And so, this journey has come to a close
I’ve documented all my poor translations and described each games’ stories and dialogues to the best of my abilities. They’re fairly simple, so they weren’t hard to get the gist of, but I am happy to have done this project. Here’s a quick navigation for those who want to find information on each game quickly:
Wagyan (Arcade)
Wagyan Land (Famicom)
Wagyan Land 2 (Famicom)
Super Wagyan Land (Super Famicom)
Wagyan Land 3 (Famicom)
Super Wagyan Land 2 (Super Famicom)
Wagyan Paradise (Super Famicom)
Hirameki Action: Chibikko Wagyan no Ōkina Bōken aka Wagyan Adventure (Nintendo DS)
To celebrate this occassion, here’s some art I’ve made. You can find my twitter here too for more art.

So I'm thinking about Wagyan a lot
REBLOG THIS WITH YOUR F/O and I’ll assign them a piñata from Viva Piñata! (putting my autism to good use)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basically: you reblog this and I’ll give them a piñata for the garden and explain why! Because I am. Thinking so hard about this game.

The 1994 Super Nintendo game Wagyan Paradise features an enemy that would later feature in the Klonoa series as Spiker/Sasarun. At one point, the player character even dons a diving suit similar to the Deep-One seen in Klonoa 2: Dream Champ Tournament and Klonoa Heroes. Wagyan Paradise shares much of the same development staff as Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, which would be released about 4 years later.

That one time Bamco revived Wagyan Land... on the DS???
Tumblr media
Yes, this is "Hirameki Action - Chibikko Wagyan no Daiki na Bouken", a 2009 revival of the series, with the addition of touch screen minigames!!!! (Everyone's favorite...). It looks fun, however I haven't played it myself, so take my opinion with a grain of double supreme salt.

In 2012, Namco had a collection of Webcomics made based on a bunch of their old franchises like Dig-Dug, Katamari, and Sky Kid. Surprisingly enough, Wagyan Land was also part of that collection. The website that hosted the webcomics has long since shut down, and I couldn’t find anywhere the had the comics posted other than this tumblr that had archives of all Shiftylook comics.
Wagyan Land had 14 webcomics made in total, here are the last six of them.

Jerboa-dinosaur – stars and snails
Tumblr media
Pixel art for today based on videogame Super Wagyan Land 2 for game console Super Nintendo. As usual Super Nintendo – it is most coolest 16 bit graphics. About a question of colors. Lots of colors. And once again a good and kind videogame. Also, for Super Nintendo there are lots of them. For Sega games are so serious. And at the Super Nintendo there are lots of good and kind little games. About one more little animal. Greenish colored little animal, little stars and snail. I think that it is something like Super Mario or about little dinosaur there is one game.
And this is my drawing about the same theme. Green jerboa dinosaur is rather rare little animal in  a forest. And so, he wakes up. And go to snails. He is a friend with snails. Snails – they are quite opposite- there are lots of them in a forest. It is easy to say that it is their forest. And in the air and not high, are in the air little delicious stars. Jerboa dinosaur likes to eat them. They are taste like cookie. But it is not possible to eat some little stars – they are alive.  And they flying high from you.
Snails are crawling somewhere all the time. Thy are never stay still at one place. And if you are going to them as a guest, than you need to know that they are already crawl to another place. And you need to find them. Snails are telling interesting stories. And they are crawling somewhere.
And jerboa has a big deal for today. He is going as a guest to one of these little stars. Which invites him as a guest yesterday. And tomorrow morning jerboa is going to friend. But he forget to ask where little star lives. And it is good to find this place all over the forest.

Have you ever heard of Alex Kidd? On a sidenote, as a Dragon Ball fan, I could always see the Toriyama influence in the series (like the Janken) and was not all surprised to hear it confirmed the first game was originally a licensed Dragon Ball game.
I played a fair bit of the first Alex Kidd, I enjoy it but the one hit death and very small range of your default attack makes it tough to come back to.
I'm sure you already know of Journey to the West and all the trivia related to it and it's connections with Dragonball and Video Games. There's dozens of adaptations.
Not sure what's with the Rock Paper Scissors thing but I feel like it popped up in several cutesy platformers I've played, inlucing Marvel Land and Keroppi no Daibouken 2, probably a few others i'm forgetting, I want to say Wagyan Land.

Completion No. 37 of 2022 Wagyan Land - Namco -This was....an interesting one for sure. The translation makes the final fight so hard, its not even funny. Like an hour of restarts without enough points.

Note
Namco has seemed to have always had the name “Wagan” in mind for Wagyan Land.
Tumblr media
Here is a screenshot from Wagyan Land 3 showing the name romanized as “WAGANLAND”.
So out of curiosity, I did a little research on Wagan myself but it seems that its name is actually Wagyan. Interestingly has 7 games in the franchise, with the last one being Japanese exclusive on the DS in the last days of January, almost 14 years old right now.
I must say I know next to nothing of the Japanese language so I was not quite sure whether to say Wagan or Wagyan! I know fan-translated stuff uses Wagyan, but I decided to go with Wagan since it is what was written on the machine.
Tumblr media
"Wagan" is also used in the context of Pac-Man 99, but all this being said, I know Nacmo's official localizations can be untrustworthy, like with the Miru/Mil situation where they sort of go back and forth.
There really is a surprising amount of games in this franchise! I have now played most of Wagan Land 2, and it is an improvement from the first in the sense that it has more minigame variety, so less chance of getting Word Chain! It still has Word Chain though... I wonder if it is inherently more possible in Japanese, but the memory game can be nearly as unfair, so I am not confident about that.
