January 2024 Review Roundup
hello everypony‼️ something i want to do through 2024 is a mini review series where i recap some of the media i watched/played/read at the end of every month. this was inspired by tumblr user ponett’s 2023 media wrap-up, it's a great collection of quick reviews so go check it out!
i’m doing this partially as writing/analysis practice, but mostly because my memory is really bad and i want to keep track of what i've seen this year. with that said, my thoughts on everything i finished in january 2024 is under the cut :]
Portal 1 + 2
yyyup i beat Portal and it only took me (checks watch) 13 years
the first time i played Portal 2 was at a friend’s house when i was in middle school, and i had a fuckin blast. but after all that time... it still holds up! i don’t think anything i have to say about Portal will be particularly new since people have been praising this series since it came out. the writing, the level design, even the controls feel tight and engaging the whole way through. i played on switch and expected a bit of jank, but i was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it felt to play. the only part that dragged for me were the levels through the old aperture labs, but i think i would like them a lot more on a second replay. Portal 2 is fantastic and one of my new favorite games, the artistry behind it is truly incredible and i’m really glad i finally finished it. while i was playing Portal 2, i described Glados and Wheatly to a friend and said “they’re like if a ceiling fan could be passive aggressive and if Fozzie Bear was an evil golf ball”
I Think You Should Leave
finally. i can truly understand and appreciate Subspace Dubbed Over
i think one of my favorite things about I Think You Should Leave is how it utilizes horror. beyond sitting slack-jawed in disbelief at the crazy events unfolding before my eyes, a number of the sketches dipped into bits that genuinely kinda scared me. like the one sketch that circulates on here where the guy (pig?) in a mask crawls through a dog door, which is. genuinely terrifying. but so many of the other sketches have slow, nerve-racking pacing leading to crazy shit that would be perfect in a horror film were the context different. idk i like dissecting how horror and comedy are essentially the same thing and I Think You Should Leave was very good at enabling that <3 favorite sketches are probably “then let my wife eat the damn receipt” and “55 BURGERS 55 HOTDOGS 100 FRIES 100 TATER TOTS”
Sonic Prime Season 3
man. ohhhh man. i didn’t go into this with high expectations and i still feel let down. Sonic Prime Season 3 was definitely my least favorite “season” of the batch - abysmal pacing, very few character moments i actually enjoyed, and the things i praised about the show felt very underutilized through these episodes. Nine is the shining star of Sonic Prime and i was looking forward to seeing his more villainous side, but his character took such a sharp turn into pure evil and it felt like he spent the entire season repeating the same three lines. and as much as i praise Shadow’s writing in Prime, it doesn’t really matter when he spends half of the season trapped in a hole that he just… runs out of later.
lastly, i cannot stop thinking about how bad the pacing of this season is. three episodes for a repetitive final battle feels like such a waste of time when you see just how much they rush the emotional resolutions in the last episode. however, there is one thing i truly love about Sonic Prime Season 3 - i love the Sails and Mangey fakeout death. it's so fucking funny. like you really expect me to believe that two cartoon animals in this Y-7 rated show EXPLODED?????? absolute comedy gold.
overall, i just… don’t really know what to think of Sonic Prime. anything i enjoyed in the show was often fleeting, and much of it felt like its only purpose was to waste my time. also Rouge i can’t believe they did you so dirty oh my god
Ghost Trick
i was so proud that i figured out the secret behind Sissel’s memory loss like halfway through the game. however i also kept getting caught during the prison escape sequence like an idiot
Ghost Trick is in a similar situation as Portal where 1. it’s incredible and one of my new favorite games, and 2. there’s nothing i can really say about it that hasn’t already been said or just. shouldn’t be said. Ghost Trick is a fantastic mystery game, and because of that i think it’s best to go into its story as blind as possible. the narrative unfolds in such fascinating ways - even though the actual object manipulation gameplay isn’t directly about solving the mystery (like in Ace Attorney or other mystery games), it still ties wonderfully into the story in some incredibly unique ways.
i also really love the artstyle of Ghost Trick - i love 2D character artwork with that sharp lineweight, it reminded me a lot of Sonic Battle (another game with an artstyle i love). i was also really impressed by the 3D character models and animation - despite the limitations of the camera, you get a wonderful sense of everyone’s personality from the limited body language expressed in the overworld (even though the models lack much facial expression which. i guess they don’t really need? idk that was the only thing that threw me off). anyways yeah everyone should play Ghost Trick so Ghost Trick fans can be freed from their curse and talk about it without having to tag like 10 different spoiler tags. and for Missile
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
ok bear with me. i went into Scott Pilgrim Takes Off without reading the comics first. and i fuckin loved it
my understanding of Scott Pilgrim before SPTO was mostly from the movie (I KNOW I’M SORRY), but even with my base understanding of the series i really enjoyed this show for what it was. i found myself appreciating the time they dedicated to further develop every single character in the show - especially Ramona. she’s fantastic as the lead, i really loved watching her reconcile with her exes and seeing all of them grow instead of exploding into coins. my favorite episode was probably the one with her and Roxie - not only did i adore the movie-jumping set pieces, but you really understand the weight of Ramona’s mistakes in their past relationship and how much it hurt Roxie. despite the big climactic fight, the flashbacks are quiet, subtle, heartbreaking. Ramona’s apology is genuine, and it feels so wonderful to watch her confront her past throughout the show. also i think it’s really funny that for all these characters to become the best versions of themselves, they had to kill off Scott for most of the story
and holy shit the artstyle and animation. oh my god. i love watching something that makes me immediately go “i need to see the storyboards for this RIGHT NOW.” SPTO is such a visual delight to watch, it elevates the artstyle of the comics while also keeping what makes that style so appealing - i love the line weight on the characters, i love how much forward energy the animation has, i love the fucking. virtual boy section. as soon as i found out Science Saru was also behind Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, everything made immediate sense. i was destined to love this show.
another worry i had going into SPTO (besides the fact that i hadn’t read the comics lol) is that the original cast from the movie was returning. i think the movie cast is fine, but i wasn’t sure how some of them would fare with voice acting for animation. however, i thought they all did a good job - i think the whole cast loves these characters and would be able to fit into them fairly easily no matter what form their performance takes, and they definitely had a good voice director in the studio with them. the only thing that felt off about the voice performances to me was that sometimes it sounded like some of their mics kept peaking?? idk some of these episodes i watched high as balls and i felt like i could hear and see every single sound and frame of the show. so that might have just been me.
god i did not. expect to have this much to say about Scott Pilgrim. i really loved this show and i’m currently reading the comics to fully catch up on the general Scott Pilgrim experience - i think reading the comics AFTER Takes Off is making me appreciate even more of the character work that went into the show. like they do so much with Mathew Patel in SPTO, a character that was. not originally around for a long time from what i’ve gathered? also i like the funny little robot. oh my GOD i cannot talk about this show anymore whatever it’s good get me out of here
Sword AF Season 1
i put on the Smosh cast’s D&D series to play in the background while i was drawing. i did not expect to think much of it. instead, i had one of the most enjoyable D&D podcast experiences since i listened to The Adventure Zone Balance???
i haven’t really enjoyed other D&D podcasts since i dropped off of The Adventure Zone, and i wasn’t expecting much from Sword AF of all things. then i saw that Shayne was playing as a druid warforged made of plants and his name was fucking Fernie and i sat my ass down and LISTENED. while i think Sword AF is currently lacking in its world and larger story, those things just. aren’t really what Sword AF is really trying to provide at the moment. it’s main focus is comedy, and the players are genuinely such a delight to watch play together and build off of each other. they mostly focus on bits and goofs for the sake of she show's comedic tone, but i still found it thoroughly enjoyable because every player embodies and performs their characters really well. idk Sword AF was an unexpected hit for me this month, i thought it was fun. and i love Fernie so much
Plastic Death - Glass Beach
so originally i wasn’t going to include music reviews in these roundups at all, but then i was entirely surprised by a new Glass Beach album and oh my god. holy shit. oh my fucking god jesus christ. holy shit. its preddy good
Plastic Death gets the low point of the album out of the way immediately. it starts with the “phone call/conversation audio” trope that i don’t particularly enjoy - HOWEVER despite me disliking this opening, 1. it sets up the overall themes of Plastic Death very quickly, and 2. the rest of the album blows this 40 second opening completely out of the water. from there, the album grows into something beautiful and uncontained, and i just. i really like it
Plastic Death captures the beauty of the temporary, asks what it means to be created for a cause you can’t fulfill, questions if you can reclaim yourself from cycles and constraints designed to destroy you. and is also about being transgender. the lyrics are abstract in a way that requires a conversation with the listener, many of the vocals obscured and smooth like waves - this album is definitely one that needs to be listened to a few times. i wasn’t sure how i felt about the vocal style at first before realizing the vocals were the main reason i was relistening to this album, allowing myself to find even more that i loved about it. the instrumentation is also incredible, i love the use of marimba in a number of songs - distant, eerie, almost skeletal. and the fucking. 8-bit section?? which kinda rules???? and that’s the only point in the album it ever shows up??????? incredible. a fleeting, somewhat silly moment that i love every time.
this album left my heart aching, in part from my connection to it and in part from the pure love and joy emanating from this music. i can feel just how much fun this music was to perform and create, a cohesion of time and sound that just clicked for me. Plastic Death made me miss playing music, which is something i haven’t felt in years. all from an album that starts with a conversation about CrankGameplay’s dead youtube channel. good lord
i like this album a normal amount. go listen to it a few times. my favorite tracks are cul-de-sac and commatose
Wish
i watched Wish with a couple of friends and knew i probably wasn't going to like it. with that in mind, i gave myself a challenge: i wanted to find one thing about this movie that i genuinely really loved. it could be anything, and loving it for ironic reasons was allowed.
here's the complete list of things i loved about Disney's Wish (2023):
i love the one shot where King Magnifico stirs an evil caldron evily. i thought it was hilarious. what was he cooking
i loved that the end credits included a reference to Dinosaur 2001 at all, and i loved that they paid homage to Big Hero 6 by showing the forgettable villain of that movie instead of their Baymax cashcow for some reason. my friends and i saw him show up in the credits and were like "who's the trenchcoat guy??"
you may notice that this list is very short and 50% of it is about the movie's credits. so yeah this movie is not very good
Wish is an empty husk of a movie. everything about it feels so, so hollow - lifeless town squares, uninspired character designs (to quote a friend: "i have all of these characters' hairstyles in The Sims"), characters whose existence is only justified to fill empty space or an overused archetype, and an "evil" villain who lacks charisma and spine in a futile effort to remind the audience of previous disney villains with actual character. even the artstyle lacks any sort of sauce, the watercolor effect they were trying to go for only makes the backgrounds and character textures run together, and the dull lighting makes things look even more faded. it's like disney was scared of making a movie that made its audience feel... anything. all to celebrate 100 years of Disney slop, baby!!!
Some YouTube videos I liked in January: 💥 An Exhaustive Look at Pokemon Brilliant Diamond 💥 TomSka's Guide to Plagiarism 💥 Paradise Bombed (this video is a great piece of journalism and i’m definitely not doing it justice by throwing it into the youtube vid list) 💥 Surprising Our Friends with Zoo Animals 💥 Did FNAF Ever Have a Good Story?
thanks for reading! next month’s roundup will be wild because i’ll likely be reviewing House of Leaves and Hazbin Hotel. can you guess which cursed house gives me a worse headache? WHO KNOWS! (hint: it's Hazbin Hotel)
#under the readmore is pretty long! oh boy i love having opinions about media#most stuff in january i liked a lot though :] good month of stuff!!#review roundup#<- oh boy new tag for this series#long post

Winx Club Seasons & Movies Rating
This is just due to boredom, but... hehe I am biased as I grew up with the later seasons so. Going to rate them from worst to best, at least in the way I feel about them.
Even though its weird to rank the movies with the seasons, but trust me.
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
Season 8: I acually kind of enjoyed season 8 not gonna lie. The first half was misery but it got better when the Trix came in. Though there were only three braincells in that season.
Darcy got 1, Icy and Stormy each got half a brain cell, the Winx each got a sixth of a braincell, and the Specialists didn't get shit.
I feel like part of the reason I acually liked this season is because of the clip of Icy's backstory/her trying to save Sapphire with the Prime Star on youtube a long ass time before the season came out.
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
Season 7: I might just need to watch this season again, but I did enjoy it a decent bit. While in my opinion season 8 is misery in the first half and genually interesting in the second half, season 7 is just a constant "well... okay"
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
Season 5: I feel like season 5 would land below season 7 if I wasn't so emotionally attached to the first 7 episodes. I first watched them on a DVD that had them and both one of the first two movies (probably Magical Adventure) and I watched them so much.
This season was my first introduction to the Trix (also homosexuality) and this is also why I don't mind their Nick voices. Even though the Nick dub is... the Nick dub, I still like it for nostalgia's sake.
The Lilo episode and the Rainbow Horse something something episode were my favourite as a child and honestly it still is.
The pillar quest episodes of season 5 make me want to delete that part of the season, and how the episodes sometimes drag on to two episodes when it could've just been as one (ie, the gem episodes).
Musa's episodes were amazing.
Tritanus x Icy was... eh I don't have strong feelings about that. Love Darcy and Stormy getting disgusted by it though.
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
Mystery of the Abyss: This is nostalgia. I don't know what else to tell you... wait.
I have no idea when I first watched this season. I know I was a child but I have no idea how I got my hands on it. Wait. Acually might've been on TV nm.
Then this movie might've been my first introduction to the Trix. Either that or season 5. That's why my standards are low as hell when it comes to the later seasons. Either this or season 5. Most likely near the same time.
Nostalgia. I liked the scene of the Trix kidnapping Sky and almost killing Bloom because of how 'dark' it was. Also liked the idea of Oblivion. OOO and the opening scene where the Winx talk to the students of Alfea.
But the dancing scene at the end.... I want to get that out of my head.
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
Season 3: This is going to get me cancelled that I put season 3 lower than season 6 lol. But literally, I have no emotional attachment to season 3 whatsoever. I only found out it existed after I watched season 7 when it was just beginning to come out.
I only found out about it when I saw a thumbnail of an episode with Valtor on it and I was like... who the hell as that? I literally thought there was nothing between season 2 and the movies (don't ask why I didn't question the Winx having Enchantix I don't know).
And when I first watched the season as someone who was emotionally attached to a certain trio of witches, I saw Valtor and my little child brain hated him. I created a list of seasons I disliked season 3 and it turned into a "why I hate Valtor list" at the time. I was immune to his charm.
I'm currently watching the 4kids dub for season 3 and ugh I wish I either first watched it now when I could actually see Valtor as a good villain, or when I was still a smol child.
It's an amazing season and I'm trying so hard to form an emotional attachment to it. 4kids dub give me mercy for my sins.
Tecna's sacrifice episodes I love though.
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
Season 6: This was the first full season I watched (either this or seasons 1 & 2 I'm not fully sure which, but probably this one before). I immediately loved the mythology vibes as well as Selena's design, and the Dark Witch forms as well as Bloomix.
As the first season I had more of the first seven episodes with, I have such a nostalgic attachment to this season (more so seasons 5 and 4, but anyways). I can't bring myself to hate it.
(Literally mentally memorized the intro at the time to the point where I could play it in my head and visualize it to a T)
This was also the season I watched when I actually tried for my writing. I wrote little fanfictions in my notebooks for all the seasons up until this one, and I only started using dialogue and dialogue tags halfway through writing season 5 because I was afraid of making the characters sounds cringe.
I wrote all of season 6. No skipping episodes I didn't like, which is what I did for the earlier seasons I wrote. With dialogue. Angst. Actual character development.
Up until the Musa-getting-her-voice-stolen episodes as that was when I got more into publishing my writing and soft of left the others behind except for writing oneshots/short fanfictions in my notebooks.
You can never make me hate this season XD. I understand why it's bad and why people hate it, but my heart belongs to this season.
(Thinking of re-writing it, but honestly, that's not likely. Maybe a few one-shots here and there though)
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
Secret of the Lost Kingdom: This was the first movie I watched and it came along with the first few eps of season 4 on DVD. I still vividly remember watching it (once again, the Nick dub) and the beginning scene where the Winx are in robes and they transform into Enchantix still had my heart!
I really need to watch this again because it is so good. I had no idea that Domino was even dead though (watched this before season 1 and 2 sooo) so I just vibed with what was going on.
Mandragora scared me to death.
Loved the Ancestral witches though. Them and the Trix are some of the villains closest to my heart ngl.
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
Magical Adventure: This movie and Secret of the Lost Kingdom are close together, but this one I enjoy watching more currently. I remember as a child watching the Pixies get their village invaded by the Trix, and how Icy genually looked afraid of Belladonna.
I got robbed though.
Cause I watched the Nick dub which removed several scenes from whatever the original dub was (Dubbing Brothers or something I dunno). I didn't watch the Alfea celebration scene or the Winx chilling in Gardenia Park scene until two years ago and damn I felt betrayed.
I need to watch all the movies again I swear. Even Mystery of the Abyss.
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
Season 4: This was the second season I had the first seven episodes of along with a movie (season 4 came along with the Secret of the Lost Kingdom movie I think).
But even before then I saw the Amazon episodes on TV and that was my very first introduction to Winx Club. I remember watching the one where the specialists got captured and all. The dub I watched was the Nick dub for this season and not the Rai, so I favour the Nick dub of this season but then again I've only watched the Rai dub of it once.
AHHH I love this season.
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
Season 1: This season as well as season 2 was the first full seasons I watched after I watched season 6 all the way through. I was told that OH there are seasons that show the beginning of Winx so I watched them.
(I watched the Rai dub for this one initially and only found out about the Nick specials about a year ago. I actually vibe with them ngl cause once again, Nick voices + nostalgia)
(I've watched the 4kids dub for this season only a few months ago and honestly, it's a vibe. Gotta love it. Definitely gonna do it again)
I've watched this season so many times and I still love it. The angst! The dialogue! (Even though understandably it is a bit awkward and cringy at times but so sue me).
Not as much emotional attachment as season 6, 5, and 4 but I still really love it and it is so good. I vaguely remember when watching this season for the first time was that, the Trix are scary as hell, and two, that Lucy was gorgeous even without the disguise and I was so confused about the Miss Magix episode at the time.
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
Season 2:
I still vividly remember watching the first episode with Aisha trying to break into Darkar's fortress, but that's all I remember from watching this season.
The soundtrack is ingrained into my brain (ie, the song playing in the background while Musa is standing over her mom's grave) and the concert episodes I think (key word think) were my favourites and they still are. They're my comfort episodes and ahhh love them.
I found Darkar more tolerable than Valtor ngl, but as a child I still didn't like him too much since, again, my favourite villains were the Trix.
There's so many good things about this season and it's still my favourite one to watch.
(Also the Cloud Tower episodes are amazing).

Yes, Blake is scary because hubris makes him blind to any sort of reason. But REGULUS --
I have words. Starting with the fact that, to me, Regulus is the scariest Redacted villain.
Let me explain.
I'm going to preface this by saying that no, Regulus does not scare me. It's the idea and dynamic between Regulus and his listener, who I will be dubbing "Mine," that's legitimately unsettling.
Let's break this down. "Mine" is an uninformed, unempowered human. Regulus is a cloaked Empathy Daemon of unknown age. Already, we have an insane power imbalance. I think this is the most imbalance we've seen in terms of power and knowledge from any Prime Redacted couple (if I'm wrong, please let me know). And it's only made worse by what Regulus does with his power over "Mine."
Can you imagine having an invisible stalker? Being watched at all hours of the day and never even knowing until they reveal themselves? That's chilling. Beyond that, you can't even see them when they do eventually reveal themselves, and you have no context as to why that might be. Magic doesn't exist to you -- there's no possible way for this to be happening. But it is.
And when this stalker finally speaks to you and confesses that they've been watching your every move, it's unnatural. They're speaking in your mind. That shouldn't be possible. You can't see them, you hear them in your mind -- could it all be in your head? Is this all just a really bad dream?
You aren't able to move. You can feel them on you, but even the parts of you that aren't touching them are paralyzed in place.
They tell you that they're going to fill in the gaps. They're going to "pour themselves into your mind like water." You're told that "you won't get a moment of respite." The invisible stalker's voice is bouncing around your brain, reverberating and echoing in your mind. And you're helpless.
You don't understand what's happening, and you're clearly completely at the mercy of whoever or whatever this being is. Who knows? Maybe if it really is a dream, then you'll just wake up from it all. Sitting up in bed, walking to the kitchen, and making breakfast, getting back to your old routine. Maybe if you just ride this out, it'll all end soon..
And that's the thing. It DOES. "Mine" is saved by the Department, gets their memories wiped, and they start a new relationship. They're happy. Regulus gets taken to containment to be rehabilitated, and it's all over.
Until it's not.
I'm gonna be honest, I low-key was a little "meh" about Regulus being more open with "Mine." It took away the intimidation of their difference in knowledge and made the relationship a little less interesting to me. That is, of course, until that most recent Regulus video came out.
Pardon my southern, but Y'ALL. That shit was insane. That audio put me on edge the entire time. The distortions, the off-putting atmosphere of the dream, the transition from "they are safe in my grasp" to "I'm going to crush the stars between my fingers and make new ones" -- all of it. Chef's kiss. Him saying that he knows it's going to hurt, but that it'll be worth it? Because they'll finally be perfect? It's so insane.
He wants to mold "Mine." That's what makes him so interesting to me. Other yanderes will be all, "oh, you're perfect the way you are, and no one will ever touch you." Regulus? Nah. To him, "Mine" is almost perfect. In every sense except for one: They're still thinking about the outside world. And it drives him crazy.
Overwhelming their thoughts with his voice and presence at all hours of every day (which, as someone who can hardly stand being in a packed grocery store for too long, is a terrifying prospect) wasn't enough. He has to make his reality their reality. That's the only way that they'll finally be perfect.
"I'll make myself so much a part of you that they wouldn't be able to separate us no matter how hard they tried."
#he's just the closest thing we have to audio horror#and i think it's neat :)#redacted audio#redacted asmr#redactedverse#redacted regulus#i still get rockwell vibes tho#that's never going away

Kuaidul for the ask game!
Jeez that was fast. 😅
Okay. You ask so you shall receive!
KUAIDUL VELGEAR!
Why I LOVE him
To keep these answers as brief as I possibly can (funny joke when you're asking me to talk about my heart's savior), I absolutely ADORE Kuaidul and always have. I relate to him deeply, I find him fascinating, I love his smooth voice, I love his over the top mannerisms, I really just love everything about him and on top of everything, he's just consistently fun to watch. I could watch his shenanigans or even just listen to him talk for hours.
(More below. And fair warning. It did indeed get pretty long.)
What I like about his appearance
Is "everything" a valid answer? I love his long wild blond hair and want to run my fingers through it. I love the lightning marks on his cheeks, they add such a spark to his design no pun intended. I love his big adorable green eyes. I love his flowing cape/cloak whatever it's called and I love his pink sword and spiked shoulders and just everything about his design is really eye-catching to me.
Dub name or original name?
Kuaidul ONLY has his original name at the time of writing this and even if the dub changes his name, I will always prefer his original name because his name is incredibly meaningful. Literally. It means "rush duel". Even his name is something I love about him. Because it gives me so much to analyze and think about, whether his name was his choosing or his asshole Creator's, there's meaning there either way and it's interesting to think about.
OTP/OT3
I have an OT3! Yeah, I'm not choosing an OTP between these pairs. I've been shipping Kuaidul with my RP OC, Hawk, for quite a while partially due to there not being a canon character with a good potential shipping dynamic with Kuaidul... Before Fukamura came along and I decided "Screw it! It's polycule time!" and now the three of them are a throuple in the making and it's just really precious to me. I love writing that softer more vulnerable side of Kuaidul, along with doting and cutely mischievous sides that all come out a lot around Hawk and Fuka. It's just fun writing someone as proud and grandiose as Kuaidul being in love, and he's really wholesome and sweet with both of them.
NOTP
Well that's obviously the Creator. Not just cuz I hate his guts, for reasons I'm not derailing this post to get into as I want to keep it positive, but because he's Kuaidul's dad. That's how I've always interpreted their relationship so it's a huge nope from me as anything other than familial.
Favourite Card!
Yeah no shit it's Transamu Prime Armor Nova. I love his fusion monster as well, I love his Extreme Fusion card (in fact that's definitely second), I love his new Transamu, I love prime tribute summoning as a concept, I love that his cards were inspired by those around him (I relate to that as an artist), but it's the symbol of his deck, the tribute monster that makes tributes truly admirable and formidable even by rush duel standards that really catches my eye. I love the way he's summoned and he just looks incredible.
Favourite Moment
You expect me to pick ONE?!?!??
He has at least ONE moment that makes me go crazy in every episode he's in. And yes. I do mean every episode. Even the smaller appearances. I could go with the sheer epicness of him summoning Transamu Prime Armor Nova for the first time or his grand return in season 3. I could go with the unexpected but very welcome fun of him unexpectedly stepping in to duel Fukamura or exposing Fukamura's feelings in 4K. I could even say the tragic but ultimately character defining moment of him letting go of his attempted fusion with Yudias and accepting his impending death. But if I have to pick just one, I wanna say the moment where Kuaidul truly caught my attention and made me fall in love. This scene right here when he first takes over Yudias:
Because Kuaidul didn't quite have me smitten from his very first scene. Intrigued yes, but slightly nervous he would be a Sevens retread in some way, and the episode having the characters suspect that the creator of the Velgearians could've been Otes wasn't inspiring much faith. But this scene. This scene of Kuaidul taking over Yudias out of nowhere, almost like a jumpscare, and speaking in such a smooth unbothered voice with these occasional sassy quips while explaining his insanely over the top plan had my eyes and ears GLUED on him. I call him Go Rush's saviour for a reason. He fully reignited my interest in the show with his charm, silliness, intrigue, and just sheer fun factor and I have that amazing scene all the way back in episode 75 to thank for sparking my interest.
Least Favourite Moment
Uhhhhhhhh... That's tough. I really don't have any particular moment where I dislike Kuaidul, at least not for something he didn't make up for. So... I guess my only real answer to "least favourite Kuaidul moment" is this:
Not only because this scene drove me up a wall trying to figure out what the heck was happening for the longest time but now because I hate how this scene is constantly viewed as "Kuaidul absorbing the Creator." That's more of a fandom issue I'll admit but it really bothers me when people say or imply that Kuaidul initiated the merge with the Creator. He didn't. He ran after the Creator, he revealed his Soul Galaxy, but that's it. The one who initiated the merge was the Creator, who smirked evilly as he did so if you look closely:
Fandom problems aside though, the scene just upsets me. To me, it always looked like Kuaidul was being attacked and knowing now that the Creator is "merging" with him doesn't make it look less like an attack. If anything, considering that Kuaidul later attempts to take over Yudias via a merge, which is unquestionably an act of violence in the eyes of everyone, the Creator's merge with Kuaidul looks EVEN MORE violent and obviously I hate seeing my favourite character in pain. So this scene is I guess by default my least favourite with Kuaidul.
Other than his death I guess but honestly, that scene is really well done. It's sad as hell but it's supposed to be so it works.
Would I fuck, marry, or kill him
Okay ending off on a sillier note thank god cuz that previous part got more ranty than I expected (and it's something that should probably be its own post eventually).
Anyways, I would obviously marry Kuaidul. I really hope that was obvious. I plan to have at least Hawk marry him and, come on. I'm also obviously eyeing this piece of blond heaven carnally. You all know this.
He's just. Fantastic. One of only two characters who's remotely in the running for my favorite YGO character and honestly, Kuaidul is more than just a character to me. He's something, someone, deeply personal to me and continues to inspire me, artistically but also personally, to this day. I love him as much as one possibly can love a fictional character and he's a light that shines in my darkest nights who gives me hope and joy when I need it.
...god that was cheesy but you get the point.
#go rush spoilers#yugioh go rush spoilers#kuaidul velgear#yugioh go rush#ygo go rush#go rush#I don't fucking trust the creator

JACOBIN FICTION CONVENTION MEETING 34: DÉLICIEUX (2021)
1. The Introduction
Hello, dear Citizens, and welcome back to Jacobin Fiction Convention. I’m not feeling too great today so please forgive me if this review seems shorter and a little half assed. But I didn’t want to cancel the promised review yet again so here we are.
So, this movie came to my attention completely by accident during a flight from Moscow to Istanbul a while ago. The synopsis included the year 1789 and the setting is France, so you can BET that I was immediately curious and watched the entire thing in one sitting.
(Btw, it’s available on Amazon prime in French and English, but can be watched for free online in the Russian dub.)
That being said, this movie is far from flawless and still warrants a full review, so let’s begin today’s meeting in earnest, shall we?
2. The Summary
This movie tells the story about Pierre Manceron, a former chef who decides to leave his position when his noble employer and said employer’s friends mock Manceron’s new dish and generally impede his creativity.
After the scandal, Manceron and his son move in with a family friend and open up a small tavern, but the former chef decides not to create new dishes ever again. Little does he know, a mysterious woman named Louise is about to cross paths with him.
Eager to become Manceron’s apprentice in cooking and to make sure he begins to cook again like he used to, Louise nevertheless seems to have an agenda of her own and the secrets she keeps might just ruin everything.
3. The Plot
Overall, it’s a good story with nice pacing and structure. Of course, this story of the first restaurant in France is pure fiction but it is a fictional movie that doesn’t pretend to be a documentary, which is awesome.
Also, while Frev isn’t at the center of the story, it is mentioned quite a lot and is, in fact, part of the reason why the main villain, the former employer, gets his comeuppance in the end. It also overlaps with the storyline of opening a completely new type of eatery, since gone are the days of dingy inns and lavish feasts of nobility.
Aside from all that, I loved the found family trope used in the story, as over its course Louise bonds with Manceron and his son, thus finding a new family and a new purpose in life. I could’ve been fine without Manceron and Louise falling in love though, but that’s just me.
4. The Characters
At first, Pierre Manceron came off as a cliché reluctant cynical mentor so I was prepared not to care about him much. I was pleasantly surprised though, since he gets some nice development later on and he is realistically flawed. He is a womanizer, he can be a stubborn mule and he does attempt to hit on Louise after finding out she used to be a sex worker (read: kiss her). Luckily, his behavior is never romanticized by the narrative.
To his credit, Manceron quickly realizes that Louise isn’t okay with this treatment and never attempts to pull those stunts ever again and grows out of his time period-accurate views on women. For example, while initially correctly stating that most apprentices are young men, he does eventually begin to teach Louise and really begins to respect her, even helping her humiliate the shit out of the villain in the end.
Louise herself is my favorite character though.
I think making her a middle aged woman instead of a young ingenue is quite a bold choice. She too is flawed and at first only needs this apprenticeship to seek revenge on the noble who used to employ Manceron. Her past is troubled and includes becoming a widow and losing all of her children, for example.
However, she later genuinely becomes attached to her mentor and to his son and gets her revenge not in the way she originally wanted, but in a way that is far more harmless and doesn’t put her loved ones at risk.
Louise is also the proverbial brains behind the establishment she and Manceron open up and comes up with the majority of the innovations they use in the restaurant, like menus and specials of the day.
Benjamin, Manceron’s son, is a young adult interested in the works of the philosophers of the Enlightenment and in the upcoming revolution. He’s an idealist, sometimes to a fault, but he’s a genuinely nice guy who accepts Louise even before Manceron himself does, this avoiding the “jealous kid” trope.
Jacob, Manceron’s friend who takes him and Benjamin in, is a fairly minor character but I did like him. He’s a bit of a drunk, but a very caring man.
Duc de Chamfort, the main villain, is an ass. A typical pompous noble believing only nobility should have access to tasty food since only they can “appreciate it”. He is also a metaphorical thread connecting Louise (the woman he wronged in the past) and Manceron (his former chef whom he claims to respect but treats like shit), thus becoming a catalyst for the entire storyline. Fortunately, he does get a satisfying humiliation when the heroes trick him into eating at their restaurant while surrounded by people of lower class and confronting him about his crimes.
These are the most noteworthy characters in my opinion.
5. The Setting
I liked the setting, even though some female costumes aren’t accurate due to lack of shawls (fichu) that would usually cover up the cleavage.
Other than that, it’s pretty good in terms of scenery and costumes. I especially liked the changes in the color scheme and the lighting as the shabby inn is transformed into a much more welcoming restaurant.
As for the food, it looked just amazing!!!
I also loved details like confusion about how to spell Manceron’s name (fixed spelling didn’t exist).
6. The Acting
Isabel Carré (Louise) is my favorite here, but most actors did an amazing job. I found the duke a bit hammy, but I think it’s probably the screenwriter and director who are to blame. Or maybe it’s because creating a somewhat comical villain was the whole point.
7. The Soundtrack
Not exactly a masterpiece, but quite good.
8. The Conclusion
To sum up, this movie is a pretty good fictional story about found family, changes in the food industry and the French Revolution.
Not a perfect movie by any means, but I found it pretty enjoyable so you can check it out if you want.
With that, today’s meeting has officially come to an end.
Stay tuned for updates, everyone!
Love,
Citizen Green Pixel

I watched fate so you don't have to. This has been in my drafts since yesterday. I honestly didnt know if I was going to post this. Don't worry I don't go through Netflix to watch it I pirated it netwinx won't get views on Netflix from me. Honestly it's such a blur and made my head explode I never laughed unironically and cussed at a tv show this much in my entire life.
Fucking hell this show is fucking mixing all first three seasons of the cartoon to get their second season Rosalind and bloom had a icy and bloom type confrontation shadow haunt kinda and realix and valtor what the fuck and it’s only 7 episodes
I honestly thought that sebastian was going to be their version of hagen. Not valtor with darkar motivations and the more I learn a WOW the more I think it’s a adaptation of that because sebastian looks more like the sebastian from there
Bloom talked so much fucking shit to aisha about being farah’s pet she should look in the mirror now from let her out from flip flopping from trusting her to not to trusting her again then doing her homework this is all the things she accuse aisha of doing ohh I have so many words for her
You remember how quickly how the cartoon got over the initial love triangle in szn 1? yeah this show got over it quicker they only bring it up once and Stella is only affected
The outfits are a little better this season they aren't like winx better more like wannabe pinterest or out of touch adult trying to by clothes for their kids better. Also stella physically looks more like daphne thus season I see daphne to be a cottagecore queen. They finally put bloom in blue.
They made Stella look like the mom from modern family it was styled pretty every once and a while
Bloom is so much worse this season
On tumblr we often joke about sky and skloom being boring. But this sky is giving wonder bread skloom is giving stale. I wanted to skip every skloom scene because it was giving nothing why was I supposed to care abt them when I didn't even see their development.
Honestly andreas was a low calorie charlie hunnam. And I suppose to feel bad for him when he kill his father whom he probably only knew for two years of his life collectively.
A list of who fate whitewashed, flora via terra Musa saladin via saul stella's uncle whom I assume is Celsius he could just be an oc they made sure not to say his name
My mind stopped working at how beatrix died the only words that came out of my mouth was what the fuck three times because what the fuck was that death scene
Sky's entire arc this season was as kennie jd puts it "a brooding hot 25 year old teenager"🎶
Only this show could make a friendship between a villain and hero more believable then their main friend group. Stormy and stella would laugh at how their fate counterparts being friendly
Stormy would throw a fit if she knew her fate counterpart was a fairy
Beatrix and Aisha and kinda stella were the most likeable characters in this season yes my girl Aisha can be the best girl even in the the shitty adaptation.
Flora is fine ig but she acts nothing like flora. Terra tells one of the girls that flora is shy but all we get is flora not being shy closed off maybe but shy no.
What happened to marco?
I hate that daphne isn't a character in general but it's also great for me because know the cant ruin her
I hate that that was the sky resurrection scene. Cartoon sky did died for bloom and friends only so he could just die without cause because bloom was to stupid not to think of burning the fucking vines
What was the point of making terra and sam siblings when they don't have any scenes together
They dubbed down on not making Aisha a princess and gave the black girl a treacherous love interest
Rosalind who looked like a prime minister and acted nothing like she did last season too the point were they could've said she was a different character and I would've been like ok. Also was I suppose to be sad or elated or feel anything when she was killed.
Terra and flora are second cousins by marriage? and it was only brought up once because they keep calling each other their best friend which there is nothing wrong with your cousin being your best friend at all
Istg that fate has writer’s going through tumblr post for idea because I kid you not bloom is a 1,000 years old
Bloom murders a person goes to trial gets sentenced somewhat the get off scott free. I honestly don't remember how she got out of this plotline.
Musa pulled a darcy with sam
We get introduced to the greater value demodogs
In conclusion winx fans all over the world could have done a better job making a show. I'm glad I'm done with this show I only watched because I wanted to make a youtbe video because I'm better at expressing myself when I'm talking then writing. I will not be watching the third season hope they don't get one.
#i binged this show in in two days and im not touching it again#i watched it so you don't have too#anti fate the winx saga#netwinx

“Oftentimes, my taste continues to surprise me and bring new things to the table. There are so many different ways that a goofball can be made. You can have a himbo or someone who takes himself way too seriously. I absolutely fell in with Kunikida in Bungo Stray Dogs." (Dot)
Okay, so this has been in my drafts since... uhh December and I just kinda never really knew what to say about Kunikida. It was I think easier for me to go to Ranpo because I think he was just simpler and easier, he was the cute one that I could easily classify. But coming up with the right words for why this lovable dork has my whole heart was harder for me. I know that there has been a severe lack of updates on edits since June but for the last few months I was kinda really into Stranger Things and I couldn't make an edit of my man there without it looking kinda weird. But now that I'm finally back and this man for someone came back with a vengeance I really wanted to discuss this absolute unit of a man.
So my relationship with Kunikida started pretty much the second that he opened his mouth. Let me tell you a little something about me. I have a thing for deep voices if your new around here and it pretty much all started with one dub voice actor, Patrick Seitz. It all started when I was seventeen and I started looking at Fairy Tail like "Huh Laxus be hitting different." Laxus was my first Seitz character where he used that tone of voice and there's just something about that voice specifically that hits different. So when I heard Kunikida I had this moment of "Oh shit, he sounds like Laxus, whelp I better stamp my simp card now and just get that over and done with." I'm a simp for that voice I don't know what it is but every time he uses it, even for Endeavor who I later on admitted that I simped for as well.
I just love Kunikida's personality, how he can go from being overly serious to being over the top goofy in a matter of seconds. There's just something that I find so ridiculously cute about that. It's always been one of my favorite things about his character. How he goes from being stone cold serious to having some goofy over the top reaction to something, usually something that Dazai does, it just always makes me laugh insanely loudly as a running joke. One of my favorites is when he's miming kicking the Yakuza's ass or when he's signing his paperwork insanely fast. He's just always a delight when he does comedy.
But I love his protective side too and the way that he looks out for Atsushi and makes sure that he feels at home in the ADA. The way that he pretty much took him under his wing and made sure that he was alright in the end of the day even though he was still adjusting and everyone around Atsushi has this big and loud personality. I have this thing where I love protective men and even though Kunikida might not be the prime example of that he's still someone that I love desperately. I always loved seeing him look out for Atsushi even though it might be out of exasperation more than actual affection and love of his comrades.
All in all I just think that Kunikida is absolutely perfect, top tier man from this show. I've only seen about a season and a half of it so far but I do look forward to watching him more and that's the reason that I consider the show to be one of my favorites.

5 Favorite Films I Watched in April 2021
98.12.28 Otokotachi no Wakare (2005) (dir. Kensuke Kawamura)
“Otokotachi No Wakare'' is the name of the final tour that legendary Japanese dub group Fishmans had played. It roughly translates to “A Gentleman’s Farewell”, originally referring to these shows as the last sets of concerts that longtime bassist Yuzuru Kashiwabara would play with the group, signalling the end of an era for the collective. However, this tour would be the last Fishmans would play as a band, as lead vocalist and songwriter Shinji Sato would die of heart failure three months later.
I had decided to explore the Fishmans discography earlier this month, and I fell in love with it. Their fusion of dub, dream pop, shibuya-kei, ambient music, and even post-rock was absolutely blissful to the ears, with records such as Long Season and Uchu Nippon Sagataya being some of the best music I’ve listened to, but where they really shined was in their live performances. 98.12.28 Otokotachi no Wakare was originally released as a live album, documenting their final performance as a group, on December 28, 1998. It’s cited by many fans of them as the artistic peak of Fishmans, as the thesis statement to what they originally set out to do as a band. The apex of their artistic evolution. A catchy, funny, blissful, and transcendent performance, with incredible lighting and godly sound mixing. Everyone is on top form, from Motegi Kinichi’s incredible percussion work, to Honzi’s versatility on the keyboards, accordion, and violins, to Kashiwabara Yuzuru’s colorful basswork, to Darts Sekiguchi’s creative guitar playing, and Shinji Sato’s angelic, voice. Through the power of retrospect, it seemed like the band and Sato himself knew what was coming. They play and sing those last notes of “Long Season”, the final song on the setlist, like they’re the last notes they’ll ever play together.
What makes the concert film even more of a sorrowful watch is that the venue that it was performed at, Akasaka Blitz, no longer exists. It shut down in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was never able to financially recover. The film feels ghostly as a result, knowing that Fishmans in its prime can never exist again, nor can the venue. The final shot of the “Long Season” performance ends on Sato singing his notes with a heavenly white light on him, which may be the most thematic of the Fishmans legacy. Through this performance and through his death, he had achieved a status as a tragic hero amongst music communities, as an iconic figure who will be surely missed, but one who will be remembered for his talents for a long time.
Crip Camp (2020) (dir. Nicole Newham & James LaBrecht)
When it came to discussing Oscar snubs, one of the most made-fun of was the film My Octopus Teacher winning Best Documentary over more celebrated, important works such as Time and Crip Camp. I already saw Time in December of 2020 and can vouch for its greatness, bold experimentation with the documentary format, and its commentary on the evils of the United States prison system. But Crip Camp was a brand new watch for myself, and I fell in love with it. I hope that camps like Jened can continue to exist. Where disabled kids can be themselves with no judgement, and no hierarchy. Even though America has improved itself in terms of allowing disabled people the access to buildings and the civil rights that they deserve, there’s still a lot of work to be done, most notably in the hateful attitude that higher-ups in schools and governments will give disabled people. The people shown in this film were raised on Woodstock-era rock and roll and they are one of the only groups of people to have actually contributed to any sort of change for themselves, as a lot of the rich white able-bodied hippies weren’t doing shit for them, and would most likely become self-satisfied yuppies themselves. The final 20 minutes of this film made me cry, especially the parts where the former campers saw the field where Jened used to occupy.
Female Trouble (1974) (dir. John Waters)
My favorite quotes of this movie are:
"Why don't you take your toolkit and go fuck a garage?!"
"How many times have I told you to play Car Accident outside?!"
"Filthy hetero stink shit."
"You sneaking, conniving, little abortion!"
John Waters has been called the Pope of Trash, a filmmaker who shows the grossest of humanity, and yet his films are some of the funniest and most bizarre of all time. Characters would eat shit, get fucked by lobsters, and in the case of Female Trouble, go on murderous killing sprees because they didn’t get a pair of cha cha heels. Waters’ films are low-budget, daring, and unabashedly queer, with the most hilarious character in the film being Aunt Ida, hoping that her son won’t be straight, because “the world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life.” Divine, Waters’ main star, is deliciously evil as Dawn Davenport, a horrible person and an even worse mother. I remember hearing a quote from Waters that Divine wanted to be Godzilla, and the parts he wrote for him give that monstrous feeling that exists in the original incarnation of Godzilla, but also Divine's acting alongside Waters' writing makes Davenport so hilarious, a character that just completely revels in her villainy. A phenomenal film.
The Heartbreak Kid (1972) (dir. Elaine May)
Elaine May is one of New Hollywood’s unsung heroes, a filmmaker who first came from the world of theater, and was mistreated by the system itself. The studio released a cut she didn’t approve of for her debut film, A New Leaf, she had to hide her footage of her third film, Mikey and Nicky, so the studio couldn’t touch it. The Heartbreak Kid is one of her greatest films, a romantic comedy about the lengths men will go to just to get laid. Charles Grodin plays Lenny, a newlywed man who is on a honeymoon with his wife Lila. While he is there, he falls in love and lust with a younger woman, Kelly, and has to find a way to be with her. The character of Lenny I could see being a big influence on the films of the Safdie Brothers, as he has to think quickly on his feet to get out of trouble, which is what characters like Howard Ratner and Connie Nikas had to do. Cybill Shepherd as Kelly is so charming and funny. Even though Lenny is a piece of shit, anyone in the world would’ve fallen in love with her. A great film, and a great script by Neil Simon with a haunting ending. Grodin’s delivery of “I’m not dying, I want out of the goddamn marriage” will stay with me forever.
Rock ‘n’ Roll High School (1979) (dir. Allan Arkush)
I won’t say too much about this one because I’m planning to write fully about it, but this is definitely one of the best movies about the positive impact on rock music on teenagers. Riff Randell is a songwriter who hopes to write for her favorite band, the Ramones, all while making her high school the loudest, rockingest high school around. It’s a hilarious film, extremely well shot, directed and blocked, and has the most romantic scene featuring a sex doll I’ve seen. PJ Soles forever.
Other movies I really enjoyed:
Another Round (2020) (dir. Thomas Vinterberg)
The Beach Bum (2019) (dir. Harmony Korine) (rewatch)
Carrie (1976) (dir. Brian de Palma) (rewatch)
The Father (2021) (dir. Florian Zellar)
Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966) (dir. Jun Fukuda)
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) (dir. Jun Fukuda)
A New Leaf (1971) (dir. Elaine May)
Wolfwalkers (2020) (dir. Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart)

She-Ra S5 E05 - Save the Cat
ARE YOU READY TO HEAR MY THOUGHTS ON THE BEST SHE-RA EPISODE EVER? SO AM I!
Sorry this took so long. I was pretty nervous to talk about this episode, to be honest, because I love it so much and was scared I’d forget something or wouldn’t do it justice. Don’t know if I still need to say this at this point (since it’s been so long), but there will be spoilers for the rest of the season in this post!
- First of all, and I’ve already talked about this in my review of Stranded, but I need to say it again: Just the premise that Adora is going back to save Catra from Horde Prime really makes their story come full circle: Back in the pilot, Adora left the Horde without Catra, and Catra has been accusing her of “leaving her behind” ever since. In Catra’s mind, Adora leaving the Horde meant that Adora didn’t care about her, and it’s been a huge source of grief and bitterness for her. And now, so many seasons later, even after Catra has hurt so many people, even after she’s asked Adora not to come for her, Adora is literally walking up to Horde Prime himself (way more dangerous than Hordak’s version of the Horde) and endangering her mission and the entire world because she doesn’t want to leave Catra behind again. Because Catra means that much to her. It’s such good storytelling! If Corridors was what started Catra’s redemption, then I think Save the Cat is what redeemed Adora in Catra’s eyes (or at least, what made her understand that Adora does care about her).
- I love how determined Adora looks in that beginning shot. That’s the look of a girl about to go save her gf!
- I thought it was a bit strange that the clones didn’t notice that Adora’s talking to the others on her way to Prime, but since Prime later reveals he knows her friends are there, they probably actually did notice and just didn’t say anything.
- I wish they’d kept that scene of Glimmer having a more elaborate flashback, but I get that they just didn’t have the time for it.
- I love how Entrapta just goes *heart eyes* at the many clones. And Bow asking if they’d believe they’re the inspectors 😂 - great way to bring back that gag.
- “You would never risk the safety of your Catra.” PRIME SHIPS IT. No, seriously though - Prime says he “sees all” (and we know he’s seen Catra’s thoughts) and he said “your” Catra. This, and some other lines in this episode, made me realize it would be canon. (Also, fun fact, because I watched some bits of this show in other languages for fun: As awful as the French dub is for changing that “Kyle had a crush on Rogelio” line to “Catra had a crush on Rogelio”, in this instant they did really well: In French, Prime goes a step further and says “your precious Catra” instead of just “your Catra”.)
- The way Prime touches his clones is so creepy.
- Entrapta asking Wrong Hordak (thinking he’s Hordak) if he recognizes her made me so emotional. I wasn’t even that into Entrapdak back in s2/s3, but the way their relationship was written in season 5 really made me ship it. It’s about the PINING, the LONGING, the TRAGEDY, the way his memories of her make him overcome two mindwipes... I’m here for it!
- I always wonder if it hurts Entrapta when someone grabs her by the hair. Since her hair is magical and all that.
- “We’re not keeping him.” “But we broke him! We’re responsible for him now.” Okay, I love Wrong Hordak. I love how Bow talks about ‘keeping’ him as if he was a pet. And I also like how Entrapta immediately realizes how useful having him around could be. Also, I love that they name him “Wrong Hordak” and seriously just keep calling him that. 😂
- “I don’t fight for the first ones. I fight for my home, for myself and for my friends.” I honestly really like that the show never showed us the first ones or Adora’s birth family. Not that it would necessarily be a bad thing, but I like the message that it doesn’t really matter where she came from - Etheria is her home and what she’s fighting for and that’s enough.
- “Of course, your Catra.” He said it again!
- “She hoped you would come for her, poor thing.” Oh, the angst is real, I love it! Just thinking about Catra (who’d told Adora to stay away) eventually getting so scared that she started to wish Adora would come for her after all... I love angsty stuff like this.
- Oh, that first look of Catra with the gelled back hair and green eyes is so properly creepy.
- When Wrong Hordak complained about the ship being designed “so that it may only be navigated by one who access to the hivemind” it reminded me of Entrapta’s castle that only she can navigate. I think some people have pointed out before that Entrapta and Horde Prime are foils to each other (especially when it comes to Hordak), so that’s a really nice parallel there.
- How did Glimmer manage to open that door when she’s running from the clones? I thought only the clones could open them? Is that a mistake, or is there some canon explanation?
- “What did you do to her?” Oh, I love it when Adora’s so worried about Catra. These two and how cute they are will be the death of me.
- Oh, Prime’s so creepy when he touches Catra... I love him as a villain, but I love to hate him, you know?
- “My place is with Horde Prime, Adora. I don’t want to leave.” Can we talk about the parallel between this line, and Catra insisting back in season 1 (in Promise, I think) that she doesn’t want to leave the Horde?
- “You broke my heart.” I mean, come on! That’s gay!
- Catra and Adora’s fight is so tragic because it’s the first time they’re fighting but both genuinely don’t want to hurt each other.
- “I’m not leaving without you.” Exactly what Catra wanted to hear from Adora back in The Sword Part 2 - You know what I said in the beginning of this post about their story coming full circle?
- “I don’t wanna hurt you!” “But you have already hurt me.” This is supreme lesbian drama, and it’s so good! (I’ve been waiting so long for a show to give a lesbian romance this kind of attention!)
- Adora’s terrified expression when Catra almost lets herself fall is so painful. And the way she hugs Catra afterwards... my heart.
- Catra and Horde Prime talking together is creepy in just the right way.
- “I always hated that guy in particular.” Hell yes, Glimmer!
- “She was afraid in the end. And she suffered. Perhaps I will make her my new vessel, though she would not last me long.” Oh, the angst hurts so good, I love it! (Why do I love seeing my faves suffer?) Also, this slicked back hairstyle on Catra looks kind of amazing.
- “Why did you come back? We both know I don’t matter.” “You matter to me.” 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Yes, tell her, Adora! Tell her you care! Don’t let her talk herself down like that!
- “Come on, Catra! You’ve never listened to anyone in your life. Are you really going to start now?” I love how this is what gets through to her. I could also just quote the entire dialogue from here because everything about it is pure perfection:
Catra: “You’re such an idiot.”
Adora: [smiling and crying] “Yeah. I know.”
Catra: [laughs]
Adora: “I’m going to take you home.”
Catra: “Promise?”
Adora: “I promise.”
Catra: “Adora...”
I mean, what do I even say to that? Catra affectionately calling Adora an idiot, the callback to Promise, how Adora doesn’t hesitate to say “I promise”, how Catra breaks free of Prime’s control... it’s all so perfect. 😭
- Adora just not hesitating to jump after Catra - that’s love, holy shit!
- God, Aimee’s voice acting when Adora cradles Catra... so good. (And that’s their childhood theme playing in the background.) Didn’t Aimee (or someone else?) say on Twitter that that was intentional since your most vulnerable moments make you feel like a child again, or something like that?
- Adora’s transformation into She-Ra gives me chills every single time. Best scene in the entire show, don’t @ me (or at least second best after the kiss). The way she cradles Catra’s lifeless body, Horde Prime’s taunting words, and then she opens those glowing eyes... amazing. And what makes it even better is that this is her first proper transformation after breaking the sword. We got a tease of it in Stranded, but this is when She-Ra really comes back, and it’s her love for Catra that enables her to transform. PERFECTION.
- “You miscalculated.” Yeah, you miscalculated how gay she is.
- Entrapta whistling Darla over like a dog is amazing. 😂
- Adora carrying Catra bridal style while that epic music plays... I’m living!
- Also, side-note: Adora’s new She-Ra look is SO MUCH BETTER than the old one! She also seems a lot stronger now - look at that fancy stuff she can do with the new sword! (I like the idea that the Sword of Protection was only holding her true power back.)
- That healing scene! Adora’s healed people before, but it’s never looked this gay. And Catra waking up and saying “Hey Adora” is just so fitting.
- That hug... I’m not crying, you’re crying. They’re finally together! And Catra’s clinging to Adora so tightly! 😭 Also, she’s purring! (When I first watched this ep with my sisters, one of them literally went “Finally!” at this moment - mood.)
- Hordak finding the LUVD-Crystal and saying Entrapta’s name also gives me chills. I also just realized that he thought Entrapta was dead until this moment - holy hell!
- One more thing I love about this episode is that their plan to save Catra actually worked. Because it’s a plan that seems so stupid and risky at first, and while you’re watching you kind of expect it to go completely wrong and expect Horde Prime to catch them... and then it seems like he does, only for Adora and her friends to turn things around and succeed. I love that.
- Another thing worth pointing out is the whole symbolism of Catra’s death and rebirth and how it marks the beginning of a new chapter in her life.
So yeah, this is the best She-Ra episode ever, I rest my case. Before I watched season 5, I expected it to be gay (I even estimated the chances of Catradora becoming canon at around 70%), but I didn’t expect it to be THIS gay. This episode went beyond my wildest dreams and expectations. Horde Prime saying “your Catra” twice, that whole “You broke my heart / Prime has set me free of that pain” talk, Adora being so scared for Catra during their fight and so determined to save her, the whole “I’m going to take you home / I promise” part, Adora jumping after Catra and cradling her in her arms, her love for Catra bringing back She-Ra, the bridal carry, the healing scene, the hug, and I could go on. Noelle said on twitter that there were two versions of this episode and the gay version is what we ended up getting - AND IT SHOWS.
This is when I knew for sure that Catradora was going to be canon. Before season 5, I gave it a chance of 70%. After those little hints in the first few episodes, I said 80%. But after Save the Cat, I was 100% sure. I basically already considered it canon after this. I kept wondering how it would happen, but the "if" wasn’t a question to me anymore - so I decided to just lean back and enjoy the ride through the rest of the season :)

Part One: Strangers
Part Two: Friends
[!TRIGGER WARNING!: This installment contains unprotected sex, historical inaccuracies and allusions to previous abuse. Stay safe!]
If he had so glibly dubbed Linton perishing of pneumonia as bad business, he dreaded to come up with a term for whatever Irene had gone through. Christ, spousal discipline. A victim of the so-called 'gentlemen' that brought their wives to heel with the rod, coverture at its goddamn finest. It had always made Arthur's chest tight, made him see red, had him raring to give them a taste of their own medicine despite Dutch's constant preaching about an eye for an eye only makes the world blind.
Womenfolk, for all Arthur's troubles with one in particular, deserved to be seen and heard as much as anyone else. Shit, from a biblical standpoint they were supposed to be cherished, protected, defended if they needed it. Arthur was not a pious man by any stretch; the blood on his hands had him thoroughly convinced of his prime spot in Hell come Judgement Day. But if he needed to resort to thumping the good book to get his point across, he damn well would. Fine gentlemen may not fear overmuch the wrath of one Arthur Morgan, yet they certainly feared for the salvation of their wretched, mealy little souls.
Irene's brown eyes were dark and surprisingly dry as she watched him watch her, the tales she told painting the late Mr. Carson as no man, but a fiend in man's clothing.
Arthur felt a lump form in his throat when she spoke of selling off her damn hair just so she could get free of that bastard. It was clear that after what she had suffered, nearly dying on the side of a mountain was a veritable paradise. She'd had to learn everything the hard way, taking all that she had read about and painstakingly putting it into practice. That she was still alive was a goddamn miracle. A miracle that Arthur didn't feel like testing the charity of. Providence had kept her safe thus far, but just how damn long did she expect that to hold?
What if someone else had found her in that trap? What if he hadn't been hunting that bear? Hell, what if one of those boys from Lemoyne had come across her bathing today? Arthur gritted his teeth. Granted, she wasn't defenseless, not by a long shot, but lone wolves didn't tend to last out in the wilds. It had been sheer coincidence that nothing far worse had happened.
"Come back to camp with me." He interrupted her to offer, his voice rough. "I...me an' the gang, we can keep you safe there. You ain't gotta' live like this anymore, that feller's dead. He can't come to drag you back to that...misery."
She shook her head, her smile sad. "I've been on my own for too long, Arthur. I'm used to it."
"Please." He begged. "I don't...if...look, I...I don't want you to…" he trailed off, frustrated by his inability to articulate the confusing emotions roiling in his chest. "Hell, I dunno'." He muttered, shoving the toe of his boot into the dirt. "Scared for you, I guess."
"I've made it this far, haven't I?"
"What if it wasn't me?" He retorted. "What if every time, it was-"
"It was you, though." Irene interjected softly. "I won't deny that our paths crossing again and again seems like fate, or divine intervention."
Arthur huffed out a breath. "I s'pose, but-"
"You needed someone to listen, and I needed someone to show me kindness."
"Well sure, but-"
"If you had bedded me in Valentine, would that have satisfied your curiosity?" Irene inquired primly. "Nipped your fascination in the bud?"
"Shit, no." Arthur finally managed to get a word in edgewise, shaking his head. "I...you seemed real sweet. Pretty. Sad, in a secret way. I wanted...but then you said all those things and I...I ain't never met a woman that seemed to see me like how you did, Miss Irene. Most folks just see what they can get outta' me."
"I always saw you, Arthur. From the first time we met on the side of that mountain." Irene told him, her voice gone soft once more. "I saw your smile, and your beautiful eyes, and the way you were willing to help. It made me want to help you too."
"M-My--? Shucks, ma'am, I ain't...I mean my eyes is...uh." Arthur yanked at the collar of his shirt. Despite it being unbuttoned, he suddenly felt as though it was too tight. "Well, you're one to talk about beautiful eyes!" He blustered, feeling his gut twist when she looked surprised of all things. "What, ain't anyone ever said somethin' nice to you before? You got nice eyes! And a good heart! Smart words, too, you're intelligent! Shit--I mean, shoot, sorry, ain't tryin' to swear in front of you." He rushed to apologize, worrying at the brim of his hat. "I'm just off-balance is all, ma'am, forgive me."
She waved off his apology, laughing. "Don't be so uptight, Arthur! It's still me."
"But it ain't, that's the thing. I…" he paused yet again, fumbling in his satchel for his journal. "I-I haven't stopped thinkin' of you, Miss Irene. What I'd say if I ever ran into you again." Opening the book to the first sketch of her, he turned it around so she could see. "I never came up with anythin', though. Aside from 'thank you'."
Instead of staying where she was, she approached and sat down alongside him. Those fingers, just as reverential as the first time 'Frank' had seen his sketches, ran down the lines of her face on the page.
They weren't perfect. His memory of her had been blurry with drink and many of his sketches had been scribbled out or erased into gray smudges in frustration. "They're beautiful." She whispered.
"No, you're beautiful." Arthur murmured before he could think better of it. "Nothin' that I could make would ever do you justice, Miss Irene."
She was flushed already from the fire, her hair slowly drying into a wild mess of sun-streaked curls that he longed to run his fingers through. "I wouldn't say that." She tried to deflect his words, smiling shyly down at her hands.
She had been married. Her acting like what he was doing was something new had Arthur damn near distressed. He cupped her chin with his hand, keeping his touch as light as he could bear while he tipped her face up to look at him. "I would."
"You would?" Her tongue darted out to soothe her dry lips, stirring a half-forgotten memory in his mind of her making some sound into his mouth as he kissed her.
"I sure would." He drawled, tilting his head and lowering his mouth to hers. The little whimper that came out of her settled in his abdomen. Was this a bad idea? Probably. "Take the shirt off."
"You told me to put it on!"
"And now, I'm askin' you to take it off." Arthur growled, pressing his mouth against the shell of her ear and breathing, "please."
Irene shivered all over, clinging to his hands like she was trying to keep her composure. Lord knew Arthur's own composure had never been particularly ironclad. She finally released him, her fingers trembling when she reached for the hem of the shirt.
"Easy girl, only if you want to." Arthur pressed a kiss to her cheek, "only if you're willin'. I ain't so brash to believe that you bein' alright with this one time before means that you'd be okay with it now."
"You…" Irene hesitated. "I've never been allowed to say no, Arthur."
Oh, Jesus, that hurt. "Well now you can. Any time. Right now, in the middle, whenever." He forced the words out past his muted, secondhand horror. "I'll stop. I'm not...this ain't about somebody gettin' hurt, okay? This is...I'm tryin' to make you feel good. That's all I want."
Irene squinted up at him, her disbelief evident. "So...it can be good? That's not just something they put in the books so women don't decide to never get bedded?"
Oh Jesus. "Oh, Jesus." Arthur scrubbed helplessly over his stubble with one hand, trying to formulate a response that wouldn't come off as terrifying or lecherous. "So, you...b-but you was married." He floundered.
"Yes?"
"He ain't...I mean you never-?"
"I have never been kissed like you kissed me before, if that answers your question."
"Well, yes and no. I-I reckon yes." Arthur stammered. "Alright, let me...I'll pitch my tent and we'll have a lie down and I'll...I-I guess I'll do my damnedest."
Jesus, he needed a minute. Just a momentary reprieve while he fumbled to unlash the canvas from Chase's back. Christ, his mind was going like Hell's wheels. She had never known pleasure from lying with a man. Never. To the point where she thought it was fabricated. One more nail in that devil's coffin, he supposed. Lord, Arthur prayed he was up for this.
She wanted to help him set up the tent and Arthur had to laugh, his nerves easing a bit at the petulant way she demanded to hold the guylines taut for him. "It's ungentlemanly for me to expect you to help out with stuff like this," he tried to explain.
"If you start pulling some nonsense about how I'm a delicate flower, you will regret it." Irene informed him firmly. "I haven't gotten this far to be treated like glass, Mister Arthur."
"Well, you certainly wasn't protestin' that treatment in Valentine." He chuckled, watching her face go bright red.
"I-I was caught off-guard, that's all! Fell back into old habits!"
"Oh shoah." He shrugged, still grinning. Thunder rumbled in the distance and he quickly opened up the tent flap with a broad, sweeping bow. "After you, ma'am."
She smiled at him and Arthur was hard-pressed to think of a prettier sight than that, the woman sidling past him to enter the tent after she had gathered up her still-damp things.
Arthur Morgan did not consider himself a good man. He did not consider himself a particularly smart man either. But every once in a while even his life could pan out with gratifying and interesting results. Such as an attractive woman who had been masquerading as an attractive man ending up in his tent, waiting on him to show her the...primitive ecstasies of the flesh.
He took his time before joining her however, choosing instead to smoke a cigarette and scan the perimeter of the grove, an idle hand on his revolver.
He definitely wasn't stalling. Definitely wasn't trying to compose himself before he got out of pocket with her. But Jesus, what he would love to do if she was willing!
The sunlight began to wane as the clouds rolled in and Arthur stubbed out his cigarette, carefully saving the remainder for later. No telling when he'd get his hands on a fresh pack, and the last chew he'd indulged in had been so strong it nearly burned a hole in his lower lip. Better to stick to the sticks.
He entered the tent to find Irene sitting cross-legged on her bedroll, still in his shirt (and Lord, that was a whole other article that he needed to address about himself), and she looked up at him expectantly as he ducked his head so he didn't bump the side of the tent. "Was just makin' sure everythin' is safe, Miss Irene." He explained, tying the tent flaps together. Arthur then began the process of unbuckling his holster belt, carefully hanging it from the support by the door. He had only stayed alive this long because Hosea had taught him to always have a revolver within reach. "You nervous?" He asked conversationally while he dropped his hat by the door.
"Perhaps a bit." Irene replied, her truthful words giving him pause. "I am optimistic, however."
"I ain't gonna' hurt you, but you need to be honest with me, okay? Won't hurt my feelin's none if you tell me you don't like somethin'." Arthur assured her, "I can adapt."
"Thank you, Arthur."
Oh Jesus, there it was again. Like a hot brick in his stomach, an intoxicating combination of wariness and arousal. He knelt beside her, tangling his fingers greedily through her short, thick curls. He could feel her trembling slightly, which was...sobering. "Ain't gonna' hurt you." He soothed, making a shushing noise. "Ain't gonna' hurt you. You're okay."
Wide brown eyes stared up at him and Irene nodded slowly.
"You trust me, Miss Irene?" Arthur asked quietly.
Another nod.
"Good." Arthur cupped her face and crushed their mouths together without further ceremony. She gasped into his mouth, her hands finding purchase on his chest where she proceeded to cling to him. He only vaguely remembered how she had reacted to his kiss before, her body threatening to collapse against his own in that cramped little garret that the Saints Hotel considered a rentable room.
"Arthur," she breathed shakily, kissing him at an almost fevered speed. "Is this really how it's supposed to be?"
"Is it good?"
"Oh yes, so good, I-"
"That's the important part sorted, then. Rest'll take care of itself." Arthur nibbled on her lower lip, his teeth gentle in case she needed to pull away. If anything though, she pressed closer. He was pleasantly surprised when she timidly slipped him her tongue, illustrating his enthusiastic approval by welcoming it with his own. "Can I touch you?" He gasped against her lips, his forehead resting on her own. They were fully in each other's space now, but he knew that could change in an instant.
"Please, please." Irene begged, clutching his hands.
"Can I take off the shirt? Can I see you?" was his next question, loaded as it was.
"I…" Irene paused. "I don't know if...you'd want to, honestly."
"Oh believe me, I want." Arthur insisted. "If you want, I want."
"Just like that?"
"Don't need to be any more complicated than that, ma'am." Arthur kept his hands still. "Just a little heavy pettin' even, if that's all you're lookin' for. But I can make you feel real good."
"Heavy petting?" Her brow furrowed. "I'm...unfamiliar, Mister Arthur."
"Yeah, y'know, heavy pettin'. You kinda' just...I mean you uh. Touch. A lot. Usually." He struggled to explain, again finding himself walking the line of trying not to scare her while still giving her the information she sought. "Demonstration? I ain't so good at this." He finally suggested ruefully.
Irene nodded and Arthur drew his index fingers over her collarbone, framing it briefly before he slipped further down. Slowly, so as not to frighten her, he cupped her breasts through the undershirt, letting their weight rest in his palms.
He had to clear his throat before he spoke next. "Okay?" Irene nodded, her expression almost laughably serious. "I'm gonna' move my thumbs now. Just gentle, no pinchin'." Arthur informed her. "You let me know if that's okay."
"Mmhm." She inhaled sharply the second he grazed over her nipples, a little hiccup leaving her. Arthur had never encountered that particular reaction and he lingered in the same spot, swiping his thumbs back and forth across the soft mounds of her breasts. He felt her body begin to react, her nipples waking underneath his touch.
"Okay?" He rasped, his throat dry all of a sudden. Irene looked...drowsy, almost, the woman biting her lower lip and just watching his hands move.
"Feels good." She whispered. "I...I think I like it?"
"You ain't sure yet? Want me to stop?"
Arthur barely got the question out before she said, "no!", flushing immediately afterwards. "I-I mean no, please...please keep going?" She requested, not meeting his eyes.
He chuckled, "okay then. Just relax. I've got you, Miss Irene." Her hands fumbled for purchase on his suspenders and Arthur was delighted when she shoved them off over his shoulders, the woman whimpering as he removed his hands from her briefly to slip out of the loops. "Shh, I'm right here." Arthur murmured, returning to his previous ministrations.
"I don't know what to do." Irene breathed, resting her forehead on his shoulder. "What do I do, Arthur? Can't j-just--" her voice hitched, fingers digging into his upper arms as he continued to gently stroke her. "Sit here, not doing anything."
"Lemme' take care of you for a l'il bit, okay?" The older man offered softly. At his insistence, she laid back, propping herself up on her elbows and then gifting him a tender little cry when he dipped his head to mouth and tease at one of her nipples through the shirt's thin fabric.
Rain began to patter on the tent's canvas roofing, dulling the sounds of the surrounding woodlands. It was like a curtain being drawn, shielding Arthur from the outside and narrowing his world down to nothing but the woman currently arching her entire body up in search of his mouth. Irene reached for him blindly, her hands so delicate in his own when he laced their fingers together and pressed his lips back to her breast through the shirt's material.
She writhed beneath him, little noises of desperation issuing from her without much preamble. It was as if she was starved for touch. In a way, Arthur supposed dimly, they both were. Her guarding her secret, trying her hardest to be cautious and he keeping his own secrets, trying to work around the blatant duality of his existence.
We're thieves in a world that don't want us no more.
But here, here, in this sheltered glade, the two of them might find a moment of reprieve. A haven.
Irene grasped at the hem of the shirt, going to tug it over her head and immediately getting stuck because she hadn't unbuttoned it first. The woman thrashed, nearly elbowing Arthur in the face, and he couldn't help the way his laughter exploded out of him. "Whoa there! Easy, hold on." He said, lending her a hand to unbutton the shirt from the inside so she could get it over her head safely.
She was breathless from giggling by the time they managed to free her from the shirt's clutches, and Arthur had to kiss her again. Tentatively her hands traveled up the back of his neck and found their way to his shaggy hair. She tugged, making him rumble into her mouth. "You wanted to see me?" Irene asked shyly, and Arthur realized she was trying to display some sort of willingness.
"If it's alright, ma'am, I would." He murmured, keeping his eyes on hers. She nodded and Arthur gave her a gentle peck on the lips before drawing back, settling onto his knees so he could really take in the sight.
Outside he had done his best not to ogle. Which had been incredibly difficult. But Arthur Morgan wasn't some skin-hungry yearling, and he could usually determine when to avert his eyes.
In the twilight of the tent she was a damn vision. He reached out and cupped the back of her calf, palming the curve of the muscle that lurked beneath the skin when he moved her leg to open her up just a bit. She was strong, forged of stubborn steel. His eyes traveled up, lingering on the thatch of dark curls at the apex of her thighs. Further up to her breasts, pebbled with gooseflesh and no doubt still feeling the echoes of his mouth. Her collarbone had been so delicate under his hands, like some fanciful artisan’s filigree. That throat, Lord, to tarry there and cover her skin with reminders of him would be heaven-! His eyes shifted to her freckled shoulders, the area littered with old scars. Arthur had the sneaking suspicion that her back would have borne the brunt of what she had gone through.
He wished he could stop time itself and sketch her just like this.
"You're beautiful." He mumbled, only half-aware that he was even speaking. Irene squirmed, covering her face, but Arthur gently caught one of her hands and tugged it away. "Irene, you're beautiful." He repeated, a little louder.
"You...you don't mean that, Arthur." She replied weakly.
"Oh yes I do, ma'am." He insisted, her pulse thundering against his lips when he kissed the inside of her wrist. "Can I…may I?"
Irene nodded rapidly, her head falling back when Arthur spread her legs. He abruptly felt like a starving man at a banquet table. Her cunt was flushed pink, honest, glistening with the slick of her arousal. Her thighs trembled against his forearms.
Jesus.
Arthur rubbed a palm across his face, trying to judge whether his stubble might be a bit too aggressive for the obviously sensitive area. "Hey, I…I'm gonna' try somethin', okay? You let me know if…" he trailed off when he looked up and saw her with her arm over her eyes, hiding from him again. Her cheeks were ruddy, whether from embarrassment or excitement he was uncertain. "Irene? Look at me." He implored, reaching out to tip her chin down. "You're okay, it's okay."
She hesitantly put her arm down, biting her lip. "Nervous," was all she said.
"You want me to stop?" Arthur asked, hating the way she still looked surprised. "I will stop."
"No, I just...I'm not used to it being so…" Irene paused, clearly searching for the correct word. "Gentle."
Arthur groaned, "you're killin' me woman. Tell me if you ain't likin' what I'm doin'." He sank down between her legs, urging her up a little on the bedroll so he could lay on his belly. Jesus, he was lost. She was shaking under his touch, quivering just from his kisses on her inner thighs. Arthur continued to make soft noises in his throat, trying to keep her calm as he worked his way higher.
"A-Arthur?" Her voice broke, questioning. "Arthur, that's my-"
"Sure is." Arthur replied, already drunk on the clean, delicious scent of her. "I'm gonna' just...have a little taste."
He was slow, careful, like he was out stalking prey in the grasslands. Soft kisses that made their way relentlessly inward to his prize until finally, he parted her lower lips with his thumbs and lapped at the nectar that seeped forth. Irene flinched, obviously startled by his mouth on her, and her hands flew to his hair. Arthur waited for a beat, and then cautiously continued tonguing at her. "This--this cannot be proper, Mister Mor-gan--" Irene tried to reason, her voice gone reedy. "What if-"
"You just washed yourself, ma'am." Arthur drawled from between her thighs, rubbing his stubbled cheek against the inside of her leg teasingly. "Ain't nothin' else that concerns me if you're likin' it."
"I...oh, Lord, I can't think." Was her shaky response. "Wh-What are you doing to me, Arthur?"
"Showin' you how the worst outlaw this side of Saint Denis pleases a woman." He growled, the words hanging heated and sharp as a knife in the air between them before he resumed the sweet toil of eating her out.
She whined high, her fingers kneading at his scalp making his eyes roll shut in satisfaction. "Ar-thur, I--oh, Jesus, Arthur!" Irene sobbed when he lashed her clit with his tongue, rolling over it again and again.
"That good, hmm?" Arthur asked rhetorically, smiling against her when all he got was a moan in reply. She was so damn hot on his tongue, her core soaked with desire just from his heavy petting. That she had never experienced pleasure with a man was asinine, and Arthur privately vowed to give her everything that he could. Fastening his lips down over her clit, he swept his tongue back and forth in a tick-tocking motion that made her nails dig into his scalp.
That's not just something they put in the books so women don't decide to never get bedded?
"Gotta' admit," Arthur said, pulling away for a moment. "I'm a little curious about those books you been readin' if women are gettin' bedded in 'em." He continued with a teasing grin, full-blown laughing when Irene covered her face and shook her head, groaning. "What, no recommendations for me, Miss Irene? I enjoy a good piece of literature as much as the next feller!"
"You are cruelty incarnate, Arthur Morgan." She huffed.
Arthur relented, delving back into her with his fingers and tongue as an apology. He assumed from the half-stifled whimpers of don't stop that he was forgiven his transgressions. "You taste so damn good." He muttered, rumbling in approval when her hips rocked upwards and filled his greedy mouth with her cunt. "So damn good, wanna' get every last drop of this treat."
"A-Arthur--" she panted, "I feel...oh God, I…"
Her cunt pulsed under his touch and Arthur stroked his thumb gently over her slit as she came apart for him, every contraction making her slick folds twitch. "There we go," he soothed while she bucked and trembled. "There we go. Nice and easy, Miss Irene." He felt an odd sense of triumph, like when he managed to pick a troublesome stone out of the divot of Chase's frog. Androcles didn't have quite the same ring as Arthur, however.
Irene's chest was rising and falling rapidly, the woman still gasping for air. Arthur was unprepared for when she seized the front of his shirt and pressed her mouth to his own, whimpering even as she licked at his tongue. Arthur exhaled hard, wrapping his arms around her and kissing her back. Probably more roughly than he should have.
"You okay?" He panted, his nose brushing her own when he reluctantly pulled back an inch or so.
"Yes, God yes." She sighed, embracing him and giving him a dazed, oddly grateful smile. "Are you...I-I mean, would you like to…" Irene tried to ask, that sweet blush making its way down to her shoulders.
Arthur cupped her breast again, rolling over the tight little peak with his thumb. "'Would I like to'...what?" He questioned playfully. "Use those pretty words of yours, Irene."
"I'm scared." She told him honestly, her breath hitching at his touches. "I...it's unbecoming to be so wanton-"
"Honest, Irene. The word you're lookin' for is honest. Ain't nothin' wrong with knowin' what you want." Arthur hurried to interject. "The only sin is helpin' yourself to what ain't freely given."
"Arthur…" she trailed off, staring at him like she had never seen him before.
He cleared his throat after a minute. "Yeah?"
"I...thank you, Arthur. I wouldn't have--thank you for saying that." Irene laughed, "suppose now you're the one saying what I need to hear."
"I s'pose so." Arthur agreed, grimacing when a flash of lightning lit up the tent. Thunder rolled after a time, the storm still a ways away. His hands moved to the buttons on his shirt, easing them open one by one. Irene had herself propped up on her elbows again, and Arthur wouldn't say her expression didn't do wonders for his ego. "You'll catch flies if you don't close your mouth, Miss Irene."
She snapped her mouth shut, turning her head away with a nervous giggle. "Sorry! I-I apologize, I know staring is rude."
"Flattery will get you everywhere, Irene." Arthur said softly, his hands falling into his lap after he shrugged free of his shirt. He saw her eyes dart over towards him, the woman clearly trying to be more surreptitious about her peeping. "Ma'am, you are buckass on my bedroll. You're more than welcome to look." He drawled, his words laced with a confidence he didn't exactly feel. He knew what he looked like.
Irene covered her eyes, and then peeked through her fingers at him. "Are...are you certain?" Instead of replying verbally, Arthur just began unbuttoning his placket. "Arthur, I...oh." She mumbled as he shoved his pants off of his hips and down his legs, freeing up his cock. "Oh, Lord." Her hand actually moved like she wanted to touch him, but she flinched back.
Arthur groaned low in his throat, pleasantly warmed by her reaction. It had been far too long since he had indulged himself, and even longer since he'd had such lovely company while doing so. "You can touch me, y'know." He offered, and her hand crept forward again.
"It...I won't hurt you?" Irene asked worriedly, her fingers hovering in midair just above his turgid cock. The damn thing was already slick with pre-spend, droplets continuing to leak forth as though his whole body was just waiting for her to be brave.
"Touch gentle-like." Arthur instructed, gritting his teeth when she circled the head of his dick with the pad of her index finger. "Jesus Mary n' Joseph-" he cursed under his breath, the sensation of her fondling him like the lightning outside had leaped into his blood. Then, "your husband didn't let you touch him?"
"I was told to be still and quiet for him." Irene replied absently, her attention blatantly elsewhere as she drew her finger up and down the side of his cock. "He didn't last long. I assume he feared if I touched him, his fuse might shorten even further."
Arthur tried to stifle his snort of laughter to no avail, waving off the inquisitive look she gave him. "Sorry, sorry. I'm just...I ain't really surprised, is all." He quipped, feeling more than a bit smug. He choked on his next breath when she wrapped her fingers around his cock, the woman seeming to gauge the weight of him in her palm.
"It's not nearly so terrifying when I can see it." Irene remarked bluntly, trailing her thumb over the sensitive head.
Arthur grunted, catching her wrist. "Easy now, Irene. I'll freely admit eatin' you out mighta' shortened my own fuse, don't take it personal." He pressed another kiss to the inside of her wrist, nipping at the tender skin there and hearing her gasp softly. "I'd like to bed you very, very much, Miss Irene." He breathed. "Show you how it ought to be."
"I…" Irene hesitated, the pattering of the rain and the encroaching thunder the only sound in the tent for a moment. "It won't hurt?"
"I hope not. But if it does, you tell me an' I'll stop." Arthur murmured, framing her face with his large hands so she couldn't hide from him. "I swear it, Irene. I ain't gonna' hurt you if I can help it." He promised fervently. "Not that kinda' man, okay?"
"I know you're not." Strong words. Brave, considering her history, her lack of knowledge about his past and her current vulnerable state. "Oh, but…" she paused, then carried on stiffly, "Arthur, if I get pregnant-"
"T-There's...ways to prevent that." He should have...it wasn't impossible to get ahold of condoms, in spite of the advertising restrictions. He felt like an idiot. "I don't have...I mean, I'll be careful." Lord, since when did he talk about this so openly? Lightning flashed like punctuation on his sentence. Irene looked pensive, her eyes wide in the dim light, but Arthur would have sworn he saw relief there.
"I know there are more ways than one. My father was a doctor," was her even reply. "Please do what you can. I'm sorry I'm not more prepared."
"Irene…" Arthur was at a loss, cradling her head to his chest. "You trust me?" He asked for the second time that day, his voice a hard rasp.
"Yes."
No hesitation. Arthur closed his eyes, warring with himself. Nothing that he knew about was foolproof. But nothing that her father could have known about was foolproof either, aside from abstaining altogether. Things could fail.
They would be careful, he assured himself. "Okay." He croaked out, trying for a smile. "Lay down with me."
Irene obliged without question, seeming a bit confused when he had her straddle his hips. Arthur pulled her to his chest for a slow, sloppy kiss, feeling his cock slide against her wet little cunt when he rolled his hips upwards. Irene gasped out his name, her hands clutching helplessly at the bedroll beneath them. "A-Arthur!"
"Yes, Irene?" The man drawled against the shell of her ear, smirking into her skin as she whined.
"Th-This is--"
"Different, I know. Maybe considered unseemly. But I want you as close as I can get you, Irene. And…" Arthur paused, burying his face in the curve of her throat. "Want you to be able to get away from me if you need to, okay?" He explained softly. "Ain't gonna' hurt my feelin's, I promise."
Her exhale was a sharp little thing, as though she had just been pricked by a thorn. "You won't make me stay?"
"Not if you don't want to, no." Arthur answered firmly, taking no offense to her query. "You say stop, I stop." As much as he hated to admit it, this wasn't exactly his first rodeo with someone like Irene. People like him tended to be...heavy-handed, so a little caution and consideration went miles.
She kissed him hard then, making Arthur groan into her mouth when she wrapped her fingers around his cock and stroked him between their bodies. He knew he must have throbbed in her grip, because she tightened her hold momentarily in response. "I'm...going to put this inside me now." Irene announced, a little awkwardly.
Arthur chuckled, the noise quickly dissolving into a gasp as she shifted her weight and the head of his cock pushed past her slick folds, Christ she was hot-
The man tangled his fists into the bedroll so he didn't grab onto her and rut upwards like he instinctively wanted to do, his breath coming in harsh, raspy pants as she slowly worked herself down on his cock. "Mary mother of-" Her little sighs and moans had Arthur gritting his teeth to the point that his jaw ached. "You alright?" He managed to ask, daring to raise his hands to rest on her thighs.
"Yes." Irene breathed, the smile on her face a moment later looking like sheer bliss. Arthur was a goner.
"You sure?" He had to verify, his hands traveling upwards to cup her face. "Feels good for me no matter what, you know that. Need it to be good for you, too."
Her eyes opened and she looked down at him, stealing the breath out of his chest as she threaded her fingers into his hair. "It's already good. Now make it better."
…
"So what will you do now?" Arthur asked sleepily, nuzzling his nose into her tousled curls. The rain pattering on the canvas of the tent was lulling him into a doze. The air had cooled considerably in the wake of the storm. thank the Lord for small favors.
Irene's sigh gusted across his collarbone. "Not certain. I never dreamed to think about what would happen if I was truly free. Ever since I found out about him being dead, I've...I'm not sure how to explain it. There is relief, of course, but also a type of dread. I have grown used to this nomadic lifestyle. I have grown used to not being tied down by civilization."
"You sure 'bout that?" Arthur chuckled, "you still talk like you're sittin' in a parlor enjoyin' tea with the high society."
"Oh, you and I both know that you catch more flies with honey, Mister Arthur." He felt her smile against his chest, "I...there was a sort of interlude to this life that I found enjoyable when I believed I was still hiding. A simplicity. I knew I could not settle anywhere with other folk, not for very long anyway, as it would make it more and more difficult to hide who I was. So I did not want to settle anywhere." She hummed, stretching languidly against his side.
Arthur rumbled, his hands wandering over her deliciously-naked body. "You still feel that way, Irene?"
"I don't want to go back." She murmured. "There's nothing there for me anymore. Yet I don't think I truly belong anywhere just yet."
"How about with me?" Arthur offered quietly, tilting her chin up so he could cover her throat with kisses. He rolled onto his side and pulled her back to his chest, continuing to nudge his nose against the side of her jaw until she giggled that he was tickling her. "You could come join the gang." Bold words, he realized a little too late. "I'm sure the other gals would love you, and Dutch-"
Irene shook her head and Arthur fell silent, burying his face in her curls to inhale her scent with a sort of forlorn resignation. "It's very kind of you to offer, Mister Arthur, but I'm afraid foisting myself upon an already established group would be a recipe for disaster. In a way, I am still uncertain of my identity. Despite my age, I have never really...been myself. I have always been something else, had some role strapped to my back. Now that I've truly shed it, I'll need time to settle into being who I ought to be." She threw him a smile over her shoulder. "Whether Frank, Irene, or some amalgamation of the two, I am uncertain. But I do know this: I am glad to have met you, Arthur Morgan. For you helped me banish the burden of fear that bowed my shoulders so readily. I thank you from the bottom of my heart."
Arthur was silent for a time, mulling everything over. "Suppose I'd better make the most of this then, huh?" He asked finally, gesturing upwards at the roof of the tent. "Don't sound like that rain is plannin' on stoppin' anytime soon." His cock twitched against her rear, and he grunted when she shifted her weight.
"Like this?" Irene asked curiously, raising her leg and hooking it over the back of his thigh so his freshly-awakened cock could rub across her folds.
Arthur huffed out a breath, seizing her hip with one hand to keep her still. "You're playin' a dangerous game, woman." His voice grated a bit.
"You don't scare me, Arthur Morgan." She replied playfully.
Because you don't know who I am. If you did...maybe I would.
Arthur closed his eyes to ward off that dark thought, and in his moment of distraction her hand wrapped around his cock and she canted her hips back, guiding him inside her once again.
It was like finally coming home, a soothing balm for the spirit that had been forced to wander for so long. Arthur sheathed himself as deep as he dared, her breathy cries of his name more than enough praise to keep him warm in the no-doubt solitary months to come.
"Irene, Irene, you're beautiful." He clumsily complimented her, his lips pressed to her ear so she could hear whatever fool thing came out of his mouth. "God dammit, you are so beautiful. Perfect." His hands found her breasts, cupping and caressing them until she was writhing, bucking back against him in a manner that was downright wanton.
He loved it. The feeling of her around him, beside him, underneath his hands…
Arthur Morgan did not consider himself a good man. He did not consider himself a particularly smart man either. But right now, right now, he considered himself to be a remarkably lucky man.
"I'm close-" he choked, growling when Irene clenched down on him and keened to announce her own climax. Arthur nearly spent himself inside her, only just managing to pull out and spill his seed on her thigh instead. He snarled as he came, the sensation of his hand downright disappointing after being so deep in her. "Christ alive, Irene." He panted startled when she gently palmed his still hard cock and carefully urged it back inside her. "Easy, woman--"
"I just like the feeling, that's all." Irene assured him, shivering and arching her back against his chest as she moved into a downright luxurious stretch.
Arthur groaned, wrapping his arms around her to keep them pressed together. His hands rested at the apex of her thighs, and he stroked absently over the skin he found there. "I'd love to have stayed inside you, but I know neither of us are keen on bringin' a new young'un into the world." He tried to smile, tried to make it a joke.
"Maybe someday."
Irene's nonchalant, sleepy words hit Arthur like a punch to the gut. What was this woman doing to him? Arthur loathed himself for the way his heart hitched, ached at the idea of having a child. For the longest time in his younger years he had deluded himself into thinking that he might have something like that with Mary, dreaming about domesticity of all things. Going out and teaching little Jack how to fish had been torture, because all he could think about was John leaving the boy behind and Jesus Christ, how could a person ever do something like that?
"I think I'm gettin' a little too old." He admitted quietly. "Think the ship's sailed on that one. Plus, I mean, with the stuff I'm involved in…" he trailed off, tightening his hold ever so slightly. Irene yawned, snuggling down into his arms. He kissed her cheek. "Ah, don't mind me, Irene. I'll wake you up if anythin' happens."
She drifted off so quickly, leaving Arthur alone with his thoughts. He eventually pulled away from her, a hand on her back to keep her still, and he felt a ridge beneath his fingertips. Squinting in the dim light of the tent, he realized it was a scar. And it wasn't alone, her back was fairly riddled with them.
His stomach dropped in dismay. Arthur was not free of his own scars, of course. The ones on his chin were freely visible, and the rest of his body bore a fair amount of mileage to that end. He hadn't had an easy time of it. No one in the Van Der Linde gang had.
He untied the tent flap and propped it open after shuffling back into his pants, lighting the remains of his cigarette. The older man stared out at the rain for a good long while, his mind thousands of miles away as the cigarette slowly burned to ash between his lips. Tomorrow morning, perhaps the morning after that if he was fortunate enough to steal a bit more time, they would part ways once more, cast themselves adrift to the tides of fate.
He might never see her again.
After the weeks he had spent, wondering whether the phantom woman in the Valentine hotel had been nothing but a figment of his imagination...and now, knowing that she was real, flesh and blood...
Arthur lit another cigarette and reached for his satchel, tugging free his journal and then settling in to sketch her sleeping form. Here and now, in this secret clearing, he would eke out some semblance of peace. The graphite stub swept across the page, capturing forever the curve of her cheek, the glorious mess of that chestnut-brown hair, the wrinkles of the blanket that he had draped over her in case the breeze grew too ambitious.
Turns out the man I THOUGHT was Frank was actually -IRENE-. The world does so love to afflict me with its twists and turns...

Pros and Cons of all the TF shows I watched [updated: Unicron Trilogy and BW Neo]
Update info: Whyever the hell I wrote this and why people care about my opinion is beyond my current understanding, but @chaoticgirl23 asked for the Unicron Trilogy I hadn't watched back then, so- Also decided to write down if I actually like the show or not xD
(also I removed wfc, because I cant really judge after all with the show not being finished) My personal opinions + stuff that can be dubbed controversial and problematic, so beware for racism and sexism! But also beware of my idiotic attempts at humour
G1 (loved the show with all my heart)
Pros:
- The original show
- big cast of loveable characters
- Really awesome human side characters
- Very clever and witty dialogue
- fucking batshit insane
- Rodimus Prime is babe
Cons:
- apart from Arcee, female autobots being treated like a subspecies and only appearing in like one episode (3 if you are generous)
- Motherfucking country called “Carbombya”
- Some human characters are actually shit (those boys from B.O.T)
- Rodimus fucks as a human and not as a robot
- Everything animated by AKOM
- Galvatron’s portrayal as a person with brain-damage reads as ableistic (Personally I still love his G1 version more than the others I’ve seen)
- The “You’re only truly disabled if you lose your courage” line from Chip, it was explained to me that it’s ableistic as well
Headmasters (loved the show)
Pros:
- exciting plot
- characters die, fuck yeah
- Planets get destroyed, fuck yeah
- <3 ~ Power of Friendship ~ <3
- Sixshot is babe
Cons:
- Everything about Cyclonus and Wheelie
- Rodimus fucks off after episode 10 and never comes back
- Arcee going from warrior to secretary
- If you come from IDW I have to break it to you that Chromedome is straight
SuperGod Masterforce (loved the show with all my heart)
Pros:
- A darker and more serious storyline if you’re into that
- Lots of character arcs and well-written characters in general
- Decepticons having a more family like dynamic
- Decepticons with a level of depth to them
- Redemption much
- Ginrai is babe
Cons:
- This show’s focus is on the humans so if you don’t like human TF characters, this aint for you
- The character Cab has a level of racist stereotyping - he comes from a fictional country in Oceania called Karin and the depiction of that country is everyone living in wood homes and having no electricity. (The show plays in the future so that makes it worse) Cab himself gets introduced as a Tarzan kinda dude who can talk with animals.
While I found Cab himself not bad as a character, the problem with how his background is written sure is stupid and insulting. There isn’t a lot of focus on his country in the show however, but it’s still there
- There is a scene in which the boys Shuta and Cab spy on girls during swim class (they get called out and apologize for it though and the “fanservice” scene itself is really damn modest and tame)
Victory (loved the show)
Pros:
- Similiar fun tone as G1
- lovable cast of idiots
- Exciting episode plots
- Leozack is babe
Cons:
- The only two prominent female characters are love interests and nothing else (which is drop in quality when compared to Masterforce, which had Minerva as a fleshed out autobot with agency and Mega as an interesting female villain)
- Leozack never punches Deszaras in the face
- Fucking retcons the destruction of Mars in Headmasters
Beast Wars (loved with all my heart)
Pros:
- Really compelling story and characters!!!
- Well written dialogue
- Wonderful character animation
- Dinobot is HONOUR and babe. Also I’m crying
- Megatron and his bullshit
Cons:
- Megatron and his bullshit
- That stupid love triangle subplot in season 3
- Some major plotline not being fully developed (the Vok plotline)
Beast Wars II (liked the show)
Pros:
- The Predacons in general
- Lio Convoy (the Optimus of the show) having a son
- Galvatron is babe and so is Starscream
Cons:
- Maximals are lame apart from Lio Convoy and the arc with his son Lio Junior
- A lot of uninteresting characters an episodes
- The Jointrons as racist mexican stereotypes
- Only female robot is part of a love triangle (even more annoying than the love triangle in Beast Wars)
Beast Wars Neo (liked the show)
Pros:
- Big Convoy being a lone wolf turned teacher was a really sweet story to follow <3 How he and his team learnt to trust each other over the course of the show was really nice!
- Unicron in this show was a delight
- D-Navi was always fun
- Magmatron was a rather nice Decepticon leader
- Heinrad is babe
Cons:
- No girls (Boo!)
Beast Machines (very conflicted, tend to dislike)
Pros:
- Plays entirely on Cybertron
- Explores themes of technology and organic life forms and really tries to be something different and deep
- The last episode is really nice
- Jetstorm is babe
Cons:
- No fun allowed - the maximals are really frustrating because we only ever see them being angry and fighting and a lot of them only show us their worst sides
- The maximal character models are HIDEOUS
- You may not actually like the philosophical aspect of the show, especially when you think too long about it and realise it’s kinda shit
Robots in Disguise 2001/ Car Robots (liked the show)
Pros:
- New continuity! New story, new take!
- Funny and lighthearted
- Cute characters
- Sky-Byte/Gel-Shark is babe
- Ultra Magnus/God Magnus is a fucking jerk and I love it
Cons:
- Sideburn/Speedbreaker’s gag about loving red sport cars and chasing after them - it’s played as a joke all the time but I can see that stuff making people uncomfortable when they see the female driver trying to get away from him and his catcalling (Apart from that I do like him a lot though)
Armada/Micron Densetsu (disliked the show)
Pros:
- Lots of feels between Megatron and Optimus
- Starscream's arc
- The ending arc
- Jetfire was babe
Cons:
- The pacing was unbearable
- Half the time the characters didn't act like people and I was confused about almost every conflict, action and point they made. It's not a great story when I watch episode and need an hour to figure what the hell the story even was
- The parts I liked in concept are not helped by how unnatural and weird the characters acted at times. I liked the ending, but how they got there was so weird that I just can't enjoy it
Energon/Superlink (loved the show)
Pros:
- Megatron/Galvatron - Everything about him
- The japanese voice acting was fantastic!
- Really nice death scenes (I love death scenes btw)
- Mirage/Shockfleet being in love with Megatron
- Bringing back old names apart from Megatron and Optimus
- Rodimus being an equal to Optimus was a nice touch
- The few scenes it was 2D animated
- Jetfire/Skyfire is babe
Cons:
- Animation
- The "for the toys" thing kinda ruined some characters, where instead of getting the toys as completely new characters, they killed old ones and brought them back with a new model. It did suck story-telling wise (and me, loving death scenes, get annoyed when a death scene gets ruined by bringing the character back). So you got all these character arcs that feel like the just stopped
Cybertron/Galaxy Force (loved the show with all my heart)
Pros:
- Love the setting and world with all the different colonies and how they were explored ~
- Optimus Prime, this one is my favourite version of him!
- Vector Prime, they should bring him back
- All the different leaders
- The friendship between the characters- this show has my favourite set of Autobots from all TF media
- This also has my favourite Mega&Star dynamic
- Starscream himself is so well done here!
- Jetfire/Dreadlock was babe
Cons:
- Megatron was lacklustre. When it came to him and his dynamics with other characters (apart from Starscream), he was hardly written as a person with feelings. He never reacts to anything happening within the ranks of Decepticons and it is really disappointing, because there was a lot of potential! (with Flame Convoy and Chromia specifically)
Animated (loved the show)
Pros:
- Character writing, plot and themes!
- Lighthearted tone but enough scenes that dig a little deeper
- Really nice and smooth animation
- Optimus is baby
Cons:
- The chins
- No 4th season
Prime (loved the show)
Pros:
- Best friggin fight scenes and animation in general
- Really exciting plot
- Ratchet is babe
Cons:
- Predacon Rising exists
- Characters dying for budget reasons (Just don’t hire celebrities when you cannot pay them for more?)
Robots in Disguise 2015 (it's okay)
Pros:
- ...the Stunticons are babe
Cons:
- characters never developing and learning the same shit over and over again
- almost no interesting villains
- even the interesting ones being shoved aside a lot
- no real built-up for the climax
- lots of filler and not enough time spent on the actual plot of a corrupt Cybertron goverment
Prime Wars Trilogy (loved the show with all my heart)
Pros:
- Megatron, everything about him, he’s babe
- I really like the soundtrack
Cons:
- Bad storytelling, both narrative and visual
- Horrible or mediocre voice acting
- Static and bad facial expressions
- Static and bad character animation
- Feels like no one involved in the production had any idea how to tell a story
Cyberverse (meh)
Pros:
- Really cute as fuck
- Big cast
- Astrotrain is babe
Cons:
- No time for character arcs, they just jump from set up to conclusion with nothing in-between
- Unfocused plot that jumps from one idea to another
- Megatron broke my heart and I hate him

Blackout
I am SO sorry this took me so long! With everything going on with me, writing was kind of a struggle, but I had so much fun writing this one. Reader is wild. We love reader. This fic was inspired by all the songs I used to listen to while getting ready to go out in college which include: Blackout by Breathe Carolina, Wild Boy by MGK, Wild for the Night by A$AP Rocky, and Trashwang by Tyler, The Creator so if you wanna get in the mood, I’d put those on.
Warnings: Alcohol (a lot of it), passing mentions of marijuana and nicotine, semi-mutual pining(?) and of course, Language. Also platonic Oikawa & Reader.
Word Count: 5.3k
There was no better feeling than being reunited with all of your best friends at university after a long summer filled with family vacations and a part time job to try to save money while you were away. It was the strange lull between summer and the start of classes that you looked forward to every year in which you still had time to socialize with everyone without the worry of your ever piling assignments or having to commute hours between cities—everyone was gathered in one place.
It was your favorite time of the year and there was no other feeling that could compare.
Not being so drunk that you had every bit of confidence that you could possibly muster pumping through your veins.
Not being so high that your body felt it was moving on it’s own.
Not even learning that the dude you’d been so in love with since the start of university is just as in love with you as you are with him.
But considering you had no idea what the last feeling felt like, you could only hope for the first two to come in at full force tonight.
Tonight was the party of the school year and it was the one thing you looked forward to in the brutal, lingering August days. At the moment, you were fresh out the shower with all of your inhibitions and leg hair down the drain, your hair wrapped in a towel turban as you slathered lotion over your already drying skin. Your speakers are blaring a myriad of different hip-hop artists in your room, drowning out the fact that your roommates were doing the exact same thing in their own spaces. The thought brought a smile to your face considering the almost clashing yet complementary personalities between you and your roommates.
Kiyoko was so incredibly blunt and straightforward. Yachi was so shy, even as she entered university with all of her own friends from Karasuno. Yukie, being the house mom of your apartment, and Kaori too—everyone knew what was happening tonight and everyone was doing their own ritual to get ready for a night they would most likely never remember. Regardless of how similar or how different you all were, this night warranted one communal ritual: roommate check.
As the five of you got ready, each of you would check each other’s make up, outfits, and shoes to make sure there was zero chance of being a social faux-pas. It was a strange, unspoken rule in the apartment that you all made sure each of you left the house being at optimal hotness, but it was an incredible confidence booster, especially if one of you were able to land a sexy, one night stand. It was the goal. Best friends don’t let each other leave the house looking less than their prime.
“What do we think ladies?” You could hear Kaori let herself into the hallway, prompting you to pause Lizzo and open your bedroom door. The ash brunette had her hair down and straight, framing her done up face nicely. Without too much face products on, the former Fukurodani manager allowed her freckles to show through the tinted moisturized, accenting it with a light dusting of blush. Her onyx eyes were left alone, save for winged liner sharp enough to stab any weak man that dared approach her and a few coats of mascara on her top and bottom lashes.
“Approve,” you and Yukie chimed simultaneously. From what you could tell, the other Tokyo native was still in the middle of doing her own make up.
“Looks good!” Yachi chirped, while Kiyoko gave a nod of approval with a soft smile on her supple lips before retreating to her and the former’s shared room. You did the same, carrying on with your own look, absentmindedly lip singing to whatever song popped up on your hype playlist. While you were excited, the music barreling into your ear drum was the only way to distract your thoughts from wandering while you focus on blending out your eyeshadow. That, and the two chimes that rang in rapid succession signaling a text, worked pretty well too.
Yaku: You’re coming tonight, right?!
A force of breath leaves your nostrils in laughter as you send a progress shot of your look. Yaku Morisuke was a very close friend you’d met through high school, in addition to being the Nekoma volleyball manager, and there was one thing that Yaku knew better than anyone. You didn’t wear false lashes for any reason unless you were trying to get it.
Yaku: I’ll take that as a yes.
You’re the last one to call your check with your roommates—a regular occurrence, really, considering you always took the longest to get ready. For good reason, of course. “Check!” You called out as your heels clacked against the hardwood of your apartment’s hallway. Sporting a heather grey cropped halter top and high-waisted black leather pants, the girls gave their approval with a bit of hesitation.
“Are you sure you want to wear heels?” Kiyoko asked for the third time as everyone packed a spare bag filled with extra clothes that you would put in Yaku’s room later. After the first year, the five of you started to come prepared. The beach bag that was used carried painkillers for impending headaches, two sets comfy clothes in the event some of you couldn’t quite make it home, swimsuits in case someone decided to go drunk swimming, and a spare set of party clothes. This was not your first rodeo, by any means. It was a stroke of luck that the five of you could share clothes as well and as often as you did.
“Don’t worry, they’re not that tall and they’re actually pretty comfy.” And you knew the bag was at capacity, not warranting the ability for you to bring spare shoes anyway.
“Then I think we’re ready to go!” Kaori jeers, elated to see everyone just as much as you were. Kiyoko leads the group, Yachi in tow with her, and Kaori is all but sprinting towards the house, leaving you and Yukie to head up the rear.
“You know,” the former Fukurodani manager sings in her humorous lilt, “Kuroo is going to lose his shit when he sees you.”
“I hope so.”
When it came to one of these mega parties, there was no such thing as being early or fashionably late. There couldn’t be when there was twenty people living in one house and, no, that was not an exaggeration. Supposedly that’s what happened when a bunch of college boys who all used to play volleyball together at some point in time attend the same university—they rent a mansion for the next four years. With dozens of people living under one roof, it was no surprise that the music was already wracking the foundation of the house even from the outside.
Without so much as a knock to the door, the five of you entered the house, immediately being bombarded with a joyous yell from the former Fukurodani captain and ace, Bokuto Koutarou. “Hey guys, the girls are here!” You always found it amusing that, for someone as popular as Bokuto, the five of you were dubbed as the girls. Which made sense considering all of you were club managers at some point or another. Of your old team, Yaku and Lev flock over immediately, the two of them wrapping and squeezing you into a tight hug. The three of you briefly exchanged greetings, questioning how the other’s summer was before silently asking Kiyoko for the beach bag that held your group’s spare belongings.
“Could one of you just stuff this in your room?” Though you hadn’t nominated anyone, you shoved the bag in Lev’s awaiting hands.
“You sleeping over?” He asks, peeking through the open top. Yaku rebukes him immediately, telling him it was rude to go through a woman’s bag.
“Nah, remember how bad I blacked out last year? I just wanted to make sure I brought extra stuff so I don’t have to steal one of your guys’ shirts agains.” The former libero shakes his head before covering his face with one hand.
“[name], please don’t make me look after you again tonight.” The sandy brunette pleads.
“I make no promises, Yaku.” You chirp before placing a chaste kiss on his cheek and entering the massive living room that had been cleared to act as a dance floor. By how many people greet you, you aren’t even sure if you know half the people in here at the moment. There are a few familiar faces of Karasuno alumni, you recognize the DJ as some kid in a class you had last year—he went to Aoba Johsai if you remembered correctly—and Yukie and Kaori are already on the dance floor with all eyes on them. They beckoned for you to join them, red solo cups already in their hands in the air.
“You’re going to want this,” you look up to see Bokuto who had temporarily abandoned his duty playing host to hand you your own drink. Cautiously, you take a sip as his gold eyes watched, waiting for the green light.
Sometimes, Bokuto tended to get carried away with the amount of alcohol he put in the punch. Thankfully, this was not one of those batches.
“Thanks, Bo!” Is all you call out before joining your two other Tokyo friends on the dance floor. From behind them, you can see other party goers honing in on them, completely oblivious to the men doing the same to you. For a moment, however brief it may be, none of it matters as you feel the pounding bass takeover your own heartbeat, squealing with your girls as remixes of old songs that piqued your nostalgia played over the sound system. You take another swig of your drink, already killing your first one of the early night, crinkling the plastic in your hand as you gently squeeze the empty cup so you don’t let go of it. You’re squeezing and squeezing subconsciously until it’s taken out of your hand, making you turn around swiftly because who the fuck—
“Need another?”
“Kuroo!” Before your brain can react and stop you, your arms are around the object of your affection’s neck in a tight embrace, you legs coming off the ground and your skintight leather pants sticking to the back of your knees. Still holding your cup, the old Nekoma captain grins down at you when you release him, gently nudging with his chin towards the direction of the kitchen. The two of you weave and wobble your way through the masses with you walking ahead of him, allowing Kuroo to appreciate the view of your backside. The way your top hit flattered your shoulders well, but the leather pants. The goddamn leather pants were just doing it for him. Joining others crowding around the twenty gallon cooler that Bokuto used to mix and house the alcohol for the night, Kuroo makes it a point to keep close to you.
“When did you show up?” The black-haired man asks as he ladles some liquid out into your cup, making sure to avoid ice cubes.
“Probably ten minutes ago,” you weren’t sure—time was a foreign concept at a party. The captain eyes you almost worriedly, knowing you had a tendency of pushing yourself well past your limits when it came to alcohol.
“And you’re already on your second,” Kuroo lets out a whistle, “better take it easy, princess. Don’t want a repeat of last year.”
“Jokes on you, I don’t even remember last year!” Unable to come up with a witty retort, the middle blocker rolls his eyes before knocking back the rest of the beer in his bottle and grabbing another one. He remembers. He remembers, and he wishes that he didn’t because he didn’t need another memory that contributed to you being the one that got away, despite how close you were.
It’s a little disorienting for you to see him this way, sometimes, so grown that he can down ale like it’s water when back in high school he would hound the team to ensure they were properly nurturing their bodies. It was disorienting to see someone you were once so close with grow right before your eyes. The thought softened your heart for a moment until you realized you were probably staring and you should probably stop before Kuroo thinks you’re weird. You chug half your drink the second the raven-haired man hands it to you, hoping the alcohol would ease your nerves. “What did Bokuto use?” You ask wearily, not tasting an ounce of a burn.
“Everclear, of course.” Oh. Well, fuck.
“Here’s to me dying tonight.” You hold your cup out towards Kuroo, waiting for him to touch his bottle to it. When he didn’t, and just looked at you thoroughly nonplussed, you shrugged before downing the rest of its contents.
“[name]...” his voice comes as a warning, even more so when you grab another helping for yourself and immediately bringing the rim to your lips.
“Honey, I’m here for a good time, not a long time.” Kuroo watches as you flee back towards the dance floor, rejoining Yukie and Kaori. He doesn’t miss the way your teeth shine in different colors from party lights as you grin. Or the way your firm grip on the cup is similar to that of your mission of getting plastered tonight—unyielding. He doesn’t miss that Seijoh fuck that’s honing in on you from behind. He doesn’t miss the way his hands are firmly planting themselves on your leather-clad hips and he certainly doesn’t miss that you don’t fight him off in the slightest.
Sucking on his teeth, Kuroo knocks back a full bottle of beer without skipping a beat before tossing the glass in the recycling bin and rummaging through his kitchen cupboards. There’s no way Bokuto used all nine—aha! He thinks to himself, finding a fifth of Everclear that was supposed to be used to replenish the jungle juice after it had been killed. Immediately, Kuroo pulls the fresh bottle to his lips, draining a decent amount of its contents into his system each time he sees this guy whispering in your ear. He doesn’t miss the way you’re smiling as he does so.
“It’s so nice to see you, [name]!” Contrary to popular belief and unpopular opinion, Oikawa Tōru isn’t that bad of a person. Sure, he had a big reputation on campus, but that never stopped the two of you from becoming friends. To be perfectly honest, it was a wonder the two of you weren’t friends sooner.
There was no other man in the known universe that matched your party energy because no man ever carried the desire to get as publicly obliterated as you and the former Fukurodani managers did. Unlike the other men that were enrolled at this university, Oikawa didn’t care to find some target of a hook up at parties—he’d rather do that sober, maybe take a girl out for a nice, ritzy dinner. Parties were for blacking out and hearing the crazy shit you did for the next three months and living with your name in infamy; that was your guys’ philosophy and you were sticking to it.
Because of this principle, Oikawa often uses you as a hook up repellent to deter unwanted attention and you do the same because there was only one person you ever wanted at these types of shindigs. One person that, regardless of the two of you knowing each other since the first year of high school, never seemed to want to be this kind of close to you. You tried to pretend that it didn’t hurt; that someone you knew for so long and that you unearthed your feelings for two years ago wouldn’t want to press his body to yours and claim his territory. In your mind, he was partially the reason you carried the mentality that you may as well just blackout and try to have fun. In a twisted way it worked, considering how bad you got last year.
And that person, after greeting you for a few minutes, always seemed to end up in hoards and swarms of women you didn’t know. Kuroo was always caught up doing his own thing at his own pace. It shouldn’t have bothered you, considering he was one of the hosts, but a small part of you that was full of envy just never could let it go. Which seemed to regularly bring you into the hands of Oikawa Tōru. “I missed you too, Oiks!” You tell over the pounding music. The brunette is laughing and smiling as offers cheers to you, taking a swig of whatever cheap beer he had in his cup.
You have no idea how long you’re dancing for—all you know that song after song is keeping you alive and the number of drinks a mystery. But after Oikawa returns with your cup replenished, the heat from the swarm of sweaty bodies in addition to the alcohol erasing your logic, you decide you need a break. Without saying anything, not that the former Seijoh captain would have been able to hear you anyway, you point in the direction of the patio just beyond the connected sliding door. When he shakes his head, you wriggle your way through the sweltering crowd before all but skipping out the sliding door, letting the mild summer night air cool down your skin.
Not surprisingly, Yaku is outside with a few others that preferred not to be swamped by the masses, including your other two roomates. Save for one very familiar face that you’d hadn’t even realized was here tonight. “Yamamoto!” You yell, immediately sprinting over to him to tackle him, accidentally knocking the lit cigarette betwixt his lips down to the concrete of the patio.
“[name]! You crazy son of bitch, I missed you!” Everyone is full laughters and smiles, sharing stories of their summers and reminiscing of the previous parties that occurred in this very same mansion. To some degree, you were thankful you weren’t the only person that got buck wild at these events. Two years ago, Oikawa, Hanamaki, and Matsukawa had shown up with bulk amounts of powdered Kool-aid mix and dumped it into the hot tub in an attempt to “dye the water red”. Or so they claimed. Apparently, Kool-aid and chlorine don’t mix well.
Needless to say, Yaku was pissed about it.
In that same year, Lev knocked over the famed cooler fifty gallon cooler that was once the home for Bokuto’s even more infamous jungle juice. Note to all future party holders, Hawaiian Punch stains all carpets, regardless of color, if there’s enough of it. Especially monsoons of it. Akaashi learned that the hard way when he was the one who had to make the phone call to get the hallway re-carpeted and the floorboards underneath had to be replaced as well due to moisture. Thank you, Hawaiian Punch. Which was why there was now always at least one person—Akaashi himself, due to the trauma from two years ago—who guards the smaller cooler with his life. Nobody is knocking that over ever again and if they do, he’ll send them an invoice in addition to slicing off their head.
Then there was your infamous blackout from last year. While you, obviously, remember nothing about it, Yaku made sure to recount every detail possible. The last thing you remember was chugging a bottle of Jägermeister.
You hate Jägermesiter.
According to Yaku, at some point you started taking cutlery out of the drawer in the kitchen and going into each of the rooms and hiding silverware in different spaces. Nothing was off limits—whether someone was in the middle of getting a blowjob or hiding forks in people’s shoes. You also had decided to try to climb on top of Lev’s shoulders so you could see what it was like to be tall. Try, in the sense that Lev was entirely unwilling and refused to crouch down for you, resulting in you falling off of him and ripping his shirt off to keep balance.
Yaku’s favorite moment, and that is entirely satirical, is when you started a fight with Bokuto. Not only had you thrown your few cigarette butts from social smoking that you had inherently participated into the punch to “claim your territory”, but he, Yaku, and Kuroo were so worried when they saw you reach to drink the contaminated jungle juice that the former Fukurodani captain had tried to take your cup from you and just have you sleep it off in Kuroo’s room. Which, in all fairness, you did. However, if you were going to go, you were going to go down swinging.
Literally.
As soon as the cup was out of your hand, Kuroo had to physically restrain you from punching Bokuto in the face as you screamed that you were one hundred percent sober. Unfortunately, Kuroo’s grip slipped, mostly due to your squirming and thrashing, and you had landed a solid blow on Bokuto’s cheek. Needless to say, the three boys had to all but detain you and leave you with a babysitter—a position that Kuroo ended up volunteering for.
You wished you could have remembered at least that part of it. Only Kuroo knows what and if anything happened between the two of you that night, but he refused to ever speak about that night.
Recalling last year’s events prompted Yaku to remind you one more time this evening, “I am not fucking babysitting you again tonight, [name].”
“Technically, Kuroo babysat me.” You jeer as you stick your tongue out at the former libero before smashing the remaining contents of your cup. After your last seven drinks, you were a solid level of drunk to the point of still being coherent, but the ground was definitely moving in ways it shouldn’t have been. “Speaking of which, where is my favorite rooster?”
“Oh he’s been in the pool for the last like hour.” From the patio, your head snaps over as if to confirm it. But seeing Kuroo, hunched over alone with a half full bottle of Henny in his hand while he sat at the steps leading him into the water was not how you pictured you’d find the former captain. Normally, he would surrounded with potential suitors hanging off his arms and cracking jokes just to see if he could get lucky for the night. Yet, everything in his body language screamed “leave me be!”
And yet, you were you.
“I’m gonna go join him—“
“Wait, [name],” Yaku grabs your wrist before you can flit off to his room to change into the swimsuit you had brought, “I really don’t think he wants company right now.”
“That’s when people most need it!” Managing to wriggle out of the libero’s grasp, you made your way inside, weaving and bobbing between the partygoers with an expertise that you shouldn’t have had in the moment thanks to how much you drank. Or maybe you didn’t actually have at all, considering you tripped up the stairs a couple times. Maybe heels weren’t the best idea, but you managed to make it to Lev and Yaku’s shared room—the third door on the left. Knocking just to be sure, you were greeted with a relatively tidy room and the beach bag Kiyoko had brought sitting on top of the libero’s neatly made bed.
After slipping into the two piece and grabbing the beach towel someone had thought to bring, you retraced your steps, barefoot this time thankfully, before popping out the back door and joining Kuroo on the steps. For a moment, he looks up at you and you can see him fully. His hair is hanging over his face, as per usual, but rather than covering his usual jovial hazel eyes, they’re masking something darker. Even in the dead August night with only soft porch and pool lights for exposure, you can see the murky storms brewing in his eyes from a single, sideways glance. “What, tired of being around everyone?” The captain slurs.
“Not particularly. But you seem to be.”
“The water feels nice,” is all he says before pulling the bottle of Hennessy to his lips and taking a large gulp before offering it to you. It’s a small offer of a white flag, but a genuine one that tells you he is allowing your presence and company. “So, where’s Oikawa?” You shrug at the question while taking no offense to it before taking a pull of your own.
“I dunno, I’m not his keeper.” A natural silence lulls over the two of you. After handing the bottle back to Kuroo, you take a few more tentative steps into the water so that it rests just above your chest, cooling your body from the heat of the alcohol that consumed you. “So, I get that it’s your party and you’ll sulk if you want to, but what’s eating at you?” You ask. As you’re speaking, your hands are moving about the chlorinated water, occasionally cupping the pristine liquid only to have it leave your fingers.
“Who says something’s bothering me?” Kuroo grits out. Not very well, you might add, as his slurs cause him to miss a couple vowels and consonants in his sentence. Judging by the fact that he’s drinking straight out of the bottle, Hennessy no less, you assumed he’s been hitting the sauce pretty hard. After all, Kuroo hated Henny almost as much as you hated Jäger. Turning to look back at him, you see the way he’s hunches over after bringing the half full bottle down to a quarter, resting his elbows on his knees.
“Kuroo, you think I don’t know you?” Your question was intended to come out as snarky, considering the long standing friendship between the two of you, yet swallowing down the infatuation you had been harboring for the last couple of years. However, seeing the way his shoulders were slumped and the defeat that crossed his downcast features—you didn’t have it in you to be mean to him.
“No, you don’t.” Comes the reply, one you weren’t expecting.
“Say sike right now,” you growl, “Kuroo, we have been friends for almost six fucking years—will you fucking put that down?!” You’re snapping now, the stomping of your feet muted by the water as you approach the captain and rip the almost empty bottle from his hands. Just so that he couldn’t keep hiding himself behind alcohol, you pour the remaining contents into your own mouth and toss the bottle into the nearby grass before you bring yourself to sit next to him with your knees touching his. “I have known you for—“
“Six fucking years, [name], I know.” The tone in his voice is suddenly clear. The slurs and disparity were now replaced with bitterness and acidity that rarely ever came from Kuroo. “For six fucking years, you’ve known me and yet you never once fucking looked at me.”
“Kuroo, I look at you all the—“
“No, you don’t,” his hazel eyes are lit with fire and intensity that reflected the anguish he felt inside. As much as he wanted to, the former captain couldn’t stop himself from saying the things that he’d sworn to secrecy for so long. “If you ever actually looked at me, you would see the way I looked at you.”
“Kuroo...”
“Why do you think I volunteered to watch over you last year after you fucking swung at my best friend?” The sheer burn of his words and the lava in his orbs is enough to make your heart stop. You swear that it actually did. “Why do you think I asked you to become the manager all those years ago? Or why I get so fucking pissed off that you show up here just to blackout? That you’re friends with Oikawa of all people?”
“Because you’re a good person?”
“Cause I’m in love with you, you moron!” Kuroo’s outburst is followed by him threading his fingers into his signature bed head, hiding the hot tears that he can’t stop from falling. He can’t help it—not when all of his composure was drained from every bottle he drank today. “[name], I literally held you and rocked you to sleep while you were puking your guts out over the side of my bed last year! Do you have any idea how hard it was not to confess while you were crying after punching Bo? How I finally got to hold you after six years but you don’t remember a single second of it?”
“Kuroo, I—“ but you don’t have anything to say. What can you say? You had no idea that any of that had ever taken place. And besides that, you felt that you were never worthy of his attention. You thought there was no possible way he actually returned the tiny embers of the crush you’d had on him for all these years, so there was never a reason to ask if anything had happened between the two of you that night. You didn’t have anything to say and the only thought that crossed your mind at the moment was to run from the situation—to leave him alone because clearly Kuroo wasn’t thinking straight. “I should leave.” You whisper.
“Wait, don’t go! Just...” a mangled sob leaves his chest and, for a moment, it’s sobering to watch him transition from being standoffish to angry to hurt, “why can’t you just look at me the way you look at him?” And suddenly, you’re overly aware of how convoluted your plan to use Oikawa as a hook up repellent was. How it worked out almost too well to the point where the one person you wanted thought you were out of reach.
“Kuroo, Oikawa and I aren’t dating, he’s known that I’ve had a crush on you since we started uni.”
It’s silent between the two of you.
It’s silent as Kuroo slowly turns to you as he relishes in the way your eyes boast sobriety and honesty—the way he knows you’re telling him the truth.
And then he’s laughing. Head tossed back and hands over his stomach in a way that is just so Kuroo as he guffaws with zero regard for his volume. There was just enough alcohol left in his system that he couldn’t bring himself to care, just enough for him to have zero inhibitions left. “So you’re telling me that I drank a bottle of Everclear, a bottle of Henny, and a twelve-pack to my self for no reason?”
“Kuroo, you may or may not have alcohol poisoning.” You deadpan in reply.
“Oh look who’s talking!” Once again, the man beside is you laughing and you’re happy that he’s slowly returning to his normal, joking self. But the uncomfortable silence rears its ugly head once again and the two of you are looking at each other. How long had the two of you been staring at one another? Since you’d drained the rest of the Hennessy or since either of you last had a drink?
How much of this conversation was born because of the alcohol? It seems the question was weighing heavily on each of you.
“Do you mean it, Kuroo?” You ask quietly.
“I love you more than I hate Henny.” A snort leaves your nostrils, but you don’t miss the genuine tone. You don’t miss the way his hazel orbs have softened or the way one of his hands reached over to hold yours. You don’t miss the way his taut skin over his cheekbones relaxes by the slightest millimeter or the way his tongue peeks out to wet his slightly chapped lips. You don’t miss the way he’s looking at you with love. “You know, you were the only person I asked to be the manager back in high school. It was the only excuse I had to talk to you at the time.”
“Oh no, drunk confessions,” you tease, squeezing his hand. “Speaking of drunk, do you think we’re gonna remember this conversation tomorrow?” Another bellow of laughter escapes Kuroo’s chest followed by him wrapping one arm around shoulder to bring you closer. He knew he would. No amount of alcohol could ever make him forget hearing the fact that you’d been just as smitten with him as he was with you. Well, maybe not as much, but it was a start.
“That depends. Are you planning on blacking out tonight?”
“Is that what it takes to sleep in your bed again?”
“Is that a confession I hear, babygirl?” The pet name goes straight from your ears and sends a chill down your spine and he knows it’s getting to you. He knows, and everything feels right. He’s told you he loves you and that he has for years. He knows there’s nothing stopping either of you anymore, and he knows that you’re only getting started.
“I’ll show you a confession.”

Let’s Review || Chapter 14
Peter Parker knew that his big sister would do anything for him to be safe and happy. She’d given up everything for him twice over already and would do it again in a heartbeat. And that’s why, when the criminal mastermind Tony Stark started inextricably following him around, he didn’t say a word. Because he knew without a doubt Penny would do whatever she had to if it meant keeping Peter safe. He had to protect her, just like she always protected him. He never considered what would happen if Stark decided both Parker siblings were worth taking. Never considered who else in Stark’s inner circle would agree. He just wanted to protect her and yet somehow, they both ended up with needles in their necks.

Bucky hadn’t been a good guy in a really long time. He’d done horrible, horrible things and the majority of the remorse he felt was how it all had impacted Steve. The blond had been so distraught when he first pulled Buck out of cryo, a shell of the man he’d been before. He recited information when asked, followed direction without question, never complained about anything. There were no memories, not of his happiness with Steve, not of his betrayal at the hands of Howard Stark, not of his murders. Steve had cried. He vividly remembered the tears and the feel of the taller man’s arms wrapped almost suffocatingly tight around him.
It was Steve who brought him back to himself, as much as he could be brought back. He wasn’t the same man that he once was, but Steve still loved him and that was all that mattered. And in all fairness, Steve himself wasn’t the same man either. The betrayal had hardened him, the ice had frozen his core and never quite thawed. He was still Stevie, still the golden retriever of a man, but his teeth were sharper and his snarl more vicious. There was a bite behind the bark now that hadn’t existed before.
Their development had taken place separately but they still fit together. Bucky and Steve were still two pieces of the same puzzle, they fit together so perfectly that changing the edges of one just caused the other to adapt and warp themselves.
Warped was a good word. Steve and Bucky were still Steven Grant Rogers, Captain America, and James Buchannan Barnes, Sergeant of the 107th, but they were warped. They were still them, but the ice had caused cracks in the surface and the debris had fallen away to reveal sharper, more dangerous edges.
As Bucky watched Penny walk several steps in front of him, he wondered what the Original Bucky would’ve thought. Buck had been a good kid, if a player, back in the day. He’d been respectful and kind, would never think to even look at a dame wrong. Was it dark to think he would of killed himself back then, if he knew what the future held?
“Where are we going?”
It was quiet, almost a whisper, their doll feeling the change in atmosphere and getting nervous. Her shoulders were raised up to her ears, arms wrapped around her torso.
"Come here doll," Bucky pulled her back slightly to walk next to him, tucking her under his flesh arm, "we're going to take care of you, don't worry."
"What do you mean?" Her voice shook and he could feel her tremble under his grasp, "why—"
"Hush babydoll."
The tremble increased to full out shaking as the elevator descended, Penny's eyelids fluttering slightly as she visibly tried to regain control of herself. Bucky's enhanced hearing meant he could hear her heart thundering in her chest and he passed Steve a steadying look. They would comfort her after, when she was desperate and seeking any sort of safety.
Getting Penny to crack was going to be a trial and he wished he was more reluctant to make it happen. Instead the idea was almost relieving; it was the first step in moving her along on the path to acceptance.
When the elevator came to a stop, he had to push her along down the corridor. Her little bare feet squeaked against the tile every few steps, heels dragging in an almost unconscious show of resistance. Poor thing didn't even know what was happening, just that she needed to be frightened. That something was coming.
"This way doll," he steered her into the observation room connected to Rumlow's temporary quarters, squeezing her shaking shoulders gently. The light was turned out, she couldn't see what was on the other side of the glass, but instinctively she knew it was horrible.
"You've been real bad today, precious," Steve told her softly as he stepped around them, deeper into the room, heading towards a control panel just in front of the mirror, "you know how we feel about consequences."
"You're an adult, you know better than to throw temper tantrums," Bucky adjusted his arms to wrap around her, pressing her tightly against his chest.
He brushed his nose against her cheekbone, eyes locked on the mirror in front of them. Penny couldn't see, but his vision was even better than Steve's and Bucky was fully aware of Rumlow watching them. The man was propped against a wall, stripped down to a dirty pair of jeans and beat to shit. His entire torso was a mottled mess, bruised in gruesome blacks and purples. His eyes were swollen, his lips split and his nose was broken and smashed to the side.
Rumlow could see Penny just fine if the dark look in his blood shot eyes was any indication. Bucky wondered what was going through the man's head, wondered if he was scared or angry.
A whine escaped Penny, a short, terrified noise ripped from her throat. Danger was suffocating the air, the sound of some kind of buzzer making her jump in Bucky's arms. Slowly, several dim lights began flickering on in the room on the other side of the glass, one by one illuminating the room.
He could tell the second Penny laid eyes on Rumlow, the second she registered who he was. Her body locked up in terror so violently it resembled rigor mortis, her muscles turning to stone beneath his hands. The only thing moving was the jumping of her pulse, throbbing at a startling pace under her flesh.
"Sometimes, it helps to have reminders," Bucky ran his hands up her sides under her shirt, “Of what happens when you’re naughty. Of what could happen if you’re naughty.”
“We promised we’d never hurt you baby and we’d never break that promise,” the blond pressed a button on the wall causing another buzzer to go off, followed by an air lock sound as a hidden door shifted out from beside the two way mirror.
The small cry of fear that came from Penny was heart wrenching, the way she pressed back against Bucky as the door slid open made his chest pound. He loved that she would try to find comfort in his presence. Somewhere in her brain, Penny knew that he would take care of her when she was in distress, when she was scared or in danger. It would’ve been nice to comfort her properly, but instead he forced her closer to the window while Steve stepped into the prison room and Buck shut the door behind him.
“We’d never hurt you, precious,” he repeated softly into her ear, one hand coming up to hold her chin firmly while the other stayed locked around her waist, “so we’ll hurt someone else instead.”
“What is this?” Bucky felt the goosebumps spread over her skin, felt her hair literally stand on end.
She remembered his voice. Bucky was sure she remembered the words he’d said that night, all of them. The taunts. He wondered if she recalled every sound he made while she couldn’t move, couldn’t shout for help. If she remembered the fear and the pain and the humiliation as vividly as he could imagine it.
And then Steve’s fist slammed into the man’s face with enough force that Bucky could practically feel it from the other room. A shudder ran through Penny’s entire body; the sound of pain Rumlow made was like a wounded animal, full of primal fear and desperation.
“Get off,” Penny gasped, pressing against Bucky’s hold as hard as she could, “get off me, oh God—”
Her entire body was primed to run, he could feel her muscles bunching under his hands, could hear her heart thundering in her chest. She wasn’t strong enough to force even a few inches of separation and he locked his arm tighter around her waist. He was careful not to dig his fingers into her chin too hard, not wanting to put bruises on her pretty face. Her punishment would be just as effective if she came out of it completely physically unharmed.
“Shh babydoll,” he crooned, brushing his lips over the shell of her ear, “you know, one of Stevie’s talents has always been interrogation. Getting information out of Nazis was easy, they were all pussy bastards. This future though, it’s harder. He’s always had some aggression issues and they got worse with the serum, but this helps him work through it productively. Well, not in this case. In this case he’s just going to cause as much pain in the next hour as he can without mortally wounding him. It took you just about an hour to destroy the kitchen, so we rounded up.”
“I-I don’t,” Penny hiccupped on her words, terror eating her up inside, “Please, p-please, I—”
She couldn’t finish her sentence before Steve bodily lifted Rumlow and tossed him against the wall with petrifying ease. A sharp cry escaped the man, a bone chilling wail as he hit the ground, leaving a distinct crack behind on the wall. Penny trembled against his chest, watching Steve grab Rumlow by the hair and drag him to his feet.
“He’s in a lot of pain, Penny doll,” Bucky whispered, caressing her jaw with his thumb delicately, “Stevie probably broke a couple of his ribs, if not several vertebrae.”
“Oh god,” her tone was a mix of a gasp and a retch.
“Now see, watch what he’s doing baby,” he murmured, directing her attention at the way Steve was examining Rumlow’s ribs with deft touches, “Rumlow’s had broken ribs before, might have some now right? So Stevie’s looking for the weak points. Oh, there he found one.”
An audible crack echoed in the room, followed by a scream. Penny flinched back against Bucky’s chest with a soft whine, he could see in the reflection that she’d squeezed her eyes shut. The thrill her terror sent through him would’ve made Original Bucky puke. He knew, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the excitement was not natural. There shouldn’t have been such an impatient undercurrent in his soul for her to start crying, for her to need his comfort even more.
Steve broke at least 5 ribs with deft, casual hits to Rumlow’s torso. Penny was just trembling in terror and Bucky hid his sigh as she pressed back against him. His eyes caught movement in his peripheral vision and he flicked his eyes up to see Steve gesturing to Penny. Her eyes were pressed closed while his hand continued to hold her face in place and he stroked his thumb gently over her jaw.
“Open your eyes, precious,” Steve’s voice was crystal clear through the microphone and they both knew she was aware of how much the blond enjoyed having to repeat himself when they immediately fluttered open.
“That’s a good girl, Penny,” Bucky moved the hand from her chin to stroke her hair back from where it fell on her forehead, “you don’t get to look away.”
Steve dropped Rumlow to his knees, receiving another agonized sound of pain from the man for his efforts along with a whine of fear from Penny. The blond was sure he’d think she was pretty in every situation ever, but she looked especially sweet in her terror; her cheeks were flushed, her dark eyes shiny and wide, her hair a wild mane. She was so precious, to be so upset over the pain of a man who hurt her so badly. Poor Penny, able to have empathy even for a man who’d damaged a piece of her soul.
“How longs’it been, Buck?”
“Just about half an hour,” the brunet glanced at the digital clock on the wall near the control panel before pressing his lips against Penny’s face again, “Breaking ribs takes a lot of care, you’ve gotta do it just right so they don’t puncture a lung or float. Hairline fractures are the most effective, but our strength makes it hard to only cause fractures. Stevie’s a real talented man, precious.”
“I-I’ve learned m-my lesson,” her voice was shaking, her teeth chattering, “please, I w-won’t do it again, I…”
“Shhh, precious,” Bucky ran one hand up her side again, gently stroking over her skin to offer just enough contact to prevent shock, “we said an hour, remember?”
A coughing hiccup was the only response, followed by a little sob. The tears were starting now, her consciousness pushing past the initial fight, flight, or freeze instinct and allowing for a full range of emotion. He could practically feel her desperation to make them happy, to make them stop the punishment early.
Steve drew his eyes away from the crying woman after just a moment, mind whirring with strategies; it wasn’t a full break, Penny was still in control of herself, he needed to up his game for the second half. He hummed quietly, refocusing on Rumlow’s pain with terrifying ease. The man wasn’t going to die today, but he might wish he had.
“Don’t look away, Penny,” the blond ordered as he reached down and grabbed Rumlow’s arm, manipulating his hand carefully, “you need to watch what you’ve caused if you’re going to learn from your mistakes.”
And then, he wrapped his hand around Rumlow’s pointer finger and twisted. The man shrieked as the tendons and ligaments were ripped, the sound increasing in volume when Steve didn’t stop twisting; the bones broke, the skin tore, and then Steve pulled. The finger came off with terrifying ease and Steve very casually shoved the digit into Rumlow’s mouth, covering it with his hand to keep him from spitting it out.
Bucky smiled when Penny fell forward over the arm around her waist and vomited all over the floor, her lunch returning to splash against the wall and their feet. She heaved several times, gagging and wailing in terror when Bucky gently manipulated her to stand upright again, pressing her front carefully against the glass.
“Didn’t Stevie tell you not to look away, precious?” Bucky was fully aware that she’d had no control over her movements, that she either aimed her puke at the ground or she would’ve projectile vomited all over the mirror, but the soft sob she made in response felt like a win.
She threw up twice more in the next ten minutes before going mostly catatonic in his arms; her eyes were still locked on the two men in the other room as she’d been instructed, but Bucky knew she wasn’t actually seeing anything anymore. The trauma was setting in, the shock too overwhelming for his steady touches to combat.
“That’s time, precious,” he told her gently, reaching out to knock against the glass to alert the blond it had been a full hour, “let’s go back upstairs.”
Steve would catch up; he’d need to bring someone in to treat Rumlow’s wounds to prevent him from bleeding out and then he had to wash up. Unlike Bucky, the blond thought with a fond twist of his lips, he avoided bringing bloodstained clothing into the apartment.
Bucky took Penny straight to the bedroom when the elevator stopped, stripping off her leggings and the t-shirt she’d been wearing. It was a testament to how far gone she was that she didn’t even react, just sat silently on the edge of the bed in nothing but a pair of little panties. Bucky had to reel in his libido; taking her while she was in such a state wouldn’t be conducive to building the relationship they were going for. He pulled the long sleeved henley he was wearing over his head and gently dressed her in it.
“Come ‘ere, babydoll,” he murmured, scooping her up into his arms and holding her close while he climbed into bed, pulling the comforter up over both of them, “JARVIS, lower the temperature in the room to 70 degrees and tell Stevie to grab one of the weighted blankets out of the closet before he comes in.”
“Yes Sergeant,” JARVIS sounded cold and a touch irritated, which in turn irritated Bucky; the AI was becoming a pain in his ass.
The technology in the tower was great. Bucky had always loved innovation and science, loved the idea of intelligent buildings and flying cars, but it was hindering his ability to fully ensnare Penny and that was a problem. The kind of problem he wouldn’t tolerate for much longer if JARVIS kept up with his current behavior.
Penny was uncommonly still where he lay on his chest. He’d expected shaking and crying, but instead she’d gone entirely blank. It wasn’t the first time, she had a tendency to retreat into herself whenever she became emotionally taxed, but he didn’t like it. He wanted her to break down, they needed her to crack but she kept reinforcing her foundations instead. She pulled away and stewed in her fear and anger instead of releasing the negative emotions.
“How’s she doing?” Steve questioned softly as he walked into the room, a blanket in his arms that he was quick to spread out over the bed.
Bucky hummed and looked down at where Penny’s head was rested on his chest, examining the blank look in her eyes, “not well.”
The blond rolled his neck, hand reaching back to squeeze the tense muscles, worrying quietly that they’d gone too far. Honestly, he wondered if maybe just the sight of Rumlow would’ve been enough to do the job, if the fear of knowing he was so close by would’ve been punishment enough.
“Poor thing,” he murmured, kicking off his shoes and nudging them under the edge of the bed before stripping off his clean shirt, “we’ll need to be extra sensitive for a while.”
Bucky made a noise of agreement, watching his boyfriend shuck the sweats he’d put on after the quick shower with pleasure. Steve was sex on legs and any amount of undressing was generally enough to get the brunet hard as a rock. The temptation to throw him onto the bed and fuck him senseless was strong, he wanted to lay the man on his back and rest Penny on his chest, tuck his knees as far up as they’d go and then plow him through the mattress. He could imagine the look on his lover’s face, the sight of Penny’s cute panties taunting him as he wrecked the blond beneath him.
He forced himself to drag his eyes away before Steve caught the expression on his face; now was, unfortunately, not the time. He tugged Penny a little higher up on his chest, carefully adjusting her head to rest in the crook of his shoulder.
"It'll come, Buck," Steve murmured, addressing the sadness in the brunet's eyes as he looked at their girl, "we gotta be patient."
"I don’t want to be patient. I want her to break," there was no reason to watch his words, Penny was nearly catatonic, "but she keeps doing this instead."
"You and I both know she can’t hold out forever, self-preservation will win out—”
“Captain, Ms. Maximoff urgently requests to see you. She is on her way in the elevator,” JARVIS interrupted, causing the blond to roll his neck in irritation.
Most likely, Wanda had gotten word of Penny’s impending punishment and was irate with them; like several of their companions, Wanda had become immediately protective of Penny and Peter even without meeting them. He pulled his sweats back on and flashed a quick I’ll be right back hand gesture to Bucky. The elevator arrived on their floor as he crossed the room, his enhanced hearing picking up the sound of the doors even through the soundproofed walls of their apartment.
Upon opening the door, he was immediately met by Wanda shoving two squirming furballs in his face, "pick one and take it to Penny."
Steve nearly fell back when she lifted the kittens threateningly towards him, bobbing the mewling little things intently. Both were light in color, one almost entirely white with spots of cream and the other with a white belly and legs and a pale orange on top. Each one was entirely too fluffy, with tails nearly the size of their little bodies. The mostly white one had ridiculously short legs and the other had fat chubby cheeks.
"Wanda—"
"Don't argue Steve! She needs a companion she doesn't hate! Especially after what you idiots just did to her!" The redhead was fuming, a slightly glow in her eyes warning him that he was edging on her very dangerous temper.
He heaved a sigh; maybe a cat would do Penny some good. He looked between the two critically. Both cats were unnecessarily cute. Their burden of adorableness was too heavy for such small creatures. They reminded him of Penny in that way—they were so small and precious and—shit.
Steve carefully took both kittens from Wanda, ignoring the victorious look on her face and turning back into the apartment without a word. He used his heel to shut the door on her before she could taunt him the way he could clearly see she wanted to. Two kittens would be a challenge but Penny needed something to keep her busy anyway.
She was still entirely out of it when he walked back into the bedroom, half lying on Buck's chest, but Bucky's eyes went wide immediately. The brunet's gaze was locked securely on the cats, not even twitching to his half dressed boyfriend for a second.
"Oh my God," he whispered, reverently and with so much feeling that Steve couldn't help but grin.
"Gifts from Wanda," he explained as he carefully climbed onto the bed, laying the kittens on the pair's stomachs.
"Oh my God," Bucky's voice was almost a whine as the chubby kitten stumbled across his chest, accidentally head butting him in the chin, "oh my God, Steve."
The white kitten made a squeaky meow before clawing her way up the Henley Penny was wearing coming to rest in the crook of her neck. It turned in place several times before snuggling down and beginning to purr like a tiny motorboat. It was loud enough that Penny startled, her eyes regaining focus as she tilted her head down.
"Oh my God." Steve knew he had a type but the uniform reactions from his lovers just reaffirmed the knowledge.
"Its cute, huh?" He reached over to scratch its neck, enjoying the way that Penny didn't even flinch at the proximity.
Then, she burst into tears. Massive, heaving sobs that shook her entire body. The kitten let out another squeaky toy like meow before crawling onto Penny's chest, settling between her breasts and purring even louder.
Bucky's eyes snapped to Steve's immediately, a very clear What the Fuck expression on his face. The blond mostly ignored him, instead settling himself on his side as close to Penny as possible, one arm going around her waist while the other slipped under her pillow. The emotional outburst was welcome no matter the cause.
"That's good baby," he murmured quietly, brushing his nose against her cheek, "you're okay, let it out."
Penny's arms came up to wrap around the kitten, just barely managing not to squeeze it too tightly. The reaction led to Bucky quickly depositing the other kitten onto her stomach.
"Look doll, here's another," he cooed stealing one of her hands to run it over the chubby cheeked cat.
Some sort of sobbed sentence escaped her, entirely incomprehensible to either of the soldiers, and she tugged the second kitten up her chest to lay next to the white one. It took nearly an hour for her to calm down, the exhaustion of the day settling over her shoulders.
When her eyes started fluttering shut, Steve carefully scooped the orange kitten off her chest and handed it to Bucky. Before he could take the white one Penny startled awake, almost violently.
"No please!" The kitten made a distressed noise when the brunette abruptly clutched it to her chest, tears once again spilling from her eyes, "please don't take them, please! I'll be good please, let me keep them please!"
“Shhh, precious, I’m just going to put them in a drawer to sleep for the night, until we can get them beds,” Steve cooed.
“C-Can’t they stay,” she begged, dark eyes shining beneath her heavy eyelashes, “please, can’t t-they sleep in the bed?”
Steve passed Bucky a speculating look, to which the brunet just shrugged. He heaved a quiet sigh, knowing his boyfriend was as far gone on the kittens as Penny was, before nodding and settling back into his position at her side. Bucky placed the orange kitten back on Penny’s chest, watching both of the kittens amble around for a few seconds before curling into each other and falling back asleep.
“We’ll need to buy everything for them in the morning,” Steve murmured quietly over Penny’s head, watching Bucky curl his flesh fingers gently into Penny’s hair.
“And get Wanda a thank you gift,” the brunet added with a definitive nod.
“Yeah, and that.”

My Review of Banana Fish
How did I get into this anime? Well…I heard some things about it.
*potentially gay boys*
Yeah. That! I heard and immediately added it.
Guys, you could have told me other things to get me into this anime. I would have added it right away if someone had told me the first episode had the feeling of a Black Lagoon episode. Oh well, 2020 is better than never to watch Banana Fish.
Aslan Jade Callenreese (a.k.a. Ash Lynx) is the head of a street gang at the young age of 17. He’s been somewhat under the supervision of a mafia don by the name of Papa Dino. However, this relationship between Papa Dino and Ash is going to get strained when Ash steps into some territory involving an illegal substance. While out one night, Ash came across a dying man muttering the words “Banana Fish” and it struck a cord. Ash’s older brother Griffith came home from the Iraq War where all he could say is “Banana Fish” and not much else. Is there a correlation between these two men? Was Banana Fish the name of a drug that caused this much damage to Griffith’s brain? As we’re going to learn later on in the series, yes and then some!
Meanwhile, we’ve got a crew from Japan writing an article about street gangs in the U.S. Among the crew is a 19 year old college student named Eiji Okumura. He ends up getting caught up in Ash’s life when he was kidnapped in episode 1. And after that, Eiji has been either an asset or a damsel in distress. It depends on which episode you watch! So let’s take a look at this intriguing story involving drugs, murder, and mafia dons.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: By the looks of things, Amazon Prime is the only one that is streaming this anime. So I don’t expect an English dub for this any time soon. The Japanese cast is filled with a lot of folks I’m familiar with and folks I can recognize the moment they speak like Jun Fukuyama, Rie Kugimiya, and Yoshimasu Hosoya. Hosoya can play all the awesome buff guys he wants, but to me all I hear is that wannabe gangster from Durarara. And then you have Unshou Ishizuka! Shit, this started to air right around the time Ishizuka passed away in 2018. That means he was not only recording this series while doing cancer treatments, but also working on Jojo’s and Pokemon. Dude is legend! Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
*Ash is played by Yuuma Uchida (known for Kyo on Fruits Basket 2019, Uenoyama on Given, Ginshi on Tokyo Ghoul :re, Chika on Kono Oto Tomare, Eiji on UtaPri, and Kitahara on Grand Blue)
*Eiji is played by Kenji Nojima (known for Khoury on Pokemon DP, Mamoru on Sailor Moon Crystal, Natsuya on Free!, Tomoya on Clannad Movie, Kiba on High School DxD, Ginoza on Psycho Pass)
SHIPPING: Hey, is that a banana in your pocket or are you just happy to see him?
Yeah, hi! I’m Medea and I’m addicted to this ship. Don’t fight me on it and don’t ruin it for me. This makes me happy. Ash can truly be happy when he’s around Eiji. I know that’s a clear sign of weakness in the gang world. But if Ash went to Japan with Eiji, this could have been a true happy ending.
Thanks again internet spoilers, I could have done without hearing about this sad ending.
I know the kiss in the prison was just to give Eiji more information without anyone knowing anything and we didn’t get another kiss from the two after that, so there’s that. But these boys certainly had one hell of an adventure together. And during the times they were living together, it really felt like they were in fact a married couple. Their bickering almost reminded me of Usagi and Misaki from Junjou Romantica in a sense. But these guys were a lot more civil considering one of them carries weapons of every variety. Both boys went through a lot just to save the other person. There was even a sweet scene where Ash was literally at a breaking point and Eiji just ran up and hugged him. Love it! Love everything about it!
And now I would like to talk about Yut-Lung. He’s quite fascinated with Ash and Eiji to a point where he really wants Eiji dead. In fact, this character went out of his way to make Ash’s life a living hell ever since he met him. Some of the biggest moments worth mentioning are having Eiji kidnapped and raped. And drugging Ash’s best friend Shorter with the Banana Fish drug and watch as either Ash or Eiji kill him before Shorter kills them. Near the end of the series, one of Ash’s former teachers named Blanca thinks Yut-Lung has no love and has no experience in the matter. All Yut-Lung has is vengeance and that’s that. So was Yut-Lung jealous about what Ash and Eiji had? Quite possibly! All he knows was trying to take down his older brothers by killing them or drugging them with the Banana Fish and after that, he’s just a blubbering drunk.
Sooo…is he and Sing going to hook-up or what?
I don’t know, I sensed something between the two aside from the fact both boys are Chinese.
ENDING: First I would like to talk about the Banana Fish. This is a special kind of drug. Once it is injected into the subject, you tell that person to do something and they will do it. It’s just that the after effect has them in an almost comatose state. In the case of Ash’s brother Griffith, he was drugged with Banana Fish and was told to kill his fellow comrades in the war. Papa Dino had plans involving the U.S. government and even the streets of NY. It’s just that Ash caught on early and has been a constant thorn in his side.
Near the end of the series, things get hairier for Ash when one of the men who taught him how to fight (Blanca) emerges after many years and is now working for Papa Dino and Yut-Lung. This entrance set up many things for Ash to deal with. Ash would do nearly anything to keep Eiji alive and out of harm’s way. But he ended up giving all of his data about the Banana Fish drug to his enemies, return what he stole, and go back to Papa Dino as his boy-toy prostitute. And let’s say this month living under Papa Dino’s control was pure hell for Ash as he was literally Papa Dino’s bitch! But Ash fought back by starving himself. That still didn’t stop the mafia don as he drugs him and props him up like a dope-fiend everywhere he goes. But he doesn’t kill Ash, he has plans of formally adopting him as his own son.
Thankfully, Ash was saved by a sneak attack from his allies in the gang world like Cain and Sing. But Ash still isn’t out of the clear. Papa Dino still wants him back. Yut-Lung still wants Eiji’s head on a pike. Some of the members of Sing’s gang don’t trust Ash and think he was the reason behind Shorter’s death and now some of those members are going behind Sing’s back to collaborate with Yut-Lung. And what do they do? Shoot Eiji while he’s with Ash to prevent Ash from catching on (since he’s so dormant around Eiji). Thankfully, Eiji survives being shot (again). Oh but Ash here is super fucked at this stand-point.
Right now, many of Ash’s crew has been taken in by this new, last-minute bad guy that came from nowhere thanks to Papa Dino and they’re about to be experimented on or dissected. I am not even going to bother learning this dude’s name and I’m just going to refer to him as “last-minute bad guy” because that’s what he is. Okay?! Ash just overkilled the guys who attempted to assassinate Eiji and some of Sing’s men despise Ash even more than they already did. And because of this new bad guy, Ash has a good chance of dying or going to jail. After saying goodbye to Eiji in the hospital, Ash hooks up with Blanca and the rest of his remaining crew to shoot and take Papa Dino hostage. That did not go over well. Last-minute bad guy shot Papa Dino making the hostage situation awkward.
During this siege, Sing, Cain, Blanca and the rest were able to save their captured comrades. Ash was able to take advantage of the situation and at one point knocking out the last-minute bad guy with a power drill to some vital organs. Unfortunately, this guy still won’t die and was almost ready to kill Sing. But in the very last minute, Papa Dino shoots last-minute bad guy…and then falls off the building into a firey pit below. You know, the Frollo method. So both last-minute bad guy and Papa Dino are dead.
That’s good!
But the contents involving the Banana Fish drug that Ash almost got his hands on, ended up falling off the building into a firey pit below!
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
So we end the series off positively with Blanca heading off, Max Lobo and his estranged girlfriend getting married, the government asking some hard questions for all the shady shit happening these last 24 episodes, Yut-Lung sobering up to give Sing the business, and Eiji being discharged from the hospital. However, Eiji is going back to Japan. But he leaves Ash a letter and an airplane ticket to Japan. Ash was running when he is confronted by Lao (the disgruntled member of Sing’s gang) and is stabbed. Ash kills Lao and heads back to the library, bleeding, and continues to read Eiji’s letter. We end with a woman trying to wake Ash up but then walks away…
YOU CRAZY BITCH, GET HIM TO A HOSPITAL! DON’T JUST SAY HE’S DREAMING, GET A DOCTOR!
Okay, I really liked this anime. In a way, it reminded me of Black Lagoon. Only with more penises! But I do have to wonder if this story would have done better in Black Lagoon’s setting of Roanapur instead of New York City. It feels as though NYC has authorities, but they’re essentially useless if no one really gets sent to jail when one of them kills another. But in Roanapur in Black Lagoon, anything goes. Then again, the crime syndicate in Banana Fish is pretty huge that it would be hard for any proper authorities can nail anyone. There are webs of gangs, mafias, and male prostitution.
I really enjoyed the chemistry between Ash and Eiji. I know it wasn’t like full-blown yaoi like I was anticipating. I mean, this was done by Studio MAPPA and after Yuri on Ice, I’m quite impatient for some BL kisses. But what I was given, it wasn’t disappointing. Ash has pretty much spent his adolescence tossed around like a prostitute rag doll (for a lack of a better term). On top of that, the life as a gang leader is a pit of dangerousness. So Eiji was his first friend that didn’t treat him like a gang leader or a piece of ass that needs to be tamed (for a lack of a better term). Eiji came to NY with his friend to do a story about street gangs in America. He came from a rather normal family and had a normal upbringing. Total polar opposite to what Ash has had to overcome! But watching them interact with each other in this series was worth the ride. And I will forever hate Lao for killing Ash. Ash could have gone to Japan. He and Eiji could have had a happily ever after. But no! Fuck Lao! Oh, if you want a captivating friendship revolved around a world of gangs and drugs, check out Banana Fish.
If you would like to watch Banana Fish, all 24 episodes are available to watch on Amazon Prime.
Okay, now that this tale is over let’s pick up a new anime. What is my next anime from Amazon, Crunchyroll, or Netflix?
What in the District 9 piss is this shit?

Enough folks recommended Puella Magi Madoka Magica to me that I finally got around to watching it. I tend to hate first episodes, but let me tell you, I knew right away that this show was for me, and it took all my self-control not to immediately binge the other eleven episodes on the spot.
(The title is long and kinda annoying - it's "Magical Schoolgirl Madoka” in Latin because... it just is? I got nothing.)
My first thought was, Wow, this is so good, why didn't I know about it back in 2005-2009 when I was watching a lot of anime? And the answer is that it came out in 2011 when I was more or less off-grid for several years, and so I completely missed it when it was first out, and I haven't watched much anime since.
Anyway, PMMM is a deconstruction of the classic magical girl (mahou shoujo) genre, sort of like Princess Tutu or Revolutionary Girl Utena, except even darker and more brutal (Utena is pretty damn brutal but the violence is more subtle, with less on-screen blood and death than in PMMM). It reminds me the most of Bokurano, which does a similar deconstruction of mecha shows--both are ensemble pieces where a lot is happening under the surface and making uninformed contracts with alien entities with questionable motives is a terrible idea.
It's really hard to talk about PMMM without spoilers, but I think I can safely say the show initially disguises itself as a standard magical girl series--only to abruptly switch gears with a WHAM that managed to catch me off guard even when I was expecting it. Once I was braced for pain, I realized the biggest plot twist several episodes before it happened, but the reveal was so well done, I loved it. Not only was it even worse than I envisioned, there were several other bits of masterful storytelling later on that made my jaw drop.
Here's what I can say, though:
Ordinary eighth grader Madoka Kaname has a great life, but she's always yearned to be special. She gets her chance when she rescues Kyubey, a cat-alien telepath creature, from new transfer student Houmura Akemi, who is attempting to murder them. Kyubey reveals they have the power to grant wishes, but the price of granting your heart's desire is to become a magical girl and fight witches, spectral creatures who steal humanity's hopes and dreams.
Madoka is intrigued, especially since Kyubey hints Madoka has the potential to be the most powerful magical girl ever... but Houmura cryptically warns Madoka that all is not as it seems, and she will lose everything that matters--her family, her friends, even her life--if she makes a contract with Kyubey. Who should Madoka believe? And what will she wish for if and when she makes a contract?
Suffice to say, it takes a lot going wrong for everything to be right-- and even then, it's bittersweet.
That’s Houmura (left) fighting Mami, another magical girl. Because defeated witches drop magical power-ups, most magical girls are fiercely territorial and don’t appreciate interlopers on their hunting grounds. Yes, they went there, and it’s exactly as brutal as you’d expect.
Things I love about this show, in no particular order:
The animation is GORGEOUS. I love all of the character designs and battle sequences, but my favorite part is how the animation shifts from three to two-dimensional to indicate reality warping, and all of the witches are trippy existential nightmares with surreal, dream-like logic and beauty.
Aside from Madoka's father and brother, who appear in a few episodes, one classmate and a few background extras, every character is female. (Kyubey is gendered as "he" in the English dub, but I'm pretty sure they're non-binary.) The show passes the Bechdel test with flying colors -- Madoka has a lot of intense conversations with her mom about growing up, and there's also a great sequence where Madoka's mother and her teacher talk about their fears for the kids in their care that was so refreshing to see on-screen.
Magical girls using their powers for both epic and mundane things - like when Kyoko plays DDR in an arcade.
Female friendship is the heart and soul of PMMM, but there's also a lovely queer romance if you care to interpret it in that way (and the last episode offers plenty of shipping fuel).
“Cute” definitely doesn’t equal “harmless”, YES GOOD.
You know that trope where you watch an episode, and then later you get that exact same episode again, only it's different now because you know more than you did at the beginning, and you can see all the things you missed the first time around? This show does THAT and it's absolutely amazing.
This show has literally all of my favorite tropes: discussion of ethics and morality; training sequences; priming the audience to dislike a character only to force them to care about them before the end; call-backs up the wazoo; identity issues and [spoiler spoiler spoiler].
The shift in the end credits when shit hits the fan--and how the opening credits don't change at all, but what they MEAN shifts as our understanding deepens. AAAAAAAAAA so good.
10/10, would definitely watch again.
