Top 10 Characters I want to see come to Disney Mirrorverse

I am a fan of Disney Mirrorverse. What impresses me the most about it is the story and most of all the character designs. However, there are a lot of other characters who I think have a lot of potential to come to Mirrorverse, and I'm gonna give you my top 10 characters that deserve to come to Mirrorverse. For each pick, I'll be going over what type of character they would be (Melee, Tank, Ranged, or Support), what they're playstyle could be, and maybe how some could be incorporated in the game. Now, this is my picks and not yours, and your picks can be completely different. Now, let's dive right in.

10. Goliath (Gargoyles)[Tank]

Starting off with the protagonist of a 90s Disney tv show that helped define a lot of childhoods (along Ducktales and Talespin). Goliath is a warrior that has a lot of abilities, from gliding, super strength, his basic claw strikes to even a bit of magic, a healing factor, and a rage mode. I see him as a Tank character, given he also has super durability, given he's a stone statue by day and defender by night.

9. Namaari (Raya and the Last Dragon)[Melee]

I had to add a villain to this, simply because we have a small number of villains than heroes in Mirrorverse, and I chose Namaari because not only would she be awesome in Mirrorverse, but it should make sense that she come to Mirrorverse since Raya is in the game. I see her Namaari as a Melee character having a playstyle and appearance of an Assassin, given her skills in martial arts and the use of two blades, but she could have an ability where she uses her crossbow for a ranged attack, and an ability where she calls on her big cat to attack enemies, or she can ride on it for some mounted attacks.

8. Robin Hood (Robin Hood)[Ranged]

Even though we have an archer in Merida in Mirrorverse, I think the OG archer of the Mouse House should come into the game, heck, Merida and Robin Hood could have a friendly rivalry to see who the better archer is (old school archer vs new school archer). But seriously, he would obviously be a Ranged character were he could have the standard abilities of an archer character in any MOBA/RPG game, from volley shots, charged shots, shooting arrows in a cone, etc., but I can also see Robin have an ability where he tosses out three bags of money and if his allies collect one, the will be healed (think Cupid from SMITE and his ability Share the Love); also he could have an ability where when he attacks an enemy, he has a chance to steal health, items, and of course, currency.

7. Merlin (The Sword in the Stone)[Ranged]

We all know that Merlin is one of the most amazing mentors not just in Disney history, but in all pop culture history. Being such an amazing and powerful sorcerer, he would be a Ranged character, easily harnessing Stellar Magic to give him access to many different spells, like taking inspiration from his counterpart in SMITE. I could even see him being a chief advisor of the Guardians, aiding some of them in training to giving them some helpful advice.

6. Wart aka Arthur Pendragon (The Sword in the Stone)[Melee]

When Merlin comes to Mirrorverse, Arthur should definitely join him. Arthur does have Excalibur, and thanks to user s10127470, Arthur's Mirrorverse design could have him wear a magical suit of armor created by Merlin to enhance his physical abilities. Arthur's playstyle could possibly be similar to his SMITE counterpart, but given that Merlin is teaching him, Arthur could also be like a Spellblade or an Eldritch Knight, using a bit of magic to empower his sword fighting. While Arthur is still in training (you know, to be a warrior and a freaking king), he's got a lot of allies who have a lot of experience to help him.

5. Kidagakash "Kida" Nedakh (Atlantis: The Lost Empire)[Melee]

Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a very underrated movie, and it shouldn't be, so having someone from the movie come to Mirrorverse would give it some representation, and while Milo Thatch would also be a good candidate, I had to go with Kida. Much like Merida, Raya, and Mulan, Kida is a warrior princess (in Kida's case, a warrior princess turned queen) with a lot of abilities, from using an Atlantean spear, martial arts, throwing knives, and using Atlantean magic, so her playstyle could go from her warrior side or her mystic side, but thinking about Freya, Maman Bridgitte, and Ao Kuang (SMITE), I think that Kida could be like how they play: having physical basic attacks, and having magic abilities. So, a Melee attacks like using Atlantean magic to power up basic attacks, shooting magical shots, place a shield around an ally, or heal them.

4. Tarzan (Tarzan)[Melee]

Another warrior from Disney that needs to make it into Mirrorverse. He would clearly be a Melee character where he would use his spear for basic attacks, and even an ability were he throws it like a javelin toss, and taking some inspration from Nidalee (League of Legends) and drawing inspiration from a Totem Warrior from DnD, where he could summon a gorilla spirit to attack enemies, and he can also use his signature cry to raise the attack and critical hit stats of his allies. So yeah, this jungle daddy definitely deserves to make his mark in Mirrorverse.

3. Li Shang (Mulan)[Melee]

I believe Shang could play similarly to Mulan, but with some creative differences. He would be a Melee character where he uses a sword, like Mulan, but he would also use a bo staff and bow and arrow, and his passive could reflect his lack of sense of pain where attacks from enemies that hit him take half the damage they would normally do. He could also use buffs to raise his allies stats like critical hit chance, focus, etc. He could be incorporated in an event where he oversee's the Guardian's training session and personally training certain Guardians.

2. Prince Naveen (The Princess and the Frog)[Support]

Since Tiana is an alchemist in Mirrorverse, it only makes sense that Naveen to come to the game as a bard, given his love for music and his main instrument being a small guitar. Naveen would obviously be a Support character where his playstyle can take inspiration from characters like Apollo (SMITE) and Sona (League of Legends), using his music to heal, protect, and buff up his allies, while damaging and debuffing enemies.

I had to put Prince Phillip on the top spot because he should've already been in the game when it first came out. I mean, the guy is one of the most proactive characters in the Mouse House and he clearly knows his way around a fight. He would be a Melee character utilizing his classic arsenal: the Sword of Truth and the Shield of Virtue, and possibly taking some inspiration from Lancelot (SMITE) and even Leona (League of Legends). Also, since Princess Aurora is coming to Mirrorverse, Prince Phillip needs to join her.

Okay so now that this poll is done, I was curious about the OTHER votes, so because I have about a billion more important things I SHOULD be doing but don't wanna, I went through and took a tally.

So, the poll got 3,058 votes total.

That means that, with 14.1% of the vote, Voltron - our indisputable winner (it sure was my vote...) got 427 votes.

Of the 10 I included, the one that got the LEAST votes is Glee, or 83 votes.

Now, keeping in mind that not everyone who voted "other" wrote something in, the "other" breakdown is:

MCYT (especially DSMP specifically) - 49 people mentioned MCYT in the tags, that's 1.6% of all the votes, and it surely would have been higher if I'd had it as an explicit option.

Clearly, I should have included MCYT, and probably Dragon Age and Homestuck, in the original, in place of Glee, Supernatural, and Undertale, but overall, I think I actually did manage a pretty good list of the top 10.

Also, to be clear: every fandom has a percentage of toxic people, and it's usually about the same percentage - around 1%. But what can make a fandom more or less toxic is how vocal that 1% is and how empowered they got by people serving as loud leaders and directing the vitriol. That's a lot of why Voltron stands out: the people who were most toxic in the Voltron fandom were very organized in their toxicity. They weren't just minding their own business spewing vitriol, they were collectivizing to implement major harassment campaigns against other fans and against the show runners.

Basically, the toxicity of a fandom = popularity + how networked the toxic people are.

Don't take this to mean you should avoid any fandom, though! In the end, a fandom is about you and the ten other people you scream about it with. Liberally block the people who make you uncomfortable or unhappy or who you disagree with or whose behavior makes you feel unsafe, and you'll have a much more positive experience, no matter where your fandom home is.

Anyway, I had fun with this survey, especially reading peoples' responses. Thanks to everyone who voted and extra to those who reblogged with commentary.

So this poll from @pollsnatural asked if Supernatural was the most toxic fandom people have been in, and the vast majority of folks said no, so now - based on some fandoms in the replies of that post - I'm curious...

I'm curious if there's any Really Big One I should have included (probably MCU...it was hard to juggle "size/popularity of fandom" with "relative toxicity" like if a fandom is huge it's usually just more toxic in general cause there are the same number of weirdos per capita but way more people overall, ya know?)

Fate and Phantasms #148: Jaguar Warrior

Today on Fate and Phantasms we’re making the fast and the furryous Jaguar Warrior, the vessel for an anime girl, and to a lesser extent, a god. Taiga is a Totem Warrior Barbarian for some animal instincts, and a Drunken Master Monk to turn her unorthodox fighting style into a force to be reckoned with.

Race and Background

Taiga’s still mostly Human (er, servant), and we’ll use the variant rules, because feats are fun. This gives you +1 Dexterity, +1 Wisdom, Animal Handling proficiency to watch over Quetz’s pets, and the Mobile feat for ten feet of extra movement speed and the ability to ignore attacks of opportunity from creatures you hit.

You’re technically on the same side as Quetz for this one, so that makes you a Goddess Alliance Legionnaire too, giving you proficiency with Athletics and Intimidation.

Ability Scores

You definitely have some force behind your strikes, but you’re also really mobile, so we’ll start with Dexterity being highest. You’re really mobile, but you also have some force behind your strikes, so Strength is next. Your power partially comes from being a jaguar, so your Wisdom should be next. Your Constitution isn’t bad either- anyone who can survive a direct blow from Quetz is tough. Your Charisma isn’t amazing- you’re quick with a joke, but your main audience isn’t a big fan. Finally, dump Intelligence.

Class Levels

1. Monk 1: Starting as a barbarian would give you a lot more HP, but you only get the first Unarmored Defense you come across, and we like basing our AC off of Dexterity and Wisdom more than constitution. Now you can wear your fancy outfits without worrying too much about dying.

While you’re here though you also get Martial Arts, giving you a baseline of 1d4 damage when using monk weapons. You can also use dexterity instead of strength when using monk weapons, and if you attack with your main action you can make an unarmed attack as a bonus action.

You also gain proficiency with Strength and Dexterity saves, as well as Acrobatics and Stealth.

2. Barbarian 1: Barbarian gives us our real meat an potatoes of combat, with a Rage that you can activate as a bonus action for up to one minute, or until the fighting stops. Currently you can rage twice per long rest, but that will change as you level up.

While raging, you get advantage on strength checks and saves, deal extra damage with strength-based attacks, and have resistance to physical damage.

You also get another Unarmored Defense, but it doesn’t stack with the first, so it’s not that important.

3. Barbarian 2: Your Reckless Attacks make you a terror on the battlefield, giving you advantage on your attacks for a turn in exchange for other creatures having advantage against you for the next round.

You also get a Danger Sense, giving you advantage on dexterity saves against things you can see. You’ll really want to avoid that fireball, burnt fur smells terrible, trust me.

4. Barbarian 3: While you get your power from being a Jaguar Warrior you don’t actually turn into a big cat, so Totem Warrior is probably your best option. When you take the subclass, you become a Spirit Seeker, letting you cast Beast Sense and Speak with Animals as rituals. You also gain a Tiger Totem Spirit, adding 10 feet to your long jump distance and 3 feet to your high jump. Cats got ups.

Finally, you get Primal Knowledge as well, giving you proficiency with Nature checks. You are literally an animal, you know a thing or two about animals.

5. Barbarian 4: Use your first Ability Score Improvement to bump up your Dexterity for more accurate attacks and a higher AC.

6. Barbarian 5: Fifth level barbarians get an Extra Attack each attack action, letting you attack twice per action or three times with your bonus action. You also get Fast Movement, increasing your movement speed by 10 feet.

7. Monk 2: Going back to monk gives you Ki points equal to your monk level each short rest. You can spend them to attack twice, dodge, disengage, or dash on your bonus action.

You also get Unarmored Movement, increasing your speed by another 10 feet, and growing as you level up.

8. Monk 3: Drunken Masters have surprisingly little to do with actual alcohol, and much more to do with acting drunk, which you do every day. You get proficiency with the Performance skill, as well as a Drunken Technique when you use your Flurry of Blows. Attacking twice with your bonus action now comes with the benefits of disengaging, and your walking speed increases by yet another 10 feet.

You can also Deflect Missiles as a reaction, blocking damage from an arrow or thrown weapon. If you reduce it to zero, you can also spend a ki point to throw it at another creature.

9. Monk 4: Use this ASI to bump up your Strength for stronger rage attacks. You can also Slow Fall as a reaction, reducing falling damage thanks to landing on your feet.

You can also spend ki as an action for Quickened Healing for a bit of spirit origin correction.

10. Barbarian 6: Going back into barbarian gives you the Aspect of the Beast, though unfortunately Tiger’s kind of useless to us at this point. Grab Wolf instead for fast paced tracking and normal paced stealthing while traveling.

11. Barbarian 7: Seventh level barbarians get a Feral Instinct, giving you advantage on initiative rolls. You also can ignore being surprised if you rage at the start of combat. If you’re going to overreact in a comedic fashion, it’s best not to overstay your welcome.

You also gain an Instinctive Pounce, letting you move up to half your speed when you enter a rage. Your base speed is currently 60 feet, so that’s not a small jump.

12. Barbarian 8: Use this ASI to bump up your Strength so your rage attacks can match your non-rage attacks, and to further increase the power of your ups.

13. Barbarian 9: Ninth level barbs get a Brutal Critical, giving you an extra die of damage when you deal a critical hit to a creature. You’ve got four attacks per turn with advantage, it’ll happen at some point.

14. Monk 5: Fifth level monks get an extra attack you can’t use, but they also get a Stunning Strike by spending a ki point to force a constitution save (dc 8+wis mod +proficiency) on a creature they’ve hit. On a failure, that creature is then stunned for a round, giving you free advantage against them without having to be reckless about it.

You can also spend ki points on your Focused Aim to try and turn a missed attack into a hit, with each ki point spent adding 2 to the attack roll.

15. Monk 6: Our last round of monk gives you Ki-Empowered Strikes, making your unarmed attacks magical for overcoming resistances. Like half the people you fight in Babylonia are some kind of god, that’ll be useful. You also gain a Tipsy Sway, letting you stand up from being knocked prone for only 5′ of movement and spend ki to redirect attacks that miss you, sending them towards another nearby creature instead as a reaction.

16. Barbarian 10: Tenth level totbars are Spirit Walkers, letting you Commune with Nature as a ritual, giving you near info about the area around you through your Nagual.

You also get another round of Primal Knowledge for Survival proficiency.

17. Barbarian 11: Your Relentless Rage lets you make a DC 10 constitution save when you drop to 0 hp to try and stick around at 1 hp again. Each time you succeed, the DC goes up by 5. After a long rest, the DC resets. Do you want guts? Cus this is how you get guts.

18. Barbarian 12: You may have noticed by now that we haven’t even touched your final ascension. Well no longer! Use your final ASI to become a Master of Disguise, bumping up your charisma score by one, giving you proficiency with the disguise kit, and letting you make a disguise after spending an hour watching a creature and eight hours crafting the disguise. The important thing here is that you can don the disguise in 1 action, letting you quickly change into your “you, but a mafia boss” disguise faster than most people can put on their armor.

19. Barbarian 13: Thirteenth level barbarians get another Brutal Critical, giving you yet another extra die of damage on critical hits.

20. Barbarian 14: Your capstone level grants you a Totemic Attunement, and while the tiger and wolf options are both cool, I think the Eagle totem option suits you the best, giving you a flying speed while raging, with the caveat that you can’t end your turn in mid-air. Before this level, you could jump 56 feet horizontally, and 20 feet vertically. Now you can jump 195 feet in any direction if you use your action and bonus action to dash.

Pros

You’ve got a base speed of 65 feet and the ability to fly for five minutes a day. You’re really, really mobile, is what I’m getting at. Heck, you’re technically better than Quetz at piledriving people, if you really wanted to go that route (don’t tell her I said that).

This also means that, similar to our other cat-themed build, you can combine point one with your burst damage for solid hit and run tactics. You can run in, hit an enemy four times with advantage and suped up crits, and run out past most people’s normal movement range with no problem. That makes you very scary for anything that lacks a ranged attack.

You also come jam packed with a lot of Utility, with plenty of skills and random little bits of knowledge to have use outside of combat.

Cons

Your Ki is very limited, stunting the amount of times you can use flurry of blows to boost your speed and power with flurry of blows.

Master of Disguise is a neat little gimmick for playing to character, but it’s not actually that good for the build. I’d either take the Tough or Resilient feats for the extra not-dying they afford.

Our two big stats for this build are Strength and Dexterity, which have a lot of overlap in their use. We easily could have just focused on dexterity and ignored the bit of damage from rage, and we’d have way more HP and AC to show for it. It’s probably not going to be a huge issue when you’re half a mile from combat anyway, but it’s still something to note.

I know, I know...this isn’t what you wanted to read today, guys. I know it’s offensive and I’m sorry if it made you ill. I also know I’m putting my own blog under fire by showing these images here but I think that should say something about dA’s bad policies that this art gets a filter slapped on it and nothing more when the artist is blatantly pro-fascist.

Crispy resonates with me so much - and no it’s not cause I DARED to be “triggered”.

It’s because, for one, she was talented. I MEAN I HAVE EYES! That’s some nicely drawn digital stuff I’m not gonna deny. She had some cool rewrites and sequel ideas that, had it come from someone else I would have eaten up and faved to hell and back onceupona2012. But I didn’t, where a ton of MLP and furry fans did because they undervalued their own talents and would say “well it’s pretty who cares about the message?”

Unlike so many commercial+published artists, it’s REALLY hard to separate the art from the artist here because the artist is so connected and a part of her art and storytelling. If you fav her art, even if you didn’t like her, that was telling Crispy she’d won. It’s so defeating to have other artists say their gonna ignore their gut for the sake of prettypretty-Don-Bluth style art. And yes, that stigma DOES affect my view on 2D purists btw.

Crispy was so holier than thou’, and that attitude also was appealing to dA folks, not to mention her knowledge of art history by the time she dropped off the radar. Crispy was the kind of person who’d make long, detailed, justified rants against the design and color choices in Hazbin Hotel and then a bunch of antis would eat her redesigns up only to learn the awful truth later and embarrass themselves cuz they were so taken up by the craft they didn’t know they were reblogging a fucking Nazi.

Not to underplay Viv’s wrongdoings of course, but I’m sorry; the two aren’t comparable on the problematic artist meter. THAT’S HOW BAD CRISPY WAS.

If this somehow was just a faze and she’s come to her senses or doesn’t really think this shite she preaches...I don’t care. She said some vile shit and fuck no I’m not forgiving her. It’s like KenDraw or Shadman. You’ve changed your life around and realized you’ve done/drawn nasty shit that’s done real harm? Cool....I’m still not talking or ever promoting you, ya dingbat. You ain’t no Roman Polanski or Doug Tennaple. You’re a singular internet artist and any support of the project has to go to you - and you suck!

ThisCrispyKat was a wakeup call that showed me these people not only still exist but will be allowed to get away with it. I was very touchy bout this kind of thing back in the day. Fuck, I STILL AM TOUCHY. The rabbit holes I found thanks to Crispy opened up to reveal communities where people think my hair color’s going extinct. People would detail how much they wanted to rape me - a natural blonde - and kill my friends and family for not looking like me. That they want to jerk off in my naturally curly hair and see me in glowy German princess gowns preparing them dinner.

Crispy and other Nazistans would look at me; a blond-haired blue eyed Polish/German American woman and think I need to be “fixed” because I DARE to repeat propaganda that the Nazis were bad. They’d call me a traitor for thinking that celebrating the Nazi party ISN’T German pride.

HOW DARE YOU TELL ME THAT’S GERMAN PRIDE! I’LL SHOW YOU GERMAN PRIDE YOU EGOSTROKING-LIMPDICKED ATTENTION WHORES.

People like Crispy make it 1000x harder to actually show interest in German things. Because I AM interested in German shit btw.

Like for real: it’s a country I’d love to visit one day (at least the black forest, which is where my mom’s fam comes from). I love German art and German fairytales slap. I really do want to explore my heritage through art and stuff.

But guess what? Much as Crispy would argue to the contrary I DO know my WWII history and beyond and FUCK YOU if you honestly think jerking it to cuddly Nazi-furs is empowering or just “showing your interest in history”. Take your own advice and read a god-damn book.

TL;DR: I DO NOT have to be proud of Nazis to enjoy German culture and if you think otherwise, FUCK YOU. It’s a slap in the face to everyone even if you are ‘just trolling’ and it in no way values actual German’s feeling on the matter. It’s annoying how people undervalue real people just for the sake of fan art.

The Nazis were evil. They were racist, eugenic-genocidal idiots who killed over six million Jewish people, Romani, Slavs, Jehovahs Witnesses, disabled people, Poles, homosexuals and prisoners of war. They would have killed my dad’s side of the family if they were in Poland at the time. They made bullshit tanks that killed the people making them and didn’t work on the battlefield. Their leader was a fat, farting one-testicaled bastard who preferred animals to people.

They ruined everything for everyone and then took the easy way out, leaving the Germans that were left in the hands of the also-genocidal Soviets and Americans. Germany is still paying their war debts and now, 70-80 years later everyone else wants to laugh off this dark period of history with memes and forget what they did, and as such, are forgetting the victims of the genocide.

I have 0 tolerance for Nazi things for the sake of HUMANITY, let alone the individual groups they target. I don’t have to have German ancestry or know a single Jewish person to tell you any of this. It’s fucking history.

A Beautiful Soul

Interview by Katharina Weiß for myp-magazine (August 19th, 2019).

Norwegian music artist Aurora jumped out of a natural fairytale into our urban world to spread her message of connectedness and love—in a unique and utterly beautiful way.

When Norwegian music artist Aurora Aksnes published her debut album, “All My Demons Greeting Me As Friends,” in 2016, the success was kind of overwhelming. From one day to another, her music has caught the eye of outsiders, light beings, nonbinary people and even mainstream audiences. The result: endless tours and TV appearances.

More noteworthy, however, are the encounters with her fans, who entrust everything to Aurora, bring her gifts wherever she is—from mobile phones to dead insects. In no time, she has been gathering “warriors and weirdos” around her and became a projection screen for so much.

With her third album, “A Different Kind Of Human – Step 2,” Aurora wants to empower every listener for the world we’re living in. Compared to her second record, “Infections Of A Different Kind – Step 1,” the sound became louder, more demanding, and more upright. While the melodies seem more carefree and pleasing, Aurora’s lyrics couldn’t be more pointed: She precisely describes us, our soul life and the way we treat ourselves.

Consuming that album is no less than looking in a mirror while being fully embraced. And meeting Aurora personally is an unusual experience: Her voice is as soft as a mountain spring and her sentences are as light as a natural drug trip. Let’s immerse in the thoughts of this beautiful soul!

"Humans are so diverse, but the world has forgotten that we have to embrace more than one kind.”

Katharina: In the past, you stated that your songs are “more a story of the world’s experiences”—rather than your own. What feelings are attached to that quote?

Aurora: It’s a very emotional world. But it’s not really made for humans like us, for quiet people and weird people. Humans are so diverse, but the world has forgotten that we have to embrace more than one kind. My musical world wants to be a safe place for people where everything is allowed, where you can just exist and be accepted.

“I feel that my followers and I are very equal and full of light.”

Katharina: You have a very strong community of passionate listeners who bring up a lot of personal stories in their comments and posts regarding you. How have you created this followership of “weirdos and warriors?”

Aurora: I did not create anything. It just happened. They did it themselves. I don’t know how we became so many. But now we are this big army of love. I think I try to speak to all of them at the same time and I meet many of them in person. And at my shows, I actually feel them emotionally through their energy. I try to signal them that I want every single one of them to be here with me for experiencing this exact moment, as perfect as it is. I think they know that I appreciate them. It’s magical: We have a very loving relationship. They understand when I am tired, and they respect it. I feel that my followers and I are very equal and full of light.

“It is easier to love yourself when you realize how important you are—and that you have a lot to do in this world.”

Katharina: We always read about people telling us to love ourselves, now it‘s you—but how can we deal with it when we’re failing that task?

Aurora: Failing is good. To embrace that is a very good approach for falling in love with the people around you as well: We are all kind of failures in the process of learning to love ourselves the way we really are. And this unites us. If you just imagine being old and lying on your deathbed, having spent your whole life trying to love yourself—that’s a bit sad, isn’t it? A human life is quite long these days and we have a lot of time to learn about. What can we change and what can we not change? But the most important thing is to learn acceptance. If you are not the way you hoped to be, you are the way you are anyway—don’t waste your valuable energy, spend it on beautiful things! It is easier to love yourself when you realize how important you are—and that you have a lot to do in this world.

"I am very excited for humankind to make itself proud again."

Katharina: You draw major inspiration from nature, so it is no wonder that you also speak up against environmental cruelty. Would you consider yourself an environmental activist?

Aurora: Absolutely. It is the responsibility of all of us to fix what the people before us have damaged—because they did not know what we know now. We have claimed that we are the most intelligent species on the planet. So it’s about time that we act that way. I am very excited for humankind to make itself proud again.

"If you have love in you, you need to share it.”

Katharina: You sound very passionate now. What else makes you so passionate?

Aurora: I am a very thirsty person. Among the many things that make me passionate, making music is the biggest one. When I am in this process, it feels like making love with something divine. Another important topic: respect. To treat all living things equal. No matter of gender or species. And of course: love. If you have love in you, you need to share it. And you should be allowed and proud to do so. We wasted so many years on establishing that only same-sex love is ok. But this worldview will lose in the end.

“When I was little, I was very inwards. I noticed people’s pain and when they tried to hide stories and vulnerability.”

Katharina: How can we imagine your upbringing? Was your environment always so politically aware?

Aurora: When I was little, I was very inwards. I noticed people’s pain and when they tried to hide stories and vulnerability. And I was always interested in the most intimate and personal emotions, especially my own. But I started looking outwards just after I finished my first album, “All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend.” That was when I realized how big the world is. And that there is so much to support. There are issues beyond self-care that we have to fight for. And we have to hold on to our victories. Because some time a man or woman will gain power again and use it to make love and self-empowerment illegal again.

“Growing up in the forest makes you a philosopher."

Katharina: Very true. But back to the first part of the question: How did your childhood look like?

Aurora: I grew up in a very small town. I lived in a fjord. When you translate it, it is called “the fjord of light.” Sounds like a fairytale place, I know. I grew up there with my two sisters and my mum and dad. And we had many cats, they were all grey. We moved there when I was three and for me, it was a true gift. For my older sisters, it must have been a really difficult experience to change all their surroundings, but for me, it was just beautiful. Your eyes can linger and travel over the sea and the mountains when you look out of the window. And behind the house, there was a big forest. I used to play there every day until a big bell next to the house was rang by my parents to tell me that diner was ready. Growing up in the forest makes you a philosopher.

Katharina: Let’s take the time for a philosophical game then. All my next questions are about “last times” in your life. First question: When was the last time you got surprised?

Aurora: I did get surprised when we landed in Oslo recently. It was about packing your suitcase. I opened it and realized: I just packed things that looked good, colorwise. But when I unpacked it, I recognized that I have nothing useful with me. So I had to buy some new panties.

“One night I wrote a song in my dreams.”

Katharina: When was the last time you remembered a dream very well?

Aurora: This morning. I used to have a dream journal and I remember my dreams very well. One night I wrote a song in my dreams. It was the title track from my album “Infections Of A Different Kind – Step 1.” I woke up in the middle of the night and went down to my piano. I pushed the record button on my phone and played the melody. And then I went to bed again.

Katharina: When was the last time you experienced pleasure?

Aurora: This morning. When I masturbated in the hotel room.

Katharina: When was the last time you had to say goodbye to someone—or something?

Aurora: I am often traveling with my sisters. One of them is in town with me right now, but we had to say goodbye to the other one two days ago. It is always sad, even though we are only separated for a little while.

“My supporters are really attracted to me because they resonate with what I say.”

Katharina: When was the last time a listener of your music—I don’t like the word fan—really touched you?

Aurora: I feel this way too, fan sounds so cocky. I have a big issue with it. It is not a fair word to these amazing people. Maybe we can use supporter instead? My supporters are really attracted to me because they resonate with what I say. We are similar people in some ways. Many of them are extremely artistic. Sometimes when I meet a person, they are too excited to talk to me. They can’t say anything. We all know that struggle. But they give me their letters and their words are so poetic and creative. And often I am taken aback when reading it, just thinking: What a beautiful soul!

Looking Inward

Not many mediums, including video games, dabble with mental illness. Even fewer are able to string together a narrative that has it front and centre. If a video game decides to play with the concept madness, it’s often used as a gameplay mechanic to heighten the tension (I’m looking at you Cthulhu!). Usually by adding a sanity gauge that will force the player to juggle between finding ways to reduce it or to slog on as the HUD changes/ control quirks are implemented when the main character is overwhelmed by all the fish people they see or the great unknowable squid face monster in the distance. Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, however, is one of those rare gems of a game that actually explores mental illness - in particular, psychosis - in a meaningful way from both a narrative and gameplay perspective in order to tell a gripping story of loss and grief.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice puts players into the skin of a Pict warrior called Senua. She is on a journey into Helheim in a last desperate bid to rescue her dead love Dillion. As the game unfolds, we find out more about her life and the events leading up to her quest. Accompanying both the player and Senua on this adventure are a host of disembodied voices. Some of them are helpful, particularly in combat as they provide warnings when enemies attack. Others serve to pull Senua down, questioning her every move and action.

It was a strange experience to have these voices providing a running commentary as I made my way through the game. I will admit that I knew some of the voices intimately. They being part of my own internal dialogue.

I know it would have better served me to strap on a pair of headphones, but I still found it fascinating to have these voices whisper from my television as I delved deeper into Senua’s story.

One important thing I managed to grasp from the game was that our perception of the world differs. A person might think in sentences and words, yet another would do so through a visual spectrum. Synesthesia is a condition where people can see words as specific colours. Someone else could be colour-blind. Those with imagination might see more than a fluffy white cloud or faces in even the simplest of pattern configurations.

With Senua, though, her psychosis allows her to see hallucinations, to endure flashbacks and to see strange runic symbols in the world around her. But even though what she sees might be different from what someone else experiences does not discount the world she lives in or her perception of it. As gamers, particularly, we often internalise the limitations and rules of the game world in order to proceed. To open a door, we intuitively know that we need a key. That key, however, could be a set of runes. It could be a switch. Or perhaps it might be a secret incantation or pass phrase.

As such, I found Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice an empowering experience that helped challenge how I saw the world around me. All of us contain a strange set of beliefs even if it makes no sense. Take superstitions for example. Why should a black cat crossing your path constitute bad luck?

In any case, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice immediately had me invested with its delightful anecdotes of Norse mythology. Long time readers will know that I’ve always been a fan of myths and any game featuring them have always tickled my interest.

The combat, too, was serviceable. Strangely enough, I found that I played much more defensively than I usually did in such games as parrying proved to be quite an important facet of quickly taking down opponents. While I usually prefer dodging, the camera feels a little constrained. For those that decide to pick up the title, make sure that any any all enemies are in front of you and keep your back to the wall so that they won’t target you from behind.

I will admit, though, that it took me a while to pick up the game. For a while after it was released, I had read that the game would delete your save if you died too many times. This was made manifest by the rot travelling along Senua’s arm. As someone who has avoided difficult games such as Dark Souls, this made me hesitant to try it on until I learned that this too was a ploy by the developers. One should not always believe the things that appear before their eyes. Doubly so when it comes to video games and the way they play with expectations.

Overall, Senua’s Sacrifice was a great side morsel and one that I had my eye on for quite a while. Hopefully there are more games that come out that put a stronger focus on mental illness. Video games, in particular, are such a great medium to explore these themes because of their interactive nature.

Warrior cats is garbage here is why (Edited: now with racism rant)

For several years majority of us who are in this fandom have read a lot of these books and when we were young we used to praise them as great works of fiction and really cool for any cat lover so much so that we made little animated music videos of these fictional cats in their fictional world.

However it’s time for those rose tinted goggles to come off as we need to talk about how warrior cats is a garbage series and how it can be fixed but it won’t be because the Erins are not listening to us in all actuality.

Continuity what’s that?: The writer’s don’t know either

So Warrior Cats has a lot of books, I mean tons that you would think that they would have a good sense of continuity. Let me tell you something my friend continuity does not exist in these books. Some cats will have the wrong pelt colors, names will be badly spelled, and don’t get me started on characters coming back to life (Literally). The most prominent example of these continuity errors would have to be Clawface who dies in the book “Fire and Ice.” but then comes back to life a book that is between “Forest of Secrets” and “Rising Storm.” You might be asking yourself “Why are there so many continuity and mistakes in the series Catie?” Well the thing about most book series is that the authors probably have a backlog of what is canon and the continuity of the series in general.

However it seems the Erins do not have this as they seem to be writing the books very carelessly which brings a lot of problems with it. Sure this is a series for children but that does not mean you get to be lazy with your continuity or editing. Frankly if I were in charge I would have the Erins write down everything they are going to write in the future into a book for continuity sake. That way we don’t have cats being misgendered or coming back to life however there might not even be a good source of continuity when the Erins keep having different opinions over which cat becomes mates with which cat (we are going to get back to the Erin’s bickering later though) The same happened with Dovewing’s eyes and everyone threw a massive shit fit over that… Maybe in the future this problem will be fixed but lord knows that will happen....

Incest is wincest: The Erins creepy obsession with mates and incest

I don’t think I have to make this any simpler but DON’T FUCK YOUR COUSIN! I don’t think has been iterated enough to the Erins and i’m fucking impress the editor has caught only instance of this when there are several instances of this shit. The most recent which had me seething was Ivypool and Fernsong, we literally had an arc about pretty much how Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Dovewing are all kin of Firestar and that Ivypool (Dovewing’s sister) and Fernsong (Lionblaze’s son) are literally cousins! Like not even distant cousins! Yet Kate Cary did not find that a little weird… We then have Dustpelt and Ferncloud who are related (Dustpelt being Ferncloud’s uncle) Let us not forget that Willowpelt and Patchpelt who are SIBLINGS also be come mates and had Greystripe. Oh and don’t get me started on how Sandstorm’s half brother was hitting on her daughter! You could always put in the notion “But Catie they are just cats what is wrong with incest.” and I have to say that we can’t keep crying that when this is a fantasy in which cats are organised, have their own religion, and have their own myths and traditions. These are anthropomorphized cats and this is also a children’s book. The Erins should not have so much incest in a children’s book of all things but they have done much worse so I don’t put it against them.

However let's talk about the near graphic depictions of childbirth these books have. These authors have a weird obsession over pregnant cats and giving us wonderful imagery of these cats giving birth. Like think about it for a split second how many graphic depictions of birth do you read in a warrior cats book. However the weird thing about the Erins is how the she cats keep getting younger when they get pregnant have y’all noticed that. Violetshine who was just named a warrior suddenly gets pregnant and has kids. Mothflight who was a brand new medicine cat gets pregnant as well and has some kits. (Mothflight is probably the worst mother though because she gave away a kit who literally drowned and might have PTSD to a clan that swims like it would be interesting to see where that goes but I doubt the Erins would ever go down that path) there is also Star Flower who is impregnated by Clear Sky and his son Thunder was lusting over this she cat and it’s really weird and I don’t get it…

Either way the Erins are very creepy with this stuff and let’s just leave it at that (Of now…)e

Death of the author: The Erins should not dictate canon unless it’s in the books:

Time to get to the most important point in this whole entire rant that is address to the wiki in particular. It’s time to commit to death of the author because if we want to determine what is canon and what is not we need to do this action.

To the people who have no idea what “Death of the author.” is it’s when we decide that what the authors say outside of the books should not be canon because these writers are doing nothing but harm if we keep having their words be the word of gospel because from what you can tell the Erins are not that good with continuity and have even started several fan wars. One of the most prominent examples of when we needed to commit “Death of the author” the most though was with warriors superfan Su Susan. Su Susan helped fill the wiki pages however giving a super fan that much power is going to lead to a lot of wars between fans and we already have enough to bicker about. Yeah it’s interesting to see who Swiftpaw’s siblings are or who the rest of Princess’s kits are but if you give a superfan the power to change possible canon then it becomes a problem and what makes me a little ticked off is that a wiki that is suppose to give us official information followed this superfan’s word which is a giant problem.

You guys have to be more critical of what you accept what is canon and what is not guys or else we are going to face even more problems in the warriors fandom in general.

The part where I talk about Ableism from the Erins

Yeah not fancy title here because what the erins do to disabled cats is kind of disgusting. The cats who have disabilities in this book series really get shit on like a lot. Then again it does not help that the first disabled cats we meet are named One-eye and Halftail. That’s not even the beginning of all of the bad names these cats get for having a disability we got Deadfoot, Crookedjaw, White-eye, Runningnose, and Lostface. Most of these are renames too like what is with these leaders and allowing these names to exist or should I say why is the editor allowing this shit in the first place? Sure most of these guys get high ranks and that’s fine but do they have to have such awful names and don’t get me started on Rainflower and how badly she treated Crookedstar. Even worse is probably Brokenstar who got ridiculed by his whole entire clan for having a broken tail like why do the Erins write this shit… Let’s not forget all the disable cats that became medicine cats. The most prominent being Cinderpelt and Jayfeather one being crippled by a car and the other being blind.

It would have been so interesting to have a cat like Cinderpelt despite her injuries rise up and become a warrior after he leg injury because that would have showcased a strong female character despite her being crippled by a car instead what do the Erins do? “Let’s make her a medicine cat and then reincarnate her and then not even do that and just let her spirit be possessed by this cat.” Oh yes that’s definitely what I want to see instead of something empowering to give to all of the female audiences that are reading this series which seems to be the majority of warrior cats fans!

Then there is Jayfeather who is blind and pretty much get shucked into the role of medicine cat apprentice which fucking sucks because a blind warrior would have been a cool concept as well. Like imagine all these cool concepts that could have happened in warriors but did not because The Erins didn’t even think of the possibility. Another possibility for a blind warrior before even Jayfeather would have been Longtail but that was also wasted potential too. Then we finally get to the most wasted potential and possible good representation for disabled people if The Erins had not killed her off Briarlight. Briarlight is pretty much oozing with potential to be a good storyline about a warrior who overcomes her disability and helps her clan in some way. Hell you could have made her a mediator it would have been a perfect role for her as it would give Briarlight something to do besides be the medicine cat assistant. Then in the most “Fuck you.” moment they kill her off because of course we can’t have a cat with such a crippling disability be useful… I also forgot to mention Snowkit who was deaf but didn’t matter if would get a deaf warrior who could possibly use sign language let’s just send a hawk in to kill the kit!

This is how ableist the Erins are when they won’t let us have any good representation when they won’t let a fully blind cat be a warrior or even a deaf cat. However it seems The Erins don’t seem really into that and would rather have warriors be normal cats without any disabilities which is wrong.

She cats are dispensable: The Erins are sexist

Yes despite there being a lot of women in the writing process of this series the series seems to really love killing off mainly she cats. (This also might be why we keep getting a lot of incest) There are very few she cats that really live for a very long time hell sometimes they will even kill off she cats with major storylines off book or you will find out about their deaths in their super editions or novellas if you read those. The most notorious currently is Leafpool in the most recent novel as we barely get any mention of her at all and yet her death has impacted the clans but when you don’t let us see her die or even let us say goodbye to a character until another couple of months people are going to get pissed. Hell Hollyleaf’s death was another example of people getting pissed at the Erins as you just introduced her in one book only to kill her off in the next. Needletail who should have been a way more prominent character in Vision of Shadows gets killed off way too early as well as I believe she did not get enough character development for me to really like her all that much. Silverstream, Spottedleaf, Ferncloud, and Sorreltail are probably the most prominent of characters that should not have died so soon because there could have been some interesting plot development with these cats.

Even Bramblestar in Bramblestar’s storm talks about there are very few she cats left in his clan. Maybe it’s because The Erins just keep killing she cats who have potential to be good characters if they didn’t keep shanking them with their writing knives. It’s disgusting how many times we get she cats who are strong and powerful who then get shanked by the Erins everytime the plots needs to move on. Sandstorm was killed off to “Lessen the load.” Spottedleaf was killed off so “Firestar did not have to choose in starclan.” Hollyleaf did because “She made the ultimate sacrifice.” these deaths are preventable and provide nothing to the reader at all but disappointment and anger.

We still have some interesting she cats like Mothwing, Tawnypelt, Mistystar, and Squirrelflight but lord knows when they are going to get the knife as well…

You are going to love these characters: Erins have made some really bad characters

Welcome to the several hundred take on why Ashfur is a bad character for so many reasons even though I can now do you a couple better. Let’s just start with Ashfur because he is one of the easier cats to point out The Erin’s shit writing. First of all Ashfur starts out as friends with Squirrelflight and they get close but I think we all knew she was going to end up with Bramblestar eventually. However instead of acting like a normal person during a breakup Ashfur goes straight to 11. Ashfur sets up a trap to MURDER Squirrelflight’s father and when that didn’t work he tried to murder her adopted children (Another thing The Erins seem to hate is adopted families) still Ashfur goes to Starclan because he “Loved too much.” you can clearly see the problem here… How about a cat who complains about their fucking leg being crushed DARK FOREST BITCH that’s what happened to Lilywhisker when one The Erins confirmed that but was quickly revoked because that gives us even more questions about Starclan and whoever is judging the cats up there needs a fucking intervention.

Onestar fucking Onestar… there is so much wrong with this cat that even I was like “Mudclaw would have been a better leader than this asshole.” Onestar decides to be mates with a random kittypet and then when it’s time to move he doesn’t allow his son to be in the clans and prevent pretty bad disaster from happening. Demanded more than he rightfully deserved because of his status as a leader and being a general dick to Firestar along with dissing him off. You expect me to accept his apology for doing all of this shit only for him to drown to death and calling it “Heroic.” fuck no Erins Onestar deserved that because he no longer was leading that clan because Onestar is the worst character in the warrior cats series because The Erins decided to shit on Onestar’s character I would rather read a fanfic where Mudclaw was leader cause he probably would not be doing this shit.

Spottedleaf’s Heart: The worst book in warriors so far

Alright let’s rip the bandage off because you all knew this book was going to come into the discussion some how and we need to talk about this like grown people because this is where I pretty much stopped reading the series. Vicky who wrote the book as written a book where the lesson that was learned here was “It’s okay to groom a child and force them down a path they don’t want to go on.” This book is the worst offender of how shitty The Erins are in my opinion when they themselves even after Vicky left did not denounce this awful book and made it noncanon because frankly this book is the only book in my opinion that I am convinced is non canon because of how disgusting it is. Vicky retired when this book got the much need criticism and backlash it needed but sadly because Vicky retired we will probably never get a statement about possibly making this one story non canon because frankly children should not be reading that kind of stuff especially when it is written so poorly.

So just to summarize The Erins are currently saying “Child grooming is okay.” to their readers and not even think “Hey maybe we should have Spottedpaw talk to a grown up about this stuff and maybe get her out of this situation” that would have been a great idea but no body decided that was a good idea.

The tribe of racism: How The Erins are really fucking racist

This is an edited in part because after thinking it through and someone having opened my eyes about this I was shocked that I did not think about this when I initially posted the essay. Let’s talk about racism in the warrior cats series.

The clan cats will be coded white

Susan and Jacques coded hispanic

other rogues, loners, and kittypets can be coded as other minorities as well.

Now warrior cats has a white savior complex because The Tribe cats cannot defend themselves without the clan cats apparently because they had to be saved from a giant lion and a bunch of rogues along with there being a panic over who the next leader should be. The Erins pretty much wrote native Americans as “Confused defenceless people who don’t know what to do against really bad threats.” despite surviving for 60 YEARS. I would love to see a book on the tribe being strong cats but The Erins don’t want to do that as it would be “Too boring and there would be few cats.” like wtf Erins the tribe of rushing would be very interesting and would introduce us to different customs maybe even learn about how their religion works. When we do get a POV of a tribe of rushing water cat they all immediately leave the mountains to go to the forest so we can’t have a proper POV of the Tribe of rushing water’s life.

Bloodclan though has a very different problem from The tribe of rushing water. These guys are coded black as they seem to have some sort of organized gang and judging by how racist the Erins are it would not be too far from the case to believe that they are an African american street gang/mafia (They could also be a form of an Italian mafia as well which is still bad) however the gang after being led from their city to the clan territory they are quickly killed off by the “Superior clan cats.” who once again are coded white. You can see where this is going the white people killing off and disbanding an African American street gang. If this sounds familiar that’s because it happened to the black panther party a group of African Americans who wanted to defend themselves only to be killed off and tortured by the very white government.

Now you can argue with me that Jaques and Susan are not hispanic however they are pretty much very muscular and are bullies to the clan cats. They also killed Talonpaw and are then confronted by the clans and are quickly defeated. These two kittypets while this is going to be a stretch are most likely based on the hispanic stereotype of how they are quick to anger and are super macho. As secrets of the clans states “They are both Hostile and dangerous, with no warrior code to guide their actions.”

Then there are the rogues, loners, and kittypets who the very white clans constantly insult and are pretty terrible to despite their kindness. The only clan that is very accepting of rogues and even lets them stay in their camp in Windclan. Even cats who originally did not have racial prejudice suddenly have it and get very angry over having to welcome a new warrior in (Oh no more people to help you defend your clan how terrible!) All in all The Erins are pretty racist writers which is great to stack up with the other shit they have done as well...

In Conclusion

The Erins currently are really bad writers and as it currently stands people. I recommend to stop reading the warrior cats series as I believe it’s only going to get worse from here. I would instead focus my attention at fan works which have a far better continuity and even though there are some great books after Dawn of the clans I think Dawn of the clans is like the best ending to read and warriors and the Erins should have stopped there and then just did super editions and novellas.

CBR10 Review #10: Breath of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

Breath of Fire is the second book in Amanda Bouchet's Kingmaker Chronicles series.

This novel picks up moments after the end of book one with our heroine, Catalia Fisa, healing from deadly wounds. She has a knack for playing fast and loose with her life, much to the chagrin of her lover Griffin. Cat is the Kingmaker, she can detect lies from anyone. Possession of her is quite handy for anyone in power. Cat's mother, Alpha Fisa, would rather manipulate her powers to maintain her iron fist upon the realm. She is basically magical Mommie Dearest. But Cat can steal magic even from fire from dragons to fight against her! Pretty neat, huh?

Cat only risks danger to save the people she loves, which has grown exponentially since the start of book one. She ran away from her kingdom of Fisa to hide amongst a magical circus with characters and powers alluded to in Greek mythology. Griffin disrupted Cat's semi-peaceful existence to drag her back to his kingdom of Sinta. Griffin and his family want Cat's help who to unite people within the realm of Thalyria. He didn't really ask, more so kidnapped her. One my peeves with the first book is his Alpha Male tendencies. Eventually, Cat joined their cause willingly when she recognized the Sintan royals truly want to help people rather than rule upon them. Also, Cat's mother sent magical creatures to attack them doesn't exactly entice a homecoming reunion.

Cat and Griffin fell in love in A Promise of Fire, but Breath of Fire solidifies their romance. Things start off a bit rocky because they both are stubborn and love to toss out ultimatums like candy. Eventually, they find their equilibrium. However, before they can live happily ever after, they must protect their kingdom from encroaching enemies in Tarva. And let's not forget Cat's mom in Fisa. Together with their band of warriors, they set off on an epic journey to beg the Ipotane, Centaur-like creatures, to protect the borders of Sinta. This journey extends into Odyssey-esque quests for Gods and battling mythical creatures like The Hydra. Luckily, Cat's Grandpa is Zeus, so she literally has the Gods on her side. That doesn't make the journey any less dangerous. Cat also wrestles with prophesied destiny: to rule all of Thalyria. The fate of the realm in her hands terrifies her. Much of the novel is her personal journey to understand her heritage and embrace her strengths.

I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to read the next book, Heart on Fire. I pray Cat will kick her mom's ass by the end of the trilogy. Her mom is really an awful sociopath who would sacrifice her own blood to save herself. Cat and Griffin's romance hit an unexpected wall at the start of the book. At first, it threw me for a loop and had me wary of Griffin's character development. But Bouchet deftly steered them through their emotional crisis to become even more bonded. Besides their steamy romance, Bouchet really kicked the mythical action into overdrive. Cat and Griffin are push their physical limits several times over the course of the book. However, they realize only together can they complete these epic some would say impossible tasks. Instead of sacrifice, they refuse to give in and leave destiny to the Gods who empower them to survive.

I highly recommend this book for fans of Game of Thrones who seek a non-doomed romance in their fantasy epic adventures. Book one is mandatory reading before delving into book two.

Hopscotch Kick Off (Part 1)

As September inches closer by the day, the city of Raleigh starts to prepare itself for that one magical weekend of the month known as Hopscotch Music Festival. This weekend, happening Sept. 7-10, takes over downtown Raleigh as music fans from just about everywhere descend upon the city’s many venues, some even makeshift just for the festival. We here at WKNC look forward to the festival every single year and would like to share with you some of our most anticipated acts for this year in our special Hopscotch kickoff!

Run the Jewels

Over the past four years, Hip-Hop has been turned on it’s head by the genre’s super-duo Run the Jewels. Comprised of emcee Killer Mike and producer/emcee El-P, the pair have created an undeniable sound for themselves that originates in their self-titled debut, and has been reinvented twice over on their 2nd and 3rd LP’s. But even more exciting than their studio albums, is the sheer legendary live performance that Run the Jewels has put on for fans all over the country. It only makes sense that Hopscotch would want in on this action, and out of all the amazing acts on the festival’s line-up this year, I am most excited to see RTJ hit the stage.

My favorite tracks from each album include “Banana Clip feat. Big Boi” (Run the Jewels), “Love Again” (Run the Jewels 2), and “Legend Has It” (Run the Jewels 3).

Killer Mike has always been a staple lyricist in Hip-Hop, representing a unique spin on the Atlanta-sound. But after having El-P produce his 2011 album R.A.P. Music, and featuring on El-P’s album Cancer 4 Cure, the two realized the chemistry was perfect, and they toured together to promote these projects. This of course led to 2013’s first release under their new moniker, Run the Jewels. Ever since, they have put on unbelievable live performances, arguably thriving the most successfully at festivals (which is good news for Hopscotch goers).

As Underground Music Director, I have of course promoted every Run the Jewels project, and they continue to be in regular rotation at WKNC, because they encompass the ultimate “Hip-Hop” sound, yet they also reshape it. This year’s performance will be a special treat for me, as I have yet to see them live. The exciting part about seeing a duo is the way they transfer energy back and forth throughout their performance, and I can only assume they have mastered their craft over the last 4 years of touring together. To me, the show just might be, as Run the Jewels would put it, a “Christmas F**king Miracle!”

Run the Jewels will be performing Friday night at 8pm at Red Hat.

Cherry Glazerr

Los Angeles’s Cherry Glazzerr is upbeat indie rock with garage rock, punk, and synth pop influences. The band features songwriter Clementine Creevy on guitar and vocals, Tabor Allen on drums, Sasami Ashworth on synth and formed in 2012 when Creevy was just fifteen years old. Their music is an honest display of self expression and offers a modern spirit of the rriot girl movement with frontwoman Clementine’s songwriting themes of feminism and empowerment which can especially be heard in their second album Apocalipstick which came out earlier this year.

Tracks like “Nurse Ratched” feature upbeat garage rock influenced guitar laced in synth, powerful drums, and strong smooth vocals with socially charged lyrics “She’s a wild one in a land that’s supposed to be free”.

Other tracks have a more self reflective feel such as “Told You I’d Be With the Guys” a reflection of youthful friendships. As well as a more punk influenced sound as Clementine croons with the ferocity of Kathleen Hanna (Bikini Kill) “ I told you, I told you I’d be with the guys, but I know better now than to be with the guys”. Apocalipstick was recorded with the talent of Joe Chicarelli (White Stripes, The Shins, The Strokes) and Carlos de la Garza (Bleached, M83, Tegan and Sara) and released on Secretly Canadian! records.

They are a band not to miss at Hopscotch and will be closing out the Pour House at 12am with a energetic, head-banding, feel good, empowering set.

Pie Face Girls

Raleigh based trio Pie Face Girls is comprised of Dani Hoffpauir on lead vocals and guitar, Tiffany Huff on bass and Klay Misenheimer on drums. Kicking off the high-energy lineup at Pour House on Saturday, they are sure to cause a stir. Their music is politically motivated with goals aligned against the patriarchy, the “alt-right” and any of their sympathizers. Join these warriors as they tear Trump a new one whilst infecting onlookers with the urge to aggressively move their bodies in solidarity. Their sound is very pop-punk and energizing, some of my favorite songs are “Get On The Floor”, “Dude Yr Girlfriend Sux” and their Peaches cover of “Fuck the Pain Away” (found of their Bandcamp). The Pour House is THE venue to attend Saturday of Hopscotch, with Pie Face Girls getting things started at 9PM and Cherry Glazerr ending the night at midnight.

I have already seen serpentwithfeet open for Perfume Genius at Cat’s Cradle, but his performance was transformative for me; Josiah Wise, the artist behind the enigmatic music project, weaves together R&B and gospel, creating songs that sound like prayers. Wise is able to piece together the experience of queer love and heartbreak in both a theatrical and intimate way for his listeners. I’m excited to see what he brings to the stage for Hopscotch, since his stage presence demands to be felt, and I couldn’t get enough of his voice. One of the songs I’m most excited to hear (again) is “four ethers” ,an orchestral masterpiece filled with runs of Wise’s voice. During his actual performances, he tend to improvise a lot of his runs, making every show a unique experience.

Madame Gandhi

You probably heard about the woman who free-bled at the London Marathon, right? She’s also a really neat musician and activist named Madame Gandhi, and she’s playing Hopscotch! Although it was tough to choose with the lineup this year, I’m probably most excited to see Madame Gandhi because I’ve been following her for a couple of years now, and she’s inspired me the whole time. She went on a world tour drumming for M.I.A. while simultaneously attending Harvard Business School through 2015, and she released her first EP, Voices, in late 2016. Additionally, she works with Thinx, a company which makes period underwear, and AfriPads, which produces reusable menstrual pads for people who do not have such products readily accessible. If you’re interested in activism, electronic music, hip-hop, and/or lyrics that *really make you think*, give Voices a listen! The EP is more relaxed than most music that I listen to, but I really enjoy the arrangements throughout it. I’m eager to see what her music is like live and to hear what she has to say. She plays on Friday, September 8, at 11:30pm at Nash Hall. Top tracks include “The Future is Female” and “Yellow Sea,” but they’re definitely all worth checking out!

The Make-Up

When Hopscotch 2017’s lineup came out, there are obviously going to be bands that everyone more or less knows. Then there are those bands that one must discover before the festival. For me, that band was The Make-Up. For many, this band might be one of those bands everyone knows, if you’re of a certain age. The Make-Up released their first album Destination: Love- Live! at Cold Rice the year I was born on the infamous punk/hardcore label Dischord Records. Funny enough, this album isn’t exactly what one might think of when they hear the words punk/hardcore. This album was released on Dischord given the band’s interesting history. Frontman Ian Svenonius and multiple other members of the Make-Up made up 80’s notorious DC hardcore band The Nation of Ulysses. Politically, both bands share a very similar message. Sonically, they are in two different playing fields. The Make-Up will be a band to witness this September at Hopscotch as politics are their bread and butter, right next to making a unique blend of funky, gospel tinged post-punk. They wear their communist, leftist leanings well on their sleeves and are sure to have a few things to say about the current political landscape plaguing America right now. Rest assured, they will still sound amazing with their special live show that calls for audience participation and takes many cues from gospel performances. Be sure to familiarize yourself with this band as they take the City Plaza stage Friday night right before local legends Future Islands.

You know how you'll see that a pet, or movie, or character, or something saved a person's life? Well, I'm going to tell you about how my life has been getting saved for two years now. About four years ago, I called the police on my father because he crossed the line. He called my mum bad things and rubbed toilet paper on her head, even lightly yanked her ponytail, not enough to hurt, but still. He spent the night at the station, and was released the next day. After that, we all split off, me going with my mum. My mum, sister, nephew, and I shared an apartment for a year, maybe a little less or more, until we couldn't afford it. We split up again. From then, December 8th, 2014, until April 1st of this year, my mum and I were stuck in a room in one of my aunts' house. There was no air conditioning, no installation, three fans to keep us going, mind you, I'm in Florida. Three younger second-cousins, cousin, cousin-soon-to-be-in-law, sugar gliders, three dogs (one my own), and three cats (one was my own). Living conditions were unbearable, the actual treatment from the others was like my mum and I were garbage. The first year was fine, but then my aunt tried to control me like the others that lived in the house. In case you know nothing about me: I'm a humble being who seeks equality amongst all humans, and I'm a very passive person, but when someone dares attempt to challenge me, then I fight with my heart and soul, and it ends with either me winning or a fair tie where we live in peace. My aunt tried to control me, I refused to let that happen, she didn't like that I refused to submit, and everything went down hill. I didn't eat right and very little. I stayed up past midnight every night when it wasn't a school night. It all started taking a toll on me. I got thoughts and dreams of violence, and more than once did I go temporarily insane, but luckily I never did anything when I did lose it. I wanted nothing more than to die, or cease existing, or harm myself, or harm other people; but every urge I got to grab the scissors, I resisted. Then, it was the summer of 2015. I discovered Hamilton the Musical via a Warrior Cats AMV, and after that, I listened to the entire Soundtrack. I fell instantly in love. I related to Alexander Hamilton on a form of personal level. Here I was stuck in this bad place, and I thought to myself: If Alexander Hamilton could get out of the hole he was confined, then so could I. The music empowered me, each and every lyric encouraging me to carry on. "I can do this. I will get out of this." The songs "Alexander Hamilton", "My Shot", "You'll Be Back", "Wait For It", "History Has Its Eyes On You", "Non-Stop", "Hurricane", "Burn", "Blow Us All Away", "The World Was Wide Enough", and "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story" were how I kept going. I was, am, in a way, my own modern day version of Alexander Hamilton. I am Alexander, I am not throwing away my shot, I just have to wait for it, history has its eyes on me, I must be non-stop, I'm stuck in my own hurricane, I'll watch my enemies burn, I will blow you all away, the world is wide enough, and hopefully my story gets told. To this day, Hamilton is how I stay alive.

Fake Sonic Movie Trilogy SCU

12:29 pm so I didn’t copy and post this for some hours. A bit nervous also took a shower and well hold myself up in my room cause cleaning ladies are here. Really I was nervous and just remember like the title says this is mainly fake. Including to have some fun. I was watching some Sonicguru. But God damn two bags of popcorn and four Diet Dr. Pepper’s checked with left hand the four isn’t finished get and cleaning ladies are here man. So got tags down and put Sonic Boom as the first tag by mistake yet put sonic the hedgehog twice.

Again this is all fake just I hear Sonicguru’s voice I’m just swaying back and forth standing. 12:32 pm

Starting this at 6:42 it’s 6:43 am for a few seconds….gonna say nervous mainly and…hope I can reblog this to Tumblr. Yet I’ve been wanting to make this for a long time. In 2019 a movie based upon the Sonic franchise is slated for release. Announced on June 10th 2014 and has been delayed to 2016 to 2018 to now 2019. It is being produced by Neal Moritz on his Original Film banner alongside Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi. Toby Ascher is executive producing, and the film is being written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux. It is being produced as a joint venture between Sony Pictures and Marza Animation Planet. The film will be a live-action and CGI hybrid. The movie is scheduled to premiere in 2019 with Tim Miller as the executive producer alongside with his Blur Studio collaborator Jeff Fowler set to direct the film.

Mainly in secret and due to the public demanding of more info. Things have been changing a bit. Including plans of what’s beyond the movie. Yet the focus being centered on the first film.

What’s been going on is plans are changing a bit such as a person only known as, “GeekGem” with a part of his name sake being a fan of Steven Universe yet also a geek. A fan of the Sonic franchise. Has been brought onto mainly the writing table. To discuss plans for the Sonic franchise on the big screen which will surprise everyone. Whether Sonic fan or not. Including talking about and announcing certain things no one might be expecting.

“I’ve been a long time fan of Sonic. Even if their have been at times I haven’t been. Yet it’s a franchise I honestly like a lot. The idea of Sonic having a cinematic movie to me is a dream come true. Along with working on it, it’s amazing. Including because you need the right kind of people with talent. We honestly want to change things. Including since this is a movie based upon a video game series. We want to show even me just make a great movie. Theirs a lot more surprises too” - GeekGem.

Their have been talks of a trilogy which is reasonable for certain franchises yet also the talks of a Sonic Cinematic Universe which GeekGem named it the SCU similar to that of MCU and DCEU.

Even talks of GeekGem wanting to bring aboard Zack Snyder for possible directing yet with a writers help if he’s not too busy.

Including now a synopsis for the first film that people have been waiting for.

Sonic The Hedgehog or just Sonic. One of the working titles Sonic The Blue Blur yet the name needs to be understandable.

Info: Rediscover the gaming legend known as Sonic The Hedgehog in this epic film reintroducing the character to mass audiences.

The world’s changing as the arrival of a blue hedgehog known as Sonic, a being with super Sonic speed as his power. Including at the same time his recent enemy he’s been fighting for some time Dr. Ivo Robotnik or Eggman which Sonic insults him by saying that, has been rising up each more after each loss. This time plans something bigger.

Sonic along with the help of his friend Tails, Amy Rose, and an autistic young adult human named Gabriel who has the skills of a soldier. Along with others they must stop Robotnik before he unleashes what is possibly his most dangerous plan to have this Death Egg. Along with surviving against a warrior named Knuckles working with Robotnik. With also what is Robotnik’s greatest creation Metal Sonic. More then a robotic copy, but a robot built with the sole purpose to kill Sonic. Who goes beyond his regular programming and realizes how important of who is the real Sonic.

Prepare for a story about courage, family, and what it means to do the right thing despite facing something corrupted, brutal, and beyond anything or anyone has ever faced. Including what it truly means to be a hero.

Cast: Ryan Reynolds as Sonic and Metal Sonic, Tom Holland as Gabriel Garfield, Jeffery Dean Morgan as Dr. Ivo Robotnik/Eggman, Anna Kendrick as Amy Rose, Grant Palmer as Miles Tails Prowler, John Boyega as Knuckles, Catherine Taber, Collin Dean, Patti LuPone.

Other cast members in talks and possibilities. Such as Ben Affleck, Della Saba, Henry Cavill, Deedee Magno Hall, Lisa Hannigan, Kimberly Brooks, Noel Wells, and more. Mainlys actors and actresses for new characters. Including mainly looking at actors and actresses from cartoons such as Steven Universe and The Loud House and other cartoons to go with stars mainly from other movies. Also mainly plans for the SCU Sonic Cinematic Universe.

Including it’s confirmed that the film will be animated. Mainly CGI with some 2D involved. It depends on how it’s done.

“I feel like with the first movie you need to focus on the first movie first, so you don’t get distracted by the bigger picture. The thing we’re focused on it making a great movie based upon a video game. Along with the first I wanna set up this idea. Sonic is still a character but what he means. The way he is, along with his attitude. It’s the positivity he brings. He brings this hope to people.

Including his actions and words how they change and empower people around him. They inspire them to do something good or better. Including it gives a challenge when Robotnik, Metal Sonic, and anyone Sonic and others will meet in their life will make them question and challenge their beliefs. Yet also thrusting throw the toughest of challenges.

Sonic God Of Destruction.

Info: A year has passed since the events of the Death Egg being destroyed. Sonic is now a world renowned hero. Yet as time passes people start questioning even official’s and world leaders question this one idea.

Do we really need a Sonic the hedgehog.

Including the mass destruction caused at many places, and Metal Sonic existing because of Sonic, including Metal Sonic still being out there. With Robotnik still doing terrorist attacks which Sonic and others stop.

Yet the blame is mainly on Sonic. Including as he has interfered with official matters.

Now with a being know as Chaos the God Of Destruction, a creature made out of water. Unleashed by Robotnik and hoping to get the Chaos Emeralds which they still wonder about but they mainly give power.

But during all of this. With some of the world now watching him, and actually critizing him. This time despite being full of confidence. Now starts to question if he should even try anymore if people are blaming him for these messes and not siding with officials. Even if he’s admitted to them that he’s saved their lives.

As it goes on, with learning what Chaos is, and the rise of a robot named E-102 Gamma. Including visions of a girl named Tikal he and others have. Including why Chaos wants to destroy the world.

As it goes down, and the countdown to Chaos begins, they will realize that we might need a Sonic the hedgehog, along with maybe a bit more positivity in our lives. Including other ways instead of violence of what else we can do.

Big the cat’s voice has not been chosen due to not finding someone who fits the role. Yet Big is still in the movie. But his role not as BIG a joke there is not a huge one yet with the story focusing on the others. People from the last film return yet not in a big role and Amy, Gamma, Tails, Gabriel, Chaos, and Sonic having important parts like others. Metal Sonic as well including his story mixed with a bit of Gamma’s and Amy’s.

“Just saying I’ve been wanting to do the Adventure games cause I like them a lot, a lot of other people do to. Including their important to the Sonic universe. Along with I wanted to do Adventure 1 first cause it makes sense because I want to go into Adventure 2 a lot easier, no rushing, yet just it makes it much better.

Yet I had a problem with how are we gonna go with it. I like the story, such as Gamma’s, including Chaos who’s perfect after Eggman and Metal Sonic. Including expanding more on Sonic’s universe of their being other beings.

Including we would have to change some stuff yet to make sense to help it as a movie. Yet I felt their wasn’t something that might drag people into it. That it would feel connected that much into the last one. Then I thought of this. Including I was inspired by films like Man Of Steel, and Batman V Superman which helped inspired me.

The idea how would people react to Sonic if he was real. Mainly him. Because the games don’t really do that. Despite he’s saved the world a lot of times. Yet when are people gonna question mainly the officials such as world leaders. Including this kind of relates to the case with Chaos and I’m gonna spoil some Sonic Adventure here. It kind of relates to Chaos how he reacts to the world and how bad it went. Including he was angry in that moment. Also it was a personal reason.

But back to Sonic, the idea of people and these aren’t just regular people. These are people who have to make bog decisions for us. These aren’t people he can’t hurt, or just outrun from. The people he has to deal with even some of the public will make him question what is he doing in his life.

Despite he’s so full of confidence, and so sure of himself, going against injustice when he see’s it. He can’t go against the anyone he’s gonna try to protect. Or mainly people he will live with. I know that Sonic is always running and he has no home. Yet it’s a world issue.

Including the idea that some people would look at him at him as some sort of God with power beyond ours. It makes him uncomfortable, and he just wants to be treated like us, he just wants to help people, he wants to do the right thing. So these people putting him down, and Eggman is honestly enjoying this too, maybe also Metal Sonic, and Chaos moving about. He starts to question are these people right. Should I keep trying or should I just listen. Even when theirs danger.

Also theirs a scene during the movie where it’s kind of a joke Sonic goes to court. Yet Sonic goes there to talk with these people of how they feel about what he’s doing and what he represents. Including they kind of break him. Yet they don’t really yet he is just mad at the fact why can’t they just let him do what he wants. Including he even questions should I even do this anymore.

Theirs also Chaos who’s angry at the world. Along with Tikal wanting to make sure it doesn’t happen again. I kind of want to make the story like Gamma’s story connected to the main story which is why Metal Sonic is still around.

Including in the end despite the questioning. That we might need Sonic. Yet it isn’t just that, we need to realize of what we’re doing, and maybe more pacifist, maybe less violent. Sonic The Ultimate Lifeform.

Info: Three months after the events with Chaos who is now at peace with Tikal in the Master Emerald. Now things are changing since Dr. Robotnik had raided Prison Island for a secret hid away from the public.

Now all of a sudden, Sonic being captured and on the run by GUN. Yet even the public knows that Sonic hasn’t done anything wrong. Including when see why are GUN capturing Sonic and putting the blame on him when black hedgehog named Shadow is now unleashed. With the news and GUN saying it’s Sonic but the public knows better.

As time goes on. Things are revealed such as the Space Colony Ark, secrets hid for 50 years, and who are really the good guys. Along with a jewel thief Rouge helping out Robotnik, Metal Sonic, and Shadow.

Including who is Shadow and as his true intentions are revealed makes people wonder. How far would you go for your family. Including in a adventure that will make you question things. The emotion of family and how it affects you, that wishes are eternal. Along with giving others like you and more a chance to be happy, that people can still good, forgiveness, love, and what it takes on the responsibility of what it really means to be the Ultimate Lifeform.

“Now Sonic Adventure 2 is a game I know it has problems which with a movie which can fix upon. But the story itself which I felt could of been worked better but I understand what it’s trying to tell. I wanted to tell the story much more clearer.

I really like Shadow as a character. The way his story is in Sonic Adventure 2, and how I think Sonic Adventure 2 is more of a Shadow game then his own game. It’s a bit more mature too. Also despite people saying it’s dark yet…the way it is and how Shadow is developed it could be better which is why we’re taking some stuff from Sonic X since Sega is allowing us to do that.

The story of Sonic Adventure 2 I’ve said is basically the birth, fall, redemption, and death of Shadow. It’s a story that honestly has made me cry just thinking about it and how his character is. This film we really wanna go deep into that. Enough with the jokes of the whole edgy thing. Theirs reasons why people love this character. Including this it shows who he is and why he is.

Including I remember I felt like crying yet I think I almost did cry spoilers for Sonic Adventure 2 seeing the sight of Shadow on the Earth. Even the scene which we are gonna make better and make more sense which is inspired by the Sonic X adaptation scene where he realizes of what he’s become, and he’s pushing away what his sister Maria really wants when he’s so angry. He’s like a child acting like an adult, has PTSD and just can’t let go then he realizes he needs to do what he promised her and what he thinks is the right thing. Including with some of the story we put with this was some theories of mine like GUN knew everything and try to keep it hidden but they can’t, and Shadow was the one who set up some of this stuff for Gerald. Along with seeing he’s become the one thing he hated.

In a way the film is like a tribute to Shadow. I or we basically wanna make people cry about a black hedgehog like I cry over it. We wanna show why people like this game and it’s a film along with the score show why this story matters like the others”

The film is slated to be rated PG-13 with a release date on June 23rd of 2021 of Wednesday celebrating the 30st anniversary of the Sonic franchise and the 20th anniversary of Sonic Adventure 2, which is Shadow’s first appearance in the franchise.

Including the score again scored by the same Junkie XL and possibly Hans Zimmer.

With the talks of the SCU Sonic Cinematic Universe. The ideas was brought when GeekGem thought of it and more of it was thought about it when talking to a friend he was hanging out one time.

Mainly the film ideas are of.

A Team Chaotix Mystery Comedy, Shadow The Hedgehog but not with the Black Arms, Knuckles Chaotix, and a Tails spin off. Also possibly Sonic Riders if possible and more it depends.

“The idea of it is honestly fun. Also we not afraid or I’m not afraid to admit were gonna do the whole post credits scene and end credits scene. Because hey it’s not just Marvel’s thing, and it honestly helps. Including it’s a treat to any fans or anyone who wants more like the easter eggs we put in the films.

Yet it’s not gonna be like Marvel’s game plan with what they are doing or even the DCEU films, the Monsterverse films, and others. Their mainly gonna be like spin offs focusing on other stories. Yet characters from the main series like Sonic could appear yet their not the main focus. Including I think the Team Chaotix one with Knuckles Chaotix has quite some potential. With the first one the Team Chaotix one mostly involving like forgotten characters Sega and Sonic Team don’t use in their games much. It’s mainly a fun idea, and makes it’s own thing which is the point of some of these films.

While I work on the main films the spin offs are mainly their own things. It depends on what material we are using.

Including talks about a fourth film mixing the story of Sonic Lost World, Sonic Rush, and introducing Silver the hedgehog who first appeared in Sonic 06 which the team does not want to go with yet could reinvent the story if they want to. Meaning the story of the game won’t happen. The other part is Shadow returning.

While GeekGem realizes this is too much. He thinks it insane enough and just enough so much. People want Blaze, Silver, and even Marine, and he too along with the Deadly Six. Also possibly a Colors adaptation, and Sonic Forces adaptation. Yet we have to wait and see with Sonic Forces.
