Grima Wormtongue had a ward?

When it comes to writing about Rohan, I am quite excited for the opportunity to create more OC's. You've already heard about head healer Walda, Éomer King's yet to be named male secretary who is also his work wife, as well as Hafrith, the lady in waiting with a sweet personality and a tragic subplot. But more recently, in honor of @proletariatramen's years-long obsession with the Black Butler character Alois Trancy, I've come up with a Rohanese OC who will be a genderbent version of him. She will be another lady in waiting, and her name will be Ainsley, per the Rohanese naming convention which requires all names to have Old English roots.

Alright, so who is Ainsley?

Ainsley is a white-blonde wisp of a young woman with eyes like rainwater, and while she is beautiful, Lothíriel's first impression is that she looks like a mushroom that sprung up overnight after a rain. (As you already know, Lothíriel is not a very nice person when she is in distress).

Anyway, Ainsley's origins are relatively humble: she comes from a family of lesser nobles, and her home village was wiped out by raiding Dunlendings. She and her younger brother are the sole survivors, but afterwards, they are forced to wander, and eke out a living working odd jobs and trying to find their way to another part of the country where they believe they have distant relatives. In the course of their travels, Ainsley is forced to resort to sex work, and her brother dies from an illness.

Grima Wormtongue, Theoden King's crooked advisor, meets Ainsley in a house of ill repute where she finally ends up, despairing in finding her family. Grima sees something in her, and begins to sexually groom her, eventually taking her away and passing her off as his ward.

Using his influence at court, Grima secures a post for Ainsley as one of Lady Eowyn's ladies in waiting. Since Grima is trying to sink his claws into Éowyn as well, one of Ainsley's tasks is to spy on her mistress. But Ainsley ends up playing a dangerous game. She sabotages Grima's efforts by feeding him either false or useless information -- not because she particularly cares about Éowyn (more about this later), but because with all her trauma, she is on nobody's side but her own. Later, when Grima is discredited by Gandalf and the Three Hunters, Ainsley comes out about his abuse and manipulation of her, Éowyn vouches for her, and she is taken into the royal family's protection. After Éowyn leaves for Gondor, Ainsley becomes a lady in waiting to Lothíriel.

Personality-wise, Ainsley is about as erratic as Alois -- again, on account of her trauma. She is one of those traumatized people who was forced to watch their family die, emerged from the experience laughing maniacally, and never stopped laughing. As a result of her harsh years on the run, she trusts nothing and nobody, and hates most everyone she comes across, though she masks it all with a sweet and hypersexual flirtatious demeanor, peppered with a hint of playful crassness and casual abuse.

Oftentimes, she is seen dancing around like Ophelia, singing innocent-sounding, seemingly nonsensical songs that are actually quite sinister. She also has a collection of caged birds, like Ms. Flite in Bleak House, and names them things like "Justice" and "Grief." Unlike Ms. Flite, however, she sometimes releases the birds, and sometimes kills them for fun, all in an effort to channel the erratic nature of fate.

Hafrith, the head lady in waiting, has a way with Ainsley (mostly because Hafrith is a Saint (tm)), and most everyone else pities her and tolerates her oddities -- after all, if you've been abused by the universally vilified Grima Wormtongue, you've got infinite cred. All in all, Ainsley exists in the story for two reasons 1) to show yet another dimension of how Rohan is a broken realm, and how the war has taken a toll on its people and 2) to inject an element of chaos and hypersexuality into Lothiel's circle.

I found I'm actually enjoying writing in @ghouljams fae!AU. Here's Lilac's first meeting with Price, Keegan, and the Changeling/Ainsley.

Lilac stares in terror at the man, fae, standing in her mentor’s garden. He smiles at her and she chokes, shaking as he takes a purposeful step toward her.

“Calm down, little witch,” he chuckles, dropping his heavy hand on her head, “I don’t eat children.” Lilac squeaks at his rough pats before watching with wide eyes as he walks past her, into Miss Witch’s house.

“Price! Stop scaring Lilac!” Miss Witch scolds, her hands on her hips and a frown on her face. The fae, Price, chuckles and strides up to Miss Witch. Suddenly, Lilac sprints to stand between them, her arms outstretched in an attempt to block him from hurting Miss Witch.

“Y-you can’t h-hurt h-her!” She yells, fighting to keep her fear off her face as she stares up at his blue eyes. Price raises an eyebrow at Lilac’s declaration, tilting his head curiously.

“Oh? Are you going to stop me?” he asks, not mocking, but curious. Lilac freezes, unsure of the correct answer when Miss Witch huffs behind her.

“Price,” she intones. The fae raises his hands in surrender, chuckling as he once again steps around Lilac. The girl spins, terrified for her mentor. She knows Miss Witch is heavily warded, that’s just what generational magic does, but Price feels strong. Maybe even stronger than Miss Witch, although magic does what it does, so she might be stronger?

“Lilac,” Miss Witch calls, pulling Lilac from her panicked thoughts. She’s sitting on the bench while Price still stands, looking over his shoulder in amusement, “Go put the herbs back for me please. Then, you can copy down more of those minor spells.” Lilac hesitates, but ultimately, she nods and scurries back into the house, glancing over her shoulder worriedly to the garden.

Cleaning up the herbs takes a minute of squinting at Miss Witch’s handwriting and comparing it to the notes she’s made on the spare notebook Lilac brought. It takes almost ten minutes, but she’s confident at her accuracy. Another forty minutes is taken up by carefully writing out the most basic of spells in various colored pens. Miss Witch mentioned one of her accomplices likes using multiple colors for notes and wanted to see if it would help Lilac concentrate. It worked and now, her grimoire is currently being cleansed of all the black ink that barely meant anything, and they’re waiting for a proper quill and ink set that will copy the multi-colored system that helps Lilac keep her thoughts in order. Beaming at her steady progress, Lilac stands up from her seat and scurries over to the door to the garden, opening her mouth to ask Miss Witch to look over her work, only to stop.

Price is laying on the bench, his head in Miss Witch’s lap, and a soft look on his face as he stares up at her. Miss Witch is humming a song Lilac swears she knows, her fingers combing through the fae’s hair softly, her expression just as soft.

“Y’know, Soap’ll pout when I tell ‘im how nice you are t’ the little witch. Especially when y’re so mean t’ ‘im,” the fae rumbles. Miss Witch scoffs, going so far to tap his nose as they smile at each other.

“Soap’s a grown fae, Lilac is a child. They are completely different, and you know that,” Miss Witch reminds him with a smile, teasing. Price chuckles, his eyes fluttering closed when Miss Witch bends down enough to press a kiss to his forehead.

“Doesn’t mean ‘e won’t bitch,” the fae reiterates before silence surrounds the couple once again. Lilac can’t help but stare, awe and confusion mixing together.

Witches and fae don’t mix, one of the biggest rules Granny beat into Racheal. No witch worth their salt would ever allow a fae into their home, their sanctuary, willingly. But, here they are, Miss Witch completely at ease while Price does nothing more than tease her. No threats of violence, no attempts at violence. It’s a strange thing to witness, after being told and shown reasons that they can’t interact.

Suddenly, a soft knock on the front door startles Lilac from her staring. She slowly turns to the door, blinking in confusion. She’s been here for a few days already, but Miss Witch always knows when customers are coming. Lilac’s never heard a knock at the door and she doesn’t know what to do. Another knock sounds out, low on the door but insistent. Suddenly, Miss Witch strides past Lilac, a fond smile and shake of her head while Price follows with a frown.

“Hello there,” Miss Witch says upon opening the door, “You really need to stop doing this, sweetie. Your mom is going to be worried.”

“And Russ’s gonna be a pain in the ass,” Price grumbles beside Lilac.

“Russ?” she asks, only to jump and squeak when a little changeling wraps their arms around her legs, looking up at her curiously.

“Who?” the little one asks, their voice taking on Miss Witch’s and Price’s and maybe a few other people. Lilac blinks, before slowly raising her head. Miss Witch winces at the sound of so many voices at once, but she smiles.

“She’s my trainee,” Miss Witch explains patiently, “Her name is Lilac.” The changeling hums and chitters like a chipmunk, a smile crossing their face that make’s their cheeks appear chubbier. Lilac smiles back nervously, only for her nerves to be soothed when the child lets go of her legs to grab her hand. They ramble about decay and how it affects objects differently, from leaves turning from green to black, and a squirrel’s body caved in on itself before some birds got to it. It’s interesting, how passionate the kid is about their topic.

“D-do you want t’ read a b-book?” Lilac asks, smiling when the child looks up at her excitedly. They nod and point at a book Miss Witch had told Lilac was about a dog’s life. Taking the book gently from the shelf, Lilac sits on the ground and jolts in surprise as the child climbs into her lap, forcing her to wrap her arms around the kid and rest her chin on their head to read.

They get through two chapters when a man appears with a dog. Lilac looks up and tightens her hold on the changeling fearfully. He’s a tall fae, one that makes promises and demands rewards. One that can stack any deal in his favor.

“I’d appreciate if you’d let my kid go,” he drawls, the German Shepard beside him giving Lilac a warning growl. Swallowing and shying back, she glances down at the changeling worriedly, unsure as to the older fae’s plan for the little one. The fae’s face shifts, from a fake neutral expression to something softer, almost like comfort.

“I’m not gonna hurt him. I need to take him back to his momma,” the fae explains. The changeling on Lilac’s lap beams up at her and nods. Lilac swallows again, before nodding and releasing her hold. The changeling scrambles over to the man, giggling happily as they’re scooped up.

“Alright, you monster,” the fae teases, “Say bye to your new friend.”

“Bye-bye!” the changeling chirps, birdsong weaving through their voice. Lilac relaxes a bit and waves in return, watching as the fae says something to Miss Witch, only for her to scowl at him and Price to narrow his eyes. Quickly, he, his dog, and the changeling leave the cottage, as if this is a normal occasion.

“Is th-this normal?” Lilac asks.

“About every other week,” Miss Witch sighs, rubbing at her temples, “Keegan is a pain, but he’s fairly harmless. Especially around his kid. Just be careful if you see him on the street without his kid or partner.”

“You have trouble with him?” Price asks her, his head snapping to look at her in concern and an almost righteous fury. Miss Witch waves it away.

“No, more like he enjoys getting a rise out of people,” she explains with a sigh. Lilac swears she hears Price mutter about sounding right, but she’s more concerned with her teacher’s frown.

“U-um,” Lilac stutters, “D-do you want t-to have your t-tea out in th-the garden? I-I-I can make it!” Miss Witch blinks at the offer before smiling, patting Lilac’s head.

“Yes, please,” she agrees, turning to her garden and heading out. Lilac feels warm from Miss Witch’s kindness, unable to help but touch where the woman’s hand had patted.

“You’re a pretty good kid,” Price says, startling Lilac from enjoying her warmth. Looking up, a sudden chill runs down her spine at the cold blue that stares down at her. He leans close and warns with smoke curling from his maw, “Don’t do anything too stupid. You hurt her, you can disappear. Clear?” Lilac nods, mute in terror as examples of her ‘disappearance’ form from his smoke. He leans back and suddenly, he’s Price, the strange fae who likes Miss Witch again. He pats her shoulder and saunters out to the garden.

Lilac fixes up the tea and pours out a mug of wine that Miss Witch does every time she goes into the garden, her mind spinning at the whiplash of this past few hours. Especially Price’s threat. Did she do something to upset him? Did she seem like a threat? Carrying the drinks out, Lilac notices that Price is now on the other side of the gate, almost pouting as Miss Witch scowls at him.

“U-um,” she starts, only to tense when Miss Witch snatches up the mug of wine and slams it on the wall.

“Finish that, then on your way,” she snaps.

“I only did that for your protection,” he says, like a reminder or an explanation.

“Just because it was in good intentions doesn’t excuse you for basically threatening my trainee!” she snaps. Price huffs and takes a long drink from his mug, averting his eyes. Miss Witch sighs and turns to a confused Lilac.

“Sorry about the overprotective idiot,” Miss Witch apologizes.

“O-oh, no! I-i-it’s okay!” Lilac tries to assure her, “I m-must’ve done something wrong! I-I can’t do m-m-much right, s-so it’s fine.” Miss Witch gets that pinched look on her face, the same look she gets when Lilac mentions things Granny yelled at her. From the corner of her eye, Price grimaces, putting down his mug.

“No, little witch. Keegan just riled me up and you were an easy target,” Price explains with a sigh, setting his mug down. Lilac blinks at that declaration while Miss Witch sighs. The woman gently scolds the fae while Lilac mulls his words over. Is she an easy target? She’s never been told that, so she’s not sure. Maybe it’s something that will make sense when she’s older.

I'm having prodigal son thoughts about the potential, lost season three now that I'm lurking your blog again. I think if they made it, they would've have had Martin die and Malcolm go on trial for it. There would have been a huge debate for the first part of the season about what charge they would hit him with ("he killed a serial killer" vs "it was self defense" vs "it's straight up murder" vs "he's a whitly"), but ultimately bc Malcolm is the Surgeon's son and some politics in the DA's office, he would've gotten charged with murder in the first degree.

Also, the murder charge would create the opportunity to have flashbacks to the Martin's original trial back in the 90s (I feel like they were holding off showing that for a reason for the first two seasons). There would be parallels between the cases, Jessica reliving everything again, Malcolm's guilt, Ainsley might be pushed to try to exploit the case as a reporter (or even start killing people (like the DA) to try to protect Malcolm), and the Martin hallucination would return.

The prosecutors may try to use Malcolm's mental health as an angle and we may possibly have gotten Malcolm spending time in a psych ward (which I would have been interested in seeing how they portray that, after my own time in one) and maybe forced to go off his meds.

Season three exists in my head. Fox can't cancel my imagination (gripping the edge of the sink as I say this)

definitely agree with this! I know a lot of the fandom says it's self defense so malcolm wouldn't get arrested (and I agree it was self defense and we as the viewer know this but no one else was with martin and malcolm when it happened) but I think it would be more interesting and dramatic from a storytelling perspective if malcolm did get in some legal trouble for what happened. also I think if they killed martin, they wouldn't want to get rid of michael sheen, so he'd be in flashbacks, like you mentioned, and I agree we'd see malcolm's hallucinations of him get worse. I can just imagine martin haunting him and telling him it was all his fault and he is just like he is now, just another killer.

I think it would be interested if they went back to what they hinted at with the FBI firing malcolm in the pilot, with people assuming malcolm must be mentally unstable and thus dangerous, and how that would influence the perspective of people who think malcolm is guilty. ainsley would try and control the narrative through the media, but that might just backfire on her to the point where she takes matters into her own hands like you said. and of course the NYPD team would support him but outside of them, the general public thinks he must be guilty, and that he and martin were somehow working together. and maybe we could finally find out about that flashback of martin guiding malcolm to stab a body in the woods during the infamous camping trip!!!

there is just so much that could be done with season 3, it's a shame it didn't get renewed but I know I'm preaching to the choir with that one :(

My jaw ticked as I glared down at her, but her face was made of stone—pure marble as she looked back with her cold blue eyes. “So you’re the one that set that fucking thing loose? That fucking monster that ran around the damn police station, the fucking—”

“The T-00 Tyrant, the Nemesis project, yes I’m quite aware of my work, Ms. Blake.” Imogen Edwards didn’t flinch when she spoke of it, nor did she blink as she shifted, crossing her ankles under the table as she carefully interlocked her fingers—her nails perfectly manicured and painted red—and rested them on the metal table. The glass of water remained untouched and ignored. “If you brought me just to go through every little file regarding the work relevant to any project that I’ve had a hand in, we will be here for a long time.”

I couldn’t tell what pissed me off more—her lack of empathy or the fact that even if her hands were covered in blood, she still looked so perfectly put together. A white button up with a black skirt and blazer, she didn’t look detained by Chris, she looked as if she had just stepped out of the office. “People died in that city, only a handful of people actually survived what you and Umbrella did—”

“And as I said to your overly muscled brute of a colleague, I was explicit in my orders to shut down certain projects due to lack of profit and the overconsumption of resources. Dr. Ainsley Spencer and I spoke in length over the phone regarding it. I wonder, when you were offering her sanctuary to correct her ‘sins’, if she perhaps mentioned that.” I froze and stared at the woman sitting at the table. The metal chrome wasn’t complementary by far, but she still sat like a queen, her head high and shoulders back. As if this was a regular meeting—as if she wasn’t the reason so many of us went through hell. The redhead sighed and rolled her eyes, the first show of emotion since I had stormed into the room and continued with a condescending tone. “That means it was costing too much money and—”

“I know what it fucking means.” I snapped. My hands began to shake as the anger, the guilt, the memories came flooding back. We had looked so hard for her; Chris was so set on getting her so that we could get more information—bring her to justice and get her to cooperate. That was the goal. But I seethed as the emotions got the best of me, images that I had tried so hard to forget came right back to the surface. “Innocent people died because of what you did—”

“Innocent people died due to carelessness of the professionals in charge of the subjects—the professionalism was quite lacking in Dr. Birkin himself as he became unstable. However I don’t expect you to understand things that are clearly above you—”

“And the people you experimented on?” I asked, my tone calmly edged as I took a step closer to the table. “The people in the hospitals? The people you took in for experimental treatment—what about them? What were they, huh?” Guilt ripped through me, but that only fueled my anger. Images of the day we had sat in the hospital and signed the papers, only to see him for the last time as something else entirely.

As if reading my thoughts, Imogen leaned forward with a smug glint in her eyes with a ghost of a smile playing at the corner of her mouth. “No profit, no results, useless. Waste of valuable resources and a damn waste of my time, most of them were dying anyway. They were expendable. It would have been comforting to know that their sacrifice meant something, but nothing came from the information we received from them or the testing we performed on them. I goddamn waste of time—”

It only took a second for my hand to reach out and clutch a fistful of her hair before swiftly, with all my strength, slamming her face against the metal table. A loud crunch sounded with the bang that echoed off the thick walls lined with tile and a one-way mirror. I could almost feel the panic and hear the yelling as they scrambled outside, and it was only another second before Chris burst in the room and grabbed me, pulling me away from her as blood pooled around her. As soon as my grip was released, she raised her head, blood pouring down her nose, dripping onto the table and her shirt, the red spreading quickly through the expensive fabric. She barely flinched, but her eyes blazed.

“Fuck you, fuck you!” I yelled as I fought against Chris, desperate to finish what I started.

“Wren, enough! Let it go!” Chris called, but he just went ignored as Jill and Carlos rushed in, hovering at the door as they watched in shock.

“Do you always treat people like this? So barbaric and unbecoming, what would your father say, Ms. Blake?” I choked as I stared at her, but she just offered a bloodstained smile in return. “Stephen Blake, early to mid-sixties, diagnosed with a disease that was rare even by our standards. I remember his case being quite abnormal.”

Tears fell as I glared at her, hating her and wanting nothing more than to claw her eyes out. “You fucking bitch, you killed him! You turned him into a fucking monster after promising to help him, you—”

“And did you read the fine print, Ms. Blake? When you signed the papers that gave us permission to your father’s dying body, did you or did you not read the contract?” Imogen scoffed, specks of blood spraying over the table. “You signed him over to us, you were told that it was experimental treatment with great risks, and you signed without even reading it, didn’t you? Come now, who really is at fault for the death of your father? The company that attempted to make his last months’ worth something or the daughter that was so tired of him, she shifted responsibility to the first person that offered her a pen?”

In your opinion, who is the top 10 most sluttiest males in historical romance?

I don't know if I have like... a top 10, exactly? But I'd say that while most romance heroes are fairly experienced unless there's an actual plot point indicating otherwise (virgin hero, hero who's relatively inexperienced with an experienced heroine) in historical romance there's a difference between a *rake* and a generally experienced hero.

To me, the best rakes I've read have been:

Sebastian St. Vincent, Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas. Obviously, a very definitive rake. The fact that the book's plot hinges on him being celibate says a lot.

Erik MacSorley, The Hawk by Monica McCarty. He's just a really fun-loving, rakish hero, especially compared to a lot of the more serious heroes in this series. Jumps out of water fully naked a lot.

"Mac" MacKenzie, Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage by Jennifer Ashley. What makes Mac different is that he's married when the book begins. Most of this book is spent with him wanting to reunite with Isabella, but you get a lot of insight into his history with her before the book began, and his reputation.

The Duke of Lovingdon, When the Duke Was Wicked by Lorraine Heath. Lovingdon is special because he's very rakish, but he's a *tragic rake*, so he's only slutty because he can't handle being in an emotionally intimate relationship after the deaths of his wife and his child. Plus, there's a wild edge to this book because if you read the previous series, you see Lovingdon as a tiny child. He like.... grew up a lot.

Leo Ramsgate, the Marquess of Savage, How to Steal A Scoundrel's Heart by Vivienne Lorret. Notably rakish in that he has a System (a mistress has to sign a four-month contract, and she has to stay with him for no more and no less time). He's also just like, super convincingly experienced.

Kit Ward, The Lady Gets Lucky by Joanna Shupe. This one is notable in that everyone basically only thinks of Kit as a slut. He demands to be taken seriously!!!

Ransom Seymour, the Duke of Ainsley, Waking Up with The Duke by Lorraine Heath. Notable in that Ainsley is Extremely Classy in his rakishness (will not have sex with another guy's wife... typically) but is so notably good in bed that he is a part of the SPECTACULARLY named London's Greatest Lovers series; and also, his best friend specifically asks him to fuck his wife because Ainsley is known to be a great lay.

Edward Alcott, The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath. Lorraine writes really good rakes. But also, this one is notable in that Edward spends most of the book growing away from this, and becoming a good husband and father.

Gabriel St. John, the Marquess of Ralston by Sarah MacLean. Ralston is a magnificent slut. He's very seductive, very charming, very game, and very incapable of Deep Feelings. The book notably opens on the heroine (as a teenager) spying on him sucking on some titties. Like. Please.

The Duke of Avendale, The Duke and the Lady in Red by Lorraine Heath. What I find notable about Avendale is a) he's known for his orgies and b) he is a cold rake. He's not like, super fun about it, he just is really callous, if good in bed. The charm is skin deep. He really doesn't feel a lot. Until he meets The One, obviously, and then this book becomes a highly emotional novel that made me cry so.

Kinsey, author; Elizabeth Knowelden, narrator) - very entertaining historical cozy mystery with charming characters and not heavy historical accuracy (which doesn't detract in any way from the entertainment value (at least for me)). Plus the fact that they are free in both ebook & audio via KU. Definitely going to read more.

Tiền vệ đội khách theo đà vung chân đá nhưng chưa rõ đã trúng đối thủ hay chưa, dù sao trọng tài đã thổi phạt đền còn VAR không can thiệp.

Ở trận tiếp theo, thầy trò Conte làm khách trên sân của Everton tối 3/4, sau hai tuần nghỉ nhường sân chơi cho các ĐTQG.
