Down Under

It’s wild what a difference a year can make. I’ve not spoken publicly of things I’m about to share, though those closest to me are well aware of these events. It’s recently been suggested to me, however, that writing more openly about the situation would be a good final step in releasing the negative energy surrounding it, thus closing this path of catharsis I have traveled for the past few months. And if nothing else, it could serve as a cautionary tale for someone else who might be able to avoid some of the pitfalls I fell into.

I met her last January. Her name was Emily… at least that’s what she told me her name was. In retrospect, I’m guessing that was just another of many things that wound up not being true. But in my memory she will always be Emily, and for the purposes of this exercise, it’s probably best to leave it that way. She reached out to me through a post I made on a personals subreddit. She purported to be from Australia, which will no doubt ring a bell for those of you who were curious as to why I suddenly became very interested in Australian facts around this time last year. She claimed to be a veterinarian and, near as I can tell, there may have been a hint of truth to that. I don’t know. It’s all still kind of difficult to parse through, unfortunately.

Be that as it may, there seemed to be this instant chemistry between us. We spent a lot of time texting, talking on the phone, exchanging pictures and voice messages. I liked her. A lot. I thought there was this energy we had going on. It was the kind of authentic vibe I hadn’t felt in a very, very long time. I was attracted to everything about her, and better yet, she seemed to actually be attracted to everything about me. In retrospect, I should have perhaps been more skeptical of a seemingly beautiful woman from a foreign country being interested in someone of my portly stature, but even my well-developed self awareness still has its blind spots.

The trouble came, of course, a couple of days before our first scheduled video call. I don’t want to get into too many details, because honestly there’s just no way for me to know how much of what I was told was true, and how much wasn’t… which is its own problem. The important part is that the video call didn’t happen for reasons that were portrayed to me as very dramatic. There was about a two-week period of radio silence where the only interaction I had from her was the recognition that she was viewing my Instagram stories. I started posting stories every day just to see if she was still thinking of me during what she had laid out to me as a very difficult and emotionally challenging situation for her. I haven’t used Instagram since all this went sideways. I still can’t bear to open the app on my phone. I honestly have considered deleting it altogether. But I digress…

After the radio silence, Emily got back in touch with me and said that she wanted to come over for a visit to see if we would still have the same chemistry in person. Then she would know if this was something she could truly move forward with. Of course I was ecstatic. So plans were set for her to come in the early spring, which in retrospect would have been just about the time the coronavirus began to spiral out of control here in the United States. I sometimes wonder what life would have been like if things had turned out to be real. It wasn’t long before travel was restricted leaving the country, so she likely would have been stuck here for a while. It would have meant more time together discovering each other, showing her around Kentucky, introducing her to my friends, and maybe, just maybe, building something meaningful and lasting.

But of course none of that happened, because she never came. It was never real. And if I’m honest, I still feel like an idiot for ever believing it could have been.

Emily dropped out of contact again about a week before she was supposed to arrive. She resurfaced long enough to once again outline a very dramatic situation that involved her family. I will refrain from specifics because if it was a lie, then it’s an unspeakably awful one… but if for some strange reason even some of it was true, then it’s just as unspeakably awful. Either way, it was soul-crushing. In a single moment, I had gone from planning out a two-week whirlwind vacation to the reality that this woman was now disappearing from my life.

I am so unbelievably stupid sometimes.

Looking back with the benefit of not feeling that devastation again, it seems clear that the potential of a face-to-face encounter, just like a video call, had made her realize that she couldn’t keep up whatever this thing was. So cue the drama and then exit stage left.

I’m not so proud of this next part…

I asked the catfish subreddit for help determining just how badly I had been bamboozled. In doing so, I linked the Instagram account she was using for our correspondence. For all of my intellect, it genuinely never occurred to me that people might send nasty messages. I wasn’t thinking very clearly at all, truth be told. But lo and behold, the next day I get a pretty spicy message from Emily on Google Hangouts (she had blocked and unfollowed me on Instagram and Discord with nary a word about it) telling me that people had been sending her some really mean things.

That’s when a friend of mine who had managed to infiltrate her Instagram, unbeknownst to me, sent me a screencapped photo of a woman on a beach, legs intertwined with another man’s with champagne glasses in both their hands. It was a first-person perspective photo, so I couldn’t see faces. But obviously it made this already strange situation seem a million times worse. I called Emily out on this, and the only thing she could say in reply is that she had “made the right choice.”

I spent the next few months floundering, trying to make sense of the million little pieces my heart had been shattered into. I really opened up to this person. I trusted her. I believed her when she said that she had feelings for me. But none of it was true. As you can imagine, I’ve spent a good amount of time dealing with this in my therapy. It’s hard to not have answers. Even in a brief email exchange some months later, Emily said it was all a big misunderstanding and that she hadn’t whisked off on some romantic getaway. But honestly those pictures likely weren’t even of her, either. There’s literally no way to know what the actual truth behind his whole fucked up situation, and that has been the most difficult thing to navigate over this past year. The utter deceit of it all reaches depths I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams.

So am I foolish? Yes. Of course I am. I think that’s just part of my personality. I don’t necessarily view it as a character flaw, per se. But it certainly bit me in the ass here. This was definitely a lesson in how to temper that naiveté with a healthy amount of skepticism. I don’t do so well with balance though, so the pendulum swung hard in the other direction for quite a while. It’s closer to the middle now, but I still have more than my share of moments where I wonder if love is a real possibility for me.

I’ve done so much inner work. I’m very proud of the person I’ve become on the inside. I’m kind, thoughtful, generous, empathetic, funny, intelligent, and possess a host of other intangible qualities that make me a very compelling person. But I am also fat and there’s no getting around it. (Pun somewhat intended?) And a woman of Emily’s purported beauty and social status dating a fat guy, no matter how amazing, is just not indicative of the reality in which we live. It’s the kind of situation you would only ever see on a television show or in a movie. But that’s not real life. And perhaps if I had understood that better, I wouldn’t have had my heart broken into a million little pieces.

But this isn’t a sob story. I’m legitimately okay now. Therapy has been a godsend and I’ve done a lot of really important work to heal from it all. But of course there are… remnants. It’s not the kind of thing you can ever completely wipe from your memory. It happened. It’s over. And I’ve moved on. Part of that is accepting that being a bachelor for the rest of my life is a distinct possibility, and perhaps may be a likelihood. At some point you have to face facts, you know? When you can confront yourself with that kind of honesty, the likelihood of someone being able to pull the wool over your eyes again dramatically decreases. Besides, I’ve got children to raise. A life to lead. I don’t really have time for childish fantasies of serendipity anymore. If I’ve learned nothing else from this ordeal, it’s that such fairy tales just aren’t real.

If you have read this far, thank you for indulging me. I really hope there’s something of value for you here. I guess I feel that if being open my mistakes can somehow help someone else avoid the same pitfalls, then it gives an added layer of meaning to them for me. So perhaps it’s a bit of a selfish pursuit intertwined with an altruistic one. That’s probably a question best left for the philosophers and dime-store psychologists among us.

Kids Are Missing Critical Windows for Lead Testing Due to Pandemic

CLEVELAND — Families skipping or delaying pediatric appointments for their young children because of the pandemic are missing out on more than vaccines. Critical testing for lead poisoning has plummeted in many parts of the country.

In the Upper Midwest, Northeast and parts of the West Coast — areas with historically high rates of lead poisoning — the slide has been the most dramatic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In states such as Michigan, Ohio and Minnesota, testing for the brain-damaging heavy metal fell by 50% or more this spring compared with 2019, health officials report.

“The drop-off in April was massive,” said Thomas Largo, section manager of environmental health surveillance at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, noting a 76% decrease in testing compared with the year before. “We weren’t quite prepared for that.”

Blood tests for lead, the only way to tell if a child has been exposed, are typically performed by pricking a finger or heel or tapping a vein at 1- and 2-year-old well-child visits. A blood test with elevated lead levels triggers the next critical steps in accessing early intervention for the behavioral, learning and health effects of lead poisoning and also identifying the source of the lead to prevent further harm.

Because of the pandemic, though, the drop in blood tests means referrals for critical home inspections plus medical and educational services are falling, too. And that means help isn’t reaching poisoned kids, a one-two punch, particularly in communities of color, said Yvonka Hall, a lead poisoning prevention advocate and co-founder of the Cleveland Lead Safe Network. And this all comes amid COVID-related school and child care closures, meaning kids who are at risk are spending more time than ever in the place where most exposure happens: the home.

“Inside is dangerous,” Hall said.

The CDC estimates about 500,000 U.S. children between ages 1 and 5 have been poisoned by lead, probably an underestimate due to the lack of widespread testing in many communities and states. In 2017, more than 40,000 children had elevated blood lead levels, defined as higher than 5 micrograms per deciliter of blood, in the 23 states that reported data.

While preliminary June and July data in some states indicates lead testing is picking up, it’s nowhere near as high as it would need to be to catch up on the kids who missed appointments in the spring at the height of lockdown orders, experts say. And that may mean some kids will never be tested.

“What I’m most worried about is that the kids who are not getting tested now are the most vulnerable — those are the kids I’m worried might not have a makeup visit,” said Stephanie Yendell, senior epidemiology supervisor in the health risk intervention unit at the Minnesota Department of Health.

Lifelong Consequences

There’s a critical window for conducting lead poisoning blood tests, timed to when children are crawling or toddling and tend to put their hands on floors, windowsills and door frames and possibly transfer tiny particles of lead-laden dust to their mouths.

Children at this age are more likely to be harmed because their rapidly growing brains and bodies absorb the element more readily. Lead poisoning can’t be reversed; children with lead poisoning are more likely to fall behind in school, end up in jail or suffer lifelong health problems such as kidney and heart disease.

That’s why lead tests are required at ages 1 and 2 for children receiving federal Medicaid benefits, the population most likely to be poisoned because of low-quality housing options. Tests are also recommended for all children living in high-risk ZIP codes with older housing stock and historically high levels of lead exposure.

Testing fell far short of recommendations in many parts of the country even before the pandemic, though, with one recent study estimating that in some states 80% of poisoned children are never identified. And when tests are required, there has been little enforcement of the rule.

Early in the pandemic, officials in New York’s Erie County bumped up the threshold for sending a public health worker into a family’s home to investigate the source of lead exposure from 5 micrograms per deciliter to 45 micrograms per deciliter (a blood lead level that usually requires hospitalization), said Dr. Gale Burstein, that county’s health commissioner. For all other cases during that period, officials inspected only the outside of the child’s home for potential hazards.

Ohio, which has among the highest levels of lead poisoning in the country, recently expanded automatic eligibility for its Early Intervention program to any child with an elevated blood lead test, providing the opportunity for occupational, physical and speech therapy; learning supports for school; and developmental assessments. If kids with lead poisoning don’t get tested, though, they won’t be referred for help.

In early April, there were only three referrals for elevated lead levels in the state, which had been fielding nine times as many on average in the months before the pandemic, said Karen Mintzer, director of Bright Beginnings, which manages them for Ohio’s Department of Developmental Disabilities. “It basically was a complete stop,” she said. Since mid-June, referrals have recovered and are now above pre-pandemic levels.

“We should treat every child with lead poisoning as a medical emergency,” said John Belt, principal investigator for the Ohio Department of Health’s lead poisoning program. “Not identifying them is going to delay the available services, and in some cases lead to a cognitive deficit.”

Pandemic Compounds Worries

One of the big worries about the drop in lead testing is that it’s happening at a time when exposure to lead-laden paint chips, soil and dust in homes may be spiking because of stay-at-home orders during the pandemic.

Exposure to lead dust from deteriorating paint, particularly in high-friction areas such as doors and windows, is the most common cause of lead exposure for children in the U.S.

“I worry about kids in unsafe housing, more so during the pandemic, because they’re stuck there during the quarantine,” said Dr. Aparna Bole, a pediatrician at Cleveland’s University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

The pandemic may also compound exposure to lead, experts fear, as both landlords and homeowners try to tackle renovation projects without proper safety precautions while everyone is at home. Or the economic fallout of the crisis could mean some people can no longer afford to clean up known lead hazards at all.

“If you’ve lost your job, it’s going to make it difficult to get new windows, or even repaint,” said Yendell.

The CDC says it plans to help state and local health departments track down children who missed lead tests. Minnesota plans to identify pediatric clinics with particularly steep drops in lead testing to figure out why, said Yendell.

But, Yendell said, that will likely have to wait until the pandemic is over: “Right now I’m spending 10-20% of my time on lead, and the rest is COVID.”

The pandemic has stretched already thinly staffed local health departments to the brink, health officials say, and it may take years to know the full impact of the missed testing. For the kids who’ve been poisoned and had no intervention, the effects may not be obvious until they enter school and struggle to keep up.

Its purpose is to capture all the things I have learned about the market, the competition, and customers. The session promoted us to think about our brands in a lot more detail and how these details can impact the way we conduct the film.

We basically began the session by having a break down of what needs to be referred to within the marketing report. It is important to analyse the brand and their competitors specific use of moving image and digital marketing strategies. Today I will need to expand my research into how my fashion film relates to other areas of the business. We went on to do some work into the brand analysis and therefore attempt to define the brand essence, brand values and brand personality, as these are the features that become the overall brand identity. There were a number of questions we were set to answer, I will insert these below along with my answers.

The blog is frequently uploaded onto and is a platform for discussion between them and the consumer, it allows them to have a voice. The tone of voice is reciprocated throughout their literature creating easy to read, personable, sophisticated and well communicated content. Their use of direct language again allows them to connect to the consumer well.

How does this tone of voice come through in the brands photography?

It is the choice, range and diversity of the models that solidify jigsaws inclusive, honest and achievable perception towards the consumer.

Who does the brand work with to create its visual content? Jigsaw have collaborated with others to create their visual content such as collaborations with the National film and television school, Kuroki (a Japenese mill), Sam Kerr (designer and maker) to name the few.

Competitor Anaylsis

We then went onto explore more behind the brands competitors, using the SWOT analysis. I had previously done this section of research for COS a close competitor for Jigsaw, but I had not explored another competitor in this detail. I therefore decided to do the same task for that of Whistles another very close competitor to Jigsaw. Below is my Swot analysis of Whistles.

In summary I believe that compared to Jigsaw Whistles have a stronger form of intelligent visual communication strategies in particular their photography, editorial and film. Their use of strategic collaborations within their films make them interesting and therefore have a strong following and response from them. This therefore is something that Jigsaw really need to consider when creating their new campaign video, they need to step above the competition. Whistles current film campaigns are strong and varied. They collaborate and although are quite focused upon the clothing they have interesting techniques and story lines to draw consumers in and this is something Jigsaw are currently not even coming close to. The SWOT analysis again has worked as a really good tool to explore Jigsaws competitors and the exploration of the competitor is crucial to set Jigsaw apart from them and work towards a greater unique selling point.

Statistical Competitive Data

As part of a section of my own research I just wanted to explore some statistical data into Jigsaw and their closest competitors, Cos and Whistles. I believe that exploring these statistics could help to identify Jigsaws positioning compared to their competitors and perhaps why they are doing well if they are, or why they may be under-performing compared. This will then lead my research to explore how the film could potentially benefit from the creation of a campaign film like the one I wish to create.

Jigsaw

There wasn’t much available online for Jigsaws annual report. However, I was able to find an article from the fashion united website which explored their rise in annual sales from 2016, therefore this is not the most recent implication of their profits but it will provide relevant information regardless. The article explains that “Clothing retailer Jigsaw has reported an 8 percent increase in its annual revenues to 94.7 million pounds (123 million dollars) for the year ended October 1, 2016, reports City A. M. The report further said, the sales growth was driven by 18 percent jump in UK online sales and 11 percent rise in profit to 6.2 million pounds (8 million dollars) in the UK”. Another article found on drapers also explored the report published by Jigsaw explaining that “online sales increased to £19m, up from £15m in 2015. There was strong growth internationally, as Jigsaw began trading in the Netherlands, incorporated its Australian franchise partner and continued to open concessions in the US. European sales grew to £1.9m, up from £445,000 in 2015. Sales in the rest of the world hit £3.35m, up from £1.78m in 2015”. So clearly Jigsaw have had a successful few years and this film campaign could help to extend this success further. From my research into their previous film campaigns I would argue this is not the area that has resulted in this margin of success therefore there is area for more improvement from this.

Looking into their competitors annual reports will allow comparison to see if Jigsaw are actually doing well in comparison.

Whistles

When looking into Whistles annual report I again found information from drapers which explained that “Womenswear retailer Whistles has posted a growth in sales and EBITDA for the 62 weeks to 1 April 2017, as the business bounces back from a loss the previous year”. From the research I conducted I would believe that their persistence into their visual campaigns like their shoots and films would definitely have been a contributor to this rise in sales. Again using the website fashion united they provided figures for the year before as there was not much available on this year. “Whistles has said that its EBITDA for the 52 weeks ending January 30, 2016 decreased to 2.9 million pounds (3.5 million dollars) and sales were down 1 percent”.

Compared to Jigsaws statistics it actually shows that Whistles are quite dramatically behind them with their sales. It is interesting as they are aesthetically such similar brands. Clearly Jigsaw has something that sets them apart. I have to consider however that both these results were from last year so unless I can find information for this year this is the data I will have to work from.

Cos

The complications I have discovered with understanding Cos’s annual report is that as it is a diffusion group from H&M it is near to impossible to find data just related to them and not H&M as a whole. Looking purely at H&M would not be reliable as they are such a larger and national brand compared to both Jigsaw and Whistles. However I therefore had a little insight into H&M by using an online article published by the telegraph newspaper “Global fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) will close stores after suffering its biggest drop in quarterly sales in 10 years. The group, which owns Stockholm-based H&M as well as brands such as COS, Weekday and & Other Stories, said its sales excluding VAT fell 4pc to 50.4bn Swedish kronor (£5.94bn) in the three months to November 30, compared to the corresponding quarter last year. Analysts at Reuters had expected revenue to increase 2pc. The retailer said that sales in its fourth quarter were "significantly below the company’s own expectations".

Clearly although it is not necessarily accurate to Cos’s position played in the decline of sales it is clear that Jigsaw seems to be out of its competitors achieving a higher percentage in sales. I believe that Jigsaw can expand this and do better however, although their sales are improving I believe that a film campaign could really push them as a brand out further and get them defined fully as the brand who incorporates quality at an affordable price.

Why Are Jigsaw Not Performing Well Visually?

I believe it is crucial for me to create this film campaign to promote Jigsaw in particular getting something more out of their campaigns and getting more people aware and involved. I believe their visual merchandising currently is poor and could really promote them further. I believe they need to focus on a film that defines and represents their style, narrative and honest tone because that to me is their USP. I think it is important they aim to keep their campaigns fluent and relevant to one another in order to build a distinctive identity that consumers can easily relate to.

Social Media

I believe social media could perhaps be the biggest contributor to getting this film campaign out there and also to improve upon Jigsaws fairly dull social media sights that could do with improving. Social media campaigns are cost effective and a easy technique to build upon a larger target market and therefore get the campaign out there and spoken about and have the later result being getting Jigsaws name out and perhaps promoting sales due to this.

Further Exploration Into Brand Analysis

I then went onto explore further into Jigsaws brand analysis and in particular the brands identity. I had previously completed other research into the brands identity such as a brand identity prism and a brand key. I now needed to define elements such as the brands essence, values and personality, which will highlight how Jigsaw differentiates from its competitors in the similar market.

Brand Essence: Honesty, Independence, Inclusivity.

Brand Values: Affordable, luxury, authenticity, considered, sophisticated.

Brand personality: Honest, independent, sophisticated, determined, authentic.

Jigsaws slogan sums this essence up well: Jigsaw- style and truth.

I think this research has really allowed me to understand Jigsaw in even further detail. I believe now I am defiantly ready to begin creating a more solidified idea and concepts and therefore I will explore looking at scene selection and more detailed decisions like this to extend my research into my film.

Is it that we over-parent? What parents need to understand

My very last look on commercial TV has been the usual morning panel where highly made-up ladies discuss “problems” in the paper headlines.

One of the subjects for debate was the increase in crime in certain parts of regional Australia.

My co-panellist launched in the way unworthy and idle modern parents are and an impassioned speech regarding parenting.

I asked her where her evidence was to get her statement and she stared at me like I had been a half-wit. The bad quality of modern parenting appeared to be self explanatory.

We’re hard on parents. By “we”, I suggest everyone.

Parents are demanding on each other and independently. People without kids can be tough for parents, and older generations, including grandparents, could be scathing about “modern” approaches to parenting.

A 2014 Ipsos Global Trends study found that 81 per cent of Australians think that parents don’t take responsibility for the behavior of the children, placing us among the spectrum of countries at the top three.

In the qualitative research I have conducted during the past ten years, the exact criticisms of modern kids and their parents come up time and again: that Australian kids lack esteem, are rude and qualified, are sheltered and mollycoddled, and haven’t the skills or the wit to entertain themselves.

We blame parents who apparently parent too busy at work or self-absorbed to actually pay attention to their kids.

Or, we are too overprotective, not letting kids be kids.

It seems parents can not win either way

They are either overly hands-off or overly hands-on.

Whether today’s kids are in fact worse than previous productions, or even the parents of today have been in fact competent that their agendas, is extremely tough to measure.

The perception which parents and kids are becoming worse seems to have taken hold.

The other component of this discussion that’s quite difficult to locate data that is authoritative on is whether parents do in fact spend less time than they did, say.

Not one of the reliable quantitative or qualitative research paints a picture of dramatically decreasing time spent with kids.

In fact has shown increasing involvement of both mother and dad in kids’ lives participation with homework in addition to managing active schedules.

So if anything, parents often feel that family schedules are weighed down with All This child busyness:

The busyness of even our kids is our fears and the final result of our intentions.

My experience was parents beating them up continuously if they picture they fall short, and doing their best.

If the rising generation is assumed to be evidence of the parents’ failures I have found very little to be worried about.

Are conscious of their parents’ hard work and their own great fortune. It is because they are just too busy, if they don’t stop to consider it enough.

Instead of being dumb in their approach my experience is that parents devote an excessive amount of time discussing their philosophies and approach with friends and loved ones.

Why should our kids be battery or free-range cage? What is the correct kind of school?

We may worry that we are over-complicating our lives and their lives but in the long run, a lot people can not help but encourage our kids into a complete schedule of activities or dish out for expensive private schooling, although we understand the research shows it doesn’t always provide the very best return on investment.

This investment in our kids is driven by love, but also fear: not merely that they’ll be abducted or hurt, however that no matter how hard they try at school, they will struggle to locate their location in the upcoming labor market, steamrolled possibly by clever and hardworking Asian kids abroad and within our own universities and schools.

As one grandma once put it to me personally quite bluntly: “If our kids do not get a fantastic education, they’ll be cleaning bathrooms for the Chinese.”
