My Drifter's reimagining of Mathila
Description from the art:
(Right) Eurie's Notes:
> her POWERS hurt the most
> oh Void, she looks like my best friend
(Leftmost)
> better Kaithe rider than BOMBASTINE
--------------------------------
NAV: Lodun || || Bombastine || MATHILA || Luscinia || Sythel || Dominus Thrax
Bonus lore/notes below!
Mathila's maskless version is based on Eurie's best friend Amethyst alias "Amy" (my other Drifter OC I have 3 Drifter OCs god help me)
Eurie dodged the heck out of Mathila before Duviri Paradox quest because she reminded her of Amy and that hits too close to home.
She had dormant Void Angel related powers (she can wield Tau/Void like in-game). Her main power is Viral damage though.
Mathila has a sickle and, unlike the other Courtiers who has weapons/items, she rarely use it. Only summons it on her right hand when she is too excited... if it's not her Spiral that is.
In her Orowyrm form, she just likes to go to the people she cares about (like... boop them with her snout) but she can't do that because (1) Thrax won't let her under his control and (2) when someone see you as a 50-foot whatever biomechanical serpent, people will try their damnest to run away from you.

thought since he both formed duviri and duviri molded him that id try to alter his diviris courtiers to have aspects of my drifter bleed into them and also some symbolic void angel aspects on them.
void angel parts on them and what they mean to the courtiers specifically just so i can keep track:
bombastine/envy/lonlieness: hole in chest (feels a longing that will never be fufilled)
lodun/ anger/defensive rage: bladed arms (makes himself sharp but cannot get close to others without causing harm)
Mathila/joy/denial: wings/back (corruption where she cannot see so she can ignore it as if everything is fine)
Luscinia/sorrow/suicidal depression: her face is gone under the mask, (the only one that doesnt have wills facial features under the mask only because her sense of self was taken from her)
Sythel/fear/anxiety: bladed legs (shakey and hard to balence on but running is her only option, the only thing she knows)
#warframe#tennocreate#lodun#mathila#luscinia#sythel#bombastine#duviri#duviri courtiers#digital art#got fun lil quirks for them and how they act slightly different#this is just more violent inside out#their hair is faded to white to match my drifters at the ends and they share facial features under the mask#playing on the whole 'i AM duviri' thing#it is him and he is them

drawing more volt as a treat cause this update broke me but its giving me thoughts
like Thrax coming to the dormizone and seeing operator and thinking they got their friend back
or Albrecht reading more bedtime stories to drifter and Thrax than he ever did to his own daughter
or even the drifter being the one to teach him about love and care and that's what made him realize what needed to be done
#warframe#warframe volt#warframe kalymos#warframe spoilers#alternatively in less serious thoughts the drifter teasing him about how he has a crush on loid#also depending on how you read into it mathila could be the last courtier around because thats the drifters strongest emotion after 1999

it's so interesting that the crack in mathila's mind is what let wally latch onto the Joy spiral, and yet that crack - her disavowal of all things sad and negative - seems to hold her sense of self inexorably apart from wally, who's all about negativity being inescapable.
#it's SO funny that wally goes 'you've got problems? kys that'll fix it'#dawg you're jumping the gun a bit much there#warframe#warframe isleweaver#warframe spoilers#mathila warframe

Duviri's writing is interesting in that the courtiers, in a sense, feel like an act of capitulation to the storytelling and characterization limitations of games-as-a-service- the instrumental and perfunctory role that mission givers and bosses tend to have to hold in games like this, if only for reasons of development time and resource allocation. Five endearingly-colorful weirdos who're fun to have as the voice in your ear for a few minutes at a time on repetitive missions.... who are textually only semi-real people, metastasized imaginary friends who exist only to play out the just-so stories for which they were created again, and again, and again, all just sapient enough to express some level of resentment at the fact that they're incapable of character development, existing only to be the mission control and final boss whenever you feel like going on a roguelike jaunt.
I can mow Grineer and Corpus down like wheat without a ton of dissonance- the realities of live-service games aside, if you take the premise at face value those missions are presented as actually being in service of something. But the metatextual stage-play premise of Duviri kind of invites me to feel like my character is, within the narrative, being extraneously awful to someone by choosing to continue to engage at all with the play-acting. It's all very interesting.

Tales of Duviri is a storybook written by Euleria Entrati for the purpose of teaching children how to handle the manic flood of emotion that comes with Void exposure.
I pose a question: why does Euleria feel so strongly about this?
Her interactions with her own children are... let's call them wanting, and dialog implies that the negative aspects of their relationship--her denigrating, controlling nature, the distrust, etc--did not begin only after the Infestation brainrot set in.
We also know that she holds her father in extremely high esteem, but Albrecht did not think much of Tales of Duviri (see: him talking about his previous disdain for it in his own Duviri notes). Euleria put resources into writing Tales of Duviri instead of more traditional science, and Albrecht did not think much of it.
So why did Euleria write Tales of Duviri?
Let's rewind a step. Void exposure-induced mania, the whole thing Tales of Duviri is written to help manage.
How was that discovered and studied? It clearly was studied, enough to be a recognized condition and for the Orokin to build the iso vaults and for Euleria to write Tales of Duviri. But who would they have observed this mania in if Void research was an abandoned dead-end line of study?
Perhaps...the man obsessed with the Void who'd survived an unshielded Void dive?
Euleria had patient zero of Void mania sitting at her dinner table. Albrecht is the character who's undoubtedly had the most Void exposure.
Albrecht himself must have exhibited the Void mania and mood swings that Tales of Duviri exists to teach caution of.
And that's why Euleria wrote it; she had this gyroscope of a mood swing at home. She admired Albrecht too much to consciously deride his lack of control as irresponsible and so she channeled her energy into writing Tales of Duviri instead.
The emotion spirals of Duviri are loosely based off of what Euleria witnessed in the Entrati household and particularly Albrecht himself.
I don't believe that any courtier is a 1:1 translation of a member of the Entrati household, but more that their toxic interactions and dramatic heights reflected things that Euleria herself saw--or lived.
This reading of the Duviri characters and story--that they mean things to Euleria specifically--gives us a fun new lens to look at all of the chapters with.
For example, Mathila.
"Two children, and no memory of her husband. Poor Mathila."
Two children like Euleria herself, eh?
Mathila loved her husband. He also textually does not exist. He's not on the screen or in the text. He is a memory, and one that Mathila herself cannot even remember. There is no portrayal of their love.
Pivot to a writer's perspective. You need to write a loving relationship. You look to real life for inspiration, right? If you're a married woman needing to write a married woman in love, you naturally look to your own relationship.
And if you can't find anything to base that love off of? Well...move that character offscreen. Just tell about the loving relationship, don't show. Actually, do you even have anything to tell about? Well. Move the entire loving relationship offscreen, then. She's got amnesia. Nobody needs to talk about the love to sell it or make it feel real now. The narrator can simply mention it as a fact and it need not be challenged. Euleria doesn't have to imagine a loving family life between a husband and wife and their two children and question why that's hard for her. There. Problem fucking solved.
Another parallel that fairly started screaming at me once I started considering that the Duviri courtiers had meaning to Euleria specifically: Luscinia.
"I was created to be Sorrow, written into being, to serve as a lesson... can that change?"
Luscinia knows that she is a tool. As much as she dreams of being more, she knows very well that she is a tool--both a literal narrative element to teach a lesson and within the story itself Thrax's servant (his personal songbird).
Is there anyone in Euleria's life who might have some angst over their position as a tool? A servant who wants to escape the limited definitions of their role?
And so... here I am, back to my old role. The diligent servant. Albrecht would have smiled at that, I think.
Loid. It's Loid.
Luscinia: "This structure and I share much. Both of us once useful, both of us discarded, both of us now derelict. Both forgotten." Loid: "How might this relic make himself useful today?"
Both Luscinia and Loid are also capable of surprising amounts of ruthless violence. Luscinia has no hesitation telling you to kill the Dax or otherwise wreak vengeance on her jailers. Loid's Necramech lines feature him ranging from being excited for ensuing violence to coldly promising the Murmur regret.
The Duviri Tales were a subconscious form of therapy for Euleria herself as well, allowing her to write a story where emotional explosions were a problem that must be addressed rather than a social struggle to be suffered through at the whims of the more powerful.

a gay server for the gayest game of all time
hi! are you a warframe player thats lgbt+, interested in finding a chill and welcoming community, and enjoy fawning over robots? i have the server for you! LGBTFRAME is an established discord community with over 25+ members! We have an established clan (now with crossplay), and have a channel for trading, in-game help and questions, recruting, and more!
we try to foster a community that's supportive and inclusive, and we do this in a multitude of ways; consistent and vigilant moderation, the use of Pluralkit bot for those who need it, and a variety of channels to discuss real-world issues and problems (which is moderated EVEN more heavily), we try to make sure everyone who wants to feel welcome does feel that way!
A couple of things to keep in mind:
Our server is 18+ ONLY. Please, do not lie about this to get in the server; while we do maintain only a channel to discuss NSFW topics, the actual nature of the server is not NSFW. (Warframe is technically only for people 17 and up anyway, so please don't waste my time asking for an invite if ur not over 18.)
Goes without saying: nazis, terfs, zionists, and bigots of all backgrounds need not apply! You would probably not like the server much anyway; it's mostly gay commies lol
Please message me either with an ask or an actual message (which is preferable) if you're interested in joining after reading those qualifications. Don't hesitate to reach out with other questions!

Some Warframe 1999/Protoframe/Duviri Paradox screenshots below the spoiler cut.

Finally! A connection was possible and I pulled Eleanor through into Duviri with me. Even better, it was during one of Mathila's spirals!

She fought well in the Undercroft. I'm looking forward to sitting down with Eleanor once she's had time to process the trip and we can really sink our teeth into the discussion of Duviri and the Void.

One can not escape Duviri's spiral without facing the currently ruling Courtier. I know Eleanor was delighted to meet an Orowyrm in person. She has a personal frame of reference for that mural she's been planning now. Truly a joyful victory!

The relationships between the Duviri Courtiers and other major characters are really funny to me.
Bombastine despises Luscinia for being Thrax's favourite entertainer, despite being the one who organised the event that resulted in her rising above him. He's also secretly in love with her, and so is acting like a toddler because he doesn't know how to express his desires in a positive way. He also sucks at riding horses and is jealous of the biceps of a bunch of skeletons. My cringe fail son.
Mathila is a judgemental mother despite her overly positive outlook. Brimon implies he's having an affair with her. She took care of Teshin, and implies they're still friends. He never mentions her. A toxically positive girl boss.
Lodun has incredible anger issues stemming from self doubt, and is constantly plotting to overthrow Thrax, but fails every time. He's desperate for approval, seeing a single supporter as a win, and cares deeply about his great-grandmother and her shrine. The Wall of his house is cracked because he keeps punching it. Another cringefail child of mine.
Luscinia hates being the King's favourite, but doesn't know how to get out of it. She's prone to drastic, dramatic bouts of melancholy. She somehow knows secrets about Duviri that Thrax is implied to either be unaware of, or deliberately ignoring. She loves revenge. She once sang at an event where she was standing on a bunch of eels, that got eaten from underneath her. A girlboss who doesn't want to be.
Sythel is paranoid, but also knows far more about Duviri than apparently nearly anyone. She's terrified of Acrithis. She stays hidden in her house to avoid facing issues which, frankly, is a mood. She also somehow left her face behind in another part of Duviri. I love her, but I hope she gets some comfort. A couple of floofs and some Tasoma Extract tea.
Brimon is a snarky, self absorbed champion racer...who we never see ride a Kaithe. He claims to be better with a sword than anyone, despite never using one that we can see. He brags about being such a good lover, that he's the reason Mathila is happy. He can't believe you beat him, even on the easiest of Kaithe races. He somehow has a copy of the Tales of Duviri with him at all times. A bastard, but a fun one.
Oh and Acrithis, my favourite of the bunch. A librarian who has her own carriage. She wants to torture people who damage books. She implies Mathila is a slut. She calls out Lodun for being too ashamed to face his issues. She thinks Sythel is a nasty little rat lady. She's the only one who remembers the old islands. She calls Teshin an "old thingy-bob in a cave". She finds us fascinating and wants to study us. She sees through every single one of the Courtiers. The true Queen of Duviri, imo.
