edit: might need to add some additional dialogue to this to make it more clear, but a clarification in the interim; he knows about his own footprints. he's just surprised to see something similar already there when he knows he's only just landed. he lifts his own shoe to confirm that they're not identical (and also to reveal this to the viewer). seems his stoicism beat off the clarity in this one, sorry 😭

A little backstory tidbit for my Grown Apart AU:

Contrary to their current relationship, there was a time when Donnie saw Big Mama's Assistant as a friend.

He spent a good deal of time talking to them, as they were the only person who seemed genuinely interested in listening to his thoughts and ideas (before April or Shelldon came along). Their quietness, which earned them a "spooky" reputation with most of the hotel staff, never bothered Donnie - he gravitated towards them for that very reason.

Since they never spoke, Donnie started teaching himself sign language to make communicating a little easier. They still didn't say a lot, but he'd get the occasional one-or-two-word response from time-to-time, which was enough to know they were listening.

I wanted to ask, what's your take on recovery!au (unless you intend to cover it in your fic)? In the universe, where Jimmy happens, but the crew somehow survives. Everyone is traumatised, Anya is pregnant, Curly is disabled (could he even be able to afford disability aids? Pony express in no more, would they even be paid a sufficient compensation?). There is also a question of p*lice investigation (or whatever agency is responsible for space crimes), even more trauma... Man, it's bleak.

I like them sad but for emotional and physical recovery reason rather than all the actual legal stuff that would ensue.

I like when Swansea relapsing is explored and Daisuke losing a little bit of his light. I am clearly a big supporter of Anya and Curly remaining close friend after but I think exploring the unhealthy dynamics of the trauma bond they’d develop should be played with way more. I think it’s a bit annoying when people are on the nose about Anya telling Curly he should’ve done more, especially when he’s struggling through recovery.

I feel like people really want her to be a character to rub salt into wounds, just to give her something cathartic, but it’s just OOC for me. It’s not a kindness thing but I don’t think she wants that sort of guilt to stay with him like that? He did not do what Jimmy did, he could’ve done more to stop it but she would not intentionally try to direct what she can never take out towards Jimmy at Curly. At least when they all make it out. This is not to say she doesn’t think he shouldn’t have any remorse but she understands that no one else could have foreseen Jimmy crashing the ship or getting that bad.

I like when it gets psychoanalytic in fics with the crew. Talk about Curly finally opening up on details on how he and Jimmy were friends, have the others realize how bad Jimmy was to even Curly, not a lot of people realize that they don’t know how Jimmy was to him. Have Anya be angry and snippy, have her worry she’s becoming like Jimmy even though she could never be like him, it’s that fear though, that she is owed that cathartic release and may take it out on others in some selfish subconscious desire to reclaim control for herself. Have her actualize-herself, is med school the only option? What does she want now? Does Swansea divorce his wife, give up on the life he created because he was just following the path of a good man, one he didn’t believe? Or does he stay and use the time he has left to make it something he believes in. How is Daisuke? Is he more mature or does he lose a little light? What are his new aspirations if any? His relationship with his parents?

Ultimately, I think a recover au should really focus on just them actually getting to know each other and filling themselves. So much of their interactions were likely based on coworker dynamics first. With that out the window they are now people who can’t really move on from each other but need to move on in life.

Rambling post about The Art TM

Firstly, a special thank you to @livmadart who fuelled my motivation with her lovely tags on my art to finish making this post as soon as I could (life just likes to get in my way). You are such an amazing person and artist (by the way, everyone should totally check out Liv's BDay piece for our favourite little menace BECAUSE IT'S GORGEOUS), and your words always mean a lot to me (even if I'm not the best at communication, for which I apologize, still love and adore you, despite the awkwardness and sporadic talks).

The Idea

My art was inspired by the amazing @detshin's piece. Ever since I've seen it, I felt the urge to make a companion piece for it; I adore the composition and the symbolism in it to bits.

The Concept

I also wanted to take my own spin on the piece. From the start I wanted:

Conan's eyes not being covered (because he can see)

Conan looking at the viewer like he is looking straight into your soul. No thoughts, head empty why, it just felt right.

His mouth to be the one that is covered in some way. The sheer symbolism of his mouth being obstructed (but cannot speak) just made my heart ache so badly.

Changing the outfit based on this musing of mine.

As for the rest, it came about when sketching around, and waiting for that CLICK in my brain. And the forget-me-nots covering his mouth was that CLICK: SYMBOLISM IS MY LIFEBLOOD.

The Materials

I had 2 techniques in mind: watercolours and soft pastels. Ultimately I decided on soft pastels because

I haven't worked with pastels in YEARS, yet I adore the technique

I haven't used these pastels since I got them from an attic cleaning that we did for an old lady last year-ish (they would have been thrown away, after YEARS OF DISUSE and my heart couldn't take it, SUCH BEAUTIFUL MATERIALS TO WASTE AWAY)

I felt that what the material has to offer suited this particular piece: the vibrant colours offering a certain contrast to the original piece, and a certain feel (especially on the right paper) to the texture.

After some testing, I decided that going with a dark background works better: it made the colours more vibrant, and the slight texture of the paper did its magic. + Dark VS Light background colour was another nice contrast between the two pieces.

The Making

At first I didn't know what to use to sketch with, so I tested a couple things, and ultimately went with a white pencil: easy enough to erase if needed but also visible enough to see on this particular paper I had.

Looking up and studying tons of reference pictures for various things (sometimes with more, sometimes with less luck): the pose, facial features, the flowers... I have a whole folder of 'em LMAO

Then came the colours, which I tested on a separate piece of paper, to see which ones I want to use... After that I added the main blocks of colours.

And when I liked it, proceeding with the actual colouring: mixing all the different colours and layering them. In some places I used 4-6 colours (or more, depending how you look at it), while I used only 2, but mostly 3 in others.

Lastly: I used hairspray as a fixative, which slightly changed the quality and texture of the pastels and colours. (See below.)

The Feelings

As mentioned above, it has been years (I think around a decade actually, what the fck) since I used soft pastels, so it was a bit of a challenge to get back into using the material (and I'm not as experimental and confident I want to be yet, and likely fried my brain a little in the process). Also tons of fun, though! I forgot how much fun is there in the process of creation, and this piece brought that back into my life.

HOW IT FEELS TO DISAPPEAR: DESCENT

"Hey, uh... I'm- I'm so sorry, but I think I saw something weird..."

"... You tend to get that in a haunted graveyard," he replies flatly, turning to look back at you with a raised eyebrow.

"I- I KNOW," you scoff, "I caught plenty of Ghost Pokemon around here! I just... Don't think this was one of those...? I'm worried- what if it's a stray Pokemon? It looked tiny..."

He frowns, scratching his chin.

"You don't have to stay stuck to me at the hip, man," he replies. "You wanna look around? Look around. Just... Try to be careful, would you? Don't go too far, don't head up any other floors... Gods know what kind of curses or bad omens are lying around here."

You spring to your feet, nodding quickly.

"Of course-! Trust me, I wouldn't dream of doing anything reckless," you assure him. He laughs a bit, nodding in return.

"Good. Cause I swear, if I have to bury you, I'm gonna ACTUALLY go crazy."

You giggle with him, giving a big salute- although a part of you can tell he's not entirely joking. You brush the thought aside, though. You're a capable trainer- probably the most capable trainer in all of Kanto! You know you don't have anything to worry about.

"Well, you can tuck that shovel away, Mr. Gravedigger- I'll be fine! Cross my heart, hope to not-die." you tell him lightheartedly. "I'll just be right back, okay?"

He nods. "Okay."

With that, you step back, walking farther into this floor of the graveyard. You carefully maneuver around the various headstones- what kind of bad karma would it be to knock a grave out of place, you think with a shudder. But you're careful as always. Being cautious was never a problem for you, after all!

... You end up searching between the cracks and crevices of tombs and graves for a while, though. You feel about ready to call it quits, doing one last walk around the outer walls of this floor, when you finally spot the culprit of that brown little blur that had scared you so badly, hiding in a far corner behind a grave:

An Eevee.

The poor thing looks terrible... Thin, sickly, and trembling. Your heart sinks for it- Eevees aren't from this part of Kanto, and especially with the state it's in, someone must have dumped the Pokemon in the tower and called it a day. It's starving so bad, you can see its ribs, and you wonder; how long has it been here...?

You try to approach quietly, as to avoid startling it- but when it sees you, it still tenses, its hackles raising and its ears flattening against its head. You can't blame it- being abandoned by some cruel trainer must've done awful things for its trust of humans.

Still, you aren't going to get anywhere if its scared of you.

Hero/Villain Amnesia CYOA Part 2

CW: Heights, possible manipulation

You chose: Villain

In the brief matter of time afforded you, you make a snap decision to go with Villain. You can’t be sure they’re telling the truth, but they seem like your best bet at escaping at least.

You dash towards where they’re standing. Chaos erupts behind you; you don't dare stop to look back, you can only hope that they're all more occupied with fighting each other than pursuing you.

You reach the opening and feel the kiss of fresh air before anyone else reaches you. Villain starts climbing out as soon as you approach.

The hole in the wall leads to…just about nothing, as far as you can tell. You were hoping for at least a fire escape. You realize Villain intends to climb down the outside of the building itself. It’s rough enough to be doable, but you’re high up.

You start to have a few regrets, but you’re pulled out before you can go back on your decision.

“Come on. We’ll have to climb down this quickly if we want to get away before any of the others get us.”

You're about to argue that you've never climbed the outside of a building before, but the protest dies in your throat as you realize maybe you did and you can't remember it.

“Hope you're not afraid of heights,” Villain says as they move down the building.

You don't know. You can't remember any experience with heights.

You start climbing after them. You manage; you’re not sure if that’s due to the handhold and footholds being decent enough that most fit people could do it, or if there’s some kind of forgotten or buried experience giving you the skill.

You cling to the wall, desperate to make it out of this safely. You can’t help but think about how if you’d gone with one of the others, at least you wouldn’t have had to do this.

“Come on,” Villain hisses. They’re faster than you; clearly they remember how to do this kind of thing.

A deep loud noise—something collapsing perhaps—rattles through the building, and you hug closer to the wall, suddenly plagued by new doubts about its stability.

At last you make it to the bottom and step down from the wall. A little shaky, you breathe out a sigh of relief as you stand on solid ground again. It looks like you made it without picking up any pursuers. Villain nudges you around a corner where the two of you will be less exposed. As you catch your breath, their eyes flick over the damaged building you escaped from, watching for trouble.

“I can take you to my base, where we’ll be safer, but you’ll have to swear not to betray the location to anyone else,” Villain says to you, eyes intense.

Villain hasn’t led you wrong so far, but also this might be your last chance to split. Once you get into their base, you’re more committed, and there’s also a chance they’ll want more than just your word ensuring their secrets are kept safe. But on the other hand, if you did go off alone, you’d be flying completely blind with your memories gone.
