Hi! Do you know any books by Indigenous authors from the archipelago rather than Filipino ppl researching or writing about them (acknowledging all these terms are fraught)
Chiva: A Reader on Ibaloy History and Culture is written by “a combination of professional researchers and non-academics” which includes native perspectives so you might wanna check that out.
anything by june chayapan prill-brett; she is half igorot and has been studying bontok societies for a long time. she was featured in the documentary walang rape sa bontoc.
if you want to include bangsamoro authors, who are indigenous to their lands but are not categorized as Indigenous Peoples per se, then you can go for The Rulers of Magindanao in Modern History, 1515–1903: Continuity and Change in a Traditional Realm in the Southern Philippines by datu atty. michael ong mastura. he is chinese-maguindanaoan and one of the (many, many) descendants of sultan kudarat.
this one i haven’t read but i’d also keep an eye out for Transfiguring Mindanao: A Mindanao Reader, which may include lumad or moro authors.

all this
rape culture = seeing sex and reproduction as methods of holding others hostage and instilling outright terror to justify its influence and its participants' entitlement to strip you of the power to own your body
rape culture = seeing sex and reproduction as a weapon to torture and own others, whether it's you making someone eat your genitals or you passing laws to criminalize sex work and abortion
rape culture = policing sex and reproduction to be limited only to activities made to birth people that its active participants, especially cisgender people, find desirable
(this is why the unborn are a convenient demographic for everyone who comes to the defense of rape culture, while disabled people and nonwhite people are killed, mocked, or sterilized)
rape culture = pro-life, gender critical, incels, biological determinism, male gaze, domestic violence, paederasty/paedophilia/grooming, transphobia, queerphobia, aspecphobia, conversion therapy (incl. ABA and residential schooling), wage gaps, skin bleaching ads, drugging drinks at parties, jokes, child marriage and pregnancy, low ages of consent, Leonardo DiCaprio, fatphobia, “you're so mature for your age”, people scared of masks because their rapists muzzled their mouths and noses, “you look better without makeup”, deepfaking images of naked girls, intergenerational incest, “I have a boyfriend” as rape prevention, police toying with rape cases, necrophilia, Hays Code, dishonor in birthing people with Müllerian systems (aka assigned female), Indigenous groups whose women now roam wearing blouses when they used to be comfortable topless (cf Walang Rape Sa Bontok), psychiatry,
the thing is that they're so fascinated by sex, they love sex, they can't imagine a world without sex - they need sex to sell things, they need sex to be part of their personality, they need sex to prove their power - but they hate sex. they are disgusted by it.
sex is the only thing that holds their attention, and it is also the thing that can never be discussed directly.
you can't tell a child the normal names for parts of their body, that's sexual in nature, because the body isn't a body, it's a vessel of sex. it doesn't matter that it's been proven in studies (over and over) that kids need to know the names of their genitals; that they internalize sexual shame at a very young age and know it's 'dirty' to have a body; that it overwhelmingly protects children for them to have the correct words to communicate with. what matters is that they're sexual organs. what matters is that it freaks them out to think about kids having body parts - which only exist in the context of sex.
it's gross to talk about a period or how to check for cancer in a testicle or breast. that is nasty, illicit. there will be no pain meds for harsh medical procedures, just because they feature a cervix.
but they will put out an ad of you scantily-clad. you will sell their cars for them, because you have abs, a body. you will drip sex. you will ooze it, like a goo. like you were put on this planet to secrete wealth into their open palms.
they will hit you with that same palm. it will be disgusting that you like leather or leashes, but they will put their movie characters in leather and latex. it will be wrong of you to want sexual freedom, but they will mark their success in the number of people they bed.
they will crow that it's inappropriate for children so there will be no lessons on how to properly apply a condom, even to teens. it's teaching them the wrong things. no lessons on the diversity of sexual organ growth, none on how to obtain consent properly, none on how to recognize when you feel unsafe in your body. if you are a teenager, you have probably already been sexualized at some point in your life. you will have seen someone also-your-age who is splashed across a tv screen or a magazine or married to someone three times your age. you will watch people pull their hair into pigtails so they look like you. so that they can be sexy because of youth. one of the most common pornography searches involves newly-18 young women. girls. the words "barely legal," a hiss of glass sand over your skin.
barely legal. there are bills in place that will not allow people to feel safe in their own bodies. there are people working so hard to punish any person for having sex in a way that isn't god-fearing and submissive. heteronormative. the sex has to be at their feet, on your knees, your eyes wet. when was the first time you saw another person crying in pornography and thought - okay but for real. she looks super unhappy. later, when you are unhappy, you will close your eyes and ignore the feeling and act the role you have been taught to keep playing. they will punish the sex workers, remove the places they can practice their trade safely. they will then make casual jokes about how they sexually harass their nanny.
and they love sex but they hate that you're having sex. you need to have their ornamental, perfunctory, dispassionate sex. so you can't kiss your girlfriend in the bible belt because it is gross to have sex with someone of the same gender. so you can't get your tubes tied in new england because you might change your mind. so you can't admit you were sexually assaulted because real men don't get hurt, you should be grateful. you cannot handle your own body, you cannot handle the risks involved, let other people decide that for you. you aren't ready yet.
but they need you to have sex because you need to have kids. at 15, you are old enough to parent. you are not old enough to hear the word fuck too many times on television.
they are horrified by sex and they never stop talking about it, thinking about it, making everything unnecessarily preverted. the saying - a thief thinks everyone steals. they stand up at their podiums and they look out at the crowd and they sign a bill into place that makes sexwork even more unsafe and they stand up and smile and sign a bill that makes gender-affirming care illegal and they get up and they shrug their shoulders and write don't say gay and they get up, and they make the world about sex, but this horrible, plastic vision of it that they have. this wretched, emotionless thing that holds so much weight it's staggering. they put their whole spine behind it and they push and they say it's normal!
this horrible world they live in. disgusted and also obsessed.

Igorot, Hindi Igorot Lang
The photo above showcases the artistic skills from the talented department of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines Baguio. It does not, however, only exhibit the creativity of the students but also shows the Cordilleran culture and the beautiful ethnolinguistic people of the Igorots. Now, reading the word “Igorot”, what first came to your mind? You might imagine some people on their 'bahag' or you might think of a feral tribe preparing for headhunting. If you did think of these (or any similar stereotypes about the Igorot) then that is where the problem lies. We are aware that the artists of the lanterns above meant no harm and only wanted to show the Igorots and their culture in a very creative manner. The problem is, however, lies on the stereotypical portrayal of the Igorots—always wearing their traditional clothes, doing nothing but rituals, and being “uncivilized uplanders”.
Looking back, I remembered a classmate of mine who grew up in Manila and came to Baguio for the first time. I remembered how shocked (with a hint of disappointment) she was the moment she learned that locals and Igorots don’t wear tapis and bahag every day. Another instance was when we were watching “Walang Rape sa Bontok”, a lot of us were surprised to learn that they were more civilized than what we expected. These misconceptions were mainly created by media and the constant portrayal of artworks like the one above as Igorots being nothing more than them wearing their traditional clothing and doing rituals. These creates a misrepresentation of the Igorots as uncivilized. Rather than portraying the Igorots as exotic beings, we should realize that they, like us, are also human who wears modern clothing, lives in modern homes, and can adapt to a modern life. Our variety of culture should never also be a hindrance to what we perceive as what we see. Yes, a lot of areas back then were colonized, converted and influenced by the culture of our conquerors, but there are also civilizations who were not been colonized in the first place and maintained there culture and beliefs. One must first understand and be knowledgable of what we want to convey and what and how others will interpret the message an image, symbol, or even an apparition as we have different perception on how we view the world and the reality.

I'm frustrated to not immediately find an online way to stream the documentary Walang Rape sa Bontok but it's a must-see for everyone who gets this thread; for now here's just a talk with the researchers behind the docu
I got to hear from Carla and Lester as well when I watched it
Carla spent years in Bontoc during her research; she could walk around without a bra and nobody catcalled her but when she moved to Cagayan, a nearby province, all that catcalling is back
she used to call the Indigenous perception of it “simplistic” (because breasts are just breasts, why are we making it complicated?) but she regrets the term now — I myself would have just said it was a straightforward way of thinking, no bullshit
it's that no-bullshit way of thinking that allowed women to just walk around without the need for a blouse
and whenever the villages were at war, those women would just show their own pussy off so the men would leave them alone (their belief: it will curse you to look at where you came from)
the cons I saw were things like corporal punishment and zero privacy but otherwise the very structure of Bontok culture, alongside the limited accessibility of its geography that made it harder for colonizers to just barge in, has been quite effective in preventing rape for so long until the past few decades
I'm still thinking about it
white people ruined the non sexual intimacy of nakedness methinks

Haha. Unang eksena. Ang ganda. Nasa sala yata yun. As in konsepto ng rape. Haha. Walang malimalisya. Sabay sabay kung maligo, lalaki man at babae. Kasi wala ngang malisya. Alam mo yun? As in lahat talaga ng tinanong, ganun yung reaksyon eh. Haha. Back to basics lang din? Wala munang complications? Simple lang? Pwede kaya?

Ayaw nila ilet go.

There really good documentaries on air on our local stations every Sunday, in a segment called CineTotoo. And its wonderful distinction from the usual documentaries featured is that it doesn't focus on the flaws of the government, but of society. These documentaries open our eyes to our culture, instead of shoving the same idea every day that 'it's all the government's fault,' because, well, that isn't the only issue here.
I've watched two so far. One highlights men ballet dancers and their passion and hardships in perfecting their art. It's an odd entry because ballet isn't prominent in our country unlike before where ballet is only seen by the elite, now it's nothing more but a performance similar to the ones we watch on television daily. The title of the entry is MANanayaw, which in english is Dancer (or perhaps Performer) though there's a pun there that emphasizes the word Man.
The other is about rape culture. Two sexually-abused women investigate about this place in Bontok where there is no rape. In Bontok, no one knows the concept of rape, even the word for it and so they do not have laws and punishments for it because they don't do it because they don't know it. This conclusion was the result of a research done by a university teacher many years back.. The two women visit Bontok with questions like 'How is a rape-less society possible?' or if things have changed for this province, then 'How does rape culture penetrate one's culture?' The title of the entry is Walang Rape sa Bontok, or in english, There is no Rape in Bontok.
Everyone should watch these documentaries because you really learn a lot about them. I did.

on this topic of nudity, just wanted to share a local anti-rape culture documentary called Walang rape sa Bontok / Bontoc, Rapeless (2014) !! which talks not only about desexualized nudity among the Bontok-Igorot people, but also tackled a 2004 study talking about how the Bontok ppl had a near “rape-less” society !!! (though in the present day, i dont think this is the case anymore for the tribe? because of the general modern day views on nudity and rape :( )
while the documentary was previously uploaded on vimeo, it is no longer accessible, sadly :( but! here is a trailer for the film, as well as a review written in english that non-filos can read! (filos u can read this taglish review and a bunch more on scribd n wordpress if u google hehe)
point is that nudity wasnt always a malicious concept AND that many cultures over the world understood that AND that colonialism fucked up the way we perceived our bodies n sexuality and ill forever be angry as hell abt that
white people ruined the non sexual intimacy of nakedness methinks
#i talk#feel free to correct me on my info!! its not easy finding local resources online :< at least for me since im not a legit researcher#so like! definitely look this up on ur own time hehe !! filos if u know anything on this topic pls feel free to lmk as well!!#important!!#tw rape mention#also side note... talkin abt the whole bible business#the reason they were ashamed was because they disobeyed God is the thing :^/ not that they were naked. afaik i remember from my theo class#like. they covered themselves up to try to hide from God that they sinned. like they tried hiding their 'spirit' but u cant cover that up—#—from God. so the next best thing is to. cover ur body.#the sin isnt nudity ... the sin was disobedience .... and their awareness was of the fact they had sinned n disobeyed God ...............#at least thats what i remember from theology lol <3 so yea just saying#ask to tag#tw: rape mention#rape mention#rape mention tw
