Max hates makeup. Okay, hate is a strong word, but she's young and her stepfather (she'll be damned if she ever calls him Dad) has it in his head that every girl loves that gooey shit.

She puts on a fake smile as she opens up her Christmas present; another makeup kit. Her mother won't let her throw the growing mound of kits in her closet away for some reason. Marrying Neil changed her. Max can't quite put a finger on it, but Susan is different.

Speaking of acting different...

She feels the burn of her step-brother's intense glare searing holes into the back of her head, and whips her head around to glare right back.

It's then when she realizes that while she's still halfway through unwrapping gifts, there isn't a single one with Billy's name on it.

He huffs, pushing back his chair. "This has all been fun. Can I go now?"

Neil moves like lightning, grabbing Billy by the wrist and squeezing until he sits back down. "You will sit until your sister is done opening her gifts."

Susan looks away, eying Max as though she should do the same.

Billy mutters something under his breath.

Neil narrows his eyes in suspicion. "What was that?"

"She's not my sister." The way Billy says it holds none of the heat Max is used to. He sounds... resigned. Almost afraid.

One thing she could always count on was Billy not being scared of anything. To hear a slight tremble in his voice only makes Max grip her new skateboard tighter.

Neil slaps Billy in the face, and he just sits there, stock still.

Max suddenly wants to grip the asshole's neck until he chokes.

"Neil..." Susan starts.

Good. Mom'll speak up, right?

"It's Christmas."

Neil slaps Billy again, harder.

Billy's eyes never leave the meaty finger in his face, his bulky form shrinking before Max's eyes. He's never looked so small. So helpless.

"Did you hear your mother? You're ruining Christmas morning. Can't go one day without a screw up, isn't that right, Billy?"

Max's breath catches in her throat, her stomach lurching. Neil's words are eerily similar to what she's yelled at Billy before.

I'm gonna be sick.

Billy stares blankly at him.

Neil slams his fists on the table, spilling the orange juice all over the breakfast Billy woke up at the crack of dawn to fix.

Come to think of it, Max wasn't sure he got a wink of sleep. Yesterday he had been sent to take Max so they could pick out a tree. Susan and Neil went along for once, but they let Billy carry the tree to the car. When Max offered to help, Neil shot her down, saying it was "a boy's job".

Billy never got to voice his opinion on the tree.

"ISN'T THAT RIGHT!" Neil bellows in his face.

Susan jumps, otherwise making no movements to diffuse the situation. She refuses to look at Billy, who's sad, dead blue eyes seem to be screaming "look at me! help me!"

"Yes, sir," he replies solemnly.

Neil nods, satisfied, and starts humming "American Pie" as he turns his back on his son.

Frank With An Inexperienced Reader

a/n: the request was for frank AND matt, but i haven't written matt's headcanons yet, so here's frankie-poo's for now

warnings: virgin!reader becoming notvirgin!reader lmfao, age gap, smut obviously, frank talks you through it, oral (fem receiving), fingering, the usual smut stuff, etc.

Frank would be hesitant at first when you ask him to take your virginity. You’ve done other stuff with him, but you’ve never gone all the way, and he’s nervous about taking that away from you.

Like you’re so much younger than him, and he doesn’t want to take advantage of you, but holy shit you’re so pretty and he can’t deny you anything so he just takes it really slow instead and gives you the power to choose when/where it happens.

You’re just as nervous as he is about it but for different reasons obviously. He’s so experienced and you’re the exact opposite and you spend at least a week freaking out about it before finally giving in and showing up at his apartment to be properly fucked.

wow that was A LOT. from what i can tell the webtoon did justice to the lore and action sequences but might have missed out on the nuances of kdj and yjh as well as the side characters personalities. esp after reading the latest chapter in the webtoon and hearing novel readers talk about it seems they may have skipped on some things. regardless this read was super fun, i adore and hate kdj that infuriating brat. can’t wait to get to the next chapters!

The Touchstarved DEMO by @redspringstudio! I had so much fun replaying this DEMO over and over, I truly cannot wait for the full release. The art is gorgeous, the writing is excellent, and I am surprised at how much I really loved each character, I expected to at least hate one or two of them like with My Next Life lol. I highly recommend checking out the DEMO if you're a fan of otome games or gothic stories!

Summary:

I thought when playing more otome games it would be really hard to beat My Next Life, simply because I am a huge fan of the source material that preceded the game. But wow, with the way this game is setting up plotlines, the full version of this game could easily make it onto my top favorite games list. Otome games are all about replayability, and the way just the DEMO is so rich with content and alternating paths makes me so excited and hopeful for the full game's release. I am bummed I got onto the Touchstarved train late and missed the kickstarter, but hopefully a shop will open around release bc I'd kill for an art book. The art is just so gorgeous and I cannot wait to do some studies, especially with color and rendering. Before playing otome games, I like to look at the character profiles beforehand and predict who I'd like and dislike. And I am very delightfully surprised that any initial dislike I had of characters all but vanished because the writing and personalities of these characters were so well made. I thought I was going to hate Leander but he ended up being the character I'm most curious about. Although I would say my least favorite is Kuras simply bc I'm not a fan of romancing doctors, I am still curious about his background story and connection to the others. In other words, great character who is just not my type. I am also delightfully surprised at the "vulgarity" in this game without being overly explicit -- I have grown so tired of how sanitized a lot of games and shows have been that it's always really nice seeing indie companies play by their own rules. I am so glad I stumbled across this game!! At this point I've done every route favorably but haven't tried all the "wrong" options -- more to play whenever I think about how excited I am for the full game! I've also seen the sneak peaks of an upcoming update ^_^. Highly recommend the game!!

i have been reading fic since i was like. nine? (unsupervised internet access and natural curiosity babyyyy) and then right before my freshman year of college i joined a discord server for these youtubers that was for gay ppl only and also leaned pretty heavy into rpf. but. i want to start trying to support women’s sports more so i watched a college basketball game today!! and ok wow women’s basketball is so much more interesting than men’s (i have previous exposure against my will to men’s sports bc i am in the u.s. and also my dad had a football “career” eyeroll)

the low center of gravity for one thing makes EVERY move SO much more profound and COMPLEX!!!! and hard-hitting!!!! moves that i’ve seen men try to do as pros and like. fall or trip and miss out on so much footwork lmfao. the balance and flexibility of women make this so much more compelling too. and the endurance is OUTSTANDING

i really cant get over the complexity of movement though. i’ve never seen men do any of this kind of work. they should just not be playing sports full stop tbh

 so im drawing levi right, and i was giving him fish features bc duh. but then i was like wait..i don’t know anything about fish 😦 you cant accurately draw him with fish features if you don't know how Nevi wtf are you doing!! so i got to researching about different fish and trying to find one that would suit him bc we cant do my man Levi dirty. The first thing i found was this lil mf

cool right☝🏽if you dont know this is a Royal Gramma/Gramma Loreto ☝🏽🤓 and i was like this suits Levi so well, look at the colors 🙀 but wait, whats this other fish image that popped up next to it??  its royal grammas cousin the Royal Dottyback/pseudochromis paccagnelae 🤓 (they aren’t actually cousins or maybe they are ion know i aint a fish 🤷🏽)

they look a bit similar, but the difference that stood out to me the most was that the dottyback has BLUE eyes instead, which is perfect because Levis design has blue🙏🏽. I decided to do more research on these fish specifically because i think they make a lot of sense for levi personally and i found this handy dandy lil comparison chart 🤗

lmfao i literally already do that, you jackanapes. i'm a freelance transcriptionist and I have been for YEARS!!!!! i'm GOOD at it, too! having a remote job doesn't mean there's any work in the queue, and it certainly doesn't mean they're PAYING me to do it. a few years ago (like 2016-2018) it was actually possible for me to work from home and earn, like, almost minimum wage. but at least it was consistent. Like, if you knew when the peak times to avoid were, you could always snag work from the queue. I earned anywhere between $8-15 an hour doing that for a few years, and I still never broke more than about $2,000 per year.

the thing about this one is, it's like, the PERFECT setup, in theory. i can come and go as I please, no minimum or maximum amount of work, my insanely fast typing skills ensured I could actually pick files worth my time (my average is 130wpm but I've hit 200. if you even care). being able to stop in the middle of a file and walk away when I was having symptoms, or even just when it was pissing me off, is IDEAL. as long it's done correctly and submitted on time, it doesn't matter what your workflow looks like. i LOVE!!!!! this. yes, please, for the love of god leave me alone and let me do my thing. i work SO much better this way.

as of the last few years, companies like Rev.com have done nothing in the intervening time but increasingly replace their skilled workers (me) with AI auto-captions and having us proofread those instead, all while jacking up their prices for consumers and paying us less and less per file. plus, there's more competition than ever since the pandemic hit, and everyone and their brother think they can just pick up a job like transcription as a side gig or whatever. anyway, since they started becoming worse, I've barely managed to keep up $10 an hour, and there's barely any work in the queue. I check constantly. I'm lucky if i can make a few dollars per week doing that now.

but hey, I actually never gave up. you know what else is a "work remotely online" job? running your own art business. which i also do. I may be conventionally unemployed, but I DO still have multiple jobs! and you people see that and go, "no, that doesn't count. what if you just had MORE jobs? surely this would fix all of your problems?" wow, genius, fucking sensational, THAT WOULD HAVE NEVER OCCURRED TO ME WITHOUT YOUR SAGE WISDOM, ANON. WOW.

YES, I also do market research panels and all that garbage. YES, i have done data entry. I did sigtrack for a while, but I wasn't very good at it, reading people's handwriting is a lot harder for me than parsing speech. I even did Amazon Mechanical Turk back in the day, holy shit, do not do that, 0/10. Any of those shit articles from the penny hoarder youre about to send me? I've done it, and possibly still do from time to time!

Anyway, if that's still not good enough for you, presumably you know a company that hires remotely that you can refer me to? Why don't you hire me yourself, if you're so concerned?
