Some of the dialogue from the Guardian Tower has been living rent free in my head and now I want to yell about it because it’s SO GOOD for background lore

Okay, so, on the first floor, Mindi tells us this:

I really like this because it helps illustrate one of the logistical problems of the Rose. Like, even if you took away everything else that makes them bad (which, admittedly, is most of the organisation and its purpose), the fact that they tend to, by default, present themselves as the only option and drive out competition is bad. On paper, a force of people trained in combat against magical threats, with reasonably easy access to that training, which has garrisons stationed across the land, is actually a pretty good solution to the whole Recurring Evil Magical Threats thing. We know this because the guardians and the paladins and the dragonslayers exist! They do this! The Rose seems to make membership easier to access but, frankly, I suspect that is in part because their training is less thorough.

And when the Rose show up and drive those other groups out (like they’ve done with the Guardians), they don’t actually improve anything. Best case scenario, everything is exactly the way it was before. More likely, things would get worse, because the people with active experience defending a particular area have been driven away and now the Rose members have to play catch-up

(A good example of how on paper a group like the Rose could help an area is Book 3 Amityvale. The local Guardians were long gone, so the Rose were able to help without doing that extra damage and made Amityvale a safer place to live....... but that’s specifically for the human inhabitants. Plus, we know they’re affecting the magic of the area - Amaris’s moon has started having phases - and that’s! probably not good! Also see: Raven having to flee for her own safety after getting bitten by a werewolf. Even where they are ostensibly doing the most good, the Rose are still an active danger to many, even their own in the wrong circumstances)

And, meanwhile, on the ground floor...

......further proof that the Rose actively try to drive competition out of the area. Falconreach has repeatedly made it clear that they want nothing to do with the Rose and they keep picking fights with the patrols.

and you know i’ve always thought that it’s such a shame that all the big name examples we have of “filing the serial numbers off:” like, turning a fanfiction into an original work are ahem. not neccessarily the greatest works of literary fiction BECAUSE LIKE. and maybe this is because of my love for the wonderful “expy” (we should put kaworu in more anime. we should do it more) BUT I FEEL LIKE it can be done awesomely. sometimes i see people’s heavily-AU’d and tonally shifted fanfiction and im like damn man. i’d love to read this as ur original book. i feel like the key is twofold: 1) remember to reintroduce the world and characters properly in the text because you won’t have the fanfiction tags and original property to do that for u and 2) get SILLAY you dont need to keep everything about the original characters..... u can change their hair colours.....their names....anything u want......................................................

then again i have a theory that we only notice these serial numbers being filed off when it’s done sloppily so maybe we do have some good stuff out there....hidden in plain sight.....

Hm you know I was talking with my friend about Nightbringer and I was telling them how Nightbringer feels like the Devs attempt to actually write a better story or do right by some characters and just a more better grasp on story

But I also just realized the game sorta feels like New Game + for me especially if you played OG Obey Me and are familiar with it's shtick and it's without the items and a harder difficulty.

Mannnn this isn't how New Game + usually goes... Maybe we'll get a secret ending with this lol?

I think one of the hardest things to explain about getting shut down often when you were young, is that you learn to shut yourself down before you can even get your hopes up.

Everything is prohibitive. Cost, time, energy.

You're trained not to enjoy things. Nice shoes, art supplies, thread, fabric, tools. Because "what happens if there's an emergency later and you don't have it?"

So you just sit on your hands, unable to do anything.

I enjoy making things, I just keep forgetting that I CAN make them.

but for anyone who's confused; the context for this clip is that Badgerspanner is a longtime Xisuma viewer who has been part of his community for like at least five years now, probably more, and they also happen to be engaged to Joe Hills

(I know some people were confused (including Cleo) but X does in fact know who Badgerspanner is, as you can tell from the fact that he was surprised to hear they were moving to America, because he knows they're British. He just didn't know that they're engaged to Joe. Even though Joe had definitely told him and the other hermits.)

For extra context, realPhali who made this video is also a longtime Xisuma viewer and a longtime friend of Badger's (Badger is actually still a mod on Phali's own Minecraft server, Shamblecraft)

though i eventually got to read some, in earlier years goosebumps books would be the kind of series where i'd just ponder the cover art, and i always liked the drama of the monster blood illustration (the lighting/colors....sure nothing's happening in it but i felt it evoked the drama of "what if you're downstairs and something's upstairs" much like "what if you're upstairs and something's downstairs") like well too bad i guess i never got around to reading i at the time. but as of a recap yesterday i'm surprised to now be at least 90% sure i read part if not all of it, and thinking i hadn't may be due to how kind of nothing happens in it
