Silly Game Time: Are you fan of the fantasy genre? If so, what's a fantasy story (movie, show, book, game, etc.) you really like, and why?
I am! I like urban fantasy, like Rivers of London (gotta continue reading that series someday), as well as just pure fantasy like Kingkiller Chronicle. I used to really like the original Sonea trilogy, and Kingmaker - Kingbreaker. Lord of the Rings, obviously. Also a bit of a Zelda nerd, and I've read almost oll of the Witcher books. Also stuff like Demon Slayer. I haven't been reading too much lately... gotta amend that.
I've been playing The dark Eye for years now, and recentl, had my first proper DnD session.
I don't actually know why I'm drawn to it. Maybe it's escapism? Maybe I just like whimsy. I like a good story with realistic, authentic, coherent characters and good writing. It needs to be logical and grounded in reality with consistent rules. Even if it's a soft magic system, I don't like it if the rules just get bent out of shape whenever convenient. Magic ex machina isn't fun for me.

During [the spring and summer of 1141], a number of contemporary narrative sources agreed that Matilda’s sudden and unexpected success went straight to her head. Matilda’s most renowned modern biographer has suggested that “conduct acceptable in a powerful king . . . was not acceptable in a ‘Lady of the English’. This line of reasoning can be taken quite a bit further. It is clear that contemporaries expected Matilda to emulate the behavior of those women who had previously held the rank of regina, and act like a queen consort while performing the office of king. Most queens consort, however, did not have to consolidate recognition of their position as Matilda was constrained to do. Nearly all the chroniclers who had marveled at her assumption of power turned on her immediately. Not surprisingly, the Gesta Stephani took the greatest exception:
She at once put on an extremely arrogant demeanor instead of the modest gait and bearing proper to the gentle sex, began to walk and speak and do all things more stiffly and more haughtily than she had been wont.
But other more sympathetic chroniclers also joined this chorus of disapproval: Henry of Huntington described her as “elated with insufferable pride” while the Worcester chronicler noted her “hard heart” as she strove to consolidate her position. Had she been a man, Matilda’s decidedly authoritarian style might have passed for a regal show of strength. Indeed, Matilda probably felt that if she was to hold on to her newly acquired status, she needed to behave like a king. Thus, Matilda’s forward movement from recognition of her status to the execution of her office was fraught with gendered difficulties concerning how a woman ought to conduct herself.
...As she anticipated her crowning, Matilda strove to consolidate her dynastic claims and establish her authority. It seems reasonable to suppose that Matilda looked to her father and her first husband for examples of successful kingship as she did for representational purposes. Both Emperor Henry V and King Henry I were suspicious, uncompromising, relentless, and ruthless in the pursuit of their aims. Probably both would have advised Matilda to follow their example. This was exactly what St. Bernard told Queen Melisende of Jerusalem following the death of her husband: “show the man in the woman; order all things . . . so that those who see you will judge your works to be those of a king rather than a queen.” Much of Matilda’s behavior during the spring and summer of 1141 can be explained as the emulation of male gendered kingship. But kings had the built-in advantage of female consorts to soften the more hardboiled aspects of their rule; Matilda had played that very role herself for her first husband. Nevertheless, in 1141, Matilda eschewed the feminine aspects of queenship completely, in effect negating what could have been useful symbolism to bolster the construction of her authority. But for Matilda to be perceived as a soft, forgiving, and gentle woman at the one moment she needed to consolidate her position at the top of a male dominant political society would not have been practical.
But by constructing herself as a female feudal lord, and emulating male gendered kingship, Matilda annoyed contemporary observers. The chroniclers’ hostility may have been due to the fact that Matilda was claiming kingly sovereignty for herself alone, and not in association with either her husband or her eldest son. The Gesta Stephani described Matilda as not only arrogant, but also spurning the advice of her chief advisors, the earl of Gloucester, her uncle King David of Scotland, and the “kingmaker” himself, the Bishop of Winchester. The Gesta implied that if Matilda had behaved as a deferential woman, and heeded the counsel of her male advisors, she could have devised a means to permanently depose Stephen, and be crowned and anointed in his place. The Gesta placed Matilda’s ultimate failure at her own door, blaming it on her arrogant reliance on her inferior, womanly intellect and emotions.
Matilda’s hard-line stance, acceptable in a male king, bothered the authors of the Worcester chronicle and the Gesta, suggesting that contemporaries were confused by what they wanted the “Lady of the English” to do, indicating that, as a woman and a domina, she should behave gently like a queen rather than forcefully like a king. Combined, all the chroniclers, with the exception of Malmesbury, suggested that Matilda should have used the intercessory powers of queenship to set Stephen free, moderated the harsher aspects of her father’s rule, and excused the Londoners from financial support. Although a more diplomatic approach might have helped, freeing Stephen at that moment in time would have realistically served no practical purpose in establishing Matilda’s authority. And, in denying Eustace his inheritance, Matilda was only imitating the efforts of her father, Henry I, who also dealt harshly with challengers to his throne. Henry I kept his elder brother Robert Curthose in prison until he died, and prevented his nephew, William Clito, Curthose’s heir, from gaining any aspect of the Anglo-Norman inheritance. Matilda wished to convince her contemporaries that she was quite capable of being a king, but their reactions betrayed hostility toward her as a woman presuming to establish kingly authority.
-Charles Beem, "Empress Matilda and Female Lordship", The Lioness Roared: The Problems of Female Rule in English History"
#i got an ask about this topic a few hours ago so here you go!#historicwomendaily#empress matilda#the anarchy#12th century#english history#queenship tag#my post#queue#I really dislike the way most general histories talk about Matilda and frame her actions#Even when they begin on a sympathetic note they still emphasize how she had a 'difficult personality' and sabotaged herself#...did she? because her father and her son behaved exactly the same and it worked out for them#'She should've just been more compliant and LISTENED to people' - and then she would have been viewed as weak and pliant.#There is very little compassion for her extremely complicated situation and how gendered expectations & misogyny were almost entirely#responsible for how contemporaries perceived and judged her#This pattern is also evident with historians' frustrating tendency to compare Matilda (a REGNANT) to Stephen's queen Mathilde (A CONSORT)#even though their roles and expectations were entirely different#Matilda is often compared to other English consorts (Isabella of France; Eleanor of Aquitaine; Margaret of Anjou) as well#which makes even less sense and is 10x frustrating#Matilda - as female king in her own right with a contested claim - was in a very unique and anomalous situation#and any attempt to compare her to consorts ends up downplaying and misunderstanding her situation#I've noticed a similar pattern with Jeanne de Penthievre (female claimant of Brittany) where her role and authority is often compared#to her rival claimant's consort Joanna of Flanders#Which – once again – is entirely illogical as both women had entirely different roles and expectations and authority

Owlcatober - Day 14 - Scratch
A quick one in Kingmaker for @owlcatober, direct sequel to Day Two.
[Ao3 Link]
====
The worst part about knowing a story you couldn’t tell was, well… not being able to tell!
Yes, Linzi understood why she was asked to keep it quiet. It would be a horrible ending to her story if the chronicler’s loose lips got the heroine lynched for what ran through her blood. But oh, how reading the whole story would capture the attention of her readers! Nothing created a desire to know more like two seemingly contradictory positions that were both true.
For a bard like Linzi, telling a story was like an itch to be scratched. A good one that felt warm and fuzzy after it was done, rather than unpleasant like a rash. Having to sit on a story and not tell it, possibly never telling it? That was more like an unpleasant rash, and the best Linzi could do to get some warm feelings over the itch was to whisper it with those who also knew already. Sadly, most of them who she could share it with were part of the story.
Leaning back, she stretched her arms only to have her right one land on a furred body. Wincing, Linzi looked at the large black furred wolf she had just accidently put her hand on, then paused. Did werewolves in their all-wolf form enjoy a good scratch like dogs did?
She probably should ask first, but it would probably look strange to be asking one for permission to scratch. Well, she had a cover to maintain! What kind of Cavalier of the Paw did not give their good girl scratches? Brynn the Cavalier had a responsibility! One that Linzi was probably going to regret after the whole Kingdom of the Cleansed thing was resolved and they were safely back in Tuskdale.
Slowly, she started scratching at the side. The rustling of the maille she wore as part of her disguise sounded like a cabinet full of pans falling over, but that was nothing unusual when trying to be quiet. The wolf’s tail started to flip side to side. Linzi smirked - she had her answer. Werewolves loved belly scratches.
Maybe she should find someone writing an encyclopedia and tell them. For posterity, of course.

Hi your memes are very funny, but do mind if I ask what books you would recommend that have similar vibes to actor or fantasy romance , thank you for your time
Hey! I appreciate you asking and for your kind words on my meme craftsmanship lol.
If you've finished ACOTAR and are looking to stay in the SJM universe I would recommend reading Throne of Glass and the Crescent City series, I know that's the generic answer but I think that reading it helped me build the world in ACOTAR even more than it already was. What I wall say is that TOG was harder for me to get into, don't get me wrong, I loved it, but I feel like ACOTAR was a quick and easy read for me and TOG required me to do a little more mapping of characters, plot points and actually looking at the front map which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea. It also just feels a little more young adult to me, which I know is an unpopular opinion, but the characters are younger and SJM was younger when she wrote it.
Outside of the SJM universe I quite enjoyed thematically:
"Serpent & Dove" by Shelby Mahurin - it's about a witch and witch hunter who are married to one another with a good mix of romance and conflict with insane amounts of world building.
"The Cruel Prince" by Holly Black - If you want to stay in the world of the fae, it's the first book in The Folk of the Air series about a girl living in the world of faeries (another really popular one)
"An Enchantment of Ravens" by Margaret Rogerson - About a portrait artist and the autumn prince of the fae - it's gorgeously written
"Wintersong" by S. Jae-Jones - A young girl travels into the legend of the Goblin King to save her sister (a darker read)
For me, ACOTAR was such a joy to read because it was funny, and the conversations felt real! For more of that with the romance elements I would recommend:
"Bring Me Their Hearts" by Sara Wolf - Featuring a really witty and sarcastic protagonist who must bring the heart of a prince to her witch master
"A Promise of Fire" by Amanda Bouchet - it's part of the Kingmaker Chronicles with Greek myth as inspiration
If you're in the doldrums of the post ACOTAR life I hear you. ACOTAR was my entire world for the three months I was in Prythian. Hopefully this gives you a jumping off point for more good reads... but let me know if you find anything else you loved!!!

What has been nominated so far
Note, just because something has been nominated, and so is listed here, does not mean it will be included, I will include the absolute most I can but if I can't find it on TARDIS wiki its not getting in because i can't verify its a piece of who media
Also note, there might be some mistakes on here, I'm copying the nominations across directly, there might be some stories that are listed twice without me realising, because of alternate titles, or I just didn't spot it, or stuff that was spelt wrong when it was nominated, feel free to tell me
I've done my best to spot when nominations of a series were intended to enter the individual parts rather than the series as a unit, if I've got this wrong let me know and I will fix it. (if a story is on one line its currently being considered as a unit)
Final note, a couple of things got nominated under multiple mediums, usually full length TV story and minisode, so if you can't find your nomination, maybe check one of the other mediums
You can make further nominations here, there are basically no limits so long as its set in the Whoniverse (or its about Doctor Who, eg An Adventure in Space and Time or The 5 (ish) Doctors Reboot)
the list is under the cut (I will endeavour to keep it up to date)

››Prince Aegor, the youngest son of the late Queen Visenya had been born with hair so golden it could put any Lannister to shame, in his youth he had been mocked as the ‘Dragon of Lannister’ or praised as ‘the Golden Hearted Knight’, by the countless men he defeated in melees and jousting, however the realm and the history books alike would forever remember him as the ‘Prince Executioner’, a vengeful kingslayer and ursuper, although in the aftermath of the siege of Kingslanding in 201 AC, in which King Baelor the Bright was slain by his own great uncle, smallfolk and lords alike gathered in the many inns and taverns to sing their praise to ‘the Last Prince’, and the city roared with songs of ‘Lord Kingmaker, the Warden of the Realm’.‹‹ - A Chronicle of Dragonfire by Maester Aeryn

Pathfinder Kingmaker, session 1
A call for adventurers and heroes came from Lady Jamandi, promising fame and fortune to those brave enough to take a venture into the Stolen Lands.
Noble siblings of House Surtova, Irena and Ozzy, arrived in Restov via carriage ride, while the weasel rogue Ella is a local who snuck in to sniff out if this was going to be a good deal. Ella was spotted by a halfling writer named Linzi, who showed great interest in the possibility of chronicling the adventures of an awakened weasel hero.
Lady Jamandi arrived, and announced her intention to charter lands to any adventurers brave and skilled enough to tame the Stolen Lands. Restov would acknowledge the validity of any kingdom founded by the adventurers, and would provide vital trade and funding to any to successfully carry out the terms of the charter.
The gathered mercenaries, nobles, adventurers, and heroes then partook in a grand feast in their honor, and mingled amongst potential allies and competitors.
Ozzy approached an ostentatiously dressed gnome named Tartuccio, speaking to him noble-to-noble. Tartuccio expressed that he was the one most worthy to found a kingdom in the Stolen Lands, and that he would be the first to successfully build up such a kingdom.
Irena took an interest in an elven woman, who she noticed was wearing a well hidden religious symbol to Urgathoa, the goddess of the undead. Irena struck up conversation, learning that her name was Jaethel, and that she was not on the best terms with the elven homeland, Kyonin. Irena showed an openness and respect for Jaethel and her beliefs, which the elven woman seemed to appreciate—although she did warn Irena not to speak freely about any suspicions she had about Jaethel’s status as living or undead.
Ozzy then took some time to mingle with fellow noble Maegar Varn, who expressed that he was looking to be remembered by history in venturing into the Stolen Lands to build a kingdom. Varn suggested that if both he and Ozzy succeeded in the creation of kingdoms, that Ozzy would be a welcome neighbor and perhaps they could be of assistance to each other.
Ella, now that she’d been noticed and couldn’t continue sneaking about, decided to try talking to a boisterous woman with an oversized sword—one Amiri. Amiri seemed amused by the tiny mustelid with even tinier daggers, but she did seem to respect Ella’s ability to drink her weight in alcohol. Ella’s patron Cayden Cailean was good in Amiri’s books, since drinking and fighting are two of her favorite things.
Ozzy changed his approach, and went to talk to a dour looking dwarf with Groetus’ religious symbol proudly displayed. He spoke dwarven, seemed to give a good first impression. The nihilist, Harrim, expressed an interest in finding ancient dwarven ruins in the Stolen Lands, which he’d heard tales of. He didn’t know their exact location, but he seemed quite comfortable with the possibility of failure. After all, all things eventually end, one way or another.
Irena, having seen Ozzy pass up the opportunity to speak to a beautiful and proper looking warrior woman, stepped in to introduce herself instead. The warrior’s name was Valerie. She seemed quite taken with Irena and her focus on bringing a structured and lawful society to the chaotic Stolen Lands, although she seemed somewhat uncomfortable when the subject of religion came up.
Ella hung back for a bit, people watching. She made note that Tartuccio appeared to be a magic user or some kind, and that he was quite susceptible to fawning and flattery. She decided she had little interest in approaching him, and instead tried her hand at talking to Harrim. Her perky presence didn’t seem to lighten the dour dwarf’s mood any, and he ended up stonewalling her.
Ozzy decided to excuse himself from talking, and talked his way into the band playing for the event, joining them with his lyre. He was hoping to leave an impression on their host and Maegar Varn, in particular. At the end of his performance, however, he decided to try to butter up Tartuccio a bit, dedicating the song to the princely looking gnome. Unfortunately, his hand slipped and made a rather jarring sound there at the end, botching an otherwise lovely song.
Irena collected her brother before he could embarrass them further, and they returned to their table as the feast was coming to a close. There, they finally took notice of Ella. Ozzy was fascinated by—but not very tactful towards—the little talking weasel. Irena made a far more diplomatic first impression, and Ella proposed a partnership. Neither noble looked like they’d seen a single fight in their life. Ozzy took exception to this, but when he tried to fight the weasel to prove his skills, she dodged his rapier and leapt up onto his arm. He shook her off before she could bite him, but Ozzy admitted to being impressed and agreed that a partnership would be fruitful.
Ella’s only condition was that Irena be their leader, as she seemed like the smart one. Irena agreed that she had intended to be the leader, and Ozzy *also* agreed, as he knew where he and his sister’s strengths lie, and he wanted to leave the tedious work to her.
It was around this time that Lady Jamanti made a toast to the heroes in the room, and informed them that she would be discussing the exact details of the charters she would be bestowing on the different adventuring parties in the morning. Until then, they were welcome to sleep in the guest chambers.
Ella convinced Ozzy and Irena to let her sleep in their roomat the price of a gold on Irena’s insistence. They settled in, and after hashing out their dynamic a bit more, they settled in for the night.
If they dreamed, they didn’t remember the details. They didn’t sleep peacefully, however, as in the middle of the night a scream rang out in the otherwise silent halls.
And that is where we leave off until next time.

I have made some edits and new additions to the timeline thanks to the suggestions by people in the notes. I’d like to thank @dihalectics, @chemicallywrit, @224bbaker, @roguemaker, @measureyourlifeincake  @geminicollisionworks, @monstrousagonies, @sinkholepodcast, and once again @kingmakerpod for inspiring the idea.
Feel free to let me know others to add on to the timeline, I’m really enjoying making this and learning about other podcasts!
