Kai held the letter in his hand. He read over the information over and over. It was correct but he still read it again and again. Across the top was printed ‘Request for Transfer.’ He walked the busy halls filled with hunters milling about. Getting new assignments, submitting paper work, and chatting. Stray eyes made him shrink into his jacket. They weren’t looking at you, he told himself. Seeing a group laugh as he walked passed still made him pick up his stride, bangs hiding his gaze.

Making it to the set of glass windows with cutouts, he walked up to one of the workers finishing some writing. The man looked up, expectant, and suddenly Kai felt sheepish as he slowly slid the paper through the opening at the bottom. The man took it as his hand held where the wrinkles on the sides were. He didn’t know where to look as the man reviewed the sheet and settled to the laminated notice on the counter.

“I...I’m thinking of transferring from the Asia branch,” he admitted into the phone. On the other side he could hear Daza kick up her feet, “About time.”

About time she said. Was it really that obvious? Or was it just Daza being Daza?

“So where are you going?”

“Huh?”

Daza clarified, “Where are you transferring to? There’s a lot of branches. Back to Oceania?”

“Ah, no. I was thinking...well, you always said how you liked it out where you lived. So I...” I wondered if I could go that way. It sounded better in his head. And as the words fell out, he was realizing how silly it sounded. Going just because his mentor said it looked nice.

“Then let’s do it. Let me know when you’re heading out so we can meet.”

He didn’t know if she was a mind reader or if she really meant that. But it still made a small smile reach him as he remarked, “Yeah, I’ll let you know.”

“It’ll be about two weeks,” the man brought his attention back as he took a stamp out, “and you’ll need to get a new license when you arrive to your new branch.”

“R-Right...”

“Anything else?”

“No, thank you,” Kai replied as he gave a small bow before turning to leave. Two weeks. Yeah, he could do that.

A sigh escaped him as he started to pull the laundry from the clothesline. The breeze provided one last drying as he reached for the clips. From behind him a soft ‘ding’ reverberated His eyes fell onto the wind bell. Its bright color overshadowed by the parchment attached with Yukina’s calligraphy, “I probably should take you down, right?”

He reached his arm up, causing the the bell to ding. As if protesting being moved. Pulling back when the breeze brough his hair in his face, he wondered if it was okay. Who knew, Yukina could be back tomorrow and complain of how much of a pain it was to put it up the first time. A small smile reached his features. Kai folded his clothes into the basket and slid the door back into the apartment. Perched atop the pile was the wind bell, “I’ll put back up when she gets back.”

He promised this to no one in particular. He just really would hate if a torrent washed it away. It just one of many little preparations Kai worked on during his two weeks. He swept and dusted it from top to bottom, finding old wrappers that had fallen in obscure areas. He washed dishes and put them away. He tossed out all kinds of food. And every bit of him pained him.

When he finished, Kai flopped onto the futon. He looked at his phone. No messages. He went into his mail and started a new letter.

Are you tired of me yet?

He started it for a minute. It was a question he wondered some times but wasn’t what the content of his letter. He went on to write:

I don’t really know if these annoy you not and since you haven’t answered back, I’m just gonna think you love it ♡ ～('▽^人)

But seriously, you don’t have to read them. I just feel I need to update you as I go. Which is why I’m telling you, I am leaving the Asia branch. I know we talked about doing that together some day--and we totally can when you come back--but I’m...I’m keeping our promise. It took a while to actually do that since I kept waiting. I still am waiting but you’d probably hit me on the head when you got back and say I’m a dummy for not going anywhere for at least a year.

So I’m doing it. ╰(✧∇✧)╯ Just watch me. I’ll try and maybe--

Kai paused. He then deleted the last sentence.

I hope you come back soon. I miss you, Furu.

He hit send and closed his phone. A sigh came to him as his eyes fell onto the duffel bag filled with his clothes and the few possessions he owned. Currently resing atop it was a small gravestone with crudely carved writing on it. Kai sat up to bundle dark locks into a messy , resolving to get dinner before the bento were all gone.

“Transfer?” the word came out much louder than Kai hoped. He nodded, “Yes, this is my last assignment before going to the Europe branch.”

“Why would ever do that? You barely complete missions as is. Much less suceed at them,” to that, Kai barely covered his grimace with his cup. Going out with other hunters was expected in the Asia branch, it reminded him of the salarymen that were probably heading out soon. And this time ended up with some hunters he graduated with. Another piped up, “There’s more dangerous beasts out that way. It’ll eat you alive, Adler.”

Kai remarked, “It’s true it’s different but maybe--”

“I give it a month.”

“I thought more of two weeks.”

It dissolved into another conversation. One that he didn’t care to hear the results of. He took another sip of his drink as he watched them chatter. Yeah, it was about what he expected. Not that he really blamed them. His track record was...abysmal at best. If not for how often he worked in the two years since licensing, his rank would’ve been just as terrible. Nevermind the senpai, seonbae, and tiền bối that would offer no guidance, still finding him a fluke. Nor pay mind to those his age or younger that would refuse cooperation or participation to add to an already ill reputation.

His fellow hunters were looking at the menu and gesturing to the server. They pointed out other things to get. Their attention momentarily on him to lead the server’s gaze to him as they explain it being his last night with them. So thus, they were celebrating. Translation to Kai, they would drink and eat as if no tomorrow and he would pay for it. As they made their orders, his gaze went to his phone as his free hand twirled a lock absently. How long would it be this time.

Kai ended up giving another deep bow in appreciation and apology as he finished dumping the last of the hunters to their accomodations. He apologized to the staff again as he exited. It was well into the night now and his apartment a good distance away. He started his trek back with streetlights and the neon signage as his light. It all felt too bright and made his head spin. Or maybe that was all the alcohol. Walking past characters of all sorts, Kai tread in the general direction of home. As he went, his thoughts wandered.

He’d heard about Europe branch. As the area serving as origin for many legendary beast, it had history. It was where the Bastion started and where those connected to it where likely to be. And living amidst some hotbeds of magical activities, hunting was often more fraught with physical danger than the incorporeal and spiritual as often the case over this way. The hunters from there sometimes thought to be cut from an entirely different cloth. Tougher, more cunning, and meaner.

It would be hard. But what wasn’t in this body of his? It would mean learning an entirely different kind of tactics. Well, his journal could use the update. It could be like it was here. If it was, at least he’s used to it and there’s a few places he hasn’t been. He would be without anyone he knew. That was fine, since he could find someone that he can spend some time with on occasion. Tonight proved that. It might show what everyone had been telling him: that he wasn’t cut out to be a hunter.

Kai bit his lip, his hand brushing against his bracelet, “But still...”

He placed the last of his belongings within his bag. It felt weird looking back at the apartment. He could see the gaps from where his trinkets were taken. The collage of pictures held splotches of the wall. Some valuables left imprints of their former place. It almost look like something was missing but Kai brushed that off. It was Yukina’s place, he was just crashing there for a while.

Like a ghost.

A quiet laugh left him with a smile without warmth. His eyes grew dark as he thought maybe he should stay. At least here he could pretend he was a hunter. A really crappy one but one nonetheless. He would have to live with being the liar, the failure, but at least he was alive. Instead of this living dead. Waiting in a limbo that hurt his heart as much his body. It might’ve served him right, the monster that got so many killed. And this existence...this hell was what he deserved, a sentence he should serve out.

His head bowed as his frame trembled. Those words drifting around his head. Words that he’d thought so many times to himself. Variations of it spoken to his face and behind his back. The thoughts that made his eyes sting. The hatred that would always lead to something drastic.

His heart seem to beat in his ears as he stumbled to his feet. He wandered to the bathroom, opening a few drawers. Then he found it. Kai looked at the mirror for a moment, drawing a breath.

SNIP snip snip snip snip

It might be hard.

The hunter put down his bag onto the bed. It felt like it’s been forever since he’s had a bed to himself that wasn’t a bunk bed. Although it was merely a hotel room, he found himself wandering around the room. Looking into the bathroom, closet, and ‘kitchen’ before flopping onto his bed. Jet lag tried to creep on him when he shot back up, “Oh right.”

I could never move on and be waiting for a person that’ll never return. It might all be for nothing and it will be just like before. I could fail over and over and show just how much I don’t belong here.

“You could’ve have done this before you got here?” the worker asked from behind the glass. She seemed more confused than annoyed. He sheepishly scratched his cheek, “It just sorta happened...I’m sorry for the trouble.”

The confusion turned to perplexion however she asked no further. Instead she finished typing into a computer and showed a screen to him, “Is the information on here correct?”

“Yep.”

“Alright, just give me a minute to finish this up. Now you’re going to need a new to take a new photo. So if you’ll head over to....”

Even though I’ve told myself ‘it wasn’t my fault,’ I’ve heard dozens of times over how much it was. And despite what I’ve said...I still believe it. Maybe I do deserve to live detested and miserable. And yet...

He arrived to the meet point a bit early. It was his first mission over here and the last thing he needed was to keep anyone waiting. The coordinates were a landmark at a park. He ended up hanging around, snacking as he waited for someone else that looked...’hunter-like.’

There’s this quiet yet stubborn thought...

“I thought I was getting here early but looks like you beat me to it,” came a voice from over to the side. His gaze fell onto a guy, probably only a little older than him. He had an interesting shade to his eyes, a blue he couldn’t quite place, and definitely tall. But if his words didn’t give the guy away, a few of the scars and build would’ve.

“Ah, well, maybe next time,” he said, immediately mentally cursing himself. This was supposed to be a good first step...The guy chuckled, “Hopefully, that doesn’t mean camping out.”

The newcomer offered his hand, “I’m Emil and you are...?”

A completely selfish wish...

“Aspis,” he replied, the beginnings of a smile, “Hope we can get along.”

I want to live.

Upon learning that they would be able to make a move to save their captured teammates and strike out against the Phoenix Five, the remaining Avengers gathered together to debrief and strategize. They were joined by a few new mutant allies and a powerful but familiar face.

SAM WILSON: Things were rough. From the beginning there had been an expectation that this was going to be a difficult right, but this wasn’t just difficult. This was the impossible fight that they somehow had to make possible. Everyone in the debriefing room looked beaten and torn like they had seen better days – and they had. But at least they were alive at all. That was more than a lot of their friends could say. There were dents in his shield and a chunk missing from his wings but Sam Wilson was glad to stand before his remaining team at all. “I know it’s bad out there,” he cleared his throat. “More than half our team is gone. But we can’t quit now. We had some information piled on our current status. I know some of you are missin’ loved ones, but we need you to hold out to the end so we can get through everything. As it stands: the Asgardians have no leader. Odinson was taken hostage by Emma Frost and we lost Valkyrie on the moon to Wither. She’s in the med bay along with all of the other infected patients. Don’t touch them for any reason or you’ll get infected too. Prince Ahura is now King of the Inhumans after Namor killed Crystal. Other casualties include Lana Baumgartner and Nathan Summers at the hands of Magneto. Billy Kaplan was wounded by Magik but we managed to retrieve him from Antartica. Wolverine managed to survive a fight with the Phoenix Cyclops as well, but most of our fights against their hosts haven’t gone well. Confirmed hostages include Kate Bishop, Gwen Stacy, Scott Lang, Jessica Drew, Janet Van Dyne, Doctor Stephen Strange and Rikki Barnes among others. Susan Storm was last seen in Latveria but we’ve lost all communication since. We’ve also had some wins though. We evacuated the Hellfire Academy, Madripoor, Subterranea, Tymyr Peninsula and Wundagore Mountain. Our goal was never to take hostages but currently have the younger Scott Summers and Sebastian Shaw in custody. To those of you who have won your fights, congratulations. Our infirmary has filled up faster than we have room to accomodate. I know it’s a lot, but we don’t have a choice in all of this. Which brings me to my next point,” Sam sucked in a lungful of breath. “We have to bring more protection to Wanda and Jean if we’re going to beat the Phoenix. So far we’ve kept their location a secret but we’re running out of options. Carol and I have been talking and we trust you all enough to tell you that they’ve been in Citrusville, Florida. It’s the Nexus of all realities and we hope that’s enough to amplify their powers. Both Jeans and Wanda have been instructed not to leave but that clearly was not obeyed as last night the elder Jean Grey left Florida for Krakoa and hasn’t been seen since. We’re assuming her husband, Scott, has her so that’s one less option for solving this. Anyone have any suggestions?”

ERIK: “Jean and Wanda are not left defenseless.” Erik spoke up after Sam had finished. He had just been outed to the group as a murderer– which was completely true– but he steered clear of that topic for the moment. “The elder Jean trusted me with their safety, but I had not anticipated her departure.”

AHURA: Ahura sat at the table, arm in a brace from a sprain he received from his fight with Sebastian Shaw, who was currently held in his custody. He had his father and fallen king on one side and his cousin’s lead guard on his left. He did his best not to hold judgement on Dante for what happened to his cousin. “I understand stand that we’ve been trying to keep this as isolated and small scale as possible but I think we’ve all learned that’s not an option.” The new king spoke up. He was beginning to grow tired of Magneto and how everything appeared to revolve around Jean Grey to him, therefore he made it the center of everyone’s attention. “This is a war so let’s treat it like one. I have two armies currently at my disposal along with the most advanced inhuman technology, and I assure you both are eager to avenge their queen and those who died during the attack on Atillan. I’m sure the proud warriors of New Asgard feel the same and just seek a figure to lead them. What I’m saying is that it’s time for drastic measures and full scale offenses less we end up like the other half of our comrades.”

RIRI: “We were trying to do something.” It was the first time that Riri had left her room in over a week. She worked better alone and time kept slipping by. “Originally it was the create a vacuum to suck the Phoenix from its hosts. Still the plan, but we’re also trying to triangulate the locations of those who are missing. The mutants have to be holding them somewhere. Between all your murdering you didn’t happen to hear anything useful did you, Magneto?”

ERIK: “Not so much.” Erik winced, but his expressions remained steady. “There was not much chance of rumors reaching me since I was alone on Genosha. I was brought to Jean and Wanda and that’s the extent of my knowledge.”

LOGAN: “I’ll go after Jean.” Finally Logan spoke up. “She understands the Phoenix better than anyone. We need her.” And he needed to make sure she was okay.

CAROL: Carol was sitting near Sam, though she wasn’t participating as much as she should have been. Instead, she was slouched in her chair, picking at her lips, lost in thought. She’d been dealing with the guilt of allowing the Phoenix to possess the five mutants — she’d been trying to be pacifist instead of putting an end to it then and there, like she should have. Like she would have. But Carol had been trying to fill the shoes of Steve Rogers, and that meant going in with a steady head. “We screwed up.” She finally spoke, offering what input she thought was necessary, despite the leading conversation. “I hope you all understand that we have no friends on the other side right now.” She glanced at Erik, but let it pass. “If you’ve learned anything, it’s that they will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. That includes injuring and killing us. If you haven’t put your war paint on already, it’s time to start now.”

SAM WILSON: “No offense, buddy, but if she didn’t come back I’m not likin’ your odds and we’re short staffed as is.” The Captain folded his arms over his chest as he addressed Logan. He spoke once more after Carol finished. “Just in case it hasn’t been said, your majesty, we’re sorry for your loss. There’s too many of our men falling. The Asgardian’s don’t have a ruler but I’m betting they’re willing to avenge their King as well. Us having an army isn’t the problem. They just keep cutting them down. Who here’s gone up against a host? What do we know about what they can do one on one?”

LOGAN: Logan might have sided with the Avengers, but he wasn’t part of the team. He didn’t have to follow their orders. So he tucked the idea of going after Jean away for later. “I did.” He spoke up again. “He kept goin’ on and on about how all of us were wrong, and that the five of them were going to change the world. He was overpowered and overdramatic.”

SAM WILSON: “You and Val went up against Wither, Dr. Brashear. Only one of you is here so we know it didn’t go well, but did you notice anything?”

JOHNNY: "Sounds about right.“ Johnny said from his place at the table, where he absentmindedly toyed with a pen. "So how are we going to get them back?” he looked straight at Sam, expecting an answer. “And how will we find Sue?”

BUCKY: “Why don’t we ask someone who actually took a hostage?” Bucky spoke up and looked towards Lorna, pointing at her. “She was the one I fought in Wakanda. And she took Rikki with her.”

ADAM: “I got the chance to examine Mr. Ford’s powers in great detail. I’d never seen something quite like it. It was fascinating.” He responded leaning in over the table, some of his injuries still remained. “What I did learn is that his powers now cause the atomic corrosion of any state of matter, including in its negative state, down to the subatomic level. In theory he can destroy anything. Furthermore. I trapped him in one of my opaque light field generators I made in order to protect the earth from threats the like of a supernova or world ending astroid and he was able to burst forth in less than a minute.” In truth, adam had never felt so overpowered by an opponent.

REED: Reed glanced between Johnny and Sam as Sue was brought up. But before he could add something to the conversation, Bucky brought something new to the table. “Right to the source– that’s always the best course of action. That’s how we’ll find her. So–” He turned his attention to Lorna. “You’ve been awfully quiet during this conversation. But it’s come to light that you have valuable information.”

FRANKLIN: Franklin was sat next to his uncle Johnny. He was terrified about all of this. If this had just happened a little bit longer ago he probably could have just willed the phoenix into being a pigeon but now his mother was gone and his powers weren’t what they used to be. “I can’t find her. I keep willing it but I just can’t find her.” He said seemingly looking to the others for answers. “I’ve always been able to find my Mom since I was a baby and now. Now I just don’t know.”

LORNA: A call out. How lovely. Lorna had been mostly unsure about whether or not she should come. Word of her father switching sides hadn’t meant much to her. She had been working with Remy more than him anyway and all Erik had been as of late was a headache. If he had his little epiphany or whatever that was his own business. The only reason she was there was the mutants and the fact that they were no longer safe under the Phoenix Five. "No matter what your whack powers tell you, she’s alive. They all are. Even some of the dead ones. Not all of them, mind you. We can just say that sometimes things look worse than they are. Krakoa didn’t want them to harbor hostages on him, so they got creative. What do you know about the mutant who took Sue out? Her name’s Blink and she’s… Well, she used to a good friend of mine before this. Definitely not the type to teleport the air out or someone’s lungs like she did your mother.”

TOMMY: Tommy couldn’t handle looking at his dumb face any longer. Erik killed them and he was just supposed to sit here and act like everything was kosher. Not happening. Even if it was petty and childish it would be worth it. Time seemingly slowed for Tommy as he began weaving around to the opposite end of the table. Taking a firm grasp on Eriks nipples through his shirt and twisted with gusto before returning to his seat and acting like nothing happened.

GWEN: Trouble trouble trouble. He was trouble. Gwen had been doodling out the hanger battle from Civil War in beautiful stick figures when there was a slight breeze. Cackling slightly she shook her head at the mini speedsters antics while she kept drawing. Half of the Fantastic Four were here and she’d have to lock lips with one at some point.

ERIK: Doing his best to pay attention but also keep quiet, Erik suddenly was caught up in a sharp pain. He winced, taking in a sharp breath of surprise and then laying a hand over his chest in confusion.

HANK: “Quite frankly I don’t care about whose friend they were or how good of people you once found them to be. They’re threats not just to the planet but the galaxy.” Hank finally spoke up feeling annoyed. “I understand wanting to end things peacefully but as Captain America stated, we have no friends on the other side, so let’s not act like we do.” Hank replied as he began fussing with his toolbot as few items came together. “Back to the vacuum concept. It’s promising if it works and that’s a big if. However, there are band-aid solutions that we can use to by time, to name a few, Quantum realm, neutral zone, negative zone and microverse. Banishing even just one there may by us the time we need to perfect a solution and test the effects of what happens to the phoenix when it’s split up between dimensions.” He said ignoring the fact that there was sentient life in most of the places he suggested. He thought it would be best not to bring up the topic of creating a man made blackhole and taking the phoenix five into them in hopes of shredding them to pieces.

REED: Reed huffed in frustration. “The fact that they are dangerous to the world doesn’t need to be debated currently. We need the hostages back.” He shot Hank an annoyed glance before turning back to Lorna. “Her mutation allows her to create portals for teleportation, correct? I’m assuming you wouldn’t bring her up if she hadn’t played a bigger role in this than we are aware of.”

LORNA: “Of course not. And I’m not saying we should go easier on her because she was a friend. I’m saying that that thing looks like Blink but isn’t. I’m no Phoenix expert but if it did that to her I don’t know what to say about the others. Kevin was always a little more rough so I’m not as surprised. He and Clarice are more separate from Emma, Scott and Namor. They’re a team but I don’t think they’re as much in charge. Blink used her Phoenix powers to boost the mutation of Magik. Illyana controls Limbo so together they pulled part of the hell dimension to Earth. Consider it a nightmare realm. That’s where your friends are. Blink and Wither are currently guarding it and you saw what happened when he touches you. Maybe it doesn’t kill you at first but it doesn’t take long to spread completely. If you want your people back you have to get through both of them and Limbo. I’ve never liked humans or how our people have been treated, but too many of us agree that this isn’t the way to fix our problems. We’re making the world worse, not better. The entrance is Cape Dezhnev in the Bering Strait. As for the Phoenix vacuum, well, I think you’d have to talk to my darling big sister.”

TRAUMA: Trauma had been silent just about the whole meeting and finally decided to chime in. “I’ll go… Go to the Hell on earth or whatever you want to call it.” His powers were magical in nature and that’s all he really knew. Between that, his experience with fear, and being able to be the perfectly tailored opponent for any individual it felt like volunteering.

SAM WILSON: "I’m sure we can make a sign up sheet.“ Sam’s voice was wry. "We’re glad you’re here, Polaris. Gambit as well. This isn’t Avengers against X-Men anymore. It hasn’t been for a while. If we’re going to save the world we don’t have a choice but to work together here.”

REMY: “Speakin’ of X-men,” Remy was standing near Lorna as he spoke, hot on the heels of her words. “It’s come to our attention that us mutants don’ all share t'e same ideals as Emma, Scott, and Namor. I know it’s hard as hell to go against people like you in support of people who not only aren’ like you, but also don’ like you, so I don’ blame t'e mutants t'at fought for other mutants, even if it were under Emma and t'e rest. However, Lorna an’ I will be givin’ t'e mutants t'at are left a chance to leave the Phoenix behind. It won’ be easy, but as many as we can get to go against the Phoenix Five will be more t'an we currently have.”

LORNA: Her head inclined towards Remy in agreeance. “We can’t get you onto Krakoa, but we can help you rescue the hostages and let you know what we do. I understand my father has stopped being a raging prick and you have most of the Grey-Summers dynasty as well. Between them and Wolverine you’ve already got an important chunk of the mutant leadership.” Lips twitched at the thought of everyone they were forcing to work together. “So we do our part. What are you doing to stop the Phoenix? If you’re taking the Limbo guards out you better have a plan.”

SAM WILSON: “We don’t have as much of a plan as we should.” Sam admitted. “These last few weeks we went through a lot to keep Wanda and Jean’s location secret in Citrusville, but between one of the Jean’s bailing we’re making exception to our rules. Wanda?” He looked to the door to where he knew she was waiting. “Your turn.”

ERIK: What Erik responded with was almost an eye-roll, but not quite. It wasn’t that he was annoyed with people bringing up his horrible actions as of late, but it made him uncomfortable. “I wasn’t in my right mind. It does not excuse anything I have done, but that part of me is gone now. My mind has been made right again.” He glanced over to his daughter, trying to express how sincerely he felt about it all. “Things will be different from now on.” That was all he had to say for now– and he let the room focus on Wanda and the task at hand.

WANDA: Leaving Citrusville for the first time in weeks hadn’t been as freeing as Wanda would have hoped. Anxiety still knotted her gut and tensed her spine. She belonged back at the Nexus but instead she stood before the war battered group of familiar and foreign faces. It was a conscious choice to ignore her father, knowing that he had made choices she couldn’t condone but didn’t want to discuss. “Vacuuming the Phoenix will only work to a certain extent. I overheard Dr. Brashear say Kevin broke free quickly. It will do the same, and the power will condense itself.” It was hard to explain. Wanda wasn’t a scientist but this was something she felt. “If you go tomorrow to face two of them, send a group after a third. Isolate them. Jean and I will monitor the energy from Citrusville. We need more time.”

CAROL: “So we have two missions then,” Carol interjected. “Rescue the hostages and separate the Phoenix. We will send a team to rescue the hostages, and another to battle the Phoenix. Assignments will come at a later time, but be ready. As it’s been said, this is war.”

But this meeting has gone on long enough– Wanda should be getting back.”

SAM WILSON: “Of course. We appreciate everyone takin’ time to come out at all, especially since it’s so bad outside.” People had families to protect while they could. “Lorna and Remy will be sticking around even though Erik will be going back to Citrusville with Wanda. Vis, if you could come see me after you drop them off that would be great. Assignments will be sent out tonight about where to go from here. We got any other questions before we wrap up?”

ERIK: “Let’s just be done.” Erik interjected before anyone else had a chance to answer Sam and keep them all here. He glanced back to Vis and Wanda and then swept himself quickly out of the room to wait for them outside.

SAM WILSON: "Your discretion will be appreciated.” Sam nodded his head towards the door. He waited a long moment before following behind. The lights clicked off and the latch turned. They made it through another day. Hopefully they’d be as lucky the next.

Lance plagued his dreams, his name on Keith's lips as he woke momentarily disoriented before realising just why he'd woken. Clumsily stumbling off his thin cot, he yawned widely as he moved to the cockpit deal with the ringing noise emanating from the area. Dropping down heavily into the pilot's seat, he pulled up the call that had been chiming for his attention "Keith?" Using a hand to wipe at his eyes, he had no idea why his mother was interrupting his sleep "Hey, mum. What's going on?" "I hadn't heard from you and was just checking in" "I was sleeping. It's a long flight" "You left 8 vargas ago, I thought you would have checked in once you were close" 8 vargas? It felt like he'd only just closed his eyes "Yeah. Sorry. Everything's ok here..." Dragging the call to one side, he opened up the ship's navigation "... and we're still about a varga out" "Good. As long as you're ok" "I'm fine. You don't need to worry so much" "We have an operative missing from the same coordinates we've sent you to, I think I have a right to worry" Rolling his eyes at his mother, Lance came back to the front of his mind. Tapping on the navigation screen he pulled up Erathus on the screen, the planet only a hop skip and a jump away from the Ghazex quadrant... maybe he could... "Keith?" "I'm here. I'm just looking at the planets surrounding those quadrants. Erathus seems to be the closest with the biggest trading centre" "There were no signs that Guile made it to Erathus" "There were no signs of him making it anywhere" Keith regretted the words the moment they slipped from his mouth "I mean, I'm just thinking here, but it does seem to be the main trade hub for its quadrant" "It's also highly populated with those less than desirable. I doubt he would have landed there, not unless it was a dire emergency" Erathus was that bad? Then what the hell was Lance doing there? It didn't sound like the kind of place he should be "What if they seller moved the meeting place?" Now he was simply manipulating facts to suit his curiosity. Lance obviously didn't wish to see him, so why was he deviating from his original mission and slightly praying that his mother would agree that he should in fact head to Erathus? "He would have notified us" "Not if he wanted to keep a low profile... You said the rebel camps had received no word from him..." "Keith..." "Look. I'm approaching the coordinates. I'll scan for any traces of his signature, but it could potentially be a lead. You mentioned this quadrant had seen a lot of activity, is it possible a new faction has arisen?" "From the intel we have, it is possible. A number of ships have been attacked or simply gone missing..." "Is there a salvage moon near here?" "On Thatus. It's two quadrants over. With Erathus being marketed as a tourist planet, the main source of income comes from the tourists making it there alive and in one piece" It sounded like a fucked up rich playground. The perfect place for less than legal things. So again, why the quiznak was Lance there? "Keith, something is obviously on your mind. What is it?" Biting the inside of his cheek uncharacteristically, he knew there was no escaping his mother's prying "I called Hunk earlier. Lance's family on Earth are worried about him" "You're thinking about Lance?" His mother knew something had transpired between the two of them, but not the details. She seemed to like Lance well enough, but they had barely interacted before she decided to return to the Blades rather than to Earth "Hunk said Lance is on Erathus" "Oh..." "Yeah" "Keith..." "I know. The mission comes first, but he..." "He's your friend" "Yeah. Don't worry, the mission comes first" "I trust you'll get it done. I also trust you'll make use of all the resources available to you" Wait. What? "Mum..." "Erathus is a tough place to make a life. It's not suited to long term living and draws in all kind of transients. If you think he can help, or if he can shed light on what's been happening in the area... We don't currently have any operatives in the area who can provide fresh intel on Erathus, so you'll be going in blind" Kolivan must not have been in the room. He'd damn near have a heart attack if he heard Krolia giving Keith permission to deviate on his original mission plan "I... I don't even know if he'll speak to me. He didn't even tell me he was in space. I thought he was still back on Earth spreading Allura's message" His mother's face softened "I can't tell you what to do. I trust you'll complete your mission, but I also know how much you miss your old team. If your scans come up with nothing, then... Lance may be able to help. I'll leave it your discretion" "Kolivan's going to be pissed" "Leave him to me" Feeling a smile tug on his lips, it was interrupted by another yawn. Shaking himself in attempt to wake up, he pushed the smile to his lips "I always do" "Be safe" "You too, mum" Signing off the conversation meant having to get ready for action. Showering and dressing left him feeling somewhat human as he pulled his hair back into his usual ponytail. Did he really want to see Lance? That was a no brainier. He missed fighting along side him. The constant attempts to one up each other, and knowing Lance had his back completely. But would Lance even see him. Placing a hand on Kosmo's head, he ruffled his fur affectionately "What am I supposed to do? Maybe I should have brought Axca along after all? But if Lance is working on finding himself again, then should I really be interrupting him out of nowhere?" Kosmo looked at him like he was an idiot. His wolf forced to sit through many a long night of self angsting over how things had played out "Ok. We'll scan the area, check in with the rebels, then hit up Thatus. Then... He didn't want to take my call, but he can't turn me away if I show up... right?" His wolf definitely thought him an idiot. He was acting enough of an idiot for to be justified... "I'm the freakin' Black Paladin of Voltron. It's just Lance. Why am I making such a big deal about this? I'm just checking to make sure he's alright. That's all..." Kosmo huffed, not convinced. Done with his wolf, he turned his attention back to his mission. Guile needed to come before his laughable love life. * Thatus was a complete bust. The junk moon negative for any residual radiation signature left by Guile's ship. None of the rebel camps had any new information for him, nor did several smaller planets he stopped by during his investigation, though they had also been affected by whatever was happening in the sector of space. Calling this through to his mother, he was given the lecture of watching his back on Erathus, and to notify her if anything at all should happen, which she felt likely it would given his status as the Black Paladin and his human appearance. Forced to leave his ship at the docking station, setting foot on Erathus was a trip and a half. It was just like the images of Earth from before the Third World War. The architecture right out of one of the Garrisons boring history books, while the vehicles were even modelled to match the era with a touch of space in the fact that they all hovered. Making his way into the city past the station, Kosmo started pulling against his hold, his wolf clearly excited by all the noise and colour, but none of it was close to what he'd seen in those few snippets of phone call with Lance. Wracking his memory, he could vaguely remember catching what seemed to be the letters "GE", which meant nothing. After spending so long in space, having English brandied everywhere was like a slap in the face. Even time seemed to be measured by Earth standards. Keeping his hand firmly on Kosmo, he pulled up how communicator's browser, trying to think of how to search for what he wanted before realising he was making things far more complicated than he needed. He was looking for a club on Erathus that ended with "GE". The device taking a fraction of moment before loading the results. Swapping to image view, he had more success. The thousands of results dropping down to more manageable number. Only a few ticks later, he was looking at the same "GE" he was sure he'd seen glowing in the background. "The Guilded Cage". Listed as a club, it fitted the bill, and wasn't as far from the station as he'd expected. Bringing up the directions, he steeled himself as he started moving with the ever steady flow of tourists. Reaching the club, Keith had had to avoid more people than he'd like to have. While each store was set up individually, it didn't mean that they didn't have all sorts of employees out the front trying to peddle business, or stopping him for an autograph. Unfortunately wearing his Blade hood would have only served to draw more attention to himself, leaving him to grin and bear it all. Lance would have howled with laughter had he been there to witness Keith's failure with his people skills, and now he'd come this far, his hand shook as he pushed on the golden door handle and entered the club. Being early in the morning, he'd thought trade would have died down as patrons nursed their hangovers from the night before. Instead he was submerged into the thick of the club where the music was deadened by a shimmering forcefield that allowed the ongoing lightshow above the dance floor to cast its glow over what seemed to be some kind of entrance. With no real idea were to move next, he walked over to what he took to be the reception, manned by a rather annoyed looking alien who sat before a wall of keys. The description only listed the club as a club, yet the keys led him to believe that the place may also double as a hotel. If it was a hotel, it would explain why Lance had opted to stay here rather than finding himself an apartment or such... though, if he was working, shouldn't his employer have provided accomodation? "Can I help you?" Clearing his throat, Keith really hoped he could "I hope so. I'm looking for a friend" Sighing, the alien lowered his dataslate "Does this friend have a name? Or am I supposed to guess" "His name's La..." No. One of the people he was with called him "Leandro", not "Lance" "His name's Leandro" Picking the dataslate back up, the alien lent back in his chair "Leandro isn't taking customers at the moment" Customers?! Why would Lance be taking customers? "I'm not a customer, I'm his friend" "Look, if I let everyone in claiming to be his friend, it'd never end" Anger prickled under Keith's skin, the man clearly implying more than Keith was comfortable with "Just what are you trying to say?" "That he's a popular guy. Real heartbreaker" "I'm his friend from Earth. I just want to talk to him" "In that case give him a call. Until then, why don't do you what every other broken heart does and drink your sorrows" This couldn't be right. Lance wasn't that kind of guy. He was a ridiculous flirt, but faithful to a fault. Biting down an annoyed growl, he looked towards the bar doors. When the alien failed to say anything else, he figured he might as well check the club out in hopes of finding Lance inside, however slim the chance. Kosmo wasn't a fan of the music, and Keith wasn't a fan of the scene. Suspended in cages just above the dance floor, dancers of all races bared almost everything they had. Ordering the first drink off the list, Keith skulked his way over to the corner of the room, spying a staircase that seemed to lead to an upper level. The only problem was the two huge bouncers at the foot of it... and the fact he didn't know if Lance was actually up there. Having come this far, the logical thing to do would be to call Lance, but the thought of being rejected again cut a little too close to home "Can you get me up there?" Looking to the stairs, Keith wasn't quite ready when his wolf decided to teleport right off the bat. The second level of the club was like stepping into another world with its plush red carpeting and black walls. The doors almost hidden along the hall and by the lack of light "Ok... let's see if Pidge's hacking program works here" Moving into the shadows with Kosmo, Keith pulled up the program, letting it run its course as it sought out the clubs security system. He had intended to run the program downstairs while blending in, but Kosmo's enthusiasm at seeing Lance again had ruined the mission before it'd even begun. Softly urging the loading green bar to hurry up, there was a soft ding as it completed and his device was filled with the clubs information. Nothing beat Pidge. Even on the otherside of the universe she was still just as formidable as if she'd been by his side. He totally owed her big time for this. Scrolling through the excess of information, he found a room booked under the letters "Lea" which had to be Lance. Room 727... looking for a number on the closest door, he realised it was bare. His small victory not quite as victorious as he'd hoped, leaving him to rely on Kosmo again "Can you track Lance down? No teleporting you big doof" Kosmo led him to the very end of the hall before sitting in front of another annoyingly plain door. Raising his hand to knock, panic once again struck. They hadn't left things on the greatest of terms. Phone calls were one thing, but it was nothing like speaking face to face... and god his sad pining arse wanted to. Whether responding to his presence outside the door, or a sensor he couldn't see, Lance's door slid open silently. Maybe there was no need for security with the two bouncers looking like they could easily snap a mere human in two without breaking a sweat "Lance?" Cautiously entering the space, he knew he had the right room when he sighted the photo of Allura on the rooms small kitchenette counter. The whole place had a pay as you go kind of vibe, yet still held traces that this wasn't that kind of space for Lance "Lance? Are you here?" Receiving no answer, Keith wasn't sure what to do next. If Lance was working, it could be vargas before he returned... "Lance, its Keith..." With a whoosh, a door opened to the left of him, Keith nearly jumping out of his skin as Lance walked out what appeared to be a bathroom and promptly froze mid ruffle of his wet hair "Keith?!" Almost shrieking his name, it was nice to know he wasn't the only one shocked "Hey, man" "Wha... how... wha... How did you get here?" Spluttering, Lance was just as handsome as he remembered him... then it hit him... his friends marks were absent from his face. The marks that Keith hadn't been able to look at intially now gone, leaving behind Lance's beautiful face "I was in the area and thought I'd drop by" "But... what... why? How did you even know where to find me?" This wasn't quite the reunion he'd planned in his head, even though he hadn't actually planned out what he'd say or do. Lance seemed annoyed by his presence "I called you the other night, and happened to see this place in the background" Facepalming, Lance groaned "That's right. Look, I'm sorry I hung up on you. You called in the middle of work. I'm actually on my way to my job..." Was Lance politely trying to throw him out? After all he'd gone through to find him "I actually need your help. I'm looking for someone, and thought you might know them. I mean, you have been here for the last 5 phoebs" His tone held far too much accusation to be comfortable. Lance looking pretty damned uncomfortable as he draped his towel over his shoulders "Keith..." "A Blade member has gone missing. He was supposed to meet with an arms dealer so we could trace the source, but he failed to check in" "Man, I'd really like to help you, but work..." Was Lance hurt? The light in his eyes seemed to have dimmed "Can you just take a quick look?" Closing his eyes, the Cuban took a deep breath before exhaling as he opened them "Keith, I'm sorry you came all this way, but I really need to get to work. Why don't you send me the files and I'll take a look for you" "Or you could look now" Walking further into the space, Lance walked right past him and over to what seemed to be a walk in robe, the wall sliding away with another soft hiss "I can't" "Lance" "Keith" "Drop the bullshit. What are you doing here? Here in space? And why didn't you tell me you were here? Your family's been calling Veronica nonstop. Hunk says not to worry, then I find you in a what? A strip club? Where you're not taking clients? What's going on? This isn't like you" Turning on him, Lance glared "Isn't like me? What do you even know?" "I know..." "What?! We haven't spoken in months. Phoebs! Now you show up asking for a favour. No. I have to get to work" "Lance" "Don't even bother Keith. I'm sorry your friend is missing, and I hope you find him. But you need to leave" Where was all this coming from? The Lance he knew would talk it out before leaping to anger. Snatching a jacket out his walk in robe, Lance went about getting ready in front of him "Lance, I came here because I missed my friend" "Right. Sure you did" "You didn't even tell me you'd left Earth! I would have..." "You would have what? Dropped everything to come visit me?" "I thought you were with your family on Earth. You made it pretty clear you intended to stay there" Giving a dry laugh, Lance picked his communicator up and moved towards the door "Lance..." "Earth... Earth isn't home anymore. It's not the same planet we left. When we left, no one knew about all the races out there. And now... it's changed too much. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy all those people are safe, but Earth isn't the same. Besides. The Holt's have already started training the next generation of Paladins. They're even working on their own versions of the Lions. Coran and Romelle are happy on Altea. Hunk is always travelling across the universe with Shay. Shiro's retired to find his happy ever with Curtis. You're running Daibazol with your mum, and Kolivan... All I had left was Earth, but it's not home anymore. I don't recognise the streets. The beaches. The people. Nothing can ever be like it was before. In the castle, all I had were my dreams of going home... and now I have nothing. So thanks for stopping by, but you need to go" Grabbing him by the sleeve, Lance forced him over to the door, opening it than pushing him forcibly into the hall. Whether by accident or not, his friend's communicator slipped from Lance's hand as he withdrew his grip "I haven't seen your friend. Go home Keith. I know what I'm doing" Kosmo teleported out just as the door was closing, the pair of them left standing in the hall shocked at what had transpired. This wasn't the Lance he knew... but did he even really know him anymore?

Heading away on these shorter trips over winter/early spring we always try and look at the long range forecast to see what the weather is going to do. This time it was showing a fairly large low appearing to be parked over Northland that helped us make the decision to head south on this trip. Each time we have stopped in Taupo we have tried to stay in a different place to experience more and also to have something new to share on the blog.

I had read really good reports on various Facebook posts about the National Equestrian Centre located to the north east of Taupo and convinced Sarah this would be a good place to stay. At $5 per person per night plus $5 per vehicle if you want power it’s reasonably priced for a facility like this. It also has a dump station, water, toilets, free shower, kitchen and washing machines, although finding them is another story.

The NZMCA directory and App mentions to come in through gate 1 although that was shut so we came through gate 2. The registration booth is located next to the toilets and easy to spot. The fun part was with the wind constantly blowing the door shut and with no interior light it made it a job for two people to register. One to hold the door open and the other to complete the paperwork.

The map in the registration booth shows a large parking area on the grassed area overlooking one of the arenas. The power boxes are scattered along here so if the place was full there might not be power for everyone, or you may not be able to get close enough to point for your plug to reach. The ablutions block is clean and tidy, well set up but for some reason there is no shower in the mens, so it’s either use the disabled shower (unisex) or the one in your own van.

We found ourselves a nice spot a bit further forward than what you can see in the photos but a rather large tree prevented the aerial from tuning in, nessistating moving the van back so that the evening news could be watched.

With the van parked up it was off for our usual explore of the area. This complex is absolutely huge and although we didn’t need the dump station we wanted to find where it was as well as the location of the laundry facilities as there is nothing in the sign in booth to tell you where they are.

To the left of the campsite looking from the road is gate 3 which leads to the above information board which sadly still doesn’t tell you where the dump station is located. Interestingly the last hazard written on the board dates from 2016 so you have nothing to fear entering this site!

Mission accomplished! In the far left corner of the grounds are a set of portacoms, which are available as accomodation for the night if needed. It’s here that the kitchen and laundry are located although I only found this out later so never got any photos. Then behind the portacoms is the dump station. A little signage or an instructional map somewhere would be of great benefit to newbies such as us visiting this place.

As you would expect the National Equestrian Centre is all about the horses and although there was a marked absence of them on the day of our visit I am assured that they are usually there in great numbers, especially over the weekends. Given the volume of stables and the size of the arena’s including this huge indoor one it’s obviously built with this in mind.

From the equestrian centre it’s just a short walk or drive down the road to the point where it splits into two one way to the Rapid’s Jet, boat ride which we chose not to do on this occasion but maybe on another visit. Rates currently are at $129 for a 35 minute ride although we found a special on http://www.grabone.co.nz for only $69 so make sure you check for specials before parting with any money. Speaking with the staff here they told us about the dam release at various times and to make sure we went to look.

The other fork in the road takes you on about a 20 minute walk towards a bridge over the river and a power station. As we wandered along the road we noticed an overpowering smell from the side of the road, going to investigate we discovered the remains of a number of sheep as well as a goat. So we wondered if some rustling and dumping had been going on.

Arriving at the bridge over the river here we could see the remnants of the release flowing over the rapids just up the river. It was also interesting to see what looks like a really good spot for some freedom camping with a large area just before the dam but a check of Campermate doesn’t show any camping here so not sure if it is allowed.

We decided that we would spend another night in Taupo and move onto another destination making a stop first to see the opening of the dam gates at 12 noon which despite looking upside down here will play the right way. (I really do have to work out this issue). More about this in the next post.

So would we stay again at the National Equestrian Centre, the answer to this is yes in fact we have already (The blog is a few days behind real life). Away from the hustle and bustle of busier places like 5 Mile Bay but still close enough to all the major attractions.

I Feel Broken

I don't know even know where to start with this one. So, I'll start where I think this started. Around April/May last year I was quite low about leaving university and not having anything to do after I graduated. I mean, really low. Obviously, I applied for jobs/internships, even amidst the last stretch of my dissertation piece, so I would be prepared. Side note (this also becomes relevant to the story): my parents are really terrible when it comes to understanding my emotional wellbeing. My Father is void of emotion and I've never once spoke to him about how I feel about things (whether big or small), my Mother engages but often turns things into an argument. Like, she doesn't think I should show emotion or vulnerability, and turns it back on me as if I don't have a right to be upset or feel low.

During my job application process, I received a few rejections, and a couple of interviews. One that I focused on in depth was a three-month internship in Amsterdam. During my break, and just before I left university completely, I had a Skype interview with the company in Amsterdam and they got back quickly and told me that I'd been accepted. The only thing is that it would require financial support from parents to live there. Cut a long story short: my parents never gave a clear answer as to whether they would help. There was a lot of gaslighting from my Mum's part and essentially silence from my Father. Literally a week before I was meant to start, even after arguments and going back on promises, my Mum said she'd support me if I found somewhere to live. Giving me a short amount of time to look, which was incredibly difficult. Obviously I was beyond grateful, was never told where the money was from, but was really grateful. To add another difficult layer to the story, I also heard from a company in London who I progressed with to a final stage interview for a full-time job, the catch was that I needed to be in Amsterdam at the time of the interview. I really wanted to hear what my parents had to say about my options, since the job wasn't solidfied whereas the internship was. I didn't want to be in a situation where I literally had nothing. Personally, I felt like my parents were both really bad communicators and always tiptoed around giving a clear answer that I needed to hear. At this point, it sounds like I am being needy, but parents are all I have and I needed there advice on this situation. All in all, it came down to me going to Amsterdam and skipping the interview.

The internship was great and the experience was nice, but only three months. I was back to square one when I came back and had to start looking and working hard on creating CVs and looking for jobs. There are no opportunities where I live, it's a small town and it's a horrible place to live quite frankly. Both my parents know I don't want to live here long-term, even saying things like 'you can move to London when you get a job' and 'commuting to London is easy, everyone does it' to help me with decisions in the past. Basically, after a few interviews (outside of my hometown), my Dad did suggest that it would be hard for them to financially support by moving away instantly. My Mother, however, would often contradict him (though I'm not sure if she was telling me what I wanted to here). The fact is that they both let me go to the interviews, with one in London being the one I was ultimately accepted for. Afterwards, silence from both of them. My Mum basically told me to forget about looking for a place, that rail prices were too high, etc. To enjoy the Festive period, I put into the back of my mind. This past weekend my Mother, again, gave straightforward insuinations that I could move to London. Even looking at hotels and pricing things up for me. I spent the past two days (when I start on Monday) looking and contacting people about rooms, when I queried her about being able to find a place. What I feared would happen came true, she went back on her word, told me she wouldn't be able to pay, and that the budget was really low (a budget, she and I both knew would not be able to provide accomodation). I literally broke because I couldn't believe my emotions were being played with. If the answer was always no, all I needed was a firm and straight forward answer. Instead my hopes were up and then they were trodden on at the last minute. I'd put SO much effort in arrangng viewings and literally taking an early mroning train so I could make this work.

I feel grateful for what my parents have done for me, but I despair the emotional toll it's taken on me and how much of a burden I'm made to feel. What I needed was clarity and understanding, but instead my Mum likes to kick me while I'm down nd make things difficult. Even bringing things up like how I have no money (which this job would've helped with and I obviously would've paid any money I owed them, including the Amsterdam trip back-as she's used this against me in arguments, telling me I have to pay it back when it was never said that I would have to (again, I would, it's just the inconsistency and lack of clarity that fucks up my mind) and that I can't go back to my university location (as I would sometimes when arguments got too much) anymore.

My mental state broke last night, I'm over-analysing this whole last year. About how I should've went to the job interview in London instead of Amsterdam. How my Mother is using my as emotional playtoy to raise my expectations and drag me down at the last minute. I can't bare to look at her or even speak, and my mental health is at an all time low. I can't speak to anyone, I don't know what to do about this job that I'm supposed to start on Monday and I can't see any brightness in the future. I genuinely don't know what to do.

Also: I 'd like to add that My Mum had also told firends of mine, and family members, that I had got this job. So, basically revealed that I had a new job to go to, which surprised me because I knew there would be a chance it might not be able to work out. So, now I have to face the embarrasment of telling family and friends that it didn't work out, when it could've been kept quiet by my Mother. We're currently not speaking at all, since my Mum always tries to one-up in playing the victim when, I personally feel, that she's the one who is being emotionally abusive and dragging me through the mud instead of providing straightforward answers. She has a horrible tendecy, and dreadful past, of big lies and dishonesty. Pretending that conversations assoicated with this situation exsisted when they never, telling melast-minute information that she knew would mean this wouldn't work out.

All I wanted was to be successful and do people proud, but what it's caused is emotional anguish and a terrible relationship and outlook on my parents, where I feel like I've seen the worst of them and want nothing more to do with them. Which is horrible in a situation where I have nothing else. Just makes me want to give up on life.

Status Update

I've played most-way through the 2nd portion of my plan referred to in this post.

Turns out I was up so late the night I was doing all the gameplay for the 2nd post that, well, I forgot I started putting up Communications satellites.

Currently I have completed 3 launches of the Rainbow-01 Satellites, using a Bissel 02B-P variant.

These satellites are large, heavy, awkward, and over-engineered but they look pretty neat.

I've further revised the naming conventions, separating projects or missions from crafts, and located a new guide on how to align communication systems which is not what I'd learned last time but... I don't know this seems too simple!

The first 500 (481, actually) Science

I think the basic science choices (everything below 45) speak pretty much for themselves: you need them in order to do anything.

But the first few sciences in the 90 cost category have been deliberately chosen.

Tech tree at +481≈ science

Fuel Systems aught to be your first 90 cost tech as the FL-T800 can reduce your part count by 4-6 depending on the setups you are using, and if you are flying some micro-rockets having the FTX-2 Fuel Ducts can allow for some super-early efficient staging.

A close second is Electrics, providing you with your first real useful probe core, a significant battery upgrade, and the OX-STAT. The world is your oyster / semi-liquid dimensional tear into a universe of pure mineral oil after acquiring the OKTO and OX-STAT, less so if you're running the difficulty setting that kills probe control but only by a fraction.

Advanced Flight Control finally gives Mechjeb some usable features and brings in RCS components allowing for RCS-propelled probes (and for rescue missions or docking contracts).

Advanced Construction, Miniaturization, Heavy Rocketry, Propulsion Systems will be next and then I'll likely try to earn up to the next stage of tech and hopefully pick up Space Exploration so I can complete station missions.

Operational problem and proposed solutions

I identified that the variations around the Bissel "concept" were not working organisationally and coupled with having both the objective of a mission and the craft upon which that task is completed sharing the same name was quite confusing. Using the "Bissel-02B-P (var)" craft to lift a Rainbow I satellite into place, and thus saving the file and naming the log entry "Rainbow I" was very misleading, I felt.

Therefore I decided to go down the standard procedure of creating simple "LV" or launch vehicle craft and saving them as sub-assemblies (I would like to thank Squad and big G for the re-root tool) to be used over and over.

This means in the logs now have a "craft" entry for the LV used and a "name" entry which is populated by either a project title or payload title - so it has the MaxoSat I launched for Maxo Construction Toys (payload) and Cuisinart I (mission title) the first attempt to reach the mun (program log near end of post).

This clearly delineates the "LV", which are universal, from the project which will change frequently.

Objectives

The craft shall deliver the payload to orbit with an acceptable ease of use. The craft shall be inexpensive. The craft shall be of no more than 3 stages. The craft shall use a minimum number of parts. "The Payload" is defined as 2.5t. (in the end I believe this came out to 2.73t)

Commentary

I created three craft, Bissel II-01-LVvA which was the second version of an initial prototype, a staged liquid rocket the LVvB (the winner), and a cheaper Solid Fuel Booster staged rocket the LVvB.

I figure I would advanced the model as moderate changes are made (like replacing all the winglets or something) and advanced the version if I ever make a significant change (unlikely).

Anyway, the competition had 3 variables: ease of control during launch, price, and complexity.

The LVvA was created by the engineers at KSC, attempting to get the best of available technology, the LVvB was presented by the JKJ and SP Co. (Jebediah Kerman's Junkyard and Spaceship Parts Company), and the LVvC by the Rockomax Conglomerate.

The LVvA was dismissed on complexity and cost being, the most expensive model by 27.7% and requring more attention during launch. The LVvA needed to rotate twice 90° in order to safely separate the empty stages, far too much work.

The LVvC was well liked by the middle managers at KSC due to it's cheapness but it was found to be far too difficult to control. The LVvC in flight required the main engine to be throttled back lest it run out of fuel before the SFBs did, this was again far too fiddly for our pilots. The Rockomax Co. did offer to increase the main stage fuel quantity it was decided that this was against the spirit of the contest; to create an efficient, simple launch vehicle. Lastly the LVvC also had the least Δv of the three options at 7% less than the LvVB.

That left the LVvB, now the Bissel II, as the winner.

Learning from creation of the Bissel II

The Bissel II LV can carry 2.73t to orbit for $14,100 ($5,164/t) with 100-200 Δv remaining meaning it has enough to probably carry up 3t ($4,700t)

I wonder if $5000/t is a good average to work with? My next LV will be able to carry either 10.92t or 8.19t, giving me 54,000 or 40,950 to accomplish that task. Given what I know by the rough cost of a LV that can carry that much, I think it's far too much money to plan for, I think there's a base cost in every rocket, say 5k, just to get it off the ground and on top of that is your, well, actual cost.

Name revamp

Lastly, I have overhauled and improved the mission program log to include more information I feel is pertinent to record.

We now track Mission separate from Launcher. 4 new columns, Contractor, Cost, Reward, Profit - to help me keep better eye on our non-scientific first earnings. An XP column, which I have not tracked anything in. 4 summary calculations are at the top of the sheet, 3 summarizing contact accounting, and 1 for accumulated science.

The Program Log

I don't know if I'll need a scheme for mission names yet, I think I can just keep winging it.

Mod changes

RCSBuild Aid - to accomodate using RCS engines as engines for an entire stage. This is overall a nice mod for making sure all your RCS nozzles are pointed in useful directions.

Final lessons

A good exercise in rocket construction with clear goals can breed some excellent thinking. I cranked out the next LV up (Electrolux II) almost immediately after finishing the Bissel II.

Put engines you plan to stage away below engines you will be keeping, the interaction with the moving craft means you're far less likely to smash your own engine off as you ascend past your falling boosters.

There will be far more to learn next time after I re-work-out how to get communications satellites into neat orbits.

N.b. I already did and I can’t believe it was this easy. I’m almost embarrassed I never even came close to working this out. Turns out space is hard, folks.
