The Erickson family is coming along great, as for today, we finished just about the rest of the amazing beats and learned how to record audio into a daw.

We’re thrilled to announce our newest title, A Fire at the Center: Solidarity, Whiteness, and Becoming a Water Protector by Karen Van Fossan. It's available at shopinspirit.org and wherever books are sold.
This is a story of becoming and un-becoming. When the living waters that crisscrossed the Standing Rock reservation came under threat, minister of the nearby Unitarian Universalist congregation Karen Van Fossan asked herself what it means, as a descendent of colonialism, to resist her own colonial culture. When another pipeline, Line 3, came to threaten Anishinaabe ways of life, the question became even more resounding.
In A Fire at the Center, Van Fossan takes readers behind the scenes of the Dakota Access Pipeline conflict, to penitentiaries where prisoners of war have carried the movement onward, to the jail cell where she was held for protesting Line 3, to a reimagining of decolonized family constellations, and to moments of collective hope and strength.
With penetrating insight, she blends memoir, history, and cultural critique. Guided by the generous teachings of Oceti Sakowin Camp near Standing Rock, she investigates layers of colonialism—extractive industries, mass incarceration, broken treaties, disappearances of Indigenous people—and the boundaries of imperial whiteness.
For all those striving for liberation and meaningful allyship, Van Fossan’s learnings and practices of genuine, mutual solidarity and her thoughtful critique of whiteness will be transformational.
Karen Van Fossan is an abolitionist, ordained minister, licensed professional counselor, and former defendant in the Line 3 pipeline resistance. As director of Authentic Ministry, she serves as a street chaplain committed to relational spirituality and restorative justice. She has studied at Naropa University, United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, and Pacific School of Religion. Matriarch to a rambunctious chosen family, she lives in Fargo, North Dakota, on the traditional lands of Anishinaabe, Lakota/Dakota, and many Indigenous peoples.

I’m lucky. I grew up at a time when I could drink straight from the garden hose when I was thirsty on a hot day. I didn’t have to spend money on water in a plastic bottle that will end up in a landfill until it breaks down years, even decades from now into microplastics that will infiltrate every corner of the planet for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. I also didn’t have to worry about my water being contaminated with heavy metals or chemicals that would poison me. I’m lucky because I grew up after December 16, 1974 when then President Gerald Ford signed the Safe Drinking Water Act.
Unfortunately, we, as a nation, have not realized the promise of the #SafeDrinkingWater Act. Tens of millions of us live in regions where the level contaminants exceed those allowed by the law. Although millions in this country live without running water even those who have the luxury of getting water from a tap are not safe as the poisoning of the people of Flint, MI and countless boil water warnings annually show. The emergency warning system in the event of or even just the likelihood of the contamination of underground water sources (aquifers & springs) and surface waters (rivers & lakes) is ineffective or worse as the corporate efforts to put an pipeline over an aquifer and river system supplying water to tens of millions of Americans demonstrates.
I was lucky. So I’ve pulled together some #blue #yarn and #knit #hats to call attention, in my own way, to this important anniversary and to the honor the efforts of #waterprotectors and hard-working employees of the EPA and other agencies, NGOs and even companies who are still striving to deliver on the promise of the Safe Drinking Water Act so that future generations will be as lucky as I was growing up.

#Waterprotectors are activists, organizers, and cultural workers focused on the defense of the world's water and water systems. The water protector name, analysis and style of activism arose from Indigenous communities in North America during the #DakotaAccessPipeline protests at the #StandingRockReservation, which began with an encampment on LaDonna Brave Bull Allard's land in April, 2016.[1

The Podcasting Learning Curve
Communication is imperative. Now is the time for all of us to grasp that we have it in our hands to restore our soil, protect our water, cool the climate and love each other.#climate #soil #waterprotector #authors #podcasting
I really do want to do a live streaming podcast from Listen & Be Heard, and one day in the not-to-distant future, I will. But, I’ve decided to start with pre-recording them and work my way up to that. So, the first one is almost in the can and will be available very, very soon. I’m an improviser. Everyone has told me to write it down, plan it out, but I just wanna get started and learn as I go.…

for any of my american followers, please learn more about line 3 and the water protectors. line 3 is illegal and violates the treaty rights of the Anishinaabe people in Minnesota. this is bigger than you might think. it will directly effect climate change, it’s guaranteed that there will be oil spills if it’s completed, and it will not lower gas prices for us since the pipes will carry tar sands which isn’t used in gasoline for cars at all. enbridge is a Canadian company and america will not profit off of this.
if you want to learn more, @ugrunna, @quiiroi/@quiibunnie, and @giiwedinindizhinikaaz on tiktok have excellent information and resources. that’s how i’ve been staying up to date and, unfortunately, i don’t know of any great resources on tumblr.
if you can donate, i donated to Stopline3 on venmo. the money is used for bail funds for indigenous people arrested while protesting peacefully and it also goes to the water protectors’ supplies.
the website link below also gives more information about line 3 and has a petition you can sign to tell president biden to stop line 3. if you’d like to help and you’re an american, you can also text “SIGN PBGBUD” to 50409 to tell your representatives to stop line 3.

Today please donate to or offer some kind of support to the indigenous people whose land we occupy. @thatbitchkellyhayes posted all these excellent opportunities to support indigenous resistance on Twitter. I didn’t include the #StopLine3 fundraiser because unfortunately it has ended, but please find a way to tangibly support the fight for justice and survival on Turtle Island. If anyone deserves a Noble prize👆🏻 ・・・ “🌿This is fifteen-year-old Autumn Peltier. You may know her already. She is the Chief Water Commissioner of the Anishinabek Nation in Ontario. Peltier assumed her role as a clean water advocate at age eight, and by thirteen addressed the UN General Assembly. 🌿Peltier sees herself as "protector" rather than a "protestor." This distinction is an important one. Some might assume protestors are out to make trouble. But protectors are determined to prevent others from creating more severe and long-lasting problems. It seems we can all get on board with that. 🌿As we learned from the Standing Rock protests, the first peoples of this land offered a powerful model for collective resistance. But they did more than that. Their way of life models a way forward. If we slow down to listen, the first nations of this continent can show us how to live in harmony with the earth again. 🌿” - @julie.flynn.badal ❤️❤️❤️ #waterprotectors #autumnpeltier #supportwaterprotectors #istandwithwaterprotectors #landback #indigenousresistance #indigenousland #returnstolenland #nopipelines #anishinabek #chiefwatercommissioner #uncharter #undrip (at One Off Oddities) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEVcRjjJhVT/?igshid=1ezkvg4gywprg
