Holy shit have I had a week.
So early morning on the 13th I lost power, and It was below like 15 degrees outside. I was in my house for around 2-3 days. The first day it was too windy to setup the outdoor gas camp stove, We have a fireplace but tbh we've discovered it doesn't heat up the room that much, so nothing hot to eat/drink really. On the third day we we're very close to running out of firewood, had a ton of layers on but we're still freezing our asses off. And then of CO2 detector went off cause it was low on battery but we didn't know at the time if we could actually have a carbon monoxide poisoning risk cause of the fire and possibly a break in our furnace. Turned out to be false but was still fucking scary to deal with when we had literally nowhere else to go. Just being in a house wondering if you're poisoning yourself since outside is a literal blizzard.
We try to find a hotel but everywhere is without power and the roads are covered in ice. The next day we do find one, but could only find a no pets allowed one. I am not leaving my cockatiel and two budgies to freeze to death in our house, this is an emergency so I decide to sneak them in. Everything goes alright, until 12:30 am. And the fucking hotel alarms go off. You always see those signs in hotels pointing to emergency exits, and never think you'll actually have to use it. The alarms are blaring occasionally with a "fire, fire, carbon monoxide detected" being played, great to have 2 CO2 scares just within a few days. My birds are freaking out, I'm worried they're gonna have heart attacks, the one fucking time I sneak pets into a hotel and this happens. I run out of the hotel with them, go into our car. Even if they did figure out we had birds they'd be pretty ballsy to try to kick us out after this. Turns out there wasn't a fire, but a burst pipe and someones room flooded. Are fire alarms supposed to go off because of that? No idea but anyways, the alarm goes on for an hour, the firefighters show up, and then the alarms turn off. On all floors except ours. My mom asked the front desk and they said they're just waiting for the alarm company to turn if off. So we wait in our car for another hour and a half, switching between turning if on and running the heat and off to conserve gas. My ears felt like they were going to rupture for 20 mins after I left the hotel, and I think I'm coming down with something. 3 am and we can finally go back in, have fun trying to sleep when you're worried about the alarm coming back on.
Anyways the power came back on around Friday/Saturday, it was on for about probably a day and we weren't told cause we were literally couch surfing and the power company's communications is run by monkeys on typewriters. And a pipe burst. Over our living room. And it is completely destroyed. The wood floors buckled and are ruined, the wall and ceiling are ruined the front door is ruined and won't close, luckily we managed to salvage the carpet, but the other furniture's surfaces are ruined. The walls are going to have to be torn down and replaced. Oh and my closet got destroyed, I lost a bunch of shit and clothes, but thankfully my work pants survived, wow thanks... And throughout all of this I'm pretty sure I had the flu, the one time I put off my flu shot. Oh and the living room is where we have our fireplace and were sleeping in front of it so we put my mattress out there and it was destroyed. So I am sleeping in the guest room.
There's a bunch of other shit I've omitted cause this has been long enough, but holy shit this has been one of the worst weeks I have had in recent memory. In a few months when prices are down we are going to buy a shitload of emergency supplies. I have been genuinely fucking depressed and had multiple mental breakdowns.

Les Amis (& co.) and what they’re like camping
Enjolras: Is kinda scared of the woods. Also he’s that guy that really has a hard time putting his phone down because “I just have to respond to this one email”. “Yeah give me one second I’m dealing with a work thing”. “omg did you hear about what’s happening in Canada? It’s horrible those poor people” “Enj the point of this is to get away from everything for a couple days” “Right I know…”. So if there’s even one bar of service they gotta go find a different place. When he isn’t on his phone he’s very active in all his friends activities. He’s not super outdoors-y so he mostly tags along when other people do things. He’ll have Baz or Courf take him on rides on their paddle boards. He’ll tag along when Chetta and Ferre go on hikes. He’ll be Feuilly’s little helper person when Feuilly’s working on building the fire. Or he’ll just hand out with people at camp or on the beach of the lake/river and just talk.
Combeferre: Loves camping because of all the bugs and critters! Found the tiniest little frogs on the shore of the lake one time and made everybody look at them. Brings plant and animal and bug ID books with him and will take little leaves or flowers and stick them in the pages of the book when he thinks he found a match. He doesn’t usually snack too much when he’s at home but when he’s in the woods he is always eating something and it’s really when he’ll let himself just go balls to the wall with the junk food. The only thing he doesn’t really like about camping is that he doesn’t get to go on jogs in the morning because he’s smart enough to not run into the woods in the middle of nowhere with no service by himself.
Courfeyrac: Has an inflatable paddle board that he bought! He likes to play lifeguard and will paddle around to all his friends who are swimming and give them rides to shore. He likes to share his paddle board with his friends but he didn’t have enough money to buy a super super fancy one that has a large weight capacity so usually if someone else is on it with him it sinks into the water enough to stress him out. Also he shares a big tent with Combeferre and Enjolras and he likes to sleep in the middle of the two of them.
Joly: Invested in a super super cute small teardrop camping trailer a couple years ago. It’s easier for him to get in and out of than a tent or god forbid a hammock (Bahorel has to lift him into it then Joly wants to get in one… this is also partially because Bahorel sets up all the hammocks and they are p much impossible to get in unless you are also 6’7”) The inside of the camper is just a bed and the back hatch opens up to cabinets and drawers and a counter and stuff that makes a nice little make shift kitchen. He’ll set up the camp stove and the cooking area right next to it. He’s not super involved in any of the cooking it just gives him less stress when the food area is organized and the table legs are on a flat surface.
Jehan: Jehan tells the ghost stories. They aren’t very good at telling ghost stories so nobody really gets scared (except for Marius and if they’re really doing a good job Enj will get a little spooked). They also wake up with the sunrise so they’re up and ready to start the day at like 5am… and they really aren’t quiet about it so they manage to wake up 2/3 of everybody else at camp. Has more dietary needs than other people so when every one gets together to build a grocery list and meal plan for the trip they’ll make their own list. They really don’t mind because they HATE sharing snacks so having their own little baby cooler all to themselves is the best. Bousset: Somehow manages to have the most amazing balance and can get on and off Bahorel or Courf’s paddle boards like it’s nothing but when he gets in the canoe with anybody they somehow always tip it over within like 20 seconds. He is the opposite of Jehan he’ll sleep until like 2 in the afternoon if one of them doesn’t come to wake him up. He’s also usually in charge of getting all the booze together for the trip bc he’s very aware of what everyone likes to drink. He takes turns with Chetta sleeping in the trailer with Joly since not all three of them can fit. When he’s not sleeping in the tent he’s sharing a tent with Grantaire.
Feuilly: Fire guy. Loves the fire. Is always excited for the sun to go down so he can start the campfire. Will not take his eyes off the fire. I mean seriously. They once played never have I ever and when it got to be his turn they timed him to see how long it would take for him to realize it was his turn bc he was too busy staring at the fire to pay attention (it was a solid 4 minutes). Sleeps in a tiny little one person tent that would make anybody else claustrophobic but he LOVES it. He does set up a hammock right next to Bahorel’s. He doesn’t sleep in it but the two of them will take naps together in their hammocks. He also has to dowse his body in SPF 10000000000+ because he’s the whitest person ever, and somehow he still manages to get a sunburn on some part of his body.
Bahorel: He’s the guy thats super picky about the camp spot. “eh i mean this one is cool but it’s a little too close to the other campsite and I don’t wanna be that close to other people thats the point of this trip is to get away from everybody.” “This one WOULD be perfect but it doesn’t have good access to the lake so it’s gonna be hard for those of us that have boats to get down there” “Bahorel the boat ramp is like 1/8 of a kilometer away we can just walk down to that…” “i mean we COULD… but it just kinda sucks” Also Bahorel has this super nice hammock system with like a bug net and a rain tarp, he will not sleep on the ground because he is scared of bugs and also the baby boy likes getting rocked to sleep. He always follows Feuilly around when he’s looking for a place to put his tent and he’ll set up his hammock right next to him. And he WAILS to Feuilly when they get back home because his SKINCARE ROUTINE GOT MESSED UP FEUILLY OHHH MY GODDDD
Grantaire: Not super big on camping but if he’s with his friends he’s having fun. There’s something about being in the woods that makes him quiet… but not in a sad way. He feels really peaceful when he isn’t dealing with a bunch of people in a big city (Even tho he loves the city). He always brings stuff so that he can draw or paint the mountains or his friends on the lake but he usually doesn’t get enough time to really make anything more than a sketch. He’s not scared of water but he avoids going in the lake if it’s not a part of it that’s deeper than his tummy. He won’t get in the boats unless there’s a lot of coaxing (usually by Enj)
Marius: LOVES being in the woods. I mean really loves it. Surprisingly it’s usually Marius that sends out the text to the group chat that’s like “hey is everybody free in a couple weekends? I wanna go camping!” He just really doesn’t like going by himself or going with just one or two people. He wakes up super early as well and usually will sit with Jehan and share coffee waiting for everybody else to wake up. Sometimes the two of them will go on a little walk together. He winds down pretty early in the evening though since he wakes up so early and is usually ready for bed by like 8:45pm. He’s also that guy that wants to eat all the berries on the bushes they walk past and has almost given Combeferre a heart attack like 7 times.
Eponine: She’s… alright to camp with. She gets kinda grumpy in the mornings because of how cold it is but she warms up (both temperature wise, but also her mood) once she’s eaten and it’s gotten warmer out. She really just likes to lay in one of the communal hammocks and read book after book. She’ll also tag along with Gavroche on a lot of his little adventures. When she’s not with Gavroche or letting Combeferre show her all the little bugs and cool plants he found, she just sunbathes. For HOURS straight. Going camping for her is just a really long fun weekend to get her tan on.
Cosette: She’s so fun to camp with!! She’s like… the best person to camp with. She always does the planning and researches everything there is to do at and near the campsite. She knows all the hiking trails nearby and what areas have service and which ones don’t. She knows which campsites have lake/river access. She also makes the best camp coffee. It’s really the only time she drinks coffee unless it’s like… finals week or she’s got an early flight or something. She also ALWAYS has to tell her dad where they’re going. She shares her location and route with him on the drive there and texts him to let him know she’s about to lose service and texts him the second she has a bar of service. He’s just very protective and she wants to make sure that he knows she’s safe. Plus if anything DOES happen he knows where she’s going and can come save the day.
Musichetta: She sleeps like the entire time she’s camping. She’ll wake up in the morning and move from her tent or the camper and go lay in one of the communal hammocks near the fire ring and doze off with her hot chocolate… which she has spilled a couple times. Once it warms up a little she’s walk down to the lake or river and lay down, get her tan on, and take a nap. One of her favorite things is to go on hikes with Combeferre. He’s one of the only people in the group that can keep up with her. If they go with other people usually by the time they reach the end of the trail the rest of the group is about 2 miles behind them. One of the best parts of camping for her is going home and showering after not showering for like 3 or 4 days.
Gavroche: Spends the entirety of the first day trying to find the perfect tree to put the perfect swing on. He also likes to try to find any big rocks near the campsite and go bouldering and run around on top of them. He still really has that childhood curiosity about everything and no fear. He’ll run off trail trying to find deer or elk. If he doesn’t get back home with a couple scratches or bruises he doesn’t consider it a good camping trip. He also will swim out to Bahorel’s paddle board and Bahorel will grab him out of the water and throw him back in. Gavroche thinks it’s the most fun thing in the world even though he’s growing really fast and it’s taking a little bit more muscle every year for Bahorel to throw him as far as Gav wants him to.
#this was so fun to think about and write#I love camping so I got to just talk about how much I love camping#Also sorry Bahorel is mentioned in like almost everybody else's paragraph#I tried to keep the cross headcanoning to a minimum but at the same time it was fun writing about how they all interact with each other#tag yourself if you want#I am definitely combeferre#minus the going on jogs thing because FUCK THAT#also I have a super nice hammock setup so shoutout to myself for inspiration for that#les mis#enjolras#combeferre#courfeyrac#jehan#joly#bousset#feuilly#bahorel#marius#cosette#musichetta#eponine#gavroche#grantaire

Author’s note: This fic is a little different from my usual work, so I’m a little nervous about publishing it. If you do like it, would love if you leave a comment / reblog / anything!
If you’d like to be included in the taglist, do drop me a msg/ask!
‘It’s for my mother’s birthday’, Akaashi says, and the florist tilts her head in thought, a dimple appearing on her right cheek.
‘What about pink carnations? They’re pretty and well within your budget’.
‘Good choice – plus it means that I’ll never forget her’ he says, nodding in approval and she bustles around to gather her materials, fingers nimbly twining tissue and ribbons around the blooms.
‘Oh - ’, he begins to say in surprise when he notices she’s included a bunch of baby’s breath in the little bouquet, because a university student’s budget only stretches that much.
‘Don’t worry, it’s on the house’, she hastily reassures him, her curly hair bouncing as she shakes her head. ‘I just thought it’s sweet you’re buying flowers for your mother.
‘Thanks.’ He smiles at her. She grins back and promptly trips over her own feet as she hands the bouquet over to him. ‘Watch out’, he calls, reaching over the counter to grab her elbow in an attempt to steady her.
‘Sorry! That’s so clumsy of me. Um – I’ve been meaning to ask you for some time, but would you like to grab coffee with me someday?’ she asks, cheeks flushing as pink as the flowers in his arms.
‘Oh’, he says, dumbstruck. ‘I – uh’
She must read the hesitation in his face because she shakes her head self-deprecatingly, saving him from floundering awkwardly. ‘Sorry! I don’t know what came over me – please forget I ever said that!’ Then she bows and ushers him out of the store, waves away his apologies with a laugh and calls after him to ‘please come again!’
His mother fusses over him when he presents his bouquet of carnations to her, bending down to press a kiss to her cheek. ‘Why does it look like university is treating you so badly?
‘I’m fine, mum’, he tries to distract her with a hug, but she’s having none of that.
‘Are you really, Keiji?’, his mother asks, lips pursed. ‘I know my son well enough to know he’s not sleeping well’.
‘I try’, he offers, but he knows his excuse falls flat when she sniffs. He’s so irredeemably busy with school work and internship that sleep is practically the last item on his list of priorities and things to do and tasks at hand, but he knows if he breathes a word about the amount of work on his plate, his mother would nag him relentlessly until she’s convinced he’s taking care of himself again
So honed by years of dealing with Bokuto-san, he switches tactics to diversion. ‘So mum, tell me how auntie managed to talk Yuji-kun into going on blind dates?’ His mum brightens and immediately turns her mind to her favourite nephew’s dismal love life.
But his mother insists on him staying over that night, so he finds himself staring at the ceiling of his old bedroom, in a bed that suddenly feels too small for the worries that adulthood is cramming into his head. He’s patient, counting the spaces between his breaths but sleep eludes him and he sits up, determined to sneak in more work at the very least.
He tucks a pencil behind his ear, ready to get cracking on his thesis when he tilts his seat too far on the back two legs of his chair and loses his balance, falling onto the floor with a thump. ‘Damnit’, he curses quietly, hoping the noise doesn’t startle his mother awake, but from his vantage point on the floor, he can see the omamori he inexplicably refused to throw away on New Year’s Day hanging on the bars of his windowsill.
‘What are you doing here’, he mutters, untying the charm and running his thumb along its fraying seams. The charm obviously does not respond - it’s an inanimate object after all, but for some reason, he slips it in his pocket when he returns to the dorm when morning comes.
The frequency of his dreams starts to increase.
He’s back in her body, curled up under a pine tree on a cool autumn day.
‘I can’t believe you convinced me to spend an afternoon running around like a forest nymph when we could be studying to ace your exams’. There is a tinge of disdain in his words because he knows her grades are better than decent, though they’d be better if only she’d spend more time on her books instead of flower fields.
‘Aww, a nymph? Someone’s feeling extra poetic today’, she teases lightly.
‘Don’t try distracting me from the fact that you really should be studying’, he insists, displeased.
‘I do study’ she protests, but he hums disbelievingly, the spectre of Waseda’s devilishly difficult entrance exam looming in his mind.
‘Not enough to get into a decent university at this rate.’
‘I don’t want to go to university, Keiji, I’ve tried telling you this before’, she sighs.
‘You don’t?’
‘Nope’ she responds, popping the word in her mouth. ‘I just want to sell flowers to people someday, is that so bad? It’s simple - they make people happy, and that makes me happy in turn. If we only have a lifetime to spend on this earth, shouldn’t we pursue what truly brings us joy instead of dreams others impose on us?’
‘ I suppose that makes sense’, he says, sounding vaguely convinced.
‘Course it does’, she responds easily, a smile flickering in her voice. ‘I always make sense. Now. Let’s not squabble, it’s my turn to tell you a story today’.
So he listens, enthralled despite himself, as she spins tales of the Kodama, tree spirits dwelling in the ancient forest, how her mother taught her to always offer a prayer to the gods before chopping down a tree - and if the tree bleeds, to back away because it means it has a Kodama living, breathing within it.
‘Are they real?’ he asks her, when she finishes a tale of a Kodama who assumed human form after falling in love with a maiden blessed with cherry blossoms in her cheeks.
‘Of course they are’ she laughs. ‘If you close your eyes and listen carefully, you can hear them sing. ’
He closes his eyes, but the forest remains eerily still. ‘ I don’t hear anything, ’ he says, disbelief colouring his tone.
‘Maybe it’s because they know you don’t really believe in them yet.’
He wakes up with the scent of pine in his nose, the lingering touch of grass against the soles of his feet.
‘Electricity is a fickle beast in this household, so the first thing you need to do when you come home is to light the fire in the irori. Even Toya-chan knows how to do that, and he’s eight!’
He stares balefully at the sunken hearth lined with stone and filled with ash, situated right in the center of the old house. ‘This is a fire hazard’, he tells her stubbornly.
‘Fire is life, you spoilt city boy! It only becomes dangerous if you don’t respect it. Now come on, or you’ll end up freezing to death and I won’t be able to save you. I always keep a lighter in my pocket and in the store room there’s coal and if really necessary, some petrol I flinched from the petrol station – ‘
‘You better make sure the teachers don’t find your lighter and think you’ve been smoking – ‘ he interjects and she continues as if she doesn’t hear him.
‘So you light the fire and hang the kettle from the iron hook, and voila! You can cook porridge or soup if electricity runs out and you can’t rely on the rice cooker or stove. And when the night is too cold to sleep in your room, you can drag your futon out here for warmth. It’s kinda nice, almost like camping. Now, let’s see you try lighting a fire yourself!’
Her fingers are thin and nimble, but they’re unfamiliar implements to him, so he fumbles with arranging the coal and scrap paper around damp wood. He has to resort to using a drip of petrol to coax the damp wood to ignite in flames but he counts it as a triumph anyway as fire dances in the sunken hearth.
He can hear her cheer – ‘Congrats city boy!’ Ignoring the implied insult in her words, he smiles.
He’s back in her skin again when her voice echoes in his mind.
‘Y’know you’re not gonna be able to learn how to put on a bra if you don’t open your eyes when doing it right?’ she says, amusement ripe in her voice. ‘Every girl has tits, Keiji . If it makes you feel better, I’ve seen your dick ’.
‘What?’ he yelps, eyes still stubbornly closed.
‘How else was I supposed to use the urinals? Goodness, being a guy is so convenient when it comes to peeing, you just point and shoot - ’
‘Right, that’s too much information, thanks’, he huffs.
‘Well, you’re gonna make me late for school if you don’t open your eyes’’, she sing songs, and he knows she’s banking on his reverence for punctuality and perfect attendance records to get him to look in the mirror, but he’s not sure it outweighs his mother’s lessons of being a gentleman.
‘Keiji-kun ’, she says again, amused. ‘I do appreciate that you’re trying to protect my modesty, but those rules don’t really apply when we’re in a situation like this, you know? If it makes you feel better, I give you explicit permission to look at my breasts when strictly necessary.’
‘Can you not say it like that’, he grouses before cracking an eye open, somewhat persuaded, and somehow manages to snap the tiny hooks in place. ‘Bras are like torture devices’.
‘Don’t I know it’, she chuckles. ‘Be glad you only have to put up with it every once in a while’.
He snorts, more comfortable once some semblance of her modesty is secured. ‘I’ll count my blessings then’. Twisting at the waist to zip up her skirt, his breath catches at a glimpse of freckles on her back in the mirror. He forgets he’s still standing in front of the mirror as his fingers idly ghost over the constellation, a spray of stardust on bare skin.
‘Keiji ?’ she asks, confused.
‘Sorry!’, he startles. ‘It’s just - I never noticed you had freckles on your back before.’
‘Yes - I’m aware I have them, and?’, she replies archly, and the irony that she’s completely fine with him staring at her breasts but not her back does not elude him, but he holds his tongue.
‘They’re arranged in my favourite constellation’, he tells her honestly and he’s relived to hear her chuckle again.
‘I’ll show you the real thing next time’, she promises, before switching seamlessly to berate him - ‘And you can stop staring at my back now, we’re gonna be late for school! ’
The next day is spent wondering if he’s a creep for dreaming about half naked sixteen year old girls – even if there’s nothing remotely sexual about his dream.
He sees her run through the woods like a fawn discovering spring for the first time, watches her come to a stop at an open clearing framed by trees. There is a shrine in the center of the clearing, cracked and covered in moss, but she approaches it reverently, dropping to her knees.
‘There is old magic in this shrine’, she whispers, brushing leaves and branches away before laying her omamori down at the altar. ‘ Do you remember the wish you made? ’
‘I wished for more time - I got greedy and asked for yesterday to come again ’, he answers, voice hushed.
‘And I wished for the exact opposite. I got impatient and asked tomorrow to arrive, as fast as it can ’, she replies, tilting her face up to the sun.
‘I suppose that’s what happened ’, he says. ‘Our wishes got tangled up, and our bodies and souls got thrown through time and space’.
‘Hm. Do you think we have souls, Keiji? ’ she asks him.
‘Yes ’, he says, sounding perplexed. ‘What else would we be swapping?’
‘What colour d’you think your soul is? ’ It’s a strange question, but he’s used to anticipating the unexpected from her.
‘Blue. It reminds me of the summer sky ’, he replies.
‘Fitting’, she laughs with a cheeky grin on her face. ‘Since the sky is a star’s domain’.
‘What about you’, he asks, so accustomed to ignoring her teasing about Bokuto-san. ‘What colour do you think your soul is?’
‘Yellow, I hope ’, she says dreamily. ‘It’s warmth and life - like flames lighting up wintry nights, or daffodils on the first day of spring’ .
He wonders if it’s a coincidence that the strange dreams hit him in full force right after he brings back the omamori.
But Kenma’s right, he’s become strangely addicted to the narrative his dreams are showing him. It’s like the books he snuck under the covers at night, emerging bleary eyed in the morning because he was intent on seeing the story end. And if he’s being completely honest with himself, it makes him feel like that he - quiet, bookish Akaashi Keiji is the protagonist in the Ghibli movies that Bokuto-san makes him watch, so he doesn’t put up a fight against the dreams that re-invade his sleep.

A Place For Us
Pairings: Arthur Morgan x F!reader
Word Count: 4,434
Summary: Arthur has let you tag along on his latest hunting trip. Only you’re now caught in a snowstorm and need a way to keep warm. (AKA the ole’ sharing a bed trope)
Warnings: Poorly written smut ahead my friends. Tread carefully. Also, I twist property law to suit my purposes. Law aficionados, look away.
Notes: Might make this a series of drabbles or something for this particular pair. Like, one about when they go hunt the bison. Might have Arthur get her the white Arabian. Maybe when they get back to the main camp they keep buying stuff to take back to “their” cabin, etc. Let me know if I should!
You and Arthur had been on the road for several days now hunting down something he called a “Ghost Bison.” While you were excited that he’d asked you to come along, you hadn’t ever traveled this far on horseback before. Your ass felt permanently glued to the saddle and you were exhausted. Not to mention that the skies were looking rather ominous today, dark clouds signaling a storm on the way.
You hadn’t mentioned anything to him, of course, since you didn’t want to mess this up and make it so he’d never invite you along again. The two of you had never really had much of an opportunity to spend time alone together before, and although you were terrified that you’d make a fool of yourself, it had been too good of a chance to waste.
Even so, despite you keeping your complaints to yourself, he still seemed to catch on easily by himself. He stopped and camped regularly enough, making sure you ate and drank plenty and got moments to stretch off of the giant Shire you’d grabbed on the way since it was the only one big enough to handle carting everything back.
Judging by Arthur’s frequent glances towards the sky, he also was beginning to share your worries about the storm. You were getting closer to where the bison was rumored to be, but finding shelter from the inevitable snowstorm was going to be difficult. Your meager tents were not going to get the job done.
Finally, after yet another full day in the saddle, and with the clouds looming above signaling the snowfall would hit at any moment, the two of you came across a decent looking cabin. To find anyone out this far into the mountains was a miracle, and you just hoped the folks living here would give you shelter without anyone resorting to violence. Hell, you’d even sleep in the small barn off to the side, no arguments. Anything was better than trying to risk the coming storm in the small tents you had.
Arthur silently signaled you to hold back while he walked towards the house. You did as you were told but brought your revolver out just in case.
“Hello? Anybody home?” Arthur called out as he raised his hands up. “Weapons are away. Just looking for a dry spot to sleep tonight!” The weapons were technically away, although the both of you had your fingers at the ready.
He rapped on the door, and after a few moments of silence tested the doorknob. It opened easily and he peeked inside, keeping his hand on his holster in case anyone was trying to get the jump on him. Finding nothing, he finally gestured to you to follow.
You hitch the horse to the porch and walk inside, surprised to find the place looking somewhat decent. It was a little dusty, but the overall appearance of the place was clean and well kept. After poking around in some cupboards, you see that the kitchen is fully stocked, which could be helpful if this wasn’t a trap. After further inspection, you also find a massive bed in one of the rooms, covered in at least four quilts and even some fluffy feather pillows. Both the living room and the bedroom boasted a good sized fireplace as well. All in all, this place seemed almost too good to be true. Where were the owners?
“You look like you’re thinkin’ what I am, so I’m gonna go take a look around outside, see if I can’t find our host,” Arthur stated as met up with you in the kitchen. “Stay around the cabin and keep your gun handy.”
“I will. Be careful.”
Arthur nods and squeezes your shoulder when he passes on his way to the door. He shuts it quietly behind him as you stare vacantly at the space he’d just left. You could still feel the weight of his hand on your shoulder, heavy and comforting. You blush at your stupidity, acting like a little girl just because some fella touched her innocently. Never mind that he’d never touched you before.
You shake it off and keep your hand on your holster as you wander around the house, taking stock of anything that might be valuable. There wasn’t much, as it seemed whoever lived here was more of a practical soul, even if the everyday things were made to be comfortable. There were no womanly touches to be found, but the person did enjoy plush linens and good sturdy furniture. You’d even found an enormous copper tub in the other room, along with a huge stash of sandalwood soap. You hoped you get a chance to use it, as you hadn’t had a proper wash in four days. There was only one bed in the house, leaving sharing the bed the only option so you would feel better about sleeping next to Arthur if you knew that you at least smelled okay.
You continue your search, rifling through a little writing desk until you find a series of letters.
“Well, well. Good to meet you, Elijah Foster,” you mumble as you read the address. You skim through the letters to find any hints of what kind of person lived here, hoping it was someone that Arthur wouldn’t have any trouble dealing with.
Based on the stack of letters, it was a single man with no family, as he often complained about having to live alone. He mostly wrote back and forth with some friend of his talking about the good ole days and swapping homestead advice. It sounded like he was just an old man.
You wander towards the back door and poke your head out, listening for anything suspicious. There was nothing more than the usual sounds of nature, which could be both good and bad. Still, you trusted that Arthur could handle himself, so you won’t too worried. Instead, you take note of the chicken coop and large garden that could prove to be handy soon, then head back into the relative safety of the cabin.
Moments later, Arthur comes in through the back door, blowing into his hands to warm them.
“Found an old fella out near the well. No wounds or nothin’. Was probably doin’ chores and his heart just gave out. I buried him not too far away.”
You nod and show him the papers you’d found. He quickly glances through them, coming to the same conclusion you did.
“I’ll go carve his name tomorrow. I want to head back out to this shed I saw on my way back right now. Looked like a smokehouse, so we might find something for supper.”
“Sounds good. If not, there are lots of things here in the kitchen too. Dear Elijah sure loved his food,” you chuckle, waving Arthur off as he heads back outside.
With the news that it seemed safe to stay, you let your guard down a little bit, peeling off your filthy jacket and hat. You set them off to the side, wondering if you could convince Arthur to stay long enough to do some laundry. You were sure he needed some clean clothes too.
Upon inspection, the wooden stove seems in perfect working order and already has a stack of kindling and wood ready to go next to it. You set the kindling inside and light it up, knowing it will take a while to get to a good temperature for even cooking. While the stove warms, you hum and go through the cupboards as you try to figure out what to make for supper. Arthur comes stomping back inside moments later, arms filled with goods and grinning happily.
“I was right about the meat. He had a whole root cellar going on underground. Found some ham, bacon, and some sort of sausages. The best part is the place was filled with home canned goods and even some fruits and vegetables. Got some peaches and apples, even found some eggs and butter. Figured we could do with a little treat.”
“We can make all kinds of stuff with that! I am starving right now, so we’ll make something quick. Maybe the sausages and a potato hash? Might have the stuff to make some fry bread with it. Then maybe a cobbler for dessert. We’ll save the bacon for breakfast and make some fried apples too.”
“If you say so,” Arthurs deadpans and settles all of his finds on the dining room table.
You quirk an eyebrow at him. “You still don’t believe that I can cook.”
“Didn’t say that, Miss. Just haven’t seen any evidence to support your claims.”
You should probably be offended, but a smiling and teasing Arthur was such a rare treat that you could only bring yourself to blush and smile back.
“I’ll show you. Out of my kitchen, mister. You should get both of the fireplaces going. The chill is really starting to hit this place.”
“Good idea. I’ll get the tub filled too. Try not to burn my food, woman.”
“So rude. Now, where did I put that poison?”
Arthur laughs as he heads outside. You focus on cooking while he comes in and out, carrying loads of firewood and huge buckets of water. The poor man was certainly getting a workout today. You were sure he was looking forward to a bath now.
Dinner was nearly done by the time he joins you in the kitchen, poking his head over your shoulder to look at the cobbler you were putting together.
“The man sure liked his comforts. That bed is big enough for four. I think the two of us will be plenty comfortable.”
You were glad he couldn’t see your face, as the reminder of where you’d be sleeping tonight must have made you resemble a tomato. You stick the cobbler in the oven to avoid looking at him and begin to dish out the sausages, potatoes, and bread you’d put together for supper while Arthur continues looking through the cupboards.
“There must be forty pounds of beans here. Could feed an army. Would be good with some of that bacon.”
“I am not making you any beans if I’m supposed to be sharing a bed with you, Arthur Morgan.”
“That’s probably smart thinkin’,” he chuckles, sitting at the dining room table as you set the plates down, along with a pitcher of water he’d pumped earlier.
You roll your eyes as Arthur playfully makes a big show of sniffing his fork before he takes a bite. Your smile quickly turns smug as his eyes widen.
“Now why in the hell have I been eating Pearson’s slop if you can cook like this?”
You giggle and take a bit of your own food, pleased as he starts to dig in with relish.
“Pearson would never give up his job. Besides, this is pretty simple. Hard to mess up sausages and hash. The real test is my cobbler.”
Arthur grunts, shoving an entire half a sausage in his mouth as he chews happily. The meal soon became a quiet affair as your hunger caught up with you as well, and the two of you went to work devouring every bit quickly. The cobbler went by just as fast, with Arthur’s moan of delight being compliment enough.
Once your bellies were full with nary a crumb of leftovers in sight, the both of you leaned back into your chairs, sighing in contentment.
“Pearson can keep cooking for the rest of them, but I’ll only eat if you cook for me. You’re not gonna let me starve, right? You’ll cook for me again?” Arthur asked as he rubbed his belly, his soft smile sending your insides fluttering.
“You’re ridiculous. Yes. If we happen to be in camp at the same time and Pearson won’t kill me for using his supplies, I’ll cook for you again.”
Arthur helps you bring the dishes to the sink and even dries them while you wash. The easy way that the two of you work together makes you feel like you’ve done this millions of times.
When everything is clean, Arthur heads to the bedroom while you sit down on the sofa near the fire and begin pulling off your boots. They have a couple of new holes after this trip, making you cringe a bit. You’ll have to find a new pair before these fall apart completely. Arthur comes out a few moments later, carrying one of his union shirts. You were very familiar with those shirts, as they were usually fairly tight on him and highlighted his impressive back muscles.
“Thought you could use something to wear to bed. You can take the bath first.”
You accept the shirt, knowing the thing will probably reach nearly to your knees and cover you well enough.
“You sure? You’ve worked hard, so I don’t mind waiting.”
“Nah, it’s alright. The water will be dirtier for you if I go first. Little thing like you can’t hold much dirt.”
You snort over your shoulder as you head to the bathing room. “You’d be surprised.”
You strip quickly once you shut the door behind you, glad that you wouldn’t have to put any of those clothes back on when you were done. Everything you had was filthy. You didn’t even have a clean pair of bloomers to wear. The coals under the tub had kept the water nice and warm, and you sighed as you slid into the blessed comfort. Arthur had even set out a couple of washcloths and a bar of soap on the end table near the tub.
As you wash the days of grime away, you peer out of the window and see that the snow is finally coming down hard. It’s probably a pretty good guess that the two of you might be snowed in here for a couple days unless Arthur wants to tough it out. You really hope he doesn’t.
You quickly finish up in the tub, wanting to leave Arthur with plenty of warm water, and dry off, wringing your hair out as best you can. You slip on the shirt and take a little sniff, pleased that it smelled like Arthur. Looking around, you find an unopened container of tooth powder, so you wet a washcloth and do your best.
You take a deep breath and open the door to find Arthur lounging on the sofa, his boots and hat already off, and he was near to dozing off by the looks of it. He cracks open an eye as you step out, then slowly sits up straight, staring at you wide-eyed as you shyly stand there.
“It’s all ready for you,” you mumble, the cold air reminding you of just how exposed you are right now.
Arthur audibly swallows as his gaze travels from your hair drying wildly and loose, to your bare legs, glimpses of your thighs poking from underneath his shirt if you shifted.
Finally, he clears his throat and picks up the clothes he had handy, holding them in front of his lap as he hurries past you. The door closes behind him without another word. You quirk an eyebrow at the door, then shrug and bank the fire in the main room before heading to the bedroom.
The bedroom is sufficiently cozy, with the fire a gentle heat now and the windows weatherproofed. You slip under the covers on the right side, knowing Arthur will want to be on the left and closer to the door. After that it’s just a matter of trying to remember to breathe despite how nervous you were.
You lose track of time and the warmth seeps into your bones, making you drowsy, and you close your eyes for a few moments. Eventually, the gush a cold air hits your face as Arthur enters the room and quickly shuts the door behind him.
The room is suddenly filled with the scent of sandalwood as the freshly bathed man settles his things around. You can hear him putting his guns on the nightstand before the bed dips a little and the blanket is moved to allow him to slip underneath.
The bed is big enough that you aren’t touching each other, but you can feel the heat of his skin and he settles onto his back next to you.
“Night, Arthur.”
“Night.”
You nervously listen to his breathing, your heart going crazy being in such an intimate setting with a man and not being allowed to touch. Eventually, you heard him drift off, and allowed yourself to follow soon after.
~
You were so damn warm. Too warm. The air around you nearly stifling your ability to breathe. Your eyes flutter open and you sleepily look around. It’s barely morning, just a hint of light showing through the window.
There’s a heavy weight across your back and waist, so you peel the blanket back to peer under. Arthur has molded himself to you during the night, his legs tangled in yours and his arm across your waist. His skin is so unbelievably hot, and you guess that’s what woke you up. Your shirt had been ridden up a little too high for comfort, but at least you weren’t completely exposed.
This was nice, though. You knew the proper thing to do would be to sneakily climb out of his tangled limbs, but it was so good. It had been a long time since you’d felt this safe and secure.
Your plan was simply to fall back asleep like this and deal with the awkwardness in the morning. As you closed your eyes and began to let the heaviness of slumber take you over again, it seemed like a great plan.
Until he shifted in his sleep, pulling your hips closer to his lap and settling something hard and warm against your backside.
Suddenly all the blood in your body pooled downstairs, making you throb and dampen as you realize what that is and how close you are to it.
You slowly peer over your shoulder and see that Arthur is still fast asleep. And apparently having a great dream, judging by the twitching appendage that was being rocked against you ever so slightly.
You bite your lip and debate stopping him. Waking him up and acting like nothing was wrong was probably the polite thing. A good girl would even smack him and demand he apologize for acting like an animal even in sleep.
No one had ever said you were a good girl.
Your hips seemed to move of their own volition, pressing harder against his erection as his movements sped up. The massive hand that had been gripping onto your waist slowly slid up until it was cradling one of your breasts, somehow gentle with them in sleep. Arthur grunted and pressed his head into your neck, nipping at the skin lightly.
You couldn’t hold back the moan as Arthur suckled a little harder on your neck, and you felt the jolt as he woke up, stilling almost instantly.
“...Y/n?”
He was trying to pull his arm off of you, but you clutched it hard.
“I’m so sorry. Fuck, I’m just gonna...” Arthur tried to pull away again, but you tugged him closer, peering at him over your shoulder. His breath hitches and you know what he sees. Your lips chewed from trying to keep quiet, hair mussed and bite marks on your neck. Debauched.
“Arthur, please.”
He gulps and settles back, letting you bring his hand back up to your breast.
“You really want this? I don’t think I’ll be able to stop once I start.”
You hum and wiggle your butt against his erection, pleased to hear his whispered curse.
“I want this. Want you.”
You can feel him nod behind you, then he slides his hand slowly down your body, reaching underneath the shirt that was now bunched up to your waist.
“Easy girl, I got you,” Arthur mumbles as his hand reaches your core.
“Darlin’ you are soaking wet.”
His fingers part your folds, circling around to gather up your essence on them before slowing slipping one inside.
“Shit, you are so ready to go. Feel so good. Take one more for me.”
His hips are slowly grinding into you from behind, betraying how excited he is despite the calmness of his voice. He slowly slides another finger inside as his thumb circles your clit.
“There’s a good girl,” he groans against your neck.
You can’t help the little giggle that escapes.
Arthur props himself up to lean over and look at your face.
“What is so darn funny? Ain’t polite to laugh while a fellas trying to make you feel good.”
“I’m sorry, it feels amazing. Really. You’re just so adorable I couldn’t help it.”
“Adorable?” Arthur crinkles his nose like you’d just insulted him.
“You talk to me like I’m your horse,” you giggle again, unable to stop it.
He groans with embarrassment and presses his face back into your neck.
“Just have to make it so you can’t laugh then.”
He pulls his fingers out, leaving you feeling horribly empty. You can feel him messing around with his own pants, trying to pull and kick them off under the covers. Then he picks up your leg and slings across his hip, his cock now laying heavy against your core.
He slides it around, coating it before settling it against your opening.
“Last chance to back out. You sure you want me?”
“Yes. Do it, please.”
Arthur slides in embarrassingly easy, grunting and tightening his hold on you as he fully sheathes himself.
“You are so tight. I’m worried I’m not going to last long,” he mutters as he starts to thrust.
You are pretty sure you’re not going to last either, because you’d barely started and you could feel your orgasm building up. You could hear how wet you were, every thrust creating an embarrassing squelching sound. He speeds up, his hips slamming into you, and the room is filled with the slaps of skin on skin. You can’t even think anymore, the only sounds you’re capable of making are whining and grunting his name. Arthur leans across your back to kiss and suck on your neck, one of his hands reaching under you to rub your clit.
“You feel so good, darlin’. You’re so tight and wet. And you sound so pretty. Am I making you feel good?”
“Yes! Please, I’m so close!” You moan loudly, thrusting your hips back to meet his.
“Oh god, sweetheart, I’m going to cum soon. I can’t hold off anymore. Cum with me.” He whispers in your ear, biting the lobe, and you let go, screaming his name into the pillow. He thrusts hard three more times and cums with a loud, guttural groan into your neck. You both stay like that, breathing heavily as you come down and he strokes your stomach. After a minute, he finally pulls out, leaving you cringing as you feel yourself spill onto the sheets.
It’s quiet as you both catch your breath. You can hear Arthur’s heartbeat slowing down as you lay on his chest. You wanted to know what this all meant. If this was just sex for him or if he was sweet on you. You had no idea how to go about asking him without sounding desperate.
“I can hear you overthinking.” He chuckles into your hair. He leans back and tilts your chin up, forcing you to meet his eyes.
“So what’s it gonna be? This a one time thing, or is it more?”
“I’d like it to be more,” you answer shyly, and he seems pleased with your response as he pulls your closer to him and leans over to peck your lips.
“Alright. We can do whatever you wanna do. You call the shots here.”
“Well, I don’t know how smart it is giving me that much power, Arthur Morgan.”
He chuckles, grabbing a handful of your hair and playing with it.
“Don’t think I’d mind if it’s you.”
The two of you fall into a comfortable silence for a few moments before the urge to find the outhouse became too great. After taking care of business and freshening up, you make breakfast while Arthur goes looking through all the papers in old Elijah’s desk.
“Here, look at this one.”
You wipe your hands off on the dish towel and hold the paper near the window, seeing that Arthur has found the deed to the property.
“You know,” Arthur says thoughtfully, rubbing his hand across his beard. “He didn’t have nobody else. It’d be easy as hell to write something up and say he sold it to us. Go to town and have ‘em file it up. It could be ours.”
You stare at him in wonder. “Really?”
“Not gonna leave the others in the dust, of course, but we could have a place out here for when we need it. Or to just get away sometimes. Just the two of us.”
You’re absolutely beaming with you throw yourself at him and he pulls you into a hug, placing a kiss onto the top of your head.
“A place for us.”

Last Year’s Misadventure on the Superior Hiking Trail
I sit here today at Trout Creek Camp on the Superior Hiking Trail, every time I come out here people say it will be flowing… yet again! Trout Creek is dry, I’ve never seen any water over there. Anyway, I’m here today on day 0, I never really count the first day because you have to get where you’re going before you head out, I mean I usually spend the night before on the trail then begin the real hiking. So, less than 2 miles today.
This is the most people I’ve ever seen at the Trout Creek Campsite, there is a group of 8 young people here and I see a lot of heavy gear, including, a full-size ceramic coated pot, the thing is HUGE! I ain’t seen one of the things since the last time I went to a group camp for a school trip.
I don’t plan on eating tonight because I ate way too much on the way up here, I knew that’s how it would go so I didn’t pack any food for today. Water on the other hand, well I’m drinking a lot, temperatures are great, nice and cool, but it’s been a while since I’ve been out here. I noticed my water filter is a little tight, hopefully, it doesn’t clog, the problem isn’t the filter, the problem is backflushing a filter with sink water, I’ve heard there’s too much gunk in sink water and it calcifies the filter, user error. Sawyers are getting cheaper these days so I’ll grab another one before my next adventure. Also, they have a fitting so you can backflush with your clean water bottle. I totally have to get one of those, it just makes so much more sense than the plunger.
Once again, I proved the scent proof bags I use for a food bag liner work. Because yet again a chipmunk hopped right passed the bag was laying on the ground. While we are on the subject of food bags, Trout Creek Camp can be a pain to find somewhere to hang your food.
Day 1, Trout Creek Camp to Devil’s Track
I lost the top to my phone mount, so… no cool overlook pictures. I left trout creek this morning and managed to make it to Devil’s Track! I had to descend into the canyon at Devil’s Track at night which seemed sketchy as the edge of the trail was pitch black. I can only assume there’s a cliff there. I’m very interested in seeing what’s out there, I’m staying at the west camp. It seems nice, today was my first ever 20-mile day! The new insoles are working great. Before I wouldn’t even have attempted 20 miles, my feet would start feeling like this after 10. Mission success, I’m not going to bother eating, I took a break at the Pincushion Mountain Trailhead and ate some jerky and banana chips there. Shame, I was looking forward to a hot meal. I managed to gather a liter of water in the dark, I drank half now and I already know I’m going to wake up in the night thirsty so I’ll save the rest for that, perhaps I’ll make the Ramen for breakfast.
Day 2, Let the Misadventure Begin!
I was doing so well, but my sawyer bag ruptured, the sawyer was just too calcified to work right, it too much pressure to filter the water and BAM, the bag separated at the top. It’s just sitting over there taunting me. I have some bad luck with water filters, on the thru-hike, last year, guess what? Yep, the filter failed. So now I have to turn back. Lesson learned, don’t backwash sawyers with tap water. Another lesson also finally learned, bring a backup for water treatment. Boiling does not count! It takes way too long to cover good ground when you have to boil. I’m thinking about iodine, it’s easy, fast and light. But it tastes horrible, I’ve used it before in a 2-week excursion in the Canadian side of Lake of the woods, fortunately, someone had a filter. That was a long time ago, back when the only filters available were like $300+ and clogged pretty fast.
Just remember, with important things like water when you are out in the wilderness, redundancy is key. What would happen if I needed to get off the trail ASAP and boiling was just delaying me? Could become a life-threatening situation pretty quick.
I was able to get off the trail, I hiked back to the Pincushion Trailhead, then through Grand Marais and most of the way to Cascade River State Park along Highway 61 before finally I was able to hitch a ride, two guys in a big truck really helped me out. Also, that was the third time I’ve had to hitchhike, so 3/3 success rate, I have nothing to complain about.
I already ordered a new filter, I’m waiting at base camp until it arrives, then I’ll head back out.
Although I failed to complete my challenge, from the beginning this has been about hiking 20 mile days, which I succeeded. Then completing the North Country Trail hike 100 challenge. So, there will be an update in route but nothing is gonna stop me from getting the 2018 patches. NOTHING.
The Updated Route
The new route is pretty much the same as the old one just shorter as I am running out of time to complete the 100-mile challenge. With my existing 40 miles the below route will total 100.7 miles:
Cascade – Bally creek pond 11.2 (Hike 50 Challenge complete) Bally Creek pond – Devil’s Track 10.5 Devil’s track – Kimball 9 Kimball – Devil’s Track 9 Devil’s Track – cascade 21 (hike 100 challenge complete)
One last push on the way back to cascade doing 21 miles, I know it can be done! I’ll have a nice state park campsite and a shower waiting for me when I get back.
Pre-Hike Again, in Grand Marais, Artists Point, and Cascade River State Park
I stopped in Grand Marais to eat some pizza with a view before heading to the campground. Artists Point is a great place to stop and eat some food from town.
This time I’m staying at the Cascade River State Park Campground, got site #30 non-electric, close to the showers, this is great for a tent, there’s a little spot inset in the back to set up. Also, in case you are wondering, the Cascade River State Park shower facility has always been clean and well maintained every time I’ve been here. It’s a newer facility and I have to say it’s my favorite out of the North Shore State Parks. I do have one problem though, the vending machine in the trail center used to have root beer, now it doesn’t and that is disappointing. I’m already settled in and don’t want to go back into town.
Cascade River State Park to Bally Creek Pond Camp South
I head out around 7 – 8 am, had a smooth start for the most part. The GoPro already died, it just can’t handle 40° nights…
I’m taking a lunch break alongside the cascade river, as you can see from the photo below, it was a nice place to teak a break!
Made it to bally creek pond camp south, I’m staying here for the night. Boy, it’s chilly with the wind blowing out here.
The water at the bally creek campsites comes from the pond, filtered with a sawyer it tastes earthy but clean. The CNOC bottle I got works great! It grabs 2 liters out of the pond real fast. Check out the Cnoc Outdoors Vecto 2L Water Container, 28mm, Orange on Amazon – https://amzn.to/2QOJGkG *.
I still have a breakfast bar, a cliff bar and a Ramen that I can eat today. I had a 400 calorie candy bar for breakfast so I have some extra food for today. I need to wait until at least 6 pm to make the Ramen. I want the warm food in the belly closer to bedtime. I’ll have to wait until then to use the new BRS stove – https://amzn.to/2yiQRui *. I boiled 2 cups at basecamp with it and I was impressed. I’m looking forward to using it the field.
A Rainy Day Back to Devil’s Track West Camp
Sleeping pad has a small leak, had to reinflate several times throughout the morning. I’m not going to be able to find the leak without soapy water, so I’ll just be dealing with it for now. I have the REI flash all season (regular wide), I do like it but people have had some problems with it. I’m hoping this is just a pinhole leak. Otherwise, if I can’t find the leak I’ll return it.
Oh, boy did it rain today! Started around when I left camp and stopped when I got to Devil’s Track West. My poncho did a great job keeping everything dry, it’s heavy but it works so well, I don’t really want to replace it. My hat worked beautifully as well, keeping my head dry from the rain. My shoes are soaked, not much I can do about that. I’m more concerned that the temps for the rest of the hike have lows down to 32° and my sleeping pad is leaking… If I could find the hole I could patch it.
Quite the Superior Hiking Trail Misadventure
I’m at Devil’s Track Camp West, AGAIN. It’s going to be a cold night at 34°, I timed the leak on the sleeping pad. It lasts 19 minutes until my butt hits the cold ground. I put my z-seat under there, that should buy me some time before my core touches the ground. It’ll be cold enough to instantly wake up. At that point, I will reinflate the sleeping pad. It’s too dangerous in these temperatures not having a trustworthy sleeping pad. Once again it’s time to turn around… The sleeping pad completely failed. It’s gonna be a rough night, I miss my x-therm, I should have just got the long version, that would have lasted.
At least the North Country Trail Hike 50 is complete…
Just missed the freeze!
Being out on the trail without a sleeping pad in freezing weather is dangerous, the ground will suck the heat right out of you, leaving you hypothermic. I pushed hard over 20 miles to get back to cascade, gear heavy with water from the rain days prior, boots soaked through, the big freeze incoming, and freezing lake winds the pierce right through your entire being. But I made it back so hey, I call it a success…
So I’m off the trail again, but I still have a reservation at Cascade River State Park Campground for Sunday. I’m going to day hike the remaining 20 miles, 10 on Sunday and 10 on Monday. I’ll still be pushing forward to cover the previous route but I won’t be camping on the trail, I’ll be in the nice warm camper car.
Pincushion Trailhead to Woods Creek Camp and Back
I spent the better part of two weeks trying to cross the bridge over the Devil’s Track river, and finally today there was no gear failure! It’s crazy to think I had gear fail in the same place twice in a row, the filter and the sleeping pad.
The views from this side of the river are spectacular as you can see from the photo of Devil’s Track Canyon and Lake Superior on the horizon. This was taken near the Barrier Falls Overlook, which at first was disappointing because you can’t see Barrier Falls, too many trees in the way. It took some effort to finally get out here given the gear situation but it was still well worth it.
After the hike, I stopped at the Angry Trout Cafe and had a bison tenderloin and it was absolutely delicious, so much that I had to share it here!
Lindskog Rd Trailhead 5 miles Out and Back
Today I was leaving Cascade River State Park to finish the hike and a wolf walked right up to my car! Got about two feet away and slowed down before continuing on up the entrance road. I was so stunned by the unexpected encounter that I couldn’t even grab the camera to shoot some photos. Part of me is disappointed I didn’t grab the camera, but it is more important to capture the memory of an experience in your mind before taking pictures, I’m an adventurer, I don’t consider myself a photographer. My adventure is more important to me that capturing it on film, but it would have been pretty sweet. Back to the hike!
This was a pretty average hike for me to be honest, the trail follows woods creek for a while. I noticed that the water is so much clearer here, I refilled my bottles at Duffree Creek and the water is almost crystal clear with just the slightest brown tinge from tannins in the water, which is common in the forest. The most notable part of this hike was the length of this unobstructed view of Lake Superior from the trail, I don’t believe this is even an “official” overlook, It’s just part of the trail.
Finally, I Finished to NCT Hike 100 Challenge!
This is the second year I have finished the North Country Trail Hike 100, and this year they also had the Hike 50 Challenge which I also completed. I think this is a great program that motivates not just people like me, but everyone to get out there and hike the NCT in their state. Minnesota is fortunate that the Superior Hiking Trail follows this route, not only do you get some nice patches, but you also get great memories and the best views in the entire state.
I’ve been many places in my lifetime and I still stand by my saying that the north shore of Minnesota is the most beautiful and unique place I’ve ever been.

Laid-Back Camp - Episode 08
Food in me, let’s do this. It’s Laid-Back Camp, episode 08! Here we GO!
-It’s to school, where Aoi has to meet up with Chiaki…Chiaki who is sick as a dog, and fucking freezing, in the club space despite being in her winter sleeping bag. And her attempts to get warm just mean a lot of wiggling.
-Opening!
-Episode 08: Exams, Caribou, Steamed Buns, Yum!
-Okay, what’s Chiaki got to show? It’s…A portable table set! A little mini skillet, a tiny folding table, a whole nice setup that she gathered up…And she cheated by using a cheap kitchen rack for the table, so a lot of it was actually pretty cheap.
-New question, where’s Nadeshiko? With exams coming up, she’s probably home studying! Nope she’s off on a trip sending photos left and right. She had a deep and heartfelt moment with a dog in the back of a pickup truck. She’ll never forget you, pickup truck dog. Also, despite looking like the smart one, Chiaki is terrible about studying…And also learns that her fancy wooden bowl is not supposed to be used for, well, lots of stuff. No hot foods, no foods with strong odors, no hot water…It’s pretty much a decorative bowl.
-But the internet soon produces an explanation why! The lacquer that keeps it from staining can melt from heat and end up in your food. That’s bad. (But it also comes with a free frogurt. That’s good!) Anyways she’s completely lost all focus on exams because of this damn bowl.
-Meanwhile Nadeshiko’s waiting at the train station. When the winter break comes, there’s the question of what she’ll do over the holidays. Maybe she’ll go see her grandparents for New Years. And then there’s Christmas…(SPEND CHRISTMAS WITH RIN DO IT DO IT DO IT)
-Back at school. Chiaki has commandeered a science room to fix up her wooden bowl and her new cast-iron skillet. First to season the skillet, which is to say to remove the rust-proofing and then work layers of oil into it. It’s a steady process, but the results are worth it. And Chiaki is roped into this…Which really sucks when she manages to get a burn off the super-hot skillet.
-As they’re chatting, that’s when Saitou-san finds them! And Chiaki also gets burnt. When the skillet is done, it gets a pass with some orange peel, and after a scrub is finally fully seasoned. And the bowl is down, too! Yayyyyyy.
-Also Nadeshiko wants to gather the whole crew up for a holiday camping trip. Except Aoi can’t go, she’s spending it with her boyfriend. …You have a boyfriend?! Okay, she’s kidding. No, she’s spending it with her family. You have a family?! Chiaki might be a little possessive. Also since Saitou-san is here, they try to rope her in, naturally. But she’s a serious, studious type, so she’ll answer after her exams are over.
-Back to Nadeshiko, who gets a ridiculous photo from the others as they’re full in on the Christmas camping idea. Yay! Oh and that night, Chiaki learns that her acacia wood bowl has a strong odor and you need to further prep such a bowl to use it properly. Gonna be honest, this seems like a hell of a lot of effort for a not super great bowl.
-Eventually, exams are done. Aoi did great. Nadeshiko did okay. Chiaki passed by the skin of her teeth. And they get to the stop where Chiaki and Aoi normally get off…But they don’t get off. Shouldn’t you two be…?
-This is now a hijacking. They’re going on a trip right now. And it’s into a new town that has Nadeshiko all excited, because she’s just a puppy who got uplifted…When they finally get to their destination, a huge outdoorsy-lifestyle shop! The kind of place that can get dangerously expensive. It’s a hell of a place, with everything you could desire, and Nadeshiko is being lost in shiny things. From folding chairs to jet-boil stoves to an old-fashioned gas lantern! Tragically it is too expensive for Nadeshiko to buy today, but suffice it to say she takes many pictures to build a mighty wishlist.
-We even finally get a proper look at sleeping mats, which you’d think would come up more thoroughly in a show all about winter camping. The short version is that the ground is a mighty and powerful heatsink, and will soak all the warm out of you if it’s the slightest bit chilly. So a layer of solid foam or a proper air cushion between you and the ground insulates, and lets you keep all the warm in your sleeping bag where it belongs.
-While Rin gets home just in time to get out of her school stuff and get her work stuff, only to get a text from Nadeshiko and the others. She went camping three times in a single month, and is going nuts in an outdoor shop. Yeah she’s got the camping bug.
-Danger, danger, the girls have discovered camping chairs. Which are fantastic. But the good stuff is expeeeeensive. Enough that Nadeshiko is starting to wonder if she needs to get a job just to be able to keep up with her own gear-lust. Oh, that is a feeling I know all too well. You think camping gear is bad, wait until you get into photography…
-Also Chiaki gives rumors about the new history teacher, who comes into that liquor store every day after work to get a six-pack of beers. (It’s the drinky girl from the campgrounds) When it’s time for their journey to end, they stop to get some tasty tasty steamed buns, lost in the deliciousness…Dammit this show is cruel with its food-porn.
-And Nadeshiko decides to find work so she can buy the good equipment! …Also she bought twice as many buns to take some home to her family but now they’re all gone. She’s impossible. And then Aoi ditches Chiaki with the stuff so she can go get some too, and that’s how Chiaki ends up carrying three people’s worth of stuff. Alas, poor Chiaki.
-Credits!
-Aftercredits! Rin’s back home after work and is seeing that there’s Google Street View for her area…And that is definitely Nadeshiko caught by the automatic cameras. …Fuck it, that’s our cover image today, the expression’s too good.
Another solid little setup episode. Chiaki and Aoi’s dynamic is a fun one; I wouldn’t mind a spinoff just focusing on those two dorks and their clearly well-honed banter. But with setup sorted, that means next time is time for an actual trip, in episode NINE of Laid-Back Camp! Wait for it!

Hi! I was thinking about how there are any fics about present day Mac and Dennis going camping together! Mac and Dennis decide to go camping just the two of them, the night is surprisingly going well, when a thunderstorm hits them. Take it away!
God it’s been awhile, but this prompt is finally filled! Thank you, @carkid-a! It was challenging to write, and I loved every second of it. Set during S8. Mac is hopelessly in love, and Dennis is Dennis, with a side of hurt/comfort. Enjoy!
“Are you sure this is agood idea?”
“Mac, shut up, okay? This is gonna be great. You know, it’s good to get away from the city–thenoise, the pollution, all the jackasses who think they’re the center of theuniverse.”
"Dennis, have you everactually been camping?”
"Listen, you eitherhave the camping spirit or you don’t. And, baby, I have it. You don’t needcamping experience to know that. It comes naturally.”
Mac absently wonders whenthe skills will show up.
They’re standing in aclearing in the middle of the woods. It’s just off the path that leads to thecampgrounds, far enough that Dennis can pretend they’re actually in the"wilderness,” but close enough that Mac is confident they can getback to civilization if something goes wrong.
Not that he thinks somethingwill go wrong.
It’s more the fact thattheir track record as far as trips go is…spotty, at best. Their attempt at aroad trip was hilarious as it was sad, and Mac was still angry over the incidentin the woods. He supposes they just weren’t built for this sort of life, butDennis seems obsessed with proving that they can do it. That he can doit. He doesn’t include Mac in the equation often, and Mac is painfully aware. He just can’t understand why Dennis pushes him away. He’s tried everything toget through to him, but he’s always ended up heartbroken. He hopes that thistime will be different. That maybe if they break their streak of shitty“vacations,” they can break their streak of shittycommunication.
He takes a step and narrowlymisses a tree branch that would have probably taken his eye out. His headclears. It’s probably all just wishful thinking. It always is. He pushes thethoughts down as best he can. His heart only sinks a little; he’s gettingbetter at this.
Dennis is walking around themakeshift perimeter of their campsite, looking quizzically at the ground, thetrees, the tent, back at the trees–it makes Mac anxious.
“Jesus, Dennis, willyou stop pacing? It’s driving me crazy.”
Dennis’s head perks up andhe pauses, placing his hands on his hips defiantly.
"I’m sorry Mac, did younot want our camp to be expertly optimized for any situation?”
Mac fights the urge to rollhis eyes so hard it’s almost painful.
"Dennis, it’s gettinglate and you haven’t even set up the tent yet.”
"Mac, baby, this shittakes time. Cool down and let the master do his work.” He smirks andresumes his unproductive pattern.
“Come on, dude, itlooks like it might rain. I’m serious.”
"Oh, Christ. If you’reso serious, why don’t you make yourself useful instead of just standing aroundfor me to wait on you hand and foot.”
Mac feels quiet angerboiling in his blood.
"Okay.”
Two hours later, Mac has setup ninety percent of their gear. The small camp stove, the fire pit, the food. The tent was a work-in-progress, mostly because Dennis insisted on doing ithimself. Mac is subtly assisting, handing him a rod here and there, making aquiet recommendation every so often. The key was to make Dennis think he wasdoing it on his own.
"Done!” He clapshis hands together like he’s just completed some magnificent work of art.
Mac narrows his eyes.
“Dennis don’t you thinkit’s a little small?"
Dennis deflates, glances atthe tent and back at Mac.
"Why do you saythat?”
“It’s just that it’snot quite as…roomy as I thought it would be.”
“I mean, sleeping inclose quarters is part of the camping experience, Mac…it’s the closeness tonature that really–ah, shit, I can’t do this. I’ve had it since we were inmiddle school. It, uh…seemed a lot bigger then."
His eyes dart back and forthand patches of red grow on his cheeks. Mac feels the situation spiraling.
"Well, you’re thecamping expert, Dennis. Besides, I’m sure it’ll work out fine. It’s supposed tobe cold anyway, you know, sharing body heat wouldn’t be so bad. In fact, itseems like your insight was pretty good.” He smiles.
He watches as Dennis slowlycollects himself. There’s a split-second smile of gratitude before he plasterson the smug look from earlier.
“Of course, it was.”
The evening passes them by,blessedly uneventful.
They eat shitty canned “camping food” that Dennisinsisted on buying—Mac wonders why they couldn’t have just bought normal food. Theyroast marshmallows and get the melted mess all over their hands. Dennis seemsdisgusted by the texture and artificial sweetness, but part of Mac enjoyswatching him lick it off his fingers.
When their eyes meet, though, he can’t helpbut smile, and illuminated by the fire, the expression on Dennis’s face looksheavenly.
Mac forgets all of his reservationsthe instant he smiles.
Sometimes he hates the holdthat Dennis has over him. Sometimes he feels trapped in a one-sidedrelationship. But in the golden glow of the fire and under the deepening nightsky, he feels whole. He could stay in this moment forever.
Dennis says something aboutheading to bed, and Mac thinks to protest. But he’s still completely enthralledwith the beauty of those few seconds, so he nods absently and lets Dennis leadhim into the tent. Their sleeping bags are touching, barely separated by thesliver of plastic tent-floor between them.
He lies down next to Dennisand closes his eyes.
An explosion of thunderjolts him awake.
He feels a swell of panic inhis chest as the regret starts to set in. This was a mistake, a huge mistake. All of their stuff is outside. He should have never let Dennis talk him intothis stupid trip, let his feelings, his longing for a weekend alone with him, blind him to how stupid the idea really was. Neither of them were prepared forthis.
The sleeping bag is cold andscratchy and the earth below them is solid and rough. He can feel theunevenness under his back and desperately tries to position himself in a waythat won’t wreak too much havoc on his spine. The discomfort leads to a wave ofsadness washing over him. He shivers, wrapping his arms around himself. How canhe feel so alone with Dennis right beside him? They’re sleeping next to eachother, like he’s always wanted (where did that come from?) yet the inch or twobetween their backs feels like miles, and he’s suddenly so lost in his headthat he starts to panic.
They’re in the middle ofnowhere. Mac is in the middle of nowhere. And he can’t escape because there’snowhere to run and he can’t withdraw because there’s nowhere to hide. He’strapped out in the open. He feels naked and suffocated and terrified. He canfeel his limbs trembling, and a tiny cry escapes his throat. Shit. He can’tcry. Not now. Not with Dennis– the thought is overwhelming. He tries to kickthe sleeping bag off but it’s too tight, he feels like he’s wrapped in clingfilm and he can’t breathe and everything is happening all at once. His visiondarkens and he realizes that he’s hyperventilating.
The rain starts poundingagainst the tent and his heart is pounding and everything is pounding and heneeds to feel grounded or he’s going to disappear. He can’t wake Dennis becausehe can’t move, he’s locked in his body, and his brain is trying so hard tobreak through but it can’t, he’s not strong enough, he can't—
“Mac?”
The voice is gentle andsleepy, slightly confused, but alert. The storm must have woken him up.
Mac feels a sickening mix ofadrenaline and relief. His head spins and he feels like he’s going to be sick. How is he going to explain this?
He still can’t move. Theonly noises he’s capable of making through the shallow breaths are tiny andpathetic. His hands grasp convulsively at the sleeping bag. He tries to openhis eyes but he’s screwed them shut.
"Mac?” He whispersagain, a little more urgently. “Hey…"
Softness colors his tone andhe lays a hesitant hand on the small of Mac’s back. He must be able to feel thetrembling now, if he could before. Mac feels pathetic, but he can’t stop.
"What is it? Thestorm?”
His hand is moving, strokingup and down his back so gently and so carefully that Mac wants to scream. Whatis it?
He’s gasping, tryingto get words to come out, but he doesn’t even know what he wants to say. Hecan’t tell the truth. He can’t. He doesn’t even know what the truth is? Is hescared of the storm? Scared of being alone? Scared of Dennis?
But he’s so far gone andit’s so dark and the storm is so loud. The rain won’t stop, each clap ofthunder sends a spike of adrenaline through his body. He tries to focus onDennis. Just Dennis and his hand and his raspy voice. The idea that Dennisknows something is wrong. Knows him. He wants to be known. He needs to be.
"Shit,” Dennismurmurs. He moves closer to Mac, lies right up against him and keeps strokinghis back.
His voice barely registers. The contact is overwhelming.
“Den,” Mac chokesout. It barely sounds like a word.
"There you are. Comeon back. You can do it,“ he coaxes. Any attitude from earlier isgone.
"I’m here. You’re here.In this tiny, shitty tent. In the middle of the woods. It’s probably 3 am. Iknow you feel terrible, but I’m here, and nothing is going to happen toyou.”
He lets himself focus on Dennis’svoice, try to climb his way out of the hole he’s fallen into.
He blinks and the worldcomes into focus. The dim glow from the night lamp in the corner of the tent, knocked over and hidden behind a blanket. The plastic of the floor, the coldair. Dennis’s warmth behind him, hands touching him protectively.
His head feels like it’sfilled with static. He dissolves into tears, gasping and gulping throughguttural cries. He can feel himself coming back, and he hurts. His muscles areaching horribly, tense and immobile, his eyes and jaw are sore from clenching,he can’t quite feel his hands yet. The sobbing tears through him, exhaustingand uncontrollable.
"The worst part isover, I promise,” Dennis sighs and gathers him in his arms.“Shh,” he rocks Mac for a couple seconds, “You’re okay.”
"Den-,” hewhispers. Why is it so hard to say his name?
“Yeah, I’m here.”
"You’re here,“ heechoes quietly.
Dennis squeezes him tightfor a second, letting his head droop against Mac’s neck as he holds him. Hisbreath is even and warm.

Learning to Breathe by youcomecrash (111k)
He’s playing football at one of the top universities in England and he should love everything about his life right now, but instead he’s moving backwards. How does your past fit into your present? Louis is still figuring it out.

Nick leans over. "Oh," he says, his voice smug. "Who is that?"
Harry just blinks at his phone. "Um," he manages to stammer out.
"Who's that, Harry?" Nick asks again, but this time he raises his eyebrows and smirks. Harry knows Nick is just teasing, and that he's not really looking for new Harry Styles gossip, but, um. He might have found something. Accidentally.
Harry opens his mouth to speak, but all that comes out is another 'um'. He really needs to work on translating his thoughts into words. But then it probably wouldn't be any helpful right now, would it? His mind is as blank as a newly erased etch-a-sketch.
"Oh," Nick says again, this time gleefully, seemingly having picked up on Harry's distress. "Looks like we've got a story here! Are you going to call or delete her number?"
Her number. So Nick thinks it's a girl. Well, Harry can't blame him: 'Lou' is kind of an androgynous nickname. His stylist's name is Lou.
But this Lou, well, Louis, he's kind of, really, really not a girl. He's really pretty though, which, is something.
(Or: AU where Harry's in One Direction, Louis isn't, and they reconnect over a game of 'Call or Delete'.)
Lego House by danceinstylinson (144k)
Louis Tomlinson was just about at the end of his rope, caught up in the mess he’d created for himself, stranded at the center of a maze. Harry Styles was doing just fine the way thing were. He worked at night and slept through the day. He made enough money to just get by. Everything was fine. But one night seemed to change everything. Coming from very opposite sides of town, the two boys meet. One saves the other in more ways than one, and though neither expect a future extended past sunrise, fate seems to have other plans….
lightning before the thunder by delsicle (29k)
Harry came from one of the most powerful lines of fire mages in the country. He was supposed to be a natural at magic, a prodigy, even.
But instead he was in the X-Factor contestant house kitchen at two in the morning, wearing only his pants, and he had just set the stove on fire while making snacks for his bandmates and the boy he was in love with.
like an animal (i wanna feel you from the inside) by bottomlinsons (grimgrace) (4k)
Louis leans a little closer. It’s not difficult – not with the way he’s already pressed so close, straddling Harry’s hard hips with Harry’s equally hard dick nestled tightly between his cheeks.
The paramedic clears his throat and looks away.
(Harry and Louis get a little stuck. Literally.)
Like an Endless Summer by objectlesson (87k)
“You just wanna go fawn over Styles as soon as possible,” Zayn grumbles.
“I do not. Plus, he probably got ugly this year. Eighteen is an awkward time…I bet he’s got acne and one of those terrible fuckboy haircuts all the hipsters are getting these days, with the shaved sides? Just watch, the first year we’re gonna get any time together is gonna be the first year I don’t have a stupid crush on him.”
—
Or, Louis is a riding instructor at a summer camp, and Harry is a fellow counselor who he’s been successfully managing his crush on for the last two summers. That is, until Harry shows up this year leveled up and lethal, and all Louis’s formerly perfected veneer of nonchalance melts like a popsicle in the sun.
Like Candy In My Veins by littlelouishiccups (32k)
“Um…” Harry said slowly after a moment. “Okay. That’s… this is… Let me get this straight.” He lifted up a hand and swallowed. “You told your family that you have a boyfriend… and my name was the first one you thought of?”
“Harry Potter was on TV, alright? It wasn’t that much of a stretch.” Louis pinched the bridge of his nose. He couldn’t believe he was explaining himself to Harry fucking Styles. He couldn’t believe he was stooping this low. “Forget it. I’m sorry I even thought about bringing you into this.”
Harry snorted. “What? Did you want me to pretend to be your boyfriend or something?” (Basically the A/B/O, enemies to lovers, fake relationship, Christmas AU that nobody asked for.)
like how your hands feel me up and down by ballsdeepinjesus (8k)
“How do I look?” Harry asks lowly. He turns around and gestures towards the unzipped back of his skirt for him to help. Louis stumbles forward and places a cold hand on the exposed side of Harry’s stomach, steadying him while he pulls the zipper up the rest of the way. He pushes Harry back into the dressing room and stands behind him in front of the mirror. “It’s -- you’re tight,” Louis chokes. “It’s tight, I mean. It’s. Yes.” His hand is curved around his hip now, squeezing lightly.
“Tight’s good, right?” Harry murmurs, batting his eyelashes. He almost can’t believe himself.
“Very good,” Louis grunts.

Louis gasped. “Are you straight? Oh, I'm sorry, man. You should’ve just told me; I would’ve left you alone.” “No, no, that’s not it," Harry said. "I like guys. I definitely like guys.” “OK…” “Louis, I’m ace.” Louis snorted. “Kind of full of yourself, aren’t you?” --- Or, the one where Louis is a frat boy who likes to hook up and Harry is someone who doesn't hook up ever.

"I lied when I got my job.
I told them I had a kid so I could leave early 'to pick him up from day care', to take him to doctors appointments and occasionally miss a day 'when he's sick'. Long story short – I'm in too deep. I didn't think this through.
Looking to rent a kid for bring your child to work day. Must be a boy aged 4 to 6 with curly hair who plays soccer, essentially he has to look like the stock photo in the frame on my desk. Also must be artistic as the macaroni noodle drawings I made seem a little advanced for someone his age. He also needs to respond to 'my Little Picasso' as that's what my spouse and I call him. Also I will pay extra for someone willing to play the role of my spouse when dropping him off. His name is James, he's named after his grandpa and he's a defense attorney who often brings his work home.
You know what, just message me for the details, serious inquiries only. H."
Or, the AU based off of that one Craigslist post - how a little white lie takes on an enormous snowball effect, that might accidentally include a Tomlinson too.

You have C Lunch?” Louis asks, peering over at Harry's work. The problem Harry’s just finished is printed neatly, the correct answer circled. Harry’s finger marks the next problem in his book as he copies it onto the page. It doesn’t look like he’s stealing the answers out of the back. Nice.
He’s dimpled and smart.
And probably gay.

He definitely doesn’t have time for a party.
Or, the one where Niall drags Louis to a campus fancy dress party and Louis channels his inner Green Lantern to approach the lad he's been crushing on all year.
Love’s Truest Language by summerwine (48k)
The first part was meant as a joke. He didn’t really expect Harry to buy anything. It was just Louis’ way of softening the ‘get the fuck out’ blow.
“Where’s your order forms, then?”
“I don’t want your flowers.” Louis chided before directing all of his attention to the arrangement in front of him.
Harry laughed under his breath as he stood to his full height, “Who said anything about them being for you, love?”

And we’ve got three free training videos that haven’t been seen one of them is brand spanking new that nobody has ever seen. So we’ve got that up, but that’s coming down at midnight tomorrow. So if you haven’t gone over there, by all means, head over there. If you’re watching this after the fact after Friday, that’s too late. That’s all right. You got two days to get over there and check it out. Let’s see
Bradley: Chris, what the hell are you doing over there, man?
Adam: Yeah. Chris How you doing and how’s your microphone
Chris: I wanted some attention you know like you taking too long guys. So yeah, like I’m pretty good here. happy that I don’t have to eat boatloads of foods. I enjoyed Thanksgiving last year while I was on a cut and it pretty much destroyed me. Let’s call it that way through me back two weeks so I’m happy that I can pass on that experience this year. And yeah, enjoy the cold weather in Austria like I’m super excited because it’s snowing.
Adam: Wow. Ooh, nice. Hopefully, don’t get any sound here. I’m trying to bring up something all right. Marco. I guess yeah, let’s get the Costa Rica weather update and what are you going to be up to for the next few days?
Marco: No Thanksgiving in Costa Rica. We don’t celebrate it. But I mean to all of you who celebrated hope you have a great time. I hope your table is full and that you have lots of blessings on the table. Not just for Thanksgiving, but for the rest of the year. So yeah, by all means, enjoy it now. I’m working on my charity webinars. Every year, which I do something for charity. And last year went over really well. I did four webinars. And we just had a ton of people attend. And, you know, I’m known when it’s about the kids. I’m known to give away a lot of knowledge that maybe shouldn’t go out, but I don’t care. It’s for the kids. And if you donate, you can come to the webinars, I’ll drop the donation link on the page. And anyone who wants to donate, go there and make a donation or go find me to one of the Semantic Mastery of the free group. Go to my page, right Marco Benavides. I’m on Facebook and all of the instructions are there on what you need to do to it. Turn the live webinar. Things are a good man. So when things are good, it’s good to give
Adam: most definitely most definitely yeah and be doing a little bit of that it’s good to just a general I do try to do some reflection around this time of year and think about you know, hey I’m joking about going out and being cold in the rain but it’s my choice to do it. I’m glad you know for the things I’ve got and for having not only you guys as partners, but also you know, being able to converse with people help other people out on Hump Day Hangout, so we’ll talk about this more at Christmas we got some good stuff coming up too. But we’ll concentrate on this week we got some cool Black Friday stuff coming up so like said in her non did go to semanticmastery.com/blackfriday, and then that will automatically roll over training goes away midnight tomorrow, but then we’re going to have some just killer deals coming up at 12:01 am starting Friday. I’m pumped. I’m getting excited.
So we’re real quick. I want to say though if you’re new to semantic mastery, you’re in the right place. We’re going to get to some questions here shortly. You can come here every week, just go to semanticmastery.com/hdquestions, and you can ask your questions ahead of time, which we highly encourage just keep it to one question. I know it’s tough sometimes but people start writing paragraphs and we have to skip if there are too many questions because we want to make sure we’re fair and get to all the questions. But then the next step would be grabbing the battle plan if you want step by step processes for getting results, things like your age domain or you got a new website you’re putting up or a YouTube channel or whatever it is you want to do go to battleplan.semanticmastery.com pick it up, it’s a steal, we put in a ton of awesome bonuses is a value bomb. And after that, if you’ve got clients and you’re wanting to grow your digital marketing agency or business, then come join us in the mastermind go to mastermind.semanticmastery.com and for everyone that likes saving time, that’s me, right and if you want to not only save time to get things done very very well the first time go to mgyb.co originally this stuff started out as are done for you services and things like syndication networks are always drives tech stuff we had we had certainly taught about and you could still buy the courses if you want to understand the real nuts and bolts and maybe have someone do it for you. But if you want it done quickly, and you want it done professionally had the mgyb.co, you can check it out. And we’ve added on link building, press releases, all sorts of awesome stuff, which there might be some Black Friday stuff going on. But we’ll hold off on that until Friday. So other than that, guys, do we have anything else that we want to cover?
Bradley: I don’t think so. I’m ready to answer some questions. Get the hell out.
Adam: All right. humpy says yes.
Hernan: Humpy’s cursing since today’s gonna mute myself and that Bradley dude thing.
Bradley: All right, let’s do it. All right, let me grab the screen. Sweet You guys should be seeing my screen now. Correct?
Adam: Correct. Alright.
Can You Delete A Subdomain And Redirect It To The Root Without Passing A Penalty?
So it looks like Dustin Bay was the first one up. He says if I get a penalty on the www. domain, so is the subdomain with www as the subdomain, can I delete the subdomain and redirect it to the root without passing the penalty? No, not if you’re just doing a straight redirect, you can’t do that it will pass the penalty. So, or is it better to just delete www without redirecting it and installing the site on the root? Yeah, you can I mean, you could do that because essentially, well, I think about that. Marco, what say you because I know with www a lot of the times will be. It’s still treated as a subdomain but just installing it on the root because some people will have maybe linked to you whatever’s causing a penalty, let’s see, I’ve got to admit or not there is whatever is causing the penalty could also cause it. Remember, people, if they linked to the root domain version of it, if you had your domain setup on www and they were canonicalized to each other, or they auto redirected from your root domain to the www dot version or whatever, then it if people built links to it without www in the domain, then it’s still going to be pointing links back to the root domain, even if you remove that, you know, reinstall the site on the root domain, if that makes sense. So I know if you just did a redirect from the www subdomain to the root domain and then kind of pushed the installation of the site onto the root and lost the www it would still pass the penalty. So what’s the best way to go about that Marco?
Marco: Yeah, you know, I was thinking about this question really hard and think Okay, so how, how would I do this because I’ve just lost my dub dub. And if I did any, as you said, any link building to it, because you still going to have, it depends on the penalty, right? But you’re still going to have a ton of links coming to the dub dub dub, especially the way we teach it. Because we use all variations of the URL right? When we link building, so you’re going to lose that you’re going to lose anyone who’s still and there are people who still type out www. and then the address, right, there are still people who do that. Now, you are going to pass a penalty be 301? Yes, no question. Now, what if? What if, right, so I’m just thinking like, this is theory, guys? I don’t I hardly ever do this unless I tested but this is theory. And this is something you could try. What have you said that that subdomain to no index nofollow and then have Google crawl it? I’d go into Search Console, have Google recrawl and see what it said to no index, no five And then three or one it to the non dub dub dub version or even HTTPS version right to the non www and then everything is redirected again to the HTTPS, you might lose the penalty with with with a couple of jumps and with that with a no-index nofollow on the subdomain that’s causing the problem.
Now, what’s the problem? I mean, how did they get a penalty? How do you know that it was kind of like, was it a manual? Because a manual, if you remove whatever it is that offending Google, you can request for reconsideration. So it all depends on what kind of penalty. Like why not it’s even hard to get a link penalty. Right? Because Google just doesn’t pay attention to links that aren’t relevant. Or if you’re really talented, then you send millions of links, then you get and you do get an unnatural link, you could get that. But it’s usually manuals that you get. So trying to think it through, you may, you may not pass a penalty if you do a double hop, or it might, it might take time for it to catch back up. So you’re going to have to test on this and see, but by all means, move it to the non-www. And remember that any links going to that you lose that once you remove that www, if it doesn’t get redirected, so you’re going to have to read redo all of those links, especially if you had some really powerful links coming through there. That’s what I would recommend trying again, theory. I haven’t done this. I haven’t ever tried it. But in theory, if Google sees that it’s knowing that’s nofollow, then there’s no reason for that website to be penalized anymore.
Hernan: Yeah, right. Can you real quick? This is more like a question. Can you read direct? I guess you could, like you could read direct a subdomain outside of the route and then back into the route, you could like, yeah, you know, like, so as to clean it up.
Bradley: I was gonna, I was going to suggest, you know, something that would be a little bit more elaborate because I’ve done something similar in the past, where not specifically what I’ve done it to an external domain and then redirected the external domain back to the domain that had the penalty, but just on a different subdomain or you know, a different subdomain entirely. But here’s what I was thinking might also work. Again, this is theory, but it would be putting inserting Google in the middle of it, which could absolutely reduce or, you know, eliminate any negative, you know, link equity from point coming back through, something you might consider would be like creating a G site mirrored to what the original site was. So you have the same page structure and all of that, linked from the subdomain, redirect all of that on a page by page basis to the G site and then from the G site, you can have the pages that are built with the link linking back to your root domain, right? It’s a mirror of the site anyways. Or you can even iframe those pages into the G site pages if that makes sense. So that you’re pointing any negative link equity that’s come through that. That might be why you’ve got a penalty to the G site, which we already know, the G site will clean that up and won’t penalize itself. So you’d actually be passing page rank to your money site pages on the new domain, whether its root, the root domain or whatever, different subdomain, whatever, but it would be filtering through the G site. I don’t know. I’ve never actually said I’ve done that with an external domain before but not with a G site. What do you think Marco about that?
Marco: You know, I’m really liking that, especially if you can map out your custom domain, right? The www version over to Google so that stays but you still have the G site underneath, right? Right. And that that’ll filter out any other. Yes, this is guaranteed that’ll filter out any penalty that could have. Which, but if we’d have to see what the penalties you guys, you don’t tell us what the penalty is that we can’t really give you the advice, or the answer that you need. But yeah, I mean, again, in theory, you get three on one that penalize subdomain that www, which is a subdomain, to a G site, which links over to the root where the new site was built, and it can all be the same content and Google won’t give a shit.
Bradley: That’s it, right? I mean, that’s, that’s what I would do. Because again, you’re putting an SEO shield between the penalty in your domain, right? I mean, that’s what we’re talking that’s what we talked about the SEO shield. Go check it out on MGYB and you’ll if you don’t already know what we’re talking about, and now you’re basically doing that you’re inserting part of that shield in between the penalty and the domain. So check it out and try.
What Is The Best Way To Add A YouTube Video To A Website And Maintain Site Speed?
Greg’s Up next, he says, Is there a preferred way to add a video from our YouTube channel to our website page and maintain site speed my site pages load in around one second. And I don’t want that to slow to two or three seconds as a result of adding videos. My goals are to increase time on my site, have specific videos, keep visitors on specific pages, increase views on the videos and improved website ranking by adding videos but not slow down page load times. Any suggestions? Yeah, they have lazy load plugins. You can also I know there’s some way to code that into but I know there’s if it’s a WordPress site, they have lazy load plugins that will lazy load images. And they also I’m pretty sure will lazy load iframes or whatever. So videos I’m pretty sure that you can also lazy load those which means it will allow the page to render entirely before it will start to load the images or the external iframe such as a YouTube video. Any other subject The only other I mean obviously if you use a CDN, but a CDN, I’m not sure I don’t think a CDN affects the loading speed of iframes. Because those are external sites, right? It’s just a tunnel to an external site. But CDN a content delivery network would still allow your page itself to load incredibly quick. The iframe would still be would load as slowly as you don’t have control over that the speed at which the iframe loads, that makes sense. Mark, do you have any suggestions for that
Marco: lazy load suggestions is perfect. I would say don’t be too anal about paint speed, because it’s one of over 200 factors. And we don’t know how much of a factor it is. Everything else considered. And since we teach PageSpeed, doesn’t really matter. Nothing, nothing matters. This is the three pillars, that it’s foundational principles, what we teach activity, relevance, trust and authority and how we build that up. So if you go from one second to 2.2 seconds or whatever, doesn’t matter, it’s not going to matter to anybody, especially Someone coming and they see the video, you have it in a prominent place where the person can watch the video, they’re going to wait for that video because they want to watch the video. You’ve driven them to your pace. Now if it’s taking a ton of time to render, that that might cause a big deal, but you can just do it lazy load and and have it render after the page loads and and you’re good to go.
Hernan: Yeah, There’s never like there’s there’s not a good reason why you shouldn’t be using a CDN anyways. CloudFlare being free, you know, or something like that. So you should be using it anyways. So,
Bradley: yeah, yeah, I mean, it’ll help to load the page quicker and also will load the page from multiple servers or, you know, from multiple locations. So, and also helps in case something happens where your site goes down. For whatever reason, people can still view the pages that kind of because they’re cached. So there’s a lot of good reasons to have a CDN. It’s good for security. There’s a lot of reasons for that. But it will help the page itself to load quicker. Again, it’s not going to help the iframes to load any faster because those are external sites. It’s just a tunnel to an external site within your web page, right? So you don’t have any control over that. But you can control at which point does that load so that you can tell that like, again, with a lazy load plugin, you’re basically telling the page to render before it will start to load any external iframes essentially embeds so okay. Try it and see.
Oh, let’s see. Tom says Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks, Tom. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well. Fitz. What’s up Fitz? He says on Marcus charity. Is he going to give a 30 minute call if they donate a certain amount to his charity this year?
Marco: No, this year I’ve decided to match donations dollar for dollar.
Bradley: Very cool. Okay. So there you go. Fitz. Adams got the black friday special there and we’re almost out of questions guys, which were only 20
Hernan: Sorry, sorry, Bradley. But I think Adam I’m not sure if he’s here because he needed to start driving but I think that we have a deal in the Black Friday deal that we’re doing that if you spent x you get you get some consultant time would meet with us like now with me but without
Adam: Hernan’s going to come to your house and have Thanksgiving dinner.
Hernan: Okay, give Yeah, I’m gonna cook the turkey.
Adam: And it was about say we should make it the other way. We could be like, yeah, you get an hour with Hernan you just got to go to him. So right,
Hernan: she need to fly down here. And then I yeah, we do that from Monday 3pm to 4pm and then you go back, you know, fly up another nine hours or whatever.
Adam: But um, but yeah, I wonder like a deal that we’ve got both for Semantic Mastery and mg y b, depending on you know, if you’re spending your money in both places, that’s great. And we can certainly work something out but we’ve got I don’t want to give it away but I will Go to semanticmastery.com/blackfriday on Friday or over the weekend. And yeah, you’ll be able to see what you can do there. MGYB also gonna have a great promo and depending on how much you spend you can get consulting time with the team for free as a bonus Yeah.
Hernan: Yeah, So bottom line, go to semanticmastery.com/blackfriday update that daily because the deals galore going to be there and one of them will include some consulting time with Bradley one on one. And you’d like to get like, I know. You know what I’m saying?
Bradley: Yeah. You’re all over and kiss your wife and then roll over the other way and kiss me. Well, it says pumpkin or become pie for Thanksgiving which will benefit my SEO the most well, I don’t know which will benefit the SEO but both pumpkin and pecan pie for God’s sakes, it’s Thanksgiving.
Hernan: So right when choose.
Bradley: That’s right. Lastly, Greg says it looks like we’re going to run out of questions. Which means we’re all going to get the hell out of here and go enjoy it with their families. Greg says thanks, guys will check out the lazy low plugin I do I do own and use SEO ultimate plugin from Jeffrey Smith. Good choice, Greg, by the way that’s coming very, very soon. The Pro version is coming out if you’re in the mastermind, you get access to that a hell of a lot sooner I can tell you that. But I’m really looking forward to that being launched guys. And if you are a member, I think of the ultimate plus version that you get grandfathered in at least a some licenses. I’m not sure how that works. But it’s a good choice. Neither either way, Greg, and it’s going to get better. I promise you that. There might even be a way to make them work together. Well, yeah, possibly. And that looks like it guys. So unless you got something else you want to talk about. Let’s wrap it up.
Marco: You know, if they have conflicting plugins, which we did, then all you have to do is let us know with the new version coming out, and we turn it over to the developer and the developer will take care of I mean, this is going to be fully supported that’s that’s why it’s a paid version of the plugin there is a programmer that’s behind this a developer with it. There’s a whole team behind the pro version of the plugin Plus we’re in the middle of all this too and we always take care of the people who use our products and services.
Bradley: Yeah Thanksgiving. Go Yeah, very happy Thanksgiving.
Hernan: Happy Thanksgiving everybody. I’m really I just want to say I’m really thankful for you guys for coming in asking questions. And you know, joining the group, the free the paid, really thankful for all of the support throughout this year. I’m really thankful for my partners here. So yeah, Happy Thanksgiving.
Adam: Before we go, sorry, one that I started to stomp on that Hernan and I feel the same way obviously, but I want to say something. I had three different calls yesterday. Three different people potential clients in and all of them had no firm plans for Black Friday. If you run a business where you have some sort of contacts with your potential clients or clients, do yourself a favor, write an email, send people out. If nothing else, you can always send them out a good faith or goodwill email saying, Hey, here’s all the cool deals in the industry that I found, you know, help them out. If you’ve got things you could do, or you have for sale, maybe it’s a product I service that you could offer a discount on, you know, send it, it’s not just about Oh, you’re just raking in the money. But you know, people are expecting it. I’m looking, you know, we create offers, but I’m also looking for deals over the Black Friday weekend. So, you know, don’t don’t think just because you don’t own like a physical goods store or something that you can’t get in on this. There’s a lot of cool stuff you can do. And create some goodwill, you know, amongst your network. So do it. Very cool.
Bradley: Very cool. All right. Let’s wrap it up then guys. We will see you all next week. Happy Thanksgiving once again.
Bye, guys. Yeah, run. Bye everyone. Bye bye

But we are here as always, so you know if you’ve got questions, post them otherwise, soon as we run out of questions, we’re out. So, but I’m doing quite well. You know, by the way, if anybody missed out on the Google Ads branding course, wow. It’s turned out really good. And now it’s been edited the three-hour-long webinars now been edited into like 15 lessons for that’s just session one. We’re going to do the next session on December 9th. So I don’t think you can get the early bird special anymore, but we might have something on Friday, maybe. We’ll see what happens on Friday right. Lastly, as far as for Thanksgiving I got my daughter for five days actually just got back from picking her up. She’s downstairs so she didn’t have to listen to me talk about marketing for the next hour. But it’s good because I’ve got our for five days and we’ve got two different Thanksgiving dinners planned one tomorrow, one on Saturday. And just looking forward to taking a few days off and spending it with my daughter. How about you? What are you doing?
Adam: I’m headed out to pick the unfortunate time to head to the beach. We’re going to Big Sur if anyone’s familiar with that. It’s a lot of forests. A lot of really scenic areas right on the beach there on highway one California. It’s probably a couple like an hour, hour and a half southwest of Santa Cruz. But we got a massive storm coming on the west coast of the US has been dumping rain. So I’m going to cross my fingers and hope for the best.
Bradley: Oh man. Good timing, huh?
Adam: Yeah, we might be doing. I don’t know a turkey on Coleman stove.
Chris: What? camping outside?
Adam: Well, we got a little cabin, but it’s just kind of more of a structure than a like full-on cabin. So we’ll see how it goes. I may have a story for you guys next week. If I make it back live. So Hernan, how about you, man? What’s, uh, what are you doing for a living in Buenos Aires?
Hernan: We don’t do that. I’m happy to see you guys eating turkey and all that stuff. So I’m excited. I’m really excited to be here. And I have my friend humpy wood here. What’s he saying? You’re a kinky MF. Oh, yeah. If you go to semanticmastery.com/blackfriday there’s going to be some good stuff coming up daily deals. Don’t miss it including that stuff that Bradley did he always over-delivers like a crazy person. And you know it’s really really good stuff so go to semanticmastery.com/blackfriday to get your stuff and invest in your business and instead of like getting a new TV that you don’t even need.
Adam: definitely and I was gonna say you Hernan we’ve had I’m looking right now I just hopped in to look at the stats event 262 people go so far you can go to semanticmastery.com/blackfriday right now.
Bye bye

You’re watching this live put a question on the page. I think everyone’s already headed out for the travel plans. We got a few questions. But we’re going to go through those and then we all are heading out to do our things too. So you got a question? By all means, get it on the page. So we can help you out today. Before we head out and do our Thanksgiving stuff. So real quick, though, let’s take a minute and say hello to everybody. We got everyone here. So Bradley, what I guess one How are you doing into what are you doing for Thanksgiving?
Bradley: First, I’m doing very well. Second, let me mention real quick. Yes, what Adam just said is true, guys. We’re happy to cut out early today on Hump Day Hangouts.
Now, what’s the problem? I mean, how did they get a penalty? How do you know that it was kind of like, was it a manual?
Bye bye

Adam: should be going live right? Welcome, everybody to the day before Thanksgiving 2019. It’s Episode 264 of Hump Day Hangouts. We are all here. And I will put in a quick suggestion.
Bye bye

Adam: should be going live right? Welcome, everybody to the day before Thanksgiving 2019. It’s Episode 264 of Hump Day Hangouts. We are all here. And I will put in a quick suggestion.
But we are here as always, so you know if you've got questions, post them otherwise, soon as we run out of questions, we're out. So, but I'm doing quite well. You know, by the way, if anybody missed out on the Google Ads branding course, wow. It's turned out really good. And now it's been edited the three-hour-long webinars now been edited into like 15 lessons for that's just session one. We're going to do the next session on December 9th. So I don't think you can get the early bird special anymore, but we might have something on Friday, maybe. We'll see what happens on Friday right. Lastly, as far as for Thanksgiving I got my daughter for five days actually just got back from picking her up. She's downstairs so she didn't have to listen to me talk about marketing for the next hour. But it's good because I've got our for five days and we've got two different Thanksgiving dinners planned one tomorrow, one on Saturday. And just looking forward to taking a few days off and spending it with my daughter. How about you? What are you doing?
Adam: I'm headed out to pick the unfortunate time to head to the beach. We're going to Big Sur if anyone's familiar with that. It's a lot of forests. A lot of really scenic areas right on the beach there on highway one California. It's probably a couple like an hour, hour and a half southwest of Santa Cruz. But we got a massive storm coming on the west coast of the US has been dumping rain. So I'm going to cross my fingers and hope for the best.
Bradley: Oh man. Good timing, huh?
Adam: Yeah, we might be doing. I don't know a turkey on Coleman stove.
Chris: What? camping outside?
Adam: Well, we got a little cabin, but it's just kind of more of a structure than a like full-on cabin. So we'll see how it goes. I may have a story for you guys next week. If I make it back live. So Hernan, how about you, man? What's, uh, what are you doing for a living in Buenos Aires?
Hernan: We don't do that. I'm happy to see you guys eating turkey and all that stuff. So I'm excited. I'm really excited to be here. And I have my friend humpy wood here. What's he saying? You're a kinky MF. Oh, yeah. If you go to semanticmastery.com/blackfriday there's going to be some good stuff coming up daily deals. Don't miss it including that stuff that Bradley did he always over-delivers like a crazy person. And you know it's really really good stuff so go to semanticmastery.com/blackfriday to get your stuff and invest in your business and instead of like getting a new TV that you don't even need.
Adam: definitely and I was gonna say you Hernan we've had I'm looking right now I just hopped in to look at the stats event 262 people go so far you can go to semanticmastery.com/blackfriday right now. And we've got three free training videos that haven't been seen one of them is brand spanking new that nobody has ever seen. So we've got that up, but that's coming down at midnight tomorrow. So if you haven't gone over there, by all means, head over there. If you're watching this after the fact after Friday, that's too late. That's all right. You got two days to get over there and check it out. Let's see
Bradley: Chris, what the hell are you doing over there, man?
Adam: Yeah. Chris How you doing and how's your microphone
Chris: I wanted some attention you know like you taking too long guys. So yeah, like I'm pretty good here. happy that I don't have to eat boatloads of foods. I enjoyed Thanksgiving last year while I was on a cut and it pretty much destroyed me. Let's call it that way through me back two weeks so I'm happy that I can pass on that experience this year. And yeah, enjoy the cold weather in Austria like I'm super excited because it's snowing.
Adam: Wow. Ooh, nice. Hopefully, don't get any sound here. I'm trying to bring up something all right. Marco. I guess yeah, let's get the Costa Rica weather update and what are you going to be up to for the next few days?
Marco: No Thanksgiving in Costa Rica. We don't celebrate it. But I mean to all of you who celebrated hope you have a great time. I hope your table is full and that you have lots of blessings on the table. Not just for Thanksgiving, but for the rest of the year. So yeah, by all means, enjoy it now. I'm working on my charity webinars. Every year, which I do something for charity. And last year went over really well. I did four webinars. And we just had a ton of people attend. And, you know, I'm known when it's about the kids. I'm known to give away a lot of knowledge that maybe shouldn't go out, but I don't care. It's for the kids. And if you donate, you can come to the webinars, I'll drop the donation link on the page. And anyone who wants to donate, go there and make a donation or go find me to one of the Semantic Mastery of the free group. Go to my page, right Marco Benavides. I'm on Facebook and all of the instructions are there on what you need to do to it. Turn the live webinar. Things are a good man. So when things are good, it's good to give
Adam: most definitely most definitely yeah and be doing a little bit of that it's good to just a general I do try to do some reflection around this time of year and think about you know, hey I'm joking about going out and being cold in the rain but it's my choice to do it. I'm glad you know for the things I've got and for having not only you guys as partners, but also you know, being able to converse with people help other people out on Hump Day Hangout, so we'll talk about this more at Christmas we got some good stuff coming up too. But we'll concentrate on this week we got some cool Black Friday stuff coming up so like said in her non did go to semanticmastery.com/blackfriday, and then that will automatically roll over training goes away midnight tomorrow, but then we're going to have some just killer deals coming up at 12:01 am starting Friday. I'm pumped. I'm getting excited.
So we're real quick. I want to say though if you're new to semantic mastery, you're in the right place. We're going to get to some questions here shortly. You can come here every week, just go to semanticmastery.com/hdquestions, and you can ask your questions ahead of time, which we highly encourage just keep it to one question. I know it's tough sometimes but people start writing paragraphs and we have to skip if there are too many questions because we want to make sure we're fair and get to all the questions. But then the next step would be grabbing the battle plan if you want step by step processes for getting results, things like your age domain or you got a new website you're putting up or a YouTube channel or whatever it is you want to do go to battleplan.semanticmastery.com pick it up, it's a steal, we put in a ton of awesome bonuses is a value bomb. And after that, if you've got clients and you're wanting to grow your digital marketing agency or business, then come join us in the mastermind go to mastermind.semanticmastery.com and for everyone that likes saving time, that's me, right and if you want to not only save time to get things done very very well the first time go to mgyb.co originally this stuff started out as are done for you services and things like syndication networks are always drives tech stuff we had we had certainly taught about and you could still buy the courses if you want to understand the real nuts and bolts and maybe have someone do it for you. But if you want it done quickly, and you want it done professionally had the mgyb.co, you can check it out. And we've added on link building, press releases, all sorts of awesome stuff, which there might be some Black Friday stuff going on. But we'll hold off on that until Friday. So other than that, guys, do we have anything else that we want to cover?
Bradley: I don't think so. I'm ready to answer some questions. Get the hell out.
Adam: All right. humpy says yes.
Hernan: Humpy's cursing since today's gonna mute myself and that Bradley dude thing.
Bradley: All right, let's do it.
No, not if you're just doing a straight redirect, you can't do that it will pass the penalty. So, or is it better to just delete www without redirecting it and installing the site on the root? Yeah, you can I mean, you could do that because essentially, well, I think about that. Marco, what say you because I know with www a lot of the times will be. It's still treated as a subdomain but just installing it on the root because some people will have maybe linked to you whatever's causing a penalty, let's see, I've got to admit or not there is whatever is causing the penalty could also cause it. Remember, people, if they linked to the root domain version of it, if you had your domain setup on www and they were canonicalized to each other, or they auto redirected from your root domain to the www dot version or whatever, then it if people built links to it without www in the domain, then it's still going to be pointing links back to the root domain, even if you remove that, you know, reinstall the site on the root domain, if that makes sense. So I know if you just did a redirect from the www subdomain to the root domain and then kind of pushed the installation of the site onto the root and lost the www it would still pass the penalty. So what's the best way to go about that Marco?
Marco: Yeah, you know, I was thinking about this question really hard and think Okay, so how, how would I do this because I've just lost my dub dub. And if I did any, as you said, any link building to it, because you still going to have, it depends on the penalty, right? But you're still going to have a ton of links coming to the dub dub dub, especially the way we teach it. Because we use all variations of the URL right? When we link building, so you're going to lose that you're going to lose anyone who's still and there are people who still type out www. and then the address, right, there are still people who do that. Now, you are going to pass a penalty be 301? Yes, no question. Now, what if? What if, right, so I'm just thinking like, this is theory, guys? I don't I hardly ever do this unless I tested but this is theory. And this is something you could try. What have you said that that subdomain to no index nofollow and then have Google crawl it? I'd go into Search Console, have Google recrawl and see what it said to no index, no five And then three or one it to the non dub dub dub version or even HTTPS version right to the non www and then everything is redirected again to the HTTPS, you might lose the penalty with with with a couple of jumps and with that with a no-index nofollow on the subdomain that's causing the problem.
Now, what's the problem? I mean, how did they get a penalty? How do you know that it was kind of like, was it a manual? Because a manual, if you remove whatever it is that offending Google, you can request for reconsideration. So it all depends on what kind of penalty. Like why not it's even hard to get a link penalty. Right? Because Google just doesn't pay attention to links that aren't relevant. Or if you're really talented, then you send millions of links, then you get and you do get an unnatural link, you could get that. But it's usually manuals that you get. So trying to think it through, you may, you may not pass a penalty if you do a double hop, or it might, it might take time for it to catch back up. So you're going to have to test on this and see, but by all means, move it to the non-www. And remember that any links going to that you lose that once you remove that www, if it doesn't get redirected, so you're going to have to read redo all of those links, especially if you had some really powerful links coming through there. That's what I would recommend trying again, theory. I haven't done this. I haven't ever tried it. But in theory, if Google sees that it's knowing that's nofollow, then there's no reason for that website to be penalized anymore.
Hernan: Yeah, right. Can you real quick? This is more like a question. Can you read direct? I guess you could, like you could read direct a subdomain outside of the route and then back into the route, you could like, yeah, you know, like, so as to clean it up.
Bradley: I was gonna, I was going to suggest, you know, something that would be a little bit more elaborate because I've done something similar in the past, where not specifically what I've done it to an external domain and then redirected the external domain back to the domain that had the penalty, but just on a different subdomain or you know, a different subdomain entirely. But here's what I was thinking might also work. It's a mirror of the site anyways. Or you can even iframe those pages into the G site pages if that makes sense. So that you're pointing any negative link equity that's come through that. That might be why you've got a penalty to the G site, which we already know, the G site will clean that up and won't penalize itself. So you'd actually be passing page rank to your money site pages on the new domain, whether its root, the root domain or whatever, different subdomain, whatever, but it would be filtering through the G site. I don't know. I've never actually said I've done that with an external domain before but not with a G site. What do you think Marco about that?
Marco: You know, I'm really liking that, especially if you can map out your custom domain, right? The www version over to Google so that stays but you still have the G site underneath, right? Right. And that that'll filter out any other. Yes, this is guaranteed that'll filter out any penalty that could have. Which, but if we'd have to see what the penalties you guys, you don't tell us what the penalty is that we can't really give you the advice, or the answer that you need. But yeah, I mean, again, in theory, you get three on one that penalize subdomain that www, which is a subdomain, to a G site, which links over to the root where the new site was built, and it can all be the same content and Google won't give a shit.
Bradley: That's it, right? I mean, that's, that's what I would do. Because again, you're putting an SEO shield between the penalty in your domain, right? I mean, that's what we're talking that's what we talked about the SEO shield. Go check it out on MGYB and you'll if you don't already know what we're talking about, and now you're basically doing that you're inserting part of that shield in between the penalty and the domain. So check it out and try.
What Is The Best Way To Add A YouTube Video To A Website And Maintain Site Speed?
Greg's Up next, he says, Is there a preferred way to add a video from our YouTube channel to our website page and maintain site speed my site pages load in around one second. And I don't want that to slow to two or three seconds as a result of adding videos. My goals are to increase time on my site, have specific videos, keep visitors on specific pages, increase views on the videos and improved website ranking by adding videos but not slow down page load times. Any suggestions? Yeah, they have lazy load plugins. You can also I know there's some way to code that into but I know there's if it's a WordPress site, they have lazy load plugins that will lazy load images. And they also I'm pretty sure will lazy load iframes or whatever. So videos I'm pretty sure that you can also lazy load those which means it will allow the page to render entirely before it will start to load the images or the external iframe such as a YouTube video. Any other subject The only other I mean obviously if you use a CDN, but a CDN, I'm not sure I don't think a CDN affects the loading speed of iframes. Because those are external sites, right? It's just a tunnel to an external site. But CDN a content delivery network would still allow your page itself to load incredibly quick. The iframe would still be would load as slowly as you don't have control over that the speed at which the iframe loads, that makes sense. Mark, do you have any suggestions for that
Marco: lazy load suggestions is perfect. I would say don't be too anal about paint speed, because it's one of over 200 factors. And we don't know how much of a factor it is. Everything else considered. And since we teach PageSpeed, doesn't really matter. Nothing, nothing matters. This is the three pillars, that it's foundational principles, what we teach activity, relevance, trust and authority and how we build that up. So if you go from one second to 2.2 seconds or whatever, doesn't matter, it's not going to matter to anybody, especially Someone coming and they see the video, you have it in a prominent place where the person can watch the video, they're going to wait for that video because they want to watch the video. You've driven them to your pace. Now if it's taking a ton of time to render, that that might cause a big deal, but you can just do it lazy load and and have it render after the page loads and and you're good to go.
Hernan: Yeah, There's never like there's there's not a good reason why you shouldn't be using a CDN anyways. CloudFlare being free, you know, or something like that. So you should be using it anyways. So,
Bradley: yeah, yeah, I mean, it'll help to load the page quicker and also will load the page from multiple servers or, you know, from multiple locations. So, and also helps in case something happens where your site goes down. For whatever reason, people can still view the pages that kind of because they're cached. So there's a lot of good reasons to have a CDN. It's good for security. There's a lot of reasons for that. But it will help the page itself to load quicker. Again, it's not going to help the iframes to load any faster because those are external sites. It's just a tunnel to an external site within your web page, right? So you don't have any control over that. But you can control at which point does that load so that you can tell that like, again, with a lazy load plugin, you're basically telling the page to render before it will start to load any external iframes essentially embeds so okay. Try it and see.
Oh, let's see. Tom says Happy Thanksgiving. Thanks, Tom. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well. Fitz. What's up Fitz? He says on Marcus charity. Is he going to give a 30 minute call if they donate a certain amount to his charity this year?
Marco: No, this year I've decided to match donations dollar for dollar.
Bradley: Very cool. Okay. So there you go. Fitz. Adams got the black friday special there and we're almost out of questions guys, which were only 20
Hernan: Sorry, sorry, Bradley. But I think Adam I'm not sure if he's here because he needed to start driving but I think that we have a deal in the Black Friday deal that we're doing that if you spent x you get you get some consultant time would meet with us like now with me but without
Adam: Hernan's going to come to your house and have Thanksgiving dinner.
Hernan: Okay, give Yeah, I'm gonna cook the turkey.
Adam: But um, but yeah, I wonder like a deal that we've got both for Semantic Mastery and mg y b, depending on you know, if you're spending your money in both places, that's great. And we can certainly work something out but we've got I don't want to give it away but I will Go to semanticmastery.com/blackfriday on Friday or over the weekend. And yeah, you'll be able to see what you can do there.
And you'd like to get like, I know. You know what I'm saying?
Bradley: Yeah. You're all over and kiss your wife and then roll over the other way and kiss me. Well, it says pumpkin or become pie for Thanksgiving which will benefit my SEO the most well, I don't know which will benefit the SEO but both pumpkin and pecan pie for God's sakes, it's Thanksgiving.
Hernan: So right when choose.
Bradley: That's right. Lastly, Greg says it looks like we're going to run out of questions. Which means we're all going to get the hell out of here and go enjoy it with their families. Greg says thanks, guys will check out the lazy low plugin I do I do own and use SEO ultimate plugin from Jeffrey Smith. Good choice, Greg, by the way that's coming very, very soon. The Pro version is coming out if you're in the mastermind, you get access to that a hell of a lot sooner I can tell you that. But I'm really looking forward to that being launched guys. And if you are a member, I think of the ultimate plus version that you get grandfathered in at least a some licenses. I'm not sure how that works. But it's a good choice. Neither either way, Greg, and it's going to get better. I promise you that. There might even be a way to make them work together. Well, yeah, possibly. And that looks like it guys. So unless you got something else you want to talk about. Let's wrap it up.
Marco: You know, if they have conflicting plugins, which we did, then all you have to do is let us know with the new version coming out, and we turn it over to the developer and the developer will take care of I mean, this is going to be fully supported that's that's why it's a paid version of the plugin there is a programmer that's behind this a developer with it. There's a whole team behind the pro version of the plugin Plus we're in the middle of all this too and we always take care of the people who use our products and services.
Bradley: Yeah Thanksgiving. Go Yeah, very happy Thanksgiving.
Hernan: Happy Thanksgiving everybody. I'm really I just want to say I'm really thankful for you guys for coming in asking questions. And you know, joining the group, the free the paid, really thankful for all of the support throughout this year. I'm really thankful for my partners here.
If nothing else, you can always send them out a good faith or goodwill email saying, Hey, here's all the cool deals in the industry that I found, you know, help them out. If you've got things you could do, or you have for sale, maybe it's a product I service that you could offer a discount on, you know, send it, it's not just about Oh, you're just raking in the money. But you know, people are expecting it. I'm looking, you know, we create offers, but I'm also looking for deals over the Black Friday weekend. So, you know, don't don't think just because you don't own like a physical goods store or something that you can't get in on this. There's a lot of cool stuff you can do. And create some goodwill, you know, amongst your network. So do it. Very cool.
Bradley: Very cool. All right. Let's wrap it up then guys. We will see you all next week. Happy Thanksgiving once again.
Bye, guys. Yeah, run. Bye everyone. Bye bye

Bye bye
