h2o was won several awards and been nominated for quite a few. let’s take a stroll down memory lane and discuss the fashion of the time!

ok disclaimer. these are just my opinions!! you can have different ones. it’s cool.

🐬 2007 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards

It’s hip it’s fresh it’s not too serious. I like all the makeup but especially Claire’s, it’s really working with the hairstyle. the patterns are horrendous but I appreciate the color now compared to what we see down the line.

Overall it’s a 5/10

🐬 2008 AFI Awards

a very iconic award show! i love phoebe’s dress + matching jewelry. the necklace and bracelet look like pearls, so it’s on brand for the show she’s nominated for. i don’t like cariba’s dress. the cut is awkward as well as the belt, and i don’t love the shade of purple. brittney’s is ok but the handbag not matching is killing me. angus’ is… well it’s a suit! he looks good and also like every other man at an awards show. Indiana is serving that ceasar flickerman hair flawlessly.

6.8/10 the uncoordination and cariba’s dress lower this score for me

oh dear god. what is going on here?? I’ve been trying to figure it out for years. Did they not have stylists at this point? I don’t understand the gray at alllll. The weird ruffles/rouching, if you can even call it that, repulses me. hate the medieval times ass belt. The outfits are so ugly they make the hairstyles look good. And I’ve never liked the makeup either, I just feel like it doesn’t suit them at all. ALSO THE SHOES?? WHAT. I’ve just noticed phoebes chunky bracelets too..

1/10 because I struggle to find anything good to say about these looks

Cariba’s outfit reminds me of that twink dog from barbie in a fashion fairytale. Anyways it really missed the mark. The weird shoulders and denim shorts are not it. I feel like the bow could be cute with a dress? Idk but none of her looks hit.

Angus is casual, I feel like this outfit would do numbers on early 10s tumblr.

Having both pirated it and snuck into the theater, avatar 2 is simply a bad movie. For all of the technical reasons (the script was hilariously bad, they reused the same score from the first movie, most of the plot points were borrowed from the first movies as well, subjectively its like a bad fn net fic written by a twelve year old), but mostly because literally it made me sick to my stomach as an indigenous person.

There were multiple points where both times viewing I nearly left the room. On four (4) separate occasions in this movie, indigenous coded women are made to scream-sob in front of the camera. In Canada, indigenous women experience disproportionate rates of physical and sexual violence. This is mirrored in the US and in Aotearoa. James Cameron took the real life violence and grief our communities experience, and exploited it on screen for profit. The whole franchise is obviously exploitative of indigenous spiritualities, aesthetics, and experiences under colonialism, and it only got more obvious in this installment. Any anticolonial message is surface level at best, and don’t start typing out that stupid “well watching how awful this fictional colonization is made people feel bad for real indigenous people” argument. Because 1) I’ve never met a single goddamn person online or offline that that was true for and 2) James Cameron isn’t an ally for making exploitive appropriative trauma porn.

I had been considering writing a full review of this movie, which is why I snuck in for an actual viewing. Thinking about this film, and the reactions to it online from settlers, makes me so upset that I don’t think I will. I’m sure there’s more in-depth writing out there on just how horribly racist this film is. So. Just. Please don’t give James Cameron money for this shit. Read and watch shit actually made by indigenous people. Thanks.

Starting a collection. Today's treasure from the village of [redacted], population 400 and change, joins the hand-carved runestones and copy of Maus that an extremely cranky Scottish guy ran home to bring to me. It is a Linux distro on a stick, given me by a totally other guy I ALSO met last year while he was engineering a set of mini wind turbines in some CAD program with the most terminal case of Open Source Disease I've ever seen. He insisted on running the Linux stick on his own computer so I could see it didnt have a bug.

It will eventually go on my shitty old laptop and then get mailed back to the library for him, but it currently resides in the place of honour which is the plant pot I put the runestones in.

Same village, one year apart. Cannot WAIT to see next year's Patron Energy-infused treasure.

Not to be undemocratic but we need to just stop doing extensive public consultations for public projects in Ireland because I'm really tired of NIMBYism gutting important projects. Sorry I don't care that Margaret from Terenure doesn't want a bus lane or a cycle lane going by her house, she can fucking deal with it.

It feels like getting any good infrastructure work done here is always an uphill battle with retired homeowners who have nothing better to do than bitch about everything. Literally just stop caring what they think. You can't let some hyper-local opposition for stupid reasons kill a project that's going to benefit the city as a whole.
