If I had a penny for every time Liu Tao played a hot girlboss wife/gf to a flimsy gremlin of a scholar-strategist malewife, who also has a deeply homoerotic friendship with a sad little man he's trying to help become the crown prince I would have two pennies. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Oh and there's also Guy played by Wang Jinsong who has a long and complicated history with the aforementioned asshole father:

Anyway the point of this post is that if you have seen either Nirvana in Fire or The Advisor's Alliance you should definitely check out the other because you would definitely probably enjoy it very much.

oh man, i always thought that zhang luyi's tomb raiding drama will air before this, but i guess we are getting a new yu hewei drama first! city of the city will air on april 9th, 2024.
there are 3 three-body cast members in the drama: yu hewei, chen jin, tu songyan (yhw is the lead, but i think cj and tsy only have guest/supporting roles). the cast of the drama is pretty good (eg. wang xiao & wang jinsong), but it's kinda not my genre since it's mainly about business, economy, and corporate wars. however, it's still something i can endure for this cast. i might start to gif some new yhw!

Agree so much that the supporting characters were the highlights of The Ingenious One. I would happily watch a spinoff show about Jin Shi Liang rescuing/adopting more orphans and Mo Bufan kept things lively and intriguing even when the show was running out of steam in the last 3rd act or so…Qin Lan’s Su Huairou was so lovely and regal, and the brief appearances of Wang Jinsong and Kara Wai made me feel (during their limited screen time) that the drama would have higher stakes than it really did, how I wish it could’ve lived up to its potential, given the cast

The Ingenious One
Pretty, but kind of... lackluster? I'm still trying to put my finger on why this drama isn't really working for me, but I guess it's a multitude of factors.
It's visually pleasing, and quite well-made in terms of aesthetics and the overall plot is far from boring - the ML is supposed to be the king of planning and unprecedented backstabbing, and he kind of lives up to his name, but things just don't... click.
Maybe the chemistry is lacking between the ML and FL, or maybe they were just written a bit awkwardly for my taste. The guy just left his sect going for the REVENGE OF HIS LIFE for the deaths of 313 men and women killed in his village for no apparent reason, and a few minutes later he meets this girl and boom... Instant falling in love, heart eyes instead of a steamy revenge that's been supposedly poisoning his heart for more than a decade. Well, you can't really blame the guy after 15 years of abstinence while living as a monk, but still. Priorities?
And you can't really make what the show is about - the drive for revenge is simply not there, nor are the emotions that would make you believe the ML's agenda (it could be the acting or simply that he's written like that). The ML's emotional restoration arc (going from cold and calculative to 'now I actually want people around me to be happy' is also kind of meh...). And it's also what I can say about the main couple - just meh. Watchable, but far from engaging.
On the other hand, there's a plentiful of supporting roles that really stood out and were quite delicious to watch. Su Mingyu, the young master of the silk business empire, is a wuxia fighter wannabee, who, upon getting into an actual fight, having his first kill, and going all bloody, has a strong PTSD afterward, and it's played around beautifully (it was such a realistic touch, I loved it). His love interest, Ke Menglan, a 'slave' girl who works at the gambling house, is smart, considerate, and likes him a lot, but tries to stay away as she's from a super lower class. Their story is endearing and quite romantic.
Jin Biao, a loving and caring assassin who works to support a bunch of homeless kids, is one of the biggest highlights of the show. Along with Mo Bufan, an extravagant banker, who loves money more than anything else, but adores his adopted son even more. He's kind of a friend/mentor to ML, but his reasoning and character are much clearer, hence, you can connect to him more.
Heck, even the bad guys are quite understandable in their agendas, unlike the ML and FL, playing out the old as-the-time itself trope of Romeo and Juliet - two souls from two opposing sects who fall madly in love with each other. This is such a tragedy for a show - it should've been about vengeance, but instead, they put all their money on romance, which couldn't carry it all the way through.
But if you can get past all that - the supporting characters make watching this show worthwhile. The ending is also satisfactory and our boy gets to win over the main antagonist in a smart and cool way, and still get the happy ending he deserved. Which isn't something you can say about many cdramas, really.
All in all, it's a 7/10 for me, the show gave me close to no depth, and you kind of expect that because it's not advertised as something lighthearted, silly, and romantic. I guess now I'm just spoilt by the brilliant plot writing and character development of JOL and expect all directors to treat their viewers like they actually have a brain XD Well, that's just me)))

Hey there I’m getting confused so I just thought I’d ask. You post a lot about NIF, various items with the word Kingdom, and now AA. The thing is a lot of the names seem to be the same and the faces(?)
Are these shows/stories related, if so how, and is there a watch order you’d recommend?? Thanks :)
Oh hello there I'M GLAD YOU ASKED
Tumblr media
So.
The Three Kingdoms era was a period of Chinese history that spanned from about the end of the Han dynasty in 189AD to the the year 280AD (at which point China was finally re-unified). It was always a very popular era for the country, which gave rise to a lot of popular heroes. The first well-known person to make a full narrative out of the events was a fellow called Luo Guanzhong, who wrote a ~800k word novel called The Romance of the Three Kingdoms in the 14th century, a highly romanticised (lol) version of events which brutalises some historical figures (r.i.p Zhou Yu) and glorfies others (incl. one of China's greatest blorbos, Zhuge Liang).
Here he is, in various forms:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I started by reading the book, mostly because it's one of the Four Great Classic Chinese Novels, and I wanted to learn a bit more about actual Chinese history and culture instead of just watching endless fantasy.
And then after the book, I discovered that there are unsurprisingly a LOT of adaptations of it! Some are more faithful to the novel, others more faithful to history, and some are just... *War flashbacks from the few episodes I watched of The Three Kingdoms RPG*
As far as I am aware, the two main adaptations that attempted to serialise the whole goddamn story rather than just some parts of it, are the 1994 TV adaptation, and the 2010 remake. I decided to watch the 2010 first because I liked the look of it (and I also found a nice HD download of, with good subtitles).
The Advisors Alliance is kinda like the "bad guy POV" adaptation which focuses solely on the story of Sima Yi, who shows up towards the middle of ROT3K and (SPOILER) basically wins in the end. He's not actually a bad guy, but he's often portrayed as the antagonist because he was on the opposite side to history's greatest blorbo, Zhuge Liang.
It can get a bit confusing because this fellow, Yu Hewei, seems to REALLY LIKE the three kingdoms era because he has so far starred in no less than FOUR different adaptions as various characters. But he decided to really confuse everyone by being Zhuge Liang's beloved liege lord Liu Bei in the 2010 adaptation, as well as Liu Bei's primary sworn enemy Cao Cao in the Advisors Alliance (2017). So yeah, we all like to laugh about that.
Tumblr media
Yu Hewei every time he sees someone is making a new ROT3K adaptation:
Tumblr media
As for Nirvana in Fire, that's pure fiction and functionally unrelated to The Romance of the Three Kingdoms (though perhaps the author took some inspiration, who knows?) But the main female lead is played by the same woman in both AA and NIF, the delightful Liu Tao:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And both shows also share another cast member, Wang Jinsong, who plays "disillusioned old friend of the king/emperor who now wants a divorce".
As for which you want to watch first? Well I guess that's up to you. Nirvana in Fire is a GREAT piece of fiction and is certainly more popular fandom-wise. If you're interested in digging your teeth into some messy, bloody political history full of homoerotic yearning, watch The Three Kingdoms. And AA is kind of like, a cross between the two!
P.S Red Cliff (2008) is another good fun adaptation that focuses on just a small part of the three kingdoms story, and has what I think is personally the best (or at least, fairest and kindest) of all the Zhou Yu portrayals.

Yesss, I love Yan Que (And Wang Jinsong is one of the few cdrama actors actually old enough to qualify as a dilf, in my criteria.)
However I would also like to present another candidate not listed above, who doesn’t even have the need for the minor redemption Yan Que kind of needs before he is really decent:
Luo Wenzhou’s dad in Modu!! Sorry no pics since he is novel only, but he’s fantastic.
These contestants have cleared the (very, very, very low bar) to be the rare breed of cdrama father who is both a (relatively) good father* and ALSO still be alive! And they deserve recognition for this
*some of them clear the bar better than others...
Propaganda, examples, and write-ins absolutely welcome!

Wang Yibo participated in the symposium of the China Canton Federation: “I will know the law and obey the law ; consciously accept the supervision of all sectors of society”
{article source}
Recently, well-known actor Wang Yibo was invited to participate in a symposium on professional ethics for radio and television literary and art workers, and discussed the importance of professional ethics construction with experts and scholars in the industry. Wang Yibo has attracted much attention for his outstanding acting skills and positive social image.
At the symposium, Wang Yibo actively participated in the discussion with his unique perspective and rich experience, and shared with the participants his experience and insights on the road of performing arts. He emphasized the importance of the professional ethics of literary and art workers to the healthy development of the industry, and called on the majority of practitioners to use good professional ethics as a background, shape a good social image, and contribute to the prosperity of the literary and artistic industry.
Everyone knows that Wang Yibo, as a literary and art worker, has participated in a symposium on the construction of radio and television professional ethics. During the filming of "Bright Road" this year, he participated in a video conference wearing a costume. This time it is a collective activity of literary and art workers. From the participants at the scene, it can be seen that Wang Yibo is obviously the youngest one.
We saw Zhang Kaili, Tang Guoqiang, Wang Jinsong and other senior actors at the scene. In the group photo, Wang Yibo looked very cute and he stood very seriously, completely different from himself on the screen and in the camera. This is the first time we have seen Wang Yibo like this.
Being able to represent young actors to participate in the symposium, Wang Yibo not only has both popularity and professional ability, but also has professional ethics, serious dedication, self-discipline and humility, and his words and deeds are highly recognized.
Participating in the symposium requires sharing experience. Wang Yibo not only shared his experience with people in the same industry, but also poured out some difficulties encountered in his work. His speech was not only full of ideas, but also sincere, which made people feel his deep attention and serious attitude to the construction of professional ethics.

Nirvana in Fire
Do you think I don’t know that this is a terrible idea? But you must also see, the Court is already a mess, the whole country looks nothing like what we wanted all those years ago. We helped this person seize the throne. Now that Brother Lin Xie is no longer here, I will be the one to put a stop to it all.
