A game about a monkey making deliveries on a moped. Released for (and starring the mascot of) the Watara Supervision, a Game Boy alternative and the spiritual predecessor to the similarly short-lived Mega Duck.

I expected to buy a console at the Bologna Nerd Show (videogames and anime convention in Italy), but I never thought I would have found... This! It's technically a really terrible portable console that was meant as a rival for the GameBoy, yes, but you know, collection reasons...! And even if it's bad, I'd still want to try it and review it. Luckily it was exceptionally cheap for what it is (I mean, not "cheap" per se, but it could have been way more expensive online), and I was so astonished to see one, that I couldn't leave it there! . And on the left, a cute plushie backpack that I got in the same place 🤣. Probably a better purchase than the poor Watara, according to most people 👀. Another obscure handheld for Lost in Cult's Handheld History: 88-95

This was illustrating an essay about the often forgotten Watara Supervision. Marketed as a cheap competitor to the Nintendo Game Boy, it featured many clone games, which were inferior and much more simplistic when compared to its rival.

Super Kong is an action game published by Thin Chen Enterprise in 1992 for the Watara SuperVision. In this title, the player controls a character on a rope who must drop a gorilla perched on a pole to the ground. The character uses stones to make the gorilla fall but must also avoid (what appears to be) a large puck that the gorilla occasionally throws. If the puck hits the player, they lose a life.

To make matters worse, critters periodically climb the rope the player is holding onto. If they reach the character, it's another lost life. To avoid them, the player must jump off the rope and wait for the critters to climb all the way to the top and disappear—all while staying mindful of the gorilla’s puck attack.

Adding to the challenge, blocks and bells descend from above during the battle, making it harder to hit the gorilla. Fortunately, there are bonuses to help: a watch that adds extra time, a heart that boosts the player’s speed and dodging ability, and a bomb that temporarily removes the aforementioned blocks and bells. The game is simple but genuinely a lot of fun. I can't recall playing anything quite like it, so despite its simplicity, the concept feels mostly original.

Super Kong consists of three stages that repeat in a random rotation. I managed to complete two loops before losing on the seventh stage—by then, the gorilla goes into berserk mode lol, flinging pucks continuously and at a much faster pace!

top five very specific game consoles

rubs my hands together like an evil fly. these are in no specific order i love them all equally. Below the cut because its long

vectrex console set (released november 1982) vector display based console with a built in CRT TV. early models were said to be very obnoxiously loud due to poor tube grounding. only had 28 games made for it. was killed decisively by the crash of 83 and later the advent of the gameboy.

2. super a'can (released october 1995) released only in taiwan and china and only has 12 games confirmed to have been released for it. based off of the motorola 9000 chip used for the sega genesis. the company that made it (funtech) lost over 6 million dollars because this was released around the same time as the playstation and n64. funtech had all development and production materials destroyed and the remaining consoles were sold for scrap parts.

3. terebikko / see n say videophone (1988 JP, 1989 US)

well obviously its shaped like a phone. how it was SUPPOSED to work was that you connect it to your TV's audio jack and throughout the interactive video you would receive "phone calls" from characters onscreen who would react differently and steer the game in different directions based on if you gave good or bad answers. fairly advanced for the time! only 25 games were ever released for it though

4. watara supervision (released 1992)

look at this freak. it sucks. BUT it had tilt controls which is more than could be said for the gameboy. could only play monochrome games from ROM and was a commercial failure due to having barely any games.

5. cybiko (released 2000)

a combination PDA and handheld console. could play games from PC download and had 430 games released (all of them free). the cybiko xtreme (a less colorful revision that failed to address several problems with the original) released and then 9/11 happened.

Interview  今こそ日本人クリエーターとやりたかった。 名曲「Angel」から約１年半ぶりにDOUBLE がニューシングル「Driving All Night／You Got To」を放った。両Ａ面となった今作は、前者をお馴染みの今井了介、後者をDJ WATARAIがプロデュース（R&Bの単独制作は初）、グルーブに満ち溢れた１枚となった。

●前回のアルバムはほとんど米国で作られていましたが、今回のシングル 「Driving All Night／You Got To」のプロデュースには今井了介氏やDJ WATARAI氏といった日本人を起用していますよね。 ▶前回のアルバムは本当に、 海外のプロデューサーたちと仕事をしたかったんだけど、 実際に本当に、向こうで凄く勉強になったんですね。 具体的に言うと、 ミックスの作業が凄く重要なんだっていうことに気づいて。 そこでの経験から、自分が求めてるサウンドがどういうモノなのか、エンジニアさんにも具体的に言えるようになった。 それを今、ここで活かしてみたかったんです。 だから、 今こそ日本人クリエイターとやりたかったし、精神的にも日本でやった方が楽ですし。 ●おふたりにはどういう音を求めていたのでしょうか? ▶とにかく今回はアッパーな曲をやりたい、っていうことだけ伝えました。 今井くんのデモの中でも 「Driving All Night」は一番ノリが良かったし、 WATARAさんの方も、 「You Got To｣のトラックが一番好きだったし、 聴いてすぐにメロディが浮かんだ。一番、シングル向けっていうか､「うん、本当にカッコ良いな」っていう。

●今でも曲作りはトラックが先で、そこからリリックを書いていく��じなのでしょうか? ▶そうですね。トラックに���メージ（メロ、コーラス、リリック)をハメていく感じで。 けど、「Driving All Night」は凄く珍しいことに、先に（単純にドライブの曲でも作ろうか）という構想があって、それが偶然にもトラックと一致したので、「これにしよう！」っていうことになったんです。 ●今井了介さんとは旧知の仲ですが、今回WATARAIさんと初めて一緒に作品作りに取り組んでみた印象はどうでした? ▶今までちゃんとお会いしたこともなかったんですよ。WATARAIさんのトラックは凄くレアで迫力のあるトラックなので、どんなイケイケな人が来るのかとドキドキしていたんですけど（笑）。 実際には物腰も柔らかい方で、やり取りもしやすかったですし、凄く謙虚な方でしたね。 ●「You Got To」はS-WORD氏と共演しているヴァージョンも収録されていますよね。 ▶実は、最初はラップなしのヴァージョンだけでいくつもりだったんですけど、ちょっとやっぱりラップが入った方がサウンド感があるなっていう風に感じて、 それでやることにしました。 ラップの部分はこちらからの注文も特になくて、S-WORDさんにお任してる感じですね｡ 余計な口出しはしなくても良いかなと思って。 ●どちらの曲にしても共通して感じるのは、コーラスの奥行きが深まったことだったのですが、注意した点はありますか？ ▶コーラスの部分は、いつもより気を使いましたね。 元々凄くグルーヴ感があるトラックなんで、それをコーラスで崩しちゃいけないなと思って。 ●声も深みが出た印象を受けたのですが。 ▶久しぶりにやってみて、 何か、〈ああ、大人になってきているわ〉みたいな感じはしました。 低い声の方が、 自分に凄いフィットしてきてるような気がして、そこのところは自分でも変化があったな、って感じますね。 ● このシングル、ライヴではいつ頃聴けるのでしょうか？ ▶今のところ考えていないんですけど、秋頃にアルバムをリリースした後に、ツアーで披露したいと考えています。

Magincross is a horizontal space shooter released in 1992 for the Watara Supervision. The game’s main gimmick is that the ship can transform into three different forms—two types of ships and a robot. While this might sound intriguing, it’s not exactly groundbreaking. Each form has a different type of weapon, adding a bit of variety, but nothing that really stands out.

As you play, you can collect three kinds of bonuses:

The speed bonus (marked with an S), which significantly improves maneuverability and makes the controls more responsive.

The health bonus (marked with an M—maybe it stands for "medical" or something), which restores a portion of your health bar.

The power bonus (marked with a P), which allows you to take down enemies more quickly. This one is especially useful when facing the end-level boss.

Speaking of the boss, it’s the same across all three levels; only the minions change slightly.

Overall, Magincross is a fairly ordinary shooter with limited variety and a short runtime. However, considering the limitations of the Watara Supervision—a system never known for top-tier gameplay or high-quality titles—perhaps we can cut it some slack. It’s not an impressive game by any means, but for those interested in the quirks of obscure consoles, it’s a small piece of gaming history worth acknowledging.
