Something that bugs me about the events of 1483, which I've been able to frame properly till now, is the recurring narrative of "Richard III attacked the Woodvilles and they would have done the same to him, the only reason they didn't is because he got there first". This is often tied into the idea that they were rivals/enemies before Edward IV's death and very much part of the underlying justification for Richard's actions that's pedalled out across his "fandom": if they would have done the same to him, he's hardly at fault for "protecting" himself.

Personally, I really, really don't think that narrative holds up, and i find i5 quite irritating, tbh. It 1) implies that Richard iii and the Woodvilles were on an equal power standing and only a cutthroat power struggle could decide who emerged on top, which is fundamentally untrue. The Woodvilles (or at least some of them) *were* given lots of power and influence, did hold quite a bit of territory, and did play a major role in bringing up the crown prince who was now the king, but they were not as powerful as Richard III and that is a fact. Richard was given unprecedented power, and the idea that he was at all threatened by the Woodvilles' "dominance" of the court and country is laughable. Especially since, frankly, the opposite is far more accurate considering HIS authority in the North, and his status as a Plantagenet.

2) This sort of thinking also ends yp automatically assuming that the Woodvilles wanted such a thing? That they viewed this as a sort of vicious power struggle between them and Richard III where only one of them could win? Which IS the narrative that Richard III himself preached (im waiting for the day when Ricardian Propoganda as a term is used word as much Tudor Propaganda) but everything we know points to the opposite? Elizabeth Woodville agreed to limit her son's personal escort, presumably as a show of goodwill. Anthony Woodville and Richard Gray dined with Richard III and were taken by complete surprise when they were arrested the next day. As per the Croyland Chronicle, Elizabeth Woodville tried to act "benevolently" to preserve cooperation during the council. And not to mention, the moment she heard of her brother and her sons arrests, Elizabeth rushed into sanctuary - hardly the actions of a woman who was expecting conflict and danger from Richard III. The Woodvilles, as far as I can tell, were pretty councilatory. it's possible that they wanted to maintain/perhaps increase their power now that a Woodville son was on the throne, but that is completely natural/normal and has literally happened with the ascension of virtually every monarch in history. nothing points to the Woodvilles being excessive or aggressive - quite the opposite. And nothing points to Richard acting as a reaction to a Woodville threat - again, quite the opposite. We don't know what was going on in his mind during that time, but all evidence points to him being the instigator of the conflict and the Woodvilles (and eventually everyone else) being very surprised and taken aback by it.

And while personal relationships are obviously difficult to truly know, all evidence points to the Woodvilles and Richard III cooperating fairly well with each other during Edward IV's life. There were no recorded disagreements, and there are a few instances of the Woodvilles supporting/trusting Richard: I believe Anthony wanted him to settle a dispute only a few months before Edward's demise.

Hi! I think there's not much else I can add to your observations (which I agree with). When it comes to the threat that the Woodvilles posed, at most, we could say Thomas Grey was arrogant to say they were big enough to rule without the Duke of Gloucester, which hardly constitutes a real declaration of war considering the conciliatory attitudes of the most senior members of the family, Queen Elizabeth and Earl Rivers (Anthony Woodville). The statement itself can be questioned since Mancini was the one who claimed there was a feud between the Woodvilles and Gloucester prior to 1483 when their collaboration predeceasing Edward IV's death hardly attests to that claim. That is not to say we should discredit Mancini's account altogether, only that Mancini might have been trying to make sense of Richard's usurpation through whichever report or gossip that he came across at that time.

In serious need of help.

I need to move out 3/1/22, but try as I have I haven’t been able to save up for the move. I don’t know where I’m going yet, because I don’t know my move-in budget. I have bad credit so I can’t rent an apartment, and I have pets so I have to find somewhere that will allow them. So the search has been really hard. However, I need money to be able to move out. I can’t get a loan because of my bad credit, and I struggle with doing anything because of clinical depression, ADHD, and others. What I truly wish I had was someone to hold my hand and guide me through this, but I have to do it on my own and it’s so overwhelming. It would help so much to know I’m ready financially for this. Since I don’t know where I’m moving, I’m making estimates on what I’ll need. With first month and deposit/last month’s rent depending, I think I’ll need $1,400. 

I really have to move out ASAP or I face living in my car or a hotel for as long as my funds last. 

I know it’s a tough time for everyone, but if anyone can help me I’d be forever grateful. Even if I don’t get the full amount, just something would help and ease my stress and anxiety.

My only other option at this point is to give away my pets, and I really, really can’t face doing that. Certified or not, they’re my emotional support.

To add to this, I need to fill my ADHD med and I’m still waiting for my financial aid to come through for it as my insurance will only cover it if I try going back on one that was really, really bad for me and that I refuse to take again. Until I get the financial aid, which I expect to, it costs $300.

I know I’m asking a lot, but I’m really desperate. I’m sorry for doing this, it’s really hard for me.
