Edward Bond’s on how Theatre was sold to the banker

I  saw Edward Bond's BINGO in 2012 (the Chichester festival production, at the Young Vic, with Patrick Stewart) and I thought Bond would have hated it... which  was weird. I love Edward Bond's theatre, it has a feeling level, it's political  and it makes theatre feel useful. This production is totally apolitical and did  not reach me at all. Then, I found the following note on Edward Bond's personal  website, and it all made sense. I decided to share it : Edward  Bond wrote this programme note for the production of “Bingo: scenes of death and  money” by the Chichester Festival Theatre in April 2010. The Festival Director  refused to publish it . Without informing the author another note was  commissioned and published. When the production transferred to the London Young  Vic in February 2012 the programme had no note in it.   When  I wrote Bingo thirty years ago its argument was somewhat theoretical. It has  since become eerily relevant. The great icon of Western culture signs a piece of  paper for a wealthy banker called Combe. The consequences spread like ripples of  iron-chains across the surface of a pool. Four hundred years later Combe has  become so powerful he can gamble with our lives and corrupt our culture. Every word  we speak echoes with cash. The symptom of any drug addict is the neglect of  social responsibility – and everything in our society works like a drug. We  begin to fumble through life in a chaotic haze of virtual reality. The  chaos is held together and given some shred of meaning by another product: the  Cult of Celebrity. Celebrities are role models for success in the market. They  stand for nothing but their own bank balances and that impoverishes the rest of  us. People  want celebrities to live their lives for them so that they can share the  excitement at a distance. But the trivial pronouncements, fake affairs, phoney  bust-ups and pathetic breakdowns soon pall. People learn that celebrity life is  hollower than their own. Its then that people start asking for suffering, for  real pain – and the market provides it. It turns the Cult of Celebrity into the  Cult of Celebrity Death. This isnt new – ancient societies kept themselves alive by ritual  sacrifice. But at least their victims gave their society blood – our dead celebs  give us nothing but their emptiness. Its all they have to give. Shakespeare  was not a celeb. While alive he seems to have been known only to some small  professional circles. In the play I treat him as one of his own characters. In  truth I do not know how he died. In the play he dies thus: so that the world should bear one less  stain. . Democracy  and drama were created together at the same time to serve the same purpose. The  state of a democracy depends on its drama, which is its collective  self-consciousness and unconsciousness. If it uses its power properly, drama  combines gossip and the highest rhetoric to make the mysteries of human  existence less dark and our future more sure. And even now it could still do it.  Its not yet handed over to the worst pressures of the market place. But instead  more and more theatres become shop windows without even a shop behind them. They  are enemies of democracy, part of the desolation from which our children face  the dangers this century promises them. If  Shakespeare entered our theatre now he would commit suicide.

For a while, everything has felt wrong. Everything still kinda feels wrong, but we’re moving more towards normalization now. Kinda like a stanky smell in the room that people notice when they first encounter it, but after being around it for a while, they don’t notice it anymore. But, things are still very wrong. 

And people are on edge!  - as well they should be.

Every gesture, every word, every post, someone can find a reason to say that your attention towards what's going on in our country right now is insufficient and or offensive:

For every inspirational word, there are people who want to stay angry and aren't ready for that type of talk (which is valid). For every negative word towards the police and their life time of brutality, there are cops or families and friends of cops who are up in their feelings about it. 

For any post that is humorous  (not about life destroyed, of course) there are people who will want to dictate when you're allowed to laugh again. 

One must be careful of any post not in tune with certain sensibilities to what's going on right now, because people are quick to call you tone deaf. So, keep the posts concerning your cute kids, your less than bright pets (or vice versa), and your weight loss selfies to a minimum.

For every word about other serious stuff (like COVID-19), people don't want to pay attention (if only the crappiness of life only hit us in one area at a time) For any post about what you're doing to help the cause (BLM), people will say that you're not doing enough (and maybe they’re right).

If you say nothing, people will judge you. Even when we were posting black boxes, people were still divided on THAT.

The Joker caused chaos in Gotham City (though honestly, that city was already chaotic). Decisions had to be made, and if the people on the boats didn't decide which boat of the two would blow up, the Joker would step in and make things horrible for everyone.

It feels like that right now... TENSE. Everyone seems to be part of a group, you're trying to survive, you're hoping that other groups don't do something terrible, and hoping that you won't have to do something terrible, but times are crazy (#apocalypse2020).

You've got people who want to defund the police. You've got the police doubling down, as if they're the victims here. You've still got people peacefully protesting. You had secret groups causing all kinds of trouble (which we've oddly not done much about). You've got people just trying to work - not everyone in Gotham City was part of the chaos; some people were just trying to get through their shift. You've got people taking matters into their own hands. And with all of this, we've got a "leader" who only has three moves (like an old school fighting video game) - lying, dividing, and bullying. Feels like we have to pick a team, and just hope that it works out for us. Idk.

You've got people hiding under their beds, hoping that if they wait it out long enough, it'll all blow over and get back to normal. I hate to burst your comfort bubble, but "normal" has been gone and dead for a while now; there's no going back to that.

For black people, we've been in this fight forever. For us, it comes down to whether or not we want to believe that this current installment of the movement will be any different.

For white people.... well, I've seen some white people who look at me with MORE distain now (their true colors are evident) But, other white people have been extra nice to me... it’s awkward, but I appreciate the sentiment.

Meanwhile, other white people are doing stuff like this -

I still haven't been able to get through it; it's too cringe-worthy. I couldn’t even bring myself to add a link (but it’s still online, if you’re up for the challenge). Pretty much, she had to do some waiting for an Egg McMuffin, and after all of the waiting, she didn’t get it (the food... but also, you know... IT), and then she cried because of all of the anxiety and tension that she has had to endure recently, due to all of the protests. When criticized she replied that people were missing the point.

I’m not heartless. Normally, a person breaking down like that would be my kryptonite. But, in this case, there is some funny behind those tears.

Let’s see - feeling anxious, threatened, forced to be patient when you deserve better treatment (and leaving unfulfilled), crying, ridiculed, and when you voice your perspective people shout you down, while you feel like people are missing the point - hmmm.

Plus, cops are supposed to be bad ass and dangerous! Keeping us safe from all of the scary people out there. How am I supposed to have confidence in you and your badassery, once you post a vid of yourself crying over some McDonald’s?

 It’s gonna be aiight, Karen. I’m sure someone will solve the case for you. But, in the meantime, pull yourself together.

I had actually written a complete review, but... you know... I did this instead:)

This movie, "Uncut Gems" is about a degenerate gambling jeweler named Howard (played by Adam Sandler). Howard is a hot mess. Howard's professional life is a hot mess. Howard's family life is a hot mess. Howard's hot mistress (yep, MISTRESS) is a hot mess. You get the idea; that's the whole movie. I look at jewelers totally different now; I've stereotyped them all. That's how you do it, right? Here's a person who's different than me. I'm not going to ask many questions. I'm just going to assume things about him, as well as assume that all of his people are the same way All jewelers are high-risk-gambling degenerates.

Gambling is a vice that I've never quite understood. An addiction to ice cream makes total sense. An addiction to my lovableness is completely understandable. 

I guess I've never had the money or the patience to be a degenerate gambler. Every now and then, I'll venture to the casinos, but once I lose for the first time, I'm ready to go. I'm a starving artist. You don't hear about too many artists struggling with gambling. Drugs and alcohol, baby! Those are vices that I can respect!

This is the most stressful movie that I've ever watched. It didn't even feel like a movie. It was like following the IG stories of the most stressed out person that you know. Considering the stress that's already in the world right now, this was the WORST movie decision I could have possibly made. It IS technically a good movie, but I can't say that I enjoyed it.

He was my favorite basketball player before he retired. He played for the Boston Celtics. Pretty good in this movie... though playing himself. 

Boston is notorious for its racism. The realm of sports has amplified this fact in the past. But, KG has stated that he didn't experience much of that, BUT he was also an amazing player, who was a big part of a championship team.

Food for thought: 

Imagine if he had stunk up the joint. He could have very well have just been a tall black man, who stunk up the joint in a racist town. In this rare case, we have KG here who had lessened experiences of Boston’s racism, but he had to be exceptional in that particular industry for that to be a possibility. We can’t all be KG. 

In the beginning of the movie, a question is asked to Howard by his hot mistress - "Do you want to fight or cuddle?"

I didn't know that cuddling was an option.

Things to do in Malibu, L.A.'s best beach town

Malibu, California (CNN) —

Driving California’s Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH, in and around Los Angeles is a real challenge — expanding and contracting lanes, speeding sports cars, blinding sunsets, occasional bumper-to-bumper traffic.

But what makes navigating this coastal thoroughfare most difficult is keeping your eyes on the road.

The ocean, the horizon, the mountains demand attention; the beauty as you travel through is impossible not to observe. Of course, it’s not always perfectly pristine, but it’s apparent why this roadway is one of the world’s most famous.

Upon arrival in Malibu from Santa Monica, it’s difficult to tell you have actually gotten here. There’s no “Welcome to Malibu” sign or anything major to signal you’ve found the 21-mile stretch of PCH that runs through this beach community.

But once you’ve crossed Topanga Canyon, you’ve made it.

On your right is the Reel Inn, a roadside fish shack that specializes in fresh seafood served grilled or fried, with convivial, unpretentious picnic tables inside and out. Further along, on your left, you’ll pass a couple of other standby restaurants, Moonshadows and Duke’s, and their epic parking lots.

Look to the right, and you’ll see evidence of the destructive Woolsey Fire, that scorched 96,949 acres, destroyed 1,500 structures and took three lives in November 2018, nearly a year after the Thomas Fire did much of the same in Montecito up the road in Santa Barbara County.

It’s difficult to reconcile the devastation and destruction with the distinct beauty of this stretch of Southern California coast, but visiting Malibu is definitely what Malibu wants you to do. And while you bask in its sunny, rarefied glow, you’ll be helping good people along the road to recovery by patronizing their many wonderful restaurants, shops and hotels. And you get to be there, breathing salty air, purifying your soul and strolling the beach.

Hiking in Malibu is nothing short of breathtaking, in both ways.

Sadly, the fires have rendered many of the National Park Service’s Santa Monica National Recreation Area trailheads closed, but as of this publishing, Sandstone Peak Trail is open and offers the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains. Be sure to check the NPS website before heading out, as parks and trail closures are continuously updated.

Also, many of the California State Parks are back in business, and we recommend the Corral Canyon Park at the Sara Wan Trailhead if you’re searching for a relatively relaxed hike and excellent coastline views.

Another fun hike is at Point Dume Nature Preserve, where you can spy whales, dolphins and sea lions, depending on the season, as well as all kinds of wildlife, flora and fauna.

Surfrider Beach is just that: the most invigorating spot to watch locals ride the waves. It’s part of Malibu Lagoon State Beach that includes the biodiverse Malibu Lagoon and the picture-perfect Malibu Pier, a fantastic if crowded spot for fishing enthusiasts and foodies (more on that later).

Zuma Beach is a bit further north on PCH, and it’s — forgive me — major. It’s 1.8 miles of white sandy beach, and this writer spent a very large chunk of her childhood playing in the water and learning how to avoid rip tides, which can also be pretty gnarly.

It’s a great family beach, plenty of street parking (lots, too, but they charge you), bathrooms and showers and beachy food stands. Zuma gets additional points for having beach wheelchairs available to visitors who need them.

Now eat this

While on Malibu Pier, eat at either Malibu Farm outpost, where fresh and local ingredients are always on the menu.

The restaurant at the beginning of the pier is more (yet not-at-all) formal. You can reserve a table in the evenings and enjoy a full bar and waiter service. At the end of the pier, above the waves, try the more casual Malibu Farm Café. Here, you take a number and jockey for a good spot to chow down on a damn good breakfast burrito or a top-tier BLT.

If you have Instagram and you follow any Kardashian or Jenner, Liam and Miley Hemsworth or whoever, you know about Nobu Malibu.

Its magnificent perch on a low cliff above “billion dollar beach” (so-named for the price of real estate), the variety of luxury cars in the valet parking lot (Maybachs, Teslas and Range Rovers), the attention to detail in its Japanese-influenced architecture and design — let’s say it’s all worth it, if only once.

The fresh cuts nigiri, sushi and sashimi, along with Nobu’s famously addictive rock shrimp tempura and black cod with miso, make the jacked prices semi-worth it. What you’re paying for is the location and the possibility of a major celeb sighting.

Not far from Zuma you’ll find Malibu Seafood. It’s in the same vein as Reel Inn, but this is a roadside fish shack with a market. And it’s run by its owners, who are commercial fisherman, so this place is as real (and delicious) as it gets.

Breakfast must be had at the Malibu Beach Inn. There is no better perch for downing $35 soft scrambled eggs with truffles. The view of Malibu Pier and Carbon Beach is stunning, and the waitstaff is so friendly and down-to-earth, you’ll forget all the money you just spent. Probably.

Where to sleep

At the tippity top of tippy top places to stay in Malibu, maybe even all of California, is Nobu Ryokan.

This exclusive property — owned by Robert DeNiro, Larry Ellison, chef Nobu Matsuhisa and film producer Meir Teper — is an homage to Japanese design, a nearly exact replica of a specific Japanese ryokan. The guest houses, usually found in the mountains of Japan, are known for spare design, a muted palate and attention to detail. They are beloved for their intimacy and remoteness.

To recreate such a distinct architectural style, team Nobu spared no expense. Much of the furniture and art is from one of the owners’ private collection. And the hotel’s 16 minimalist rooms have outdoor decks with stunning ocean views, teak soaking tubs (a few are outdoors on the deck), soft luxe linens and a pretty rad minibar situation.

There is no restaurant or bar at the hotel, simply a welcome desk and a small, silent courtyard garden and a fairly bare gym. Room service from Nobu is available, as is a 24-hour concierge.

Another special and minimalist option is further north on PCH.

The Native is a refurbished, renamed mid-century motel. Formerly the Malibu Riviera, it was built in 1947, with superstar guests from Marilyn Monroe to Bob Dylan, who wrote his album “Blood on the Tracks” while staying there.

The Native is an intimate enclave, with only 13 rooms. (The Native was badly damaged by the Woolsey Fire, but they expect to reopen in spring 2019.)

There are no TVs, but there are hammocks, Wi-Fi and custom Kente-cloth robes. There’s not a restaurant per se, it’s more of a food concept called Coffee & Waffles, housed in an Airstream featuring a kitschy, beachy menu from chef Ludo Lefebvre.

Kyouka is starting to get the quadratic formula’s they were going through.

“Ah I see, you can solve them like this?”

“Oh, Kyouka-san, at first glance you’ll feel like you are stuck but if you look at the question properly you will be okay.”

“As expected that’s our Yaomomo, so easy to understand!”

“Oh, please, don’t say stuff like that..” 

Kyouka’s honest thoughts about Yaoyorozu made her blush happily, her explanations made it really easy for everyone to understand.

“Yaomomo-senseiiiiiiiii- How should I do this English translation?”

“Just give me a minute Ashido-san….. ah this one…”

Yaoyorozu’s standing study plan was the most perfect, each subject was carefully timetabled together, everyone’s weak point was analysed and measured. Yaoyorozu taught everyone with kindness and carefulness which made everything easy to understand too.

When they think about all the time and preparation she’d put into this, to think in the beginning they didn’t want to enter into this palace.

Because Ashido really wanted to attend the lodge for the test of courage she is aggressively trying really hard to concentrate.

“Uh, your face is gonna explode!”

However, there is already one person who has had enough, that guy is Kaminari Denki.

From the sports festival to the work placements, they’ve literally been swept away by these events, it’s bewildering and then having to come and study, the brain is going to fry if this keeps up!

“Ahhhhh! If you say anymore, I’m going to really explode!”

Even though he didn’t emit any electricity he had on his stupid facial expression. Kaminari turns towards his neighbouring Kyouka who tells him:

“Get a hold of yourself! Don’t you want to go to the lodge?”

“I doooooooo, but even Aizawa sensei said who ever gets failing marks won’t be able to attend, I even had supplementary lessons at school!”

“AHHHHHHHH…. somebody……. anybody please exchange heads with me!!”

Ojiro tried to give him some encouraging words, but the soon to be reality for Kaminari is him blowing up and sinking, because of this Ojiro felt bad and apologised for not being more sensitive.

“Kaminari-san, should we take a break soon? It’s good to have moderate breaks, it raises efficiency” Yaoyorozu suggested, just then a voice could be heard from outside the doors.

“So then…” The door opens, and the butler enters.

“As you wished, the tea has been prepared.”

“Welcome back.”

Don’t tell me, he’s just been waiting on standby all this time???

Kyouka and the gang eyes rounded at the sight of the maids reeling in a wagon with tea and cookies in front of them. 

Just from the looks of it, the tea set prepared were obviously really expensive, they watched a crimson red coloured tea being poured out into the cups. The steam along with the soft aroma can be felt drifting in the air around them.

The butlers and maid left out to avoid getting in the way of their break so they quietly and quickly distributed the tea and left the lecture hall.

“Pleas everyone drink and eat up.”

Yaoyorozu acted as a cue and everyone stopped their studying and took a sip of the crimson red tea.

“The tea brewed by the maid for us…” The carefully brewed red tea rains down and stains the dry grounds of Kaminari’s heart.

“mhmm, that hit the spot!” The obviously exhausted Ashido complimented.

“Harrods? or something right?”

“Yes that’s correct, I personally love drinking this specific blend when studying, it’s produced in a different area, that’s why the blend produces a complex flavour of persimmons so when your brain becomes weary, you relax and drink this, it’ll instantly rejuvenate you.”

“ummmmmmmm…… I don’t really get what you just said but it’s delicious!”

“I don’t usually drink tea but this crimson red tea is really good!”

Sero and Ojiro appeared to be quite interested in the tea.

Ashido eyes began to shine at the tea coloured cookie she just dipped into her cup.

“This cookie looks real yummy!” The little distorted shapes on the cookies were kinda weird but nonetheless they were certain it was ordered from some fancy high end shop which had their version of stuff they’d thought would be delicious, well that’s what everyone thought as they put the cookies into their mouths.

Yaoyorozu smiled at everyone eating, waiting for the taste of nutrients (?) to hit, it was different from the usual sweet tastes, she anticipated them to taste the complex bitterness.

“……………………”

The five cocked their head slightly at the unexpected taste, at first they were stuck in a state of confusion but suddenly a strong bitter and pungent taste came rushing in their mouth with a strong hint of salted fish!

Their senses were going off, their tongues were tingling and their mouths and throat felt like it was under attack. They turned their head back to try and stop the smell of fish from getting into their nose.

“YGYGSHJSSJSGSGSGJSG” 

This isn’t something people can eat, they had to trust the instinct of their tongues right now, but they were in such a fancy place, there must be a reason, they have to doubt their own tastebuds.

This must be the taste of celebs.

“What do you guys think?”

To stop themselves from puking, they pressed their hands down onto their mouth, their faces turned blue and started producing cold sweat.

Yaoyorozu suddenly notices their demise, but they five just chugged down the red tea alongside the cookies.

“Is it possible that it is not suitable to your taste?”

“Ah…h n-no it’s not like that…”

“The celeb cookie is grea—–t!”

Somehow Ojiro and Ashido managed to open their mouths to try and not hurt Yaoyorozu feelings but she becomes worried she made them eat bad cookies.

“………….?!”

Yaoyorozu’s face fills with shock.

“Wai- please excuse me for a moment..”

She presses her hand against her mouth as she becomes mildly confused.

The remaining five waited for her footsteps to distant away from them before they end up throwing the cookies away.

“uwaaaa! The taste is still in my mouth..”

“These aren’t cookies anymore, they’re weapons of mass destruction!” said Ashido as she tries to drink out the taste with her tea.

Kaminari was still staring suspiciously at the cookie.

“But this really woke us up right? It got me in one shot!”

Following on from what Kaminari said, Ojiro mentions with a serious expression.

“I really had to work up the courage to take bite it once.”

Kyouka also downing her tea played lookout and kept her eyes fixed on the door.

“I wonder if Yaomomo tasted something weird, she did look confuse?”

“Ah, it doesn’t matter, she’s going to return soon.”

However, it was the opposite to what Kaminari said, it didn’t seem like Yaoyorozu was going to come back any time soon. But they can’t resume their tutoring with a teacher however, they thought with concentration, motivation and a different mindset they could atleast try,

But Kyouka couldn’t function with the smell still lingering, she’s still trying to get rid of the taste that is still swimming in her mouth with the tea.

“Wait a minute guys, I’m gonna head to the toilet”

“Ah, me too! I need to go too, I drank way too much!”

Both Kyouka and Ashido get up and opened the door, there was a maid on standby for anything they might need.

They had to hurry as the urge to pee was unreal, the long corridor playing music did not help either and Ashido was about to burst!

“fuaa- I made it! 

“It’s tough because this place is so wide!”

The two exit after washing their hands both with refreshed smiling faces, suddenly they both stopped.

“Ah…. which way was back again?”

“oh.. god”

Right or left, no matter which way they look it’s just the same continuous long corridor! It feels like they came from the right but it also feels like they came from the left.

Kyouka was embarassed about the maid waiting in front of the toilet so she sent her away, now who was going to make sure they returned back okay?

“I don’t think she’s coming, let’s just go which ever!”

“Huh?!…. wait!”

Ashido simply suggested turning to the right based on only intuition, Kyouka was unsure but followed anyways.

“They’re late…. did those guys get lost or something?” Sero asked with a laughing face, Ojiro agrees with an eyebrow raise.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they got lost, look at this place.”

“But the maid would be there to bring them back right? They should be okay, no?”

“Nah, I think so too” Ojiro smiles. While Ojiro and Sero were conversing, Kaminari planted his face down into his notebook and started rubbing it around.

“…………………”

He wiggles the top half of his body like a giant worm, Sero and Ojiro couldn’t help but notice, they exchange looks and then watched Kaminari’s head, Sero with a calming voice asks;

“Dude, what did you just do?”

“I’m trying to get the knowledge to enter my head.”

“Dude, I don’t think that’s going to work, you’d probably lose more knowledge like that” Sero calmly pointed out as the teary eyed Kaminari raises his head.

“sooooooooooo what should I doooooooooo?!”

“Try and study normally.. don’t you think?”

“My brain has reached its limit!…. Limit!!! If I don’t get one more letter into me… uhhh….hu…good bye lodge camp… hello supplementary lesson hell.”

Even his dreams of having tea made by maids before couldn’t stop Kaminari from going into give up mode, Kaminari is just doing whatever now.

Ojiro and Sero tries their best to console him.

“I-it’s gonna be okay man! There’s still plenty of time elft!”

“Y-yeahh… Yeahh! That’s right! If we just focus hard enough we can surpass any difficulties! Remember the school’s motto!”

“PLUS ULTRA!”

“….Even if I can’t remember one more letter?”

It didn’t look like Kaminari’s give up mode was going to end anytime soon, this went against his usual positive attitude. I guess the studying and it’s stress really changes you negatively!

“Hey, you can definitely plus ultra that last letter can’t you?”

“Yeah, what Ojiro said, you can totally power through the last word! Don’t you want to attend the lodge camp?!”

His classmates kind, encouraging words had Kaminari’s stuck gears slowly moving again.

“………y-you’re right! I just need to power through this last letter!” said Kaminari as his eyes fell upon his English text book and its tightly packed lines of English letters.

From A to Z he tries to line up the letters in a formation he’d like and was able t to read from.

pa———–n, Kaminari bursts a brain cell!

“ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! I can’t I can’t I can’t!” Kaminari tries to escape from the reality as he covers his ears from Ojiro and Sero’s worrying words.

The world is cruel, he remembers the ridiculing from Mineta Minoru from a few days ago.

-When push comes to shove, you gotta do what you gotta do…

“….ha”

Kaminari lets out a dry laugh, the days before it was Kaminari who kept bragging to Mineta about going to study at Yaoyorozu’s house.

“Ha…ha, if you cheat you won’t be able to attend the lodge camp, don’t even think about that conversation with Mineta.”

“you’d get expelled dude!” Ojiro and Sero laughs together, Kaminari laughs too.

“Yeah, you’re right.”

Kaminari looks at the reflection on Sero’s arm. Sero’s quirk allows him to shoot tape from his elbows which he can control freely and draw back whenever, it’s an extremely high-tier, useful quirk. And then Kaminari suddenly remembers the class seating order, Kaminari sits diagonally behind Sero’s seat.

“hahaha….ha…. no that can’t be right….”

“hah?”

Ojiro and Sero stared at him with puzzled faces as his laugh disappeared and his frightening voices draws near to them.
