An episode for the old school romance readers in the audience, we're talking about kidnapping this week! A trope that either absolutely works for readers (aka us) or absolutely doesn't, we talk about why that is, how the original romances of the 80s and 90s installed these buttons and how we still see the bones of old school kidnapping in delicious romances of today. That, and Jen reminds Sarah of books she wrote one time.

Our First MaDG Book!
The first MaDG book is officially here! I recently finished A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet and while it definitely was not my favorite book (I gave it three stars), I am still intrigued by the world and what the author has in store for the characters in the rest of the series. While I probably won’t read the rest of the series in the immediate future, I think that I will eventually come back to the world to read the other books.
Overall, I found that I wasn’t super invested in the plot or the characters and struggled a little to find the time to read (most of the motivation definitely came from the fact that I needed to finish it in order to start my next book which I am so excited for). I didn’t really love Cat has an FMC and honestly could not get behind Griffin as a love interest because of the fact that he quite literally kidnapped her and kept kissing her without her consent. There was also way too much spanking in this book in my personal opinion, but that's a whole separate conversation.
As much as I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions between Cat and the rest of Beta Team (minus Griffin, but we’ve already talked about him), I absolutely adored Cat and Griffin’s family. She fully got herself aggressively adopted and the sleepover with her and Griffin’s little sisters was amazingly perfect. All of the quotes/scenes that I underlined/tabbed were interactions between them.
Now. While this book was generally a fairly mediocre fantasy romance, the one thing that drove me absolutely insane was the inconsistent use of Greek mythology for world building. Poseidon and Zeus seem quite normal (so far). They’re omnipotent-esc figures who give people powers and are removed from society. Adonis and Prometheus are both brought up in ways that are consistent with their mythological counterparts. But Hades? Hades is just hanging around a circus with Cerberus. Just casually? His brothers are off being gods and Hades is chilling at a random circus with his dog and his girlfriend (or whatever you want to call Selena). It felt very strange to me. And then there’s Scylla. Scylla, Scylla, Scylla. In Greek myths, Scylla (and Charybdis) are giant sea monsters who guard a water channel and kill people. In this book, Scylla (please note that Charybdis just doesn’t exist??) is a water dragon, so while I guess I can see where it came from, it messed with my brain and not in a good way.
Final thoughts - it was a three star read for me. Very much so just your average fantasy romance. Will I be immediately getting the rest of the series to binge read? No. Will I read the rest of the series at some future point in my life? Probably. We’ll see!

A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet

~5/5 Stars⭐️
This.was.so.fudging.good. WHAT THE HECK???? How am I supposed to move on with my life after this😭 But seriously, this book was absolutely amazing. I stumbled across this book after finishing Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros(still not over that one either tbh), which left me with the biggest book hangover of my life bro. I was looking for anything even remotely similar, dragons, magic, whatever. And let me tell you, A Promise of Fire delivered baby!! The story is so well written and the characters and world building are all solid as a 🪨. Even the side characters were amazing, and that’s a rare feeling for me! Cat is the kingmaker, which is basically this all powerful being with the ability to make or break anyone who sits on the throne. Power like that comes with a cost, and Cat has spent the majority of her life paying the price for it. That is until she joins a traveling circus(I promise it’s not as out of place as it sounds). There she runs into Griffin, the INSANELY hot, caring, and ruthless alpha sinta who has just dethroned the current royals and put his sister in charge instead. There’s nothing, and I mean nothing y’all, I wouldn’t do for Griffin. A kill and ask questions later man, who’s also the biggest softie in the realm? SIGN ME UP COACH. It should also be noted that the spice and angst in this book gave Fourth Wing and ACOTAR a run for its fudging money🥵 This was the slow burn of my dreamsss😩 Honestly, my only complaint about this book was that TRASH ENDING. Like, no really. What was that???? I genuinely thought I skipped a chapter and went straight to the end. But nope, just the world’s worst cliffy and a somewhat happy ending. I have so many questions still!!! I swear I could go on for days🙄 ANYWAYS.
As always,
Happy Reading❤️
