Natsuhiko Amane had never been so terrified in the history of his existence. He would make those who voted for him pay. He would show them. He would show them, even if it meant ██████████.
But then, there she was. He could feel her hug before he heard her speak. He flinched at first, but then he relaxed slightly, hugging her back even tighter. When was the last time he had received a hug like this? █████, probably.
This confirmed Suzume was his friend, right? He began to sob, loudly. ███ was wrong. He did have a friend. He did, and that only made him cry harder.
"A-Aozora-chan...! I'm, I'm...it was so s-scary...Aozora-chan..."
Natsuhiko just cried. There was nothing more he could do at this point. ██████████ was decided. Suzume was his friend...and friends told each other everything, right?
Then he would tell her. He would tell her about █████.
"...Aozora-chan."
He released her, wiping his tears away.
"Can we be friends...no matter what the future holds?"
He was praying that she would say yes.
Broken Bird | Amane Natsuhiko
Silence fell after the exit of the robot and his victim, a kind of mutual shellshock that settled upon the realization that not only was one of their own being tortured, but that they were the ones responsible for it. It was their choice. How could they pretend to sympathise with Natsuhiko when they had been the ones to collectively send him to such a punishment?
She hadn’t voted for him though. For the second time within these studios and one of the few times within her life - Suzume felt something hot and altogether destructive rising within her. An impulse, an urge, a need to shout. Anger?
"How could you?!"
No. Rage.
She didn’t know what she was doing, but the words spilled out in a volley of fury that she couldn’t control. It scared the usually so cheerful aviculturist, but she had no choice here but to be a slave to her own currently wild emotions.
"Hasn’t Amane-san been through enough? I don’t care what he did back when Nook-chan died, or if you don’t like him - how could you? Th-that’s like pushing over a guy with broken legs and then kicking his crutches away! What on earth made you think that it was an okay thing to do?"
Suzume knew it wasn’t all of them. She refused to believe it, and yet the fire coursing through her veins refused to cool as she half-shouted, half-screeched.
"If you voted for Amane-san; I think you’re awful! I h-h-ha-" No. Even then, she couldn’t say it. "I’ve worked with birds that have more compassion than that! I-"
She had to stop. Suzume didn’t like being angry. It was too much for her, such a shock to the system of one to whom the feeling was altogether alien. Wiping irate tears with an armwarmer, Suzume turned and sprinted out of the room, pushing past anyone in her way.
————————————-
"Amane-san!"
Hours later, Suzume had tentatively returned. Hugging Kyuri had served to pacify her anger, and whilst the plush alligator had failed to return her to full cheer she was still remarkably more upbeat than she had been a short while beforehand. She had opened the door a crack, the toy stuffed under her arm.
How was she to know that it was where Natsuhiko would return? She didn’t, in all honesty. But she had no better idea where to look than where he had last been seen.
Her face lit up when she saw him on the stage. Suzume didn’t even pause to take note of his condition as she dumped Kyuri in order to dash up to the stage, inelegantly clamber up and envelop the petite painter in a tight hug.
"I was so worried about you! Did Monty-chan hurt you? I think they were really mean to vote for you. I’m so glad you’re okay!" She didn’t pause for breath at all; everything came out in a gush of relief.

tristesse // murder reaction + open i guess // amane
Natsuhiko felt himself stumbling towards the hubbub of voices. A murder. Monty....Monty had said there was a murder. Somehow, Natsuhiko was fearing the worst.
He pushed past the people crowding the scene, growing frantic. Where was she? Why did he care so much? They had only had...one positive conversation?
It was...desperate of him. But...he wanted to latch onto her. That was...she wanted to be his friend? She wanted to be his friend...that was...no one ever wanted to be his friend. They were so put off at his temper, his childishness, his everything...
Natsuhiko wanted to latch onto her and cry. She couldn't be dead. She couldn't.
So, who was it.
Natsuhiko turned and grabbed the nearest person, shaking them violently.
"Is it...Aozora-chan?"

Secret || Amane Motve Reaction
Natsuhiko could care less about these loser-y secrets. Haha, they were stupid. Were any really worth killing over?
Natsuhiko didn't even have any real secrets that were bad enough to kill over or...wait.
There was...but no...Monty couldn't possibly know about THAT, could he? Natsuhiko closed his eyes, trying to regain his calmness.
"I do not believe...that secret is something worth dying over."
But just who was he talking to? Probably himself.
However...he sounded the tiniest bit uncertain.

Natsuhiko smiled a bit and shrugged. He was strangely happy that Suzume seemed to be excited about the flying fish. He racked his memory for more fun facts about the flying fish that Suzume would enjoy.
"Hm. There are flying fish around Japan, yeah. Actually, the flying fish with the longest recorded flight was seen near some island. It was something like...44 or 45 seconds? Jeez, I can't remember. So it would be cool for when we got out of here if we, well..you could see them."
Suzume's next statement seemed to catch Natsuhiko off-guard. Friend? He had some mixed feelings about that, so he stayed quiet for a little while.
"Whatever."
However, he said this with a big stupid-looking grin. Jeez Natsuhiko, you look so dumb.
"The question game, huh? Okay. Well. Um. I was sort of destined to become soooome kind of artist. My family's famous for that. My mother is a sculptor...my dad's a glassblower. All that fun stuff. Well...one day they took me too an amusement park. I...I really loved the carousel the most. All the horses were painted so intricately and...well, I wanted to do that."
Natsuhiko ran a hand through his hair and shrugged. Letting out a small sigh, he decided on a question for Suzume.
"Okay, here's a question for you. Have you ever been to an amusement park?"
Look to the sun, and the shadows fall behind you | Amane + Aozora
Were Amane Natsuhiko not blind, he would have seen Suzume’s face absolutely light up when he mentioned flying fish. Not exclusively due to the concept of fishbirds, therefore elevating fish to a higher level of existence in Suzume’s eyes - although the image of a feathery fish soaring gracefully from the sea and into the sunset was certainly a novel one - but because, by mentioning them, Natsuhiko had been attempting to make small talk with her. Would he have done that before? Did this mean that she was slightly less despised by him now? She sure hoped so.
"Oh, wowie wow! Flying fish? Can they be found in Japan? I wanna see! Hey, maybe we can go and see them together once we’re out of this place, yeah?"
Wait. Oh yeah. Blind.
That thought hit Suzume like a tonne of bricks and sobered her up considerably. Reminding herself to not mention the concept of ‘seeing things’ again, Suzume moved on to one of his other responses.
"But if you only let your friends touch Anemone-chan, then does that mean that you don’t have any friends here? That’s a shame. Making friends is an important part of being at school, you know! Or not at school, I guess, since this isn’t Hope’s Peak. It’s important anyway."
Yet even as she said this, her mind flitted back to the trial.
“See? Nook-chan and I were friends!”
“Friends are useless.”
“Just because you don’t have any!”
The exchange was crystal clear in her mind - Suzume had a good memory. Did that mean that not only did Natsuhiko have no friends within the studio, but that he had no friends at all? Until recently, she had been the same; no friends but birds. But somehow, Suzume didn’t think that her lack of friends had been anything like Natsuhiko’s. Her isolation was a result of circumstance, and she had grown used to being on her own. Did Natsuhiko just not want any friends? Or had he always just been incapable of making them?
It occurred to Suzume that she had allowed herself a long pause to think on this, leaving a substantial silence, and so she blurted her first thought.
"Then I’m just going to have to make you my friend! That way I can ride Anemone-chan! And if we’re going to be friends, then I’ve got to get to know you, yeah? So, uh, how about we do the question game - I ask, you answer, you ask and so on!"
She didn’t leave time for him to agree or disagree before asking her first query. “So, Amane-san, what got you into painting?”

As Natsuhiko was led towards the kitchen, there was silence for a moment. He was quite enjoying the silence, but he knew with someone like Aozora there wouldn't be silence for long.
Suddenly, Aozora was asking him questions. Normally this would've annoyed the shit out of Natsuhiko-he wasn't one for nosy people-but these questions were...
...These questions were about Anemone-chan. He felt compelled to answer them. After all, who knows when he could talk about Anemone-chan without Yukimura barging in, waving a torch like Anemone-chan was Frankenstein's monster.
"Anemone-chan was given to me as a 10th birthday present. She was just an unpainted horse at that time. Yes, I did paint her myself, uh. Thanks."
He paused. Why was she so interested in conversing with him? Ugh. This was confusing.
"I have many other horses, but I have given them all good homes within carousel museums and amusement parks, where everyone will be able to appreciate their beauty."
He thought for a second about the next question.
"I like sea life and, uh, anemone is a really pretty word. I thought it would be fitting for a pretty horse like herself."
She was interested in birds right...? Maybe she'd like this.
"Aozora-san, did you know that there are fish in the ocean that can fly like birds? They're called flying fish. They can breach the surface and like, fly a bit. I thought you'd like to know...because you're interested in birds. Or is that someone else?"
He shrugged. Whatever, he didn't care that much. At her next two questions he grimaced slightly.
"I do not, I don't...! I don't sully Anemone-chan with any mortals' touch. Only my friends are allowed to touch her. And Yukimura, but that was one time...."
Pause.
"If Yukimura even so much as thinks about harming Anemone-chan, I will gut her."
Dammit Natsuhiko, and you were making progress too...
Look to the sun, and the shadows fall behind you | Amane + Aozora
Suzume laughed as they made their way towards the cafeteria. It was slow progress overall, due to the fact that she had both Natsuhiko to steer and an injury of her own to contend with. But that wasn’t particularly a bad thing - it gave them more time for conversation. Was Amane Natsuhiko a particularly good conversational partner? Only time would tell. But Suzume figured that it would be better than an awkward silence, and she was willing to be open minded.
But how did one make small talk with someone like Natsuhiko? Suzume doubted that birds were one of his special interests, and she wasn’t an expert in much else. Or anything else. She wasn’t even an expert in birds, really - just good at taming and caring for them. Ask her about complex ornithology and she’d fail to impress.
However, there was one thing that Suzume was sure for certain that Amane Natsuhiko was interested in.
"So where’d you get Anemone-chan?" She asked. "She’s really pretty - did you paint her? Do you have any other horses? How did you come up with her name? Can I ride on her? D’you think Yukimura-dono’s really going to try burning her?"
The questions all came out in one big flood, and it wasn’t until she had said the last one that Suzume left any room for an answer. The aviculturist wasn’t actually too concerned about the answers - okay, maybe she was very eager to hear the penultimate one - but at the very least she could hopefully get Natsuhiko talking.

Natsuhiko huffed indignantly as she began to try and describe the sky it to him. Jeez, why did she even care so much about this stupid sky anyway? Nevertheless, he turned his head upward, trying to look at the sky only to see nothing, before he realized--...
Oh shit, he's blind. Duh.
And then she started chastising him for being a douche during the last trial. Well, he definitely deserved it. He lowered his head to what he assumed was eye-level and frowned. He was prepared to make a bunch of excuses, but...
"I'm s..."
He folded his arms across his chest. Damn, damn, damn. Why was this hard? He tapped his foot impatiently as he waited for the words to emerge.
Then she spoke again. What she spoke about holding grudges was certainly true--he always seemed to be tired. She took his arm once again and he assumed she was steering him the direction of the kitchen. That or she was leading him to a deserted place so she could off him. But that was unlikely, given it was Aozora.
"Accompany? Fine. Whatever gets you to get me food faster."
Though he said this, he couldn't help but smile. It sounded friendlier, did it? Hmm.
Look to the sun, and the shadows fall behind you | Amane + Aozora
Oh. Suzume stared at Natsuhiko, her eyes widening. He couldn’t see? Was that what Monty-chan did to him? Even though Suzume’s feelings towards the painter were the closest to hatred that she had felt towards anyone, she couldn’t help but feel pity. He was only a fledgling, scared of what could happen. And whilst he’d been exceedingly insensitive towards Nook-chan, she couldn’t bring herself to sustain her animosity towards him.
"Oooohhh…." She nodded slowly with the realization. "Well I’ll- uh, I’ll describe it to you, alright? It’s blue and there’s these clouds and one of them looks like a carrot and-"
She was promptly cut off by Natsuhiko’s blunt request - no, he phrased it like an order. Huh. Looks like he was just as haughty as ever. He could have at least said ‘please’! Suzume raised an eyebrow as she retorted, looking away from the ‘sky’.
"And what if I don’t want to, huh, Rotten Noodle-chan? You were really mean back at that trial. Calling me names and mocking Nook-chan! Why would I want to take you anywhere? Hmmmm?" She folded her arms and took the opportunity to stick her tongue out at the boy, regardless of whether or not he could actually see the action.
However, her mouth twisted into a gentle smile afterwards.
"Luckily for you, Grandmother always taught me to be forgiving. Holding grudges just wears you out, yeah? It’s much easier to just let it go before you exhaust yourself." Suzume reached out to hold Natsuhiko’s arm as she began to steer him in the direction of the cafeteria. "Although I still don’t like your wording! How about ‘accompany’ instead of ‘escort’? It’s more friendly that way!"

Natsuhiko wasn't sure where he was going, or where the fuck he was. It was a miracle he hadn't fallen down or run into someone who would take advantage of Natsuhiko's blind state. He was wandering aimlessly, knowing he should've just stayed in his room.
But hell. He was hungry, and he thought he'd venture to the kitchen for a snack. Unfortunately, he had gotten....more than a bit lost. He was without Anemone-chan-for fear of someone destroying her-and he was staaarving.
He walked around aimlessly, wondering if he'd finally die here when he couldn't find the cafeteria. Haha, as if! It takes more than a little hunger to kill the mighty prince...and he'd find the cafeteria. Probably. But as his stomach growled, he was reminded of how hungry he was.
Suddenly, he felt his arm being grabbed, and then he was being dragged into some place.
Oh. It was Aozora. Hmph. He should've known.
"How am I supposed to look. I can't see."
He stared at where he assumed her face was, grabbing his arm back. Then he had a perfect idea. Aozora was pretty harmless, right?
"You will escort me to the cafeteria. I am hungry and blind."
Look to the sun, and the shadows fall behind you | Amane + Aozora
It was only after a substantial nap followed by a shower that Suzume felt ready to start exploring. She had resolved to not leave her room without a positive attitude- and so the girl took time to muster said attitude before setting foot outside her door, hair still damp and the newly embroidered Kyuri tucked under her arm. There was an unmistakable spring in the aviculturist’s step; a marked contrast from her tearful, distraught state at the trial.
Was it forced? She didn’t actually know. Was avoiding negative feelings the same as forcing positive ones? Suzume was never a girl to ask these sorts of questions. She had made up her mind to be a beacon of brightness and so she had become one. The process was less important to her than the outcome.
She jumped at the metal detector’s beeping as she entered, despite having seen it shortly before. The absurdity of this caused her to giggle to herself as she began to explore the floor, shoes squeaking on the polished floor. Suzume had glanced at her ID card beforehand, so she knew that most of the new area was out of bounds for her. That was fine. She hadn’t really been intending to do much working out at the gymnasium, and whilst the ocean liner set and gift shop did sound intriguing she could wait until somebody else gave her access (just like Otoko-san did in that vid- Suzume abruptly halted that train of thought and transferred to another.)
But there was one room that Suzume’s ID card did indeed give her access to. The car park. Its name was perhaps not a glamorous one, and most people would have found little to be excited about concerning what was essentially a glorified concrete slab. But Suzume was ever the optimist. Surely Monty-chan wouldn’t have made it an exclusive access area if there wasn’t something to be excited about there, right? And hey, maybe they could all learn to drive and have races!
Unfortunately, the car park did not look like something to be excited about, nor was it prime ground for any kind of racing. The only vehicles present didn’t look at all ready for any kind of action. Suzume frowned, turning to look at Kyuri as though they would have any comment to make.
Alas, Suzume’s talents lay with birds and not stuffed plush alligators. If only, Kyuri, if only. She turned away from the toy with a sigh and was about to go to the kitchen for some breakfast before she caught sight of something that made her disappointed face light up with some rare exuberance as had not been displayed for quite some time.
She scurried out of the car park as fast as her injured ankle would carry her, latching onto the arm of some unsuspecting passerby and attempting to drag them into the car park.
"Look! Look! You can see the sky!"

"..."
Amane Natsuhiko is shaking. Visibly shaking. He's unable to keep steady hands as he folds them on his lap. He looks rather disturbed actually.
"I...I have to get out of here."
He murmurs softly, jolting upright so fast the chair falls backwards. With those words, he races out of that room. Bye Amane!

Haha, this was gonna be so great. Natsuhiko grinned snootily as he put his hands on his hips. Now what could he do to piss Aihara off? ...he had heard someone calling him Legolas before.
Wasn't that...wasn't that the elf dude archer person from Lord of the Flies? Or was it Lord of the Rings...whatever! It wasn't important. What was important was that he could convince this simpleton his friend was actually an elf.
"Matsui. I've got something important to tell you about Aihara. You know him, right?"
"Well~, you'll never believe what I saw."
Maybe he should milk it a bit more...
...Nah! This was going to be priceless.
"Aihara? He has elf ears. He's an elf, Matsui. I think you should investigate this. Since you're so close to him. He seems to be very fond of you."
Oh my god. Natsuhiko, you're too mean.

Natsuhiko had been sitting in the courtyard, ready to stir up some trouble. Maybe he'd go and seek out that Aihara kid. Man, Natsuhiko disliked that boy.
He was definitely in the mood to cause some havoc. Right now, anyone would do, and it seemed someone was smiling down upon Natsuhiko, as he saw that green haired kid walking through the courtyard.
Natsuhiko stood up, calling across the courtyard.
"You! Come here, now! Matsui, was it?"
This kid, he seemed to like Rin a lot from what Natsuhiko had gathered. Hmm. Maybe there was some fun left to be had.
