so hordak was so brainwashed and misinformed about how important he was to prime that he did all that on etheria, not to return to him as a regular clone, but to get a major promotion? maybe he was holding out the irrational hope that he'd get to "keep" (stay on) etheria and rule it in prime's name... while also receiving prime's unconditional love.

i mean hordak wanted prime to see that he was wrong about him and that hordak was worthy. he had enough self determination that he forgot the number one rule: prime is never wrong. he didn't discard himself when he landed in etheria, believing himself to be worthless in prime's eyes: he thought he could prove himself. he gave himself a name. i doubt he thought prime would take any of that from him. prime, his all loving and all powerful big brother.

so i guess as soon as hordak did get taken back to prime, as soon as he remembered the identity that was taken from him, he knew there was no love under prime's rule, at least not the kind he wanted for himself.

after that, he just needed to find the courage to choose love over the fear that kept him in line. your god telling you to shoot your loved one in the face is a great motivator for that!
