#CONTEXT: we were talking about the james somerton bullshit #anytime someone at a party asks me what i majored in i say 'marketing and finance but i hated it the entire time i promise im normal'#can confirm though that 80% of business majors suck ass at writing let alone coming up with original ideas #in first year we had a mandatory business writing class because it had gotten so bad among previous cohorts #and everyone i talked to hated it because we had to read actual books and the professors were lit. phds with actual standards #'they mark way too hard i got 60% on everything' have you considered that this is a. skill issue.#also 60% is just. expected for certain humanities courses lolll at least in business our grades get curved #so you're only hurting your GPA if you write worse than everyone else lol. but good luck with that #anyways that's just a fraction of why my classes were terrible. but the writing thing annoyed me the most when I was doing group essays.#beepbeep.txt

Why is my granddad messaging me and shading my uncle

#my uncle’s business was featured on a youtube channel because he and various other people at the business collaborated with a local artist #on a very (physically) big project #(i’m being deliberately vague to avoid doxxing my uncle)#and tell me why my granddad was like ‘he’s doing so well. i didn’t know he had it in him’#sir THIS IS YOUR SON #you invested in his business!! did you do that thinking it would fail #i’m ngl it sounded like kind of a bizarre idea when he pitched it to us all; but it also sounded like an untapped market & something that #could be a goldmine in the right hands. and it does seem to be in the right hands #i was just like ‘yeah i didn’t expect this either but it looks great’ and left it at that #i am once again asking when me and my uncle traded places as ‘the successful one’ & ‘the black sheep of the family’#i would never suggest that there’s a correlation. but also since my uncle started his business; i have been mugged twice #my mentor who i trusted tried to ruin my career and did succeed in making a lot of people lose respect for me; i had to leave the only job #that accepted me because they tried to make me work thrice as many hours as i was being paid for and gave me zero support #i was unemployed for months and losing my mind and finally had to become a barista and just as i was starting to enjoy that; i dislocated #my knee & sprained two joints in the process #oh and it wasn’t the first time!! i’ve actually dislocated that knee four times. all during the time my uncle had his business #let’s not even talk about how i got covid 3 times or all the shit that happened to me in 2021 because i really will scream #2021 literally had it in for me in every single way #i literally think my uncle was being dunked on by the universe but he found a way to dodge the curse and he has no descendants #so it just passed to me. i need to hand this curse over to a child #maybe i should just start a business. doing what though 🧐#personal

The way the question is phrased is supposed to redirect attention away from the real issue at hand.

First of all, yes, compensation need not always be monetary, it can also be status or power or experience. (However, this usually won’t work ad infinitum.) This much is obvious. Yet money is the unit of caring. And do these streamer businesses care about their chats being moderated? Do they care about this moderation being provided in a sufficient quality and quantity? Why do they care? Is it because large parts of their businesses (advertisers, sponsors, engagement) implicitly or explicitly require them to provide content moderation in their chats? Are their businesses, as such, dependent on the quality and quantity of services rendered?

Then there will come a time from which they will pay for that. The question is never if. It’s when. As a business owner, you can take on a certain amount of risk, and up to a certain point, you usually have to to even get started. But soon enough all these streamer businesses will pay, because hunger for risk always decreases with size. Some will take longer to reach this conclusion or not be able to reach it on their own at all, maybe because they lack the required business acumen or because they fail before they get to it. And yes, there will be gnawing and gnashing of teeth once they realize (or stomping of feet, as demonstrated by some of the man-children in the video). But nobody will get past that point without paying up in some shape or form.

Because the question was never really “should you pay?” It always was “can you afford not to?”

#now to be fair traditional business don't fare any better once questions like these come up #cf. all the times business complain about not getting enough applications #'ok‚ but have you considered paying a market clearing price?' - 'no why?'#but it's such a wild ride reiterating *everything* once more because some miniscule detail changes #business owners have this talent to basically try to qualified immunity their way into not paying for stuff #'do I need to pay for having my office cleaned?' - 'yeah‚ people won't do it for free.'#'ok but will they service my computers for free?' - 'no‚ servicing computers also costs money.'#'but surely having somebody content moderate the online space my business runs on 24/7 cannot cost any money???' - '...'#'counterquestion: would you provide your services for free?' - 'nO?!? what kind of stupid question is that??? I need to make money!!!'#now of course the moderator's side isn't completely blameless either in this #if you provide your services for free for a long time and let yourself be abused for the promise of power or friendship or something like th #at ... that's on you as much as it is on the other person #and turning the ship around can be hard work. but it's not something that hasn't happened thousands of times throughout history #and it *will* happen here #so there's that #most big youtubers with >50 people on payroll also didn't pay their interns at first #but there always. always. always. comes a time when the free tier isn't good enough anymore #politics #economics #mine

Told my store manager and my manager that I usually directly report to that I’ve been accepted to do my Bachelor’s degree (mostly so I could just discuss needing a reasonable amount of notice if I need to do a closing shift and that kind of thing as much as possible). They were both really happy for me and encouraging, and my store manager was even saying they’d look into occasionally offering me time- during my paid work hours- to study (even just half an hour here or there), which I was totally not expecting, but if they’re able to make that happen for me I would be eternally grateful.

#he did ask why i didn't apply for the scholarship the company offers #and it's because there's a bunch of stipulations about proving what you're studying is going to help with your work #and you have to stay with the company for a certain amount of time after completion of your degree otherwise you have to pay them back #and while i could probably waffle my way through some bs about how a business degree links well to retail management (even a marketing major #i don't want to be locked into the company 3-4 years from now just on the off chance i get a good job offer right after completing my degree #personal

this is a such first-class whine from a lower-middle-class citizen, but hear me out. the covid era has been dogshit (precursor, not the point lol). it killed, (further) divided and frightened us. the final kick in the nuts is that we really don’t benefit from any of the Panaceas for Shit Life anymore. the puppet masters have tightened the purse strings and made everything unaffordable. and what IS left that is affordable is just...crap. shite, even. have y’all noticed how mediocre stuff like cheap junk food/takeout is now? most forms of media? the stuff meant to distract and soothe us average jobhavers from going bonkers in the hamster wheel.

6+ years ago, we all at least all knew a few cheap, bomb and reliable places to eat out once in a while. a treat. you could eat takeout on a friday night while picking a reasonably well produced and thought-provoking movie from the one major, well organized streaming service (that cut your tv bill to $7/month, wahoo!). you might even partake in some say, drugs/alcohol to get a little silly with it. maybe you were more of a dine-out person, and made a night of it with friends. you had a good time and didn’t have to forgo groceries that week to make up for it.

now, the food and tv is boldly served, expensive ass. you can’t afford drugs, a book is $50. hobbies take up precious time and energy. ANY service you need is slow and unresponsive. people are tired. like, this is not the depression talking! things are worse, more expensive sure, but why couldn’t they have at least remained the same QUALITEA? why skimp on materials and production?

and then it occurred to me. is it our fault? are the price skyrockets and decrease in the quality of goods separate issues, in fact? one a consequence of opportunistic greed, and the other simply that market forces have determined that we are willing to pay those increased prices for less? the corporation is always experimenting to see what it can get away with. cheaper materials, less concern for our safety, well being, entertainment and enrichment. if we buy them at a certain prices in certain numbers that fit their optimized projections, they sell it. simple as that. are we just accepting the capitalism we think we deserve? or did they just financially ream us so badly that we had no choice to settle for worse product?
