam yell.
If her life wasn’t on the line, she would’ve laughed.
“You okay?” She pants.
“No! We’re not!” Sam yells. “Zemo shot Nagel!”
“What? Where is he?”
Her question was answered when a container set fire and exploded. She spots Zemo standing atop another, donning a purple mask. Before she can point him out, he sprints away.
“Come on, let’s get out of here.”
Gunshots ring from her right and Bucky wraps a protective arm around her. In her peripheral she sees a bounty hunter riding towards her on a motorcycle, guns blazing. She quickly wriggles out of Bucky’s grasp and sends a knife into the tire, throwing the hunter off of the vehicle and into the fire.
“Good aim.” He says, mouth agape in surprise.
“You just threw that dude into a fire!” Sam exclaims.
“Yeah, well, he was going to kill us.”
They continue to run through the maze of crates, turning corner after corner, dodging bullet after bullet.
As much as he hates to admit it, the sight of Angel in action, when her violence wasn’t directed towards him, sends a rush through his system.
Zemo speeds towards them in a convertible, signaling them to get in. Sam jumps in the passenger seat while Bucky and Angel sit in the back.
Her pupils are blown wide and Bucky swears he can feel the electricity radiating off of her. Without stopping to calm down, he grabs her face in his hand and presses a passionate kiss on her lips.
His heart skips a beat when she kisses him back, and in the corner of his eye, he spots Sharon giving either him or Angel, a thumbs up.
…
Bucky makes it a habit to call her Angel all the time. He likes the way it slips off his tongue. He likes the way her eyes seem to glimmer when he calls her that. It’s as if the more he calls her Angel, she seems to glow more and more.
He calls her Angel when they board the jet on the way to Latvia.
He calls her Angel when she sits down to change the gauze on her thigh.
He calls her Angel when they get to the Riga safe house.
The more time he spends with her, the more he notices the little things about her. He notices how her tongue sticks out a little when she does her eye makeup.
He notices how her head would bop along to music in her earbuds
He notices how she’ll curl up on the couch, tucking her knees close to her body, while she sketches.
He notices how she’ll mutter curses in different languages. Mandarin, French, Russian, Spanish just to name a few.
He notices how she took off her jewelry when she showers with the exception of a gold chain. A gold chain with a dangling pendant. A pendant of a little angel.
He notices how she uses apple cinnamon body wash. It made her smell warm. It made her smell like home.
She gets along with Sam. Even Zemo.
She talks about philosophy with Zemo and when she converses with Sam, they talk about music.
She’s a force to be reckoned with. Fiery. Just like Selby had said. A firebird.
And despite her cool, hardened front, there was a gentleness to her.
The jet had touched down in Latvia late and night and they collectively decided to get a good night’s rest before finding Karli.
He had woken up from a nightmare. Reliving the memory of killing Yori’s son.
He didn’t know what compelled him to do it, but he padded over to Angel, reading Anna Karenina. Glasses perched on her nose, hair loose and resting past her shoulders.
She looks up at him.
“Nightmare?”
Bucky nods, tears pricking are his eyes.
She places the book on the floor and stretches out on the couch.
“Come here.” She whispers arms open wider
She let him lay his head on her chest, nose pressed against her sternum. With gentle hands, she runs her fingers through his hair, slowing his rapid heartbeat.
The serum had made his hearing sharper and from his position between her breasts, he could hear the soft thumping of her heart. It calmed him.
“Can you sing to me?” He mumbles.
The hand playing with his hair stops.
“Sing to you?” She asks.
“Mhm.”
“I-“ she pauses “I don’t really-“
“Please.” He begs.
She’s quiet, just calmly stroking his hair, then she sighs.
“What do you want me to sing?”
“Anything. Just… please, I want you to sing for me.”
She ponders for a moment before she parts her lips, voice shaky and quiet.
When I was a child, I heard voices
Some would sing and some would scream
You soon find you have few choices
I learned the voices died with me
He closes his eyes and noses at her sternum.
When I was a child, I'd sit for hours
Staring into open flame
Something in it had a power
Could barely tear my eyes away
The song is unfamiliar. He didn’t listen to music all that much anymore. And even when he listens to music, it was mostly from the 40s.
All you have is your fire
And the place you need to reach
Don't you ever tame your demons
But always keep 'em on a leash
Her voice, still soft and quiet, is haunting. The way it wraps around the lyrics, warms his heart. He breathes in the smell of her apple cinnamon body wash.
When I was 16, my senses fooled me
Thought gasoline was on my clothes
I knew that something would always rule me
I knew the scent was mine alone
He loves the way he can feel her chest move up and down. The way her voice sounds so rich with his ear pressed against her chest, the music echoing within her ribs.
All you have is your fire
And the place you need to reach
Don't you ever tame your demons
But always keep 'em on a leash
He reaches his hand to play with the angel pendant on her necklace. Finger running over the grooves.
When I was a man I thought it ended
When I knew love's perfect ache
But my peace has always depended
On all the ashes in my wake
As he drifts off to sleep, he can hear the last lines of the song lingering on her lips. The images from war. The torture he endured, the people he’s killed, the amends he has yet to make, all temporarily fade from his mind.
All you have is your fire
And the place you need to reach
Don't you ever tame your demons
But always keep 'em on a leash
And for the first time since Steve left, Bucky was able to sleep without disturbance.
…
“You have a lovely voice.”
Angel was pulled from her sleep when she hears Zemo’s voice.
She glares at him and places a finger on her lips, shushing him. Bucky was still lying on top of her, still asleep and she didn’t want to wake him.
“My apologies.” He smiles.
“Were you watching us last night?” She interrogates quietly.
“No, but I do have a keen sense of hearing. I heard you singing to James.”
She turns her head to meet his eyes.
“He had a nightmare. It was the least I could do for him.”
“Understandable.” He nods. “My son used to have nightmares and my wife’s voice was the only thing that could put him to sleep.”
“I’m sorry.” She mumbles sympathetically. “About your family, I mean. I know you lost them a while ago.”
Her hand combs through Bucky’s hair.
“I understand how vengeance and anger overtook you. You needed your revenge. But don’t hurt him.”
“Hurt who? James?”
“Yes.” Her voice darkens. “If you lay a finger on him, I won’t hesitate to bury you.”
Zemo sighs.
“I have no intention of harming him. I see the way you look at him. It’s the same look I used to give my wife. You care for him dearly and given your line of work, I know you’d do anything to avenge the people who harm the ones you love.” He walks towards her and offers her a cookie. Angel takes it with a wary hand.
“You’ve got anything else you want to say?”
“I do have a question about that song. I knew that something would always rule me.” He quotes. “Was that about yourself, or James?”
She narrows her eyes.
“It was just a song.”
“Yet it implies that something will always have power, control, over the songwriter.” He tilts his head.
“What are you implying, Baron?”
“It’s not an implication. It’s an observation. You two share a common trait. For James, it’s his past. His time as the Winter Soldier looms over him. As for you, you seem to have this, how do I say it, a compulsion to kill. It will always stick to you.”
“Baron, I suggest you pick your next words very carefully.”
Bucky stirs and she lifts her hand from his head.
“Mmm. Good morning.” He mumbles, voice rough and heavy.
“Good morning to you too sleepyhead.” She coos, rubbing his cheek with her thumb. “Did you sleep well?”
“Mhm.” He hums.
She gives Zemo a look that says ‘get out.’
Zemo gives her a smirk and walks away, leaving the two of them alone.
Bucky opens his eyes and Angel can feel her heart melt. He balances himself on his arm to press a kiss to her nose.
“You look cute with bed head.” He chuckles. “So pretty. I could just eat you up.”
“You look quite pretty when you sleep.” She giggles and rubs her nose against his.
He places his head back on her chest and they lie there for a while, listening to the sounds of the city.
Finally, she sighs.
“Alright, Bucky, I’m gonna go take a shower.”
He whines and wraps his arms around her.
“No, stay.”
“Bucky,” she says sternly, “I have to wash my hair, let go.”
With a huff, he sits up and lets her get off of the couch. As she stands she turns around spotting Bucky, arms crossed and a pout on his face.
“I never said you couldn’t join.”
Bucky jumps up and runs to her. He places his hands on her waist and turns her around, pressing a kiss to her lips. She links her fingers with his and he follows behind her towards the bathroom.
While they wait for the water to heat up, she reaches into her bag to pull out bottles of product.
He spots the shimmering bottle of apple cinnamon body wash and smiles.
“Apple cinnamon body wash.” He notes.
“Mhm. It's inexpensive but it smells nice.”
“It does.”
She places her hand under the stream of water and gets a feel for the temperature. The water is hot, just how she likes it. Her hands pull the t-shirt over her head and then her cotton underwear.
Bucky waits for her to step into the shower before he strips down and joins her.
A content smile crosses her face when the hot water hits her body but her peace is broken when she hears Bucky yelp.
“Why is the water so hot?”
“I like it hot.” She turns to face him and playfully pokes at his navel. “It’s relaxing.”
“You’re going to boil me alive.” He grumbles.
“If you don’t like the hot water,” She bluntly states, “then get out.”
She shampoos her hair, letting the bubbles froth around her fingers, and then she pours a bit into her hand and reaches up to massage it into Bucky’s hair.
He runs a metal finger down her sternum, collecting a bit of the bubbles that run down her body. When his finger reaches her scar, his touch lingers.
Seeing the guilt in his eyes, Angel places a finger underneath his chin and has him look into her eyes instead.
“Don’t.” She murmurs. “You’ll only torture yourself reminiscing on the past.” She pulls him under the stream, letting the water wash away the shampoo in their hair.
She’s got a meticulous shower routine, one that she likes to perform herself, yet she’s okay with Bucky standing next to her. When she combs the conditioner through her hair, she does the same for Bucky, knowing it would soften his hair even more and make it smell like vanilla and pomegranate.
She places a bit of the apple cinnamon body wash in her hands and rubs it onto his body. Her hands pay extra attention to the scar on his shoulder.
“It’s got vitamin E in it. Helps with scars.”
Bucky turns her around, making her face away from him.
She can’t see exactly what he’s doing, but she hums with relaxation when she feels his strong hands rub the body wash into her skin.
“You’ve got some knots in your shoulders.” He notes.
“I’m aware of that.”
“You’re stressed.”
“I am.”
When the water washes away the body wash, the shower is filled with the scent of apple cinnamon.
She’s surprised when she feels a kiss on the back of her shoulder but nevertheless, she enjoys it.
Bucky presses another kiss in the center of her shoulders and kisses her along the line of her back. He sinks to his knees and places a kiss onto the dimples of her back.
“Buck, what are you doing?” She smirks, turning around.
“I just wanna love on you.” He murmurs against her skin. “Can I?”
She blinks owlishly, then slowly nods her head.
“Y-yeah” she breathes.
Bucky places a kiss on her scar and runs his tongue over it, sending a fire through her.
“Open your legs for me, doll.”
She shyly parts her legs and Bucky smiles up at her.
He grabs her waist, hoisting her knees over his shoulders, pressing her back against the wall.
She lets out gaspy whines when he kisses and nips at her thighs, letting his stubble rub against the sensitive skin.
“Bucky,” she whimpers “we- we’re going to waste water.”
“Don’t worry about that, doll.” He murmurs. “Just let me make you feel good.”
He licks a stripe up her folds, causing her to gasp. She grabs onto his hair, pulling him closer.
“So sweet, baby. You taste so sweet.”
She doesn’t reply. She couldn’t. Not when he was making her feel so good.
She slaps her other hand onto the wall, trying to hold herself up. Bucky tightens his grip on her and leans in closer, continuously licking into her, making her head spin.
She tries to say something, tell him she’s close, tell him she’s going to cum quicker than she thought, but the only sounds that leave her mouth are breathy moans.
When he pulls away, she whines. He gives her a cocky grin.
“Wanna cum?”
She vigorously nods her head.
“That’s a shame.” He lets go of her legs, almost dropping her onto the tile, and wraps an arm around her waist to keep her steady. “We’ve got a big day ahead.” His tone is teasing, almost mean. “I’ll let you cum later.”
She’s left on the edge, and she’s angry. No, not angry. Frustrated. Frustrated and desperate.
“You’re mean.” She grumbles, shutting off the water.
“If you give me attitude, I won’t let you cum at all.” He chuckles.
She pushes him away and wraps a towel around her body.
“I don’t need you to cum anyways.” She grumbles under her breath.
As she walks away, he grabs her by the back of her neck and pulls her into his chest.
“If I were you,” He lowers his lips to her ear, “I’d behave. Now,” he releases his grip and gives her ass a smack. “Get dressed, we’ve got a lot to do today.”
She digs through her duffel to find a simple red jumpsuit. The neckline is low enough to be teasing, but it had enough support and pockets to be practical.
“Sounds like someone had a good morning.”
She turns around, a big grin stretching across her face when she sees Sam.
“Sam! Good morning!” She cheers.
“No need to good morning me when I woke up to the sound of fucking.” he grumbles, annoyance in his voice.
She chuckles as she buttons the front of her jumpsuit.
“So, Bucky tells me we have a lot going on today. What’s on the itinerary?”
“Hopefully, we can track down Karli and convince her to stop. At least that’s my plan.”
“Sounds good.”
He grabs his jacket from the chair. “I’m headed out to get something to eat. Do you want anything?”
“I’m okay.” She smiles at him. “Thanks for asking.”
Sam reaches the door and turns around.
“One more thing, you’ve got a great voice.”
“Was I that loud or did no one sleep at all last night?”
Sam chuckles.
“I think after the past few days, it’s hard for anyone to get a good night's sleep.” He looks down, fiddling with his fingers. “What you did… what you did for Bucky in Madripoor, when we were undercover…”
“What did I do?” She asks curiously.
“When Zemo had him go all Winter Soldier, you fought alongside him, you got to that first guy before Bucky did.”
Angel is quiet. She says nothing, looking down at her hands and picking at her cuticles.
“He might not say this to your face, but I’ve been around him long enough to know that he’s thankful. And so am I.”
She doesn’t know what to say. What would she even say?
“I can see now why he likes calling you Angel.”
With that, the door closes.
She walks over to the kitchen, looking through the cabinets. The shelves were fairly empty, mostly just tins of cookies and candy, and a box of cherry blossom tea. She huffs in frustration when her fingers brush over the tin of candy, barely moving it.
“Need some help, doll?”
Bucky grabs the tin and places it on the counter.
Her frustration is reignited at the sight of him in a tight, black t-shirt. She wants him to bend her over, fuck her until she sobs.
But she knows he won’t give her that.
Before she can grab it, Bucky holds it above his head.
“You’re evil.” She mutters. “Come on, give me it.”
“Nope!” He smirks.
“Go fu-“
She yelps when Bucky loops his thumb through the belt loop of her jumpsuit and pulls her close to him.
“Remember what I told you? Watch your language.”
“Give me the candy or you’re not getting head for a week.”
Bucky’s eyes widen and he hands her the box.
“Thank you.”
She presses a kiss to his nose and walks away with the box.
She knows what Bucky’s doing. He’s riling her up, teasing her.
But two can play that game.
She sits up on the counter and opens the tin.
Turkish Delight. Candy she used to eat as a child.
He’s staring at her. She can feel it. Her fingers pluck a candy from the box and hold it up.
“Want one?”
Bucky walks over to her and wedges himself between her thighs.
“Sure.”
She unwraps the candy and places a finger on his chin, beckoning him to open his mouth.
Her fingers place the treat on his tongue.
“Sweet, isn’t it?”
He kisses her and she can taste the sugar on his lips.
“Almost as sweet as you.”
She grabs another and hops off of the counter, humored by Bucky’s frustrated look.
“Sam probably wants everyone ready by the time he gets back. So, I don’t know.” She eyes him up and down, ready to drool at the sight of his arms. “Get dressed.”
“Oh doll, I’m already dressed.” He chuckles.
“Good. Then help me out.” Her fingers deftly unbutton the top of her jumpsuit, exposing her black sports bra. She reaches for her harness and shoves it in Bucky’s hands. “Buckle me in.”
…
Sex was the last thing on her mind when she’s face to face with the new Captain America.
“Karli Morganthau is too dangerous for you to be pulling this shit.” He yells.
Angel rolls her eyes at the sight of John Walker.
“How’d you find us now?” Bucky replies, voice full of annoyance.
“You think two Avengers can walk around Latvia without drawing attention?”
Angel’s seen his face in the news. Lemar, the better of America’s new dynamic duo.
“No more keeping us in the dark, and you can tell us why you broke him” John points to Zemo “out of prison.”
“He did that himself, technically.” Bucky answers.
“That is an unbelievable explanation! And who the hell are you?” He points to Angel.
“I’m a friend.” She grumbles, eyes narrowed.
“You have no business being here. And whatever you’re wearing, all you’re going to do is draw attention.”
“And your little Mr. America getup isn’t?”
“Why don’t you go back to working in European intelligence or whatever it is you do.”
“You better watch your mouth, Mr. Walker.” She snarls. “Is that really how you speak to a lady?”
“I know where Karli is.” Zemo interrupts their feud.
“Well, where?”
“All we know is,” Sam answers, “It’s a memorial. We’ll intercept her there.”
“That means civilians, high risk of casualties.” Lemar states.
“Alright good.” John schemes. “We’ll move in fast, take her by surprise.”
“Not a good idea, John.” Angel retorts. He halts in his steps and turns to her.
“You have no clue what you’re getting yourself into. This is an American situation.”
She leans in until she’s staring into his eyes. Rage broils inside of her.
“Let me tell you something John, I don’t care about your medals of honor. I don’t care that you’re wearing that red and blue suit. So I’ll tell you this once, and only once. If you dare speak to me like this again, I won’t hesitate to-“
Bucky pulls her back, giving her a stern look.
“Hey,” he rubs her shoulder, trying to settle her anger. “He’s not worth it.”
“Oh, so she’s your little girlfriend huh?”
Angel presses the tip of her knife against his chin and backs him into a wall.
“You stay out of Bucky’s business.” She seethes.
“Hey, hey, hey!”
This time, both Sam and Bucky had to pull her away, but she keeps her murderous glare trained on him.
“Jesus Christ, Barnes. Keep your little psycho under control.” John spits.
“Hey, don’t speak to her like that,” Sam demands. “Just because you don’t know her doesn’t give you an excuse to be rude.”
“Either you show her some respect,” Bucky says “or all of the help we have to offer is off of the table.”
Sam nods in agreement and eventually so does Zemo, who adds a small shrug.
“I wasn't actually going to kill him.” She mutters under her breath.
“We know.” Sam pulls her into a side hug. He directs his words back to John. “I want to talk to her alone.”
“I’m not losing her again.”
“Look, the person closest to her died. She’s vulnerable. If there’s any time to reason with her, it’s now.”
“What?” John halts in his steps. “No, wait stop. We are way past reasoning with her.”
“Sam,” Lemar states. “If you walk in there cold, you could die.”
“But if you walk in guns blazing, you could have the blood of hundreds of civilians on your hands.” Angel folds her arms. “Besides, if things go wrong, I’m trained in mixed martial arts.”
“You think a black belt will save you from a super-soldier?”
Angel snorts.
“It has before.”
Bucky looks down and stifles a laugh.
“I used to counsel soldiers dealing with trauma, okay?” Sam argues with John. “This is in my wheelhouse.”
They’re all silent, staring daggers at each other.
“John,” Lemar breaks the silence “If he can talk her down, it might be worth a try.” He gives Angel a kind smile. “And I think we give this girl a chance to show us what she’s got.”
“Thank you.” She smiles back.
“I’m sure this can all come to an agreeable conclusion.” Zemo points forward. “My associate is just up ahead.”
They watch as Zemo approaches a young girl, handing her some money. She beckons them to follow her down a cobblestone path, into a building, and through the boiler room.
“You’ve got ten minutes,” John states while handcuffing Zemo to a pipe. “Then we’re doing things my way.”
While they wait, Angel spends her time playing with her butterfly knife, spinning the handle around her fingers.
“How do you not cut yourself doing that?” Lemar asks.
She spins the knife closed.
“I have before, it’s just about practice and being careful. Here, I’ll show you.”
Bucky observes Angel showing off her knife tricks to Lemar.
Despite the stressful situation, he still felt a pang of possessiveness. She was his Angel. He gave her that name and when she said she’d accepted it. In a way, she was his and he was hers.
“What’s your name? I don’t think you’ve ever told me.”
He hears Lemar ask.
Angel giggles.
“It’s Artemis. Like the goddess.”
Artemis. It’s fitting, Bucky thinks. The goddess of the hunt.
“That’s really cool. Let me guess, your parents were huge mythology fans?”
“You can say that.” She chuckles.
His eyes narrow when she smiles at Lemar.
Their conversation continues and Bucky’s jealousy burns brighter when she places her fingers on the fabric of Lemar’s suit, giving him a comment on how she’s got an eye for fashion and how nice the fabric was. From his position by the door, he sees her turn to him and give him a wink.
Bucky scowls. That little minx.
John crosses his arms and stares daggers into her.
“What exactly do you do, anyway?” He scoffs. “Are you some kind of spy?”
Angel raises a brow.
“I’m not a spy. I’m just a problem solver.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” John shakes his head and secures the shield on his arm. “Nevermind. I’m going in.”
“Oh, come on John, it’s only been eight minutes.”
“No. Don’t do that. Don’t patronize me.”
“I’m not-” Angel sighs and turns away, focusing her attention on pulling her hair back.
Bucky stops him before John can get through the doorway.
“It must be so easy for you.” John’s voice is full of malice. “All that serum running through your veins. Barnes, your partner needs backup. Do you really want his blood on your hands?”
Bucky can see Angel slowly shake her head, telling him not to give in to John’s words. But he can’t. He’s already done so much harm. He’s responsible for the deaths of so many people, he can’t let Sam become another.
So, he lets John walk past him, Lemar following along.
Angel runs up to him.
“Bucky, why’d you do that?”
“I can’t… I can’t risk it. I can’t risk losing him.”
She sighs and places a gentle hand on his cheek.
“I understand.” Her lips land a gentle kiss on his nose. “But don’t let his words get to you. Now,” She grins and lightly smacks his ass. “Go make sure he doesn’t kill anyone.”
With one final kiss, Bucky runs off.
She turns around to see the handcuffs dangling from the pole. Her blood runs cold. Zemo escaped and who knows what he’ll do.
She runs through the halls, boots quietly slapping on the concrete floors. From her left, she hears a series of loud gunshots and crunching glass.
Her feet lightly tread next to the walls, ears picking up every little sound.
She jumps, heartbeat pounding when the thump of a body falling to the ground meets her ears.
Did Zemo kill someone? Was it Karli? Another Flag-Smasher?
She runs through the door closest to her. From behind a table, she spots John staring at a small vial. A small vial of the serum. Before she can say anything, he runs away.
As she quietly walks into the room, she spots Zemo, lying on the ground, unconscious. No one else was here.
She crouches down next to him and gently shakes his shoulder.
“Baron? Zemo? Come on, wake up.”
He doesn’t move.
She picks up his wrist, pressing her pointer and middle fingers on the vein. A sigh of relief passes her lips at the feeling of a pulse.
Her hands shake his shoulder again, this time, with more vigor.
“Zemo!” She shouts.
His eyes snap open and he groans in pain.
“You passed out Baron.”
“I’m aware.” He grumbles. “John Walker threw the shield at me.”
“Of course he did.”
She offers him a hand and helps him stand up.
“Can you walk?” She asks.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be okay.”
The two make their way through the city until they reach Zemo’s apartment. Sam was already there, typing away on his computer.
Angel wets a towel in the kitchen and hands it to Zemo.
“Go, lie down. Put this over your eyes.”
She walks down the hall towards Bucky’s room. With a tired sigh, she removes her shoes, jumpsuit, and harness.
Her eyes close as she lies on the bed in her underwear. The sports bra felt much too tight but she didn’t care. She was tired. Her morning sexual frustration had caught up to her but she didn’t feel like doing anything about it.
Even though it was only seven in the evening, she just wanted to sleep.
Right when she’s drifting off to sleep, the slam of the bedroom door jolts her awake.
Bucky is standing in front of her, arms crossed, eyes filled with rage.
“Get off the bed.” He snarls.
She laughs and rolls over onto her stomach.
“No. If sex is what you want, let’s do it on the bed.”
She hears a sigh behind her and her eyes widen when she feels Bucky’s hands wrap around her ankles.
“Buck, what are you-”
Her words come to a halt when he pulls her off of the bed and onto her knees.
“You wanted me to fuck you?” He seethes. “Fuck you rough until you can’t speak?”
“That was the plan.” She smirks.
He twists a hand in her hair and pulls her head back. Her breath is shallow as she looks up, meeting Bucky’s angry eyes.
He’s mad. At the entire Karli situation, and maybe with her. But his anger towards her, she assumes, is fiery, lustful anger. Anger that she can have a lot of fun with.
“If you had let me cum earlier,” She snaps, “ maybe I wouldn’t have been such a brat.”
She rubs her thighs together, trying to alleviate the arousal burning through her. A whine leaves her lips when he kicks her legs apart.
He tightens his grip on her hair.
“You really need to learn some respect.”
Bucky places the toe of his boot on her back and pushes her face down onto the floor. She doesn’t resist, giving in to his dominance.
“Aww, look at you,” he mocks, “You were so bold earlier, my Angel. Where did that fire go?”
Her heart swells. He’s no longer calling her Angel. He’s called her his Angel. She was his.
Footsteps echo around her and she takes a shaky breath when his black boots come into view.
“Look at me, doll. I wanna see those pretty eyes.”
His voice is commanding, authoritative. It drew her in, made her head spin.
She looks up at him with wide eyes as he bends down on a knee.
“Were you trying to rile me up? Trying to make me angry?”
She nods.
Bucky roughly grabs her chin, cold metal digging into her cheeks.
“Use your words.”
“Y-yes Sergeant.” She squeaks.
He stares down at her, anger and lust in his eyes.
“Open your mouth.”
Her lips part and Bucky spits, letting his saliva pool on her tongue.
His fingers press on her chin, closing her mouth. She swallows, heat burning in her tummy.
“So now, you want to be a good girl, huh?”
He picks her up by her neck and shoves her face into the soft mattress. His fingers loop around the elastic waistband of her panties and pull, the fabric digging into her cunt.
“Yes, I’m your good girl.” She whines. “I’ll be good. Promise.”
He leans in close, his warm breath brushing over her ear.
“I don’t believe you.”
He rears his metal hand against her ass, leaving a red handprint of her skin.
A choked breath leaves her lips. She relishes in the pain and gives him a cocky smile.
“Is that all you got Sarge?”
He lands another hard smack, this time on her thigh. A whimper escapes her lips.
“Oh, you’re really asking for it, aren’t you?”
He shifts his hand on her neck, wrapping it around the front of her neck. She squeezes at the sides, slowing the circulation of blood to her head.
She opens her mouth to speak, but the hand on her throat stops the words from leaving her lips.
The clinking of his belt buckle sends a wave of lust through her.
She was finally getting what she wanted.
His hand on her neck is released and she takes in a sharp breath.
He pulls her panties down her legs and throws them to the side.
She gasps at the feeling of cold metal rubbing between her folds. Her fingers dig into the sheets, grabbing at the fabric.
“You’re practically dripping.” He muses, “Who knew you were such a masochist?”
“Only for you.” She keens.
“Only for me? Not for anyone else?”
“Yes! Yes! Only you!”
Bucky hums and lands another smack on her ass. She yelps and tears threaten to spill from her eyes.
He shoves two fingers inside of her and she gasps at the cool feeling of the metal.
She squirms around as he twists his fingers, pressing against that spot inside of her.
Hunger swarms her brain. She wanted, no, needed more.
What he’s doing is sadistic, she thinks. Constantly bringing her to the edge, but never letting her tip over.
He lets his thumb press against her clit and the tears she’s been trying to hold back spill over. She lets out a quiet sob into the sheets but Bucky doesn’t stop his movements.
“I need more.” She quietly whimpers.
“You think you have the right to beg?” He asks nonchalantly. “After that little show?”
“I’m sorry.” She cries.
Her eyes squeeze shut and she turns her head, letting her cheek rest on the bedsheets. When she glances up, she can see Bucky’s amused smirk.
She feels the tip of his cock pressing against her entrance and she holds her breath.
“Oh doll,” he coos, thumbing away her tears, “You’re so pretty when you cry.”
A sudden thrust of his hips buries his cock inside of her. Bucky clamps his hand over her lips, muffling her desperate cries.
“Shh, shh,” He whispers gently. “It’s okay, love. Be a good girl and take it.”
He starts moving, his hips slowly thrusting into her. The fire inside of her burns, hotter and hotter. Her head is reeling as she feels herself come closer to her impending orgasm. Despite how rough he is with her, she feels safe. Safe with him. She feels safe enough to fall into submission, open and pliant for him.
Her sobs against his hand become louder, more intense and he bends down to nip at her neck.
“Are you gonna cum, angel? Cum all over my cock?”
She nods, eyes squeezed shut.
“Do you think you deserve it?” He asks.
“No,” she mumbles against his hand. “But I want to.”
He brushes his fingers down the length of her back and she shivers.
“You wanna cum, doll? Ask nicely.”
He releases his hand and grabs her hip, pulling her deeper onto his cock.
“Please.” She gasps. “Please, let me cum!”
“You have to do better than that.”
“Please, I’ll be so good for you! I’ll never flirt with anyone again! Just please! Please, I wanna cum.”
He picks up his pace, and she finds it harder to stave off her orgasm.
“So polite.” He hums, “But not yet.”
She lets out a pathetic sob.
“Please.” She whimpers.
“Be patient. You’ll get to cum soon.”
Her breaths are shallow as she tries to keep herself from cumming. She bites down on her lower lip but the pain does little to help.
Relief washes over her when Bucky speaks again.
“You’ve been such a good girl for me. Come on angel, cum for me.”
Her teeth bite down on the sheets as she’s hurtles over the edge, her orgasm sending shockwaves through her body.
As her chest heaves and her mind becomes foggy, she can barely feel Bucky pull out and releases him cum on her back.
She lies there, upper half sprawled over the mattress, a dopey smile on her face. A hum of pleasure slips past her lips when Bucky wipes his cum away with a warm washcloth.
“You okay, doll?” He asks.
She nods her head.
The bed shifts as he sits on the bed and pulls her towards him.
“Come on,” He lies down and pulls her close to him. He noses at the back of her shoulder. “Get some rest.”
The sun was about to set, bathing their bodies in a golden glow. He runs his metal fingers over her bicep, cooling down her heated skin.
She’s tired, so tired. Yet she’s happy. The first time in a long time that she’s actually felt happy.
“Bucky?” She asks in a fucked out daze.
“Yes my angel?”
A moment of silence passes.
“You’re the only one who’s made me feel human.”

Lone Traveler | Venti
pairing: venti x hurt! reader
summary: you often clear out hilichurl camps with amber and the knights but the one time you do it alone, something had to happen to you. fortunately, a certain (cute) bard had came to your rescue and come to send you back.
a/n: my first genshin fic!! of course it had to be venti hehe, hope you like it and massive apologies if he’s ooc/for any errors! send requests if youd like >3<
Fighting the hilichurls at night had become a hobby you recently developed after going out on random ‘clearing’ trips with the Knights of Favonius, specifically Amber, who on every occasion after the mission, treats you and Paimon to Good Hunter’s sticky honey roast.
All of you were a good team, whenever there was a bigger monster, you knew someone would always have your back, and every mission had always presented success, the worst injuries only being a few deep scratches that Barbara could heal easily.
But one day, you had decided that it was probably the perfect time to go out and venture alone. The knights were busy and feeling confident fighting by yourself, you had taken the opportunity. Paimon had stayed back, claiming that she doesn't want to go if the day wouldn't end with honey roast (not that she helps anyways), but you hadn’t minded, saying that you were just going not far out and if you don't return by morning, then she should maybe try and find you.
Though seeing as you had never done a solo venture out of Mondstadt before, it was no surprised you had gone lost in the woods as soon as you had entered the thick trees.
You had been walking for a while, and suddenly, you saw a small campfire. Assuming it was a friendly traveler such as yourself and in with your heart that had been beating with slight fear and uneasiness, you had quickly ran towards them without thinking twice hoping they would help you find your way back before the sun rose. but when you got closer, you had realized it was in fact, not a person. and when you had come to that conclusion, it had been too late as the first monster that had spotted you shot an arrow directly towards you, alarming the rest of the batch.
This was bad
You successfully were able to avoid the first arrow, but the moment got you distracted and in a blink of an eye, you found yourself being pushed and thrown by the force of a shield of a Mitachurl charging full speed at you. you feel your feet start to burn as they were dragged against the rough grass, and the painful sensation as you hit headfirst against the rubble.
“Ouch...” you groan quietly, reaching out to rub your head, but the moment you had pulled back, the hilichurls roared, as if releasing a battle cry to alarm the others.
Fuck
Deciding to be smart, you had gotten up and ran (half limped) away, finding it difficult to outrun the group of monsters but managing to get far enough to be out of sight from them who you definitely took note to deal with in the morning,
Or make someone else deal with them, you had thought as you sat down on the stone, thankful that you were able to trudge towards the big tree just outside Mondstadt and inspected the damage it had done to you. only then had you realized that the hand you had used to cover your head was sticky and moist, and the moment you focused, you saw it was red. you were bleeding.
Just great.
You looked up at the sky, blanketing Teyvat with litters of stars that had offered a little comfort at the moment; and released a small sigh. it was dark and you were lost, although you could just take the path back to Mondstadt, there was a high chance the monsters were waiting for you as stupid as they could be, and you really didn't think you could fight them at the moment with the gash on your leg and your bleeding head.
You shut your eyes tight, silently wishing that you hadn't decided to be so brave and venture on your own and regretting not forcing Paimon to come with you. this was it, you were over. sometimes you wished your other sibling was here for you. they’d know what to do.
But not a minute later, you feel it. a light breeze, a gust of wind passing just through you, as if gently caressing. you shivered, what was that?
It had been too brief to be a random wind passing, and when you opened your eyes, you understood why.
The moment you opened your eyes, you found yourself staring back into an unfamiliar pair of aqua orbs, wide and curious staring right into your soul, extremely close for your comfort. so naturally, as one who had just opened their eyes after trying to calm down after a fight and had assumed was alone would do, you screamed at the top of your lungs and moved back, trying to get as far as the strange person was from you.
“Woah, hey- calm down!” the person says, alarmed that you had started to run away from him. he starts to walk closer to you, and you assumed he was about to shut your mouth from how he had both hands outstretched over each other, so you only screamed harder.
“Okay, okay! I won't hurt you, see? I’m not going to hurt you,” he says gently, eyes wide as if he was also afraid, trying to calm you down, and once you did, he smiles, “there we go. hey there! the name’s Venti, you okay?”
“What?” you asked in disbelief, because who was this person?! Why was he here? Were you being kidnapped? Is this a dream?
Venti frowns, “hey, don't look at me like that!” he says feigning offence, “you’re y/n, right? I saw you running away from those monsters earlier, you got beat really bad,”
“H-How did you know...?” you asked, slowly standing up, looking up at him as he had been taller than you, “and I’m a traveler and I know how to fight, I just... got surprised,” you insisted, not wanting to seem weak in front of the boy. you couldn’t see well, but you could tell he had dark blue to black hair with short twin braids (that strangely reminded you of the statue of the seven that had granted you with the power of anemo just before you had arrived in mondstadt).
He looked so familiar, yet you were certain you had never seen him.
“Oh, I just know,” he smiles, offering you a hand, “can you stand?”
“Are... are you from Mondstadt?” you ask, hesitant to take his hand. you glance down at his vision, a proud anemo symbol displayed on it. you hear Venti chuckle.
“Yeah!” he says, “but, not always. I mean,” he pauses, “if you’ll try to find me there, you won't be able to. I’m a bard,” he adds, as if it would help you understand better, “but you can trust me, don’t worry. I know this place well,”
“I’m perfectly capable,” you shook your head at his claims, “where did you even come from?!”
“I told you! I saw you running from those hilichurls and decided to come and help,” he pouts, arm dropping to his side, “Come on, you're hurt. I know you're capable but... I’ll-I’ll just bring you back to Mondstadt so I can know you arrived safely, promise!”
“I dont know...” you look around, fiddling with your fingers in fear. it was dark, and you weren't usually afraid of it or even the least bit bothered, but with what you had endured just minutes before, you were surely not going to return alone.
Sensing this, Venti breaks into a smile, “great! come on, now, I wouldn't let a fellow traveler go back alone! especially not the honorary knight!”
Deciding not to ask how he knew these things, you decided to take his hand and follow his lead towards Mondstadt, or at least, hope you were heading there now. you didn’t want to trust this self proclaimed ‘bard’, but the options were limited, and you really didn’t want to choose death in the obvious sense, which was in the hands of a hilichurl, probably found by Paimon a few hours later.
On your way back, you find out that Venti was definitely talkative. he had asked you a bunch of questions, and even offered to sing you some of his songs. the sun had slowly begun to rise just far into the horizon as you listened to the bard’s chatter, casually slipping in a few jokes that had the two of you laughing so hard that you had to stop for a moment at one point. and although he might be doing it out of pity for your bleeding (now dried up) head, you still felt warm whenever he talked passionately about Mondstadt and its people as if he ruled over them, albeit being quite mischievous.
You found your chemistry somewhat a match, as if… as if you had met him before.
Thankfully, there weren’t any hilichurls blocking the path on the way, so you didn’t have to deal with them anymore (or at least, for the time being. it was as if they had all left as soon as Venti arrived... or he had cleared them out the moment he saw you running away from them. either way, you were thankful the journey wasn't bothered)
“Here we are! Mondstadt! the city of freedom!” Venti smiles, his smile on par with the rising sun’s as he finally lets your hand go the moment you arrive at the bridge- that had been the moment you realized he had been holding your hand the whole time. gosh, I really trusted someone to bring me home.
“Well, I did bring you home, didn’t I?” Venti laughs, and you bite your cheek, feeling flustered that you had accidentally said your thought out loud, “I guess this is where we part!”
“Huh?” you asked, dumbfounded, “wait, where will you be going?”
Venti merely smiles, bowing dramatically for a brief moment, “around,” he states vaguely, “farewell, young one!”
“You’re saying that as if you’re not young yourself,” you mumbled, and at that, Venti bursts out laughing, causing you to look at him weirdly, “what? Isn’t that true?”
“you have no idea how many times I get that,” he wipes a tear dramatically, “well, until we meet again, traveler! be careful next time, or i might as well have to find you again,” he jokes, before waving you off, walking away from the bridge and back out the path and into the woods, where he disappears through the thick trees without turning back.
What an odd person.
So the next day, when you had ventured further than the usual route the knights cleared out, you silently hope you’d find him again.

The Development of Law and Zoro relationship: Wano, ...and Law Is Not Happy About That
<Part I: Before Meeting>> <<Part II: Sabaody Archipelago, The First Meeting>> <<Part III: Punk Hazard: The Alliance (A)__(B)>> <<Part IV: Dressrosa, The Breaking Point (The Plan Failed)__ (Saving Law)__(Protecting Law)__ (Birdcage, Pica and Doflamingo)__ (Aftermath)>> <<Part V: Zou, The Kindred Spirits (Traveling Together)__(Searching for Nakama)__ (Reunion)__ (Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance)__(The Last Moments before War)>> Part VI: Wano, Against Emperors (The Untold Journey)__(Luffy & Zoro Means Troubles…)__(…and Law Is Not Happy About That)
The fight between Law and Hawkins was stopped; Law didn’t manage to eliminate the enemy nor prevent information leakage about alliance presence in Wano. He almost was run over by a speeding cart with stolen food (another “crime” against Orochi & Kaido, which Straw Hats committed in his absence). No wonder why Law was so pissed of at Zoro (chapter 918):
➽ Up to this point, Law never have been so openly angry at Roronoa, nor aggressive toward the other man. Now, Law vented all frustration and anger while Zoro kept silent… and maybe felt some embarrassment(?) about Trafalgar’s unusual outburst, considering bubble speech with three dots and “sweat drop” expressing Zoro’s reaction in a more visible way.
➽ Another interesting detail is how calmly Zoro endured Law’s angry rant. He simply let the other man scream at him, and even tolerated grabbing his kimono and invading his personal space. When it comes to scolding, Zoro reacts differently, depending on the seriousness of the situation and who is scolding him. He either fights back in such situations or doesn’t respond to angry rants and taunts. For example, if Sanji started screaming and pointing his faults, Zoro most likely wouldn’t be so tolerable because those two like to antagonize each other. Seems like Roronoa opted for the calm approach with Law. Maybe Zoro knew that Law was right and his anger was justified. Maybe he simply figured it will be better if Law got all the anger and stress out of him. Or maybe he was just taken by surprise by the sudden outburst?
↪ In all fairness, I think he perfectly knew what Law’s reaction will be, especially considering this ambiguous frame:
At first it seems like Zoro talked about Kinemon, what honestly would make perfect sense. He already mentioned Kinemon when repeated samurai’s warning to Luffy but couldn’t really say his name in front of just met Kiku. At the same time, he could also talk about Law, because at this point he was familiar enough with the man to predict his angry reaction. Law seems to be prone to stress and he likes planning everything ahead and Zoro not sticking to plan (letting Luffy smash enemy) would definitely earn Law’s ire. Righteous so. Then what was the point of arguing with Trafalgar? Even more, when the man, despite stress and rage, doesn't hold on such emotions for too long. Which really seems like the best way to deal with a pissed off Heart Captain was just let him scream until he cooled down and adapted to the new situation.
➽ Because Zoro did not stop Luffy as he should - as Law hoped he would - Trafalgar was blaming Zoro for the whole situation, even though Luffy was as much guilty, charging into unknown without care for consequences. Zoro not once tried to excuse himself or Luffy, did nothing to stop Law’s outburst nor remind Law he wasn’t his captain (superior) thus he wasn’t obligated to listen. He simply let Law scream and blame him for the mess.
Anime expended this moment by actually giving Zoro a chance to explain to Law why he screwed so badly. Which literally was “I met Luffy” what immediately refocused Trafalgar’s anger from Zoro to solely Luffy:
This extended scene fits well with already existing Law’s personal experience from Dressrosa - the usually stoic and reliable Zoro will throw away rational thinking in the favor of Luffy’s whim and craziness. Monkey D. Luffy has that kind of effect on Roronoa.
Also, another funny thing anime did with that scene is when Law was scolding his fellow Supernova, Zoro was maintaining eye contact.
But when he was saying “sorry”, he was clearly looking to his left, instead at Law. Which makes the apology feeling insincere. Zoro wasn’t really that sorry about the mess but he said it, most likely to placate angry (stressed??) Law. Seems like Roronoa is bad at lying; not on Luffy’s level of bad, but still not really into telling lies.
Law most likely could tell Pirate Hunter wasn’t sorry at all, which explains grabbing Zoro’s kimono and screaming more at the other man’s face.
➽ Zoro’s patience and lack of response makes an interesting contrast to Law’s unusual aggressiveness. We may only wonder if Roronoa already had some experiences with such an outburst from the other Supernova. Once again, there is little to no information how their relationship was affected by the journey and situation in Wano, nor why Zoro was so indifferent while Law’s level of stress so high.
➽ Manga and anime versions of the scene give us valuable informations. One: Law was aware that Zoro promised to not cause trouble, like not fighting with samurais and Kaido’s men. That of course was a rational thing to ask of Zoro, because the man is too bloodthirsty for his own good and is always up for a good fight. The manga translation makes it look like Law personally witnessed Pirate Hunter swearing to not cause any trouble. Yet Law’s screaming sounds a bit confusing. On one hand, he knew Zoro A) became a wanted man and B) was supposed to be in Flower Capital. So it seems Law was informed about Zoro’s mission of pretending to be ronin. Whatever Kinemon initiated him from the start or after the wanted poster was made public, Law understood the danger of drawing the enemy's attention to the alliance. Which may be the reason why he was so mad at Zoro and referred to him by surname or called in his mind an idiot. On another, asking Zoro - a wanted man - why didn’t he stay in capital sounds, well, kinda stupid (and interestingly, the additional symbol of irritation was added to this specific question / bubble). Roronoa killed in broad daylight an important person (magistrate), and either killed or injured the magistrate's samurais, so it is not like Zoro could wander through the capital or any city without causing more problems. Of course, wandering directless did not help the alliance at all but it was still the best outcome. As a wanted man, Zoro could either stay in capitol and draw enemy’s attention to himself - and in result, endanger Franky, Robin and Usopp’s missions and even alliance’s presence in the Wano or wander through the wasteland in which was easier avoid unnecessary troubles and, in case of fight, hide dead bodies without increasing the vigilance of Beast Pirates or Orochi’s samurais. As a wanted man, Roronoa wasn’t really in position to come back to Kinemon because of possible pursuit - though he managed to wander into Kuri region, but that is more lack of direction sense than anything intentional, I guess. Unless this is why Law was the most angry? That Zoro came too close to their main secret base of operation? Anyway, Trafalgar for sure did not hold back and vented all his anger and frustration at still passive Zoro.
Soon, the group made it into Okobore Town and gave the stolen food to starving locals while Luffy brought the fresh water with himself. Straw Hat told the happy people “I’m Luffytaro! If anyone asks, you tell ‘em my name!” (chapter 918). For the first time Luffy also noticed Law - now much calmer than a moment ago. Law made clear, that what Luffy and Zoro did was ultimately an act of rebellion against Wano (Orochi and Kaido) to which Luffy responded he was “repaying the favor” to Tama, who fed him, once again getting into additional trouble just because someone gave him free food. The serious note disappeared right away, when Luffy started screaming at the starving people to not eat all meat without him:
➽ The meeting between Luffy and Law is drastically different from meeting of Law and Zoro. Like was mentioned, Trafalgar didn’t show any anger or frustration, so either screaming at Zoro calmed him down or he already gave up trying to reason with Monkey D. Luffy. Taking into account all previous adventures from Punk Hazard to Zou, what in universe happened through what? One or two months at best? Law’s resignation makes sense. Luffy wouldn’t care nor bother to apologize for the pulled stunt, while Zoro, well, didn’t care much either, but at least didn’t try to argue back.
➽ Once the serious talk was done and Luffy literally jumped after the meat, Zoro and Law shared the same reaction (visualed by bubble speech with three dots, though the “sweat drop” symbolising embarrassment(?) is only on Zoro’s part). Despite the previous intense moment, both men were again on good terms and even in agreement toward Luffy’s idiotic/childish behaviour.
The next time we see Zoro, Law and Luffy, Trafalgar kept his distance from everyone else. He stood the closest to Luffy yet with back turned to him. Was that sort of ostentatious expression of dissatisfaction or did he keep watch in case of an enemy's attack, hard to tell.
Luffy loudly declared his intention about Wano to Tama (“By the time we leave this country, it’ll be a place where you can eat as much as you want, every single day!!!”). With a sigh, Zoro noted how because of Luffy’s action, the enemy will come after them for real. Law did not take such a comment from Zoro kindly, because the man ignored(?) his own part in the mess.
➽ Surprisingly, Law still was angry more at Zoro than Luffy, who was the main culprit. But it may be just Zoro’s uncaring attitude that provokes Law so much.
➽ Despite the still fresh feeling of irritation, Law decided to focus at the best course of action - moving on to safest place. In this case, to the ruins of Oden’s Castle, in which Kinemon and the rest of the alliance stayed in hiding.
The group said goodbye to Tama who was taken to home by Horselina (a former enemy-turned-into-her-loyal-servant thanks to Tama’s devil fruit powers). Like always, Law kept his distance from others (in manga on one frame, he kept close to Zoro, on another, to Luffy). In anime, between sharing food and saying goodbye to Tama, Trafalgar was shown usually close to Zoro, similar like he did on Zou:
At this point, there is something to ponder a bit about Law and his (lack of) interaction with people. Like in the scene above, does Law keep close to Zoro (or Luffy) because of their bond (trust?) alone or is that partially due to his minimal social skills? As in, he keeps close to people he at least knows and doesn’t make contact with strangers unless it’s necessary. Zoro and Law both have some asocial traits (seen especially in their tendency to isolating themselves from too large group), but in contrast, Zoro and Luffy were shown through the Wano arc to interact and even befriend the local people while Trafalgar was interacting only with his crew, Straw Hats, samurai group (extended of Shinobu person) - the people he already knew for some time. Law isn’t going out his way to meet new people (like Luffy) nor bonds with accidentally met people (like Zoro with Tonoyasu). It seems in Law’s nature to avoid interaction with strangers as much as possible. Which makes me wonder if that comes simply from his introverted nature, general distrust for people or maybe even some social awkwardness created by childhood trauma and growing up in criminal organisation (Donquixote Pirates)? Because Law’s way to interact with people he just met is either ignore them (seen above) or act in cool manners around them, like in Punk Hazard with Straw Hats… but frankly, Straw Hats freaked him there on so many levels it really makes Law looks like social interaction is not his thing.
This reflection actually comes close to another detail. Namely, Law’s general feeling about Straw Hats helping starved people. Because the locals were truly happy and expresses that just before the departure of Three Supernovas (chapter 919):
Law has strong opinions about pirates, it seems. And it comes from a man that admitted he doesn't like to kill but yeah, doing nice things for (poor) people makes him sick. Was he so annoyed by the cheering people, or did he simply didn’t know how to react to such situation so he went with a grumpy approach?
Law expressed a lot emotions; the outbursts of anger departs from the image of stoic captain but at the same it makes me think that Law must feel okay around Zoro to be so open about his frustration (and lack of control over situation?). At the same time, Zoro let him take out all anger on him without a word. But the most important thing, no matter how much Zoro’s screwed up, no matter how much Law’s screamed and accused and was unhappy about, it didn’t change their already estabilished relationship. Once the situation calmed down, Law again kept close to Zoro and shared the same opinion about Luffy’s antics and in general they were okay in each company.
Next part: Separated Again

The Adventures of Shota Jaune, Ep II
Chapter Two
---------
Two Months have passed.
---------
The last couple of months had been absolutely wild for Vernal.
First, the woman she respected the most and thought was the strongest in the world was beaten by three children... and Vernal, after it turned out Raven was a complete psycho bitch. In a moment of sheer panic she had just swore allegiance to the strongest thing in the vicinity. The little aura monster that had knocked her old boss's teeth out.
Jaune Arc aka The Boss
It had been a whirlwind of a week, getting her own room with new clothes and an actual bed, people who seemed to care about her, three meals a day and a completely stocked kitchen and someone to follow that wasn’t a complete psycho.
That was the good stuff, that was what kept her going. That and if she wanted to be the world's strongest Huntress it was probably a good idea to train under a actual huntsman, and who was training the human equivalent of a Fire Dust Bomb. While Vernal didn’t consider herself Branwen anymore, the ideals didn’t fade.
‘Nature has only one rule; The Strong owns the Weak.’ Her old mentor’s words came to her again.
Vernal scowled. ‘So much for being the strongest huntress there is.’
Her time at the Arc House had really opened her eyes toward how big the world actually is.
Raven was strong, really strong. She was a former Huntress and Beacon Alumni, she was fast, strong, high aura levels and control, along with a versatile semblance that made long distance travel her bitch. All of that, to top of all that, to just further put herself outside of the realms of warriors and huntress and huntsman she had Maiden Powers, fucking magic.
But, she lost, not just, because there's always either a hard counter, or a bigger fish, that wasn’t the only reason. Despite her power, despite her being the most notorious criminal in Mistral, despite her experience, she lost...
Because... because...’ Vernal thought. ‘She’s a coward.’
Vernal had seen her kill before, huntsman, brave civilian, or Grimm, or even other tribes. But, never from anything other than a position of power, she always waited till there was a moment of weakness to strike, less warrior more assassin, and if things got too tough she’d whip out her Maiden Powers.
More often than not, when more than one hunter came after them, Raven would have them move out. Saying, “They're too weak for us to bother with.” Now, Vernal was sure it was just her cowardice… Like her inability to stick around with her real family.
Why she took Vernal in to begin with.
‘Because, she’s a coward… I’m just a replacement, so she doesn’t have to think about…’
The time with the Arcs had definitely taught her that there was more to strength than fighting ability, and Raven was lacking in conviction, the thing Mr. Arc and The Boss had spades.
The Boss was way stronger than anyone she’d ever met, in terms of Aura and physical strength, yet his sisters, mother, those two lackeys of his, and his own father weren’t the least bit afraid of him.
They had conviction, that they knew their family.
Darkness be damned, those two lackeys could even put up a decent fight with him.
The oldest Arc child, Gris could even match her little brother in raw strength for a little while and even hold him down, even if he got up right afterwards.
Then there was Mr. Arc, if his son was a dust bomb, an all direction and all consuming blast of destruction, then he was a high powered, high precision plasma beam. Not as powerful, sure, but no less dangerous or devastating when used correctly.
Mr. Arc was still teaching his son and his two lackeys… and Vernal even. His skill, aura manipulation, and physical conditioning was insane. Sure, he didn’t have even a tenth of her Boss’s reserves, but he had more than twice Ravens, and he had the skills to manipulate it like it was just another limb of his body.
He could probably beat Raven if he wanted to, and didn’t lack the courage to stand his ground.
Actually, Vernal was entirely sure he could, considering he was fighting her little monster of a Boss right now, and controlling the fight handily.
Mr. Arc practically danced around his son, as the boy tried to land a hit on him, swinging wildly and kicking up small windstorms as he did so. The boy got nowhere close to landing a hit on his father, as the man anticipated blow after blow, stepping out of his son’s range and enduring the shock-waves his son released with practiced ease.
He stepped into his son’s range and stuck his leg out between his son’s moving feet, tripping him, then shield bashing him in the back and sending him flying into the ground. The Boss bounced off the ground, leaving an indent where he hit it, and landed on his back.
The Boss got back up, his face red, and smashed his practice sword into the ground, breaking the ground where it landed, sending boulder sized clumps of earth into the air, Arthur Arc deflected and evaded the earth as it flew at him. Redirecting the earthen shrapnel back at his son with small controlled bursts of Aura Deflection.
The stones and dirt clumps being flung back at the speed of bullets and pelting The Boss, making a show of light when they hit his aura, the light bursting from his aura and creating ripples on top of it.
Mr. Arc was fast too, he moved from one position to the next like he was teleporting, Vernal couldn’t track his movements, his sword striking precisely into The Boss’s chest faster than Vernal could see, Vernal only being able to track his movement based on how The Boss was being knocked backed and where his Aura was flashing, and then with one last lightning quick slash The Boss was knocked onto his back, Arthur stomping his foot onto The Boss’s chest, putting his blade on the boys neck.
“Another victory for me, son,” Arthur said, smirking. “If you had less aura than you did, I could take your head off.”
Jaune pouted, struggling fiercely under his fathers boot, his own strength only barely lifting his father’s foot. Showing off the man’s immense strength as he barely budged, the strength of a real Hunter, and despite how much strength his son had, it didn’t matter if he couldn’t get any leverage to take advantage of it.
“I’ll beat you one day.” The Boss said, red faced and sweating.
“Yes, I’m sure you will.” Mr. Arc smiled. “But, first you got to land a hit on me.”
Vernal wasn’t sure if that was normal father-son conversation, but her definition of normal had long since been warped.
Arthur took his foot off his son and pulled him up. “Good for another spar, son?”
The blonde boy nodded, and then tried to pull his father into a headbutt, but Arthur didn’t budge and then flipped The Boss over his shoulder into the earth.
Vernal would watch late into the evening as the father-son sparred, taking notes mentally on what worked against The Boss for when she’d have to spar with her boss again. He may be her boss, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t give it her all in trying to surpass him, he deserved nothing less than a subordinate who was useful.
The Arcs told her she was priceless, but the only way Vernal knew that she had value was by proving it, and the only way she could was by fighting.
------
Three Months later.
-----
Three Arcs step off of a bullhead, all immediately throwing up their lunches on the ground.
“The family curse, haaah, it strikes again.” Arthur said, being the first one to recover.
“That it does, that it does father.” A platinum blonde who was nearly as tall as her father said putting her hand on her father’s shoulder for support.
The father and daughter watched as Jaune continued to puke his guts out all over the ground, the curse was particularly bad on the youngest, and it truly was a curse, as neither aura manipulation, meditation, or medication helped in the slightest. It was as though the sky’s and heaven’s had a grudge against the Arcs.
Eventually though, they all recovered.
Arthur grabbed both children by the shoulder. “Alright, I trust you two to remember, why, I brought you two with me on a mission.”
The platinum blonde nodded. “You said, I needed more field experience, especially in foreign environments and learning in person was worth more per hour than a day in class could ever teach…. also I forgot father’s day and this is my way of making up for it.”
“That’s right, Gris.” Arthur said with a smug smile.
Gris looked at her only brother. “Why’s he here?” Pointing at the blonde boy next to her.
Arthur smiled nervously. “Because, if neither of us is home to watch him, we won’t have a home when we get back.”
Jaune was fast asleep on his feet, a small stream of drool leaking from his mouth, and loudly snoring.
Arthur pulled his son into his arms, holding him securely and tossing Gris the boy’s luggage.
Gris nodded. “That is a fair point, but why not take his groupies too?”
“Because, I already have enough to worry about with Jaune, who is more than likely going to put someone else in our family by force before we head home, and those two are enough trouble by themselves and I don’t want them picking fights or causing trouble on a mission. Your mom, with her semblance, can handle them no problem, even less so with Vernal.”
“Fair enough, let's get going… What’s it called again?” Gris said with a tilt of the head.
Arthur hummed. “I think it’s called Kuroyuri, apparently rumors of an abnormal grimm have appeared. Something more than the local Hunter can handle.”
===
It had taken a couple hours of walking, through exotic forests and mountainous trails, but the Arc trio managed to make it to Kuroyuri a little after lunch. The Arc boy still sound asleep during the trip, being swapped between his father and elder sister as the situation demand, even when being carried up sheer cliffs, when they were fording through shallow rivers, or the many fights between the Grimm, Bandits, and Aura Animals on the way to Kuroyuri, nothing of which way enough to prompt his Aura sense that there was enough danger to wake him up.
The Father and Daughter duo were thoroughly famished, and immediately beelined it to the first restaurant they could see, ending up running over to have lunch at a local tea house, Kazehana or something to that effect, The Arc duo were many things, linguist is not one of them.
The Arc’s sudden entrance to the Tea-house was quite sudden, the waitress quite shocked to see two hunters and a sleeping child look at her with a terrifying hungry expression. Needless to say they were quickly seated and served.
Arthur and Gris finished their meal, several plates of local noodles, boar meat, and some local plants, letting out a satisfied groan of fullness, looking up while stretching and Arthur making eye contact with one Li Ren, the local hunter who requested a seasoned Huntsman investigate the rumors of an abnormal grimm.
There was a moment of eye contact, Arthur’s mind slowly grinding out the details, before realization sets in. His eyes widen and waves the man over with highly animated gestures, pointing down at an empty seat on the floor.
Li Ren stoically processed the actions before calmly making his way over to the table, taking the empty seat. In a matter of moments they were sitting, discussing the details of the contracts, over a cup of steaming tea, while Gris watched and observed, noting important details her father might miss and studying how her father negotiated and asked questions, weaning information out.
“So how long ago was this Grimm sighted?”
“Two or three months ago, It was sighted in the aftermath of a fallen village to the southeast with a horde of Grimm making its way out of the ruins.”
“Hmm, any possible thoughts on it’s species or is it a aberrant?”
“I have talked with those who have observed it from closer, they have described it as being around fifteen meters tall, with a equine bottom half, resembling a fully formed Uma Sama and Elder Imp like grimm’s torso growing from it’s mid back, the sight being quite… disturbing, it seems quite old having many battle scars and weapons stuck inside of it…. I do not know of any species it might belong too, but its too familiar to be a aberrant, Sir Huntsman.”
Arthur frowned, wrinkles creasing his forehead. “This is quite concerning, have you reported this to Haven?”
Li Ren scowled. “We of Kuroyuri, founded it in an attempt to escape Mistrals… less than savory nature, this did not make many friends or allies when we left, any attempts to have contacted Haven have been met with silence.”
“I’ll contact Beacon when I return, this behavior is unethical and unbecoming of a Huntsman institution.” Arthur said, his facing taking on a dark and stormy expression.
The talks between the two men then fade into the background as two children walk into the establishment, an orange hair girl and a black haired boy walk in, only to see their father talking with a blonde headed man, the orange hair girl sighs then spotting a sleeping blonde next to him her father and zips over to him and starts poking his cheek.
Ren sighs and goes to try and stop her from causing trouble, only for the blonde boy to casually wake up and slap her across the room and outside into the street.
The room goes silent in shock, as Jaune rises up yawning, Ren just stands there horrified, Arthur, Gris and Li all looking shocked for different reasons.
‘Did he do it? Did my son just kill a girl by accident?’
‘If he killed that girl, that means we’re probably going to have to waive the fee, and it’ll probably go on Jaune’s record,’
‘Damn-it Nora, how many times do I have to tell you to keep your hands to yourself!?’
Ren though, while horrified, was also quite awed. Nora was the strongest kid in town, he had never even seen her winded outside of training with dad, and she hit him hard enough to break his aura in just two to three hits, and it took him dozens of hits to just bring her down.
This blonde boy just socked her out of the room!
Nora laid on her back, a manic smile on her face. A tingly numb feeling all across her body, with some kind of scratchy feeling beneath the numbness. Awesome. Her aura never felt so low before, outside of Papa Ren fighting her in training. Nora’s aura felt like it was more than half gone!
Nora's smile didn’t fade as she contemplated the sheer strength behind, it didn’t just knock her around, it sent her flying! How far could he make her fly?
“Jaune,” Arthur said to his son. “Please go make sure she’s alive?”
Jaune yawns, and rubs his eyes. “Who? Did I hit someone?”
“Yes.”
He nods “Ok.” Then he walks to the person with a damaged aura signature outside.
Nora looks at the boy in awe, as he looks down at her. He knees down and puts a hand on her cheek where he hit her. “Pain pain, go away.” Then a surge of light overtakes Nora, and her aura is completely restored and then some.
“Who are you!” Nora says, grabbing Jaune by the shoulders and putting her faces really close to his making intense eye contact.
“I’m Jaune.” The boy says pushing her away, her breath smelled like syrup, and it was making him hungry.
“I’m Nora and this is my brother Ren!” She said dragging the boy over to her brother who still was processing the fact that his sister had just got slapped out of a building.
Jaune thought they didn’t look anything alike, but then thought about his new adopted sisters. Realizing that Nora must have adopted Ren, he nodded.
“Oh cool, he’s like my sisters.”
Nora nodded. “Yeahs my brother, but not my brother-brother, but we’re blood-brother and sister, because we cut our hands and shook hands!”
Jaune’s eyes widen, and made note of what to do when he got home. He had to make sure his sister were has much of his sisters as possible.
“You’re really strong! Want to be friends? Wait, wait, I have a better idea, you want to be me and Ren’s new blood brother?”
“Sure!” Jaune didn’t really have any friends outside his family, he looked at Ren. “Can we be friends too? I mean blood-brother?”
Who needs friends when you have family!
Ren looked at his feet nervously, the idea of cutting his hand again didn’t appeal to him, but nodded anyway. Nora hugged them both. “That’s his way of saying, yes!”
The three adults looked at the children in amusement, Li and Arthur sharing a knowing look.
“Feel welcome to stay in my home for the duration of your contract.”
“That would be great.”
Gris couldn’t stop smiling at her little brother and his new friends. “They're so cute!” Taking out her scroll and snatching several photos as Jaune and Nora, plus Ren got to know each other.
Only for the adults to scream once Nora brought out the knife and tried to cut their hands.
------
After the knife incident, and Nora finding out she couldn’t open Jaune’s hand no matter how hard she tried, they finally managed to settle down.
An Ren immediately took a shine to her children’s new friend and easily welcomed the Arcs into her home. Despite the fact the two other Arcs and her husband were scarcely in the house as they went out looking for the abnormal Grimm. Taking the time to spoil Jaune and her children, eventually managing to slip them all into matching Yukuta before letting them slip out to play for the afternoon.
Arthur and Li took several days to locate the Grimm, traveling around Kuroyuri looking for tracks and trails to indicate where it was, Gris traveling on the further outskirts acting as a scout.
During that time Jaune had spent all his time playing with Nora and Ren, investigating all over town, now that they’re dads were gone they were going to explore a mountain near the town.
“Be careful in the mountains. Also don’t stray too far into the forest or the lord of the mountain will eat you!” The old man said as Jaune walked into the forest, Nora and Ren followed him.
Ren and Nora followed behind Jaune, grabbing his long kimono sleeves. The kimono was something his eldest sister and Mrs. Ren and the Village girls managed to force on him in his sleep last night.
“What’s the lord of the mountain?” Jaune said, swinging his practice sword in front of him crushing through the brush and tearing up anything in front of him, but also creating a cool breeze behind him that Nora and Ren took advantage of.
Nora laughed. “It’s just a stupid folktale, beside I heard there’s really tasty peaches out in the forest.”
Ren sighed, tugging on Jaune’s sleeves. “Actually it’s a tale about a dangerous animal that lived on the Mountain centuries ago, long ago a there a enormous wild boar that lived on the mountain, the king of a nearby city wanted to take the mountain, but no matter how many solider he sent none ever came back, so the king himself went, and came back wounded, he declared no man may ever rule over the mountain, as it had its own Lord. The Lord of the Mountain.
An electric look went through Jaune’s eyes, “Awesome, do you think we can find it?”
Ren looked nervous though. ‘This isn’t going to end well…’
A couple hours passed, as the trio totally wandered around the mountain before somehow ending up at the top of the mountain, which instead of peak it hosted a large depression that sunk several dozen feet into the width of the mountains top, home to only wild grass, boulders, some bushes, a large grove of peach trees.
Nora elbows Jaune, smirking. “See I told you there were peaches at the top.”
Jaune snorts. “Yeah, but you haven’t proven that they were tasty yet!”
Nora frowns. “Fine, I’ll race you over there, and I’ll show you how tasty they are!”
“Fine!” Jaune said as he sprinted towards the peach trees, with Nora hot on his trail.
Ren however, felt quite nervous, as something was making his Aura sense crawl. This place was weird to him. He walked around, trying to find the source of the weirdness here.
He wadded through the waist high grass, noting the grass that had some large passage through it that neither Jaune or Nora caused. Nature trails all over the top.
Then he found it as he walked over to the grove.
Skulls and bones, all over the ground, shattered into pieces and fragments, and the roots were all over them. The tree had been eating the bones.
Ren felt his blood turn cold, as he noticed the rusted and shattered weapons all over the top now that he looked closely.
He quickly looked around for Jaune and Nora, seeing them eating peaches from the tree in the center. Despite how happy they were, they had to leave now.
Calmly as he could, somehow managing to make himself feel numb, the world taking on a slightly muted color, he walked over only to feel the ground shake behind him. Dust and dirt falling behind him, and the warm breath of air on his neck, on the high mountain top. His calm disappeared.
“Jaune! Nora! This is the Lord of the Mountain’s lair!”
A scream from behind him, pulled Jaune and Nora out from their fun to see Ren on the ground before a huge boar.
Jaune and Nora stood in awe of it for a moment, before Nora realized the danger and ran to protect Ren, Jaune close behind her.
However, he couldn’t help but be awestruck by the big piggy behind Ren that was absolutely leaking aura, it almost had as much as his dad did!
It was also so cool looking! It’s fur was black and thick and hairy! Like it was made of black iron. With one blood red eye and one milky one with a scar going over it. It had a bunch of scar actually, over its sides and on its neck. Jaune bet it fought a bunch of strong guys and piggies too. And it’s tusks were ginormous! Like instead of growing tusks it grew two clay-mores instead!
Jaune put his hand under his chin. Could he tame it? Only for him to scowl as the foul smell of the boar fell over to him. ‘It needs a bath. Otherwise, mom won’t let me keep him.’
“SQUUUUUEEEELLL!!!” The Lord of the Mountain bellowed at the three children who invaded it’s lair as it stomped the ground and got ready to charge.
Only for it to take notice of Jaune, it’s eyes further narrowed in rage, it was the one who had been stinking up it’s mountain with his aura, now dared come into its home! The Lord of the mountain bellowed out of rage and challenged the boy in front of it, then charged forward intent on brutalizing the boy who dared leaked it’s smelly aura all over his mountain. The one who dared to wake him with his offensive smell. It’s beady eye then saw the discarded peach pits on the ground.
It snorted in pure wrath, they dared to eat it’s sacred peach! The one’s that granted The Lord his longevity?! He would grind their bones into dust for his grove and rend their flesh off their muscle and have the rain’s dance with their blood!
The pitch black boar’s singular working eye glowed with a diabolical spirit, as then blood-crimson lightning sparked over it’s black fur, as it galloped it legs forward in blinding speed, going ahead like a black missile, barreling at the seven year old with all the force of a runaway train. Jaune in a split second decision grabbed Ren and Nora, tossing them into some nearby bushes as he was hit hard enough to be sent flying away, the impact turning making the sky around them shake, the light exploding around them nearly blinding them as Jaune disappeared.
Nora and Lie Ren watch in horror, shivering silently as the boy they just befriended, their new brother flew into the mountainside impacting it with a blood-chilling crunch. The pair’s eyes went wide as they went into shock.
The rock-face shook, and the pig squealed in triumph as Jaune seemed to have been defeated.
“That was mean mister piggy, I don’t like mean people.” Jaune walked out from the dust and shattered rocks falling around him surrounding his impact sight, the rocks bouncing off his aura, and looking no worse for wear, if anything he looked incredibly angry.
His golden aura burned around him causing his clothes to float on etheric currents. The boar snorted at him and bellowed again, unimpressed, in it’s long, long life, it had defeated many opponents, from aura users, to soldiers and bandits, to warriors and huntsmen, and even centuries ago the king of this valley and his army, what was one child to his many fallen foes?
The Lord of the Mountain snorted again, summoning it’s lightning to coat him, and then shot it at the insolent child.
Jaune saw it all though, the sneer in the animals eyes, and the hostility riding it’s aura, and the deathly intent in the creature's semblance. It was all too easy to read it and step aside from where the red lightning hit next to him.
With a flourish Jaune then unsheathes his training sword holding it defensively, ready to fight the old boar.
The Lord of Mountain’s tusks glimmered menacingly in the evening light.
Nora and Ren held their breaths hoping not to give away their positions.
Clank! Klink! Crack!
The boar charged into Jaune, with Jaune blocking the beast with the flat of his sword, being pushed back several feet. The boar lashing out with it hooves that almost knocked Jaune flat before deflecting the blow, it’s tusks swiping at him only to be ducked under, and finally it tried to bite him in half, only for Jaune to hit’s teeth with his sword in a silver flash.
Bzzzzt!
The boar’s fur began to stick up on end as currents of electricity gathered across its body, collecting between its tusks briefly, then exploded in a blast of lightning at Jaune.
Jaune’s eyes went wide as a column wide blast of lightning was shot at him knocking him onto his back spasming, mere feet from Nora and Ren.
The boar saw an opening and charged at him coated in auric lightning power, Nora saw it all in slow-motion, Ren’s heart seized with fear and tried to stop Nora, but she moved faster than she ever moved before grabbed Jaune to pull him out of the way, the boar only grazing him, but still blasting bolts of electricity as it brushed them, a wayward zap hit Nora, knocking her onto her back, Ren quickly running to her side as his sister was laid out on the ground smoke drifting off of her.
The boar gave a evil look at the children as it turn around and charged at them, only for the boar to be punched in the nose before it could run them over. The huge animal reeling back, as it was knocked back, Jaune then rose up, smoke rising off of him, then he jumped up and socked it. Anger in his eyes, as he grabbed the blade of his sword and hit the boar in it’s head with the hilt, sending it rolling across the ground and into the trees, destroying several in the process, Jaune then chasing fast behind it.
As the Lord of the Mountain and Jaune continued to fight, Ren was trying his best to tend to Nora, only he couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her as she kept laughing. “It tickles Ren! It Tickles!” Then jumping up onto her feet, grabbing the largest branch see could find then running at Jaune and the Lord of the Mountain.
The Lord of the Mountain and Jaune had fought from the forest line back into it’s den, leaving a trail of destruction and broken rocks behind them, the boar discharging lightning at him and Jaune summoning orbs of Aura to take the blows instead of him, several bright aura orbs orbiting around him at high speeds.
Lightning collects on the boar again, making the boar too bright to look at, wayward bolt striking everywhere blasting Nora back again, as it disappears behind a veil of electricity, then faster than the children’s eyes could follow, the boar flashes out towards Jaune in a series of brutal hits, only for him to deflect every blow in a shining silver strikes, with is Aura taking the blows he couldn’t deflect.
Then in a matter of moments the fighters became invisible, until an ear-splitting shriek cut the air in two, as a shock-wave cut the air in two, razor sharp winds shearing across the air, cutting all the around in a twenty foot circle in half.
The Lord of the Mountain was breathing heavily, blood-seeping from it’s mouth and nose, mighty as it was, boar weren’t built for this kind of fighting, while Jaune staggered around erratically as electricity stilled flashed over him, his hair standing on end and smoke waffering off of him. Jaune with as much aura as he has, was just as vulnerable to electricity as any aura-user, especially to one such as the Lord of the Mountain, who had honed it’s semblance in many battles, he could heal yes, but the effects on the body were noticeable and quite damaging.
The fighters met eyes with each other, a brief contact, but one that conveyed the tangible amount of respect they had for another.
The Lord of the Mountain scraped the ground with it’s hooves, gathering more of it’s semblance than it had ever before, collecting the red power into its prized tusks, turning them into glowing red and white sabers of energy that zapped with lightning around them.
Jaune held his sword with both hands in low stance, his sword’s tip pointing at the ground behind him, four aura orbs floating around him then one after the other they circled around the blade faster and smaller, till the blade was obscure in white and gold colors.
The two fighters charged, they met, they clashed.
All was still, all was silent, they froze meeting like a still frame image, the small blonde boy wielding an equally small sword meeting a building sized boar in a charge, clashing together, it would look comical if not for the serious look on boys face and the obvious power being thrown around, and the wrecked environment around them.
The clash held for a scarce moment, then the world caught up, as light overtook the senses, followed by an all encompassing boom that echoed across the providence like thunder, that nearly deafened Ren and Nora. Finally was the bone-cracking snap, as the victor was decided.
For a brief moment Jaune and The Lord of the Mountain became visible, the sword biting into the fangs, the rotating sheath of aura diverting the condensed semblance back into lightning bolts around Jaune digging a foot deep furrow for tens of yards behind him. Then,
KA-CRACK!
As the Lord of the Mountain’s tusks were broken in two. The two ivory natural weapons spun in the air and then stabbed into the earth, still crackling with its power, and blood leaking at the base of the shattered ivory.
The Lord of the Mountain thrashed about wildly as it’s mind was overloaded with pain and phantom sensations.
Jaune frowned sadly at it. His dad’s voice then echoed in his head. ‘Never disrespect your opponent with mercy if they come to kill you, give them the warrior’s end. Its the end they deserve.’
Ren and Nora could only watch in awe as Jaune then ran at the Lord of the Mountain, stopping it’s wildly flailing with a running sideswipe at it’s head, knocking it onto its side. Quickly he grabbed a broken tusk holding it firmly, holding the beast still he aligned his blunt sword with it’s eye with a lightning quick motion he plunged his sword, followed by his entire arm, and then part of his shoulder deep into through its eye into it’s head. Completely obliterating it’s brain, and the top of its spine.
In an instant, he broke its aura, cutting’s life away in one ending move.
The beast shutters weakly in pain, once, twice, and then never again.
Jaune frowns as he puts his foot against the head and kicks off, pulling his arm out in a spray of gore, showering the forest floor in red, pink and grey. He then swipes his sword through the air, in an attempt to remove the boar viscera off the blunt sword.
Nora and Ren looked on at Jaune, unable to take their eyes off of him. HIs movements were like nothing they had ever seen, powerful, without mercy, terrifying, and awe-inspiring. They fell to their knees without hesitation, bowing before the great one before them.
“Teach me, oh great one!” Nora said, suddenly latching onto Jaune’s leg. “Show me the way, so that I might break enemies! Those that would be unworthy of you!”
Ren hugged Jaune’s waist. “Show me the ways to manhood, Great Master!” Looked up at him. “Allow this one to have the power to serve you, and protect those I care for.”
With a casual pat to their heads. “Sure, you’re my brother and sister, right?” He said, with a bright smile and face dripping with blood.
Ren and Nora could only hug tighter in excitement, this would be the beginning of a long, long, and deep bond.
--------
It had taken most of a day to get to the creature’s lair, but it was well worth it.
Arthur had Gris play interception, leaving her to fight any Grimm that tried to attack Arthur and Li as they fought the Nuckaleeve as they found it was called.
Gris watched in amazement, as she finished the last of the fodder grimm, cutting a deathstalker in half with her zweihander, as her father and Mr. Li Ren fought the Nuckaleeve.
While Li Ren did not have much power behind strikes, he could shoot dozens of arrows near instantly, laced with some type of dust or another, and could easily dodge the blows that the Nuckaleeve tried to hit him with.
Her father just kept proving why he was the patriarch of the house, as he matched the monster blow for blow, overpowering it and laying it back as Li Ren froze, burned, and electrocuted it’s limb.
Till Arthur finally knocked it to the ground and sawed off the horse like head off the abomination as Li sniped the head off the top of the thing they called a Nuckaleeve.
Arthur stretched as he popped his body. “What a work out, haven’t fought something that strong in years, even if it was a little disappointing.”
“A little much for me,” Li said, taking a seat. “I would prefer it if I never had to see something like this ever again.”
Arthur shrugs. “To each their own,” He then smiles at the man. “How does it feel to longer have that monster hanging over your head?”
Li gave a wide smile. “Like a boulder has been lifted from my shoulders, ah, it feels like I just regained ten years of my life back. My Ren and Nora, will now be able to grow up in relative peace, hopefully.”
Arthur gave him a pat on the back, nearly knocking the man onto his face. “They will grow up in peace, if you ever have any other trouble, do not hesitate to call the Arcs.”
Li’s eyes started to water, but he quickly rubbed them away. “Then, I suppose there is one thing I have concerns about, in your time here in Kuroyuri, have you heard of the Lord of the Mountain?”
--------
Arthur couldn’t be prouder of his son if he tried as he lugged a two story tall boar through the town square whilst that little girl Nora shouted out a story that would probably fit right in with a Mistralwood movie, the boy Ren giving out details to smooth the story along.
“The Lord is dead, the Lord of the Mountain has died!” An old man shouted.
“It was real?”
“I thought for sure, that the old man was full of shit!”
“I’m not that old! I'm forty five, I just smoke a lot!”
“You should really quit, it’s bad for your health.”
“If I wanted your opinion I’d bloody well ask for it! Anyway the Lord of the Mountain is dead!”
Arthur gave his new friend a sly look. “So, about that problem… I don’t think you need to worry about it.”
Li grabbed his head and shook his head from side to side, a tears of happiness running down his face. “I suppose I do not.”
He rubbed his face dry, then grabbed Arthur by shoulder. “Tonight we party! Kuroyuri is safe again, and these are our champions! Tell the mayor we are celebrating tonight!”
Cheers erupted around the plaza.
--------
The party lasted for several days, as the news made its way around the neighboring villages who went to join and congratulate the Arc’s and the Ren Family.
Positivity at an all time high, fun was had, merriment too, but all good things come to an end.
A Bullhead sat on the outskirts of the village, which was being loaded up with gifts, and some of the remains of the Lord of the Mountain.
Nora and Ren clung fiercely to Jaune, tears running freely down the trios face.
“I don’t want you to leave!” Nora dug onto him tightly
“You’re our brother, don't leave us!” Ren buried his head into the blonde boys shoulder.
Jaune was silent, despite his teary eyes, then he flicked them both on the head. “Quiet! You’re my brother and sister, aren't you going to be strong?”
The two shut up filled with shame.
“This isn’t me leaving, this is me going somewhere else, I’m going to be back and stronger than ever, so don’t think I won’t be back! I would never abandon by brother or sister, so don’t insult me by saying I would leave you forever. So, promise me you two will get stronger, so when I come back we can go on more adventures, promise me!” Jaune looked at them firmly, his eyes still red and puffy.
Nora dried her eyes, and Ren blinked away the tears.
“Yeah! I’m going to get stronger than ever, if you don’t come back I’ll break your legs and bring you back!”
“I’m going to be a real man, Jaune! I’ll show you how strong I can be, so you better come back, or we’ll track you down and bring you back with us for good.”
Jaune looked strong for a moment, then broke down in tears again and hugged them tightly. “I’ll miss you guys.”
Gris looked at them through her scroll, recording the whole thing.
“Couldn’t we, you know, take them with us? We already got the other three groupies, what are two more?”
Arthur swatted her head, “I’m a serial adopter, not serial kidnapper. Anyway, I like Li enough, but not enough to steal his kids, so no, I’m not taking his kids.”
Li gave him a narrowed eye glance. “I’d prefer to keep my children,”
An Ren then carefully puts away a kitchen knife. “I’d cut a bitch, if you tried.” An Ren then smiles. “Anyway, the Arcs are always welcome in our home, you three better come back soon with the rest of your family.”
Arthur gulps, but nods. “Yeah, the misses wouldn’t forgive me if I didn’t take her here. So, will come once I get the children settled.”
Gris smiles. “We’ll be back for the junior Mistral Regional Tournament, Dad wants to put Jaune in it. Thinks it’ll be funny.”
Arthur looks off into the distance. “Damn right it will.”
It took some effort, but they separated the children, and loaded up the Bullhead flying home.
------
The three Arc got off the Bullhead onto the Arc Estate, then promptly emptied their stomachs.
The curse striking hard, the one thing the Arc will never defeat.
Airsickness.

Chapter 9
chapter list / previous / next
Tallpaw crouched low to the ground, minding every one of his paws to step as lightly over the damp heather as he could. Tail down. No swishing. The wind blew the rabbit scent directly into his nose so strong he could taste it on his tongue. He was downwind of his prey and there was no way it had scented him yet. The small brown animal had its back to him and was nibbling at the grass. Tallpaw bunched his hindquarters to ready his dash. The rabbit raised it’s head suddenly but it hadn’t turned around. It’s not looking at me...quickly, before it turns--!
He shot out of the heather and made a leap for the rabbit as it took off sharply to the right just as fast. Tallpaw pushed his legs faster and faster, he was less than a fox length away from his prey and he kept on its trail, his long tail turning to angle his momentum as he pelted after it. But before he could make his leap, the little creature vanished under his paws and was gone down a small burrow in the ground. Tallpaw stuck his head down it, but it was far too small for him.
“Fox-dung!” He growled down the hole, tail lashing angrily.
“That was excellent! You very nearly outran it with how fast you picked up speed!” Dawnstripe called to him as she weaved her way through the heather.
Tallpaw sat with a dejected huff, his ears drooping slightly. “But I missed it again!”
“We’re only practicing technique and form right now, Tallpaw. And you’re improving very fast! But do remember that a rabbit's eye can detect you even when you think you’re behind it. Just because it’s not turned towards you doesn’t mean you don’t have it’s attention.”
I should have known that it was paying attention…Tallpaw thought miserably. He’d hardly caught more than a mouse in his quarter moon of training, but it was the rabbits that made a real impressive hunter. He had to be good enough to catch one on his own soon.
He shook away his self pity and got to his paws “Can we join the dusk hunting patrol? I was even closer this time than I was this morning. I’m sure if I work at it the rest of the day, I could get it right!”
“I admire your enthusiasm to learn, but there’s no need to push yourself so hard. You’ll have more than earned a rest by sundown. Temperance and patience make a skilled hunter as much as endurance and speed.”
“Indeed!” The deep voice made Tallpaw jump, though Dawnstripe, clearly having detected the senior warrior's approach, only calmly dipped her head as Hareflight stepped gracefully forward, his spotted brown pelt blending easily into the grass. “Patience and discipline is of utmost importance for all young warriors to learn.” Hareflight went on in a haughty voice.
Shrewpaw was close at his mentor's heels and flashed a smirk at Tallpaw. “So is being aware of your surroundings,” he snickered quietly.
Shrewpaw must have seen him startle. Tallpaw whapped the other apprentice with his tail and looked away to hide his embarrassment.
“You're right on time as expected, Hareflight.” Dawnstripe said.
“Of course.” Hareflight lifted his chin. “Punctuality is also of the utmost importance. It’s as I always tell my apprentice. What do we say, Shrewpaw?”
Shrewpaw let out a very heavy sigh and droned, “A warrior true always rises precisely when the day is new.” He caught Tallpaw’s gaze and dramatically rolled his eyes. Tallpaw stifled a snicker himself and mouthed ‘wow.’
At Dawnstripe’s signal he sat back up, ears at attention. “Since you’ve been so eager to learn quickly, we’re going to try out battle training. Hareflight’s an experienced warrior and has seen many battles, so listen closely to him.”
Tallpaw perked his ears at attention, but inwardly he wasn’t especially excited. Shrewpaw stretched and flexed his claws, tearing at the grass. Of course the wiry apprentice spent their whole kithood play-fighting, a game Tallpaw had never particularly enjoyed as much. He had over a moon's head start training on top of it, and would surely be eager to show off.
Couldn’t I have done this with Briarpaw the first time? Tallpaw thought glumly.
Hareflight gave them a very long diatribe on the importance of silent communication and how the heart of the clan comes through well coordinated and disciplined teamwork. In order to fight together, they had to know how one another moved. Tallpaw couldn’t tell whether he or Shrewpaw were more bored. It was astounding the way Hareflight had of making things that should be interesting sound so dreadfully dull.
Dawnstripe nudged Tallpaw gently and he tried very hard to pretend he hadn’t been spacing out looking at the clouds for most of the explanation. “Remember, today is about practicing technique. It’s alright if you don’t come out on top.”
Hareflight looked at the two apprentices through narrowed eyes. “Dawnstripe and I will be watching you closely, so keep your senses and wits about you, you must take this seriously. No futzing about!”
“But don’t feel nervous either. It’s not an assessment, we’re here to learn.” Dawnstripe added hastily.
“But certainly don’t think that means you shouldn’t take it as seriously as an assessment. I, personally, will be taking careful note of your missteps.”
“Yes, mentor.” Tallpaw and Shrewpaw said in unison.
“Now enough talking, there’s no better teacher than experience, as I always say!” Hareflight called.
If only he could have said that before talking for half the morning! Tallpaw thought as both apprentices positioned themselves. As he and Shrewpaw began to circle each other, Tallpaw had to admit to himself that fighting hadn’t been a part of warrior training he’d dwelled on much. The idea of plunging his claws into another cat made him wince. But of course it was only training, and their claws were to stay safely sheathed. I can do this, how hard can it be? he thought.
Unfortunately that confidence left him rather quickly. Shrewpaw feigned to the left and Tallpaw only barely managed to dodge his paw swipes. Momentarily he was unsure how to go about this, overly concerned about hurting his attacker. Pretend he’s an enemy warrior! But that didn’t help much either. Tallpaw kept blocking, swiping his strikes to the side and leaping nimbly out of range. He heard Dawnstripe encourage him to strike back, but his first attempt was far too clumsy and hesitant. Before he knew it, Shrewpaw ducked his blow with ease and darted under Tallpaw, tripping him as his gangly limbs got tangled and he face planted into the dirt.
“You’re fighting like a cornered rabbit!” Shrewpaw said, “Come on, just hit me!”
“My apprentice is right, you are far too hesitant. Momentary distractions will land you in trouble in a real battle.” Hareflight called out. Turning to Dawnstripe, he added “perhaps we should practice team fighting first. It’s an important skill for WindClan as other clan cats often have an advantage of brute strength. So, Tallpaw and Shrewpaw, you will work together and I will act as your enemy. Keep track of each other, follow your partner's lead, if Shrewpaw aims for one area, keep your target distracted from the other side. If you work together, you can take down an enemy much bigger than yourself. The most important thing is to keep track of your battle partner.” He stared hard at the two apprentices. “And remember, a cornered warrior alone is a dead warrior.”
“Yeah, so don’t let me die, flea-brain.” Shrewpaw said.
Alright no pressure, Tallpaw thought.
As they got into position to act as if they were ambushing the senior warrior from the long grass cover, Shrewpaw hissed in Tallpaw’s ear, “Whoever knocks him down first gets to have the other do their chores tomorrow,”
“Do you think he count’s competing as ‘futzing about?’” Tallpaw whispered.
Shrewpaw’s eyes gleamed. “Not if he doesn’t notice.”
Tallpaw bared his teeth. You’re on, he signaled silently. If he could show up Shrewpaw, maybe it would make some of his stress and exhaustion worth it. And better still, if he was good at this, Sandstone wouldn’t have to worry about him falling behind. Maybe it didn’t matter if Shrewpaw had more practice. He was also overly arrogant, and that was always a weak point.
The first strike didn’t go well for either of them. Shrewpaw leaped at Hareflight’s back and Tallpaw pounced at his side.
Hareflight shook them off with surprising nimbleness for a warrior his age. “Work as one unit, not two!”
Tallpaw tried to get around him so they could leap on from either side, but Hareflight ducked out of the way and Tallpaw went crashing into Shrewpaw. The momentum sent them both tumbling down the hill and into a bracken patch.
When they hit the bracken, something went streaking out the other side. A small rabbit had been hidden out in the open, staying stalk still in a bid to not be seen until they’d scared it into running. The two apprentices barely glanced at each other for half a second before ingrained hunter instinct took over, prompting them to charge after the fleeing prey. No way was Tallpaw going to let this opportunity get away. And if I get this, it will make up for earlier!
The rabbit bounded ahead and turned sharply, trying to throw them off, but the apprentices were neck and neck on its tail.
“Better pick up the pace, Wormpaw.” Shrewpaw huffed between breaths as he started pulling ahead of Tallpaw. Tallpaw didn’t respond as he pushed his legs faster. I will not let him get this! His frustration added an extra burst of speed to his stride. He was so focused on his prey he barely heard Dawnstripe’s warning yowl behind him.
“Tallpaw, stop!”
But it’s so close, just a bit further! The rabbit's scent was so strong he could taste its fear scent against the roof of his mouth. Suddenly, another scent hit him so hard he almost gagged on it. Cat scent, and not ones he recognized. He heard Shrewpaw cry out in alarm and screech to a halt so fast Tallpaw barreled into him and the two toms toppled over each other into the mud. The rabbit had dipped out of sight. Tallpaw spat a clump of dirt from his mouth.
“That was quite an impressive tumble,” A raspy voice purred from somewhere above Tallpaw’s head. “Seems WindClan’s young aren’t as graceful as they used to be.”
Tallpaw gasped and sprang to his paws with a start to meet a pair of cold slitted amber eyes and a mocking toothy grin surrounded by messy fox-red fur. Three shadowy feline shapes sat side by side just under the shadow of the Thunderpath tunnel. Tallpaw hadn’t realized they’d run so close to the marshy grass under the treeline and now were right up against the path that separated their territory from ShadowClan’s.
“If that’s how WindClan is hunting now, it’s a wonder they haven’t gotten even scrawnier than they already are.” hissed another.
Tallpaw suddenly felt as if he’d lost his voice, but Shrewpaw hadn’t. The bristling tom scrambled to his paws and stepped in front of Tallpaw, the dark brown fur along his back spiking as he hissed back, “who asked you!? You’re the ones who messed us up!”
The ShadowClan cat growled and moved to step closer but froze in place as Dawnstripe and Hareflight leapt through the bushes with a warning snarl and moved to stand beside their apprentices.
“It would be very unwise of you to take another step further.” Hareflight warned.
“You’re beyond your border. Turn back.” Dawnstripe added.
With his eyes adjusted to the darkness, Tallpaw could make out the figures better. They reeked of the scent Tallpaw often caught wafting under the thunderpath, a mixture of sour rotting plants and peat, and strangely reminiscent of a rancid decaying snake body he’d stumbled across once. The two taller forms were no bigger than Dawnstripe or Hareflight. They looked lean with messy unkempt pelts and thin curved claws that scratched at the wet stone under their paws. Sharp muzzles and wide eyes, pale and strangely hungry looking. Tallpaw had never seen an angry fox before, but he imagined they looked something like this. The one who’d insulted them was a wiry gray flecked molly with cold yellow eyes, likely apprentice-aged as the smallest of the three. She stood beside the warriors, tail swishing in excited agitation and claws flexing as if waiting eagerly for a chance to use them as she eyed the WindClan apprentices. Tallpaw felt a defensive growl rise in his throat, and he hoped his fear scent wasn’t noticeable.
Beside the fox-red tom sat a tall dusky gray-brown molly, her fur was smooth and her stance unaggressive as she cooly replied, “I apologize for the rudeness of our apprentice. They are merely my escorts. We’ve gone beyond no border. Neither of us mark inside the Thunderpath tunnel.”
“There is no reason to go through the tunnel unless a cat is looking for trouble.” Hareflight said. For once, Tallpaw was grateful the senior warrior was around, his unwavering stoicism gave him a shred of confidence.
“Perhaps. But I am ShadowClan’s messenger.” She replied, and she cast her gaze down to Shrewpaw who looked like he was preparing to leap any moment when given command, “And you’ve no grounds to attack me.”
Hareflight stepped in front of his apprentice, ignoring his annoyed growl, and said, “I know who you are, Deerstep. If you have something to say, then get on with it, so you can stop standing around the outskirts of our land.”
“That may change very soon,” said the red tom, barring his long teeth in a grin. “You know, you’re standing on a marshy woodland that your clan doesn’t put to good use.”
“And that doesn’t really belong to you!” cut in the gray flecked molly.
“Doesn’t belong to us? This woodland has been part of WindClan territory for seasons!” Dawnstripe hissed. “If you’re planning on just waltzing onto our land when you see fit, you’re more hare-brained than you look.”
“Please be polite Ashpaw,” purred the messenger. “You know messenger escorts don’t go on raids. There’s no clan law against them looking, is there? That’s all we’ve done. We have no quarrel with you today. I’ve only come to say our clans will have matters to address at the next gathering, that is all. You may inform your leader that Cedarstar wishes to discuss land negotiations, as we have done in the past. Good hunting to you.” She dipped her head and the three cats turned and padded silently into the dark tunnel back to the shadowy woods beyond.
Shrewpaw arched his back and looked as if he wanted to take a swipe at the ShadowClan cat as she turned, but Hareflight put a large paw in front of him and gave him a stern look. “If they are part of the messenger's escort party, we cannot attack without direct provocation, Shrewpaw. WindClan does not take the first swipe, especially not from behind. Besides, Tallpaw has not had enough training for a real battle today.”
Tallpaw flattened his ears indignantly. I’m not a kitten! I could have used my instincts...
“So? We three could have taken them!” Shrewpaw argued. “They were purposely trying to make us angry for no reason!”
“Exactly,” said Dawnstripe. “ShadowClan always tries to invite the first hit so they have a justified cause to hit back. At least they are finally taking an upfront approach instead of sneaking around and making us nervous. I don’t know what that cat was trying to imply about territory negotiations, but it can’t be anything good.”
“I’m afraid I may have an idea of what they were referring to,” Hareflight said, and then added under his breath, “but why in StarClan anyone would care to bring it up now, I haven’t the slightest idea.” He turned back to the apprentices. “And as for you two running off like that, I’m very disappointed. You have the restraint and attention span of a kitten chasing a feather!”
“Sorry,” Tallpaw ducked his head. “It’s just, the rabbit was right there and I thought I could get it quickly.”
“Yeah, you can’t just put a rabbit in front of me and not expect me to chase after it! It’s not my fault it ran at the border. I would have got it if those fox-breaths hadn’t gotten in the way.” Shrewpaw argued.
“We’re going to have to have a long talk about your self control,” Hareflight sighed. Guiding a still bristling Shrewpaw away with his tail, he called back to Dawnstripe, “But first we’d better get back to camp, Heatherstar will want to know about this. I’m afraid the training session will have to be put off for a bit.”
