i was crying with my dad on a walk a few weeks back, and normally when this happens he reminds me of how short life is, and i do not feel better. but that day he looked at me and told me about how we’re all made of stardust, in the same way that all food cooked in a microwave is technically homemade. iron is iron and every star has its supernova, and somewhere along the line matter stays matter but it looks a little different. and this i knew, i’d heard it before repeated in similar words, and it never really hit me. but then he said something that caught me off guard—he told me that stars inevitably explode, and there’s no variance in that. so when we are ourselves, we are the universe doing what it knows how to do, and what it has always done and will do. we are tradition and trust all at once. i cried a little harder, and wrote it down.
