The door to your apartment closed shut just as you had finished setting up your living room to the ‘BatCave’, as Seokmin liked to call it. It was something the two of you started since your freshman year when you were assigned to the dingy, tiny campus dorms and you had to make do with the small space the two of you had. There was no specific shape or structure to the BatCave. It was a discombobulated heap of pillows and blankets thrown atop an air mattress that you and Seokmin salvaged from an elderly woman’s yard sale during the spring semester in your sophomore year.
“Here, here! I’m here!” Your ears perked up at the sound of your best friend entering the foyer and Seokmin quickly made his way to you with two big plastic bags in hand, pressing a quick kiss to your head that made your heart flutter. “How are you feeling?”
You scrunched up your nose and spoke in a nasally voice. “Sick.”
Seokmin gave you an empathetic smile and reached into his coat pocket before handing you a box of Sinex. “Happy Birthday and Merry Christmas. Didn’t I bring you one this morning too?”
“I don't know where it went! I lost it!” You sniffled.
Seokmin busied himself with making a big show out of taking off his outer jacket, revealing his Halloween that he spent $180 on. The Deadpool costume was originally your idea, suggesting that he should buy a Deadpool onesie and call it a costume, but your best friend insisted on going full out. You thought it was ridiculous that he spent almost 200 dollars on a Halloween costume, but Seokmin thought otherwise.
‘Go big or go home.’ Was what he had said.
… At least, that’s what you think he said. He was way too drunk to form a coherent sentence at the time.
“Well, it’s gotta be somewhere.” Seokmin emphasized with a wave of his hands. “I’m going to change. You still have my clothes, right?”
You nodded and waved him towards your bedroom. “Second drawer on the right. It should be on the way top.”
“Thanks, this suit keeps giving me a wedgie and it doesn’t feel really…” He paused to adjust himself with a pained look on his face. “Nice.”
You watched with a smile as he disappeared into your bedroom, adjusting himself under the suit on the way. “You should demand a refund.” You called out to him.
“Oh, you bet I will!” He called back and you barked out a short laugh.
You don’t know how much time has passed since Seokmin first came into your apartment. The glass container that once held Mingyu’s famous pumpkin cheesecake bars was void, not a single crumb leftover. The ceramic mugs that were once filled to the brim with hot chocolate were empty, and the popcorn bowl resting in Seokmin’s lap was half empty.
Everything was perfect. The congestion in your nose had disappeared, thanks to the Sinex Seokmin had bought you, your fever was gone, and you had never felt more warm in your life, nestled into Seokmin’s side with his arm wrapped around your shoulder. Your favorite fleece blanket was pulled up into your chin and you were positive you had reached the most optimal comfortable state possible for a human.
“You okay?” Seokmin asked quietly. You felt the low hum of his voice reverberate in his chest where your head laid and you nodded.
“Yeah… just tired.” You responded quietly. “I think the Benadryl is in my system; I’m sleepy.”
He hummed and wrapped both arms around you, pressing his lips against your temple. “Go to sleep. I’ll be here when you wake up.”
You nestled yourself further into his chest and nodded again, taking note of the faint scent of his cologne mixed with his shampoo and the calming effect it had on you. Your fingers searched for refuge in Seokmin’s embrace and you let out a small sigh as he began to stroke your head, his gaze still fixed on the screen, where Rory was dying Lane’s hair purple.
Your eyes fluttered closed in resignation, a battle lost against sleep and fatigue. The last thing you remembered before falling asleep was Seokmin’s finger lightly tracing indiscernible patterns on your shoulder.
The gentle pitter patter of the raindrops against your window jolted you awake and you shifted under the blanket, cozying yourself closer into Seokmin’s embrace. The movie on your laptop was paused, and Seokmin had his arm under your head, his eyes closed and lips slightly ajar as he took shallow breaths in his sleep.
The clock on the wall told you it was way too early–or late–to be awake, and you groggily rubbed at your eyes. The lights outside casted an eerie shadow on Seokmin’s sleeping face as his lashes fluttered ever gently against his skin, drawing your attention to the mole he had under his eye.
You reached out, lightly tracing the small freckle with your fingertip. There was a familiar fluttering in your stomach as your eyes scanned Seokmin’s face, your hand lightly resting on the side of his face. He nuzzled his face against your palm, humming quietly as he tugged you closer to his chest with the arm he had resting underneath you.
Heat rushed to your face as Seokmin rested his chin atop the crown of your head. The two of you remained like that, basking in each other’s warmth and comfort as the hand on the clock endlessly ticked by.
With every tick of the clock, you felt yourself falling harder and faster for the man who was currently holding you in his embrace. Seokmin was your best friend, your other half. The two of you met during freshman year move-in day, and you had known him as the smiley boy who lived across the hall. But now, you were in your senior year and he was Lee Seokmin, an irreplaceable and undoubtedly, the most favorite part of your life. Without Seokmin, you were missing a part of yourself.
“I love you.” The words tumbled out of your mouth before you could register what they were. It was barely above a whisper, spoken into the darkness where it would remain a secret between only you and the shadows.
Your words hung heavily in the air and you sucked in a quiet breath, nervous that you might’ve woken Seokmin up. There was a moment of silence, like the world was holding its breath to wait for his response, if he had one at all.
Seokmin’s eyes fluttered open and his warm, brown eyes stared into yours. Under the pale moonlight, his eyes sparkled, like pools of warm and enticing honey, drawing you in. Your eyes flickered to his mole, then the hand you still had resting on his cheek.
“Sorry, I–” Fumbling, you tried to draw your hand away but Seokmin stopped you, resting his hand atop of yours.
“... I love you too.”

𖦹 ࣪˖ drunk on halloween. x.minghao
“on that halloween, you told me you weren’t drinking. i believed you.”
summary- your best friend seokmin told you not to mess around with minghao. even if it was only one time. now you’re avoiding minghao and all the feelings he gives you. when jun invites you to his halloween party how can you avoid minghao when he’s jun’s best friend. it’ll hopefully be fine. wrong!!
warnings- angst, smoking weed, alcoholic consumption, slow burn kinda???, sorry if this is long, smut with plot, doggystyle, softdom!minghao, sub!reader, dirty talk, pet names- baby, love, pretty, creampie, makeup sex, kinda mean reader, lmk if i missed anything
authors note- hello!!! people are really be so nice about my works im gonna cry i hope you guys like this one<3
you couldn’t have asked the universe for a better best friend. seokmin was so sweet to you and would drop anything if that meant you needed him. he knows you like the back of his hand. he is the best friend anyone would love to have. you appreciate him and all of his kind gestures. he would walk you to class and walk you home. he would grab you food and get you snacks without expecting anything in return. you were happy to be living with seokmin. the only con about seokmin was his friends.
not that you didn’t like them or anything they were great. you loved seokmins friends. just not who they bring over sometimes. which is fine you and seokmin live in a shared dorm so it is his space too. the first day you met minghao you told seokmin immediately after that he was cute and asked if he single.
seokmin seemed uncomfortable with your question. “yes he is single. but that is because he chooses to be. he has a lot of people interested in him. he doesn’t necessarily choose one..” he says kinda sounding uneasy. “okay thats fine he’s literally so hot i’d fuck.” he shakes his head. “i don’t think thats a good idea.” you ignored him. you shouldn’t have but you did.
you got with minghao the next week. he fucked you at his house and paying no attention to you ever again. you kinda expected that but what you didn’t expect was to never stop thinking about him. you would do anything to stop yourself from thinking about him. how could you? hes seokmins friend and he is always invited over to the hangouts at the dorm. minghao never saying a word to you other than a quick greeting when he arrives with the others. you tried not to let this hurt your feelings. you don’t know why you cared as much as you did. seokmin told you multiple times that it was a bad idea. you fucked yourself over. feelings were never supposed to be involved. but they always get involved with you. you fall quickly and for the wrong people.
if you would’ve just listened to seokmin you wouldn’t be crying in your room while him and all his friends are downstairs drinking. you don’t even know why you were sobbing in bed at 7:30pm when you could easily be drinking.
hearing a knock on your door. “y/n you gonna come down? i miss you.” you hear seokmim say thru the door. “i-i think im gonna pass tonight seok. im not feeling good.” you say trying to sound as normal as possible through your tears. “are you okay? can i come in?” he says a little louder through the door. “no!!! its okay seokmin i think im just gonna sleep it off. go have fun!!.” he sighs and says okay before heading back downstairs.
this occurred every time the guys would hangout at your dorm. you would have an excuse not to hangout with them. like “oh no i have homework.” “can’t i have work.” “going over to my friends tonight.” seokmin caught on pretty quick. he is not stupid and his is your best friend after all. so he stopped having the guys come to your dorm so much. wanting you to get the space and time you need. he would always go to their place. never forgetting to invite you of course.
always politely declining telling seokmin you’ll see him when he gets home. seokmin asks if the guys can come over later saying that minghao wouldn’t be there. giving you a feeling of relief you agree quickly and watch as he leaves for the day. you’re expecting them to come later in the night so you buy yourself sometime to get ready and cook some dinner. not paying attention to the short shorts and tank top you’re wearing without a bra. you’re in your dorm why wouldn’t you be comfortable.
not checking to see that seokmin sent you a text saying he would be home early with minghao included with the rest of the guys. you continue to cook your food sitting down to eat as the front door opens. you immediately see him cursing at yourself forgetting what you’re wearing and what you’re listening to. quickly turning it off. greeting all of the boys that came over. getting up to hug seokmin. he hugs you back quickly whispering to you “i’m sorry i sent you a text saying he was gonna come late but he showed up with jun i hope it’ll be okay.” you nod smiling at seokmin. “it’s okay i can just go up to my room.” he shakes his head. “please don’t i want to hangout with you too i don’t want to have to choose. come onnn vernon brought over some weed. come on lets smoke a little and then you can decide if you want to leave.”
you sigh before deciding you didn’t want to watch love island in your room alone right now and follow seokmin into the living room. “y/n is joining us tonight boys.” you hear him say smiling before sitting in between vernon and soonyoung. “damn im surprised you never want to hangout with us.” vernon says side hugging you slightly. “not true im just- busy.” you hope they believe your terrible lie knowing that you are not busy at all. very much the opposite. watching the other three boys pass the joint slowly making its way to you. you take a couple hits catching a few glances from minghao. you choose to ignore him as a whole like he does to you. “what about tmr? you coming to my halloween party?” you hear jun say causing all the boys to look at you waiting for your answer. “u-uh maybe we’ll have to see. i don’t even have a costume.” you quickly look at seokmin who is just listening to you. “just be like a cat or something.” minghao blurts out. “how original thank you minghao.” you say sarcastically not even looking his way. “just a suggestion.” he says going back to look at his phone. you roll your eyes taking a couple more hits of the joint before turning on the movie for the night.
you enjoyed hanging out with them tonight. the extra company is nice and you always enjoyed smoking with them. they are pretty funny while high. waving them goodbye as they are leaving around midnight after seokmin ordered them a uber each of them too high to drive. heading up to your room to lay down. hearing a slight knock on your door. “are you going to sleep? do you want to cuddle?” you hear seokmin ask quickly getting up to let him into your room. “of course.” you pull him into your room and lay in your bed laying down with him in your arms. “can i sleep here i don’t wanna get up.” he laughs and pulls you closer. “mhm.” you respond falling asleep in his arms. him falling asleep shortly after you.
—
the next day consisted of seokmin taking you shopping to get a costume for juns party. you have decided to go with a pirate to match seokmin. arriving back at home a little bit before 5pm. you finish getting ready 30 mins after hoping into the shower. “seokmin what do we think?” you ask walking into the living room where he’s waiting for you. he looks at you up and down. “okay im not trying to be weird or anything but you look really fucking hot.” he doesn’t take his eyes off you. “its not weird seok i don’t mind but are you serious does it look good?” he nods “if you weren’t my best friend-“ you cut him off “okay thats enough you pervert lets go.” he laughs at you and grabs his keys and your hand heading to his car. “okay are we going straight to juns?” seokmin nods starting the car. making your way to juns.
—
arriving 15 mins later. “okay!!! we need to set some rules.” seokmin says turning to look at you. “rules? seokmin why do i need rules.” he laughs “the only rule is you can’t leave me.” he says getting out of the car after you. “okay deal.” you guys head into juns house looking around knowing little to no one.
this is gonna be a long night. you thought to yourself making your way over with seokmin to greet your friends. “guys!!! im so happy you made it.” jun pulls you both into a hug. “most of the guys are outside by the pool or probably getting a drink. ill let them know you’re here.” you smile at jun. minghao walking up with vernon to you three shortly after the encounter. “wassup guys. dang y/n your costume looks very good.” vernon say slightly eyeing you receiving a mental glare from minghao and a real glare from seokmin. “and she is off limits okay. you guys have hurt her enough.” seokmin doesn’t know why he said this receiving a weird look from minghao. uh im gonna go find soonyoung.” minghao says quickly walking off. “sorry.” seokmin whispers to you then going back to talking to jun.
the night feels like a blur. not because you’re intoxicated. you’re in fact very sober. sober to the point where seokmins screaming the music is making your head hurt. “seok im getting some fresh air.” he nods not paying anymore attention to you as you walk through the crowd. one things you didn’t want to see is minghao tongue deep in one of your friends mouth. not even paying attention to anyone else around them. you know you shouldn’t be watching this but it’s hard to look away. you don’t know how or why but not you were full on sobbing. you push your way out of the house to the front lawn. you sigh hearing someone call out your name. “y/n! what are you doing outside? its fucking cold.” minghao says coming to sit next to you. “what do you want?” he laughs “what’s wrong? you seem upset.” you look at him intensely trying not to burst into tears again. “minghao can’t you just leave me alone? go back to getting drunk and fucking random girls.” you say looking away from him. “actually im not drinking tonight. im perfectly sober.” he says getting up and walking away without another word. leaving you with your thoughts.
—
20 mins later you finally decide you should probably go back inside. walking in eyes immediately looking for minghao. seeing him being led into one of the rooms by a different girl. you scoff immediately heading to get a strong drink. you take a couple shots and get your drink searching for seokmin now being stopped my soonyoung. “if you’re looking for seokmin im pretty sure he’s fucking a girl.” he says casually smiling at you. “oh thanks. when you see him will you tell him i walked home?”
“wait ur leaving? how come its only 10:30.” he says looking confused. “i just am not feeling great actually. so ill be leaving now bye soonyoung!” you wave quickly before walking out of juns house. starting your drunk journey home. it was a long but much needed walk. you have cried the whole way home.
how am i sitting here drunk still think about him. he is fucking sober and im not in a single thought in his mind. you think to yourself using your keys to open your front door. quickly heading to the bathroom for a much needed bath. locking the bathroom door behind you.
it is has been 20 mins of you sitting in your bath tub listening to your music quietly. still slightly drunk. you have decided you were in the bathroom long enough. just wanting to sleep. quickly getting ready for bed. “i really hope seokmin doesn’t come home all loud.” you think out loud before climbing in your bed at instantly falling asleep.
you wake up feeling like absolute shit. only remembering seeing minghao with those girls. its all thats been on your mind. he is all that is ever on your mind. you really wish he wasn’t. all you can do is sit and think about him with others. he wasn’t even drunk. he just doesn’t care. it is too early for you to be crying over this. you sigh getting out of bed to brush your teeth shortly after heading to the kitchen for water. immediately heading back to your room not even looking for seokmin.
your phone vibrating when you get back into your room.
seok💖- hey u ok? soonyoung said you went home early. i stayed over here over night. ill be home in a few ok<3
you- yup im great. and its fine no rush
you turn off your phone crawling into your bed immediately falling back asleep for a couple more hours. waking up slightly hearing the front door open downstairs. getting up to see him. “seok??” “yea its me.” you hear him come into your room beating you on your way out. “hi missed you.” you say giving him a hug. “i missed you too. you okay? you seem off.” he says taking in your exhausted appearance. “just didn’t have much fun last night.” you try to lie to him but you know he will get you to tell him anyways so might as well tell him whats wrong. “you sure?” he says moving some hair out of your face. “u-uh actually its minghao.” his expressions shifts to a more serious one. “what the fuck did he do this time? im gonna kill him.” he says sitting both of you onto your bed. “he didn’t necessarily do anything. im just fucking in love with him and he doesn’t even bat an eye at me. when i went to get some air he followed me out and talked to me for a bit and i told him that he should go back to drinking and kissing whatever girl he was kissing. he walked off and then i saw him with another girl when i was looking for you.” he sighs “y/n im so sorry you had to watch him with two girls i know that must’ve hurt. is there anything i can do to make you feel better?” he rubs your shoulder kissing your forehead sweetly. “no no its ok seok im just glad you’re here.” you smile at him “but enough about me!!! soonyoung said you were with a girl last night um hello tell me the details!!!” you say pushing him playfully.
“shes in my theater class. her name is iya and i think im gonna ask her to be my girlfriend. last night was actually crazy. i have never had my dick sucked so good.” he laughs
“okay first of all! cute i like iya shes nice and let me help you plan a way to ask her!!! last part was not needed but thanks for teling me.” you laugh with him. “i really like her. she slept over with me but i had to leave early to check in on you.” you scoff. “seok what the fuck why would u leave her for me rn you know im just fine rotting in my room. you better go back and hangout with her or i will kill you.” you say pulling him from your bed pushing him out of your room. “okay okay fine! you sure you’ll be ok here all alone?” you nod quickly pushing him more. “go go!” he laughs walking downstairs waving before leaving the house again. you smile walking back to your room turning on a show to pass the time.
you were so invested in love island that you didn’t even realize minghao has sent you a text. which is weird because he never texts you or talks to you at all.
minghao- hey are you home?
you- um yes why?
minghao- can i come over?
you are panicking. why would minghao want to come over? you swear if he wants another quick fuck then to blow you off again you’re not having it.
you- look im not in the mood for sex right now especially not with you.
minghao- uh ok. i was asking because i wanted to talk to you about something. if you don’t feel like it thats ok
what could he possibly want to talk to you about?
you- what do you want to talk about? why can’t we just do it over text?
minghao- i would rather tell you in person. just let me come over i won’t stay too long.
you- okay but don’t judge me im not getting ready for you.
minghao- ok thats fine. i bet you still look cute.
what the fuck? you thought to yourself. y/n this isn’t real. you have to be seeing things because this is the most minghao has ever said to you since you fucked him. you’re beyond confused and scared to see what he has to say to you.
some time passes with you nervously waiting upon his arrival. you hear a slight knock on the door immediately running to open the door. “hello.” you say letting him walk in. “hi.” he laughs at you and sits on the couch waiting for you to join.
sitting beside him on the couch. “so uh what did you want to talk to me about?” you shift nervously fulling looking at minghao. “this is gonna be kinda a lot.” he says sighing “y/n i think im in love with you. i think i have been since we had sex. i have been thinking about you everyday and seeing you with seokmin all the time. fuck it drives me crazy. i have never caught feelings for anyone like this before y/n. you are all my thoughts consume of.” he looks at you waiting for you to say something, anything. “minghao i’m in love with you too. i know i am but im sorry i cant stop thinking about how you probably fucked those girls you were with last night and the fact that you were sober it just doesn’t sit right with me.”
he sighs “y/n i wasn’t sober. i was drunk. i dont fucking know why i said that to you. i just wanted to make you jealous but when i saw you didn’t care i just said fuck it and went with that girl. but she will never be you. none of them will. i swear it didn’t mean a single thing.” he is holding your hands now.
“you told me you weren’t drinking and i believed you.” you say kinda laughing at yourself. “i don’t know how i clearly was drunk. but i swear i only want you okay? i want to be with you i don’t want to be with a different girl or guy every night okay? i want to be with you every night. i want to wake up and see you. i want you.” he says pulling you into a kiss. you kiss him back feeling him pull you onto his lap. moaning into his lips slowly grinding down onto him. “fuck im hard do you want to go to your room?” he asks marking you with hickeys as he talks. you shake your head no. “mm cant wait just fuck me here.” you say pulling off your shirt. him copying your movements to remove his shirt as well. “shit okay.” he groans at the feeling of you still grinding on his cock. “baby let me finger you so you won’t be so tight for me.” he says tugging your shorts down your legs. moving you so your back his against his chest slowly moving his hands down your thighs. “please hao.” he moves your panties to the side sliding his fingers over your folds slowly. “hao huh? i like that nickname. baby you’re fucking soaking through your panties.” you nod grinding down onto his fingers. he pushes a finger into you quickly pumping it in and out of you. the noise of your wetness, moans, and his grunts being the only things heard. “hao im ready! please fuck me i can’t wait i n-need it.” now fucking yourself onto his finger. “yea baby? you sure? don’t want to hurt you..” you nod quickly grinding harder onto his finger.
“ you sure my love?” he asks you again pulling his finger out and bringing it to his mouth. “y-yes please!.” he kisses your cheek. “you taste so fucking good love. you’re so good for me. let me give you what you want.” he shifts from under you. “ass up face down baby.” he states you quickly complying. “condom baby?” you shake your head. “just fucking put it in minghao!” hes taken aback “shit you sure? are you on the pill?.” you nod your head looking back at him slightly wiggling your ass towards him. watching his pull his pants and underwear down letting his dick free lining up with you.
he pushes inside you without warning groaning out. “hao! fuck you’re so fucking big.” you start to fuck yourself back onto his dick. he pulls your back up against his chest. and starts to fuck you deep. you’re immediately gone in the feeling all thoughts leaving you feeling how deep he is. “most perfect pussy huh darling?” he groans kissing down your neck. no words are even thought at this moment. you hope he isn’t expecting you to talk because you actually can’t. “hmm my baby can’t form any words am i fucking you too good?” he says teasingly fucking you rougher. still no response. minghao doesn’t mind tho he just continues his movements moaning into your ear. “h-hao im coming!” you say clenching against him. “cum for me pretty.” he said coming immediately with you following after him. he doesn’t stop his deeps thrusts are more shallow and rough now. “t-too much minghao.” you voice yourself to say causing him to hum slowly pulling out of you. “m’sorry baby. i got kinda carried away it felt so good.” he says before pulling you to kiss him. suddenly the front door is opening to reveal a shocked seokmin. “um what the fuck.” he says covering his eyes. “SEOKMIN OH MY GOD.” you quickly pull your shorts on and grab minghaos shirt sliding it on. “you’re home so..soon.” minghao is laughing at you putting his pants back on. “yes but why is he here.” he says not looking minghaos way at all. “he came and talked to me and confessed.” you smile at seokmin. “and we’re dating now.“ minghao says pulling you into a hug. “we are?” “if you would like that.” seokmin just witnessing the whole thing. “okay okay whatever but if you hurt her again i will actually fucking cut off your dick off and feed it to you.” seokmin says while smiling at minghao. you just laughing rolling your eyes at your best friends remarks. “i promise.” minghao says pulling you into a kiss.

drunk on halloween
a/n: felt like writing a halloween themed fic as halloween was coming up! and i noticed a lack of wallows fics on here!!! so i thought id write one for braeden :)
happy halloween to those who celebrate <3
pairing: braeden x reader
summary: you hadn’t been to many social gatherings since your break up quite a few months ago, braeden thinks going to a halloween party with a small amount of drinking may do you some good. although, that may come with an unexpected confession.
warnings: drinking alcohol, reader feeling negative about herself
word count: 2.4k
✩ ✩ ✩
Halloween.
Usually you’d be the first person to be wanting to go out and buy a costume to go to a gathering or party with your friends.
You loved halloween. It’s the time of year you get to dress up however you want, in whatever costume you want, and you always found that thrilling.
The past couple of years, you would match costumes with your boyfriend, go to some stupid party and most likely get laughed at by his friends. It wasn’t all that fun for you now that you think back to it.
This year would be very different. You and your boyfriend broke up back at the start of the year. Which meant, no matching costume, no shitty halloween party.
Instead, you would get to spend the day with your friends. Especially, your longtime friend, Braeden. You’d turned down his halloween plans since being with your boyfriend, which was mostly his doing, so this year would be a breath of fresh air.
In your opinion, Braeden had stayed friends with you for longer than he should’ve. For reasons out of your control, you didn’t talk to him as much, you skipped plans, you practically avoided him. All because of your ex.
Braeden repeatedly told you that it wasn’t your fault. That he knew what was going on, that he wasn’t mad at you over it whatsoever.
He could never be mad at you, he cared about you way too much for that.
Since your break up, Braeden had been with you almost every day. He’d be at your apartment, cooking you food, watching movies with you, letting you borrow his clothes, sleeping over with you more than being in his own house.
You hadn’t been out much since everything happened, so Braeden put in extra effort to get you to have a good time. He took you out to eat, took you to your favourite ice cream spot, everything a boyfriend would do.
He was the perfect guy. And maybe he’d wished you’d seen that sooner.
Now, you were sat on Braeden’s bed. Legs comfortably crossed in front of you as you waited for him to change into his costume in the bathroom.
He’d told you about the halloween party Dylan would be throwing at his place, suggesting that it might be a nice time for you to see friends and relax for the night.
It didn’t take long for him to walk into the room, standing with his arms out for you to see the full outfit.
“So, you’re meant to be a… magician?” You asked, the black pants, white shirt, cape and hat made that obvious.
“And I have the props to go with it,” he enthusiastically held out a deck of cards and a magic wand. “Maybe I can magic a rabbit out of my hat.”
“You have a rabbit?”
He had an odd expression on his face. An almost unreadable one. He went to his drawers, pulling out a headband… with bunny ears on it. He raised his eyebrows.
You realised at that moment why Braeden had suggested for you to wear your most hated white dress to this halloween party. You’d even put on a hoodie over it because you hated it so badly.
“You’re not serious,” you folded your arms. “You really want me to be the bunny?”
“I just thought i’d might be nice to have a matching outfit,” he defended himself.
“But, I only used to do matching outfits with—
You sighed, running your hands through your hair. Braeden, put the headband down on his cabinet, slowly sitting down next to you.
“I thought us doing a matching outfit could take your mind off of it,” he explained. “Give you some new happy memories for halloween.”
“I know, I’m sorry,” you looked at him, seeing the sorrowful look on his face. “I know you’re doing this for me, it’s just that it’s the first halloween since everything happened.”
“And I probably should’ve asked about these outfits before calling you over here,” he truly did feel bad. He didn’t want to make you do this if you didn’t want to. “I’ll take you home so you can wear something you want to wear.”
You contemplated for a moment. Looking at this thought out costume that Braeden was wearing. You didn’t want to ruin something else for him.
He did this for you, he wanted to try and make you happy, make you forget about your ex. Another example of how much he cared, that he was willing to take you home now if you really didn’t want to do this.
“Give me the bunny ears,” you held your hand out.
“You’ll do it?”
“I’ll do it.”
He abruptly stood, grabbing the bunny ears to give them to you. You stood up too, standing in front of his mirror to place them atop your head.
The ears looked ridiculously large on you. Either way, you turned around to show Braeden who was waiting patiently behind you to see. He let out a quiet laugh, coughing to cover it up after.
“Don’t laugh!” You folded your arms over your stomach. “You’re the one who wanted me to do this.”
“No, no, you look great,” He straightened up the ears on your head, staying close to you afterwards.
You looked up at him, the sweet expression on his face, the way he was looking at you. There was meaning in that look, there must’ve been.
“Um, we should probably get going,” he stepped away, finding his phone to check the time. “I have a pair of white gloves for you too, where did I put them?”
He rummaged through his drawer, finding them after a few moments. He handed them to you, watching as you slipped them on.
“Okay, I’m ready,” you smiled, Braeden raised an eyebrow. “What?”
“Your hoodie.”
“What about it?”
“Aren’t you gonna take it off?” He asked. “For your dress.”
“Oh, uh, totally.”
You hesitated for a moment, taking your bunny ears off before slowly pulling the sleeves over your hands to go to take it off, but you stopped. Your dress was thin, slightly clingy. Did you have to do this?
“I always think you look beautiful in your dresses,” Braeden leaned against his wardrobe, noticing the unsure look on your face.
“it’s just—“ you closed your eyes, shaking your head. “It makes me look—“
“Pretty?” He spoke over you. “Gorgeous?”
“Come on, stop,” you chuckled.
He raised his hands in defence, looking away as you eventually pulled your hoodie over your head, placing it on Braeden’s bed before turning around.
He went to speak, no words coming out. He’d underestimated how much he’d missed getting to hang out with you, getting to do things like this with you. With his best friend. Perhaps the person he saw more as a friend.
“You look beautiful,” he smiled softly. You rolled your eyes. “I’m serious, we look good together, huh?”
Together.
You looked down at your dress, over to his magician costume, “we match well,” you finally agreed. “Good job thinking of this.”
You both discussed final arrangements for Dylan’s party, making your way over to his house soon after.
It didn’t take long to get there, Dylan greeting you at the door in his priest costume before grabbing drinks for you both to have for the start of the night.
You passed Cole in his pumpkin outfit on the way to the living room, enjoying himself as much as everyone else here.
Braeden knew you had a tendency to drink to forget about your problems, so he was making sure to watch you didn’t over do it, not wanting you to end up feeling sick.
It was hard for you to admit to yourself, but you had been having a good time here so far. For the first time in two years, you were having fun on halloween. Without your boyfriend, without his stupid friends that you never knew.
You were having fun with Braeden, your best friend who you suddenly felt the need to be overly thankful to. Perhaps the alcohol in your system taking effect after being half way through your second drink.
“You know,” you gained Braeden’s attention, sitting on the sofa in the living room. “You really didn’t have to do all this matchy outfit thing for me just to try and make me happy.”
“You know,” he mocked jokingly. “I’d do anything for you if it means you’re happy.”
“Well, I am, I’m very happy,” you shuffled closer to him. “I don’t know what I did to deserve a friend like you, or to keep you around.”
He sighed, glancing to your cup to see it was almost empty. You did tend to get emotional when you’re drunk, so that’s what this must be.
“I was always gonna stay around,” he leaned forwards, placing his cup on the small table. “I wasn’t about to lose you over some shitty guy.”
“He was shitty, wasn’t he?” You laughed with a shake of your head. “You’re not shitty though, you’ve never been shitty.”
“I try my best,” Braeden laughed with you.
As he sat back, you leaned that small bit closer, laying your head on his shoulder. You decided you liked him this close, feeling his arm go around your shoulders.
He noticed you fiddling with the top of your plastic cup, something you usually did if you had something on your mind. He took a deep breath, trying to slow his racing heart with you being so close.
From beside him, Dylan walked past, knocking his shoulder gently with a raise of his eyebrows. He knew how Braeden felt about you, so did Cole who was looking from the other side of the room.
“Why are they looking at us like that?” You asked, causing Braeden to abruptly look down at you.
You looked up at him, now realizing the close proximity you were in. Neither of you moved. It’s as if everything around you froze. Had his eyes always been this dreamy?
“Is it hot in here?” He suddenly questioned.
“what?”
“We should um, go and get some air,” he turned away. Glaring at his two friends as he stood up.
You didn’t know what was going on, but you followed his lead, stumbling slightly as you stood up, maybe you did drink a little too much.
Braeden immediately reached for your hand, steadying you before going any further.
“You okay?” He double checked.
You looked down at your hand in his, suddenly feeling your heart racing. This hadn’t happened before. What was going on?
“Drunk on halloween, how cliche,” you chuckled, forcing yourself to look up at him.
He shook his head at you, starting to lead you away from the living room, his hand keeping hold of yours.
You went to the back of the house, leaving through the back door. It was quiet in the backyard, peaceful, away from all the music and drinking.
You both sat down on the patio chair, now letting go of Braeden’s hand. It was a clear night, the bright stars glowing in the sky above you. Tonight was a perfect night.
Sitting in the quiet was definitely needed. Letting your mind settle, although, the only thing you could think about was all the moments you’d had with Braeden today.
The way he looked at you in his house when he adjusted your bunny ears, him calling you beautiful, his arm around you inside, the way he looked at you then, him holding your hand.
You were close to Braeden. He was your best friend. But things had felt different tonight.
Without thinking, your hand had started to edge closer to his. Pinky’s touching, linking yours with his as a little gentle touch. He didn’t move his hand away, didn’t ask what was going on.
Friends don’t act like this. do they?
“Thank you for getting me to come to this party,” you broke the silence. “It’s been nice spending this time with you again.”
“I’ve missed it,” he admitted. “It’s been a while since we’ve been together to have a good time, rather than you being upset.”
“yea, together.”
You took a long breath in, shuffling to look at Braeden beside you. He turned too, not knowing why you were looking at him the way you were.
You reached up, taking his hat off of his head to run your hand through his fluffy brown hair. The only look in his eyes was adoration, he couldn’t help but smile.
“I don’t know why I ever thought he was a good guy,” you said referring to your ex. “When I’ve had you the whole time.”
Braeden furrowed his eyebrows, he didn’t understand where you were going with this.
“I don’t know why I didn’t see it before,” you cupped his cheek in your gloved hand. “I think it’s been you for longer than I realized before.”
“Stop,” he moved away slightly. “You’re drunk.”
“I’m not saying this just because I’ve been drinking, Brae,” you defended. “No one’s ever cared about me the way you do, you’re always here, no matter what.”
He knew you were serious after calling him by that nickname. He sighed, relaxing into your touch as you continued on. You felt ever so closer to him now, the closest you’re sure you’d ever been to him.
Close enough to notice his quick glance down to your lips.
“I pushed you away, when I should’ve been honest with you, with myself, from the start.”
Now it was Braeden’s turn. He brushed his thumb delicately across your cheek before tucking your hair behind your ears.
“I guess my whole plan for tonight was to give you some happier halloween memories,” he holds your chin between his thumb and finger. “Can I kiss you?”
You don’t know what you’d expected, but it wasn’t for him to say that. Judging by his initial reaction, you were expecting him to move away completely.
“I thought you would’ve noticed the signs earlier on,” he leaned in closer. “Maybe now’s finally the right time.”
Without another word, he moved forwards. His lips connecting to yours in a soft kiss. He slowly pulled away after, waiting to see your reaction.
You had the most lovestruck smile on your face. A blush rising on your cheeks before you quickly cuddled up to Braeden.
This Halloween had been perfect. And now you knew that he’s all you needed and more.

did you think about me if I ever were to find out?

Sydney's costume makes you want to melt.
She had somehow convinced you that you should both go as Snoopy and Woodstock. Marcus had planned a work Halloween party at his place to double as a housewarming party. So Sydney insisted you both go, you being front of house and her being back of house it only made sense.
So, here she is. Her braids collected in two pigtails, wrapped in place with black bows to mimic Snoopy's ears. The white dress she has on is a bit shorter than you know she's usually comfortable with, but you can see the lace shorts peaking out under the hem of her dress.
Your costume is... A lot of yellow. Ruffled shorts and short sleeve Henley that you thrifted the week before making the costume come together. Sydney tried to convince you to adopt a yellow hair accessorie, but you could not bring yourself to wear anymore yellow. The only thing you could get away with was a pair of black boots, insisting to Sydney that the shoes didn't matter with all the yellow you were already wearing.
You told Sydney you would pick her up from her place, and you would both go to Marcus's together. However, you were not prepared for how she would greet you, all dressed up in her costume.
So here you are, shocked by the sight of her all dressed up.
"What? Does it not look good? Should I change?" Sydney starts her anxious interrogation upon seeing your expression.
"No, no. Sorry! You look fine. Look good, actually." You assure her.
"Okay.. You sure? Cause like.. I can change-" Sydney starts.
"No, no, promise, Syd," you assure her. You place your hand on her forearm to further comfort her, rubbing your thumb over her soft skin. Sydney nods, adjusting her bag on her shoulder.
"Come on, Marcus'll be upset if we're late.." She says, tugging the door closed behind her. You agree, linking your arm with hers.
Snoopy and Woodstock.. Arm in arm.
You have had too much to drink already. You know it, Sydney knows it. The whole staff probably knows it. But you feel good so you don't particularly care.
You do start to care when you notice Sydney floating around you more, staying close to you in case you need the extra support. She's watching to you dance obnoxiously with Richie, singing loudly at the top of your lungs.
"Okay, okay, that's enough.." Sydney intervenes when you stumble into Richie for the third time. She slides her arm around your back, bringing your own to rest over her shoulder.
"Can you let Marcus know we're gonna be in his guest room?" Sydney tells Richie softly before leading you away from the crowd. You're perfectly content to follow Sydney wherever she leads you, so long as it's by her side.
You don't notice when she gets you into the room, playing with the strap on her shoulder to keep your attention. You do notice when she plops you down on the bed, laying you back and lifting your legs so yours laying down.
You listen softly as she takes off her shoes before laying on the bed next to you. You both lay there in silence for what feels like hours. Until eventually-
"Y'look so pretty tonight.." You whisper. "Look pretty all the time but..."
You trail off as you stare at the ceiling. Sydney turns onto her side to face you, but you can't bring yourself to turn over yet.
"You look pretty tonight.." Sydney whispers softly. Her words make you roll onto your side, finally taking her in. You watch silently as she brings her hand up to rest against your cheek, leaning into the warmth of her skin.
You're not sure who moves first, but it doesn't matter when she's kissing you like this.
It is soft and sweet, mixed with the apple cider she'd been nursing all night, and her plum chapstick. Between the apple cider and blood orange screwdriver you had, together the kiss tastes addictive.
Sydney doesn't let you make it any more than a soft kiss between the two of you. At some point in your kiss drunk state, you brought both your hands up to hold her face, keeping her close to you.
When you pull away from her, you can't help but stare. She's flustered. You can see it in her eyes. She looks more shy, not quite meeting your own gaze. It makes you smile softly.
"You're so pretty when you're flustered," you giggle softly. Sydney flusters even more, trying to hide her face in your hands while she mutters.
"Shut up.."

Almost
I actually had a lot of fun writing this. Especially after all the drunk Nancy I got to write. It felt like it was time for some drunk Robin. Also I would like to note that I still, to this day, have never been drunk so any and all inaccuracies of drunk people are probably because of that. And I do apologize. Someone should get me drunk some time.
You can read my previous prompts here or if you'd like, you can send me prompts.
Nancy shouldn’t have been at this party. She didn’t want to be at this party. But Robin had sounded so excited about their first college adventure and Nancy didn’t have it in her to say no. It was starting to become an issue.
Robin, for her part, had spent the night dancing and drinking. At least she was having fun. It was just a pity that she was having fun with her arms hung loosely over another drunk girl’s shoulders.
Perhaps Nancy should start drinking too. Perhaps it would erase the heavy feeling in her chest.
“Nancy!” Robin shouted as she ran up to her.
Nancy looked into her cup with a smile. The water greeted her back as she placed the plastic against her lips.
“Nancy! There you are, I thought I lost you.” Robin pouted as she spoke, her lips nearly trembling and Nancy wanted to pull the girl into her arms and never let go.
“I’m right here,” she replied instead. Maybe if she had a few cups to drink she’d run her mouth like she did at that Halloween party many moons ago. But that was exactly why she wasn’t drinking. She didn’t want to say something she’d regret, something she wouldn’t be able to take back.
“Come get another drink with me.” Robin was already slurring her words, nearly losing her balance as she pulled at Nancy’s sleeve.
“I think it might be better to take you home.”
“I don’t want to go home yet. Don’t make me go home yet.”
“Well, I’m going home,” Nancy declared with a finality she couldn’t explain. “And I don’t want to leave you here.”
Robin frowned, contemplating her options, before nodding. “Okay. I’ll go with you.”
It was almost too easy to lose herself in how Robin caved instantly. Nancy had to bite the inside of her cheek to keep herself from grinning as she dragged Robin to the front door. The cool air did little to sober Robin up. All it did was cause Robin to lean into Nancy’s side making it all that much harder to walk. But Nancy didn’t protest. Nancy wallowed in the way Robin’s fingers felt against her arm and the way she would lean in to whisper hiccuped comments in Nancy’s ear.
“And then she said ‘maybe’, what do you think that means, Nance?”
“I think it means maybe.” Nancy tried to reach for her keys but Robin’s body was blocking her purse. Her annoyance at the direction the conversation had taken didn’t help in the slightest. She didn’t like hearing Robin talk about other girls. It was the only topic she didn’t want to hear about. It was the only time she wanted Robin to shut up.
“But good maybe or bad maybe?”
“Robin,” Nancy sighed, the slightest hints of irritation creeping into her voice.
“Sorry.” Robin took a step back, nearly falling on her ass. Nancy quickly grabbed her arm to keep her upright. They were nearly pressed together, Nancy making sure Robin didn’t topple over and Robin leaning into the touch.
“I’m gonna open the door now,” Nancy declared, eyes still locked on her friend. Robin nodded, her eyes glazed over. For a second longer they stayed frozen in place. And then Nancy finally reached into her purse to pull out the keys to their shared apartment. A two bedroom cozy place financed by Ted Wheeler who had grumbled when Nancy asked. It was slightly off campus but close enough for them to sleep in on most days.
They stumbled in. The rooms dark, only lit by the slight bit of moonlight filtering in through the windows.
“C’mon.” Nancy pulled Robin towards the bedrooms. It wasn’t as easy as she had hoped to convince Robin to get changed and crawl into bed but Nancy succeeded, like she always did. Because at the end of the day there was no room for failures. And also because Robin would do pretty much anything Nancy asked of her if she only… insisted.
Robin looked adorable, half covered by her blanket. Nancy wanted to crawl into bed with her. But Nancy had her own bedroom, own bed and it wouldn’t be beneficial to either of them if Nancy forgot that.
“Are we all set? Ready to go to sleep?” Nancy asked. She hadn’t meant to sound like her mother. But she had.
Robin nodded.
“Perfect. Good night, Robin. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Nancy turned around to leave. She should’ve. But then Robin tugged at her sleeve and Nancy turned back.
“Please stay.” Robin was pouting.
“Robin, I should go.”
“Nancy, please stay.”
And what was Nancy going to do? She couldn’t say no to Robin’s pouting face. Just like Robin could never say no to her. So, Nancy crawled into bed, next to Robin, and tried to not notice the heat radiating from the girl’s body. She didn’t want to think about how close her hand lay to Robin’s. She could touch it, if she wanted to. She was already almost touching it. Almost, almost, almost. The word seemed to pop up quite a bit too often when it came to Robin. Almost touching, almost telling, almost getting everything she wanted but what she didn’t deserve.
“Are you still awake?” Robin’s voice broke through the thoughts.
“Yes, I’m awake.” Almost knowing what she should do.
“I’m thinking.”
Nancy laughed softly, muffled by her own thoughts. “It’s overrated.”
“Maybe I don’t care what that girl thinks. I think I’ve been trying to force something that’s not real because I’m scared that if I admit that I’m in love with you, you'll leave me. And I’ve wanted to tell you so many times but each time I just think, what if you hate me for what I feel. It’s not like I can help it. I don’t know. Maybe it’s all just bullshit. I think I might be drunk.”
Nancy listened as Robin turned away from her. She listened as Robin’s breathing evened out. And maybe she almost knew what she should’ve said but Robin was already asleep and Nancy’s mind was reeling.

PROJECT SUNSHINE CHAPTER TWENTY THREE → A CODE RED (SERIOUSLY! A CODE RED!)
summary: steve harrington x oc
when another product of Hawkins National Laboratory escaped a long-survived nightmare alongside her sister, she crashed into one unsuspecting teenage boy and dragged him deeper into the dark mysteries that made up their hometown.
word count. 3.8k || masterlist
warnings: cannon typical violence, child abuse, horror, gore, and depictions of mental illness. parts of this story were written pre-season 4 release. cannon divergence.
previous chapter ← → next chapter
Steve had concluded that he had a bad habit of pretending that everything was okay when they were not, and because of that, he found himself walking through the streets of Hawkins to clear his head.
Normally, after school, he and Nancy met Sunshine at the library, but Nancy was nowhere to be found and she wasn’t speaking to Steve. According to Tommy H., who Steve begrudgingly spoke to in the locker room after gym class, Nancy ran off with Jonathan. He tried not to think too much about that, and he hoped that Tommy H. was just screwing with him.
Steve had no idea where his relationship with Nancy stood. She couldn’t tell him he loved him when they spoke briefly the morning after Tina’s Halloween party. That stung worse than he cared to admit, but they did not explicitly break things off, and he planned to apologize later that evening in an attempt to win her back. Then, they could put everything behind them, and try to move on from the events last year, together.
Despite Nancy not joining him, Steve still made his way up the front steps of the library and spotted Sunshine at their usual table. She wasn’t alone, though. Seated on either side of her were Calum and Tamera.
“Hey,” Steve greeted them as he dropped his backpack onto the floor beside his chair. “Sorry I’m late.” His walk and sulking went a little longer than he intended, but he had a lot on his mind.
Calum nodded at Steve and said, “Hey, Harrington.”
As Steve took his seat, he met Sunshine’s eye and knew the next words out of her mouth before she even uttered them.
“No Nancy?” Sunshine asked.
With a sigh, Steve replied, “Not today.” He didn’t elaborate, mostly because he wasn’t confident he would do so without slipping back into wallowing in his self-pity.
“Rumor has it you two broke it off,” Calum said, too casually as popped a piece of gum into his mouth and leaned back in his seat. Tamera slapped Calum’s arm and shot him a sharp glare.
Of course, there were already rumors swirling around about Steve and Nancy since their pretty public argument at the party, but luckily no one heard the second half of their argument which included the death of Barb and the fact that drunk Nancy didn’t love him. All they saw was the spill of punch across Nancy’s sweater and the two of them fleeing to the bathroom.
Yet, that was enough for people to speculate what happened between the two of them.
Steve changed the subject, not wanting to disclose his dwindling love life with two people he hardly knew and Sunshine.
“What are you guys working on?” He peered at Sunshine’s notebook, which was covered in notes with her messy handwriting.
“History,” she replied.
Tamera cleared her throat and shifted her eyes between the people at the table. “Yeah, we are just about done. We'll leave-"
“No,” Steve said, with a wave of his hand. “You guys don’t have to leave just because I’m here.”
He knew he wasn’t innocent when it came to mocking or pushing around kids like Calum and Tamera, and they had every reason not to want to hang around him. He also knew that Tommy H. and his new group of assholes had only upped their asshole-ery, and he was pretty sure Calum and Tamera weren’t excluded from their wrath. He could at least try to show them he wasn’t the same person he was last year and try not to ruin Sunshine’s chance of making friends.
Calum eyed Steve for a moment before he slowly nodded. “Yeah, Mara, relax, we’re all friends here. I mean, it’s been a couple of years since Harrington’s shoved me in a locker.” Sarcasm dripped from Calum’s tone, and it caused Steve to cringe.
“Knock it off,” Tamera hissed at Calum, which only caused him to flash a smile.
Steve sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah, I was a little bit of an asshole back then.” He tried to joke, but it was the truth. He was still a little bit of an asshole, but at least he wasn’t hanging around the same crowd anymore. Steve was trying.
Scoffing, Tamera muttered, “A little?” under her breath but Steve heard her.
“Majorly,” he corrected himself. “I was a major asshole. But I am sorry.” Shifting uncomfortably in his seat, he desperately hoped someone would shift the direction of their conversation before the air grew more tense or he fled the library. He was genuinely sorry, but it felt weird to apologize. He didn’t even remember shoving Calum into a locker or talking to either one of them. Even if he hadn’t, his association with Tommy and that crowd was enough for them to lump Steve into every horrible thing they’d said or done and pin some of the blame on him.
Tamera did not seem to fully believe his word, but she did stop packing up her things and rested back in her seat.
“You’re full of surprises, Harrington,” said Calum.
“So you are, Miller,” Steve said. “Ellie said you punched some kid at the Halloween party.”
The stocky blonde didn’t strike Steve as a fighter. He sat with his shoulders slumped and a shorter stature than most boys in his grade. Yet, there was a certain glimmer of something calculating in his blue eyes.
Tamera crossed her arms over her chest as she said, “Yeah, he broke your friend Tommy H.’s nose.”
“Oh no, we don’t talk much anymore.” Steve shook his head as the memories of their fight last year flashed in his head. “We haven’t talked, actually, since last year.” Besides the jabs Tommy tossed Steve’s way when they crossed paths in the hallways of the school, at basketball practice, or in the locker room. Steve hardly acknowledged his old friend.
Curiously, Calum leaned in toward the table at Steve’s words. “What happened last year?”
Out of habit, Steve looked at Sunshine, who was intently listening to their conversation. At the mention of last year, her golden eyes widened just slightly, and she managed to say, “It’s a long story.”
“Right,” Steve agreed quickly, probably a little too quickly.
Tamera hummed in response and picked at the cracked nail polish on her fingers. “Well, now Tommy’s in the pocket of the new kid, Billy, who, I’ve heard is somehow an even bigger asshole,” she sighed and flickered her gaze toward Sunshine. Her brows furrowed and she frowned. “Cal’s punch didn’t do much. Tommy, Billy, and all their friends are running their mouths. Now they’re telling everyone that you’ve been locked up at Pennhurst for the last ten years, and people are stupid enough to believe them.”
It took everything in Steve not to roll his eyes. Of course people believed some made-up story Tommy and his friend were spewing. It just didn’t make sense that, out of all of the people in Hawkins, they felt the need to involve Sunshine like she hadn’t been through enough. She didn’t even go to school with them; rumors had less effect if that person isn’t miserably moping around Hawkins High for them to laugh at.
“I don’t even know what that means!” Sunshine groaned, running her hands down the length of her face.
Gently, Tamera explained, “It’s an asylum, which is kind of like a hospital, for people with mental issues. It’s where they get help. But some people think it’s a home for raging psychopaths or people who are completely off their rocker and are dangerous to let mingle with the general public.”
Sunshine sank further down in her seat and drummed her fingers over her sweater-covered wrist, where her tattoo was hidden.
There was a beat of silence that passed between them in which Steve and Sunshine took in Tamera’s words and felt the weight of them. Sure, Steve wasn’t directly involved with the rumors about Sunshine, but he felt partially responsible.
Calum shattered their contemplation. “So…you weren’t at Pennhurst?” He earned himself another slap from Tamera; Steve was sure the teen’s arm was going to bruise. “Ow!” Calum hissed through his teeth and rubbed the spot with his opposite hand. “I was just asking!”
“I wasn’t,” Sunshine answered.
“Well, maybe if you told people where you actually were, they’d get off your back.”
Sunshine stopped tapping her finger against the fabric pulled down around her wrist and pulled her hands into her lap. While Steve couldn’t see her hands, he had a feeling she was doing what she normally did when she was stressed and scratch her tattoo.
“Everyone already knows what happened,” she said, lying pretty convincingly. “It was in the paper.”
It suddenly struck Steve why Tommy and his old friends pushed Calum around so much back in the day, and why they probably still did. Calum liked to push people’s buttons and dig under their skin as far as he could before they retaliated.
“All the paper said was some bullshit article that the chief wrote. It hardly explained anything, just that you magically appeared back in Hawkins.”
Steve stepped in, narrowing his eyes at the blonde who tried to get a piece of truth that he, in no way, was able to handle. “What’s your point?” Steve asked.
“My point is that it leaves a lot up to interpretation and to the imagination. If you told people like Tommy what really went down those ten years you were gone, and maybe even who you were with, it would get people off your back.”
Sunshine’s shoulders tensed and she struggled to keep her expression blank. “No,” she said.
“Why not?” Calum pressed.
“Because it’s none of their business, and it’s none of yours,” Steve butted in.
The calm, peaceful air of the library slowly rose around their table and tension pulled between the group. Too many secrets sat at the tip of Steve and Sunshine’s tongues that they couldn’t let slip.
Yet, Calum ignored the shift in tone and refused to back down. He wanted to know something, but Steve knew the blond had no idea what he was asking them to admit.
“Why is it yours? I mean, out of everyone, why are you, Steve Harrington involved with…whatever this is?” Calum’s gaze was challenging as it flickered between Steve and Sunshine, waiting.
“That’s enough, Cal,” said Tamera. She placed a hand on her friend’s shoulder before she started to shove her belongings into her backpack.
Steve nodded his head. “Yeah, I think we’re done here.”
Standing up from the table, Calum fixed his gaze on Sunshine and said, “All I’m saying is, people around here don’t like secrets. Sooner or later, they’ll figure it out.”
Steve and Sunshine stayed quiet, watching as Tamera pulled Calum away from the table and out of the library until they were left alone.
Once the coast was clear, Steve sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “Jesus,” he muttered under his breath. “What is their problem?”
Across the table, Sunshine did not look upset by what just happened, but rather her face was pinched in concern.
“They’re trying to get to the bottom of what happened last year with Will and me coming back,” she answered, much to Steve’s surprise.
“How do you know that?”
“They left the table for a minute and Calum left his notebook. I just wanted to borrow a piece of paper, but when I flipped the page, he had lists of people…of us, all of us. I couldn’t read all of it, but they’re trying to piece something together about that last year.” Sunshine tucked a strand of her cropped hair behind her ear and was quiet for a beat. “What if they figure something out that they shouldn’t?”
Steve gasped. “You were snooping?” he teased, and she smiled. “I wouldn’t worry about them. I don’t think anyone could piece together whatever the hell happened last year. Not the private investigator the Hollands hired, and not some teenagers with too much time on their hands.”
Sunshine toyed with the pendant on her necklace and sighed, “You’re probably right, but that does mean they couldn’t figure something out. What if they start snooping around the Lab? They could seriously get hurt or in a lot of trouble.”
There was not a whole lot that Steve remembered about Sunshine, about Ellie, from their brief childhood spent together; however, he did remember that she cared a lot about others.
Last year she stuck around and help Nancy and Jonathan hunt down a monster that stole their best friend and brother. That wasn’t her responsibility, but she stayed anyway. She watched over Nancy’s little brother and his friends like they were her siblings. Hell, she even managed to drag Steve home, drunk, after the Halloween party when he was supposed to be the one looking out for him.
Sunshine cared, a lot, about everything and everyone. That included two teenagers who were trying to pry into her past and the events that transpired last year.
“We’ll keep an eye on them, okay?” Steve said. “If they do get too close to the truth or if they get into some real danger, we’ll tell Hopper. He’ll know what to do.”
Steve had no idea why Calum and Tamera were interested in what happened last year, beyond the fact that it was the strangest thing to ever happen in Hawkins. The initial shock of everything had worn off and the rumors only came from petty teenagers instead of everyone and their mothers. No one had the slightest clue as to what really happened, and it was up to their odd group of a mother, a cop, teenagers, and scarily smart middle schoolers to keep that earth-shattering secret.
Calum and Tamera did not want the full truth, Steve was pretty sure about that.
Nodding her head, Sunshine closed her notebook and relaxed back into her seat. “Okay,” she said. “You’re right, there’s no way they could piece everything together.”
Yet, Steve nor Sunshine knew the true extent of teenage boredom. Nor did they know just how unrelenting Calum Miller was. If he couldn’t shake a confession out of Sunshine, he’d find another way. He’d wriggle his way into her life through another, more complicated door if worst came worst, and in Hawkins, things always seemed to get worse.

At dinner, Sunshine dwelled on the spiral of events that began to consume her hometown once again. She felt heavier than usual but tried to push it away long enough to fool her parents into thinking she was on an upward climb.
It was growing increasingly difficult, though. No one had heard from Hopper or Joyce in a day or two. Will’s condition remained unknown too, and Mike’s answers over the walkie-talkie were short and vague. She didn’t know what was going on, but something wasn’t right; Sunshine felt a pit grow in her gut, twisting around like a dull knife.
“How was your day?” Sunshine’s father asked cheerfully. His mood was unrelenting, and it was rare to see him without his lips quirked upwards in a small smile. It made sense, Sunshine supposed. He, like most people in Hawkins, saw their town as a calm and kind place to reside. His opinion on that faltered during the time Sunshine was missing, but in less than a year he was back to the bright and positive personality he’d been before, according to Sunshine’s mother.
After swallowing a sip of water, Sunshine answered with a simple, “Good.” She ignored the pit that pulled tighter in her gut and the guilt of lying to her parents that loomed over her like an unrelenting shadow.
“Boring,” Sunshine added.
“Well, boring is not the worst thing in the world,” Mary-Jane said. “You went to the library with Steve and Nancy, right? I’m sure that wasn’t boring.”
Sunshine poked the food on her plate with her fork absentmindedly, avoiding her parents’ gazes. “Nancy didn’t come today. I met two other people there, who are in Nancy’s class, though. They helped me out until Steve came.”
Mary-Jane’s brows furrowed in concern. “Is Nancy all right? She isn’t sick, is she? I heard that there’s a nasty bug going around the high school. Ms. White’s daughter was out all last week with it.”
“No, I don’t think she’s sick.”
Nancy and Steve were not on the best terms, to Sunshine’s understanding. There wasn’t much she understood about relationships, but she knew how upset Steve was after his and Nancy’s fight on Halloween. As for Nancy, every time Sunshine had tried to talk to her, all she received was Mr or Mrs. Wheeler’s voice on the other line or in the doorway telling Sunshine Nancy wasn’t home.
“And who are these new kids?” Walter asked. “Do you know them?”
“Tamera Willow and Calum…Calum Miller, I think.”
Mary-Jane’s eyes widened, and she mumbled out a quiet, “Oh,” earning a confused look from both her daughter and husband. She wiped the surprise from her face almost as quickly as it came and shook her head. “That's nice, sweetheart.”
“Do you know them?” Sunshine asked, unsure of how to take her mother's reaction. It wasn’t like Mary-Jane was there to witness how Calum acted at the library earlier that day. Yet, her reaction told Sunshine that her mother knew something about the two.
“No,” Mary-Jane said. “No, I don’t know them personally, but my friend Kathy, from book club, is neighbors with the Millers and she says that no one has seen or heard from Mr. Miller since last fall.”
Sunshine nearly dropped the fork in her hand, but her shock was ignored as her parents continued talking.
“That’s right,” Walter hummed. “His son, the one you were just with, he has been pestering Jim down at the station. He thinks his father is missing, but Jim’s spoken to the boy’s mother, and she said Mr. Miller just up and left them with no warning.” The warm, nearly permanent smile on Walter’s lips flipped upside down as he grumbled into his water glass before he took a sip, “What a bastard.”
“I don’t know,” said Mary-Jane. “I am not one to speak ill of someone, but that woman, she’s always been…odd. I don’t know if she’s telling the full story.”
Sunshine hadn’t heard anything about Calum’s father. As far as she knew, Will and Barb were the only ones who disappeared last fall. It seemed too close to call it a coincidence but no one in their group had any connection to Calum’s father, as far as she knew.
“Do you think she’s lying?” Sunshine asked her mother.
With a sigh, Mary-Jane shrugged. “I really don’t know. The Millers have always rubbed me the wrong way, but who’s to say?”
That was all they thought on the subject, but a mess of questions swirled around Sunshine’s head. It started to make more sense why Calum was so interested in her, Will, and what went down last year. She just didn’t know how his father was connected to it, but she wanted to.
They finished up their dinner without any more mention of the Millers. After they were finished, Sunshine helped her father wash the dishes while Mary-Jane watered the plants that lined every windowsill in the living room.
Quietly they worked through a routine they created. It was simple and extra ordinary, and Sunshine relished every second of it. It wasn’t often she felt normal, even in her home. And while her mind was always racing and spinning out about every little thing that had happened or was happening, the familiarity of routine was nice.
That was, until it was broken by a crackle of static that screamed from her bag hung up beside the front door.
Her father stopped scrubbing the dishes and glanced over his shoulder. “What is that noise?” he asked.
Sunshine listened for a moment longer until she remembered she had left her walkie-talkie in her bag when she went to visit the boys at school.
She stopped drying the plates and dug the device out, unmuffling the voice that came through.
“Does anyone copy?” Dustin repeated over and over again.
“I copy,” Sunshine replied.
“Sunshine!” he shouted, sounding relieved. “Thank God. I don’t know where the hell everyone is, but no one is picking up and I’ve got a Code Red situation here. A serious Code Red situation!”
Dustin Henderson was always one more dramatics, but there was a waiver in his voice that struck Sunshine harshly. He often made everything sound like a huge, monumental deal, but his tone sounded more scared than theatrical.
“Where are you?” Sunshine asked, already slipping on her shoes and grabbing her sweater from the book.
There was a pause; Sunshine held her breath as she tucked a hat over her head.
“My house,” Dustin said. “Please hurry!”
“I’m on my way. Do not do anything until I get there.”
A Code Red was not a simple, pre-teen emergency. The party had agreed to save Code Reds for Upside Down and/or Lab-related emergencies. They hadn’t had to use their code words yet, but Sunshine felt worry take hold almost every time one of the boys spoke to her through her super-comm. She waited for the words “Code Red” to come through for nearly a year in anxious, awful anticipation for their newly cozy life to come crashing down again.
“Oh dear,” Mary-Jane said, stopping her watering. “That didn’t sound good. Is everything okay?”
Sunshine tossed her walkie back into her bag before she hung it over her shoulder. “Oh, yeah,” she lied. She chuckled lightly in an attempt to stop any worry from seeping from her parents at Dustin’s frantic call. “Middle schoolers, you know. Everything’s the end of the world. He’s fine, but I should go make sure.”
Maybe it was all of them still adjusting to their new way of life, but her parents never really questioned the fact that Sunshine was close to a group of pre-teens who she’d drop just about anything for. She was thankful they never asked too many questions, even though she could tell they wanted to. But Sunshine finally had a family, and she didn’t want to ruin it by telling them the truth. Some things were better left unsaid and untouched.
“I’ll be back in a little while.”
Sunshine’s parents bid her a quick goodbye, seemingly not too concerned about her leaving, and she took off on her bike toward Dustin’s house. She peddled down the quiet streets quickly, racing against the sun as it started to fall from the sky. Pale yellows and oranges illuminated her way toward whatever awaited her at the Henderson household.
