Friday, October 25: Dio, "Another Lie"
R.I.P. Ronald James "Dio" Padavona (1942-2010), Jimmy Bain (1947-2016)
Sacred Heart was almost immediately derided by everyone (including Vivian Campbell) as a transparent attempt to broaden Dio’s commercial prospects, and while it charted and sold well enough not to raise immediate concerns, in hindsight it was the beginning of the end for Dio on many levels.  Of course, the notion of Ronnie James Dio making hair metal was laughable on its face, and “Another Lie” was an especially hilarious “evil woman” tale that, even with a more rockin’ riff and Vinny Appice going for more of a groove, sounded less swaggering and more like a cranky elf shaking his cane at a bored stripper.  There was something almost charming about Dio, both the man and band, trying to strut around the Sunset Strip like they were Ratt or something, and Campbell did try to spice things up a bit with a nice solo over Ronnie’s typical boxy production.  It was actually the combination of the production, Appice and Campbell that helped “Another Lie” do a nice enough job keeping the Dio train running, because all of that made it feel like something that could be performed on stage while Denzil the dragon hovered behind the drums.

No specific entry for today. Instead I want to show you something very unusual.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pretty neat covers here, aren't they? Only one issue: what the hell does Bugs Bunny have to do with Faith Hill? I don't recall seeing her in either Space Jam or Looney Tunes: Back in Action.
This was actually a generic design cover Warner Bros. Records used for select promo CD singles in the '90s. I presume they used these in place of photos of the artist if they were already used in other singles. These designs kinda remind me of the generic label sleeves found on singles during the vinyl era.
I don't know who designed these generic covers but I assume it's someone who worked at the WB Animation studio.
Other artists known to have had this cover in promo singles include Little Texas, Mark O'Connor and Travis Tritt.

Friday, June 14: Van Halen, "On Fire"
R.I.P. Edward Van Halen (1955-2020)
Van Halen’s first record was one of the select few in recorded history that functioned as a ready-made greatest hits album: after a solid four years of backyard gigs and ruling the Sunset Strip, Van Halen was the sound of four locked-in dudes who knew exactly what they were aiming for and were fully formed as an entity.  There was not a single wasted moment, and Ted Templeman’s production was full-on lightning in a bottle magic- these songs didn’t so much play as burst out of speakers, so much so that even a presumable throwaway like “On Fire” roared with the lifeforce of 3,000 parties.  David Lee Roth caterwauled more than sang, but his antics were in full lockstep with Eddie Van Halen’s monumental riffing, shredding and squealing- over 45 years later, there is still something shocking about all of this.  And while Alex Van Halen would get more adventurous as a drummer soon enough, he was in perfect sync with his brother and Michael Anthony’s steady bass.  There was way too much life in here to be contained, which likely explained why “On Fire” was less a song and more of an explosion.

ZZ Top frontman Billy F. Gibbons had this chopped 1933 Ford built in the early 1980s -- the car would later be known as the Eliminator.
The ZZ Top Eliminator hot rod became a legend by appearing in several rock music videos. Rock 'n' roll and hot rodding have a lot in common. Both inject old forms (say, blues music or antique Fords) with horsepower and flamboyance. It's no surprise, then, that many rock stars are also hot rod enthusiasts. ZZ Top frontman Billy F. Gibbons is probably the best-known roddin' rocker.
Heavily influenced by Pete Chapouris' the California Kid, Billy had Don Thelan's Buffalo Motor Cars shop build him a chopped 1933 Ford in the early '80s that would soon be known as the Eliminator coupe. Underneath was a straightforward Pete and Jake's chassis with a dropped tube axle and four-bar suspension up front and a Ford nine-inch out back.
Thelan chopped the steel three-window body three inches, Steve Davis made the three-piece hood with unique "scooped" side panels, and Kenny Youngblood designed the "ZZ" graphics. Additional body details included the filled rear splash pan with recessed license plate, '39 Ford teardrop taillights, and lowered '34 Ford headlights.
Finicky hi-po motors have never been Billy's scene, so the emphasis was on reliability. Power was provided by a simple but capable 350-cid Chevy V-8 with a Camaro Z-28 hydraulic cam, a polished intake manifold with a single four-barrel carb, and a Turbo 350 transmission. As a finishing touch, Eric Vaughn milled the ZZ Top logo into the valve covers.
A painting of the coupe was featured on the cover of ZZ Top's multiplatinum 1983 album Eliminator, and the real car was immortalized on the small screen in four music videos that were run in heavy rotation on MTV.
Each video featured a Cinderella-story vignette in which an earnest but unfairly downtrodden teen is swept away and "saved" by the arrival of beautiful girls in the Eliminator. The members of ZZ Top granted the protagonist a magical set of keys with a stylized ZZ key chain, and the hot rod appeared as a magical fantasy object.
Gibbons' Eliminator gave rodding immeasurable exposure and spurred the interest of an MTV generation of teenagers who hadn't before seen a real hot rod in motion.
Billy had always been a rodder, but the Eliminator was his first car to gain international fame. Demand for public appearances was so high that Billy had California Street Rods construct an Eliminator clone to go on tour. He still owns both cars today, along with several other high-profile rods and customs. Billy has done almost as much for rodding as he has for rock 'n' roll.
