Yesterday 16th December 2023, yet another demonstration in Barcelona (Catalonia) calling for the end of Israel's genocide of the Palestinian people, for Europe to stop buying and selling weapons with Israel, and for the end of apartheid.

To pressure the Government of Catalonia to stand their ground and join the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel, the demonstration ended with a gathering in front of the Government of Catalonia where the protestors played the sounds that people of Gaza hear:

This long white paper is the list of names of the Palestinians who have been killed by Israel since October.

The banners they hold mean "Stop the genocide in Palestine. End arms trade with Israel" in the Catalan language.

One thing i loved about this All Quiet On The Western Front adaptation is how they focus on food.

There's a scene from the book that i will never forget about how the rats crawled on their faces while they slept to get to the bread stored under their pillows. That imagery has been with me since i read it back in high school. And i know starvation and food rationing is a common aspect to focus on in war movies, but i really love how this film handled it.

Whenever we see soldiers eating in this film, they are huddled together, eating quickly, messily. They are grateful for the smallest morsel. They steal food. They risk their lives for food.

Whenever we see the wealthy, the politicians, the older men who are not in the trenches eating, there is tons of space between them. They eat elegant dishes. They are in no rush. They sit alone in the fancy dining car of the train with all their courses laid out. They sit the entire length of a great dining table apart while chatting casually about their upbringings. They complain about their perfectly good croissants not being freshly made that day. This meal is not life or death for them. It's not snatching a hurried bite under the worst conditions imaginable, with another blood-stained, mud-covered soldier by their side; it's a leisure activity with no sense of community. No impending doom.

Many of these people are supporting the state of Israel partially because it fulfills prophecy for the end times. I'm not exaggerating, it's because they believe the existence of the state of Israel is necessary to bring about the end of the world, and they think this is a good thing. I remember growing up and being taught that Israel's existence as a state was vital, and to not worry about the wars in Southwest Asia (middle east) because it meant we'd all be going to heaven soon. It didn't matter who died, they were convinced of this.

There's a lot of factors at play but that is absolutely one of them whether individual people know it or not. Pastors obfuscate this, only bring it up among congregations that they know agree, don't present it as the main reason, but it's one of them. It's not even about love and support for Jewish people, these same people are often ones who hate Jewish people the most. It's their own religious self-interest intertwined with imperialistic christofascism

That comment was left by a Ukrainian twitter user and I think it's a reference to the new "documentary" film Russians at War, which is made by a Russian-Canadian director with the purpose of portraying Russia as the victim and the Russian army as justified in its invasion of Ukraine. The movie was paid by North American organizations that justify Russia's imperialism and military occupation of Ukraine as well as by Canadian tax money. It received 340,000 Canadian dollars from the Government of Canada and is being shown as part of the Toronto International Film Festival. It also premiered in the Venice Biennale festival. (Who said that Western Europe has cut cultural relations with Russia?)

The Russian army is committing multiple war crimes against the Ukrainian population in a war fuelled by Russian imperialism. The Russian occupation destroys homes, villages, schools, hospitals, civilian infrastructure, it kills in bombings and in extrajudicial killings, they rape and torture and execute in the most humiliating ways they find. Everything is documented, yet it seems like the world wants to look in a different direction and pretend nothing is happening there.

The director of the Russians at War movie, who filmed it by living with the army for 7 months (including entering Ukrainian territory with the army, which is an international crime and goes against Ukrainian sovereignty), said that the Russian army does not commit war crimes and that it's a Western media invention, and that the soldiers they met are "absolutely ordinary guys" and that the purpose of the movie is to show the "human side" of the war (only the Russian side is included in that sentence, though).

"A case of polio was confirmed in Gaza last week, in a 10-month-old child. It was the first such instance of the lifelong crippling disease in over 25 years. Though there is no cure, vaccines against the disease can protect a child for life.

The child had developed paralysis in the lower left leg and is reported to be in a stable condition.

“Polio will not make the distinction between Palestinian and Israeli children,” UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said last week, highlighting the need for urgent pause in fighting to mitigate the risk of spread of the disease."
