what music I think jjk adults would listen to
✧ ft: satoru, suguru, nanami, shoko, choso, higuruma, toji, sukuna, and kenjaku ✧ a/n: been thinking about this for a minute, and I decided to write out my opinions/hcs
jjk student version here + jjk character playlist works here
· · ───────────── 𖥸 ────────────── · ·
✦ gojo
➥ Gojo is a very laid-back and fun guy, so I think he would listen to music that has that same energy
➥ He kinda reminds me of those moms who listen to the overplayed songs on the radio and always sing them, I don’t know to explain it, but that's him
➥ I think that he gets his song recs from his students in a attempt to bond with them
songs
♪ Heaven To Me: Tyler, The Creator ♪ Chanel: Frank Ocean ♪ Died and Came Back: Lil Uzi Vert ♪ Pop Style: Drake ♪ Wake Up in the Sky: Gucci Mane ft. Bruno Mars
───────────────────────────────
✦ geto
➥ I think Geto listens to a little bit of everything, alternative, rock, rap, R&B, and hip-hop. I can’t really picture him strictly listening to rock and alt. It doesn’t feel right
➥ As Geto got older, I think his music taste changed. He still likes everything, but he leaned towards one genre rather than several
➥ When Mimi and Nana show Geto their favorite music, he adds the one he likes to his own playlist, and vice versa
songs
♪ Sextape: Deftones ♪ Passion Fruit: Drake ♪ Rental: Brockhampton ♪ 3005: Childish Gambino ♪ Even Flow: Pearl Jam
───────────────────────────────
✦ shoko
➥ I think the music that she listens to is very mellow and relaxing but might have some sad undertone to it from time to time
➥ She gives me older music vibes from the 70s to the 90s. Like Fleetwood Mac, ABBA, and Sade. I can’t see her listening to newer music
➥ I think she listens to more female artists than men; it’s not intentional. She does enjoy songs from men, but it’s a pattern. I also think that Shoko is a big fan of The Cranberries; I am a soul believer in this
songs
♪ Sunday: The Cranberries ♪ Bette Davis Eyes: Kim Carnes ♪ Fade Into You: Mazzy Star ♪ Landslide: Fleetwood Mac ♪ So Far Away: Carole King
───────────────────────────────
✦ nanami
➥ Student Nanami was emo, so he definitely listened to My Chemical Romance
➥ He started listening to more rock when he grew out of his emo phase. He prefers light rock rather than heavy
➥ When he gets sick of music, he puts on a podcast about business/the economy, or world events OR OR audiobooks
songs
♪ Helena: My Chemical Romance ♪ I Miss You: blink-182 ♪ Dust in the Wind: Kansas ♪ Dancing In the Dark: Bruce Springsteen ♪ Rocket Man: Elton John
───────────────────────────────
✦ choso
➥ He’s giving off rock and metal vibes, also like sub-genres of those
➥ His go-to music is rock, but I definitely think he listens to other music, something like R&B and hip-hop
➥ Like the great sibling, he is, he always gives Yuji the aux and listens to his song recs
songs
♪ Granite: Sleep Token ♪ Generation Dead: Five Finger Death Punch ♪ Enter Sandman: Metallica ♪ Chop Suey!: System Of A Down ♪ War Inside My Head: Suicidal Tendencies
───────────────────────────────
✦ higuruma
➥ Similar to Shoko, I think he also listens to older music rather than newer stuff, but it’s not because he doesn’t enjoy new music; he is just too busy and stressed to figure out what artist he likes and just stays to what he knows
➥ He’s a big Radiohead fan, and maybe The Smiths, too? Music that's kind of sad and angst, yk?
➥ Genre-wise, I think he would like a little of everything if he could sit down and enjoy music.
songs
♪ Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now: The Smiths ♪ Karama Police: Radiohead ♪ Wild Sex (In The Working Class): Oingo Boingo ♪ Eyes Without A Face: Billy Idol ♪ What’s Up?: 4 Non Blondes
───────────────────────────────
✦ toji
➥ Definitely listens to divorce dad music
➥ Drinks a nice cold beer while listening to Nickelback
➥ I think because Toji doesn't think highly of himself, I can see him listening to self-loathing music and music that relates to anger or internal turmoil
songs
♪ How You Remind Me: Nickelback ♪ Pancake Land: Element Eighty ♪ The Man Who Sold the World: Nirvana ♪ It’s Been Awhile: Stained ♪ Crawling: Linkin Park
───────────────────────────────
✦ sukuna
➥ So, at first, I was sure he would listen to heavy metal and rock because he has such an aggressive personality, but after I gave it some more thought canon, Sukuna would hate it. Music or noise that loud and obnoxious would annoy him.
➥ Acknowledging the fact that he was born in the Heian era and during that time, they listened to Gagaku (court music), which is either instrumental or vocal. It’s calming and relaxing in contrast to his persona
➥ Or he hates music altogether, idk; he's a grumpy old man. Everything pisses him off
songs
♪ Menace: Five Finger Death Punch ♪ Monster: Skillet ♪ Bullet With Butterfly Wings: The Smashing Pumpkins ♪ Push: Matchbox Twenty ♪ Geisha: Anthony Davilio
───────────────────────────────
✦ kenjaku
➥ Since he's over a thousand years old, imma say he has a very diverse taste of music and probably listens to a little bit of everything. If I were to choose what genre he likes most, I would say rock, both light and heavy
➥ Kenjaku enjoys listening to Marilyn Mason and Oingo Bingo. Marilyn Mason because he’s Marilyn Mason (derogatory) and Oingo Bingo because of their surrealist music, which I think Kenjaku would find them entertaining
➥ Listens to music that feeds into his delusions, motivating him to continue with his vision of the world he wants
songs
♪ Weird science: Oingo Boingo ♪ Aerials: System Of A Down ♪ Break My Stride: Matthew Wilder ♪ The Beautiful People: Marilyn Mason ♪ Everybody Wants To Rule The World: Tears For Fears

✧ I currently have over 1.9k liked songs, so hopefully, there is enough diversity in songs and artists. i was going to do yuki, but it was stressing me out. Maybe in the future, I'll add hers. music tag game !!
shuffle your songs and list the first 10, and tag 10 people!
thank you @tonesurvivor for tagging me :)
glad i don’t have to choose 10 songs, cause that’s so fucking hard. i love music so much. anyways, here is my 10 with some little comments for each one !!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
1. second chances by gregory alan isakov
i love gregory alan isakov so much. his music is so gentle, and i listen to it a lot whenever i need to sleep. but his work is so beautiful, and this is one of my favourites by him.
2. dream state… by lucy dacus
angela … i see you. lucy dacus is SO talented. her solo work, along with her works in boygenius are just some of the best things i’ve ever heard. i love queer artists.
3. son of a son of a sailor by jimmy buffet
i got this song from my dad, who got it from his mum. this is so nostalgic for me, i remember it playing when i was a kid, riding in the car with him with this song blaring, or in the summer when my brother and i would run around. this song is childhood for me.
4. endless love by piero picconi
soundtracks and instrumentals are one of my weaknesses. i play it when i’m driving and the sun is gonna set. i feel like i live in italy listening to this. like this is what is playing in my head as a montage of my life with my future partner is rolling. i don’t know. it’s just perfect. i love you piero picconi.
5. i’m yours tonight by bloodwitch
the guitar in this. that’s all dude. the guitar in this is so HOT. the “i’m waiting…for you to show me…” is my favourite part of this song. it scratches a part of my brain.
6. little miss magic by jimmy buffet
again, got this from my dad. he would sing this to me a lot, i’m apparently his “little miss magic.” it is pure nostalgia for me, and i love it so much. jimmy buffett has so many good songs, especially from his earlier days.
7. routines in the night by twenty one pilots
listened to a lot of them in high school, and have seen them twice (seeing them a third time this year). this song is my favourite off the clancy album. their music got me through a lot, so i’m glad i got back into them recently! josh is also the reason i started playing drums.
8. falling for love by weezer
WEEZER I LOVE YOU WEEZERRRR. i saw them live, one of the best experiences ever. i love weezer so fucking much guys. i’m getting a weezer tattoo like i love them so much. i listened to them so much in high school as well. i love this band. that’s all i can say. this is one of my favourite songs too.
9. beach baby by bon iver
same vibes as gregory alan isakov. bon iver’s music is so gentle and beautiful. it’s the perfect wind down music, music to sleep to or music to help get my emotions out. it makes me feel so many things, and i love when music can evoke such raw emotion. also twilight singer lmfao !!
10. give you my lovin by mazzy star
mazzy star you will forever be famous. i beg people to listen to more mazzy star outside of fade into you. yes that is an AMAZING song. but dear god, they have such gorgeous music. my eats are blessed. she hangs brightly may just bey favourite album by them!!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
i know i’m supposed to tag 10 people but erm, i feel bad doing it i can’t explain why (anxiety for sure). but if you want to do it and you see this post, feel free to act as though i tagged you!!

Bro I got more for the 80’s/90’s au:
Title already reminds me of Gojo but the lyrics as well is just. Hhhh. Reminds me of when Geto started spiraling.
Title says it all I think
Mostly here becouse it sounds like something they’d listen to
While this is a 90’s song it reminds me a lot of Gojo. Just the childish/cocky tone, the line “and then you told me how bad you had to suffer, is that really all you have to offer?” Like idk it just screams him to me.
And if I died right now what then
90’s song but Jesus Christ this one is even worse. “I wanna hold the hand inside you,I wanna take a breath that’s true” “you’ll come apart and you’ll go blind” banging my head against the wall
“And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too, I’ll see you in the dark side of the moon”
Also “the lunatic is in my head” good way to say there’s a curse inside your brain Geto
Here mostly becouse it’s an actual confirmed gay song but it’s still a bit satosugu
It’s just here becosue vibes
(1980s SatoSugu AU + 1990s Megumi AU Playlists)
omg omg you're like a musical angel. okay let's do it:
1. Eyes Without A Face - Billy Idol
This is the perfect 1984 sound to me!! Like, quintessential this is so perfect thank you. And yes, eyes theme, of course. But also...
woof 🥲 i can imagine suguru playing this song while he's having a Bad Time™ and thinking of satoru.........i am sad
2. (I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight - Cutting Crew
😢
Ugh, this is such a classic. Technically it's 1986 so......I can put it near the end of the playlist and it can be like a couple years in the future. So. Things are not going well for them in 1986.....
3. Sowing the Seeds of Love - Tears for Fears
Immediately yes.
So they're back together by 1989 and belting this at full volume down the highway. that's nice :)
(+ BONUS) Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears for Fears
I had to go back and see what TfF songs were out around '84 and
4. 21st Century (Digital Boy) - Bad Religion
Ooooh yeah I hear it, that line is so good. But......it's also great for Megumi, beating up some bullies lol. And it's 1994! that's my anchor year for him so that's perfect!
5. Love is a Battlefield - Pat Benatar
Okay, those lyrics hit so hard 😢 tell me I'm wrong, but I feel like Gojo would love Pat Benatar, but Geto would haaaate her lmao. Like Gojo would bring a tape into the car and convince Suguru to let him play it, but Suguru would be like, "don't leave that tape in my car." idk he's just not like other boys.
Also, very Gojo coded song 2 me. This came out in 1983, so I think everytime it comes on Gojo blasts the radio and sings along at top volume all by himself while Geto rolls his eyes in the drivers seat.
6. Fade Into You - Mazzy Star
🥺🥺🥺 I love this sooooong. Giving it to little proto-emo boy Megumi for timeline stability. Gojo can overhear it and have traumatic flashbacks or something
"I think it's strange you never knew" kill me
7. Brain Damage - Pink Floyd
Does Geto just have two full Pink Floyd tapes in his glove box?..........I mean probably
😢😢😢😢😢
"there's someone in my head but it's not me" I don't wanna talk about it.
8. Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've?) - The Buzzcocks
PERFECT. GAY TEEN ANGST. PERFECT.
No notes.
9. Because the Night - Patti Smith
Another Gojo belter. But this one grows on Geto and in a couple weeks he's belting word for word along with him. They love this song 🔥🔥🔥
---
I'm having so much fun 🥰 tyty the playlist is really coming along now
#stsg 80s au#satosugu#stsg#jjk 90s au#megumi fushiguro#i now have recommendations from my dad and my audiophile friend to work through#😁😁😁😁 this is fun

Here’s a bad and non exhaustive list of songs i associate with Will Graham (spotify playlist linked : https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4W3BvUjEF2yHAenne5QhRr?si=UPB9cEK8TZGL1ado5Mo7hA)
— almost all of Fiona Apple’s « When the pawn… » album, but especially Limp and I KNOW !! + Sullen Girl (he gets it)
— Dark Necessities by Red Hot Chili Peppers. (I needn’t explain methinks ://)
— Lana Del Rey’s Pretty when you cry (for the way his tears and agony are basically a psychopath dogwhistle throughout the show…), Art Deco (because he’s a work of art… though he’s such a Botticelli guy that renaissance would work better as a current) and Thunder (him as the narrator of the song)
— Killer by Phoebe Bridgers (self-explanatory)
— Hozier’s Eat your young (rwar) and Cherry wine (recurrent patterns of associating pain and love in relationships)
— Mazzy Star’s songs. He’s her she’s him. Blue light especially 💔 (but also Fade into you cause he faded into hannibal didn’t he?)
— MITSKI. Just mitski. Especially Cop Car (can’t tell me that the line « i get mean when I’m nervous like a bad dog » wasn’t written for his nasty emotionally stunted dog man ass) but also Humpty, Fireworks, A burning hill, Last words of a shooting star, A pearl (trauma and depression :/)
— cannot talk about Will cannibal Graham without RADIOHEAD. He’s THE emo male manipulator with his shitty fucking puppy eyes 👎👎👎👎 out of all the songs on this playlist he definitely listens to these (picked Weird fishes/arpeggi, Jigsaw falling into place, Nude, How to disappear completely, Just, Bullet proof… I wish i was(get it ??? Cause he got shot and also stabbed and also had his skull opened and his skin almost ripped from his face :33))
— Drinking by bôa… this is so him and his dad
— the smiths :/ the red flags keep piling up!!!! And they aint even heart shaped (pretty girls make graves cause he gets 0 pussy!!!)
— Hurt by NIN !! fuck yeah he listens to angsty rock music we get it already
— Strangelove by Depeche Mode cause he thinks hes so special with his silly little empathy gift but really he listens to the same faux subversive mainstream music (as he should) + the vibes are just very much similar to his own
— Jeff Buckley’s songs cause hes a fisherman. :3
— Deftones’ Cherry Waves is definitely the way the inside of his brain sounds like (prior the encephalitis era cause she was always a crazy grllll!!!)
— and lots of other songs >:))

Helluva: Intimacy headcanons with Stolas
Request: "Can I get sweet intimacy headcanons with Stolas and a female s/o? (Please listen to Fade into you by Mazzy Star for this, I guarantee it'll be inspiring for the vibe)" by anon
Note: Stolas deserves so much love! This man has my heart!
💗Masterlist | WIP Page
Stolas
Stolas CRAVES intimacy.
He wants it so bad that he often isn't sure how to go about getting it.
This often leads him to many awkward situations.
He's trying. SO HARD
But he means well.
"If you wanted to cuddle, Stolas, you could have just asked."
"Re-really?"
Stolas is used to having to convince Stella to do anything physical or romantic that he's blown away by your casual intimacy.
Not that his situation was ideal, as for many years, Stella and Stolas were able to make the best out of their marriage.
Especially considering the circumstances of it in the first place, with it being an arranged marriage and all.
You are well aware of his situation and are extremely empathetic and patient with him.
After Stolas never needed to really flirt or date per say with his arranged marriage. They was really no need to, as per Stella.
GIVE THIS MAN FLOWERS!
PLEASE!
He will not know what to say or how to react due to being overwhelmed with happiness and love.
Even if they're his least favorite, he will absolutely adore them!
"A-are these for me?" Stolas asked, eyes widening at the sight of the flowers in his hands.
"Yep." You grin.
"You got me flowers!?"
"Of course!" You smiled up at him, "I wanted to give you something nice!"
He will be giddy all night long just because of that.
Stolas is a big fan of casual touches.
He often loves to keep you close to him, even if just holding his hand.
It's simple, but it means the most to him that you want to be this close to him without sex being involved.
Stolas will try to make you a romantic meal without any help from his servants and such.
It's not because he knows how to cook.
This man has never cooked ever in his life.
"I hope that you're hungry!" Stolas said, before lifting the lid to the dish he had prepared, "Because I made you something special~"
"I'm sure that it'll be gr-what is that?!"
".....You don't like it...?"
"What? No! I-" You paused, sighing at the sight of Stolas' disappointed and sad expression. You glanced back to the plate sitting in front of you once again, sighing once again. "I love it, Stolas! I've never had someone cook for me before." You added.
"Well, go on try it!" Stolas said, "I did it all myself, you know. No help from anyone."
After that night, you took it upon yourself to plan a date night with Stolas, where you planned on cooking with him.
Stolas knows what you're up to with this date, but he's just so content with spending the evening with you, he doesn't care.
Stolas often loves to repay any and all favors by writing you romantic letters.
It's very old-fashioned, but Stolas saw a romantic movie character do this, and he's hell-bent on continually sending you romantic letters.
You adore them and keep every single one of them.
Once Stolas finds the stash of old letters, he makes it his mission to write you them more often.
You surprise him by writing one back once or twice, which he immediately gushes over when they arrive.
"I love you."
"I love you too, Stolas." You sighed, smiling up at him, "I always will."

my ultimate Sam and Dean are soulmates playlist | 61 songs, 3 hr 59 min
I started putting this together over my summer SPN re-watch, and I thought I'd share it with you all, so we can all cry over our Wincest feels together. It has all the usual cliché songs, and some of my own favourites. (Very country-heavy, so if that's not your thing proceed with caution.) I'm a writer, so lyrics are very important to me - I linked them for every song. All songs are individually YouTube linked, alternatively you can find the Spotify version above. I included some comments and explanations for all my choices, as well as quotes from the show. Happy listening! | Last updated: 18 November 2020
Carry On My Wayward Son by Supernatural: The Musical Cast // lyrics // Cliché and all that, but a good place to start.
Somewhere Only We Know by Lily Allen // lyrics // Even as children - as tumultuous and layered their relationship has always been - it was just the two of them, alone, in their own little world. I Found by Amber Run // lyrics // I found love where it wasn't supposed to be.
Fade Into You by Mazzy Star // lyrics // Unhealthily codependent Weecest vibes.
I Wanna Be Yours by Arctic Monkeys // lyrics // Secrets I have held in my heart / Are harder to hide than I thought. Something's Gotta Give by Christian Kane // lyrics // Wanting to get out of town as a metaphor for Dean wanting to act on his feelings for Sam? Yes, please. Christian Kane being a country god? Absolutely. The fact that this man was actually on SPN as Dean’s freaking love interest, and Jensen and him got to sing together still makes me the happiest person on this planet.
Don't You Wanna Fall by Frankie Ballard // lyrics // So, I love the lines Fall down here where an angel should know better than / To walk around this world with me, because god, Dean so often thinks he belongs in Hell, and is terrified of forcing his little brother into anything he doesn’t want. But still, he can’t stop himself: Don’t you wanna fall? (Shoutout to any Destiel shippers out there, because what a perfect song for you guys too, wow.) Thinking of You by Christian Kane // lyrics // Dean, just before Sam leaves for Stanford. (Link is for the Leverage version, because I love that show, and because Eliot Spencer is an angel. Funnily enough, Alona Tal was actually in that very episode, and did actually sing this song - you can find that here.) Hold On by Limp Bizkit // lyrics // I'm waiting for you, I know you're leaving / I'll still adore you, you never need me. LOST BOY by Troye Sivan // lyrics // Thinking about little Sammy’s stolen college admissions guide. Arms of a Stranger by Niall Horan // lyrics // Some jealous!Dean, while Sam is at Stanford angst.
Walking Away by Lifehouse // lyrics // Silence is all we have to give / And the memories of a life I wish we'd lived.
San Francisco by Niall Horan // lyrics // Listen, it’s a song about pining and not being able to let go and love in San Francisco. I mean, where do you expect my mind to go? Stanford Wincest all the way. How Did You Know? by Jedward // lyrics // I don’t wanna hear a bad word about Jedward, they are good lads. It’s a cheesy song, but hey, I love it. Sam comes back. Well, here I am / I couldn't stay gone. Drive by Halsey // lyrics // All we do is drive / All we do is think about the feelings that we hide. And the California never felt like home to me line! So perfect. "We made a hell of a team back there." (01x01 Pilot) Belong by X Ambassadors // lyrics // This is where Sam belongs, really. Riding shotgun, in his brother’s car, on the open road. Link is a fanvid that makes me feel things. Go and watch it, because it’s everything.
You Could Be Happy by Snow Patrol // lyrics // “Sam, you were right. You gotta do your own thing. You gotta live your own life.” (01x11 Scarecrow) Do the things that you always wanted to / Without me there to hold you back, don't think, just do.
Big Black Car by Gregory Alan Isakov // lyrics // "Who was that?" "My brother." "What did he say?" "Goodbye." That soft, disbelieving, confused look on Sam's face when Dean tells him he's proud of him. When it turns out Dean loves him enough to let him go. It should make him feel happy and free, it should make him loathe his childhood, defiance should fill him to the brim. Instead it makes him run straight back to Dean. (01x11 Scarecrow) Hey Brother by Avicii // lyrics // Faith. (01x12) Link is a fanvid, because reasons. Oh, if the sky comes falling down, for you / There's nothing in this world I wouldn't do. Sober Me Up by Frankie Ballard // lyrics // Sam always seems to make the world all fall into place. (Sort of 02x03 Bloodlust vibes?) But baby when you kiss me all the demons seem to disappear.
Always Gold by Radical Face // lyrics // “Killing this demon comes first, before me, before everything.” “No, sir. Not before everything.” (02x07 The Usual Suspects) And they said you were the crooked kind / And that you'd never have no worth / But you were always gold to me. Sold My Soul by Zakk Wylde // lyrics // Bit on the nose, but my god, how fucking real. (02x22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2) Let Me Sign by Kirk Matthews // lyrics // "Well, then let it end!" & "I'm gonna take care of you." (02x22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2) Follow You by Bring Me The Horizon // lyrics // “I mean, you sacrifice everything for me. Don’t you think I’d do the same for you? You’re my big brother. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for you.” (02x22 All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 2) Say Something by A Great Big World // lyrics // "I just wish you'd drop the show and be my brother again. Cause... just cause." (03x07 Fresh Blood) Take Me To Church by Hozier // lyrics // “This obsession to save Dean? The way you two keep sacrificing yourselves for each other? […] Dean’s your weakness. And the bad guys know it, too.” (03x11 Mystery Spot) Outlaws of Love by Adam Lambert // lyrics // "You're my weak spot. And I'm yours." (03x16 No Rest for the Wicked) Everywhere we go we're looking for the sun / Nowhere to grow old, we're always on the run / They say we'll rot in Hell, but I don't think we will / They've branded us enough, "Outlaws of Love". Wanted Dead Or Alive by Bon Jovi // lyrics // Well, I had to include this one, for obvious reasons. (03x16 No Rest for the Wicked) In Other Words by Ben Kweller // lyrics // Dean's going to Hell. Sam's not okay. In his eyes I see the fear. Real With Me by Cady Groves // lyrics // Dean is not dealing well with remembering Hell. Sam is upset that he's not opening up. And it was never about what you were not / But I don't know how much longer I can hold on. Devil's Backbone by The Civil Wars // lyrics // None of it matters. Leaving for Stanford, choosing Ruby, the demon blood, that he’s Hell’s chosen. Dean will always come for his brother, no matter what. Stay by Florida Georgia Line // lyrics // Sam leaves. It's fucked up. "Hey, you, uh... wanna take the Impala?" Dean doesn’t trust him, not like he used to, but he would say anything to make him stay. (05x02 Good God, Y’all) Hotel Room by Calum Scott // lyrics // They die in a motel room. They find out they share a Heaven. Sam can't find the words to explain. He wishes Dean would just give him time. (05x04 The End) So I kind of wrote a ficlet about this...? Read it if you fancy. Here Tonight by Brett Young // lyrics // The Wincestiest Wincest song to ever Wincest. The lyrics! Sometimes they can just take a minute to sit on the hood of the Impala and watch the stars, Apocalypse be damned.
I Hold On by Dierks Bentley // lyrics // “Sam, it’s okay. It’s okay, I’m here, I’m here. I’m not gonna leave you.” (05x22 Swan Song) Dean believes in his brother, and I’m a sucker for pick-up truck metaphors Lifeboats by Snow Patrol // lyrics // The look on Dean's face when he hugs Sam, when he realises that Sam's back, that he's alive. (06x01 Exile on Main St.) Potentially also some Purgatory vibes. Wild Horses by The Rolling Stones // lyrics // The moment Sam turned up on his doorstep, there was no question he'd choose him. Choose him over Lisa and Ben. Choose him over everyone. “But the minute he walked through that door, I knew. It was over. You two have the most unhealthy, tangled-up, crazy thing I've ever seen. And as long as he's in your life, you're never gonna be happy.” (06x06 You Can’t Handle The Truth) Heavydirtysoul by twenty one pilots // lyrics // “Pick one... Sam’s soul or Adam’s.” “Sam.” (06x11 Appointment in Samarra)
H.O.L.Y. by Florida Georgia Line // lyrics // Oh, this song. A bit of religious irony and whatnot, but my god. The lyrics are everything. You're the healing hands where it used to hurt immediately makes me think of how Dean helped Sam turn the pain from his scar on his palm into “stone number one, and build on it”. (07x02 Hello, Cruel World) I mean, Sam can't even tell what's real anymore, but he trusts his brother. Blindly and with everything he has, because that's who he is. But then there’s also Dean making his promise in the church, and Sam choosing him over dying in 09x01 (I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here). God. Just. I love this song for Sam and Dean.
Through The Dark by One Direction // lyrics // "We'll figure it out, okay? Just like we always do." (08x23 Sacrifice) Leave Out All The Rest by Linkin Park // lyrics // Sam is okay with sacrificing himself. He is ready to die. When my time comes / Forget the wrong that I've done. Demolition Lovers by My Chemical Romance // lyrics // “There is nothing, past or present, that I would put in front of you... I need you to see that." (08x23 Sacrifice) Okay, but look at the lyrics, and try and convince me this song is not about Sam and Dean. Love Will Tear Us Apart by Fall Out Boy // lyrics // "You wanna know what I confessed in there?" (08x23 Sacrifice) TALK ME DOWN by Troye Sivan // lyrics // The look in Sam’s eyes changes, his face falls. "How do I stop?" He chooses Dean like he always does. (08x23 Sacrifice) Brother by Kodaline // lyrics // “Come on. You and Dean? That’s something special, don’t you think?” (09x08 Rock and a Hard Place) Link is a gorgeous fanvid, go watch it and cry. Little Lion Man by Mumford & Sons // lyrics // Dean really messed up this time. Gadreel fall out stuff. Sam breaks up with him in a motel car park in Wisconsin. (09x12 Sharp Teeth)
better off by Jeremy Zucker & Chelsea Cutler // lyrics // "Something's broken here, Dean." (09x12 Sharp Teeth) & "No, Dean, I wouldn't." (09x13 The Purge)
I Can't Go On Without You by KALEO // lyrics // Sam taking Dean’s body home, laying him on his bed, drinking by himself in the dark. (09x23 Do You Believe in Miracles) I Won't Give Up by Noah Guthrie // lyrics // "I am going to save my brother." (10x01 Black) Sam never gives up on Dean. Brother by NEEDTOBREATHE ft. Gavin DeGraw // lyrics // “I never even said thank you, so…” “You don’t ever have to say that, not to me.” (10x04 Paper Moon) Link is another beautiful fanvid, because I can’t help myself. Sittin' Pretty by Florida Georgia Line // lyrics // Sam's sunshine and he’s endless planes of warm skin, soft long hair, and sometimes Dean looks at him. Really looks at him. (No, okay, but the Chevy line really made it for me.) Blood Brothers by Luke Bryan // lyrics // "I don’t need a symbol to remind me how I feel about my brother.” and "The two of us against the world!” "What she said.” (10x05 Fan Fiction) I don’t know, country songs just make me think of Sam and Dean, okay.
I Will Follow You Into The Dark by Daniela Andrade // lyrics // “This is my life. I love it. But I can’t do it without my brother. I don’t want to do it without my brother. And if he’s gone, then I don’t…” (10x18 Book of the Damned)
Golden by Fall Out Boy // lyrics // Dean is so so broken. “No, there is no other way, Sam. I’m sorry.” (10x23 Brother’s Keeper)
Church by Fall Out Boy // lyrics // This whole song screams Sam and Dean to me, and initially I thought of Sam’s Wall breaking down, but then I got stuck on the lines And if death is the last appointment / Then we're all just sitting in the waiting room / I am just a human trying to avoid my certain doom and that’s so clearly Dean killing Death, unable to murder his little brother in the end, because his devotion to Sam runs too deep. (10x23 Brother’s Keeper) In which the SPN writers and Pete Wentz really should get together and discuss over-the-top religious imagery. You are doomed but just enough. Right Back Home by Lifehouse // lyrics // “We are home.“ (11x04 Baby) Be There by Seafret // lyrics // "Bring him back. Bring him back and take me instead." (11x17 Red Meat) You're my way out / You're my way through / And I can't, I can't / Be without you.
Only the Brave by Louis Tomlinson // lyrics // “I need him, he needs me.“ (11x23 Alpha and Omega) With or Without You by U2 // lyrics // The absolute poetic tragedy of 12x09 (First Blood). The way they don’t even have time to really look at each other after six weeks apart, that they are both ready to die for each other without a moment of hesitation.
I Won't Mind by ZAYN // lyrics // “I'm good with who I am. I'm good with who you are. Because our lives? They're ours and maybe I'm too damn old to want to change that.” (14x13 Lebanon)
Fine Line by Harry Styles // lyrics // "Just us.” (15x19 Inherit the Earth)

read more for some lyrics. click here to listen.
BLUE LIGHT by MAZZY STAR: There's a ship / That sails by my window There's a ship that sails on by / There's a world under it / I think I see it / Sailing away / I think it's sailing / Miles crashing me by / Crashing me by / Crashing me by
This is the song Wren chose to describe themselves; it really speaks to that feeling of not really belonging, not even really being alive that they’re often caught up in. As if life is a wave crashing them by.
I’M SO AFRAID by FLEETWOOD MAC: I been alone / All the years / So many ways to count the tears / I never change / I never will / I'm so afraid the way I feel / Days when the rain and the sun are gone / Black as night / Agony's torn at my heart too long / So afraid / Slip and I fall and I die
A bit dramatic, but this song speaks to Wren deeply. Also, Fleetwood Mac.
LAST WORDS OF A SHOOTING STAR by MITSKI: I always wanted to die clean and pretty / But I'd be too busy on working days / So I am relieved that the turbulence wasn't forecasted / I couldn't have changed anyways / I am relieved that I'd left my room tidy / Goodbye
In this song Mitski sings as if she’s in a plane crashing. Wren would react similarly, think about how nice it is that they’ve left their room tidy for the ones they leave behind, reflect on their life with a sadness.
TURN OUT THE LIGHTS by JULIEN BAKER: There's a hole in the drywall still not fixed / I just haven't gotten around to it / And besides, I'm starting to get used to the gaps [...] I can't tell the difference when I'm all alone / Is it real or a dream, which is worse? / Can you help me? / I just wanted to go to sleep / When I turn out the lights / There's no one left / Between myself and me
That feeling when you come home and suddenly there’s nothing to distract you of who you are and how you feel and god. This song fucks me up, and it does the same to Wren.
17 by JADE BIRD: I say less than I should / I say more than I mean / I would try if I could, but I'm all I can be / If I had more I would change the cover, you see / I have walls that have stood / Before you ever loved me
Wren vs. the endless struggle of trying to connect to people when they’ve trapped themselves behind their walls.
MY MOTTO by JADE BIRD: And that's my motto / Don't let 'em near enough / To let me down / All this love ever does is / Break me now
Once again: Wren vs. the endless struggle of trying to connect to people.
FIRE by AMY MAY ELLIS: Today, my mind is working in a peculiar way / Today, I'm doubting every single word I say / Today, so please excuse my silence / So please excuse my silence, so please excuse me [...] But I’ve got fire / Got far more fire
Wren may be a MESS, but they do have fire, and drive, and potential. It’s not all sad, depressing shit.
ABBEY by MITSKI: I am hungry / I have been hungry / I was born hungry
Famine gang square up! This entire song is Wren. Makes me cry.
HUNGER by FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE: I thought that love was a kind of emptiness / And at least I understood then, the hunger I felt / And I didn't have to call it loneliness / We all have a hunger
Love as an emptiness. Goes feral. (Famine gang square up!)
FORWARDS BECKON REBOUND by ADRIANNE LENKER: Mystery of lack / Stabbing stars through my back / Forwards, beckon, rebound [...] Show me pictures that hang in your house / Pictures that hang in your mouth / Candescent insects / Crosses and fishnecks
A lot of Vibes in this song. Show me pictures that hang in your house: Wren would ask this.
HEY MOON by JOHN MAUS: Hey moon, it's just you and me tonight / Everyone else is asleep / Hey moon, if I was to fall / I won't fall so deep / Though I doubt I'm gonna / You can wake me up if you wanna / I would hate for you to hang there all alone / The whole night through
A song for the moon? Yeah. Wren. Wren would stay awake so the moon isn’t alone.
#& character development.#this is the playlist i started when i wrote wren's app!!! and have been adding onto ever since#& task.

Okay! I have a burning question for you, my dude. Music is my life, and I wanna know what kind of music the OPM casts listen to. Thanks, my guy!
I had a feeling this would be inevitable lol. I don’t really know a whole lot about music or genres or anything like that so I’m just gonna give you a rundown of each character individually and some song recs along with that just to smooth things out a little. Thanks for your ask, by the way! ❤️ Now my playlists will be put to good use.
A Brief Rundown of the Major OPM Characters’ Music Tastes:
Blast: hc that he doesn’t even have ears since he never fucking LISTENS
Terrible Tornado: Stuff that makes her feel powerful. Loud vocals and good instrumentals. Also, she’s a little angsty since she’s saltier than the gotdamn Pacific almost all of the time. (Recs: Florence and the Machine - How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, Susanne Sundfør - Delirious, Florence and the Machine - What Kind of Man, Kali Uchis - Dead to Me, Let’s Eat Grandma - Falling Into Me)
Fubuki: some of that real classy shit. Slow songs that are nice to just have a cup of tea with. Nothing too meaty or fast-paced, she enjoys taking a moment to breathe every once and a while since life gets pretty hectic when you’re managing a gang of some 30 hooligans. (Recs: Wes - Midnight Low, any song from Lana Del Rey’s entire discography lol, Florence and the Machine - Grace, The Marìas - I Don’t Know You, Yellow House - Ain’t Gonna Call, Feng Suave - Toking, Dozing)
Silverfang: Stuff from his time. I hc that he was a bit of a party animal back in his prime so he’s gotta have those grooves. Disco to the extremo. Also, another hc: Garou absolutely hates his music. He would play it during training and Garou would contemplate homicide. (Recs: Frankie Valli - Grease, The Edgar Winter Group - Free Ride, KC and the Sunshine Band - I’m Your Boogie Man, Matthew Wilder - Break My Stride, The Main Ingredient - Everybody Plays the Fool, Andrea True Connection - More, More, More)
Bomb: save as Silverfang, although I hc that Bomb was a little more of a nerd growing up. Still, he never missed out on a good party. (Additional Recs: KC and the Sunshine Band - Get Down Tonight, The Trammps - Disco Inferno, Tierra - Together, Cornelius Bros and Sister Rose - Too Late to Turn Back Now)
Atomic Samurai: Old shit. Shit older than Silverfang. He’s really not that old, but his soul is fucking ancient and he’s got that classic “grrr music these days sucks” kind of shithead attitude. (Recs: Jim Croce - Time in a Bottle, Dion - Runaround Sue, The Carpenters - The End of the World, The Band - The Weight)
Child Emperor: Upbeat synth. Stuff to listen to while he’s working on his machines and whatnot. Probably has meaty beats to keep him in tune with what he’s doing, like working around a clock. Probably some groovy citypop in there too. (Recs: Taeko Ohnuki - 4:00 AM, Junko Ohashi - Telephone Number, Tatsuro Yamashita - Magic Ways, Hiroyuki Sawano - NEXUS, Superfly - Kakusei, Mariya Takeuchi - Plastic Love)
Metal Knight: Intrumentals that Disney villains listen to. Deep, dark shit that makes you feel sad. He probably feeds off of negative emotion. What a toolbag. (Recs: Lucas King - Sociopath, Abel Korzeniowski- Table for Two, Max Richter - Never Goodbye, Max Richter - She Remembers, Evelyn Stein - Quiet Resource, Mac Quayle - Adagio in G Minor)
King: video game soundtracks, obviously. Might be some electro funk in there too, as a treat. (Recs: Metal Gear Solid 3 OST - Snake Eater, Mick Gordon - Rip and Tear, Xenoblade Chronicles OST - Main Theme, Persona 5 OST - Last Surprise, Daft Punk - Verdis Quo, Toby Fox - Hopes and Dreams, Disasterpeace - Prologue, iamthekidyouknowwhatimean - Run, Darren Korb - Old Friends)
Zombieman: Dad Music. Old rock that makes you wanna rail some lines of white thunder and dance on top of a car. He’d be reluctant to try out new stuff but does so nevertheless. Just a little bit of weird alternative here and there. (Recs: Poison - Unskinny Bop, Mötley Crüe - Dr. Feelgood, Black Sabbath - War Pigs, Def Leppard - Animal, CRX - Walls, MGMT - Little Dark Age, Pink Floyd - Money, Queens of the Stone Age - Villains of Circumstance)
Drive Knight: Dark synth, obviously. Need I say more? (Recs: El Tigr3 - She Swallowed Burning Coals, Trevor Something - Enjoy the Silence, Greg Drombrowski - Devour, GUNSHIP - Woken Furies, GUNSHIP - Thrasher, Carpenter Brut - Invasion A.D., Kavinsky - Nightcall)
Pig God: this guy probably just listens to ASMR of people eating food lol.
Superalloy Darkshine: Upbeat stuff that’s good for exercise; loving those new jams along with some of the old. He’s got a pretty groovy style. (Diane Ross - Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, Saint Motel - Puzzle Pieces, CRUISR - All Over, Barry White - Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up, Sade - Kiss of Life)
Watchdog Man: 10 hour loop of wolves howling on a summer night.
Flashy Flash: classical. Some nice instrumentals to listen to while training. Stuff that preferably doesn’t have any or very little lyrics so it’s not too busy on his ears while he’s fantasizing about killing someone. (Recs: Vaughn Williams - The Lark Ascending, Debussy - Rêverie, Grieg - Peace of the Woods, André Laplante - Une Barque sur L’Ocean)
Metal Bat: Modern alternative. A little bit harder than say, Mumen and Kama, but not as hard as Zombieman or Death Gatling. He’s that middle ground where he’s still got some real bangers, but Zenko can listen as well. He’ll play this stuff loudly as he’s doing chores and working out, no headphones ever. It gets pretty annoying. (Recs: Foals - Exits, The Blue Stones - Black Holes, Solid Ground, CRX - Broken Bones, Jungle - Happy Man, The Strokes - Reptilia, We Are Trees - Girlfriend)
Genos: synth. But not just any synth, some heavy, fast-paced synth that’s just like him: speedy, relentless, and powerful. He listens to shit that’ll make you wanna get up and start killing Terminators. Probably. There’s some other synths in the mix too because we love a three-dimensional king. (Recs: Carpenter Brut - Division Ruine, The Protomen - I Still Believe, Carpenter Brut - Leather Teeth, Gunship - Tech Noir, TWRP - Phantom Racer, Le Castle Vania - Red Circle)
Tanktop Master: Dad music but the type of dad music that makes you think your dad was a sappy nerd back in the day. Long tracks that are good for workouts. (Tears for Fears - Woman in Chains, Pink Floyd - Us and Them, Duran Duran - Ordinary World, Billy Idol - Eyes without a Face, A Flock of Seagulls - I Ran, The Alan Parsons Project - Eye in the Sky, Tears for Fears - Sowing the Seeds of Love)
Puri-Puri Prisoner: Pop. Dance music. He doesn’t really get to listen to a lot of music in prison, so he holds on to whatever he can and savors every second of it. (Coldplay - Talk, Bruno Mars - Runaway Baby, Lady Gaga - Bad Romance, Flo Milli - Beef Flomix, Doja Cat - Say So)
Mumen Rider: Hes a lighthearted, soft boy. Likes some fluffy indie tunes. It helps to motivate him when working out or doing hero stuff. He might need to cry every once in a while though, so there’s some sad songs in the mix too. (Recs: Varsity - The Dogs Only Listen to Him, The The - This is the Day, Amarante - Don’t Look Back, Alvvays - Saved by a Waif, The Monkees - As We Go Along, Acid Ghost - Hide my Face, Mogwai - Take Me Somewhere Nice)
Sonic: same as Flash. He’s a little more hip with the times however, so he’s got some more groovy, electronic instrumentals to listen to in addition to some elegant stuff and isn’t opposed to having a little bit of lyrics sprinkled in there as well. In fact, he’s not opposed to uppity pop either. He thinks dancing is frivolous but he secretly does it when he thinks nobody is looking. (Additional Recs: Odesza - Bloom, Pretty Lights - One Day They’ll Know [Odesza Remix], BØRNS - Electric Love, Hembree - Culture, The Cinematic Orchestra - Arrival of the Birds)
Garou: same as Metal Bat. Bang let him have a little MP3 player during his time at the dojo and has since collected a few songs on there. They’re very near and dear to his heart since it’s one of the few good things that came from his absolute disaster of a childhood. (Additional Recs: Foals - Inhaler, CRX - Slow Down, Deep Sea Arcade - Close to Me, Gorillaz - Empire Ants, The Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger, Glass Animals - Take A Slice)
Death Gatling: Shit your old Vietnam-vet grandpa would blast on the back of his F150. He gives me self-righteous asshole vibes, if I’m honest. Like, don’t get me wrong, I like Death Gatling, but he seems like the type of trailer park-dwelling sewer rat to carry a revolver into a Walmart for “self defense” and that’s probably the type of music he listens to, too. (Recs: Megadeth - Trust, Megadeth - Angry Again, Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son, Glen Campbell - Southern Nights, Mötley Crüe - Kickstart My Heart, Quiet Riot - Cum on Feel the Noize)
One-Shotter: I hard hc that he had an emo phase he never quite grew out of. He doesn’t quite listen to emo anymore but he’s still into that alternative shit. Homeboy also likes some slow tunes every once and a while because he’s an emotional dude who’s not afraid of a good cry. (Recs: Anything from Blink-182, Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know?, MGMT - When You Die, Mazzy Star - Fade Into You, Cigarettes After Sex - Dreaming of You, Yon Ort - Other Matter)
Lightning Max: Same as Genos but without the terminator-killing. Fast-paced stuff because he’s a fast lightning dude. A little more upbeat because he’s not as much as an edgelord as Genos, however. (Additional Recs: Carpenter Brut - Hang’em All, The Flaming Lips - Do You Realize, Worn Tin - Sensitivity, B.E.R. - The Night Begins to Shine, Martin Hall - Different Kind of Love)
Stinger: he’s all about that FUNK! Stuff that gets him moving! Stuff that makes him wanna dance! (Recs: Daft Punk - Doin’ it Right, TWRP - Body Image, Wild Cherry - Play that Funky Music, Chemise - She Can’t Love You, Saga - Wind Him Up, Saga - On the Loose, TWRP - All Night Forever)
Okamaitachi: they give me electro vibes! New, modern shit that’s good to dance to or to just sit down and have a listen! Also, some shit that’ll probably play in a coming-of-age teen movie or something. They don’t really vibe with heavy music and that’s alright, babey! Keeping it light and bouncy. (Recs: Tei Shi - Bassically, Varsity - Must Be Nice, Class Actress - Weekend, CHVRCHES - Richard Pryor, Alvvays - Marry Me, Archie, Sobs - Telltale Signs, Goth Babe - Sometimes, ALASKALASKA - Meateater)
Iaian: Nice, low tunes that are good for meditation and to be used for background noise during training sessions. He never really sits down to listen to music, it’s always in the background of something else he’s doing so he prefers to have some soft beats that don’t really interfere with his senses. Tunes so quiet, he sometimes uses them as lullabies; especially since the trauma of losing his arm has since made it hard to sleep. (Recs: Boy Scouts - Saddest Boy, Susanne Sundfør - Mantra, Vashiti Bunyan - If I Were the Same but Different, Starman Jr. - Blue Fairy, Patrick Watson - Je te Laisserai des Mots, Sibylle Baier - I Lost Something in the Hills)
Bushidrill: same as Atomic Samurai just without the shitty attitude. He’s happy to listen to some newer stuff, he just doesn’t like it and that’s okay, baby! Probably some classy shit your wise old grandpa would listen to. (Recs: Dean Martin - Volare, Dion - The Wanderer, Peppino Gagliardi - Che Vuole Questra Musica Stasera, anything from Luis Miguel lol, Franco Micalizzi - Sadness Theme)
Amai Mask: probably just listens to his own music like a putz. If not, he’s listening to the sound equivalent of glittering diamonds. He’s probably got this shit playing at the end of a long day while he’s chilling in a hot bath or something. (Recs: Fergie - Glamorous, Rita Ora - Hot Right Now, Lana Del Rey - Freak, Lana Del Rey - Art Deco, Tame Impala - Feels Like We Only Go Backwards)
Saitama: He doesn’t listen to music much anymore, sadly. He did, however, have a killer motivational mix to get him through his vigorous training prior to becoming a hero. (Recs: Paul Engemann - Push it to the Limit, Journey - Don’t Stop Believin’, College & Electric Youth - A Real Hero, Joe Esposito - You’re the Best Around, Survivor - Eye of the Tiger, The Bee Gees - Nights on Broadway)
Here’s the playlist with all of these songs in order (mostly):
It’s on YouTube because I’m allergic to Spotify. I’ve got a doctor’s note. Also, all of my other playlists are on my little profile thingy so if you want to listen to my pile then go right ahead.
Thanks for your ask, my dude! ❤️ this took up ALL of my energy lol but it was fun.

4 + 25 for the music asks!!
You bet! <3
4. what’s an album that really Hit you this year
I already gushed about Maximo Park, so I'll talk about another release I enjoyed: Glowing in the Dark by Django Django. My goodness, I'm a big fan of theirs and there's just something about this album that really reminds me of being 23? The year I got out of uni and indie music at that time was super spangly and sparkling. It's also really forward sounding, as DD tend to be. So yeah. I'm a big fan.
25. what songs best wraps up your year? (doesnt have to be lyrics just go off vibes emotion sound and whatnot)
Too many. But here's 4:
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You (this is going to sound very sad, but this was the song I had on repeat as I finished the edits on the last chapter of my first multi-chapter fic, Forever Live and Die, so it has like... a sentimental value, as well as being one of my favourite songs ever. I had to include it here)
The Futureheads - Skip to the End (they're one of my favourite bands and will feature on my annual vibes list until the day I die. This song resonates because 2020/2021 were tough years... for everyone)
Blue Oyster Cult - Godzilla (I go out running and I like to listen to hard rock and metal when I go out running because it makes me feel powerful. This song this year made me feel powerful in a year where I otherwise felt pretty blah - and also not like my old knees were going to give out)
Ghost - Mary on a Cross (Ghost are my favourite modern rock band. I think they're outstanding. Their releases continue to bowl me over, I've never heard a band so catchy, so fun, so dynamic. And their stage presence and overall brand? Outstanding. Tobias Forge is a genius. Knocks it out the park every time. This is a 2019 release but I continued to listen to it this year so it gave me major 2021 vibes, also because the lyrics make me Laugh Out Loud, seriously, and I really needed lots of laughs this year)

Picks of December 2019
Hello! Here are some of my music, movie, and other art picks of the final month of the decade! This year I’ve really been getting into 90s rock, permanent wave, slowcore, and punk rock. This month especially I’ve been interested in the music of the 70s and 90s acoustic songs. It’s been really cool seeing my taste in things progress to where they are now and I’m excited to see what else I find in the new year! Without further or do, here’s what I’ve been vibing with this month. :)
Music:
1. Gut Feeling/(Slap Your Mammy) - DEVO
youtube
After rewatching the movie 20th Century Women for the first time in many months, I had a resurgence of my love for the Talking Heads, Black Flag, and the Buzzcocks, and a newfound love for DEVO. My dad when I first got into the Talking Heads at the tender age of about 12 or 13 told me about this band called DEVO. He saw them live for the first time when he was about 17 or 18. Anyways, I’ve grown up with them in a sense but never really paid attention to the work they did. I’m glad I finally decided to give a listen to their debut album “Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO!” It’s led me down a rabbit hole of discovering new music and the culture of the 70s (which I’ve come to hold close to my heart). This song has become a sort of anthem for me. I’ve spent countless hours listening to it on loop and having dance parties with myself. The intro comes in subtly leaving you excited for what is to come. After an astounding 2 minutes of heavy drums, keys and a guitar riff that will remain in your head for days, the lyrics come in heavy “Something about the way you taste, makes me want to clear my throat” making it impossible to resist the urge to jump up and down shouting along with the band. Truly a great song would definitely recommend.
Other DEVO songs I recommend: Uncontrollable Urge and Jurisdiction of Love
2. St. Ides Heaven - Elliott Smith
youtube
There really isn’t much to say that hasn’t already been said about Elliott Smith. In my opinion, he is one of the greatest songwriters of all time. His haunting lyrics on this song, in particular, have stuck with me this month and this is yet another song I’ve had playing on repeat lately. It is simple in production and instrumentation but I think that’s what makes it beautiful.
Other Elliott Smith Songs I recommend: Whatever (Folk song in C), Miss Misery, Happiness/The Gondola Man, I Don’t Think I’m Ever Gonna Figure it Out, and Condor Ave
3. Halah - Mazzy Star
youtube
The music of Mazzy Star/ Hope Sandoval has really been there for me this year. There’s not much to say other than this song is beautiful beyond compare. It is the first track off of my favorite Mazzy Star project, She Hangs Brightly. I would definitely recommend this song and band to everyone.
Other Mazzy Star songs I recommend: Blue Flower, Fade Into You, and Rose Blood
4. Pop Queen - Noise Addict
youtube
This is an acoustic ballad by 90′s Australian indie rock band, Noise Addict. I haven’t done too much research on the band but from what I know, they were a group of thirteen-year-olds led by lead singer/songwriter Ben Lee. This song, in particular, Pop Queen, is a cute, very raw and very unproduced single with simple yet enticing and creative lyrics. It was the lyrics of their songs that really got me attached to the band. There are many references to other bands I enjoy like the pixies and pavement in their songs as well as what it feels like to be a teenager, something I can relate to as of this moment in time. (I’ve only listened to this ep, Young & Jaded, but I expect to like most of their other songs as well.)
Other Noise Addict songs I recommend: Wish I was Him
5. Beechwood Park - The Zombies
youtube
The Zombies are yet another band my dad loves. I remember him buying Zombies CDs when I was younger so back in September I decided to check them out. I fell instantly in love with their album, Begin Here. This month I decided to make playlists dedicated to my favorite songs from the decades 1960s-1990s. While searching through my library of saved songs I came across this beauty. I hadn’t listened to this song in probably about a year so I decided to listen to it again and it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made this month. The zombies make these incredible psychedelic songs and I think Beechwood park is now my new favorite. I definitely recommend this song to everyone. (Especially when you’re driving late at night, this song feels extra special)
Other Zombies songs I recommend: She’s Not There, The Way I Feel Inside, and Going Out of My Head
6. Like Dylan in the Movies - Belle & Sebastian
https://youtu.be/3Sf4B8aercg
A friend of mine back in September introduced me to the band, Belle & Sebastian. This month, I was lucky enough to get two of their albums, The Boy With the Arab Strap and If You’re Feeling Sinister, on vinyl. I quickly fell back in love with Like Dylan in the Movies and it’s become a new favorite.
Other Belle & Sebastian songs I recommend: She’s Losing it, Is it Wicked Not to Care, Get Me Away from Here, I’m Dying, and The Boy Done Wrong Again
7. Androgynous Mind - Sonic Youth
https://youtu.be/FvpbB8g0e64
Now, I’m not about to sit here and tell you that this song is any good. In fact, it’s really just Thurston Moore screaming “hey hey it’s okay” over and over again, but I’ve come to really enjoy listening to it. I truly believe Sonic Youth is a band for everybody. Their entire body of work is extremely diverse, experimental, and different. If you don’t like one song keep exploring their discography and you’ll probably find something you’ll enjoy eventually. For me personally, I love their albums EVOL, Daydream Nation, and Sister the most. Back to Androgynous Mind, however, this is a punchy punk tune that really gets you in the mood to bang your head. If you’re into noise rock/punk and just like music that makes you want to move, this song is for you. However, if you’re more into pop-y music, maybe skip this song.
Other Sonic Youth songs I recommend: Schizophrenia, Shadow of a Doubt, Teen Age Riot, The Diamond Sea - Radio Edit, and Incinerate
Movies & TV:
This month I was lucky enough to see quite a few movies that stuck with me.
1. Honey Boy (2019)
Let me tell you, I was really, really looking forward to this movie. Over the summer I watched every Shia LaBeouf movie I could get my hands on. He became one of my favorite actors and I loved learning more about his story. Noah Jupe portrayed a young version of Shia under the name “Otis.” He stole the show. His acting in this movie was absolutely incredible and I’m now a huge fan. Overall this movie was shot beautifully and extremely well written. A new favorite
Other Shia LaBeouf movies I recommend: American Honey and Holes
2. 20th Century Women (2016)
I watched this movie for the first time around the time it was initially released. This is the movie that introduced me to the work of Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwing and Annette Benning. Three incredible women whose work I admire very much. The story is about a young boy named Jamie growing up in the year 1970s. We see him go through the struggles of growing up without a father, falling in love, and just, in general, being a teenager. It is a very powerful movie that I connected to instantly upon watching it for the first time. It was recently added to Netflix so I decided to watch it again and once more I’ve become obsessed. 10/10 would recommend.
3. Bojack Horseman (2014-present)
To be completely honest, I wasn’t expecting to like this show, let alone binge all 6 seasons in a span of 2 weeks. Another good friend of mine recommended it to me and I’m very glad I trusted her judgment. This show was unexpectedly deep and tackled subjects I didn’t think any tv show would ever cover. As someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, I found comfort in Bojack’s character and his struggles with mental health and life problems. This is show is very important and I’m very excited for the series finale to be released.
Alright! That’s it for this month, this year, and this decade! I’ll be sure to write up some more things in January. I think I’m planning on making two posts a month of what I’m listening to and watching. This was fun.
