Best Pokémon Rival Tournament- Stats Breakdown!
This tournament has been pretty wild- easily the most popular on the blog so far, and very interesting from a stats perspective! So if you wanna know some of the nitty gritty, take a look at this post for details on how everyone did.
Otherwise, stayed tuned for more details on the Best Protagonist Tournament coming soon, and don't forget to check out some of the polls regarding the format of it.
Click the read more for the numbers!
As I said, this tournament was the most popular on the blog so far, with a much higher overall vote total- the combined number of votes was 20,353 (the previous most voted on tournament had 13,981). With a total of 28 matches, this means the average number of votes per match was 727- again, higher than any other tournament before it!
But let's now take a look at individual contestants- here's how everyone stacks up in terms of their average vote total per match.
Hop- 687 (687 votes in 1 match)
N- 669 (3344 votes across 5 matches)
Kieran- 538 (538 votes in 1 match)
Nemona- 536 (2681 votes across 5 matches)
Wally- 485 (970 votes across 2 matches)
Arven- 435 (2177 votes across 5 matches)
Marnie- 426 (1278 across 3 matches)
Blue- 355 (1774 votes across 5 matches)
Gladion- 346 (1039 across 3 matches)
Cheren- 335 (335 votes in 1 match)
Silver- 322 (967 votes across 3 matches)
Carmine- 321 (642 votes across 2 matches)
Penny- 316 (631 votes across 2 matches)
Bianca- 291 (582 votes across 2 matches)
Hugh- 270 (270 votes in 1 match)
Hau- 241 (241 votes in 1 match)
Shauna- 204 (204 votes in 1 match)
Brendan- 202 (404 votes across 2 matches)
Serena- 187 (187 votes in 1 match)
Barry- 184 (184 votes in 1 match)
Avery- 178 (355 votes across 2 matches)
May- 174 (174 votes in 1 match)
Bede- 150 (150 votes in 1 match)
Tierno- 138 (138 votes in 1 match)
Klara- 134 (134 votes in 1 match)
Trevor- 115 (115 votes in 1 match)
Calem- 110 (110 votes in 1 match)
Trace- 41 (41 votes in 1 match)
So as you can see, there's a much wider range than we're used to seeing in the average vote totals, and perhaps most surprising is how different the rankings are when you compare them to our winners, or just which contestants made it the later rounds.
Poor Trace ends up at the bottom with only 41 votes in the whole competition, but Hop has the highest average of 687- though this pales in comparison to the 3,344 total votes N got!
These rankings will be influenced by the relative popularity of the matches that each contestant got to participate in, so another way of ranking is by the average % vote share, which is as follows:
N- 68.5%
Marnie- 65.8%
Penny- 58.5%
Gladion- 58.3%
Silver- 57.5%
Arven- 56.9%
Nemona- 56.5%
Bianca- 55.8%
Carmine- 54.3%
Brendan- 49%
Blue- 48.3%
Hop- 46.9%
Avery- 45.9%
Hau- 45.8%
Kieran & Hugh- 43.8%
Wally- 41.4%
Barry- 37.3%
Shauna- 35.6%
Cheren- 33.5%
Bede- 33.3%
Serena- 32.5%
Tierno- 32.4%
Trevor- 30.3%
May- 29.5%
Klara- 25%
Calem- 18%
Trace- 6.9%
So as you can see, it's another very different set of results! N sits on top this time, but neither of our second or third place winners get into the top five! But, by looking at both lists, you can start to get an idea of the overall rankings of which rivals are more popular than others.
Less indicative of ranking, but still interesting, is the fraction of each contestant's votes out of the total across the competition. It's probably easiest to see the disparity in graph form:
Tumblr media
Finally, let's look at individual matches.
This time round we saw a first for the blog- matches with over 1,000 votes. Not just one, but 4 of them! The most voted on poll was the finals, another first for the blog, with 2,379 votes. Second place goes to Round 1: Match 4, Wally vs Hop. This close race had 1,465 votes.
On the other end of the spectrum, the least voted on match was Round 1: Match 11, Avery vs Trevor, with only 379 votes. Narrowly beating it was Round 2: Match 5, Bianca vs Brendan, with 383. These two matches were the only ones not to break 400 votes.
Individual contestants though? The person who earned the most votes in a single match was our champion, N, who got a huge 1,446 votes in the finals! On the other end though, Trace got only 41 votes in his only match, Round 1: Match 6.
The last thing to look at is margins! The closest matches came down to just a 2.6% margin, or 26 votes, in the case of Round 3: Match 1, or a 2.8% margin (20 votes) in the case of Round 4: Match 2. Not the closest matches we've ever had, but still a nail biter!
And finally, the award for the biggest sweep. While N won a 513 vote majority in the finals, for this? We're looking at the percentages. Who swept the competition like no one else? In this tournament, in was Gladion! He beat Trace by an astounding 86.2% margin, leaving the poor kid wondering what happened. This almost matched N's vote margin, with a 509 vote difference.
And that about wraps it up! Let me know if I missed anything, and I hope you found this interesting! Stick around for more match ups and stats as we head into the new tournament soon!

20 Questions for Fic Writers
How many works do you have on AO3?
oof okay it's a lot. i have two accounts, and one of them is over 10 years old so....
metukah (est 2013): 185
marirah (est 2022): 85
for a total of 270 works... oof
What’s your total A03 word count?
metukah: 407,889
marirah: 133,069
total: 540,958
What fandoms do you write for?
DC these days. I started in the one direction fandom, played around with Percy Jackson, the MCU, and Star Trek
What are your top five fics by kudos?
marirah:
Protected - T Sladick. After another blowout fight with Bruce, Dick offers to let his little brothers move in with him. And the mystery boyfriend they've never heard of before. (3.5k)
Daily Planet: Live From Gotham - G Superbat. Clark has an old crush on Batman and a new crush on Bruce Wayne. Lois is merciless. (3.5k)
Red - E JayTim. Jason doesn't know who this Red is or why he's in Dick's apartment, but it doesn't matter in the end. (6k)
Unread - G Jason & Dick. Jason finally caves to the kid's demands that he clear out his inbox. As it turns out, Dick has been writing to him for years. (1.5k)
Loud - G DickTim. Tim finds a little bird in his Nest and takes him home. (1k)
metukah:
Introducing Us - G batfam gen, side StephCass. The Justice League doesn’t know how many bats there are, or where Batman is keeping them all. (1.9k)
Field Trip - G Peter Parker & the Avengers. Peter Parker and his classmates take a trip to Stark Industries. He only spends about half of it wanting to melt into the floor. (3.2k)
I'm (Not) a Mess - G JayRoy. Roy Harper is Neal Caffrey. He's not letting that get in the way of his relationship with his daughter. (4.7k)
Ninjas as a Catalyst - G Birdflash. Peter doesn't like to remind people of how good an investigator he is, but he can definitely connect the dots. (4k)
Double Take - G Birdflash. Several years after Neal Caffrey disappears, Peter and Elizabeth are visiting El’s cousin Wally, who is engaged to Dick Grayson. Who used to be Neal Caffrey. (1.2k)
What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
i'm not really that angsty a writer i think? i thought letter (dicktim, SPYRAL) had an angsty ending but i checked, and... it doesn't really lmao
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
i mostly write happy endings, but my favorite one technically isn't up yet. i'm just really happy with how my joint year of the otp/year of jason and slade series is going.
Do you get hate on your fic?
luckily, i don't really!
Do you write smut?
absolutely (see above lmao)
Do you write crossovers?
i've written a lot of white collar x dc, and i've been playing with dc x marvel x percy jackson recently
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that i know of
Have you ever had a fic translated?
i had someone ask once but i don't think anything ever came of it
Have you ever co-written a fic?
i had a co-written series once
What‘s your all-time favourite ship?
right now it's 1000% dicktim! (send me a message to join an 18+ dicktim server!)
What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
i have trouble finishing anything longer than a oneshot, they just rot in my scrivener files forever
What’s your writing strengths?
does fluff count? i like my fluff
What’s your writing weaknesses?
keeping up with things longer than 1k. also i tend to burn myself out
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
i'd feel more comfortable with it if i spoke the language. but i have been known to use pet names from other languages sometimes, namely Hebrew
First fandom you wrote for?
the first thing i ever wrote (in middle school) was technically percy jackson self insert. i just wanted to be friends with percy and annabeth. i still want to be friends with percy and annabeth
Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
oh man. pretty much everything i write, i write for myself, so all of my works have been my favorites at one point. right now, i'm really happy with Negative and Aperature, which are a series with reverse Robins dicktim.
I tag @klarion-the-witch-boy , @the-alice-of-hearts , @ginbenci, and @bittercape

Postcards from Snagglepuss
How unlikely a Crossroads of the World can it get exactly?
BREEZEWOOD, PA: Otherwise known as Exit 161 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike ... and a rather bizarre sort of junction for I-76 and I-70, the latter being the freeway for Baltimore and, via I-270, Washington, DC, with connexions for the South, Florida even--all a credit to policies which, in the early 1970's, prevented a direct sort of interconnect from the Pennsylvania Turnpike to I-70, requiring a rather convoluted approach to get vis-a-vis I-70 and the Turnpike, involving no less than three sets of stoplights(!!!) on the I-70 approach in Breezewood. "City of Motels," even!!
But still, gentle Hanna-Barberian, Breezewood is a rather modest hamlet whose importance seems rather magnified by circumstances such as just explained. And arriving in Breezewood via PA 287, US 220/I-99, US 22, US 522 and US 30, a/k/a the Lincoln Highway, we managed to find ourselves in this the Keystone of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
And find ourselves we did at a decent-looking truck stop, managing to avoid the neurotic excesses of truck drivers having to take statutory rest stops after so long on the highway ... and managing to avail ourselves of some worthwhile home cooking which, for some motorhomers like us, could certainly be worth it. Especially when it gets to the point where foil-roasted potato wedges can only go so far.
And boy, could Magilla pack down his lunch, and then some, even with an "all you can eat" soup and salad bar in the bargain!
Not to be outdone, though, was a video call with no less than The Banana Splits, wondering essentially what was happening with us in spite of the Allegheny Mountains interfering with cell phone signals; Fleegle, for his part, couldn't help but be stunned--STUNNED, I tell you!!--by our taking the call from a truck stop in Breezewood, and our motely crew taking turns sharing the converse as much as the meals we were having.
Bingo, at one point, couldn't help but take especial interest in Magilla; this going back to when the latter had a short-lived TV ad campaign peddling sasparilla which got too out of control. And was Bingo surprised to hear where Magilla was joining us on the road for awhile, with a new group of happy campers joining us before long.
And at any rate, Huckleberry Hound and I explained the fact that, for the next stage, Wally and Squiddly would be staying on ... with Yogi, Boo-Boo, and Magilla to be replaced by Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy and Hokey Wolf and Ding-a-Ling at the Inevitable Undisclosed Location.
With the next Big Experience being beside some mountain lake in the general vicinity of Estes Park, Colorado, some back country camping, snorkelling even ... so stay tuned, fellow Hanna-Barberians, for what develops! (Oh, and did I mention the next Character Convocation at Pie Day this August in Braham, Minnesota, followed by the Minnesota State Fair even?!)

When We Were 13, Jeff’s Father Left The Needle Down On A Journey Record Before Leaving The House One Morning And Never Coming Back
And this is why none of us sing along to “Don’t Stop Believin’” when we are being driven by Jeff’s mom, four boys packed in the backseat tight like the tobacco in them cigarettes Jeff’s mom got riding shotgun with us around I-270 in a powder blue Ford Taurus where four years later Jeff will lose his virginity to a girl behind the East High School football field then later that night his keys and pants in the school pool so that he has to run home crying to his mother with an oversized shirt and no pants, like a cartoon bear, and the next day when I hear this story, I will think about what it means for someone to become naked two times in one night to rush into the warmth of two women, once becoming a man and once becoming a boy all over again but right now it is just us in this car with Jeff’s mother, that cigarette smoke dancing from her lips until it catches the breeze from the cracked front window and glides back towards us a vagabond, searching for a throat to move into and cripple while Neal Schon’s guitar rides out the speakers and I don’t know how many open windows a man has to climb out of in the middle of the night in order to have hands that can make anything scream like that. nothing knows the sound of abandonment like a highway does, not even God. in the 1980’s, everyone wrote songs about someone leaving except for this one cuz it’s about how the morning explodes over two people in one bed who didn’t know each other the night before when alone was the only other option and their homes had too many mirrors for all that shit and so it is possible that this is the only song written in the 1980’s about how fear turns into promise I think I know this because there is so much piano spilling all over our laps that we can’t help but to smile since we still black and know nothing can ransack sorrow like a piano. Jeff’s mother’s hand trembles and still wears a wedding ring so she pulls over to the side of the highway and turns the volume up so loud after the second guitar solo when the keys kick in again that we can barely hear the cocktail of laughter and crying consuming the front seat until the song fades away and the radio is low again and the ring once on Jeff’s mother’s hand is on the side of the highway beneath us, a sacrifice and so maybe this is why grandma said a piano can coax even the most vicious of ghosts out of a body. and so maybe this is why my father would stare at the empty spaces my mother once occupied, sit me down at a baby grand and whisper play me something, child.

Mike Ford
Tumblr media
Basic Info
Mike Ford is entering his age 29 season from Belle Mead, NJ, and Princeton University. Ford has two minor league options left, and will be arbitration eligible in 2023.
Mike Ford Off the Field
Look at his adorable dog. Look at it.
Tumblr media
Shoutout to Carter.
Tumblr media
Ford is also working with former Yankee David Hale to make a game called Battle Bags, which is like Cornhole meets Battleship.

Mike Ford’s 2020 Season
Mike had a pretty disappointing season in 2020.
Tumblr media
After having a great 2019 season, he really, really, struggled in 2020. Anyone hitting that poorly is a bad sign, but when you’re a first baseman and designated hitter, you’ve gotta perform better than that. Now, for Mike’s sake, he got absolutely screwed a lot last year: Ford had a .140 BABIP last year, which was the worst in MLB for anyone with at least 70 plate appearances.
Tumblr media
He hit .135, but had a xBA a hundred points higher. He slugged .270, but had a slugging a hundred points higher. he had a .224 wOBA, but had a xwOBA ninety points higher.
Tumblr media
A large part of that was his inability to deal with the shift—here’s his 2020 spray chart:
Tumblr media
There’s a lot of outs right where the extra defender would be in 2020. Next, his 2019 spray chart:
Tumblr media
Still a lot of balls right at the shift, but there’s a lot more reds and blues to the left side of the field.
Tumblr media
His pull percentage actually went down this year, but his opposite field percentage also went down. The bigger issue was his ground ball and line drive rate going way up, and his fly ball and flare rates going way down. Ford’s at his best when he’s pulling and launching pitches in the air and when he’s getting pokes into left field, and instead of getting those he hit a bunch of balls into the ground into the shift.
Ford is your stereotypical lefty slugger who wants the pitch inside and struggles against outside pitches, when he’s doing well (like in 2019) this is what his zone looks like:
Tumblr media
Compared to 2020, when he struggled (although his xwOBA looked a lot better on inside pitches):
Tumblr media
But, as you’d expect, pitchers know this and just threw everything outside in 2020:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ford in 2019 also made his living just destroying fastballs, but really struggled against them in 2020 (despite getting more fastballs than in 2019):
Tumblr media
He also has reverse splits overall in his short career:
Tumblr media
But in 2020 was hitless against lefties:
Tumblr media
Some pros for Ford however—he saw a lot of pitches (4.3 pitches per plate appearance) and still barely struck out (only a 19% strikeout rate.) His average launch angle was half of what it was the previous season, so this feels like a really fixable problem. Is he a true 137 OPS+ player like he was in 2019? Probably not, but it seems really likely that he can bounce back to being at least an above average hitter in the right spots.
Optimistic 2021 Projection
Mike Ford starts the season at the alternate site, but gets the call up due to injuries to Voit and Stanton. With the season being closer to normal than in 2020, he’s able to go back to mashing pitches, and ends up hitting 30 homers over the course of the season with a 130 OPS+. Ford ends up getting some starts in the postseason as a first base/DH option, and after Voit Wally Pipp’d Greg Bird, Ford returns the favor to him. He hits a walk off in the postseason as the Yankees win World Series #28.
Pessimistic Projection for 2021
Ford continues to hit the ball into the shift and can’t adjust to major league pitching. He continues to struggle and ends up as a career AAAA player, and he gets less than 30 PA this season for the Yankees as they go to other options in the system.
Sam’s Official Gift Basket Projection for 2021
I really, really, really like Mike Ford the person and the player. I feel bad because the best case scenario for the team is that Mike Ford gets minimal plate appearances because that means Stanton and Voit stay healthy, but I think he ends up getting about 100 PA on the season and ends up with about a 108 OPS+ and seven homers on the season as he lifts the ball more and gets a little more lucky this season.
Join us tomorrow when Evan takes you Inside the Gift Basket on a prospect he probably doesn’t know enough about, SP Albert Abreu.

Biden officially secures enough electors to become president (AP) California certified its presidential election Friday and appointed 55 electors pledged to vote for Democrat Joe Biden, officially handing him the Electoral College majority needed to win the White House. Secretary of State Alex Padilla’s formal approval of Biden’s win in the state brought his tally of pledged electors so far to 279, according to a tally by The Associated Press. That’s just over the 270 threshold for victory. Although it’s been apparent for weeks that Biden won the presidential election, his accrual of more than 270 electors is the first step toward the White House, said Edward B. Foley, a law professor at Ohio State University. “It is a legal milestone and the first milestone that has that status,” Foley said. “Everything prior to that was premised on what we call projections.” The electors named Friday will meet Dec. 14, along with counterparts in each state, to formally vote for the next president. Most states have laws binding their electors to the winner of the popular vote in their state, measures that were upheld by a Supreme Court decision this year. There have been no suggestions that any of Biden’s pledged electors would contemplate not voting for him.
Further Slowdown in Job Creation Sets Off Economic Alarms (NYT) The American job engine has slowed significantly, stranding millions who have yet to find work after being idled by the pandemic, and offering fresh evidence that the recovery is faltering. The Labor Department reported Friday that employers added 245,000 jobs in November, fewer than half the number created in October. The pace of hiring has now diminished for five straight months. While many of those knocked out of a job early in the pandemic have been rehired, there are roughly 10 million fewer jobs than there were in February. Many of the unemployed are weeks away from losing benefits that have sustained them, with emergency assistance approved by Congress last spring set to expire at the end of the year. The latest sign of economic headwinds arrived as members of Congress struggled to reach agreement on a new aid package. A bipartisan group of legislators has put forward a $900 billion proposal, and the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, said the disappointing jobs report should add momentum to negotiations.
Southern California, San Joaquin Valley under restrictions (AP) Faced with a dire shortage of hospital beds, health officials announced Saturday the vast region of Southern California and a large swath of the Central Valley will be placed under a sweeping new lockdown in an urgent attempt to slow the rapid rise of coronavirus cases. he new measures will take effect Sunday evening and remain in place for at least three weeks, meaning the lockdown will cover the Christmas holiday. Much of the state is on the brink of the same restrictions. Some counties have opted to impose them even before the mandate kicks in, including five San Francisco Bay Area counties where the measures also take effect starting Sunday. With a new lockdown looming, many rushed out to supermarkets Saturday and lined up outside salons to squeeze in a haircut before the orders kicked in. The measures bar all on-site restaurant dining and close hair and nail salons, movie theaters and many other businesses, as well as museums and playgrounds. It says people may not congregate with anyone outside their household and must always wear masks when they go outside.
Honduras president seeks assistance, warns of increased migration in wake of devastating hurricanes (Washington Post) Weeks after Hurricanes Eta and Iota struck Central America in quick succession, nearly 100,000 Hondurans are living in shelters, many of which have become coronavirus hotspots. The country’s economy has been paralyzed. It is an unprecedented crisis, Honduran President, Juan Orlando Hernández said in an interview with The Washington Post on Friday. Hernández warned that in the absence of a coordinated international response, migration from Honduras to the United States could surge. “Imagine someone who lost everything, his house, his source of income, who feels hopeless and believes that there’s nothing left for him,” Hernández said. “And then he has a relative (in the United States) who says: ‘Come here.’ “ On Friday, Honduras filed a request with the Trump administration for temporary protected status (TPS) for Honduran citizens who are already in the United States. Guatemala, which was also affected by the two hurricanes, filed its own request last month. The Trump administration has tried to end existing TPS programs, which protect migrants from deportation while their countries manage crises.
The coronavirus has come roaring back into Brazil (Washington Post) RIO DE JANEIRO—For weeks, it has seemed that the pandemic was on the way out. The beaches, bars and restaurants had filled. The message: Rio de Janeiro was back. Now the city—and much of Brazil—is grappling with the sudden realization that the coronavirus has suddenly roared back. In Rio de Janeiro, where the virus has already killed tens of thousands, upturned the economy and sent rates of homelessness soaring, moments that recall the darkest days of the pandemic are once more appearing in the news. Sick people, unable to get help in the medical system, are again being found dead at home. Lines stretching into the hundreds are forming for intensive care beds. Hospital officials are warning of supply shortages and an imminent collapse in medical services. Even the vaunted private heath-care system reached 98 percent capacity in its intensive care units this past week, officials said. In states across the country, the situation wasn’t much better. Public health officials are increasingly worried.
Black Man Is Beaten on Camera, Thrusting French Police Into Spotlight (NYT) Without the video, Michel Zecler believes his case would have been reduced, at most, to a brief news item. Maybe something like this: “A young man, Black, wearing a sweatshirt and a hood, a shoulder bag, assaulted police officers, attempted to seize their weapons,” Mr. Zecler said in an interview on Thursday. “If I didn’t have my cameras, I’d be in prison today,” he added, referring to the security cameras in the vestibule of the building where he keeps his music studio. The footage from those cameras, showing police officers gratuitously beating Mr. Zecler, 41, a producer well known in the world of French rap, has instead helped fuel a political crisis in France and once again turned a spotlight on the issue of police brutality, especially against the country’s minority citizens. Mr. Zecler became the focus of a national uproar that has forced President Emmanuel Macron’s government to scrap and rewrite part of a security bill that would have restricted the filming of police. Critics say a provision in the security bill was aimed at snuffing out precisely the kinds of cellphone videos of the police roughing up demonstrators that have brought them under intense new scrutiny.
Swiss slopes buzz as those of neighbors sit idle in pandemic (AP) Two weeks after beating COVID-19, Thierry Salamin huffs as his ski boots crunch through Swiss snow near the Matterhorn peak, readying for a downhill run with his mood as bright as his blue and fluorescent yellow ski getup and the sun overhead. The 31-year-old real estate agent from the southwestern Swiss region of Wallis can’t believe he is skiing during a pandemic, let alone one that he personally endured—and which has driven a wedge between his country and its Alpine neighbors over where people can ski, and where they can’t. While the coronavirus resurgence has led Austria, France, and Italy to shut or severely restrict access to their ski stations this holiday season, Switzerland has kept its slopes open—a move that has fanned grumbling about an unlevel playing field when it comes to Alpine fun. The Swiss say they’re taking reasonable action to fight the coronavirus. Authorities require masks in ski lifts and queues, and recommend hand hygiene and physical distancing measures.
Diplomacy was the real loser (Christian Science Monitor) This autumn’s intense six-week war between Armenia and Azerbaijan offers a stark lesson in the costs of diplomatic failure: An unresolved territorial dispute suddenly erupted in violence that took thousands of lives and left a vastly changed landscape in its wake. Azerbaijan won the war with arms and advice from Turkey, dramatically reversing Armenia’s decisive victory a quarter century ago that had been frozen in place since 1994. The nub of the conflict is the Armenian-populated exclave of Nagorno-Karabakh, a Soviet-era autonomous region inside Azerbaijan that declared independence in 1988 as the USSR began to crumble. In the long and bloody war that ensued, Armenian forces not only secured the region, they occupied a huge swath of additional territory and expelled around 800,000 ethnic Azeris from it. The new armistice, which Russia imposed last month, restores all of those illegally seized lands to Azerbaijan and inserts 2,000 Russian peacekeeping troops into the area to enforce the deal. This dramatic outcome has triggered mass jubilation in Azerbaijan, plunged Armenia into a storm of national anguish, and left international diplomacy licking its wounds. The cease-fire lines brokered by Moscow almost exactly follow the diplomatic settlement that the international community had advocated for almost 30 years, but they were achieved by force of arms. The Minsk Group, comprising the United States, France, and Russia, which had been charged with resolving the conflict, proved irrelevant as the crisis climaxed; it was two regional powers, Russia and Turkey, that brought the warring parties to heel.
Trump restricts U.S. visas for Chinese Communist Party members and families (Washington Post) The State Department imposed tighter visa regulations for Chinese Communist Party members Thursday in a move that puts limits on U.S. travel for tens of millions of Chinese working in government and other prominent roles—and further stokes tensions with Beijing ahead of the Biden administration. The new rules would affect members of China’s ruling party, who number around 92 million, and their close relatives. The impact could be sweeping in a country where party members dominate the upper echelons not only in government but also in business, media, academia and other areas. The restrictions would limit visas for party members and their relatives to a single entry, with the visa duration lasting one month. Previously, Chinese nationals were eligible to apply for tourism or business visas, for instance, that are valid for 10 years and for unlimited entries. The new rules for party members could be disruptive for trade, academic and cultural exchanges between the two countries and the personal lives of the elite. Communist Party membership is not explicitly required but is often a de facto requisite for career advancement to top positions in China from the government to most major industries and academia. Many rank-and-file corporate employees and low-level civil servants are also dues-paying members.
Trump orders most American troops to leave Somalia (AP) The Pentagon said Friday it is pulling most U.S. troops out of Somalia on President Donald Trump’s orders, continuing a post-election push by Trump to shrink U.S. involvement in counterterrorism missions abroad. Without providing details, the Pentagon said in a short statement that “a majority” of U.S. troops and assets in Somalia will be withdrawn in early 2021. There are currently about 700 troops in that Horn of Africa nation, training and advising local forces in an extended fight against the extremist group al-Shabab, an affiliate of al-Qaida. Trump recently ordered troop drawdowns in Afghanistan and Iraq, and he was expected to withdraw some or all troops from Somalia. Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had said on Wednesday that the future structure of the U.S. military presence in Somalia was still in debate.
Ethiopia’s war in Tigray shows no signs of abating, despite government’s victory claims (Washington Post) Clashes continued across Ethiopia’s Tigray region and humanitarian aid remained paused at its border Friday, despite government claims that military operations had ceased and pledges to allow U.N. agencies access to hundreds of thousands of people who rely on them for food. Diplomats, aid workers and analysts said in interviews that the war in Tigray, Ethiopia’s northernmost region, was far from over even with government troops in effective control of the region’s main city, Mekele. The fighting has shifted to Tigray’s many craggy mountain ranges—difficult terrain where TPLF leaders and militia hold the advantage of familiarity and have been able to regroup. The TPLF’s leadership remains largely intact despite abandoning Mekele last week. On Thursday, in a message aired on a regional television network, one prominent leader called on supporters to “rise and deploy to battle in tens of thousands.”
