I've decided to start categorising my pairings.

Pairings that are canon in the source material. Ex: Timbern, Harlivy,

Pairings that aren't officially recognised in current canon but A-are canon in another universe, B- are supported by the writers if not the publishers, and C- have been written as if canon OR is canon, but one-sided. Ex: HalBarry, Boostle, TimKon, Aquamanhunter

Pairings that aren't canon romantically, but the characters still love one another. Ex: JayRoy, BruHarvey, StephCass

Pairings that aren't canon, but have great chemistry and I like to rotate them in my head and squish them together while going 'Now kiss!' Ex: ColdFlash, WallyPiper, TimOwen

I don't actually ship them, but their portmanteau is funny and that's good enough for me. Ex: DickStroke, DickJokes

I'm not trying to hate on any previous anons but if your ship has over 1,000 fics on ao3 that is..... not a rarepair, to me personally. your ships should have like less than 500 fics in a fandom the size of dc's for it to be a proper rarepair. ideas for ships I was thinking for for this week each have less 150 fics on ao3... (halollie, helbabs, anitacissie, wallypiper, dickjoey, cassrose, roygarth, rosecassie, for examples). halbarry and stephcass are fully not rarepairs to me imo

While the main purpose of this event is to highlight rarepairs, I'm asking all contributors to use their own discretion as there is no way for us to actually "define" a rarepair. I've mentioned before I like to use ao3 and compare my ship to other ships to give me an idea of whether my ship is indeed "rare" but that isn't the only method you can use. (another good resource may be reaching out to @ao3statistics)

I will say regarding ships like halbarry and stephcass, they are rarer when compared to some other dc ships, so perhaps they are using that as their method for determining rarity. 🤷‍♀️
